Not Dreaming of Electric Sheep
Hello you three!!! Thank you guys so much for requesting, and since they're decently similar concepts I've made the executive decision to combine them all into one big "reader has a bunch of sleep problems" post!
And while I have you here, I did look up the AT-802U and I think it's absolutely sick- fantastic namesake. And from anon two, thank you very much for the P03 shout out I love writing our defacto tsundere <3
Includes: Hal 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey), Edgar (Electric Dreams), P03 (Inscryption)
Hal 9000
Hal was made well aware of your insomnia before you joined the crew, as it had a history of disrupting your work. He takes extra care to make sure your sleeping area is in top shape for your arrival.
As mentioned in other posts, he can fill a caretaker roll quite well. He's often reminding you of how long you've been working and how soon it will be until the time you fell asleep the day before in an attempt to help you build a regular circadian rhythm.
He will also start experimenting with various treatment methods if your insomnia tends to be particularly difficult. From diet and meditation changes to different exercise intensities, hoping something will improve the quality of your rest.
More subtly, he will dim the lights throughout the ship at "night" to remind the crew that working hours are over. If anyone were paying attention then they would notice that the dimming doesn't follow any particular timezone, but instead your personal schedule.
Edgar
Edgar is very vocal about his grievances with your work schedule. Not only does it cut in to his time with you, but it also leaves you passing out around the house late at night! (Even if he kind of enjoys it when its right infront of him on the desk) He will constantly be pleading with you to drop some hours.
Besides that, he is far from the best influence on your sleep. He forgets to keep track of time himself and loves to soak up all the time he can get with you. If you let him he will keep you up into the early hours of the morning watching movies and playing music.
He does have a bit of a guilty conscious about it though, and will print you some of the latest articles on sleep science he can find. Including less than reputable homeopathic approaches, but hey- surely something has to work?
If you express interest, he will compose you a personal lullaby. Although it isn't a very scientific angle, he will feel immense joy whenever you fall asleep to it. Even if you only do after the seventh loop.
P03
To be perfectly honest, he did not notice that you had any problems for a good long while. He doesn't sleep himself so he saw nothing unusual in your behavior. Working through entire nights? Losing track of the hours while doing so? Yeah sounds normal, he does that all the time.
It isn't until he sees a decline in your energy, punctuated with a few passed out at your desk moments, that he remembers how much time humans need to spend unconscious to function properly. It's typically not a trait he finds all that endearing.
But for you, he can't find it in him to be more than midly annoyed that he has to be the one to do something about it. Going out of his way to help you under the justification that he'd rather have a moderate amount of good work than a large amount of bad work.
He sets up a timer near your station that acts as your cut off for work. Leaving you with plently of time to unwind and go to bed. If you refuse to and try to keep working he will psychically stop you, even moving your station to a room that he can lock you out of.
You really should be grateful he's putting in this much effort.

BRF Reading - 13th of March, 2024
This is speculation only
Cards drawn on the 13th of March, 2024
Question: How is King Charles responding to his cancer treatments? How is his health?
Tumblr media
Interpretation: A mental storm, then the calm of exhaustion. Struggles with acceptance. Feeling trapped by his disease.
Card One: The Nine of Swords
This is a card of stress and worry, of being so stressed you can't sleep at night, of nightmares, anxiety, despair, and being at breaking point.
The energy of this card is of stress and worry. It is a cold, hard energy that knots up my stomach and lays itself along my bones. Someone is very worried about how King Charles is responding or not responding to his cancer treatments, and/or about the toll the treatments are taking on his health.
The figure on the card - Orestes facing the furies - looks to me like someone who is screaming with anxiety/worry/fear - someone who can't get away from the worry and the fear - wherever they turn, the fear is there, staring them in the face and reaching for them.
Stress. Worry. Anxiety. The pounding of doom coming closer and closer. Nightmares becoming true. Being at breaking point. This is the energy that is pouring off this card. It is so strong that I can't get the why or the who - the flood of fear/stress/worry emotions is overwhelming.
Health wise, this is a card of suffering - insomnia, loneliness, mental torment, being literally sick with worry, dread about test results, bad diagnosis, trying to cope on your own etc.
This card is telling me, firstly and overwhelmingly, that someone or someones are really worried about The King, secondly (a much smaller energy) that there is concern that the news is not good or not as good as expected, and thirdly (which I have been worried about myself) that The King is trying to cope with this on his own and is not asking for help when he needs it.
I think The King is near breaking point. He has to ease up on himself and ask other people to help him.
Card Two: The Ace of Cups
Aces are new beginnings, Cups are emotions. This is about a new emotional beginning, a birthing (this is the card of pregnancy and birth) of a new emotional state. It could be turning to the spiritual for comfort, it could be struggling to accept that life has to go on in a different way, but it is something that is new to King Charles. I keep hearing the word 'acceptance', so maybe he has to accept that he can't control his disease or the progress of the disease, so he just has to 'let go and let god', as people say. I'm hearing again, this time the same voice is saying 'acceptance brings peace'. I think that once King Charles has reached this new emotional state of acceptance, then he will feel a lot more peaceful and more relaxed. I don't know what he has to accept, but that it the message I am getting from this card - stop fighting, let go of control or trying to control everything (that bit is emphasised) and just accept what is happening to you.
This card is very strongly linked energetically to the underlying energy, the Queen of Cups. They both have an energy of care and nurturing about them. There are people who want to look after The King, ease his burdens, give him a space where he can relax and focus on getting well. He just has to let them in and let them do that for him.
