News from Nanaimo, Vancouver Island, BC, Canada, 17 July
Wildfires in British Columbia have led to over 70 evacuation alerts or orders, primarily in the central Interior region.
Environment Canada has issued severe thunderstorm bulletins for the central Interior, warning of potential storms with strong winds,
2. A working group consisting of various Canadian agencies and officials has been formed to address the ongoing wildfires in BC.
The group's focus is on developing plans for deploying federal resources to support the province's firefighting efforts.
Two military reconnaissance teams have already been deployed, and their assessments will guide the deployment of further federal resources.
3. The Parksville Beach Festival in Canada attracts sand sculpting professionals from around the world and is known for its high quality of sand sculptures.
The festival allows visitors to watch the competitors carve their designs using various techniques and tools.
The event raises funds for local organizations and has donated over $1 million since 2000.
4. The North American Indigenous Games bring together Indigenous athletes from across the continent to celebrate their identity, culture, and future as Indigenous leaders.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau emphasized the importance of the games in furthering reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and supporting Indigenous youth in reclaiming their language, culture, and traditions.
The games aim to infuse Indigenous traditions throughout the event, with ceremonies such as smudging, elders providing guidance, and signage in Mi'kmaw, English, and French.
5. The Island Red Cedar team won the Silly Boats regatta in Nanaimo, British Columbia, with their fast and efficient boat.
They made no mistakes in their races and used a tiller for better steering. Other top performers included Coast Hotels with a bed-inspired design and Rotary Nanaimo/Lantzville with a bicycle-powered boat. Some entries had fun but didn't cross the finish line first. The event raised money for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre, which relies on fundraising for its programs.

Congratulations to @manalochelsea! Chelsea makes history as the first #Black & #Filipino-American representative of the #Philippines for Miss Universe! 👑
Following the theme of "Love For All," delegates shared their thoughts on the kind of love that makes a woman both inspiring & transformational. ❤️‍🔥
Chelsea Anne Manalo — born on October 14, 1999 under the astrological sign Libra — is 25 years old. ♎️
She is a proud #FilipinoAmerican Bulakenya who was raised in Meycauayan City, Bulacan. She was born in the Philippines to a Black American father & a Filipino mother, who separated in 2000. Following the divorce, her mother remarried a Filipino man. In 2004, she reconnected with her biological father in the United States, where she completed her grade school education. 🇵🇭🇺🇸
Before graduating from a tourism college, she expressed deep passion for music, dancing & modeling. Her journey into the world of beauty pageants began during high school. 🎵💃🏿💋
Chelsea is a professional model who has been gracing the cover of magazines, starring in commercials & print ads since 2013 at the age of 14. In 2021, she became a @benchbodyph endorser. 👠
Outside of high school, Chelsea's major debut into the pageant scene was through #MissWorldPhilippines 2017, she competed against 34 other candidates & made the Top 15. 💅🏿
On February 17, 2024, she was officially appointed Miss Universe Bulacan 2024. She also earned the title "Bulacan Barbie." Her advocacy reads: "Championing Indigenous Youth Education." Her advocacy aims to provide opportunities for #indigenousyouth to access quality education & unlock their full potential. 👯‍♀️
"As a woman of color, I've always faced challenges in my life. I was told that beauty has standards actually. But I have listened to always believe in my mother, to always believe in yourself, uphold the vows that you have in yourself. Because of that, I am already influencing a lot of women who are facing me right now as a transformational woman. I have here 52 other delegates with me who have helped me become the woman I am today." 👸🏾
As fellow #BlackFilipina #Saweetie would say: "IKDR!" Congratulations Chelsea! 🏴🇵🇭🇺🇸

As a dad I have experienced all different emotions when it comes to the connection of my children. No one hands you a ‘How To Parent’ instruction book. I walk with children (mostly indigenous) that live in ‘conditional love’ environments (not all, but some). What I do, isn’t a job. Far from it, (as the saying goes), “if you love doing something, you’ll never work again.” More importantly, I have the opportunity to pass on knowledge and strengthen their cultural identities. The image I took here, represents the unseen faces of youth, and all I’m doing is allowing them start being seen and heard. #youth #theunseenchild #children #letthembeheard #indigenousyouth https://www.instagram.com/p/CW2ZnMMhMHa/?utm_medium=tumblr

#iloveancestry Read Marjorie Parada’s inspiring message for our youth: 💫 “I went to school like this yesterday. I did it because I wanted to show how proud I am to be the person I am today. To show strength, to show what I stand for, that my people are still here, that I’m a fighter and I’m not only fighting for myself but for my people, for my friends, for all my loved ones. War paint to be exact. being invincible, being protected and I felt super confident about it. I also painted this on my face to educate other people around me. I go to school with a lot of non #NativeAmericans and not everyone knows what my culture is about. I was the only person at the school who did this and I had a lot of unusual looks and a lot of people that asked me what it was for or why it was on my face. I told them and told them how I felt about it. I just like to share that. Thank you.❤️” Marjorie is Navajo/Luiseño Native. 💫 #native #indigenousyouth #indigenouspride #nativepride #wearestillhere #proudnative #americanindian #nativeamericanpride #indiancountry #nativeyouth #nativeamericanwoman #n8v (at San Diego, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4F966SIck2/?igshid=4yikcczkndzs

Today, I watched the live feed of the 2018 Hope Forum in Ottawa, it was beautiful to see such bravery and honesty from indigenous youth as they speak their stories, share their perspectives and put out a call to action regarding integrating solid mental health supports for the healing and betterment of their communities. Deeply inspiring. #wemattercampaign #indigenousyouth #hopeforum2018 #strongertogether
