i want to talk about the brilliant use of mirrors in my policeman. there were a lot of scenes which were told through mirrors, rather than the actual people and it encapsulates so many aspects of the movie perfectly. it represents how tom is a culmination of both marion and patrick's projections of this ideal person, this ideal romance, this ideal love. because tom after all is his own person going through his own very real identity exploration while at the same time having to live up to two different people's expectations who he cares about. the mirrors also reflect the concept of identity and how your reflection sometimes ends up showing you things you wouldn't have been aware of otherwise -- scars, flaws and revelations alike. it reflects upon you, the individual, real you and maybe, a little bit, the true you and the film uses the mirrors at very pivotal parts. most of the intimate scenes between tom and patrick are shown through mirrors, the one time both of them could be themselves, hidden behind walls and reflections, where no one could see them, where no one could disrupt them, where it was just them being two people in love. another pivotal scene is where marion finds out about the venice trip and confronts tom about patrick and tom lies to her just to calm her down and that scene is important because that's when the switch inside marion flips off, that's when she decides that she would go to any lengths to keep tom to herself, that's when she makes the decision of sending the anonymous letter that would expose patrick, that is her breaking point. that's why the film has incredible cinematography because ultimately the key character, tom, is a product of both marion and patrick's ideal fantasies and we get to see and get to know tom through these people's lenses. and so, tom at the end of the day is basically a mirror image, a reflection of marion and tom's deepest desires. he is but a mirror reflecting other people's narratives.

internet critics tm getting so mad about black mirror doing supernatural themes in their episodes like girl. any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic! also maybe you should consider that the core conceit of black mirror is really “our contemporary unease with the modern world” and not necessarily ‘instagram bad’
