The anti-Israel protester who allegedly stormed a Big Apple subway car and demanded that “Zionists” raise their hands was arrested Wednesday following a weeks-long manhunt, cops said.  

Anas Saleh, 24, of Staten Island, turned himself in with his attorney at around 9.30 a.m. after the NYPD released a wanted poster last week with his face splashed across it in the wake of the hate-filled incident at Manhattan’s Union Square station.

Saleh was spotted wearing a face mask as he left the NYPD’s Transit Bureau District 2 in Lower Manhattan — flanked by several people who attempted to shield him from press photographers using scarves and black umbrellas.

He was charged with attempted coercion and released with a desk appearance ticket, authorities said.

Saleh, who is believed to have worked as a research tech at Weill Cornell Medicine’s Rhee Lab, was quickly outed as the alleged perp on social media, with Jewish activist groups also circulating his image on social media in a bid to track him down.

The school’s dean, Robert Harrington, addressed the antisemitic subway saga in a letter fired off to Cornell employees – but stopped short of mentioning Saleh by name or his arrest.

“We condemn antisemitism in the strongest possible terms. Hate speech or actions of any kind, whether anti-Semitic or Islamophobic, are not tolerated by our community,” Harrington said in the statement Wednesday.

“We are fully cooperating with the NYPD investigation, as well as conducting our own internal review, in the incident. If any employee is confirmed to be involved in this incident, appropriate action will be taken.”

It wasn’t immediately clear if Saleh was still employed there as of Wednesday, but his biography page on the lab’s website appears to have been deleted.

Saleh also appeared to have scrubbed his own social media presence last week before turning himself in to cops.  

The saga unfolded back on June 10 when Saleh allegedly entered the southbound 5 train at Union Square and started chanting, “Raise your hands if you’re a Zionist, repeat after me, this is your chance to get out.”

Mayor Eric Adams on Wednesday decried the ordeal as “vile.”

“Mayor Adams has been clear: New York City will always protect the right to free speech, but we will never allow our city to descend into lawlessness,” a City Hall spokesperson said in the wake of Saleh’s arrest.

“Threatening New Yorkers based on their beliefs is not only vile, it’s illegal and will not be tolerated. Let this be a lesson to all those who think they can act illegally and then hide: The NYPD will find you and charge you in accordance with the law.”

Saleh was ordered to go to court on July 1 to face the charges, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

“The Manhattan DA’s office and NYPD have been actively investigating this incident since it occurred. We encourage anyone with additional information to call 212-335-9040,” a rep for DA Alvin Bragg said in a statement.

He faces up to a year in prison if convicted on the attempted coercion charge.

The incident allegedly involving Saleh unfolded the same night a mob of anti-Israel protesters swarmed an exhibit in downtown Manhattan that memorialized music festival-goers who were slaughtered and kidnapped by Hamas during the Oct. 7 terror attacks.

Protesters later descended on Union Square Park and brandished a banner with “Long live October 7” scrawled across it, while one screamed that he wished “Hitler was still here” to “wipe out” the Jews.

“Harassment and coercion are crimes. We are thankful that the NYPD is acting to hold this perpetrator accountable for his actions,” Liora Rez, executive director of StopAntisemitism, one of the groups that posted about Saleh, said in a statement after his arrest.

“It will now be the responsibility of the district attorney to ensure that this antisemite is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, which all New Yorkers expect will be with the vocal and visible support of Mayor Eric Adams and all duly sworn officials of the City of New York,” the statement said.

“The public antisemitism we are seeing on the subways and streets of New York City does not only affect Jews. antisemitism degrades the lives of all Americans here in New York and is antithetical to our values as a nation,” she added.

Meanwhile, those who live near Saleh’s family home on Staten Island expressed their shock following his arrest, telling The Post on Wednesday his parents were “nice” people.

“All I know is they’re really nice and I find it hard to believe,” one woman, who declined to be named, said. “Any of them will walk right over to help you out.”

Another neighbor, who also didn’t want to be named, agreed.

“They’ve been here for less than a year. They’ve been nice,” he said. “They always wave hello.”

Feb. 15, 2024 RELEASE: J24-003 NASA Selects Texas A&M as First Approved Exploration Park Facility NASA and the Texas A&M University System announced an agreement Thursday, Feb. 15, to lease underutilized land in Exploration Park, a 240-acre development at the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The A&M System will develop a facility to enable human spaceflight research and development that enables the commercial space economy.    The lease agreement will allow the A&M System and others to use NASA Johnson land to create facilities for a collaborative development environment that increases commercial access and enhances the United States’ commercial competitiveness in the space and aerospace industries.  NASA Johnson Director Vanessa Wyche, Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, and Texas A&M University President Mark Welsh III announced the new collaboration at the AIAA-hosted Ascend Texas (ASCENDxTexas) Conference at South Shore Harbour Conference Center. “For more than 60 years, NASA Johnson has been the hub of human sI have paceflight,” Wyche said. “Exploration Park will be the next spoke in the larger wheel of a robust and durable space economy that will benefit not only exploration of the Moon, Mars and the asteroids, but all of humanity as the benefits of space exploration research roll home to Earth.” As the home of Mission Control Center for the agency’s human space missions, astronaut training, human health and space medicine, and leadership of premiere human spaceflight programs and missions, NASA Johnson leads the way for human space exploration. A lineup for ambulances and closed ICU beds paint a grim picture in Moncton

A video shared on social media of multiple parked ambulances waiting to unload patients at Dr. Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre in Moncton, N.B., are highlighting a bleak reality.

