I still can’t believe there was discourse about if Zuko and Katara represent Yin and Yang… can we be serious please?

Yes, I know that Yin and Yang were used as a comparison to the moon and ocean spirits, Tui and La, in universe, but let’s do some critical analysis here for a second.

The writers included a real Taoist philosophy that is universally known as cosmic, opposing forces being interconnected and heavily associated with dichotomies such as sun/moon, day/night, fire/water in a show with elemental bending and they introduced it at end of the first season where the conflict is mostly defined by characters associated with fire/the sun on opposite sides of a war to the characters associated with water/the moon. I need us to be SO serious right now, if they didn’t want Zuko and Katara to represent Yin and Yang, they shouldn’t have written this in??? Like, they literally could not get more heavy handed with the symbolism.

And it doesn’t stop there. Zuko, from his own mouth, says the line “you rise with the moon, I rise with the sun” in the exact same place where the spirits compared to yin and yang (again, A REAL PHILOSOPHY WITH EMPHASIS ON THE SUN AND THE MOON) are swimming around each other.

Like, if you want to say that yin and yang are associated with completely different things than the sun and the moon in the ATLA universe then apparently we gotta break that news to every single person in that world??? Like, yin and yang is obviously a concept in the ATLA world that is known by the characters themselves. Why would Aang need to travel to the spirit realm to gain knowledge about where the ocean and moon spirits are if yin and yang, a philosophy that is known in universe, are associated with the moon and ocean? Wouldn’t he just look at the two koi fish that suspiciously resemble yin and yang and be like “💡! THAT’S THE MOON AND OCEAN SPIRIT!”?? Wouldn’t every water bender in the North know that those damn koi fish are the moon and ocean spirits because of that too??

This is why you can’t tell me that the in universe understanding of yin and yang isn’t the exact same in their world as it is in our world.

“But, pray tell, why would yin and yang be used as comparisons to the moon and ocean then?” Because waterbending is based on tai chi. One of the care principles of tai chi is the yin-yang philosophy. It’s like the gateway element to understand that the rest of the elements in the show are also supposed to embody yin-yang themselves.

A huge theme of the show is the supposed difference and separation of the elements, but the actual harmony and unity of them all. Each element has to be balanced and in turn, balances with the rest of the elements as well, especially their supposed opposing force (fire/water, earth/air). This is introduced in season 1 with Iroh literally telling Zhao that the moon spirit is essential to the Fire Nation as well.

It’s this emphasis on the opposite and contradictory nature of fire and water, sun and moon, that the show itself highlights, while simultaneously having multiple characters say that those things need each other. So unless the Yin-Yang philosophy means something completely different in ATLA, something not “opposing forces that are actually complimentary and perpetuate each other”, then we know what (and who) represents Yin and Yang.

Opposing cosmic forces (Zuko and Katara, who have been on different sides of the war the entirety of season 1, fight on equal terms in the spirit oasis using fire and water; one trying to capture the Avatar, one trying to protect the Avatar; both deuteragonists to Aang, and foils of Azula, mirrored in terms of their positions in the narrative; in universe, matched in strength as Zuko acknowledges at the end of s1) that are actually complementary (Zuko and Katara connect in the crystal catacombs over shared experiences that the other had previously thought not possible, resulting in her offering to heal him using the water from the same damn spirit oasis where they fought for the first time as equals) and interact (book 1 and 2 emphasize Katara’s interactions with Zuko more than any other character from the gaang: he steals her mother’s necklace, he captures her from the group, THAT DAMN SPIRIT OASIS FIGHT, she brings him up to the group and defends his hairstyle (????!????), she offers to help him when Iroh gets struck by Azula’s lightning, she spots him at the tea shop, he gets thrown in the catacombs with her, THEY SOMEHOW FORM AN INTIMATE ENOUGH BOND WHERE SHE OFFERS TO HEAL HIM WITH HER VERY PRECIOUS WATER AND HE LETS HER BE THE FIRST PERSON TO TOUCH HIS SCAR) and perpetuate each other (they literally save each other’s lives multiple times by the end of the show and are willing to die in order to protect the other).

