Anniversary Of A Decade
BLOG | Anniversary Of A Decade | delphinemusic #Fibromyalgia #ChronicPain #chronicillness #Autistic #COVID #Long COVID
TODAY…. Things are more than a bit rough and Lolli is pretty bad – Isobars have Skyrocketed from 960mb to 996mb now, and still going up to over 1000mb today… I mean, it’s Technically Good News in itself, but the rise is debilitating 😒😖😟😕 Storm Ciaran turned up at JUST The Wrong Time. And Samhain brought in Anniversaries that I don’t want to recognise and know are… Real. Samhain was the DECADE…

Fantastic bass response, improved clarity, and an attractive design. The multi-driver Volür is not just for Nio fans looking for an upgrade but for any basshead after some quality lows.

"isobar" is one of those words where broad scientific literacy really comes back to bite me because i always think "no, it can't be that, that's a term in [meteorology/nuclear physics], not [nuclear physics/meteorology]" and have to google "term for [nuclides with same mass/contours of equal pressure]"

Thermodynamic Processes: Isobaric, Isochoric, Isothermal, and Adiabatic
A process in thermodynamics is the method by which the initial state of a system changes to the final state of a system. Technically speaking, there are countless types of thermodynamic processes to define each possible method in existence, most of which are unnamed. Of the specific named thermodynamic processes, there are four basic options.
Isobaric, isochoric, and isothermal (and, indeed, any other processes with the prefix iso-) are all processes in which a single variable is kept constant. For isobaric, pressure is constant, for isochoric, volume is constant, and for isothermal, temperature is constant. The fourth option, adiabatic processes, are processes in which there is no exchange of heat.

Ezana Concept Art
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Concept art and translations for Ezana! Translation notes and image id under the cut.
Translation notes:
On the first page when Ikushima is talking about how he feels pressure to make his drawings beautiful, he's actually saying something more like "Usually with sexy woman I go 'I'm obligated to/I must make them beautiful!'... " but no matter how I phrased it the wording felt awkward in English, so I changed the sentence to go without the quotes.
There's a note on the second page above the monochrome sketch that was pretty hard to read (the middle character in particular might have been scribbled out?), so I kind of guessed at the rough meaning from the surrounding characters. The first kanji seems to be 玄, which has the general meaning of "mysterious, occultness, black, deep, profound," and the third kanji seems to be 器, which has the general meaning of "utensil, vessel, receptacle, implement, instrument, ability, container, tool, set". I went with "mysterious staff" as the meaning of the kanji together, also working off of the fact that it's. um. pointing at a staff that seems vaguely mysterious.
"Call forth the rain" was more literally just "rain," but it uses a particle at the end that has a vaguely commanding/requesting vibe to it, so I added extra words to convey that.
There's a part on the second page where I write "SHAMAN" in all caps. On that particular line, "Shaman" was written out using English phonetics, whereas on the rest of the page when I use the word it's the Japanese word for an equivalent concept.
"Lines like a weather map" is literally "isobar pattern". I'm assuming that most people aren't familiar with the word "isobar" (including myself) but from a brief google search, isobars are the lines that show up on a map when weather forecasts are trying to show the range of a storm and the barometric pressure specifically. Since it's (probably) not a commonly-known word, I just wrote out the "weather map" stuff instead.
"Sexy as it sounds" is a weird one. I think it's a portion of this phrase, which is defined as, "not existing despite seeming like it should", but just uses some different particles at the end which I'm assuming make it non-negative (e.g., "as sexy as it should be"). But I couldn't find a ton of examples of how the phrase is used though or what the differences in particles would be, so I just kind of went with the auto-translation I got from Deepl.

[id: Multiple images from the Triangle Strategy artbook surrounding Ezana Qlinka. There is a page with a large colored portrait of her, along with a smaller line drawing in the corner. There are two illustrator's notes at the bottom: the first is, "Ezana has a really lovely ethnic design. Actually, after the character's portrait was completed, Mr. Ikushima redid all the linework, which added a lot to the character's beauty! (Yoshiura Rina)" and the second is, "Ezana is primitive, spiritual, and also a mysterious kind of character. With sexy women I usually feel pressure to make them beautiful, but strangely she was very easy to draw. I like how the natural colors are interspersed with the lapis lazuli. (Ikushima Naoki)". On the second page, the top half has several drawings of Ezana in a design close to her canon one. It is titled, "Weather Manipulator (Shaman)". There is one drawing where Ezana is without her headdress, captioned, "If there are different ranks of shaman, I think it'd be fine to start out without the headdress." There is a note pointing to her headress labeled, "Sheep's skull with some parts cut off," and another that reads, "Horns. Red and blue cord is coiled." Another note points to a full sheep skull and reads, "Origin. It's been shaved away starting at about this area." It points to roughly the middle of it. Another note points to a feather ruff she wears, labeled, "Crow feathers". Her staff is labeled, "A staff with elements similar to a dreamcatcher". There is a portrait of her from the back, with a note reading, "Back of the dress is open." The second half of the page is titled, "Weather Manipulator (Shaman) Large Brainstorming WIP". There are 5 drawings, each of a different potential design. The first is similar to her canon design, but with darker skin and a black dress. The second is very colorful, and has the notes, "Hear the song from the wind and go into a trance" as well as "Lines like a weather map" and "I think it would look better if the saturation was lowered a little or the colors were narrowed down a bit." The third drawing has a purple cloak with eyes on it, and seems to be throwing seeds into the air, captioned, "Sowing seeds toward the sky." The fourth design uses more pastels/bright colors, and has a drum at her hip. She seems to be saying, "Thunder!" and there is a note that reads, "Beat the cover and let it resonate through the air." The fifth drawing is of a woman wearing a full mask and a heavy cloak made of grass fibers. It has several bullet points including, "Weather Manipulator (Shaman)," "Female SHAMAN", "Indigenous - Separate wind and lightning magic", and "As sexy as it sounds." She holds a staff which is labeled, "Mysterious Staff" and also has a note reading, "Indigenous". She seems to be saying, "Bring forth the rain..." There are two illustrator's notes on the bottom. The first reads, "Mr. Asano requested that I add in leopard print, and I thought about how I could make it unique. (Naoki Ikushima)" and the second reads, "Looking at it again, it's a really sexy outfit. And it's great in battle! (Tomoya Asano)" /end id]

