trimax volume 6 random thoughts

chapter 1:

oh, hey, it's the guy from the 98 anime!..... or not?!

i'm not keeping track of this TOO closely, so there may be other instances of this that i missed, but the guy from 98 episode 1 also showed up in trimax chapter 7. it makes me wonder if nightow provided character designs/ideas to the 98 team, or if it's the other way around and he decided to incorporate anime-original characters into the manga. either way: neat!

HAVE I MENTIONED I LOVE MERYL, BY THE WAY.

i love the bits of characterization we've been getting for her. she (and milly) are our tie to humanity, after all

i must say it is nice to have a goofy fight after... all that in volume 5. and before... the rest of volume 6.

chapter 2:

aaaand now we start the next chapter with wolfwood's nightmare/flashback! hurts just a little bit! (the trio IS kinda serving tho ngl... when you have a fashion show at 7 but need to terrorize the orphanage at 6)

^ completely and 100% unironically, they were in love here.

i just... ugh. this is such a vashwood chapter. the absolute trust and fighting together completely seamlessly, they are just. ugh. ughhhhh. this kind of trust just GETS to me.... sorry. i'm normal about them. i'm NORMALLLLLLaauughghghgh

ANYWAY. chekhov's table made me laugh

i am physically restraining myself from going crazy over vw again as i reread this chapter to write this post.

anyway anyway. ww calling himself "nicholas" is cute :)

chapter 3:

legato continues to be fascinating to me. i'm observing him like a bug in a jar. which is appropriate, considering...

WHEN I CALLED HIM A BAGWORM IN THAT ONE POST I WAS JOKINGGGGG I WAS JOKING!!! THIS MADE ME LAUGH FOR LIKE 10 MINUTES STRAIGHT WHY DID SHE HANG HIM FROM THE CEILINGGGG IT'S SO FUNNY

this is actually making me fucking cry.

...i got so distracted laughing at bagworm legato that i almost forgot to say literally anything else about the chapter, but anything else i have to say mostly boils down to "wow, legato is such a freak (affectionate)"

also, whenever something that was in tristamp is brought up i feel like the leonardo dicaprio pointing meme. like "oh hey, i know this!" going into this manga with prior knowledge from stampede is... an interesting experience. all that being said, i can't WAIT to see more of the manga version of double fang. oh nightow we're really in it now

chapter 4:

oh, finally, FINALLY!!! last volume i asked where the knives nuance was and now we're FINALLY getting some knuance, thank god. seeing knives react to just how badly humans treat plants is SO effective. and we're not even up to the juicy part yet. it makes me want to eat glass.

speaking of eating glass.

i thought something like this might've been the case, but still... this hurts to read.

i want to eat glass!!!! fuck!!! this reveal is so insane, it's like monkey's paw of "this is a way knives can be defeated, but by the same method, vash is closer to death than knives is." WE don't want vash to die, and neither does knives, and this chapter is the first (and possibly the only, idk) time the reader's feelings and knives's feelings are... well, aligned. at least in a sense.

chapter 5:

this chapter is really something, because it starts off almost seeming like another lighthearted "we're in a random town fighting a goofy enemy of the month" romp much like the early chapters were, heck like chapter 1 of this very volume. but it's just wearing the skin of that. which is, y'know. the thesis of this entire chapter. smiling to hide the pain and all that.

i don't think i can really... articulate anything of substance. the chapter just kind of... speaks for itself, i think.

although i DID laugh at ww trying to enjoy his noodles and failing, and also the phrase "needle-noggin-isms." thanks for providing some levity, we actually really do need it.

chapter 6:

ohhh boy we are REALLY in it now!!

i enjoy seeing knives ponder like this. legs crossed, arm slung over his face... i don't know. maybe it's because i myself sometimes lounge in this pose.

what exactly is he thinking about, i wonder. that in awakening/forcing vash to use his powers, he unintentionally pushed him closer to death? maybe? i don't know. either way it's very on-the-nose for what their relationship has been like.

and then of course we cut to this shot of vash, looking in a mirror created by knives's slice

this shot is making me think a lot and i'm reading too much into it, but- obviously the reflection puts vash's beauty mark on the opposite side, so there's the knives resemblance, so also, i suppose vash must see knives every time he looks in the mirror, right? also vash looking at his reflection featuring his own black hair- which we're all still thinking about... i dont know. i dont even know if this is anything LOL. i feel like i have the dots but i'm failing to articulate the connection. anyway

this made me laugh. thanks for the levity again, wolfwood :)

