I started T and my girlfriend did my first shot for me. We are both trans and in love. It was such a special moment to me on many levels and layers. It was special to her too. Seeing her focus and concentration in making sure to do it right, her affirmations that I was being brave, and the fact she put on Is It Cold In The Water by SOPHIE just made it such a lovely experience. She means so much to me. This beautiful girl made this experience special for me. I’m so lucky.

One tip I learned as a young kid that I use now for my IM injections is to relax the muscle I'm injecting into make it as painless as possible. The idea behind this is that when your muscles are less tense (i.e., when it is relaxed), the needle will have an easier time penetrating into it to administer medicine.

Here's how I, personally, relax my muscles for injection:

Put on music or a YouTube video that piques my interest

Make sure I am focused on exactly what I'm doing to ease my anxiety; basically, being intentional and mindful

Sit myself down since I inject into the thigh, then slightly position my foot further than I normally would when I sit

Jiggle my thigh a bit before prepping it with an alcohol wipe (I don't know why, but this helps me so much)

Take a deep breath before injection, making sure the injection needle is at a 90° angle

Look away! (helps because I have very shaky hands that get worse when I look at what Im doing. Do check on your progress as you push the plunger down, but I find I don't have to look to know now)

This will be different than if you do SQ injections, so this is geared toward folks who are doing IM. These tips are things I find, personally, to be helpful, and so I implore anybody reading to realistically explore if it would work for yourself.

I do not love when the needle goes into my thigh like a rust knife lovingly slipped into an overstuffed garbage bag; nor do I love the feeling of puncturing a cling-wrap membrane 3/4" beneath the surface of my skin.

It is necessary, yes; but necessity is not love. It is an unpleasant task that lingers like cleaning fluid's putrid floral perfume.

reminder: if you're getting an intramuscular injection (e.g. a covid booster or flu shot) and you're above 200 lbs with estrogen-based body fat distribution or 260 lbs with testosterone-based body fat distribution, you should be requesting a 1.5-inch/38mm needle. you might want to print out this sheet and bring it with you, because I have had pharmacy employees blithely tell me the 1-inch needle is fine for everyone, and I find a clear directive from the CDC just makes life a little easier.

after recently gaining access to my medical records, i am mystified to discover that instead of recording my regular t-shot as "sustanon injection, intramuscular" (as is standard), the doctor i saw last week chose to record it as "problem: gender. history: ongoing."