(via Under Intense [Air] Pressure from Rollercoaster Isobars)
.....
Fibromyalgia has narrowed my world in a way that nothing else ever has... Then it also got itself a "friend" -- Long COVID. Long COVID then went and got SEVERELY Exacerbated by Five Months of Hellish BURNOUT because of the STUPID Hospital's Treatment (or amazing lack thereof) of Lolli. Said BurnOut has rendered me... Entirely Non-Functional.
In about as bad a condition as I was when I was battling SEPSIS.... But Then... Along Comes The Big Fibro Nemesis... The GODDAMNED WEATHER -- And the Rollercoaster Isobars that cause PAIN & Paresthesia like No Other to me...

Skew-T graphs will be the death of me
hi if you thought i’d strictly post art here well you’re DEAD WRONG and i am an UNHINGED METEOROLOGY MAJOR so here we fucking go hellsite
before i even get to the behemoth that is a Skew-T I have to talk about the previous lab I did so let’s talk about SOUNDINGS from a RADIOSONDE.
Every day at 0000UTC and 1200UTC here in the united states if a NWS station has enough helium and/or budget to do so they launch a WEATHER BALLOON.
Tumblr media
ATTACHED TO THESE IS A VERY IMPORTANT STYROFOAM BOX called a RADIOSONDE. They collect all the data as the balloon goes up including pressure, altitude, wind speed, temperature, dew point depression, a lot of important things. The data they collect is collectively called a SOUNDING and the raw data looks like this:
72235 TTAA 67121 72235 99000 21017 19009 00089 ///// ///// 92761 16015 19531 85482 14650 20036 70094 05873 21528 50576 12560 25060 40742 25746 25061 30944 42759 24566 25064 49769 25586 20209 54583 25588 15390 61181 26582 10638 67979 26553 88119 67779 24568 77176 26099 41116 31313 58208 81106 51515 10164 00000 10194 19530 20031= and so on there are like two other parts that look a lot like this.
I’m not gonna tell you how we decode these but basically at required pressure levels such as 1000, 925, 850, 700 hPA, etc. it tells us the temperature, dew point depression, altitude in geopotential meters/decameters, wind direction, and wind speed. The next two parts say the same stuff but at more levels and are more specific.
ALL THAT SHIT gets put on THIS FUCKER.
Tumblr media
THIS IS CALLED A SKEW-T DIAGRAM.
i have to plot DATA on THIS for my lab due TOMORROW which is already late because I missed two crucial days in class due to mental health and my dog being sick so I’ve been taking notes on them ALL WEEKEND.
I love data as much as the next STEM major who loves data, but which dumbass decided that we were gonna make a menace of a graph that tries to fit as much information in a single goddamn thing as possible? I have no clue. Here’s what you get to know about this.
The horizontal lines with labels in the middle of them reading numbers like 1000, 950, 900, in intervals of 50 and using hectoPascal units are ISOBARS. These are lines of constant pressure and in meteorology we use these because pressure levels are far more relevant than altitude, and how high or low they are moves around so it’d get even more confusing even quicker if we actually used height (which we do but not right now I have enough on my plate).
The diagonal orange lines with the positive slope (so they point like [ / ] ) are called ISOTHERMS. If you’re already catching on you’ll figure these are lines of constant temperature which in this diagram is in degrees Celsius labeled I think within the respective isotherm here. The labeling schemes are not actually standardized which makes me want to strangle someone but I better get over that fast because there’s a lot of shit like that in meteorology. USUALLY they’re labeled at the bottom of the chart but not here because fuck me i guess.
Those are the easy ones. NOW I GET TO TALK ABOUT ADIABATS.
oh my god are they even. where the fuck are my dry adiabats. OH GOD I HAVE TO SQUINT
The very faint orange lines in the background that like, fuck, how do I describe them. The faint orange lines that look like they’re perpendicular to the isotherms (they are not) but are actually curved like the bottom half of the letter C are called DRY ADIABATS. These are lines of CONSTANT POTENTIAL TEMPERATURE. What the fuck does that mean? GOOD QUESTION.
Dry Adiabats indicate the rate of change of the temperature of a parcel of dry air rising or descending adiabatically, meaning with no loss (or gain) of heat by the parcel. For each multiple of 10 degrees C, that Dry Adiabat shares its label with the respective Isotherm reflecting the temperature of its point of intersection with the 1000 hPA isobar. If your eyes glazed over and you didn’t understand a word I just said, that’s fine. Me neither.
So what’s constant potential temperature? It’s constant temperature we THINK it is. So that line could, potentially, represent that temperature. Maybe. I love science.
The green lines that make a really stretched out S sometimes, I don’t know how to describe these, these are called SATURATION ADIABATS, or MOIST ADIABATS, or SATURATION PSEUDO-ADIABATS. Nothing is standardized and I am suffering immeasurably. They represent lines of constant equivalent potential temperature. What the fuck does THAT mean?
GOOD QUESTION! They represent the rate of change in temperature of a rising parcel of saturated air, assuming all condensed water vapor is liquid and falls out as the parcel rises (this is known as the pseudo-adiabatic assumption). Before you ask, I don’t know either. Pseudo-adiabatic dude just trust me.
Saturation Adiabats are labeled with the celsius temperature value of its point of intersection with the 1000 hPa isobar, and they share that label with the dry adiabats and isotherms.
Finally, the dashed lines with the positive slope are called SATURATION MIXING-RATIO LINES. AKA: HUMIDITY MIXING-RATIO LINES. They represent constant values of water vapor capacity, meaning the number of grams of water per kg of dry air required to saturate said air at a particular temperature and pressure. They’re confusingly and terrifyingly labeled at the bottom of the diagram with a range of 0.1 g/kg to 40g/kg in parts of water vapor per 1000 parts of dry air. Because the vapor capacity of air varies non-linearly with temperature, the intervals for labeling these are NOT uniform.
Congrats that’s all the lines, here’s a image that tells you that quicker and better:
Tumblr media
oh yeah and on the right side Wind is plotted somewhere just like it is in any other weather station plot with the flags and the staff in the direction the wind is coming from etc. etc. yeah.
I wrote this while procrastinating on this exact assignment I had to decode a sounding and now I have to plot the temperature and dew point lines on one of these fuckers see y’all later for another stupid weather rant wahoo if im wrong on anything I’m sorry mostly to myself because that means I’m about to fail this lab bye bye