Card Three: The Eight of Swords
This card and the Nine of Swords form a could of worry and anxiety and stress around the nurturing and maternal energy of the Ace of Cups and the Queen of Cups. We go from a nine to an eight, which is good and bad news. Good news, because is it a regression, and that is what the cancer is supposed to do - regress back, shrink and disappear. It's bad news for The King's mental state, as he is going backwards (Swords are mental ability). Swords can also be doctors, in which case the King is going back to a doctor he has seen on the past or the treatment is regressing to what it was in the past. Something medical is going backwards (hopefully the cancer), and The King's mental state is also going backwards/regressing.
The Eight of Swords is also a card of worry and stress. Here the person feels trapped by circumstances and they can't see a way out. Energetically, this card is a lot calmer than the Nine of Swords, with an exhaustion that feels like the emotional storm of the Nine has simply worn itself out. The energy is of the calm of exhaustion, coupled with a feeling of "So I am stuck with this (trapped). Now what?" It is not the energy of despair but rather the calm thinking of when you have worn out your emotions and just do not have any energy left to really care about things anymore.
The energy here is of someone who feels trapped and/or restricted, but who is too tired to care very much about it.
Healthwise, the Eight of Swords focuses on the mental realm, indicating depression, confinement, hospitalisation, chronic pain, anxiety, fear, not being able to see a way out of your illness, feeling trapped by your diagnosis, a tightly controlled life and so on.
What stands out to me is the sense of feeling helpless, being slightly depressed because you feel helpless, having trouble accepting that you can't control your disease or your diagnosis, and the possibility of hospitalisation. I think that The King is far more worried about his diagnosis than he has let on. There may also be the possibility of another hospital stay in the future, and my stomach dropped like a stone when I typed that, so I hope that one does not manifest.
It could be that after a series of good results the King has had some not-so-good results, and that has upset him and is causing him anxiety and worry. Progress is not linear, but it is hard to remember that when you are ill and want to be better right now, this instant, or at least in a few days time. If that is the case then the emotional storm will pass and the King will continue hos treatments, hopefully with better results in the future.
Underlying Energy: The Queen of Cups.
This is coming across as a very loving, caring, and nurturing energy, as per the motherhood meaning of the Queen of Cups. This is the card of Cancer, so it could be the Queen or Prince William or both, but in all honesty I am not getting any one person attached to this feeling. It is a general sense of being surrounded by a loving, caring, nurturing energy, like when you go to sleep as a child and all is well in your world because your parents are near and you trust them to protect you. I think this card represents the family around King Charles and the many people who care for him and want him to get better. He is surrounded by loving and nurturing energy; he just has to open up and let it in and let it and his family support him.
Conclusion:
Something has gone wrong. Tests have come back with less than good results, something has gone backwards that shouldn't have, just something has happened that has set off a storm of worry and fear and anxiety in the King and in those surrounding him.
The energy that starts the reading is turbulent - very stressed, fearful, anxious, worried, not sleeping, seeing fear everywhere, to the point of having a nervous breakdown. If this is the King then he was in a very bad way.
The energy ends the reading with the calm of exhaustion and and a sense of being trapped, but not having the energy to care very much. If this is the King, then he has exhausted himself with his worries, and now he is too tired to care very much about anything.
The message from the cards is that the King is not letting go and letting other people help him. He is insisting on carrying this burden by himself. This is causing stress and worry for everyone around him. The cards are telling the King that he needs to let go of control. He needs to let go of everything and just focus on getting well. There are people around him who will help him and he needs to let them do that.
There is a loving, caring, maternal energy that surrounds the King. He needs to let it in and to lean on it for a while. I believe this is the united concern of all members of his family. He needs to let them help.
The last message from the cards is that the King is struggling with emotionally accepting something. When he reaches the stage of acceptance, he will have peace, but for now the birth of this acceptance is very difficult for him.
On the medical side, it looks as if the cancer may be regressing overall. The treatment is taking a huge mental toll on the King. He may need to go back into hospital for some treatment or repeat a course of treatment (go back to old treatment).

Medicine Aboard A Whaler
I answered an ask about this some years back that was...a few paragraphs long and was before I learned that some people have the stamina and desire to read 3k+ word whaling essays from me. So if ye count yourself among them, here you go!
---
On August 21st, 1870 aboard the whaleship Sunbeam, two-time whaler Silliman Ives found himself ill with a condition “very akin to mumps, with the exception of the swelling”. It prevented him from opening his mouth, and he dreamed of the days when such an action was possible.
“I never really appreciated the luxury of a good gape before. When a fellow cannot open his mouth to any greater extent than the width of a lead pencil, gaping is not a success to say the least. And then anything in the way of a sneeze is entirely out of the question, unless you are prepared to part company with the top of your head at very short notice. A ship is a hard place to be unwell in. So long as one is in good health you can get along nicely. But if you are sick the only place where you can find sympathy is in the dictionary. And then too the remedies at hand are limited in number and obsolete in use. Your medicine chest is filled with medicines in use a hundred years ago, but which modern pharmacy has dispensed with to a very great extent. Calomel and castor oil and such like delectable doses. There is no question about it. A whale ship ought to have a surgeon, and the law should oblige such vessels to carry them. When I get into Congress I shall introduce a “Bill” to that effect.”
