"The evidence presented in Treasury's report challenges the view that worker empowerment holds back economic prosperity," a department economist wrote.
A report released Monday by the U.S. Treasury Department argues that labor unions are critical to combating income inequality, which has risen dramatically in recent decades as union membership has declined and real wages have largely stagnated.
The report estimates that unions boost the wages of their members by between 10% and 15%, an impact that spreads to the broader economy as nonunion workplaces compete for employees.
"Unions also improve fringe benefits and workplace procedures such as retirement plans, workplace grievance policies, and predictable scheduling," the report notes. "These workplace improvements contribute substantially to middle-class financial stability and worker well-being. For example, one study has estimated that the average worker values their ability to avoid short-notice schedule changes at up to 20% of their wages."
In a summary of the report's findings, Treasury Department economist Laura Feiveson wrote that "increased unionization has the potential to contribute to the reversal of the stark increase in inequality seen over the last half-century."
"All in all, the evidence presented in Treasury's report challenges the view that worker empowerment holds back economic prosperity," wrote Feiveson. "In addition to their effect on the economy through more equality, unions can have a positive effect on productivity through employee engagement and union voice effects, providing a roadmap for the type of union campaigns that could lead to additional growth."
Tumblr media
The Treasury Department report was released less than a week after UPS Teamsters ratified a five-year contract that includes substantial wage increases, a deal secured after the union threatened a nationwide strike.
The United Auto Workers (UAW) union is also looking to win a major pay increase for General Motors, Ford, and Stellantis employees. Last week, 97% of UAW members who participated in the vote opted to authorize a strike if contract talks with the three automakers fail.
Meanwhile, Hollywood writers and actors are still on strike, and others across the country—including nurses, hotel workers, and city employees—have walked off the job in recent weeks to demand better pay, benefits, and conditions.
The wave of strikes followed significant labor victories in 2022, a year in which Starbucks employees organized hundreds of locations across the U.S.—victories that contributed to an increase in the total number of U.S. workers in unions last year.
The union membership rate, however, fell from 10.3% in 2021 to a record-low 10.1% in 2022 as nonunion jobs grew at a faster rate than union jobs.
In a Monday speech outlining her department's findings, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that unions are "critically important to workers' well-being."
"Unionization also has spillover effects," Yellen added. "Competition means workers at nonunionized firms may see increased wages too. Heightened workplace safety norms can pull up whole industries. Benefits also spill over to workers' families and communities."

Workers unionizing at Peet’s Coffee’s Temescal, Piedmont and Telegraph & Dwight stores acquired formal legal recognition last Wednesday, according to Peet’s labor union’s Instagram post. The union hopes to improve working conditions, promote worker autonomy and increase wages and benefits, said Liz Rico, a barista at the Telegraph & Dwight location. “While it took a lot to get here, this is not the end,” reads Peet’s Labor Union’s Instagram post. “This is only the beginning! Now to win the contract we deserve.” After filing initial petitions for union elections this June, Peet’s Labor Union voted to become officially represented by the Industrial Workers of the World, or IWW, Rico explained. According to Peet’s Labor Union’s website, the union selected the IWW to represent it due to its “rich history of championing the rights of workers and fighting for their empowerment.” By joining this network, the union can better connect baristas and warehouse and roastery workers from across the industry, the website reads.

Gender diversity in manufacturing
The manufacturing sector in India has embraced diversity, equity, and inclusion. However, DEI requires to be deeper in the sector than just some standard practices.
Sharing his perspectives on furthering DEI in the space, Ashok Ramachandran, CEO and President, Schindler India, talks to Avtar Insights, about targeted interventions in gender diversity, and on embedding culture as a leader to support it.
You are a leader who puts people at the center of operations. Tell us some principles you follow when building a culture that supports them.
Some ways to build a culture are:
Giving them the freedom to operate and personalize our leadership style based on individual needs.
Understanding the importance of having good managers, I started by propagating my ideology with the direct reportees, and with time it has moved down the organization and similar ideologies are being spread by my reportees.
Not always reviewing numbers but also focusing on their well-being, the secret sauce is to also focus on the ‘how’ and not just the ‘what’
Be soft on the person but tough on the issues.