St Placid’s Day
Yay! Got another birthday present in the post this morning from an old gay friend in Dublin who understands me much better than the other old friend in Bournemouth who internetted me a cactus to replace the deceased Eric. It's a facsimile of an old perpetual almanac with daily observations from the 15th-18th Centuries.
Apparently today (5th Oct) is St Placid's Day, [monk who was saved from drowning by another monk who ran across the water on the orders of St Benedict] and this week is the ideal time to seek out oak apples and observe their condition instead of relying on your TV's local weather reporter. I quote:
If thou wilt see and know how it will go that year, then take heed of the Oak Apples. When they be within full of Spiders, then followeth a naughty Year; if they have within them Flies, that betokens a good Year, or if they have Maggots in them. If there be nothing in them, then followeth a great Dearth. If there be many, and early ripe, so shall it be an early Winter, and much Snow afore Christmas, and after that much cold; if the inner Part be fair and clear, then shall the Summer be fair and the corn good; but if they be very moist, then shall the Summer also be moist.
So all you have to do is find an oak tree, climb up it and locate a leaf with an oak apple on it, cut it open and see what's inside and then you won't need to listen to some guy talking about isobars and pressure fronts. Amazing how gall wasps know these things -- and persuade spiders and flies and maggots to live in their oakleaf leavings.
Anyone hoping for a naughty year, I should point out that in those days naughty meant scant and worthless, and definitely doesn't involve lingerie, cream puffs and a chocolate fountain.
Yesterday is very interesting too -- St Francis's Day, when swallows disappear. Did you know people used to believe that swallows hibernated at the bottom of ponds and lakes or hid in rocks and caves for the winter like bats. And October 3rd -- St Gerard's Day -- gives some 17th Century recipes for making cider which I'm thinking of Tipp-Exxing out so Mad doesn't get ideas and ruin my apple trees. I made some scrumpy once, in my student days. It was lethal, tasted of stale gin and fermented cardboard, but went down very well at the Halloween party.
This is a glorious little book, I'm going to enjoy myself.

For the last few days, the BlackOuts have become Relentless – Again… But what’s worse This Time is that The Dysphagia is coming back. Again. It’s been a Long While since Constant Aspirating was a genuine Problem. Now it’s been happening Continuously. With the Major Issues surrounding the BlackOuts, it’s no wonder, I suppose, really – except it’s Not been a Problem like this for A Long…

Lino Printing
Umbrella
I decided to use lino to print onto an umbrella. I made this lino print based on the isobars shown on weather maps. I used red ink so that the pattern stood out on the umbrella. I plan on making a series of lino prints and printing onto the umbrella.