Part of the Yin-Yang philosophy is that Yin is strongest with Yang, and Yang is strongest with Yin. There is a bit of the other in each, hence the symbol. Zuko’s character is marked by change, which water represents in universe. Katara’s arc is about growing into her own power (as a waterbender in book 1 and then as someone who can heal, forgive, and protect in book 2 and 3), which is a tenant of fire. There are multiple lines in the finale from them and from other characters emphasizing how good Zuko and Katara are as a team: Sokka plans all their battle strategies with them as a team, Zuko chooses Katara specifically to face his sister with him, she wholeheartedly believes that they can do it together, that they are stronger and better as a team and it culminates in the end of their arcs because they are both needed to take Azula down.

I actually can’t believe I typed all this out because people are so blinded by ship wars they can’t acknowledge what the writers were putting down (very bluntly by the way, none of this is subtle, like at all). Zutara as a ship aside, the writers clearly wanted them (as individual characters and their dynamic) to be the physical representations of Yin and Yang.

Thinking about Rose Tyler again but specifically from a working class perspective. Like her whole rant about how she can’t just go back to work and live a monotonous life after being away and traveling with the doctor is so relatable. i watched in the autumn of 2024 when i was getting to know Ateez and Kpop Idol culture and all the side content that I had no idea was so numerous or varied all at the same time, so it was with some shock that I realized they made these professional dancers, who are reputed to be expensively trained, actually wrestle and run at full blast (with enough effort to take wipe out tumbles).

I have it on good authority that dancers are actually not good at sports, most of the time. This doesn't apply to my boy Jeong Yunho of Ateez, because he is good at everything, and perfect for everything. Thanks for letting me relive the experience after my bias-discovery. What I thought when I saw this without much knowledge of the group was, That's really weird that a kid who made it all the way to debuting as an Idol turned out to be so gifted as a ssireum athlete. Now I'm like, Oh so that's yet another thing he's perfectly suited for. Okay. Sure.

He's the biggest boy on the field, overall, for one thing. He manages to be both tall and thin and extremely broad in the shoulders but also with beautiful dancer lines in his body. Oh and pretty in the face but, you know, they're all pretty in the face. (My private hope for all these idols at this weird indoor sports event for arts & showbiz people is that it functions a bit like the actual Olympics does for Olympians - that they all get their freak on and fuck like bunnies (allegedly)).

The header describes Ateez as having Overwhelming Physiques, but actually the only body they're really talking about is Yunho's. And this isn't just in comparison to the other Idols participating either. This is the second time I've seen a professional sportscaster and former athlete in the sport take a look at Yunho and go, Why isn't that boy in my sport? Look at him!! (The other time was during June 2025 when he threw the first pitch for his favorite baseball team).

This gentleman, Mr Lee Taehyun is a former, actual, real life, 씨름 Ssireum (wrestling, traditional Korean variety) champion who actually really works as a sportcaster for that asport after his retirement. What he's saying here is: As soon as I saw Athlete Jeong Yunho, I coveted him (for the sport). (Well maybe also for himself, but like, coveting Yunho in that way is both universal and common. Just ask Song Mingi and Jung Wooyoung.)

There's a dreamy rom-com edit of the training that these dancer boys received from a former Ssireum champion in the techniques for Korean Traditional Wrestling. This dude just got punched right in the chest by Yunho's gigantically broad shoulders and is coughing. But he's so happy. Baby Yunho is just happy all the time anyway, but he's especially happy because a) he did good and b) he encountered someone who is actually even bigger than he is. (Our boy is a giant, and this Mr. Lee is a goddamn BEHEMOTH if he can make Yunho look so wee.)

It was hilarious to see Yunho when he was still mostly Boy Yunho, knowing what he looks like as the Idol Transformation Complete version as of June 2025, and the reactions that people gave him on this program. The words by his side are 떠억 and 쫘악 and the equivalents I can think of in English are Ooh! Ahh! or perhaps Kapaw! Thwak! And what they're talking about is the impact of how huge his shoulders look. The actual commentary over this shot was, "Look at those shoulders."