As a signatory of Women Empowerment Principles (WEPS), you have prioritized gender diversity. Share the results you have witnessed due to this emphasis with us.
There has been an increased awareness among People Managers and teams down the line due to multiple sensitization platforms. These comprise bottom-Up Leadership Stories, Branding initiatives – Women in Leadership, Female Leadership Program for Young Women, Quarterly Skill building sessions for all women, POSH workshops, etc.
We have witnessed a rise in Gender Diversity from 2% in 2018 to 4% in 2022 – marginal growth with increased efforts on hiring. Retention remains our constant challenge.
When we started in 2019, we experimented with hiring women across various field roles for the first time. 2019 was the year of many firsts. We continued to build on that till 2022.
Over the last four years, we now have a fair view of which roles and locations are favorable for our women employees and we plan to leverage the insights from the same.
Share with us the impact of the ‘Be an Ally’ program adopted at Schindler for people managers?
In 2020, Be an Ally was our first step towards sensitizing our People Managers on DEI. In this, we spoke about several diversities in the workplace, including Female & LGBTQI+ Inclusion. In 2021, we launched an extension of the same program and deep-dived into two major spectrums of diversity at Schindler– mainly Female & LGBTQI inclusion. In 2022, we launched the ‘Inclusive Leadership’ program, which sensitized the people managers on the exact behaviors that they need to display with the diversities in their teams & how they can be inclusive leaders
As a result of these continued efforts, we had our first transgender hire, who was integrated with the organization. Also, we can now clearly see female diversity being nurtured and built in many of our branches.
How is India different in the realm of DEI, according to you?
There are a few differences that are unique to India:
Cultural diversities
Advent of GenZs & dominance of Millennials in the Workforce
50% women population
Growing opportunities to work abroad/ global organizations
Deep-rooted beliefs and biases towards females, stereotypes, etc.
Tell us how your focus areas in diversity and inclusion have changed over the years.
When we started our I&D journey in 2019, we focussed on the attraction of talent from the non-Elevator industry & hired Females in various roles
Over the last four years, our focus has been on creating awareness and sensitization across all diversities. In 2023, we are now moving towards three sharp focus areas – increasing female diversity, inclusion awareness & building inclusive leaders
Going forward, we will focus on other spectrums like PWD and LGBTQI and take initiatives accordingly.
The manufacturing industry in India is opening up to the advantages of diversity and inclusion. What changes do you foresee resulting from this transformation? And is there a potential you feel is still unlocked for the industry in this space?
The manufacturing industry has seen great success in building & skilling female talent through their flagship DET/ GET Train & Hire programs that have resulted in higher ROIs. This is an extremely positive shift from the DEI aspect.
However, the industry is also currently facing immense challenges in terms of acceptance from families, customers, managers, and team members. This has also impacted the retention of female talent in the industry. Most female exits from Schindler are either not joining anywhere or joining the Non-Elevator/ Service industries.
The increase of women in STEM is very encouraging and will be a boost to the availability of women’s talent pool for the manufacturing sector.
There is immense potential yet to be unlocked in terms of the shift in the mindsets of leaders, openness to experiment and fail, job readiness, train, and hire. These are some of the untapped opportunities that may help female talent grow in the manufacturing space in India.

Why Being a Leader Is Important
In the business world, leadership is a frequently discussed subject. It's critical to comprehend why it matters and how it benefits organizations and employees.
When leaders are effective, they can foster a positive work environment that encourages innovation. This will ultimately spur innovation. An essential component of leadership is motivation. Team members won't be able to accomplish their goals and objectives without it.
Effective leaders inspire team perseverance and resilience by fostering a positive environment. They also engender a sense of shared vision and motivate their teams to collaborate to achieve a common objective.
Managers can promote intrinsic motivation by praising and recognizing staff members for their accomplishments. These actions can boost an employee's pride and self-confidence, which improves performance.
On the other hand, by establishing a standard that people must meet to receive rewards or stay out of trouble, leaders can also assist their teams in developing extrinsic motivation. For instance, a bonus might be given to someone if they surpass their sales quota. However, they risk being fired if they miss it by a significant margin. Both the leadership and the workforce may find this to be a frustrating situation.
