The fun thing about long running series is that you can trace a character's narrative evolution in real time.
The Law we saw pre-timeskip clearly aimed for One Piece.
Unless it was an elaborate lie to his crewmates (which I guess is the in-series explanation at the moment), it's safe to assume that his D lineage and self assigned suicidal mission didn't exist as a concept back then.

While drawing, I assumed Kidd would become important, but I didn't think LAW would move forward like that. So it's youu?? 😱
Weekly serialization, it's a Wonderland.
The reason weekly serialization is being called a Wonderland is because the authors and editors have to constantly modify a story to create heavy cliffhangers for each chapter to hold the reader's attention. And this leads to the entire story taking unexpected turns.
Based on that, I have a theory: Law's introduction in Punk Hazard wasn't planned at all.
It may sound far fetched for how integral Law is to Punk Hazard's plot. But it's not an uncommon event, and not just in One piece. Editors often suggest heavy changes to accommodate strong cliffhangers and quick surprises. Eleven supernova were created because early Shabondy lacked in oomph, and I think Law possibly appeared in Punk Hazard for the same reason.
Even without Law, the straw hats would've visited Dressrosa to save Kanjurou, Zou to reunite with Raizo, and Wano to escort their new friends back home. Law just happened to have something going on in all of these places.
I think both Law and Kidd's post timeskip debut was planned to be in Wano arc. Law's competitive dynamic with Kidd and Luffy in Wano is more consistent with Shabondy than anything that came before.

Doflamingo was initially one of Kaido's strongest allies to be defeated within Wano country (confirmed in volume 98 SBS). It means Dressrosa was entirely different from what we got, while Wano had a pretty well-developed concept.
Considering the similarities in their Jolly Roger, Oda may have planned Law to be Doflamingo's ex-subordinate with a complicated history ever since he created him, keeping his and Doflamingo's conflict reserved for Wano. But Law was popular, resourceful and the story needed a boost after a monotonous Fishman Island arc. Thus, Law got his early screentime that snowballed into a dramatic Dressrosa arc.
Tldr, I think this is how it happened: During the early phase of their creation, Oda decides that Kidd and Law would return and fight alongside Luffy in Wano, Kidd significantly more important than Law -> Punk hazard is written to introduce the samurais -> The story becomes somewhat 'bland' and editor pesters Oda to bring Law early -> Law appears and proposes an alliance, so the plot is now directly chained to Wano -> Oda realizes ope ope makes a good device to explain Imu's immortality -> Oda makes Law a D as he's now connected to endgame plot -> Law's relevance dramatically increases beyond Dressrosa and possibly even Wano.

Even if the theory above is wrong, it's a fact that Law was not a part of the bigger picture but became unexpectedly relevant. To work with him long term, Oda had to refine and change the smaller details of his personality slowly as the story progressed; such as his honesty and the tendency to throw his life away.
When Law roped straw hats into his revenge scheme, he didn't actually plan to confront Kaido. But deep down he wanted them to leave Dressrosa safe and unharmed. Law in the final correction looks surprised by Sanji's observation, while in the draft, he appears more certain about his hidden motives. Maybe he wasn't supposed to be so honest. I guess, by the time Oda actually reached the scene, the shadiness didn't suit his personality anymore.
In a way, Wano Law was the best written Law. His personality was fully ironed out, not just the revived rivalry with Luffy-Kidd but also a reluctance to be nice while time and time proving it's mostly just talks. It's a mix of his earlier personality traits and the later decided improvisations, bridged together by his 'tsundere' nature.

Does it all mean Law's relevance was just a service, and wasn't pivotal to Luffy's development? Not really. Because of Law, Luffy's intention behind going after Kaido wasn't just to save a country but to take steps towards becoming the pirate king. Law helped Luffy to become a better leader, a far more suitable candidate for the final race.
Edit: Here's a bit of extension of this theory.

ether as severance + “the courtship of kier and imogene” (relationship parallels)

(just so we’re clear, while the kier-imogene dynamic is clearly paralleled with helena and mark, it is also reiterated in cobel and mark, dr mauer and gemma, and even burt and irving to some extent; season 2 has also made it a point to show us that helena and cobel are both victims in their own ways while being perpetrators. it is not a black and white situation and misogyny will get you blocked.)

