International Women's Day: Celebrating Women in Islam and the West
International Women's Day (IWD), observed annually on March 8th, is a global celebration of women's achievements and a call for continued progress towards gender equality. This day resonates across cultures, including both Islamic and Western traditions.
From an Islamic Perspective:
Islam emphasizes the dignity and respect due to all people, men and women. The Quran highlights several women as figures of strength and leadership, such as Khadija (RA), the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) first wife, and Mary, the mother of Jesus.
Equality in Reward: Islamic teachings emphasize that piety and good deeds are the true measures of worth in God's eyes, regardless of gender. Both men and women are promised equal reward for righteous actions (Quran 3:195).
Education and Contribution: Islam encourages women to seek knowledge and contribute to society. Khadija (RA) was a successful businesswoman who provided crucial support for the Prophet's (PBUH) mission.
Respect and Compassion: The Quran instructs men to treat their wives with kindness and respect (Quran 4:19). Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is known for his respect towards women, urging his followers to "treat women well" (Hadith narrated by Muslim).
From a Western Perspective:
Western thought has seen significant advancements in women's rights movements. IWD emerged from early 20th-century labor movements in Europe and North America, focusing on issues like voting rights and fair working conditions for women.
Gender Equality: The Western concept of gender equality emphasizes equal opportunities and rights for men and women in all aspects of life, including education, employment, and political participation.
Empowerment and Agency: Western feminism often highlights women's empowerment and agency, encouraging them to challenge traditional gender roles and pursue their goals.
Celebrating Achievements: IWD is a platform to celebrate the achievements of women in various fields, from science and technology to politics and the arts.
Convergence and Shared Values:
Despite their different cultural contexts, both Islamic and Western perspectives on IWD share core values. Both traditions celebrate women's contributions, advocate for fairness and respect, and envision a future where women have the opportunity to thrive.
International Women's Day presents a valuable opportunity to reflect on the progress made towards gender equality and the ongoing challenges. By acknowledging the contributions of women from diverse backgrounds and working together across cultures, we can work towards a more just and equitable world for all.

Islam, Kepemimpinan Perempuan, dan Seksualitas by Neng Dara Affiah and Muslimah yang Diperdebatkan by Kalis Mardiasih
Tumblr media
Back in 2016, I attended a lecture by the first Muslim British Ambassador to Indonesia where he said, “when I first arrived in Indonesia, I did not expect women in hijab riding the motorbikes freely!” From that moment on, I keep on reflecting on how living as a Muslim woman in Indonesia has its perks and downsides.
🥀
These two books are good starters of Islamic Feminism in the Indonesian context. In a world that enables patriarchy to dictate our lives, Muslim women in some Islamophobic countries are facing persecution in the public sphere, and Muslim women in some predominantly Muslim countries face strict Islamic interpretation/rulings. Meanwhile, Muslim women in Indonesia enjoy some privileges such as the freedom to wear a hijab without any unnecessary stares, no mandatory hijab (exc some local regulation), the freedom to roam around freely without a male guardian, etc. However, when it comes to certain aspects such as leadership, gender roles, sexuality, and many others, they’re still subjected to the patriarchal system. These books are a collection of essays covering important issues such as female leaders, polygamy, virginity, myths, Ahmadiya, etc. Neng Dara Affiah, a sociology professor, wrote in a rather academic style by looking in-depth into the history, with references to Islamic Feminism scholars such as Fatima Mernissi, Amina Wadud, etc. (you gotta check their works!). She included her own experiences as a Muslim woman brought up in an Islamic household and as a commissioner of Komnas Perempuan circa 2007-2014.
🥀
Kalis Mardiasih, on the other hand, wrote more creatively that her writings, at least to me, are more accessible to the wider audience (basically what I’ve been looking for lately). Mbak Kalis’s essays have also been published on Mojok website so this book is a compilation of her writings throughout the years, which cover a more recent topics such as halal cosmetics, wallah fuckbois (lol), CURRENT INDONESIAN POLITICS (hate speech!!!), hijabi women who are shamed for taking off their hijab, etc. As an Indonesian Muslim woman, I have seen myself described in some passages and experienced some of the events they described. If you’re also a Muslim Indonesian woman, then I suggest you read these books, too, or check youtube dot com for lectures by Neng Dara Affiah and Mojok website for essays by Kalis Mardiasih. If you’re an Indonesian man, then you HAVE to read them to try walking in our shoes for a bit!!!

"Karena Perempuan Harus Mengerti"... . . . . Wallahua'lam bis showab. Sekedar berbagi saja. . . #iqro' #bacalah #goodreads #perempuan #muslimah #bukubagus #islamicfeminism
