Hi Days! I just watched the Kabuki documentary with Ikuta Toma the other day and it was really interesting! I was surprised (and happy) to see Shun Oguri there too! I'm curious though if you've watched/followed other shows of any other Japanese celebrity? I also just finished watching "First Love" with Takeru Sato and Hikari Mitsushima the other day, it was a lovely series ❤️

Hello born!!! The Kabuki documentary was really, really interesting, right???? Finding out about how he was just coasting through being a trainee and realizing one day that everyone (Arashi ahhhh) was debuting except for him, it's like 💔 But he really found his own path!!! And I was also surprised to see Oguri Shun there! Just, like a surprise treat for all the fans??? I had no idea that they were such close friends.

*big sighs* I don't have the time to invest in regularly watching dramas. I do really, really want to watch First Love! Mostly because I want to support Netflix in carrying more Japanese dramas. Also who doesn't love Utada Hikaru.

I am certain that there's others that I don't have listed here, but basically I mostly watched dramas that starred Johnny's idols in the mid-2000s. I was a big Toda Erika, Aragaki Yui, and Shida Mirai fan. By 2008, I was moving onto Taiwanese and Korean fandoms, so like Takeru Satoh? I didn't watch anything with him in it even though he's a big name actor now, he was only just starting to get name recognition in 2008.

I have watched a few current films!! So actually I recently watched Mitsushima Hikari in Tang and Me starring Ninomiya Kazunari. She was so good. The plot of Tang was awful, but everyone's acting was SO HIGH TIER that the film was worth watching. I have high expectations for her in First Love. Also I watched The Fable film series on Netflix starring Okada Junichi, and yes. Yes. One of the best movies I've watched this year.

In terms of current dramas... I saw the first episode of Koi Nante, Honki De Yatte Dousuru No? (Who Needs True Love?) which stars Matsumura Hokuto and Hirose Alice. I really want to watch the rest of this because I think it will help me finish writing my fic "Genghis Khan." But. The Japanese is slightly too difficult for me to understand :( I heard from my friend that Hokuto's sex appeal is to-die-for in this drama. If I can't watch him in Koi Nante, I know that I'll at least get to hear him voice act in Shinkai's Suzume no Tojimari once it hits American theaters.

I also watched the first episode of Silent, which stars Meguro Ren and Kawaguchi Haruna. It comes highly recommended by my friends. It took a ton of brainpower for me to understand the first episode, though. My friends have way better Japanese comprehension than me. It really seems like Matsumura Hokuto and Meguro Ren are names to keep an eye on in Japanese entertainment these days.

My friends also really want me to watch Cherry Magic starring Akaso Eiji and Machida Keita. I feel like I've watched it already because I've seen so many clips of it here on Tumblr haha.

I'm sorry this was a huge response 😓 for a simple check-in. I guess I just summarized and relived several years of Japanese pop culture obsession in the past two hours of writing this out. Thoughts on anything I've written here? :D

·         Este jueves 3 de agosto a las 19:15 hrs. se estrena “Retrato de una mujer en llamas” de la directora francesa Celine Sciamma (Petit maman, Tomboy) un romance de época que retrata una pasión prohibida.

·         En la misma jornada, la nostalgia se toma la pantalla grande con el estreno de “The first Slam Dunk” del director Takehiko Inoue, que trae de regreso a un grupo de amigos que aman el baloncesto.

INSOMNIA Teatro Condell continúa con una nueva semana intensa de estrenos imperdibles. Esta vez es el turno de “Retrato de una mujer en llamas” de la directora Celine Sciamma y de “The First Slam Dunk”, escrita y dirigida por el creador del manga, Takehiko Inoue, ambas con estreno este jueves 3 de agosto. Además, el viernes 4 de agosto a las 18:00 hrs. será el estreno con cine foro de la película chilena: “La vaca que cantó una canción hacia el futuro” de la directora Francisca Alegría.

Celine Sciamma, directora de películas como Petit maman y Tomboy, vuelve a sorprender con una película sensible e intensa: “Retrato de una mujer en llamas”, un drama de época protagonizado por Noémie Merlant y Adèle Haenel, que ya ha sido premiada en el Festival de Cannes como mejor guión y nominada a mejor película de habla no inglesa en los Globos de Oro.