It's still interesting that TBoB called more attention to Stan's control over his mindscape (And if you go with the interpretation that the lost pages are partial truths that are heavily influenced by Bill, then he's the one insisting that only someone with training should be able to have that much control over the mind.)

Meanwhile we have a memory!Stan. Someone who apparently knows too much and is rather aware for being a simple memory.

From the Wheel of Shame, we know Bill was able dig up all kinds of dirt on Stan but... that wasn't why he was there in the first place, was it?
Bill couldn't find the code immediately despite a memory of Stan opening the safe being a few hours old at most and decided to have Mabel try find it for him (The original concept of the ep had it far more hidden but this was likely cut because of time constraints)

Ford did experiments on Stan's mind which likely meant using Project Mentem and actually looking around his mindscape, and his only reaction was to comment on his jokes-- despite what little we the audience know being enough to render us sobbing wrecks
(yes I refuse to shut up about this part cos the book's intro is extremely underrated)

Stan was able to replace his memories of Ford with the swingset instead and managed to hide Ford in his Bar Mitzvah memory. And that's not even mentioning the lack of visible Portal and Stan o' War which noticeably show up in Ford's dreamscape (the broken swingset manifesting anyway pains me tho)

He subconsciously has misdirects for his secrets that are both silly and manages to disturb everyone too
And while Bill-as-Soos being bored by the vending machine memory is a joke that's basically the crew's way of going "hey remember the thing way back in the first ep that's going to show up in the next one?" and in-universe appears to be Stan slipping up, it's interesting that they had Stan input the wrong code when it's consistent literally every other time its inputted (especially when it shows up correctly in the very next episode)
It's even possible that the safe code that Bill found could have been a misdirect too but we'll never know since the safe got blown open by dynamite.

Stan was able to buy time by making his mind blank despite being genuinely terrified when Bill enters his mind (to the point that he breaks character and uses his own voice to yell), and could conjure up his living room (in colour opposed to his mind's regular greyscale) to make sure Bill didn't have enough room to flee, slamming the door in his face before the effects of the memory gun kicked in.
(EDIT: Random door analysis here)

And maybe the twins eventually told him that Bill had already been inside his mind after their W3 reunion, but all we know was that his conscious self was left in the dark for ages and wasn't really aware of Bill until Weirdmageddon.

TBoB showing McGucket's dreamscape also brings up the idea of the effects of the memory gun manifesting differently to each person. To Stan's mindscape, the memory wipe manifests as blue flames which immediately brings to mind Bill's powers but it's a far lighter shade (maybe to more closely match the memory gun and its eventual fade to white?)
The end of TBoB and the website poem also firmly reminds us about Stan's connection to fire but there's also the question if Stan himself is actually aware of it...
#but also j3 having ford read dipper's entries post dd&md but not having him know about the kids' encounters with bill is so kashdskahd#cos that implies he immediately skipped the pages that mentioned stan 😭and didn't read mabel's entries#oh for him to actually react to dipper's observations about stan's mindscape....#stan pines#stanley pines#bill cipher#gravity falls#gf meta#yes of course my brain is still going ' same coin theory ooooo' at this#cos i doubt that j1 has any mention of the mindscape and it's not like stan would have studied this stuff#imagine iconic hippy hater actually mediating on purpose#i'm still waving my arms about stan potentially seeing the reader's version of tbob tho#but even if that ain't the case bill having a breakdown from him reading him like a book is still iconic#dunno if this is coherent and i'm pretty sure all this stuff is things most folks know but idk some people didn't read the journal#some folks don't know about the poem!!!! truly the biggest tragedy