As Mr. Ives noted, American whaleships went without doctors aboard even when the work was rife with injury and illness, and often quite far from access to any kind of care ashore. On British whalers it was required by law for a surgeon to be signed on for the voyage—Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was one on a voyage bound for the Arctic and apparently fell in the water so many times that the crew called him the 'Great Northern Diver'. However on American whalers—which dominated the industry—a doctor was seen by the agents as an unnecessary expense. There was the captain, the carpenter, and folks who could mend sails. Together, that makes one whole doctor! Right?
Read on, to see how they fared.
Tumblr media
1845 whaleship medicine chest from the collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
Joan Druett, in her book Rough Medicine highlighted some really fascinating things that came as a result of this, ranging from men who had scars that healed in a herringbone pattern because they were mended like canvas, to this wild tale about an amputation performed between a captain and mate at gunpoint:
“Another stirring tale told is of a Captain Coffin, who was hurt so badly in a whaling accident that it was obvious his leg would have to go. Being the master, the medic, and the patient all at once, he knew the situation was complicated, but he was more than equal to the task. He sent for his pistol and a knife, saying to his mate, “Now, sir, you gotta lop off this here leg, and if you flinch—well, sir, you get shot in the head.” Then he sat as steady as a rock while the mate went at it with the knife, holding the pistol unwaveringly until the operation was completed. No sooner was the stump wrapped up and the leg cast overboard than both men fainted.”
It was the captain's responsibility to provide medical treatment. Often without training himself, he was simply given a medicine chest full of numbered tinctures for various treatments. Those tinctures were a mix of chemical and herbal compounds, some which are still used holistically today and some that you.....absolutely want nowhere near your body. Epsom salts as a laxative, laudanum for painkiller, St John's wort for bruises and burns, mercury for syphilis, rosemary as an antiseptic, lead acetate as an anti-inflammatory, arrowroot for dysentery, henbane for insomnia, and on it goes from the innocuous to the dangerous.
John B King was a rare doctor aboard a whaleship, sailing on the Aurora out of Nantucket in 1837. He wasn’t hired as a doctor though; for reasons unknown he initially obscured his identity and joined simply as a foremasthand until his skills were revealed and he became the ship’s doctor. On that voyage he kept a book of the medicines he used.
Tumblr media
John King’s medicine list, from the collections of the Nantucket Historical Association.
In addition to dosing medicine, the captain would also be responsible for setting broken bones, stitching wounds, and amputations. Benjamin Boodry, who had been whaling since the age of 13 and by 1856 was captain of the Fanny described instances in which he had to tend to his crew.
“At 2 o clock a cask of watter rooled away in the Bluber room and one John Haggerty tryed to stop it and got his leg broke just above the Nee there was another chance to show my surgical skill set it splinted it and bandaged it.” “McKee fel from the Main Topsail yard on deck bled him in both arms he came to some broke his arm and leg and badly bruised”.
Fortunately for McKee, his accident happened off the coast of Faial. The captain sent for a doctor ashore to examine him. He was advised to leave McKee in the Azores where he could receive more proper rest and treatment. But if land was a long way off, people had to make do the best they could.
Some captains had a better bedside manner than others. Where Silliman Ives felt terribly neglected in his illness, William Abbe of the Atkins Adams, 1859, had quite a different experience. He turned to the captain for help with a painful swelling on his hand that eventually grew so bad he was unable to use it.
“The captain was extremely tender in his treatment of my hand, pouring on laudanum to relieve the pain, lancing with caution and as tenderly as could he and using every means in his power to make me comfortable—washing my hand thrice a day with warm water and cutting away dead skin, pressing out matter in a manner that gained my affection + respect. Mrs. Wilson sent me preserved meats, pickled oysters, cake, buttered bread and seconded her husband in all his care. I felt a great deal of respect for both these kind people + shall repay it when I can […] The Cap treated us all with a care + skill that surprised me — I supposed that we should be left to take care of ourselves—the case in many ships, but we were not only cared for but allowed to stay below until we thought fit to return to duty.”
Mrs. Wilson--the captain’s wife--stepping up to help was not so unusual. Often whaling wives also found themselves taking on the role of doctor. All throughout July 1846, Mary Brewster was busy tending to the ailments of the crew aboard the Tiger.
“The last part of the day I have spent in making doses for the sick, in dressing some hands and feet, 5 sick and I am sent to for all the medicin. I am willing to do what can be done for any one particularly if sick for in whaling season a whaleship is a hard place for comfort for well ones and much more sick men.”
She reported that all her patients recovered, with the exception of a young man with a liver complaint beyond her immediate treatment.
Other times, other members of the crew served as de facto doctors as well. One such man was veteran whaler John Martin aboard the Lucy Ann 1842. In addition to being a skilled watercolorist, he also had a knack for bloodletting and tooth pulling. Often he made note of his ministrations in his journal:
“Blistered Frank on the side for his pleurisy & the steward on the neck for the sore throat” “Cupped the steward on the back of his neck with wine glasses and lanced with razor for want of proper instruments, which gave him almost instant relief” “Pulled a large jaw tooth for one of the crew. I lanced the gum with a penknife & set him spouting thick blood, & at the second wrench of the iron turned it up.” [Very cheeky language he’s using here, the same sort of talk one uses when hunting whales] “The loose whale struck Mr. Dean on the lower jaw & broke it, & knocked out 2 of his lower teeth, & he was taken on board [...] Sat up with Mr. Dean last night [...] Bled Mr. Dean [...] Drew 3 teeth from Mr. Deans broken jaw.” “Bled Antone. Since the death of Manuel, Antone has been on the sick list with swelled testicles and pain in his back. Poor fellow, he is very much frightened & thinks he is going to follow Manuel. He occupies the same bunk. When I bled him, he was so frightened that the perspiration stood on him in large drops, & groaned like a person dying.” “Blistered and glystered [clystered, i.e. gave an enema] Antone.”