“Retrato de una mujer en llamas” se desarrolla en Francia en el año 1770. Marianne, una pintora, recibe un encargo de una condesa que consiste en realizar el retrato de bodas de su hija Héloïse, una joven que acaba de dejar el convento y que tiene serias dudas respecto a su próximo matrimonio. Marianne tiene que retratarla sin su conocimiento, por lo que se dedica a investigarla a diario. Este film se proyectará en agosto los días jueves 3 (19:15), sábado 5 (17:30), martes 8 (20:00), viernes 11 (19:30), domingo 13 (17:30) y martes 15 (15:00).

Claudio Pereira, programador de INSOMNIA, señaló que Céline Sciamma es: “sin duda una de las potentes directoras y guionistas europeas contemporáneas. Ha desarrollado una filmografía que combina perfectamente la potencia de sus relatos con una sensibilidad que no entrega concesiones. Desde abordar las pérdidas afectivas y el abandono como guionista de la animación “La vida del calabacín”, romances en lo cotidiano como guionista de “Les Olympiades”, hasta relatos luchas por igualdad y respeto a la diversidad en “Tomboy” hasta su premiada y aclamada Retrato de una mujer en llamas”.

“Un drama del siglo XVIII en clave contemporánea, donde trabaja nuevamente con la actriz francesa Noémie Merlant. Después de casi 3 años de espera podemos estrenar con mucho orgullo esta obra inteligente, pulcra y contundente en su discurso por la necesidad de tener libertad en un mundo donde la intolerancia reaparece”, finalizó.

El éxito de taquilla asiática “The First Slam Dunk” se estrena este jueves 3 de agosto a las 21:30 hrs. para reencontrar a los fanáticos que en 1993 se emocionaron con esta serie de un grupo de estudiantes de la secundaria Shohoku que busca ser el mejor equipo escolar de baloncesto de Japón. Con una animación 3D y las voces originales de la serie en español, este film tiene como protagonista a Ryota Miyagi.

“The First Slam Dunk” recibió el Premio Cinematográfico de la Academia Japonesa a Mejor Película Animada, además obtuvo el premio Satoshi Kon en el Festival Internacional de Cine Fantasía (FIFF) a la Excelencia en Animación.  

El “velocista” y base armador de Shohoku, Ryota Miyagi, siempre juega con inteligencia y a la velocidad del rayo, corriendo en círculos alrededor de sus oponentes mientras finge serenidad. Nacido y criado en Okinawa, Ryota tenía un hermano tres años mayor. Siguiendo los pasos de su hermano mayor, quien fue un famoso jugador local desde muy joven, Ryota también se volvió adicto al baloncesto. Another artist I looked at was English author and illustrator Lauren Child. Her style is characterised by a combination of different media such as photographs, magazines, cuttings of physical materials and scanned materials. Her work has long since been familiar to me because I used to read her books when I was a kid, particularly Charlie and Lola, so I’ve known about the technique of using real life elements alongside or within illustration for a while. 

In the past, the creative influences for her work have come from her love of doll houses, patterned textiles, interior design, American films and comic strips. When creating illustrated stories for children, she doesn’t shy away from allowing her own art to be influenced by all kinds of different media. 

In a 2017 interview with Claire Armitstead, she talks about going to see Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands and how the combination of lighting, costume and set design felt like a collage in of itself, becoming a great inspiration to her. She follows this up by saying “That’s why I’m convinced that ideas shouldn’t be compartmentalised and one should allow oneself to be inspired by film or TV.”.

To me this statement is very fitting when it comes to my project and the inspirations behind it. All the aesthetics I’m trying to get across in my illustrations have roots in lots of kinds of media that I’m heavily inspired by, including lots of different artists. Examples of these include Jamie Hewlett, Seita Inoue, Atsushi Ohkubo, Freddy Carrasco, Toma Ngyuen, Jean Giraud and Shoichi Aoki. Other than artists, I’m also drawing lots of inspiration from media such as Splatoon, Gorillaz, Soul Eater, Jet Set Radio, Daft Punk, Redline, Treasure Planet, DC and more. Finally I’m also inspired by certain fashion and web aesthetics in general such as Y2K, cybercore, retrowave, harajuku, atompunk and sci-fi. TLDR lots of sources of inspiration.