God, if it WAS a timeloop, if Arcane Jayce has been experiencing version after version of The Horrors of not stopping Hextech, if him shooting Viktor isn't "killing" it's the final act of attempt after attempt after attempt at SAVING HIM I will walk of a ledge I swear, it's all coming together, I am a "Jayce was trapped in a time loop" truther now, I'm losing my damn mind. There is no way Jayce killed his partner unless another Viktor told him to do it or he has tried so many times over and seen the consequences of not doing so that he's completely broken, or he just knows from all those other versions that this is not Viktor or it's the only way to actually save Viktor... anyway I'm officially chewing glass and losing my mind I take back every version of "that is not Jayce" I am now a "That IS Jayce several decades of trauma later, trauma caused by trying over and over to save the world and save Viktor" I think we're going to be repaid for all of our "The goodbye was too brief" or "There was no emotion when Jayce killed Viktor" with an ENTIRE SEQUENCE that is just all the emotions Jayce has been pouring into trying to fix all of this any other way
Tune in next week at the end of my psychological breakdown to see if I was right or just ridiculous!

I'd like to propose a dark horse candidate for the most interesting line in The Book of Bill. And it's this near-unreadable, seemingly one-off joke from the "Skin" page:
[ID: tiny text reading: "Help! This is not Bill Cipher. My name is Grebley Hemberdreck of Zimtrex 5. I'm one of thousands of beings Bill has devoured over trillions of years whose souls are now trapped inside him. You have to free me! It's horrible in here. He just keeps playing the song "Good Vibrations" by Marky Mark on an endless loop. Please, please, this is not a joke! The Zimtrexians were once a proud and mighty people, but now our spirits long for release from this..." End ID.]
Okay, so Bill devours souls who then live out a horrible existence inside him. That's just some typical and expected Bill behavior, right? Nothing to be shocked by? Maybe not, but one thing jumps out at me... and of all things, it's the way that Bill keeps playing that Beach Boys parody (correction provided by @fexalted: no, not in fact a Smiley Smile parody, but a real song!) on loop.
Because in The Book of Bill, there's a recurring motif of characters playing music for a very specific reason: to repel an unwanted presence inside their head. This is what Elias Inkwell, and later Ford, did with the "It's A Small World" parody — they tried to keep Bill out of their brains. Or, metaphorically... to drown out his voice.
[ID: a Journal 3 page with a cassette taped inside. It's titled: "The World Is Small Ever After for Always." Ford writes: "If it's war you want, it's war you'll get! If you want to torture me? I'll torture you back!" End ID.]
That doesn't necessarily mean that Bill finds the voices of devoured souls to be troubling, let alone downright haunting, does it? Well... not quite on its own. But there's a "color" code on the page about TV static that says a lot:
[ID: a code consisting of colorful squares, translated to letters that spell out: "he never sleeps he never dreams but somehow still he hears their screams." End ID] (screenshot courtesy of @fexiled)
The context of the page implies these "screams" come to Bill especially when he listens to TV static, and the broader context of the book implies that these are the screams of his destroyed home dimension, Euclydia. Therefore, not necessarily those of the souls he devoured, from Zimtrex 5 and possibly other dimensions.
Except... do those two things really have to be mutually exclusive?
The beings that Bill devoured were accumulated over "trillions" of years, plural, according to Grebley. In Weirdmageddon 1, Bill claims to have resided in the Nightmare Realm for precisely "one trillion" years. So the "devouring" habit probably extends back even further than his time in the Nightmare Realm...
Enter @acetyzias, pointing out a very conspicuous word — and one of the only uncensored words — from Bill's description of destroying his home dimension:
[ID: the word "mandibles". End ID.]
Oh, and how does Bill describe the "monster" that destroyed his home to Ford, when Ford asks about revenge?
[ID: Journal excerpt reading: "Sixer, it would eat you alive." End ID.]
For a long time, Bill's destruction of his home has been associated with fire, even when the story's told by Bill himself. But through the way the book characterizes Bill's guilt — and characterizes how the consequences of what he's done remain lurking deep inside him — I think The Book of Bill lays out the hints for another motif: devouring.
And, well, when it comes to how Bill destroys things... it wouldn't be without precedent.
[ID: screenshot of Bill in Weirdmageddon 3, taking a bite out of the Earth. End ID.]