You can see Baby Yunho about to dominate the shit out this Idol Dongheon of Verivery (I looked him up for this in particular but haven't listened to the songs) while Baby Yeosang takes this very seriously from the background. The green and red font subtitle says: "THE PERFECT HARMOMY OF OVERWHELMING STRENGTH AND FULL BODY CONTACT TECHNIQUE" while those playing the sportscaster role for this broadcast praise Yunho even further: He isn't merely just physically strong!

The above shot is Yunho being extremely determined to win the upcoming bout, and looking plenty scary.

But immediately after he's completely flattened poor Dongheon into the sand, Yunho smiles sweetly at him like this as they run towards each other for a conciliatory/ congratulatory hug.

Dongheon says, loud enough for the editors to hear, "Oh, you're too strong! ㅜㅜ!" as Yunho lifts him off the ground.

But then Yunho loses, which means Yeosang has to save the day. Look at San, Wooyoung and especially HongJoong freaking out at the unexpected defeat of their most athletically accomplished member. Yeosang is always slow to react to begin with, but he can't even think because it's now up to him.

And he does it! Yeosang DID IT! is what the subtitle says, and Yeosang is so happy his feet literally don't touch the ground for several seconds.

So cute!!

In the post game interview, Yunho says that this experience made him much more interested in the sport of ssireum. I mean, I would too, if I went to my first session to learn how to do it and the former champion immediately was like, Kid, you need to go pro!

So if he hadn't been an idol, I guess Yunho would've been fought over by one or other sports coach at his high school lol.

Hi, Xaller here! I've been putting off this post for a long time for many reasons, The first reason is moving, and the second: I wanted to post all these sketches in a pack when the new TADC series comes out, and now, finally, I can post these sketches! The first sketch is from November 17, 2023. I really liked the art by ۶ৎ𝓡𝓸𝓶𝓪𝓼𝓱𓂃 with her humanization of Jax and, inspired, I wanted to make this sketch, because this humanization reminded me of Izaya in some way and it seemed like a perfect crossover to me! (if anything, the author herself is not against this comparison) So Izaya is a canon humanization of Jax, I think!😁 Translation: "I really love people!" (Izaya canonically knows different languages, including Russian, so I made such a reference)

Well, and then it all started! It's already a full-fledged crossover! I sketched Ragatha from the second sketch on October 15, 2024, and finished her and Jax today!

The third sketch is already from October 31, 2024. I decided to draw my version of humanization of Caine and Izaya-Jax based on the joke from the 4th episode in the Polish version of the translation + I've long wanted to combine Jax with memes about Bugs Bunny, so I combined all the ideas into one!)

And the last sketch from October 17, 2024 with an attempt to draw my full-fledged vision of the humanization of the main characters. A friend said that Jax here looks like William Afton!🤣 So I think the version with Izaya is still better!😅

In the near future, I also plan to return to the digitaltober and inktober flash mob with my circus-sona, since due to the move I was not able to fully complete it, but now that I have a little more free time and access to a PC (and I wanted to draw some of the tasks on a PC) -- I plan to finally finish the flash mob! So there will be a lot of TADC content! Stay tuned!

Why My OC Sucks

Saw this tag by @hedwigoprah and thought it was a great idea! So, here's why my darling girl Ember Mercar also sucks (affectionate).

Ember "Rook" Mercar ⚔️

1. Impulsive

No surprise here. Ember is a big believer in seizing opportunities when they arise. You might not get another chance. So, she dives into the chaos, she adapts, and she plays it by ear. Sometimes that means scrapping the original plan.

It's one of the biggest points of contention between Ember and the Shadow Dragons - especially Tarquin. He sees her as a loose cannon and a maverick. She sees it as being someone who gets the job done.

Ember would very much agree with Cassandra Pentaghast's "I see what must be done, and I do it. I see no point in running around in circles like a dog chasing its tail." I'm not sure how much Cassandra would endorse Ember's off-the-cuff operations though.