One of the fundamental principles of leadership is vision. Your vision and direction influence your decisions, motivating your team to put in extra effort and change the world.
Strong visions give us the willpower to endure adversity. We view minor setbacks as manageable challenges from which we can overcome, grow, and move on. Without a clear vision, we can feel overwhelmed and give up on our mission.
An effective leadership vision can sharpen attention on the leader and his objective. Employees start to work harder when a leader can articulate his vision clearly and earn their trust.
The best visions provide a concise and clear response to the question, "Why?" They give leaders' work a sense of direction, significance, and purpose, enabling them to relate to and recruit employees for the business. This promotes a successful and contented culture.
People who feel empowered have more control over their lives on various social levels. It also enables people and groups to learn more and speak up for themselves in various circumstances.
Leadership involves using empowerment to its fullest potential. It may increase employee engagement, decrease attrition, and greater job satisfaction.
Companies can use it to aid in quick adaptation and evolution. According to research, employees with autonomy are more likely to embrace change and act as its drivers, which can lead to creative new business developments.
Organizations must give managers the required resources and assistance to empower them fully. This can involve giving managers more authority, giving them leadership training, and involving them in strategic discussions about the company's future.
Building trust between managers and employees requires leadership accountability. Additionally, it fosters the sense of justice required for a motivated workforce.
Additionally, it is crucial to learn from errors. A leader won't be able to avoid a situation in the future if they cannot explain why something didn't work out.
Every leader's top priority should be accountability because it is an essential component of the organizational process. Without it, the organization cannot accomplish its objectives or advance correctly.
The best leaders are responsible for their performance and actions; they accept accountability for their choices and the results of those choices. Even if it means putting their own needs and interests on hold, they won't hesitate to ask for assistance when they do.

BENEFITS OF CORPORATE VOLUNTEERING:
Corporate volunteering is a way for businesses to contribute to the community. Companies often encourage their employees to volunteer by allowing paid time off which they use to volunteer at either a charity of their choice or one nominated by the employer.
Skilled support for charities:
More engaged employees:
Employee skill and personal development:
Employee satisfaction
Recruitment and retention
Here’s a link for contacting Mapru foundation for corporate volunteering!
Mapru foundation corporate volunteering
What is a difference between employee volunteering and corporate volunteering
Or
Are they the same?
All through researching and making this draft, I too had the same doubt.
Well, it’s pretty simple to understand as:
An Employee Volunteer Programs is a planned, managed effort that seeks to motivate and enable employees to effectively serve community needs through the leadership of the employer.
Corporate volunteering is any action by an employer to encourage and support the volunteer involvement of their employees in the community, whether during work hours or in employees’ own time.
Could said as the different sides of the same coin its is.
In all, I would like to say, be it corporate social responsibility or corporate volunteering Mapru foundation is the ideal partner for any firm looking out for their benefits.

Willson Cross, CEO & Co-Founder of Borderless AI – Interview Series
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/willson-cross-ceo-co-founder-of-borderless-ai-interview-series/
Willson Cross, CEO & Co-Founder of Borderless AI – Interview Series
Willson Cross is the CEO and Co-Founder of Borderless AI, an enterprise at the forefront of pioneering the application of artificial intelligence in global human resources.
Under his leadership, Borderless AI is developing as the world’s first company to introduce a dedicated AI agent for Global HR. This proprietary AI agent, named Alberni, employs conversational AI to manage a wide range of tasks such as generating international employment agreements, automating global expense reimbursements, and tracking time requests among other HR functions.
Prior to your work at Borderless AI, you dropped out of New York University to start a company called GoFetch. Could you discuss these early days of launching your first company, and how you eventually exited?
After my third year at New York University, I dropped out to start a passion project that quickly turned into a profession — GoFetch. The company was born due to the lack of technological advancements within the pet industry, similar to Borderless AI and HR. For example, there was an Airbnb or Uber for pretty much everything at the time, except for pets. GoFetch was like an Uber for dogs and, later on, became much more. Think of it as an online marketplace for people to buy and sell pet care services, including pet sitting, dog boarding, and dog walking. We raised $3.5M+ and grew the team to 45 employees before selling the business in 2018.