BECAUSE WE'RE GONNA NEED ALL THE COMIC RELIEF WE CAN GET, BABY!!!

maybe i'm just insane for this because it's Generic Party Imagery but the specific combination of rem flashback + party popper + funny glasses makes me think of the similar scene in 98 when the seeds crew celebrates finding planet gunsmoke. like is this another instance of nightow nabbing stuff from 98 or am i just making things up.

the twins are so cute and baby knives smiles so much, i want to microwave myself.

knives wants to believe in humanity. man. MAN!!!!!

what comes next... i'm absolutely carrying my prior stampede knowledge into this, but fuck, man. fuck. even then, i know that stampede didn't show everything, so i don't even fully know what to expect. which is fun! but i can't believe the volume ends right in the middle of the flashback, MAN!!!

Totally cheating and writing this post early. IT'S THE ONLY WAY.

Stream-of-consciousness thoughts for TriMax Vol. 6, Chapters 5-6 below.

Chapter 5: Colorless Expression

Vash's careless pose with a cheerful smile is a very harsh contrast to the revelation at the end of the last chapter.

I wonder who got that photo of July going up. Also, shout out to the tiny, tiny headshot of Vash in the newspaper.

Never underestimate the cruelty potential of little old ladies. Especially if they think they have nothing to lose.

Is Vash going to church??

LOL, not if this kid has anything to say about it.

I dunno. I think Meryl might be onto something. Or maybe just noticing it for the first time. Maybe some of both.

Vash looks like he's praying. Or falling asleep.

Aaand there's tired Vash looking like Knives. Ugh, someone take care of him.

Very rude of them to bring guns into the house of God AND to then suggest murdering someone with them right then and there.

I read this guy's name wrong so from now on he's Justin Baby.

Never trust a Haliburton. They're always up to something.

Meanwhile, Wolfwood is in noodle bliss. I'm sure that's gonna last and he's gonna get to enjoy the whole bowl undisturbed.

Yep, he got a whole three panels before a cacophony of news about Vash's latest shenanigans interrupted his meal. You can see his peace and quiet melt out of his being.

Vash was already feeling pretty freaking depressed over all he's done. That's why he went to the church in the first place. This is not helping.

Wait, has Vash been drinking?? Buddy, don't you know alcohol's a downer? It's not gonna help with the depression. Even Wolfwood thinks this is a bad idea. Looks like he still has the moves, though.

Ohhhh, babygirl doesn't look so good.

Wolfwood and the girls know what's up, and Wolfwood in particular looks less than thrilled about it. First his soup, then sloppy mess Vash, and now his boss.

Vash, babygirl, what's going on in that spiky head of yours right now??

Wolfwood has clearly had enough of this morning's shit.

There's so much going on on this page, with characters overlapping without any panel breaks even though they're clearly not realistically positioned around Wolfwood. It's like our priest man is drowning in them. And then there's Vash, alone in the lower left corner, the last place you're likely to look when reading manga, and the only one set out from everyone else. ;_;

"Needle-noggin-isms." Heh.

Dude, this guy has Mad Max speakers.

Drunk or not, Vash still has mad skills.

He burned some of his power to catch that bullet. That's... he's really not in a good mental place, is he.

Meryl just goes into a full-on panic at the sight of it. Can't say I blame her, all things considered. No one was as up close and personal with that last encounter in the Dragon's Nest as she was.

Uggggghhhhh, Vash knows he's messed up.

Guys, I shoulda stopped three chapters ago. This chapter's depressing AF.

God bless Wolfwood. He's doing his best to protect Vash while abiding by them Needle-noggin-isms.

Milly's just straight up carrying Meryl, isn't she?

Vash, noooooo, this huuuuurts.

He's got too much he's trying to carry, and now he's just lost. Thank God for once he's not alone. He's got people around him right now, and that... that might be enough. Even one person having his back might be enough.

WHICH IS ALL HE'S GETTING APPARENTLY BECAUSE VASH CAN'T BEAR TO WORRY MERYL ANYMORE AND MERYL'S IN NO SHAPE TO DO ANYTHING.

Heh, the kid is trying his best to fight the adults. Good for him.

And Wolfwood, trying his best to lighten the mood. Awkwardly.