2. Stubborn

Ember's stubbornness can be one of her greatest strengths. But it's also one of the most annoying things about her. Just ask her friends. She digs in her heels. She's obstinate. She will find a hill to fight and die on - and sometimes it's about stupid shit.

She's not quite at the level of sunk cost fallacy as Solas (and she'd throw hands if someone made that comparison) but she can get close. "Rook, what's the first thing you do if you find yourself in a hole?" Varric once told her after they got their asses kicked in a completely avoidable fight. "Stop fucking digging."

3. A gambler's heart

Some of this is just straight up hubris. Ember can be cocky. She knows she's good in a fight, knows she can take down big opponents. And her methods haven't failed her yet. She loves the thrill of doing the impossible.

So, she takes risks. Makes bold moves. She's going to go big or go home, risk it for the biscuit, etc. This applies to combat, Wicked Grace, her romantic pursuits, and everything in between. Ember is audacious, and a bit of a showman (I also attribute this quality to her gladiator days. *Cue Maximus' "Are you not entertained?"*).

Ember would absolutely quote the Thedas equivalent of Admiral Horatio Nelson's "The measure may be thought bold, but I am of the opinion the boldest are the safest." (And she'd ignore her team's exclamations on how ridiculous that sounds. But I think Taash would back her up!)

Biography

Born to a Mexican-born mother and American-born USAF father, Esme was a child of the military and moved around a lot with her family. She was extremely close with her father, despite him not spending a lot of time at home, as she appreciated his time with more passion the less of it they had. She made every second count, as did her father. By comparison, her brother was not as close, and even resented him for not putting the family first. The two were also extremely close with their mother and loved her dearly, enjoying her cooking, her made up games, the creativity she brought to the home. She was a mother without compare, in their eyes, no one ever reaching the pedestal that they had put her on. And Elena adored her children.

When Esme was much older, she came to a decision that she would like to follow in her father's footsteps and become a pilot, however, she didn't want to fly jets or planes. Esme has set her heart on helicopters.

By the time she was 18, Esme had applied to join the US Army and completed the Warrant Officer Flight Program over an 18 month period. Her parents couldn't be prouder, but there was little affection or support from her brother, though he did not make this obvious. In 2017, the battles that would follow the Federation's first attack were some of Esme's first. A few years after that, whilst on leave, she visited her mother and brother in Mexico, just before the Federation attacked and claimed Mexico a part of its dictatorship. It was during this time that Esme had to hide her true occupation, while working to keep her family safe; she intended on escaping Mexico with them, heading towards the border to America where she knew fellow troops were holding the line. However, it was on this journey that they were captured by Federation soldiers, questioned and threatened. Esme refused to talk, unwilling to give in to their demands. It was at this moment that one soldier killed their mother in front of them. Her brother caved, begging them to take them in and that they would fight for the Federation. He gave his sister the grace to keep her secret safe, not revealing that she was with the US Army, or else that would mean her death, too. It was at this point that Esme and her brother were taken in by the Federation and became soldiers; Esme's talents as a pilot were clocked and she unwillingly, silently spent years biding her time for the right moment to escape. Meanwhile, her brother worked his way up through the ranks, gave in to their propaganda, and came to love the Federation. While stationed at a remote POW base, one that her brother was the overseer for, Esme found her opportunity to escape. A rebel attack gave her the opening and Esme stole one of the helicopters with the intent on flying to the nearest US-associated base.

She knew the risk that came with flying an enemy bird into US territory, but it was calculated and one she was willing to take; of course, with the lack of luck that Esme seemed to have, her bird was shot down. In its crash landing, Esme survived, but was injured, a jagged piece of shrapnel stuck in her thigh as well as a broken wrist, other grazes and scratches. She tried to patch herself up as best she could and waited, knowing that her former affiliate would send someone to check out why a singular enemy chopper was flying so haphazardly in enemy territory.

