Note
could you elaborate, why do you believe that people online continue to talk about the flint water crisis as if it were still active? Is it just ignorance of the solution or are there ongoing health issues?
i mean i think people do that bc "everything is fucked and nothing ever gets better" is a genre of post that tickles the limbic system, and in the attention economy of the internet, anything that tickles the limbic system tends to do well, bc it produces engagement. outrage, and outrage-adjacent things, and cliches like "why is no one talking about [major news article everyone is talking about]" and "don't get excited about apparently-good-thing X, here's why it's actually just as bad as [completely different thing it is in no way just as bad as]" and all that other stuff.
and because negativity and outrage--even negativity with no underlying substance--makes a bigger splash than positive stuff with real underlying substance, continuing to repeat "flint doesn't have clean water" (a crisis that did genuinely drag on for a very long time!) has more salience than the news that flint's water problem was fixed (something that took a long time when it finally was properly tackled and didn't generate a single large headline).
there's kind of a similar dynamic in climate news actually, where genuine improvements in areas like energy storage and clean energy rollout and new nuclear permitting don't make a dent in people's narrative that everything is fucked and we're making no progress because IPCC forecasts about what would happen if we hit 4 degrees of warming are genuinely very bad and scary (and, thankfully, no longer on the table!), whereas the boring policy details of stuff in the Inflation Reduction Act, or China's continuing expansion of EV manufacturing are, well... boring. although climate news is different in other ways--like, the planet will continue to warm until carbon emissions are net negative, so even as we make progress on that issue the crisis continues. it's not all good news. but there is good news there, which just gets much less traction online bc of the dynamics of how news works on the internet.
needless to say, though, i think if you want to have an accurate understanding of the world you need to internally mentally check your own tendency to succumb to engagement bait like this. worst case scenario you fall into a doom loop, which i think is pretty unhealthy just in general. but if you notice somebody post something compelling, and you click on their username, and it turns out that all they post is about how the world is fucked, and nothing good ever happens, and we're all gonna die, i think you should be suspicious of them and their motives. not because doomposting is inherently manipulative or deceptive--a lot of people genuinely are doomers! but that doesn't mean they're not responding to the limbic incentives of social media, either. after all, if you too express nothing but pessimism and outrage, then the people addicted to pessimism and outrage will applaud you for being Very Serious and give you lots of engagement and attention, and you will react accordingly.
and also, you know. some people do just lie on the internet for attention. that is absolutely a thing that happens. i am not inclined to bend over backwards to try to reconstruct a generous framing of those lies where maybe people somehow are under the mistaken impression that there is some ongoing sub-problem affecting flint that they have mistaken for being isomorphic to the original crisis. some of them are just liars!

even though ur not vegan thanks for being nice to us (: it sucks how tumblr is generally so hostile towards vegans
oh you're entirely welcome!
and I mean I'd say I don't understand why tumblr is so viscerally anit-vegan but actually I'm pretty sure it's totally isomorphic to how people on here react to someone saying their favorite tv show is #problematic by suicide baiting the critic. Just a critical mass of people who react to the smallest implication that they do not live morally unimpeachable lives with reflexive violence.

Interhalogen Compounds
Interhalogen compounds are molecules which contain two or more different halogen atoms and only halogen atoms.
Most interhalogen compounds are knows as binary since they are composed of only two distinct elements.
Interhalogen compounds are molecules which contain two or more different halogen atoms.
There are 4 types: AX, AX3, AX5, and AX7.
Tumblr media
Classification: Interhalogens maybe be divided into two categories
Neutral interhalogen: contains two or more halogen atoms that are not charged. Ex: ICl, ClF3, IF5, IF7, etc.
Negatively charged interhalogens: has a negative charge, anions. Ex: ICl2- and ICl 4-
Positively charged interhalogens: have a positive charge, cations. Ex: ICl2+ and IF4+
Note: When naming interhalogen compounds, the less electronegative element is mentioned first Ex: ICl -> iodine chloride
Preparation: 2 methods
First way involves the direct mixing of halogens and the other includes a reaction of halogens with the lower interhalogen compound
Cl2 + F2 -> 2ClF
Br2 + 3F2 -> 2BrF3
Br2 + 5F2 -> 2BrF5
I2 + Cl2 -> 2ICl
I2 + 3Cl2 -> 2ICl3
In other cases a halogen atom acts with another lower interhalogen to form a higher interhalogen compound.