Chapter 6: Seeds Voyaging to the Stars, A World Inside A Pod

How DARE you show me their smiling faces after that. How dare. I'm in no mood. D:<

Oh, good. It's Knives. I think.

Ok, I love how in every one of these panels, the dark streak in Knives' hair is somehow hidden. It gets called out once on its own, but when we're looking at Knives' face, it's not there. It just kind of deepens how incredibly important it is.

The games are over. Now Knives has to find a different way to save his brother... and himself. Or risk them both dying in the process.

I wonder what Legato will think of his boss's new look....

I thought Elandira was down with Knives' plan because she had no issues with it for some reason, but now I think she's just here for the chaos and not really much more invested in who wins than Zazie is.

Ooof, Vash catching sight of his reflection. That face looking back at him is always his brother's.

Yeah, Wolfwood's run out of patience for this shit. He might punch Knives in the face if he had the chance right now. This... this is how he shows he cares about Vash's well-being.

Ooohhhh, is Vash getting echoes of what happened there?

Seeing his sister's corpse isn't sitting well for Vash, either.

Hells, even before the fall, we have Vash just floating around by himself. He has a whole-ass happy, non-genocidal brother and a caring surrogate mom, and our introduction to him here is him by himself, touched by nothing, backdropped by the void of space.

Hahahahaha, the boys look so confused.

Interesting that Rem is wearing a silly mask at this awkward birthday party when we were JUST TALKING ABOUT how Vash plasters a fake expression on to try and paint things a brighter color. I'm sure it has no significance whatsoever, especially with Rem awkwardly dodging Vash's question about what's the matter by saying how incredible a year it's been.

OMG BABY KNIVES!!! You can't look at this and tell me Knives didn't adore Rem at least as much as Vash did.

She adores them, too, despite how much she must feel like she's grasping at straws trying to figure out how to take care of them.

I love that every version of Trigun thus far has had a birthday scene for the boys with Rem.

Fishing them out of the plant bulb must have been a task.

Hahahaha, definitely a shortcut. In so many ways.

The boys aren't fooled. I know the boys are hyper-intelligent and all, but even normal kids often pick up on micro-emotions like this.

Ugggghhhhh, they both loved all the people on the ships. THEY BOTH LOVED ALL THE PEOPLE ON THE SHIPS!!!

Their conversation.... They both want to be friends with the humans, even if it takes effort.

Knives, maybe you should lay off some of the war movies.

I like to think they created Plants the way the Quarians created sentient AI in Mass Effect. They were just trying to do something that didn't include making a conscious intelligence, and then something went weird that no one understands, and now Plants.

Blaring space ship alarms are not a preferred wake-up method. Especially when you're on the spaceship.

Is Rem trying to hide the twins from the crew??

Cliffhanger ending?! Booooooo....

Author Bonus Chapter

Uhhhh, ok, I'm just gonna note the kana here...

...isn't exactly a sound effect like all the rest of the kana on this page. This is literally the word for "pants" (ズボン, zubon) repeated several times.

Why they're all shouting "pants" at a pro-wrestling event is beyond me. Maybe 'cause the guys often don't wear pants.

Tiny, tiny Nightow in the audience. You know, I would have never guessed he was into pro wrestling given the IMMENSE AMOUNT OF DRAMATIC POSTURING AND WRESTLING OUTFITS his characters wear all the freaking time.

Gods, I recognize some of those signs. I didn't even like pro wrestling....

"Check my monkey ass directly into smackdown hotel!" LOL

"Ah, this reeks of effort!" Classic Nightow.

LOL, I could see him trying to buy all the figurines for himself. Gotta admit, if someone made a figurine of the main character of something I published, I'd buy it, too.

I will never get over Nightow asking McFarlane to do an "American Check" on the gun. The legacy of my country, folks.

"Please detail this area as it pleases you." Good to know Nightow is paying attention to those small details when he draws. /s

Actually, he did bother to emphasize the need for the ear piercing and the mole, which is good.

Somehow, I don't think he regrets the chain too much.

Hahahahaha, he imagines the place like some sort of evil lair.

Ohhhhh, nooooo. New Jersey?? Gods, this must have been a thing for someone who wasn't very familiar with U.S. geography. This was in 2000, too, apparently, which means (for all you young 'uns) that the internet was notoriously unreliable for looking up stuff like this. This was back in the day when a lot of teachers banned the use of internet sources because it was just assumed they'd be wrong. Assuming your teacher wasn't afraid of the internet entirely because they heard people could find naughty images on it.