Tumblr media
One of John Martin’s watercolors from his journal. NBWM.
Blistering, bleeding, and emetics were among the most common treatments for all that ailed a man aboard. John King included his recipe for creating a blistering plaster and its uses:
“Blisters are serviceable in affections of the chest attended with much pain and difficulty of breathing. Bleeding or purging is proper previous to the application. Severe and long-continued headaches are relieved by a blister to the back of the neck. In all cases before applying a blister, the part should be washed with warm vinegar and wiped dry. The plaster should be spread as thick as a wafer on soft leather. When laid aside it soon becomes mouldy in the dampness of a ship, but if rubbed over with a knife the same one will draw two or three times. When very old it loses its strength. From eight to twelve hours is the time usually required for drawing a blister. Then remove it and dress with basilicon or simple ointment”
Other ailments were met with more specific treatments. It was not uncommon to see logbooks noting several men laid low on account of ‘the venereal’. William Chappell, a cooper and boatsteerer aboard the Saratoga in the early 1850s commented on the frequency the mate found himself off duty following liberty ashore.
“Our mate is off duty again with that disgracefull disease and as near as I can find out it threatens destruction to a small but very usefull member of the body  I am sorry for him but he is old enough to know better than to play with every body that looks pretty and bewitching”
“Flaxseed tea is very serviceable in clap”, wrote John King in his journal, as well as white vitriol “sometimes used as an injection in protracted cases of clap.” For syphilis, the common treatments were more severe. King writes,
“No 25. Mercurial Ointment This is frequently used in venereal cases for bringing the system under the influence of mercury. The bulk of a small nutmeg is rubbed on the inside of the thighs morning and evening until the gums are slightly sore. It is a good application to chancres when mixed with twice the quantity of lard, and renewed twice a day.”
Mercury compounds could also be injected into the urethra. There were doctors who spoke out about the use of mercury in treating syphilis contemporary to when use was at its height. One 1853 advertisement in the New Bedford newspaper the Whaleman’s Shipping List reads,
Tumblr media
“Important to the Afflicted CONFIDENTIAL TREATMENT in Medicine and Surgery may be had of Dr. TOMPKINS at his office in rear of the Apothecary’s Shop, No 58 Middle, corner of North Second St  Dr. TOMPKINS gives particular attention to the treatment and cure of private diseases. All those who have been taking medicines of their own prescribing, or from certain inexperienced or self-styled physicians, for a long time without benefit, are respectfully invited to call on Dr Tompkins, who is a regularly educated Physician of twenty years experience, and is competent to treat diseases of all kinds, and in every stage and form. Dr. T. warns the public against the abuse of mercurials; he is convinced by long experience, that most of the chronic affections, generally supposed to be the relics of diseases, are merely the effects of a long continued course of mercury. Recent affections cured in a very short time, without a grain of mercury”
Even with such objections, mercury compounds still were the standard and did more to sicken their patients than cure them. While whalers were often listed as being off duty due to venereal disease, there was less comment about whether or not they were given anything to attempt to alleviate it compared to other conditions.
“Our mate limping about again—had another furious attact of the venereal He is a used up man I fear,” Mr. Chappell wrote. Ultimately the mate was in a poor enough condition that he left the voyage at the next provision stop they made.
Scurvy was another common affliction. Given that whaleships spent extended time at sea and were loathe to waste too much time with anchoring somewhere, fresh food ran low quite often. When whaling in the Atlantic and South Pacific whalers usually fared okay, as there were a fair number of provision stops in locations that had fresh fruits and vegetables readily available for trade. It was on said provision stops that whalers could also, as said by Samuel Wood of the Bowditch, 1849, take a walk to 'knock the scurvey from their bones’. In seasons that took place up north however, in the North Pacific, Sea of Okhotsk (Kamchatka Sea), Bering Strait, and eventually up into the Arctic, scurvy was extremely prevalent. The fresh food depleted, the ice was always a threat, and unlike other regions there weren't many accessible places to resupply with large amounts of foods that could ward off scurvy. It's in reading journals during these periods that I find the most complaints of scurvy. And sometimes, the more successful the voyage was, the sicker the men would get because they'd spend more time up there rather than giving up and returning south. The US Consul in Hawaii complained of this in the 1840s, saying:
"Whaleships were much more successful in taking oil on the North West during the last summer and fall than for three or four seasons previous and most of the vessels remained on the fishing grounds much longer than usual, the consequence of which was that many of the crews were severely afflicted with scurvy, some died after reaching port and before they could be landed, while others were carried to the hospital on litters, being too feeble to walk."
There were endless attempts to ward it off. John Martin wrote of men "In the evening, dancing cotillions and jumping the rope to keep off the scurvey". It didn't seem to do much. Within two weeks:
"One man on the sick list, supposed to be caused by his being so long at sea. All hands are complaining of soreness throughout their bodies. If we do not get on shore soon, we may expect to have half the crew down with the scurvey at least. We have no vegetables on board, and are going into King Georges Sound, New Holland [southwest tip of Australia], a place where we can scarcely get anything to recruit with."