What were some of your key takeaways from this entrepreneurial experience?
I learned that picking the right market is one of the most critical jobs you can have as a CEO and founder and that you must be willing to take big bets.
Could you share the genesis story behind your newest startup Borderless AI?
I knew the HR space was in need of something innovative and game-changing, especially amid the backdrop of a global pandemic when location didn’t matter for employers or employees. But it couldn’t be something that, in five years, wouldn’t make a difference for these organizations. After researching, I found that there is approximately $1 billion of added revenue annually in the Employer of Record (EOR) industry. Yet, even with the strong customer demand in this category, the customer journey has not been touched by AI. Given the frustrations my co-founder, Sean Aggarwal, and I have had in building international teams over our careers, we wanted to change that with the launch of Borderless AI.
What are the problems with onboarding, managing, and paying international team members that Borderless AI is solving?
Borderless AI is enabling growth in businesses — whether it’s helping speed up processes that previously took days or even months or solving the mundane and semi-automated tasks that go into onboarding and paying international employees. As more companies adopt AI technology and realize the potential of their organization through global expansion that wasn’t possible before, there will be more interest in AI agents, resulting in increased investment in the space and allowing for continued growth and innovation. We’re bringing economic empowerment to the world by removing geographic barriers and democratizing access to the best job opportunities for talented people around the globe with our AI agent, Alberni.
How does Alberni, your AI agent, revolutionize the way HR tasks are traditionally managed?
Removing stressors such as compliance or tax laws of the past, AI is revolutionizing the way we do work —  an important need for the distributed global workforce and employers looking to scale quickly. It does so using GenAI to streamline the entire background check experience for businesses and international employees alike. More specifically, Borderless AI can solve international employment law challenges while accelerating geographic expansion and ensuring compliance in hiring processes.  For example, Alberni can solve complex problems and automate processes in any country worldwide within minutes (vs. the normal 7-10 business day timeframe), such as generating employment agreements in minutes, automating employee onboarding tasks, time-off requests, and cross-border payroll efficiency.
In automating the global HR stack, how does Borderless AI ensure that the technology remains accurate and free from errors, such as “hallucinations” often associated with AI?
We’ve partnered with Cohere to ensure the technology remains accurate. We’ve been able to leverage the power of RAG by augmenting Cohere’s large language models with Borderless AI’s proprietary data, such as HR knowledge and employment law, to perform specific tasks and provide knowledge to customers quickly, efficiently and compliantly.
Borderless AI leverages conversational AI to streamline complex HR tasks. Could you give us a practical example of how Alberni simplifies a traditionally time-consuming HR process?
We’re using AI to automate many aspects, such as onboarding international employees, automating the creation of their agreements and accelerating payment times and expense reimbursements. Generative AI can reduce tasks that now take days to minutes. For example, hiring an employee in Sweden typically requires finding a local lawyer to create an employment agreement, which takes five to ten business days and costs up to $8,000.
The rise of vertical-specific AI solutions is becoming more prevalent. How does Borderless AI’s approach to HR compare to similar innovations in other industries like legal and customer service?
Taking a verticalized AI approach, Borderless is doing for the HR industry what Harvey is doing in the legal space and Sierra is doing in the customer service realm — we’re helping draw attention to the critical need for AI agents across verticals.  With an increased demand in technologies that help companies navigate complex issues that arise from hiring international team members, such as employment agreements and employee tax forms, Borderless AI’s technology is a key differentiator in the EOR market, accelerating the future of work and allowing companies to understand complex queries that previously took days or weeks to navigate.
Cost management and transparency are crucial for businesses. How does Borderless AI’s model provide a cost-effective solution for international hiring?
Borderless AI’s model helps save money and time in the long run. For example, HR professionals generally need to go to a law firm or their legal department and wait days, in turn spending thousands of dollars in budget on getting an employment agreement for an employee in a new country. Instead, by leveraging conversational AI, the same HR professional can now generate a compliant employment agreement within minutes by interfacing with an AI agent. Instead of waiting 5-10 days and spending upwards of $10,000 for an international labor lawyer to draft an employment agreement, Alberni will do so in minutes.