Officials say it is a direct response to multiple challenges within the hospital’s walls right now.

In a statement to CTV News, Dr. Natalie Banville Senior, the senior vice-president of Clinical Programs and Medical Affairs for Vitalité Health Network, said, in part, "limited access to primary care, hospitalization of patients awaiting admission to long-term care facilities, staff shortages and an increase in respiratory viruses are contributing to delays in our emergency departments."

She says the hospital is also reporting an outbreak of vancomycin-resistant enterococci, a bacteria resistant infection known as VRE, in the internal medicine and telemetry unit, which is exacerbating the problems.

“The public can do their part by avoiding emergency department visits for non-urgent problems and by adopting practices to prevent the transmission of infections,” added Banville Senior.

Christianna Williston, the director of communications and stakeholder relations with Ambulance New Brunswick, did confirm that 11 ambulances were parked outside of the emergency department at Georges Dumont on Tuesday at approximately 4 p.m.

“Seven of those ambulances were experiencing offload delays at that time,” said Williston in an email to CTV News. “Of the remaining four ambulances, three were at the emergency department for scheduled patient transfers, and the other ambulance was scheduled to pick up a patient to return them to a nursing home.”

She says, at the same time, there were three ambulances at The Moncton Hospital that were experiencing offload delays. 

In response to the parked ambulances, New Brunswick’s Minister of Health Bruce Fitch said more should be on the road soon.

"I was in Campbellton, the EMT school is starting up there Jan. 1 [2023], well received within the community. It's going to free up paramedics to have more ambulances on the road,” he said in Fredericton on Wednesday.

“I also went to the school in Moncton, which is also going to have EMTs on the road, there's 20 people there who should be in the ambulances probably by the end of December."

Unfortunately, it is the tale of two hospitals in the city. Just streets away at The Moncton Hospital, recruiting challenges have forced ICU beds to close.

In a statement to CTV News, the executive director Christa Wheeler-Thorne said, in part, “we can confirm we have temporarily combined our Coronary Care and Neuro ICUs at Horizon’s The Moncton Hospital (TMH). There are, collectively, 10 funded beds on these units, however the decision was recently made to temporarily close five of these beds as we navigate through these staffing challenges”

She adds that Horizon Health Network hasn’t had to create any temporary care spaces at this time and that teams are managing the current situation well.

“Horizon has a plan to recruit and retain health-care workers, including critical care staff, to our organization and we prioritize this each and every day,” she added.

However, the situation is leaving residents alarmed.

Right now, there is a New Brunswick Health Coalition rally planned for Dec. 16 in front of Champlain Place in Dieppe, N.B., with one main message for government -- spend more money on the health-care system.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Swimming in two plastic bins inside a bright sterile quarantine room at a Rhode Island zoo, 16 quarter-sized turtle hatchlings represent a growing worry for conservationist Lou Perrotti.

These eastern musk turtles, known for spending much of their lives in swamps and ponds, and emitting a foul smell when threatened, were confiscated recently in a wildlife bust. And, although the reptiles are common, their illegal sale on the internet greatly concerns Perrotti, who directs conservation programs at Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence.

“We are seeing an uptick in turtle poaching,” he said. “It’s getting ruthless where we are seeing thousands of turtles leaving the United States on an annual basis. … Turtle populations cannot take that kind of a hit with that much removal coming out of the wild.”

Wildlife trade experts believe that poaching – driven by growing demand for pets in the U.S., Asia and Europe – is contributing to the global decline of rare freshwater turtle and tortoise species. One study found that over half of the 360 living turtle and tortoise species are at risk of extinction.

Such concerns have prompted proposals to increase protection for freshwater turtles at the 184-nation Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) meeting in Panama Nov. 14 through 25.

Precise figures on the turtle trade, especially the illegal trade, can be elusive. Based on U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service data, Tara Easter, a University of Michigan doctoral candidate who studies the trade, estimated the commercial export trade for mud turtles in the U.S. increased from 1,844 in 1999 to nearly 40,000 in 2017, and for musk turtles from 8,254 in 1999 to more than 281,000 in 2016.

In their CITES proposal to ban or limit the commercial trade in more than 20 mud turtles species, the U.S. and several Latin American countries cited data from Mexico that found nearly 20,000 were confiscated, mostly at the Mexico City airport, from 2010 to 2022.

Among the world’s most trafficked animals, freshwater turtles are targeted by criminal networks that connect with buyers on the internet, then transport the reptiles to black markets in Hong Kong and other Asian cities. From there, they are sold as pets to collectors, and for commercial breeding, food and traditional medicine. In many countries, the trade is poorly regulated, or not at all.

The lucrative business – some turtle species coveted for their colorful shells or strange appearance can fetch thousands of dollars in Asia – adds to the threats turtles already face, among them climate change, habitat destruction, road mortality and the loss of eggs taken by predators.

Poachers are particularly problematic, experts say, as they target rare species and adult breeding females. Many turtle species, which can live for several decades, don’t reach reproductive maturity for a decade or more.