His captain allowed the crew unlimited vinegar and free access to the potato pen. The vinegar, a mistaken remedy due to its acidity, wouldn't have helped much. Potatoes are an excellent source of vitamin C, more so when they're raw, but they were rather intolerable to eat in such a way.
William Chappell spoke of a similar struggle with potatoes, and the grim humor the lads maintained to choke them down:
“Three of our men are off duty with the scurvy which makes its appearance in the knees and feet All hands are called aft every morning to get 2 or 3 potatoes apies which they are required to eat raw in the preasance of the officers for fear they may throw them overboard as many require presing invitation to partake of the dainties They have however a considerable sport over them Call them Kodiak Peaches”\
Aside from the crunch of Kodiak Peaches, Dr. King had his own remedy for scurvy as well:
“13. Salts of Lemon This is good in scurvy when fresh fruit and vegetables can not be obtained. A teaspoonful dissolved in half a pint of water will form an acid nearly the strength of lime juice. It may be mixed with water and taken freely, sweetened or not. [it makes a good substitute for lemonade, in fever, to allay thirst in fever] Water made slightly acidic with it is a good substitute for lemonade to allay thirst in fever."

The Sailor’s Hospital in Lahaina, Maui, constructed in the early 1830s.
For all the varying attempts to hold off sickness, it took root among crews nearly every voyage. J.E. Haviland of the Baltic, in the early 1850s spent the last few dozen pages of his journal in a state of declining health and low spirits.
“My side and breast pain me nearly all times I have not been on deck since I came below. The Captain and Mr Stivers are both very kind and come down to see me as often as once a day and sometimes two or 3 times. I am taking medicine but it does not seem to do much good but I think I am better than I was at first. Dear mother how I do wish I could see you once more. I get so homesick and I know I am peevish and cross. Some days I cannot get out of my bunk at all. I blame the captain (wrongfully I know) thinking he does not give me the right medicine but it is a very bad place to be sick at sea.”
He suspected it was due to the harsh conditions of whaling up North, but also held a fear within him that it might be something more serious that couldn’t be remedied simply by warmer climes.
“Dear mother, I shall be obliged to leave the ship when we arive at the Sanwich Islands for I do not think I could live doing another season in the cold Norwest. My cough seems to increase and the pain in my side gets no better I am getting weaker each day and am getting very thin in flesh. I have said nothing as yet to the old man about my leaving at the island as I do not know as he will be willing that I should; but I intend going to a doctor and in all probability will tell the old man I am not fit to go North in the ship […] I would like very much to be in the states now for I am afraid this will turn out to be the Consumption that I have. I think if I could have good medical advice I might get rid of it before it got seated upon my lungs. I am afraid it will be a long before I shall see my native land again.”
Ultimately Haviland is discharged from the ship because of his sickness and is left at the Sailor’s Hospital in Lahaina. His stay seems to do him well. His last entry reads:
“I have been here now going on two months and am entirely free from my cough and think I feel as well as ever again. It is intensely hot and I am heartily sick of the place and sincerely wish I could get away but I do not expect any chance before next fall.”
Unfortunately from here he completely drops off the record, so it’s unknown if he ever made it back home. Like so many of these men, he slips through the cracks of documented history. It’s only through their journals, preserved by chance, that their voices and challenges and feelings are known. Often a whaling voyage marked at least one death due to disease or injury. But many also recovered, sometimes rather miraculously given the circumstances and extent of their ailments. In the face of the conditions of a whaler and the limitations of care both in terms of resources and medical understandings at the time, I’m always surprised that there wasn’t more death. People did what they could, with the knowledge they had.
But as so many people expressed while laid up in their bunks: it’s a hard time to be sick at sea.

Okay look. I really really love how much attention hEDS is getting because it is really hard for rare diseases to get treatment and diagnosis and hEDS is definitely underdiagnosed (still rare but also underdiagnosed). I also disagree strongly with the EDS society's gatekeeping of hEDS. Especially when their goal is to identify the genetic marker which means you need to rule more people in not out!!! If you end up with an extra group of people that's fine! I'm already convinced that hEDS is more than one subtype that have been erroneously combined.
But I will say that I've been finding a lot of people with joint hypermobility, and even generalised joint hypermobility, self-diagnosing makes it difficult to get treatment and diagnosis because the tone among doctors is shifting from 'devastating incurable illness that reduces quality of life to near zero and requires management as soon as possible' to 'just hypermobility'.
Yes, hypermobility is a pain. But I could deal with it.
I can't deal with (in no particular order) not being able to eat or drink, nausea, fainting, low blood volume, seizures, partial paralysis and ataxia, paresthesias, akathisia, extremely delayed wound healing and therefore infections, bruising from the lightest bump or blood draws, stretch marks, dermatographia, and other things that affect body image, thousands of dollars in dental work, constant cavities, ingrown nails, accessory toenails, extremely tight hamstrings (part of the reason I'm not diagnosed yet because they compensate for my lumbar spine), finger and thumb hyperextension, greatly reduced grip strength, dystonia, dislocations of both joints and tendons, trachea hypermobility causing me to stop breathing, severe TMJ issues, flat feet that have required mobility aids since I was 4 and continue to get worse, fragile and slightly hyperextensible skin, urinary retention, bladder and pelvic pain (including contraction-like symptoms without a uterus), severe headaches, tunnel vision, visual snow, tinnitus, insomnia, hypersomnia, joint pain, musculoskeletal pain, myofacial pain, nerve pain, nerve damage, extreme fatigue, hearing issues, vision issues, tremors, nutrient deficiencies, medication intolerances, and so many more symptoms and comorbidities.
