I stated my day posting about the need for us to do better. By now many of you have seen the video of this elder being stared down by the poster child for the future of white supremacy. I will not post the encounter on my feed, but it’s all over Twitter and major news outlets. It’s also available on the original posters feed. See below. I’m not going to lie. I felt this one. This moment weighs heavy on my heart. The racism... the ignorance... of the young people in the other video. The disrespect to this elder... to #NativeAmericans... to our ancestors. The words of this elder are simple, earnest, heartfelt, and painful. They echo the pain of generations. “We did not have walls.” “We took care of our elder and our children.” Please take 56 seconds. admin here, this post is triggering af, especially if you are #nativeamerican. im mixed with NA and my family had a traditional naming ceremony years ago, my NA name is blossoming butterfly. i am a member of the #montaukett tribe in long island & the #cherokee tribe in n carolina. so yes this image made me emotional because i cant stand to see my ancestors/elders disrespected. this happened today at an #IndigenousPeoplesMarch. these disrespectful little children are students at #CovingtonCatholic in KY and they took it upon themselves to put on #MAGA hats, form a mob and harass this native american protestor who was chanting "hear me roar", which coincidentally is a song about peace. this little shit ass kid thought he could intimidate him and make him stop but he stood his ground. i wanna hold him so tight to not only thank him, but to show him my support. his name is nathan phillips and he is a vietnam war vet as well and look at how he's treated! after the unseasoned mob left him alone, he cried, not understanding why they would do this to him. and i did too. to the parents, faculty & staff of the #covingtoncatholiccolonels, you should be ashamed of yourselves. this video is a representation of each and every one of you and your community as a whole. racism, disrespect & hatred is taught, look at what you're passing down to your kids! look at what "your president" is allowing. this behavior & those musty red hats did not belong here! i'm so fucking heated but i'm gonna end with this. racial tensions in this country are boiling & soon we will all get burned. i can see it. a lot of us are scared of it. teach your kids some respect before they pull this stunt on someone who isn't as peaceful. an ig post is just the beginning. we can do more & we will! the school's phone number is 859-491-2247. you can also email the principal, bob rowe at browe@covcath.org this is not what america is about. this is stolen land. remember that! - @donnisbutterfly (thanks to @native_things) for this video https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs1KH9vF4eo/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=o1fa589wtizc

At the close of an Indigenous People’s Rally, a large group of Trump Supporters swarmed in, surrounding the party into a circle while chanting “Build a Wall”. A war veteran by the name of Nathan Phillips began to sing in order to calm everybody, as it was a medicine song that was supposed to calm the anger of the group. But unfortunately, the Trump group began mocking the elder singer by disrespecting his song and trying to chant/scream louder than him.

Why is it so hard to be respectful to other people? Why do people have to be so ignorant and hateful to anybody different from them? This is terrible, and I hope nobody was harmed during this event either. You can look on Instagram or online to find videos of this, and gain more information that I currently don’t have.

Nathan Phillips and Covington Catholic: An Indigenous woman’s view

Millions around the world were outraged by the scene of white teenagers wearing “Make America Great Again” caps harassing Native elder Nathan Phillips (Omaha Nation) as he was drumming and singing. It was captured on video after the Indigenous People’s March in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 19. Among other things, the racists circled around him and did “tomahawk chop” moves, mocked him and chanted “Build that wall!” referring to Donald Trump’s anti-migrant obsession that has furloughed federal workers and cut off government services for over a month.

Now, a racist backlash has set in, attempting to paint the Indigenous elder as the provocateur and the MAGA teens as victims of “fake news.” The charge is led by the white supremacist in chief, whose White House press secretary told reporters, “We’ve reached out and voiced our support” to the Covington students.

The kind of taunting and disrespect seen in the video is not new to Indigenous peoples. We are disrespected on a daily basis. In all too many areas, we have cans and other items hurled at us from the windows of passing vehicles. We are taunted by offensive costumes at Halloween, stereotypical roles in the media, and the use of sacred Native imagery and racist mascots for sports teams. We are taunted with erasure. This disrespect is a key part of settler colonialism and capitalism.