They make figurines via DARK RITUALS.

Good to know I'm not inexcusable. I may not have many figurines, but manufacturing processes have always intrigued me.

and in ch 5, we have the conclusion of the battle against Gray and Leonov...so, as always, here are my thoughts and things and whatever translation weirdness I find as I re-read Trigun Maximum vol 3!

(NOTE: I'm reading the Dark Horse [physical] and the Overhaul [online] translations side-by-side)

OKLIKESO. we left off in this room where there's blood on the floor and a mountain of boxes...at the top of which Brad finds...

...Isabel, presumably. but she doesn't come out of the boxes like the other puppets do, so...methinks there's something different about her.

back with Wolfwood, as he's dealing with the last of "Gray" we see these flashes of kids from the orphanage. this used to confuse me, but now I think maybe it's, like...calling back to what all Wolfwood has on the line? idk, it has me thinking back to what he said to Vash in Trigun Maximum vol 1 (quoting the Overhaul here): "Even people who would never fight will pick up a gun if their loved ones are killed."

another instance of an interesting Dark Horse-ism + a pretty significant translation discrepancy!

here's another thing that confused me before! I always thought that gory middle panel was Isabel having gotten fucked up from falling...but then, we see Leonov with Isabel, so that doesn't rly make sense, does it (tbf it's not a close-up of Isabel, so 🤷)? anyway. my assumption came from the fact that Dark Horse's translation completely leaves out the bit (in ch 7 of Trigun Maximum vol 2) about the puppets being made from ppl who were dissected alive.

now that I know that extra-fun little detail this read-through...I think that's what that gory middle panel is about 🫠

and yet Vash still tries to save Leonov. I'm feeling An Emotion :(

oh and here's what makes me think Isabel isn't a puppet - or at least, not like the others:

Leonov has strings on Isabel (or her box) and he never uses her. we never see her move. so...I'm wondering if maybe she died young and Leonov like...tried to preserve her.

(...I wonder if she died before he got the chance...)

I know the translations here are similar, but still. it's interesting to compare. once again, it feels like Dark Horse has Wolfwood being, like...uncharacteristically poetic? why. LET HIM DO HIS SWEARS.

but then the girls are here to save the day!!! Milly's move strikes me as one Vash would pull, too 🤣

Ruby Sunday + her mystery box arc sort of seems like a cross between Rose and Clara and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Or at least, about the seemingly blatant bells reminding me of the two of them.

I'm enjoying her and Millie's performance, and her chemistry with Ncuti, don't get me wrong, but. hm. maybe it's the RTD-isms. maybe it's the seemingly compressed time span and instant closeness without explanation. je ne sais pas.

holding out further judgement until there's more, but I hope. I hope. she's not just Rose and Clara smushed together. I hope she's more. please RTD don't just smush them together to make Ruby.

OMG yess I was right!! I knew it! All thanks to Millie Bobby Brown i watched this interview where she says that British people say candy floss instead of cotton candy, and then when reading ‘don’t you dare fall in love” I read at some point where Ellie says the reader smells like “candy floss and apples” so it got me thinking that maybe you’re British!

Btw I absolutely love your works! It seems that every time I obsess over a character you have a story for them now it’s Ellie and ‘don’t you dare fall in love’ is one of my absolute favorites now!!

i mean, this is pretty obvious since Striker himself makes this very clear in WE. i always HC him with a tragic backstory since his debut. but it is nice to get validation, which leads me to believe that my initial theory is true. his story is about grief, loss, tragedy versus one of abuse. not that this makes him any less of a jerk or be any narcissistic-like. just because you're a victim does not mean you can't cause harm or become an abuser. i'll be damned if people try to remove that aspect of his character. he has explicitly expressed how he views others of his kind as beneath him, he thinks he is superior, regardless if that was caused by his tragic or loss or be a victim of racism/specie-ism is irrelevant. the man definitely has a massive ego. as opposed to most of the main characters, save for Millie, Striker probably had a normal childhood with loving parents, no familial abuse like Moxxie or Blitzo. i hope we get to see his story before Viv decides to give him off a punk ass death, which i'm almost sure is going to happen, but we'll see...