This was her first run in with the Ghosts, Beth (@stargazing-sapphire2's oc) was the one locate her and after a brief conversation, she had gained herself long enough to plead her case to Elias. Of course, there were records of her, records that stated she was AWOL. Given that snippet of truth to her story, Elias allowed her the benefit of the doubt. Not to mention, Esme had good insight a fraction of their enemy, and all information was helpful. It took a while for Esme to find her place, but she was glad to be back with the people she was supposed to have been fighting for from the beginning. She remains loyal to them, fiercely, but experiences a lot of grief over the loss of her brother, who still maintains oversight on many POW camps.

Its more-so that Jax wants to be Pomni's friend, really. He was the one seeking her out for the majority of the episode. We get like two moments in which Pomni chooses to spend time with him specifically

The first is during the stargazing adventure, during which Jax largely leaves Gangle alone and in fact actually starts to question how she feels. He genuinely seems to think that he's helping by being mean to her. During this scene we can see that Pomni genuinely thinks he's funny when he's being real with her like that, and she is capable of clapping back at him when she thinks he'd being full of shit (During the anime adventure, for example, where when Jax is just being an ass to Gangle for no reason she doesn't humor him. She just plays completely straight.) but they genuinely have a realistic convo with good chemistry between them. Its chill.

The second time Pomni seeks Jax out is during the softball game, when she gives Ragatha her turn to bat in favor of talking to Jax. We don't get to see whats said there, but once he gets put back to normal and goes absolutely feral on softboy evil Jax, Pomni fucking laughs. She vibes with his sense of humor, and is even a little embarrassed about it when Ragatha notices.

And Jax wasn't even the worst he's ever been to Gangle in that episode. With her putting him in a fucking maid dress and him insisting that she likes it when he's mean to her, the dynamic seems more equal. It feels more like a playful back and forth where Gangle does get her fuckin licks in when the opportunity presents itself, even though it seemed the dress itself was Zooble's idea and she just had Gangle call the vote.

Honestly, its kind of in Gangle's best interest for Pomni and Jax to hang out. Pomni wouldn't tolerate or participate in senseless bullying, and he seems more than happy to just talk about other shit when she's around. When he's with her, he's leaving Gangle alone. Pomni is honest, so inactively encourages it in Jax.

Ragatha thinks its the other way around. Ragatha sees Jax bringing Gangle up and assumes that he's going to encourage Pomni to be mean and that it'll work. Even more than that, Ragatha thinks that Pomni can only be friends with one of them. She wanted to be friends with Pomni, but she just had so little to say in comparison. She isn't as funny as Jax, she doesn't have his seemingly effortless confidence. She fumbled basically every social interaction she had that episode.

So I guess I do see where she's coming from, but I also have more faith in Pomni as a person. Ragatha has a habit of infantilizing her, she's the newest of the cast, she's itty bitty and fucking adorable, but she's also a grown ass woman who knows who she is and can make her own choices, and Pomni has been shown time and time again to choose kindness. Regardless of her reasoning, its unfair to Pomni for Ragatha to try and strip her of her agency.

Pomni becoming friends with Jax could be good for him, and it'll probably be good for Gangle.

It just... Might not be good for Ragatha, depending on how she chooses to handle herself going forward.

Vi and AU!Silco both sort of ended up in the same place. Their both with a partner that assaulted them (Silco's situation escalated into attempted murder), abandoned them, and then gave them a non-apology for what happened. And now Vi has a drinking problem no one talks about and Silco came to community function (which his kids were participating in) already drinking from his flask, and then he took a flute of even more liquor. They're so depressing in a parent-child duo making the same mistakes unbeknownst to both because they live in different timelines way.

If we’re going to say fat liberation is a cult then we might as well say disability justice, BLM, feminism, etc. Are all cults. A lot of what you described is just oppressed people fighting against oppression through a movement.

Like literally the point of fat liberation is that fat people shouldn’t be treated like subhuman and we should be treated equally and that no one’s health should be used to justify oppression (which is a very similar viewpoint to disability justice). I was watching someone play Undertale for the first time on youtube and the comments were like "I hope the fandom doesnt ruin this for you" Because of how common it is for youtubers to drop Undertale because of the overbearing fandom.

And it got me thinking and I think I know why this happens. Its because the neutral endings arent fun.