Pretty much as soon as the first Chapter of Deltarune came out, people were pointing out how the ending theme 'Don't Forget' came off as very... double meaning-y. It was ambiguous in a way that it could come off as very comforting and heartfelt or very creepy and threatening depending on how you interpret it.
My prediction (based on just, General Vibes of the kind of narrative I think Toby Fox wants to make) has always been is that both the heartwarming and sinister meanings of the song are True and present in the game. There's gonna be some Stuff happening in the game that will make the lyrics of this song come off as very sinister, but also stuff that make it seem like an honest heartfelt song about friends sticking together.
And I think that's pretty much what's been going on, especially with Chapter 4.
Cause while we already had the light running low, and places that we know turning into fantasy and light quite literally shining in our SOUL, the ending of Chapter 4 brought up one very important piece of lyric that wasn't really accounted for before.
The promise in our hearts.
So "Don't Forget" can be interpreted as a song from the Evil Phone Voice and/or the Knight (it's probably Carol Holiday, but I don't wanna make definitive statements before the whole story is concluded cause Toby might have one or more narrative curveballs up his dog-sleeve) reminding Kris that no matter where they are, even in the depths of the Dark Worlds they are bound by whatever Promise they made to follow Evil Phone Voice's plans.
"Don't forget, I'm with you in the dark" would be especially chilling if Carol is the Roaring Knight (or that it's Dess, 'the promise in our hearts' meaning they are both bound by a promise to Carol). It would be basically the Knight singing "hey you better not try anything funny or go off-script because I can and WILL kick your ass".
But, well... this isn't necessarily the only 'Promise' in this game. There are less 'official' and less sinister promises as well. Like Susie's promise to decorate Ralsei's room, and Ralsei's promise to be more honest with Susie and, well...
"Don't Forget" could also easily be about the promises of friendship between the Three Heroes, and their promises to try and prevent whatever terrible fate the Prophecy has given them, and to be there for each other in the Dark.
Especially when you consider the context for the scene where 'the light inside your SOUL' became very literal
was a very heartfelt scene of the friendship and caring both Susie and Ralsei hold for Kris.
In a way, the two interpretations of 'Don't Forget' kinda represent Kris' dilemma at the end of Chapter 4. They're essentially hearing "don't forget, I'm with you in the dark" from both Susie and the Evil Phone Voice.