IF5 + F2 -> IF7
BrF3 + F2 -> BrF5
Properties
In vapor, liquid, and solid phases.
Covalent in nature
Diamagnetic in nature because they have bond pairs and lone pairs
Very reactive because the A-X bond is much weaker than X-X bond in halogens (with the exception of F-F).
Structure
1) Structure of AX
The compounds of this type are linear, ClF, BrF, IF, IBr, ICl, BrCl, are all linear in structure
Ex: electronic config of chlorine atom -> 3s²3p⁵.
The unpaired electron from a covalent bond with atom of the second halogen. The resulting molecule AX is therefore linear.
Tumblr media
2) Structure of AX3
Compounds of this type have T-Shape structure.
The orbitals of central halogen atom are involved in sp³d hybridization.
Ex: IF3, Iodine -> 5s²5p⁵
Tumblr media
In AX3 molecules, 3 bond pairs + 2 lone pairs = 5 coordination numbers.
Therefore coordination number is 5, hybridization is sp³d and structure is T-Shaped.
Tumblr media
3)Structure of AX5
These compounds are formed by sp³d² hybridization of the orbitals of the central atom A and have square pyramidal structure.
Ex: IF5: Iodine -> 5s²5p⁵
Tumblr media
In AX5 molecule, 5 bond pairs + 1 lone pair = 6 coordination numbers.
Therefore CN=6, hybridization is sp³d², and structure is square pyramidal.
Tumblr media
Structure of AX7
This compound has a pentagonal bipyramidal structure since it is formed by sp³d³ hybridization of the orbitals of the central atom.
Tumblr media
Poly halides
When the halide ions combine with the halogen molecules or interhalogen, univalent ions called poly halide ions are obtained and the compounds are called poly halides.
Ex: ICl2⁻, ICl4⁻, I3⁻
Structure of ICl4⁻
In tetra chloro iodide ion, iodine involves sp³d² hybridization.
Tumblr media
In ICl⁻, 4 bond pairs + 2 lone pairs = 6 CN
Structure is square planar
Tumblr media
Structure of I3⁻
The structure is similar to ICl⁻, central I⁻ is undergoing sp³d hybridization.
Tumblr media
3 lone pairs + 2 bond pairs = 5 CN
Shape is linear.
Tumblr media
Pseudo halogens
Groups formed by the combination of two or more P-block elements with unit negative charge.
Ex: Cyanogen (CN)2 -> Cyanide (CN)-
Difference between halogens and pseudo halogens:
Halogens are chemical elements in group 17. Pseudo halogens are chemical compounds having a combination of several chemical elements showing chemical characteristics of halogens.
halogens are chemical elements, pseudo halogens are chemical compounds.
halogens are mono atomic while pseudo halogens are polyatomic.
Similarities between pseudo halogens and halogens:
Both are very reactive
Both are dimeric and isomorphic: Cl2 is isomorphous to (CN)2
Both combine with metals like silver, lead, and mercury to form insoluble salts: Ag + Cl -> AgCl and Ag + CN -> AgCN
Both react with alkali: Cl2 + 2NaOH -> NaCl + NaOCl + H2O and (SCN)2 + 2NaOH -> NaSCN + NaOSCN + H2O

On a Mountain Trail - Part 3
The trail wound on through the trees. Kiara was sure they must have left Uncle Rog’s land ages ago, but there had been no sign of the fence. While Uncle Rog didn’t mind any of the townsfolk coming up to hunt, he did try to keep four wheelers off his land to maintain the deer habitat.
Instead, she and Frax scrambled up a steep path through a rockfall. It passed through a short tunnel before it opened out into what must have been a cave millions of years ago. Boulders littered the ground, weathered and smooth with moss. Where the center was open to the sky stood an ash grove.
In between the trees were rooms and sheds made of wooden posts. Heavy cloth was bundled on top or pulled away so the spaces were open to the morning air.
“The trees give you everything you need.”
“Can’t you tell that’s maple?” Frax grumbled. “We’d never cut down a home to build a shed.”