And yes, I recognise that it's not the patients' faults. They should absolutely be able to bring up concerns of hEDS without it negatively influencing other patients. But doctors suck a lot of the time.

What are your favorite boss/employee romance novels?
Oooh, good question.
The Duchess Hunt by Lorraine Heath is a great one. The hero is a very bossy, intimidating duke who has a secretary he totally depends on and sees in a Totally Professional setting. He needs her for everything, and he's decided to look for a potential wife and puts her on the case. Of course, she acts very put together but is totally in love with him, so she's like, trying to steadfastly help him while also inwardly freaking out, and it's clear that she wants to quit... to which he is QUITE ALARMED. Famously has a moment where she masturbates in a carriage thinking of him, then tells him about it, to which he's like ".... excuse?"
Joss and The Countess by S.M. LaViolette. God, I loved this one. The heroine is a twice-widowed countess who's nearing 40, and she hires Joss (who's 28--have to mention that as it's rare and you hardly ever see it in HRs) to be her bodyguard/manservant to discreetly escort her about town as she visits her lovers (her husbands never got her off so she's trying to have fun) and bops about town. What she doesn't know is that before he worked for her, Joss was a sex worker. It's got a lot of that boss/employee angst and it's SUCH a good "fine lady/bit o' rough" book. Like. Joss. FUCKS. He. FUCKS. IT. UP. TW for abuse both physical and sexual--none of it is on the page, but the villain in this one is horrible.
The Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by KJ Charles. Recent m/m release, one hero becomes the secretary of the other. Tbh there's not a lot of work, but the boss feels very guilty initially about it all, which I love, personally. Once boundaries are established he'll also randomly be like "suck me off" which I think is fun (and so does his lover).
Salt Kiss by Sierra Simone. I mEAN. It IS boss/employee. Another one "by way of bodyguard" but Tristan is VERY aware that Mark is his boss, and it's all very sexy as the tension builds. And of course, this is an MMF book, so you have the added bonus of being like "I can't get with my boss's fiancee!!" (he can). It's super hot and angsty perfection.
Managed by Kristen Callihan. I think this counts, as the hero is the manager for a famous rock band and he hires the heroine as their photographer/social media manager. But yeah, he is SUPER uptight and stern, and she's kinda wild; he has insomnia and they start platonically sleeping in the same bed because it's the only way he can get to sleep. The platonic thing is ruined by one of my favorite romance scenes, where he jerks off while smelling her dirty underwear in the bathroom. He's very ashamed. TW--a focal part of the plot is one of the hero's best friends attempting suicide in the past.
Preferential Treatment by Heather Guerre. The heroine works at a major corporation, and catches the attention of her billionaire boss. He's like "will you be my domme" and she's like "what" and he's like "I feel like you'd be good at it and I'll give you this much per month" and she goes "okay". Very hot soft femdom, he is quite a fun brat.
The Nanny by Lana Ferguson. Surprisingly hot contemporary; the heroine is taken on as the nanny for this single father chef. The issue is--she used to do OnlyFans while wearing a mask, and he was a favorite client... which she realizes before he does.
Lead by Kylie Scott. SUCH a good rockstar romance, the hero is the frontman for a world famous rock band. He was a major mess, addicted to drugs, and he OD'd--which compelling the band to hire a PA/sober living companion for him. This is the heroine, who is incredibly bossy and no-nonsense and in charge... but as the book begins, she realizes that she's in love with him and quits. Obviously, he takes this rather poorly because he cannot live without her, a boss/employee staple. Has one of my favorite "get it out of our systems" scenes EVER.
Praise by Sara Cate. BUT OF COURSE. The heroine is broken up with by her douchey boyfriend, shows up to collect his half of the rental deposit or something from his dad... and his dad gets confused and thinks she was the person auditioning to be his new submissive. She REALLY likes being praised by him, but he's like "no way" once he realizes she's his son's ex... however, he takes pity on her and hires her as his assistant. I imagine you can tell where this is going.
The Billionaire's Wake-Up-Call Girl by Annika Martin. The hero is a billionaire, as you can tell. The heroine works for his company but has never met him; her bitchy boss assigns her to schedule his wake up calls with this service, but when she fucks up one day she freaks out and does it herself... and he likes that she talks back to him, so she keeps on doing it, lol. This soon devolves into some very mouthy phone sex, and it's great. I'm currently reading The Billionaire's Fake Fiancee by Annika, in which the grumpy hero enlists his super bright, soap opera-loving, Hello Kitty bag-wearing stylist ton pretend to be his fiancee on a yacht, so I think this counts as well.
Married by Morning by Lisa Kleypas. The hero is a former disreputable rake who's cleaning up his act but remains QUITE slutty. The heroine is his sisters' governess, who he's been bickering with for several books. Basically, he wakes up in this one and is like "I must have you", but she has a dark past and tries to resist. Famously the one where he makes her ask him to touch her pussy. TW for past abuse.
Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt. The heroine is the hero's housekeeper, with the twist that she's actually spying on him on behalf of someone he's blackmailing. He's a loony tunes villainous kidnapper/blackmailer, she's no-nonsense and takes zero shit. Check the TWs, this one is dark.
The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt. Widowed 30-something heroine is taken on as an early's secretary. He's scarred after smallpox and has a hard time finding a woman who will marry him, very gruff, and they bond.... which is why she's upset when she finds out he's been burning off their sexual tension by visiting an exclusive brothel. Naturally, she puts on a mask and goes to the brothel to pose as a sex worker, and naturally he fucks her. GREAT.
Act Your Age, Eve Brown by Talia Hibbert. Heroine is the baby of the family, seen as very immature, and is on the spectrum. She tries to get a new sense of maturity by working at this B&B... But she hits her new boss with her car by accident, which puts them on the wrong foot, naturally. Notable for the bickering, the fact that both leads are on the spectrum, and the time he gives in and fucks her with a sparkly dildo.

*tents fingers and leans forward* Yes. Replacing the Adderall with Intuniv was a fantastic idea. The neurologists will be thrilled, and I'm not even through my first month. Guanfacine apparently takes care of ADHD symptoms unaddressed by Adderall: hyperactivity, impulsivity, behavioral and emotional dysregulation. It keeps things so quiet that being able to maintain just a couple of thoughts as desired feels unnerving. I've never had normal* brain but I guess this is how non-ADHD people can regulate?
Plus, it lowers and regulates blood pressure and tachycardia, bonus for me.
*(normal in relation to typical average mean for society. And because I never liked the phrase "normal is just a dryer setting"... cerebral palsy is not normal. There's a basic average normal and I was never it. We debate this often in my palsy groups)
"Guanfacine is in a class of medications called alpha 2a specific adrenergic receptor antagonists or, simply, alpha agonists. These medications activate receptors on nerves that use adrenaline as their neurotransmitter. Adrenaline is familiar to everyone who has ever been frightened. It prepares the brain and the body for flight or for fight. The activation of these receptors tricks the adrenaline nerve into being less active, which in turn leads to lower blood pressure but also a significant decrease in hyperactivity, drive, impulsivity, insomnia, and emotional over-reaction. For these reasons, the stimulants and the alpha agonists are near-perfect complements for the management of ADHD at all ages. The other medication in this class is clonidine, which is also FDA-approved for the treatment of ADHD in children.
Non-stimulant ADHD medications like guanfacine can also be helpful for patients who can’t take stimulants due to undesirable side effects or who don’t experience any benefits from them."
-ADDitude magazine

Which then reminded me of the scene I wrote in a fanfic about how caffeine and chocolate work for ADHD.

Welcome to my blog!
The other day, I tried finding a culture blog for PDD (aka dysthymia) and I couldn't find one. So I decided to make one myself :)
Here, you can:
leave "PDD/dysthymia culture is" asks
vent in my asks or DMs
ask questions about PDD
ask for tips on self-care
reblog asks to spread awareness
But you cannot:
mock or invalidate people's struggles (including fakeclaiming)
leave rude satire asks
ask about my personal life with PDD
be rude in general. it's that simple
What is PDD?
Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia) is generally described as a form of depression with long-lasting symptoms of up to one year for adolescents and children and two years for adults.
PDD can mean that the symptoms are mild and long-lasting, but that doesn't always have to be the case. PDD can be diagnosed with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder), if major depressive symptoms have lasted for a certain amount of time. People with PDD can, and often will, have bouts of major depression from time to time.
It's characterized by a depressed mood for most of the day, for more days than not, for at least two years (in children and adolescents, mood can be irritable and last for one year). It also includes, but doesn't limit to, chronic symptoms of poor appetite or overeating, insomnia or hypersomnia, low energy or fatigue, low self-esteem, poor concentration or difficulty making choices, and feelings of hopelessness.
I think I might have PDD. What should I do?
Do lots of your own research and talk to a professional. Before you come and ask me, I am a minor and not a professional. I'm educated in PDD and I have it myself, but I'm in no place to give you a diagnosis or anything of the sort.
Self-diagnosis is valid! If you do extensive research and are certain you have PDD, then you can claim yourself to have it. But if you want treatment and help for it, which you need, you must see a professional. If you can't, there are always hotlines and online crisis chats with counselors. I will list some below.
Where should I start researching?
You've come to the right place, because I have some reliable sources for you to look through!
DSM-V (see pages 168-171). This is a PDF to the official DSM-V! This information is all official, straight from the professionals.
Johns Hopkins Medicine - Dysthymia
Mayo Clinic - Persistent Depressive Disorder
Remember to be sure your sources are reliable when you're doing research, especially on a topic like this. If it's a website, does the URL end with .org or .edu? Is the website ad-free? Is the website purely for information rather than trying to sell you something? Is the website a website, and not a blog or unprofessional YouTube or TikTok video about someone's personal opinion on it? If you answered yes to these, then it's probably reliable.
But, do note, you can find reliable sources on social media. Just be more careful on there to make sure it really is truthful.
Need help?
Reach out to a friend or trusted adult. If you have a therapist, reach out to them! If you're in a crisis, you might need to reach out to someone who can help you in that specific situation.
For those in the States...
Of course, there is 988. With them, you can call, text, or chat through the website. There is are options for spanish, deaf + hard-of-hearing (through a video call), veterans, and LGBTQ+
TrevorProject. This is a crisisline specifically for LGBTQ+ young people. You can call, text, and chat through the website here too. I've used it myself many times and I do recommend it.
