Happy International Day of Sign Languages!
If you’re interested in learning, here are some free resources!:
Lifeprint: a free, self study program for American Sign Language
Gallaudet University’s Youtube channel: in conjunction with the book The Hidden Treasure of Black ASL: It’s History and Structure is a good resource for the history and study of BASL
I’m American and white, as well as hearing, so I can’t speak for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing communities that use any of these, but the best place to start is by immersing yourself in the culture.
That’s right! Sign Language isn’t just a language, so the history behind it is just as important as knowing the right shapes to make your hands.
Like I said, I can’t speak for everyone who uses a Sign Language, but if you do, please add onto this post! The more information, the better!

Sign languages unite us!
Tumblr media
The International Day of Sign Languages is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. During the 2023 celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages, the world will once again highlight the unity generated by our sign languages. Deaf communities, governments and civil society organizations maintain their collective efforts - hand in hand - in fostering, promoting and recognizing national sign languages as part of their countries’ vibrant and diverse linguistic landscapes.

It's International Day of Sign Languages, so it's time to share my blorbo Miguel! He's deaf and mute*, and actually doesn't start learning ASL until he's 9 (in the AU he survives). <3
*He uses mute as a stronger term to highlight his inability to speak not because of his Deaf identity, but because of the language deprivation he faced due to his trauma (a.k.a. His mutism is trauma-related and a separate condition)

Happy national sign language day in Norway!
Sign languages are fully fledged languages that deserve to be celebrated. They have yet to be recognised as such in several countries, and many people in Deaf communities face structural barriers that make it difficult to access vibrant language communities.
Notice how I wrote "Deaf communities"? That's because deafness is more than a condition. It is also communities with their own rich history, culture, and language. Access to language and culture is very important for all people, but in this case is often hindered by audism. Audism is discrimination of deafness or Deaf culture, for example through overt discrimination and/or treating it as inferior to hearing language and culture.
Examples of audism include structural barriers to learn signed languages, like underfunding education or deciding deaf children should focus on learning oral languages. Another example is trying to "fix" deafness through medicine or speech training, undermining Deaf culture. This also doesn't take into account that technology like cochlear implants (CI) doesn't work for everyone, and leaves Deaf people doing invisible labor to conform to hearing norms.
Sign languages, Deaf communities, and specific political issues are not universal. I recommend reading up on what the situation is like in your country! Read accounts from Deaf people and be open to new perspectives on hearing bias, disability, language learning, and language rights.