“Are your houses up in the branches?” Kiara peered up but couldn’t see anything.
“No,” Frax muttered, distractedly watching the meandering escan. “We live in the trunks.”
Kiara followed Frax through the village. Any time an escan saw them, they would frown and withdraw. Frax waved to a woman who immediately walked into a tree trunk and vanished.
“She just –”
“Yeah. I should have expected.”
Kiara’s attention was pulled away from the impossible sights around her. Frax shuffled, eyes down, with his shoulders slumped. He looked like a stick sagging over a fire rather than a reed in the wind.
He froze as two escan hurried towards them. Kiara couldn’t make anything of their body language, but Frax didn’t react like he was happy to see them.
“Kiara, these are my parents, Olea and Leptal.”
The two escan were a similar size, and they didn’t seem to be mammals. Olea wore capri length pants and had shorter quills than Leptal or Frax, so Kiara assumed she was something isomorphic to a mammalian female.
There was also something maternal about the way she held her arms as she scolded Frax. “We’re not interested in pleasantries, young man. What are you doing back?”
“I know.” Frax’s voice was quiet. “But I was hoping I could try again.”
“You know we’d love to have you come home…” Leptal said, sounding sincere.
“But you know what the elders said,” Olea cut in. “You can’t be here.”
Frax had mentioned doing something wrong, but Kiara couldn’t imagine him doing anything severe enough to warrant banishment.
“Maybe I can help,” she offered. “You know, offer an outside perspective.”
Leptal smiled warmly, but Olea shook her head.
“There’s nothing to discuss.” Olea’s voice was firm.
“We’re sure you mean well,” Leptal said, placing a hand on Olea’s shoulder, “but we can’t go against the elders.”
“And we shouldn’t. Frax knows what he has to do.”
Frax nodded, but Kiara was indignant. “He’s your son. How can you treat him like this?”
Olea made the same pushing motion Frax had used. “It’s not about love. He broke a trust the village had placed in him, and he has to correct it. Right now, he’s a disgrace to everyone.”
Kiara’s back stiffened. “If you’re not careful, there may be a time when Frax never comes back to you. What difference will respectability make then?”
A black and white newspaper picture of a crumpled sports car rose in her mind, but Kiara pushed it down.
Not now, Elani. I’m sorry.
Olea pulled herself up to her full height. “Who do you think you are walking in here and implying you know what’s best for my son? You think I haven’t worried about him every night since he left?”
Frax straightened somewhat and looked Olea in the face. “Mom, I –”
She cut him off. “But none of that matters until he brings back the drinking horn.”
“Wait, what?”
Leptal smiled kindly. “The sacred horn blessed by the Meliae of our grove.” He gestured at the trees. “It’s for the protection of the village.”
“And Frax lost it,” Olea spit out, not looking at any of them.
“I’m so sorry, Mom,” Frax tried, but Olea was unmoved.
Kiara felt a laugh bubble up but knew she’d look crazy if it escaped. Instead, she slung her backpack off and pulled out the horn.
“Do I have good news for all of you.”
Instead of being happy, Frax and Leptal just looked away.
Olea sighed. “Thank you for trying, but it doesn’t count. He has to find it, not some human.”
“So? I want to help. Let Frax and I prove to you that he’s more responsible now.”
Frax smiled and patted her shoulder. “Thanks, Kiara, but it’s a bad idea. I’ll fix this myself if you’ll just go drop the horn out in the woods somewhere.”
Kiara looked at Olea. “What does Frax need to do?”
She pushed a hand out in warning. “He has to take it back to the cave.”
“Oh no,” Frax cut in, “No way. No chance. You are not going to that cave, Kiara.”
“We’ll do it.”
Leptal offered a sad little hand push, but Olea smiled. Kiara hoped it was a smile of encouragement.
Frax groaned. “What have you done?”

you're makin' me blow my mind
Tumblr media
I'll be honest with you here, when I first got the idea for the setting in this story, my mind went straight to the gutter. I think you'll see why. But I resisted my terrible horny tendencies, so please enjoy this sfw but very much yandere-inspired piece.
PS. Special thanks to the University of Cambridge for those delicious academic questions. PS2. I am an uneducated fool. I don't know any of this shit I'm writing about. @ any smart people reading this: please don't come for me in the night. I tried.