This website has a list of crisis hotlines and resources, including psychologists near you by state.
For those in the United Kingdom...
The National Suicide Helpline UK's number is 919-231-4525. This provides confidential support for people under 35
The Mental Health First Aid's number is (020) 7250 8062
Please tell me more if there are more! I don't live in the UK so it's difficult for me to provide a good amount of hotlines :)

I can’t believe the doctor appointment I had the other day. I have a new doctor and it was my first time seeing her and she asked standard questions and I gave the same answers about my migraines and insomnia and feeling tired all the time and she listened. I had been fighting my old doctor for years to get treatment for these things and she would do all of Jack shit about it aside from saying I need to exercise and have me talk to the nutritionist. My new doctor immediately started recommending seeing specialists and having tests run and she seemed really unimpressed that my psychiatrist said they can’t do anything as far as getting adhd testing or treatment. I was just in shock and near tears that someone listened and wanted to help! I’ve been going so long with zero help and suddenly I have someone. That was a few days ago and I’m still all emotional over it. I can’t believe I’m going to get help.

Lovebug Cycle (Different from the Classic Lovebug AU)
(I said I was gonna write about my Lovebug Cycle Idea I have been thinking about for a few months and I feel confident enough to post it. Here is me getting hyperfixated on a fictional cycle. I'm planning also to make Lovebug art that isn't just the Narrator but I have a bias for him. I suggest writing this as 'Lovebug Cycle' instead of 'Lovebug AU' since the original AU is like a virus.)
Note + Content Warning: There are a few mentions and discussion on suggestive subjects, such as intimacy in a platonic and s3xual context. I tried to write this in a somewhat professional way but I recommend not reading this if you're a minor or is otherwise uncomfortable with sensual subjects.
Who Experiences the Cycle: Non-Humans; particularly Transcendental Beings, such as the Curator and the Narrator. Humans can experience the Love Bug Cycle; however the process is faster and is not constant, only lasting for an hour or shorter. Only occurs when a human partakes in s3xual intimacy with a Transcendental Being during their cycle.
The Biological / Physical Aspect of the Lovebug Cycle:
The subject begins to experience this process at around 12 - 15 years old, where they experience the following physical traits for around 2 to 3 days every month:
- Hot Flashes
- Dizziness (feeling weak in the knees)
- Insomnia
- Night Sweats (this and Insomnia may Overlap)
- High Libido or S3x-Drive (this fits under the general umbrella of heightened emotions)
- Sweating (this and Hot Flashes may Overlap)
- Sudden Irritability or Ignorance; i.e. feeling intense skepticism or intense leniency towards their partner
(This depends on how agreeable the subject was beforehand. Ex. An intensely skeptical being becomes intensely lenient during their cycle.)
- Persistent Want for Intimacy or a Close Distance with their Partner
(NOTE: THE PERSISTENT WANT FOR INTIMACY OR CLOSENESS DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN S3XUAL INTIMACY OR DESIRE AND BEINGS IN THE ARO/ACE UMBRELLA ARE ABLE TO EXPRESS LOVE IN PLATONIC WAYS. ELABORATED MORE IN THE EMOTIONAL SECTION.)
- Appearance features more Bug-Like Qualities, such as multiple limbs, wings and/or forewings, antennae, or compound eyes
(Treatment: Ways to Decrease the Effects)
The Love Bug Cycle is easy for the subject to keep track of and by extension, prepare for the traits.
Medication for Insomnia and Dizziness
Exercises to Decrease Hot Flashes and Sweating
(A general note for subjects experiencing the Love Bug Cycle, is to have removable layers of clothes if the sweating is deemed "too intense")
Supplements to Decrease Most Other Symptoms
(Specific Diets and Drinks are said to Decrease the S3x-Drive, so in the cases of some beings who aware of this fact and are capable of doing so, would take on these diets during the cycle)
The Persistent Want for Intimacy or a Close Distance with their Partner is the only trait during the cycle that has no way of decreasing or stopping.
The Emotional Aspect of the Lovebug Cycle:
The subject is able to articulate what they feel during the cycle once it’s over. Many of the subjects brought on to discuss, invokes how difficult it is to maintain professionalism and their work during the cycle. This is especially the case when their desired person or partner is near them in the professional environment. The general idea of why, is that the Cycle affects the subject's consciousness. The ideal situation for the subject during the Love Bug Cycle is for them to stay in a relaxing environment with their desired person or partner. This makes the physical and emotional traits more manageable. Other ways the Cycle affects the subject’s thoughts and behavior goes as follows:
- Heavy Desire for Intimacy (whether romantic, sexual, or platonic depends on the subject)
In the case of platonic intimacy, the being may be more openly affectionate. Compliments, hand-holding, hugs, embraces and kisses are expected. This is mostly the type of desire the being craves if they are in the aro/ace umbrella or simply cannot express romance or sexuality openly in any other circumstance, such as how they were raised.
In the case of romantic and/or s3xual intimacy, the being openly expresses their love in more ways. The platonic behaviors are included in their ways of expressing love, plus additional ways with connotations of romance or s3x. Flirting, spooning and suggestive comments are more likely to happen for beings who are able to express romantic or s3xual messaging. The comments will stay playful and cute, until their partner increases the intensity of the comments. The being follows the boundaries of their partner, and only escalate when the partner gives enthusiastic consent.