If I hadnt known that pacifist was the 'best' route when I first played it and gone for it.........I dont think I would have liked Undertale if I got a neutral route.

Yeah you are told you can replay and get a better ending, but if I had played Undertale and gotten one of the endings thats just a phone call and then was told "replay the whole thing to get a better ending" I wouldnt have done it. I would have felt like I wasted 8 hours.

And I think thats where the toxicity towards new players comes from.

Because even if people dont want to admit it, they know the neutral endings will probably make people go "that was the game everyone hyped up? Thats it?" and think it was ok at best. So people backseat HARD to try and make sure people get the most out of the game.

Because if you went in truly blind to Undertale and got a 'phonecall' ending, why in the world would you work hard for another ending that might just be another phone call. You would only know that the Pacifist ending is really THAT GOOD, if someone tells you.

Undertale is one of my favorite games of all time. But only because I knew to play Pacifist first

see, even the people willing to admit that totk is very flawed usually mention how its the writing thats the problem but the gameplay is great, and while the writing is a big problem ... i also dont think the gameplay is that good, theres some impressive mechanics here and there but they also dont work at all in that game world bc it was simply not made for that ON TOP off somehow both overusing and underusing them- good ideas badly excuted- simply .. insultingly little thought put behind alot of things, sometimes feeling like its intentionally made to point and laugh at you if you cared about botw at all

i am mad about this game on so many levels, as a zelda fan, as a botw fan, as someone interested in game design and developed, as a writer, as an artist etc and it somehow manages to kinda .. piss me off on everything, thats honestly the most impressive thing about this game, game made specifically to piss me off, fuck me in particular game

To be brutally honest I never really liked either of these designs compared to every other Hemitheos we get, I think the really brutal black and red of the Phoinix is weakened by gold accents, but I still am always down for gay vampire surf rock. The Savage version kind of looks like Ultimalius as well if you've played XVI.

^ My favourite detail on this is you can see the parasite's outlines in her robes and in her legs, then right through the eye holes on the mask to wrap around the torso. I'm convinced this version of Hegemone is functionally an ant being piloted by a cordyceps infection.

I'm probably biased by Abyssos being the first raid I was there for day of release but these really are all fantastic. It's also when the story abandons all pretense of not being (at least partly) about family abuse and is loudly using the body horror and shackle motifs to talk about that. It's great. Hephaistos specifically is constantly bulging and twisting in and out of different forms like a highly unstable chimera and the more I look at these the more I notice parts that just should not be there. He's giving everything.

As for the Savage design It's a hard thing to rate as such but my favourite part is the veins that grow down from the eyeholes in his mask like bloody tears.

It's really hard to communicate how huge this nasty tumor crab I zoomed out as far as physically possible in the game engine and subsequently ended up at a goofy angle staring up his nose.

Ephemeral Justice: Themis

Best boy. The double ended lance and second pair of arms are fantastic for this character.

Theos: Athena

In.. almost every final fantasy adventure you're fighting the real villain not at the very end but a little beforehand, the big iconic end boss is often more a metaphorical figure representing everything wrong with that first person's ideals. Athena cut out the middle man and became her own JENOVA.

I do like the moth angel, especially the hollow body full of dubious orbs, but with her eyes closed all the time it gives off the impression of this not even being the true body but some kind of anglerfish lure in the shape of a fairy... which might be true because this exists:

I really really love her twitchy anemone feelers and how the moth body ends up grafted to the rest of it waist down.

Anyway there's the gang I did not specifically intend for this to be design reviews I just wanted to have clear photos because when you actually see them in game there's other things to focus on. In hindsight I can appreciate more the theming of each tier and then the series as a whole, but my only (extremely obvious) observation for now is that every character Athena had a personal hold over is decorated in chains somehow and so I should have seen the Hegemone thing coming lmao. Heph and Aggy are still my favourites I don't think that's changing any time soon. I'm also noticing that Anabaseios is now just old enough for random DF parties to fuck up severely and I find that fun so I'm going to go fight the crab mansion now.