With my 23rd birthday in hand, I have finally decided to start posting from my version of Voltage's 10th anniversary fanbook. One game per day will be posted until I reach the last one in the booklet. Starting off in the order listed in the booklet, and with my favorite Voltage game series of all time (ahem, 2013 actually), Celebrity Darling is here! I ordered this book in December 2017 and received it in winter of 2018. A lot of years have passed since I last picked up a J-dorama; in fact, I’m not even sure if Zankai Girl was the last I watched or Shitsuren Chocolatier! I would usually watch Japanese dramas if an Arashi member, Ryo Nishikido, Yamapi, Oguri Shun or Ikuta Toma was in it which made it harder for me to decide which dramas to watch. I was less finicky when it came to movie actors though considering I have watched tons recently, and also became a fan of Takeru Satoh ever since I saw him on Rurouni Kenshin and in person. 

News of this Boys Over Flowers Season 2 came during my first year in senior high school but I was too occupied with school to watch. Heck I had to give up the opportunity to see Penn Badgley in person because I had a test for Statistics and Probabilities the next day! Currently I’m taking a break from college due to the pandemic so I can binge on all the dramas, animes and mangas I want for now. It was actually Kaguya Sama: Love is War that lead me to finally watch Hanadan, mainly because I got curious about Sho Hirano. He played the role of Shirogane Miyuki in the live action film and I thought he isn’t a bad actor so why not check out his dramas. I was really surprised to learn he is a member of King & Prince because I never really paid attention to the Johnny’s idols who debuted after Hey! Say! Jump and Kis-My-Ft2. I was too hung up on the Golden Era of the Johnny’s trainees that it became difficult to accept the younger generation of idols and actors in the Japanese entertainment scene. I have always been curious about Hanadan and realizations about the current Japanese entertainment scene gave me a wake up call. My standards were left too high, and I got stuck there so it was a good thing be woken up because it made me less judgmental. It is for this reason that I was able to enjoy watching this drama without setting expectations.

I binge watched it with a break of five hours of sleep before finishing off the remaining five episodes. It left me with a heart full of warmth. Finally, I found another drama which gave me a hundred percent satisfaction (except, I believe Oto and Hartuto deserved a kiss scene in the last episode). I was totally floored because I could not help but think this is exactly how I would write a drama if I became a drama writer! I love how the story felt similar yet different from the Hana Yori Dango of Jun Matsumoto and Inoue Maou. I love the fact that Oto and Haruto became friends despite the growing romantic feelings they had for each other. I also love that Oto tried her best to stay with Tenma till the very end. I must admit, I was totally on Tenma’s side until he chose not to believe Oto over Konoe. It was a total game changer in terms of who to root for because a huge boo boo. I was actually waiting for what type of flaw the writer would incorporate to his character to make him a bit less deserving of Oto’s affections. She grew up a lot after the sudden riches to rags events in her life thus building a wall between them. Haruto also matured a lt after being involved with her; it was especially evident when he apologized to the Hase family because Oto was not able to attend the family lunch. He took the blame and even testified for her how much she values Tenma in her heart. I was like Damn, Kaguragi is all grown up! 

I must add though that him fan-boying over Tsukasa, Rui and Sojiro felt like me fan-girling over these people too! I totally understand why he was so starstruck to see them in person. He was so cute especially when he encountered Rui and Sojiro! I almost died of envy with his Tsukasa hologram in his own room! Honestly, I have so much praises for this drama partly because a lot of the cliche from Hana Yori Dango was either eliminated or given a twist. I also like that the story gave a lot of attention to the friendship aside from romance and intense opposition from parents. It was a refreshing yet familiar drama.

Although it took me two years to pick up this drama, I hope it can continue to receive more love in the future because it deserves just that. Also viewers would be well off not comparing the actors and drama to Hana Yori Dango, after all, this is NOT a remake. It is set a decade after the legendary F4 of Eitoku Academy.

Nota Bene: Isn’t Airi just so cute? She was the cutest character of them all! Also, I love the fact that Utada Hikaru lent her voice once again with Hatsukoi as the main theme along with king and prince’s Cinderella Girl.