Warnings: Some violence, but nothing gorey. Still, there's blood.
The silence in the library is strangely oppressive. If you strain your ears, you can hear the flicks of pages and occasional stifled whispers. But the lack of noise beyond that, this forced and demanding silence, actually makes it more difficult for you to concentrate.
You stare at the paper in front of you, fisting your hair as you hunch over the table. You must have read the question at least five times in a row now, trying desperately to focus on what it's asking you to do.
Show that every automorphism α of the dihedral group D6 is equal to conjugation by an element of D6.
Automorphism. Last week's class covered this in depth. You should know the formula to working this out. It's lodged somewhere in the back of your subconsciousness, and you try to prompt your brain into remembering it properly, instead of the sympathetic but unhelpful mantra of God but I hate abstract algebra that's been replaying in your head for the past five minutes.
It's not just the location or your dislike for advanced mathematics that's hindering you. There's also the fact that you can feel the distracting weight of a hand resting on your thigh. The thin material of your black slacks does little to protect you from the contact, and you can feel the warmth of Fugo's palm seeping into your skin. His attention seems wholly focused on the thick book in front of him, and sometimes his thumb rubs small, slow circles on your inner thigh. An almost absent-minded gesture.
And it's making you absent-minded too. Tempting as it is to tell him to let go or shake him off you however, you do neither. You know by now this is all part of the process.
Never mind that. Focus.
You read the question one more time, closing your eyes for a few seconds and taking yourself back to last week's classes. Finally, as some hint of what you're supposed to do for this question starts lighting up in your brain, you start writing, uncertainly at first, and then ever faster as you try to keep up with all the mental maths you're forced to do on top of recalling the correct method.
Some minutes later, you stare at the page you scribbled full of numbers, symbols and a small but complex diagram. Everything looks... Messy, but right. Probably.
You correct your posture, straightening your back and lowering your writing arm. Next to you, Fugo stirs at the movement. His eyes linger on the page of his book a little longer, before he turns his attention to your paper, leaning in to take a look.
Your heartbeat feels a little erratic, hiccuped by anxiety as you wait, watching his keen gaze scan over your work. There's a pause, neither of you moving, and then...
The pain is sudden and sharp and stinging. You tense and gasp, unable to stop a small, embarrassing noise escaping from the back of your throat. In response, Fugo only squeezes tighter, pinching your inner thigh mercilessly until you swear you can feel the pain in your gut.
You gasp in another audible breath, and Fugo throws you a warning glare, wordlessly telling you to keep your mouth shut. But it's so hard to remain calm against that throbbing, hot, intimate pain, right there in your lap. Your eyes well up with tears and you're barely resisting the urge to push him away, shove him away, make him stop--
And finally, finally, he lets go. A crawling burn spreads through your muscles, the pain radiating over your thigh and all the way down to your knee. There's definitely going to be a bruise.
"You got this wrong again." You hear the anger in Fugo's lowered voice, and you can tell he's barely managing to keep himself in check. "Read the question properly."
Had the two of you been anywhere else, you're sure he would have blown up in your face over this. You're sure he would have yelled and smacked you without hesitation - but that's exactly why you keep these sessions to the library.
At times, these silent, secretive punishments feel almost worse than anything he’d do to you outside. Restraining yourself from reacting when the pain courses through your body means he’s not the only one who has to struggle to keep his voice down each time you get a question wrong.
But you sit there and take it anyway. You can’t just give up on your tutor over a small thing like this, right? And all in all, these sessions do help you in your studies. Surely it’s not that high a price to pay.
You shake out of your thoughts, and do as Fugo instructed. You read the question in your mind, trying to focus on what you did wrong and not the burning ache in your thigh.
Show that every automorphism α of the dihedral group D6 is equal to conjugation by an element of D6. Yes... You’re confident you did exactly that.
Fugo lets out a frustrated breath at your continued silence and asks: "What's the group it's asking for?"
"...D6," you respond quietly.
He stares at you expectantly. Seeing that you're still not sure, he prompts again, this time a little calmer. "The relation between D3, D4 and D6 is...?"
The answer then clicks in your mind. "They're... isomorphic to their own automorphism groups," you recite in resignation. “They need a different equation.” You remember reading about that in class. Why did you have to have such a spotty memory?