Aite let’s do this. Here’s my thoughts on the Jedi’s Attachment rule and why it exists:
Attachment and love/affection are two very different things. You can be loving and affectionate without being attached to someone.
The same way, letting go doesn’t mean forgetting. It’s accepting the way things are and that death and loss are a natural part of life. You can’t fight what’s natural. It also doesn’t mean to sit back and just accept things as they are, or why would Jedi fight to protect? To change things and save people?
Love is knowing to put the many over the few. If someone you love is in danger, but there’s also a boatload of civilians, it’s going for the civilians, even if you hate them, despite wanting to save the other. ie. Letting go of your feelings. Not being attached.
So why this rule is such a big deal.
For a Jedi, being *attached* poses a much bigger problem than for the average person (looking at you Anakin Skywalker.) If a normal person can go to extremes either as a result of losing someone or wanting to protect them, think of what a Jedi, who feels things more deeply because of the Force, could do if they can’t let go.
The important thing is Jedi don’t say ‘don’t love.’ They don’t say ‘feel nothing.’ In fact you often hear Obi-wan and others say to trust feelings, instincts and refer to each other affectionately.
Anakin: You’re like a father to me.
Obi-Wan: Then why don’t you *listen.*
(Episode II. Not a reprimand for calling him father-like but asking if that’s how he feels, why doesn’t Anakin listen like a son should.)
What they *do* say is don’t get carried away in positive or negative feelings, as both can lead to impulsive actions with long term consequences. It’s a concept that follows the lines of mindfulness and just being *aware* that they have so much power, they can’t afford to be reckless. Because the damage *will* be long lasting.
They say don’t love someone so much that you’ll do anything for them. They say don’t be *possessive.* Because that’s a *very* dangerous place to go for a normal person, let alone a super powerful being who could leave *chaos* behind. Attachment is refusing to let go. Stopping someone from doing what they love because you’re scared. Love is trusting and accepting things can’t/will change even if you don’t like it, and accepting that when there’s nothing you can do without breaking your moral code.
Jedi grieve. They feel loss. They get angry. They *love.* They just don’t let those feelings overwhelm them to the point of irrationality, accepting, understanding, and releasing them because they’ll do no good in the long run. If emotion overwhelms the brain, the logical part shuts down, and we’ve all seen what force fuelled temper/grief can do.
‘Kanan and Ezra don’t follow the rule.’
On the contrary.
You see Kanan learn to let go of his grief and *attachment* which has been holding him back all this time. In doing so he becomes a Knight and Master. He loves Hera, yes, but he loves unconditionally. Not possessively. He’s fine with Hera going on dangerous missions and accepts that there will be times she’s hurt. That there’s always a possibility she might not come back and he’s gonna have to live with that. He doesn’t try to stop her. He doesn’t fall into a rage if she gets hurt. He accepts it, pain, rage, grief and all, but lets it go so he doesn’t become fearful to the point he won’t let *her* go. He accepts Hera loves the Rebellion and compromises even if he doesn’t like it. Love. Nothing wrong with that in the Jedi Order.
In contrast you have Anakin. When Padmé is in danger he will drop *everything* to go to her, including putting his men and padawan in unnecessary danger to do so. You see his jealousy when Clovis is around. His lack of faith in Padmé despite her assurances. How he won’t back down even if it scares or disturbs her. You see how he *refuses* to take any chances at all with her health to the point of breaking his moral code. This isn’t love anymore. This is attachment, possession. This is what the Jedi forbid.
You see Ezra struggle with letting Sabine go on a dangerous mission and Kanan teaching him that he has to accept the danger, that she might not come back. and how to do it. Telling him to respect her abilities, what she wants to do, and not loving her to the point of stifling her. This is what letting go is. This is what the Jedi teach.
Ezra has to learn to let go of his own grief and accept Kanan’s death. This is what love without attachment means. This is what the rule is. Feeling it. Accepting it. Then letting the emotions go so they don’t control your actions more than your mind does.
Also, anyone can leave the Jedi Order. If they don’t agree, there’s nothing forcing them to stay. Being a Jedi is a religion, a way of life. You can discuss and debate the details, but you don’t get to pick and choose what parts to follow.
You can be a force wielder without being a Jedi. The privileges the Jedi received were because of their belief and the respect that earned.
But more importantly, you can happily leave the order, and the Jedi will still welcome you to come hang out. To chill with your friends and walk about the Temple, train with others and catch up. It’s a community. You don’t suddenly lose all of that because you decided following the Jedi way wasn’t for you.
#aite let’s see who this reaches?#I don’t want to call it pro Jedi because it’s more like.#this is how George Lucas created the Jedi#and I’m sorry I absolutely *despise* the way new shows have taken this beautiful Order#and rewritten entire aspects of it just so they can make Anakin look good#this isn’t even a theory. look at what Lucas says about the Jedi and Anakin vs what Filoni keeps saying about Anakin being the best Jedi#and how clearly this plays with Ahsoka#and how he shows Dooku and the Jedi in Tales of the Jedi#vs what was previous canon#aaaanyway. Tags!#Jedi#jedi culture#jedi order#anakin Skywalker#padme amidala#obi wan kenobi#kanan jarrus#ezra bridger#Star Wars#star wars meta#call me biased but loving without being attached is such a core part of my own faith#it’s something I’ve grown up around and just makes sense to me#so here’s my expansion on why the Jedi might have it ^^