Additionally, our pricing is set at $579 per employee per month and is in line with market standards. We also give away many Alberni features for free.
Offering localized benefits is a significant aspect of Borderless AI’s service. How do you customize benefits packages for employees in different countries?
We offer international employees health benefits using a global health benefits provider. We have three tiers of offerings: Silver, Gold and Platinum. The Borderless team offers guidance for our customers in selecting the package based on their team’s unique needs. To ensure that our customers are able to offer a custom-fit package to their team, depending on the country, we also offer additional benefits through our partnerships with local benefits providers.
Thank you for the great interview, readers who wish to learn more should visit Borderless AI.

The Vital Role of Corporate Donations in Saving Children's Lives
Tumblr media
In a world where children face numerous challenges ranging from malnutrition and lack of access to healthcare to the impacts of natural disasters and conflicts, corporate donations to nonprofits and NGOs emerge as a beacon of hope. These contributions play a vital role in safeguarding the well-being and future of these children globally. We will talk about the importance of corporate donations in saving children's lives, highlighting their impact on critical areas such as healthcare, cancer and heart disease in children, nutrition, emergency response, advocacy, and sustainable development.
One of the most prevalent issues affecting children worldwide is malnutrition, which contributes to a significant number of deaths and long-term health problems. Another condition is cogneital heart defects, one of the leading birth defects. The NGO working for congenital heart disease need corporate donations to support the treatment of children who cannot afford the same.  Corporate donations support nutrition programs that provide essential food, supplements, and education to prevent and treat malnutrition in children. By addressing the causes of hunger and poor nutrition, corporations play a crucial role in ensuring that children have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.
In addition to this, corporate donations empower nonprofit organizations to advocate for policy changes and investments that benefit children's health and welfare.  NGOs can advocate for legislative reforms, increased funding for child-focused programs, and the adoption of best practices in areas such as education, healthcare, and child protection. Through strategic efforts and corporations, nonprofits can create changes that improve the lives of children and families in the long term.
Furthermore, corporate donations to non-profits play a crucial role in building sustainable solutions to the root causes of child poverty, inequality, and vulnerability. By investing in community development projects, education initiatives, and economic empowerment programs, corporations contribute to creating opportunities for children to break the cycle of poverty and build brighter futures.
Moreover, corporate donations have the potential to bring about a broader societal change by promoting corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethical business practices. When corporations prioritize philanthropy and community engagement, they set a positive example for their peers and stakeholders, encouraging others to follow. By aligning business goals with social impact objectives, corporations can create shared value for both the shareholders and society at large. Through initiatives such as employee volunteer programs, cause-related marketing campaigns, and sustainable business practices, corporations can foster a culture of giving back and contribute to building more equitable and inclusive societies where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
Many corporations have specialized knowledge and resources that can be leveraged to develop and implement innovative solutions to pressing challenges. Whether it's using technology for telemedicine initiatives in remote areas, providing logistical support for humanitarian aid delivery, or sharing best practices management, corporate partners bring valuable skills and capabilities to the table. By fostering collaboration between the private sector and nonprofit organizations, corporate donations enable the co-creation of solutions that are scalable, sustainable, and tailored to the unique needs of children and communities.
Despite the significant impact of corporate donations, challenges remain in ensuring that resources are effectively deployed to address the most pressing needs of children around the world. It is essential for corporations to engage in strategic partnerships with reputable nonprofit organizations and NGOs that have the expertise and capacity to deliver results.
In conclusion, corporate donations are indispensable in saving children's lives and improving their well-being. By investing in healthcare, nutrition, emergency response, advocacy, and sustainable development, corporations play a vital role in addressing the complex challenges facing children globally. Corporates can invest in NGOs working for education, environment sustainability or in organizations working on the ground such as an NGO working for congenital heart disease to bring impact on the ground. Through strategic partnerships and targeted investments, corporations can make a huge difference in the lives of millions of children, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential. Corporate Donation remains a powerful force for positive change, offering hope and opportunity to the most vulnerable among us.

This article delves into the importance of payroll software in improving the overall efficiency of an organization.
1. Automation of Processes:
Payroll Processing software automates repetitive tasks such as calculating employee wages, taxes, and deductions.