Fugo is still frowning, but he seems appeased that at least you know the answer. "You see? You can do it," he says, glancing over you from the top, down to where his hand had been moments ago. "You just need a bit of encouragement."
You're not sure why his definition of 'encouragement' equates to 'fear of getting physically hurt', but that's besides the point. Fugo instructs you to finish the paper, so with a deep breath, you gather yourself and try again.
There's just one question left. You've been here for nearly an hour, and there's about ten minutes left until lunch time in the cafeteria. Eager to be done with this, you give it your all, not allowing yourself the privilege of distractions. The fact that this time Fugo keeps his hands to himself helps a lot.
The last question is similar to the previous one, still about abstract algebra, and though you can't be certain, you think you manage to recall all the necessary details to do it properly. You grip the pen tightly to mask how your hand trembles, moving your arms out of the way when you’re done writing. Fugo once again pauses in his reading to check your answers.
When you see him reach for you, you shut your eyes tight and brace yourself. But all you feel is a light, reassuring touch on your back. "Very good. I knew you could do it."
Oh. Oh, good. You did it. It’s over. You're so relieved you find yourself smiling giddily, and Fugo returns it, visibly more relaxed as well. As you think about starting to pack up, he quietly says: "Next time we should cover biology. I know it's your weak point."
Your smile widens and without even thinking your answer through, you respond in an excited whisper. "Oh, I've actually wanted to ask Giorno to help me out with that. It's his major after all, so I--"
Your words are cut off when Fugo suddenly grabs your face, forcing your mouth shut. His fingers grip your lower jaw painfully, but you can't even focus on that as your eyes dart around the library in a panic. Him grabbing you like that seemed so aggressive, so violent in this quiet, peaceful place - what if somebody noticed?!
You try to whisper his name pleadingly, but he doesn't let go. His nails dig into your cheeks, and his fingers press down so strongly you feel the pressure in your teeth. You finally turn your eyes back to him, finding him glaring at you with a furious gaze.
"You don't need Giorno," he says, and your heart flutters in a fresh wave of panic at his volume. "You don't need anybody else to be helping you but me. I'm your tutor. Understand?"
You want to nod, but it's impossible with him holding you. So instead, you choke out a quiet yeah through clenched teeth, hoping that’s enough for him. You're willing to give him as many apologies as he wants - just not here, not now, not in front of all these people.
Fugo releases you a moment later, and you hunch over your seat, moving your hands to cover your face. Is that blood you feel running down your cheek?
God. Why did you have to go and say something so stupid? You know well how short-tempered he is, and you've gone and annoyed him again. Stupid, stupid.
You try to wipe the blood on your hands, but it's not exactly helpful. As you sit there in mild distress, wondering if it's worth getting your nice pink jumper all messed up for this, Fugo leans closer to you again. You flinch, but all he does is wipe your cheeks with the sleeve of his own jacket. He's not very gentle, but you say nothing, staying still until he's done rubbing the rough material over the small crescent cuts in your skin.
Afterwards, you start putting your things away without a word. He doesn't apologise, his eyes back on his book, but you don't expect him to. This kind of thing happens all the time.
You stand up and noiselessly shrug on your bag, muttering a quiet thank you to Fugo for his help. You then move to walk away, intending on forgetting about all this over a nice lunch with your friends, when Fugo grabs your wrist to stop you.
You look over your shoulder at him, trying to appear calm. "Fugo..?"
"I'll see you here tomorrow. Same time," he says evenly, and you're glad to see he's calmed down.
"Yeah, okay," you agree, inching away again, eager to leave.
His grip hardens and he narrows his eyes at you. "You bring up Giovanna again, I'm going to find a whole other way to encourage you to study. And you won't like it much better."
You bite your lip, but nod in understanding. As soon as he lets go, you turn around and briskly walk away. You see the librarian throw you a frown as you leave, but thankfully you are otherwise undisturbed as you exit the building.
(Later, when your friends question the strange marks on your face, you try to jokingly brush them off. "Sometimes I get so angry when I study, I end up hurting myself!" you say in what you intend to be a light-hearted remark. There's a long silence after that as your friends exchange glances. No-one laughs.)
