My Lazy, Poor, Stupid Person’s Attempt to Paint Tabletop Miniatures

This has nothing to do with covid-19 really, it’s just something I reckoned I’d share. For several years I’ve played Dungeons & Dragons, and occasionally others like Call of Cthulhu and Delta Green, or Shadowrun. Though, I say ‘play’, when I mostly run games as a Dungeon Master. It’s one of those “hobbies” that is a lot of fun for someone like me, but requires a ton of dedication, so it isn’t always easy to get a dedicated group together.

Anyhow, I generally homebrew settings and adventures, never really been too big on running pre-written games, even if some of them are fantastically written. And one of the most frustrating things is I some times want to have a miniature on the battle grid that looks a certain way. This is hardly a big deal, since miniatures are just markers meant for reference in combat encounters, the real image of the characters is in all of our heads.

Still, I sometimes want to have something especially specific, a lot of the players in my current group appreciate cool looking miniatures, and seeing as I’m usually hard-up for cash, I can’t always buy pre-painted mini-figures, unless I get a good bulk deal on ebay or something.

One of my recent attempts to acquire bulk miniatures came a few years back when I realized during the 4E days, Wizards of the Coast had released boxed board games themed with the D&D style, which all came with a great deal of unpainted miniatures; these came in sets like Wrath of Ashardalon, or The Legend of Drizzt, with lots of themed minis for the board game’s scenario.

Anyhow, I’ve had a ton of these unpainted miniatures forever and use them often for nobody-NPCs and other characters the players run across. Lately, however, the group I’ve been running in a campaign for about eleven months (usually weekly), ran across a problem where their dragonborn ranger Grixxis was captured by and then negotiated his away out of the clutches of this ancient entity who calls herself Gorgoth (who appears to be a pale, beautiful young woman, but probably isn’t; even the not so arcane-y Grixxis intuited that much). She was actually impressed that he resisted her Sleep spell, and offered him a deal, she’d let him go but he needs to complete a task for her in the next seven days, and if it isn’t completed in that time frame his soul will be bound to her forever.

The task was to go to a mountaintop and retrieve something that resides there, though Gorgoth did not explain what the object was, so the party set off to find this mysterious mountain. The journey led them to an area of bad wilderness where no one lives, and where roving bands of orcs constantly hunt and war with one another, so only a few people know anything about that region. The party ended up hiring a guide, who was a wood elf exile named Skaya. They seemed to be intrigued by her because she’s living in a city which is currently at war with wood elves, so there’s a lot of prejudice and racism against her kind. Skaya does have facial tattoos that indicate she’s been exiled from her tribe and therefore no longer truly considered by her people to be a wood elf (their worst form of punishment in this universe), but still, the party seemed immediately fascinated by this single NPC among the potential seven or so they might’ve hired for this expedition.

Anyhow, my players have only gotten truly invested in one other NPC they’ve met before this; a small little orc toddler named Gruuba who they saved from a bunch of slave trading bandits early on in the campaign. I’ve had difficulty finding a good miniature for Gruuba too (because she’s really small and scrawny), but since she’s at the same developmental level as a human six year-old they try to keep her out of combat scenarios (despite Gruuba’s excited insistence that she enjoys using clubs “for smashings”). Since the party have begun to really enjoy Skaya as character, the longer they’ve slowly, slowly gotten to know more about her stand-offish personal history, I really wanted to get a miniature for her that reflected my image of her better than the one I’d been using.

So, even though I got basically no experience doing so, I bought a miniature from Reaper Miniatures, and after looking up a few tutorial vids for beginners like me, I set about trying to paint my first mini-figs.

Two things, if you’re looking into this yourself; First, I’m not totally unartistic, I write creatively and I sketch with pencils and ink. Painting’s fairly new to me, but it’s not like I have absolutely no artistic talent. I also solder a lot of really small wires and components in my normal daily job, so I may have better muscle control for this sort of thing than some people. I only mention this because I may have had a few advantages in this undertaking. I just don’t want to make people overly confident, keep things in perspective. So whatever your level of expertise at this, if you want to start just try to patiently measure your expectations, and don’t get discouraged if your first results aren’t so great. All things improve with time.

And B. if you’re poor, lazy, and stupid like me, there’re ways to get around that. This video I watched gave me a good rundown of the basic steps which are; - scrub the plastic down with some dish soap, luke-warm water, and a toothbrush; allow at least 1 hour to dry (I let them sit for a day because I’m paranoid), and be sure there’s no lingering moisture before you start painting - get a good primer or base coat on the model before you start adding other colors; lighter base coats allow more colors to show up easier, while darker base coats tend to make the colors you paint over them darker - stay calm and take your time - try to paint the colors that’ll go under other colors first, like, if a barbarian dude is shirtless but’s wearing a few pieces of armor, paint his shirtless skin first, then paint the armor he’s wearing second because it layers over better that way - use thinner paints and multiple coats of a color to get an even final color instead of one thick coat - allow each coat of paint to dry for 10 - 20 minutes before applying the next coat - learn about washes, pigments, and inks, because they’re awesome - get a decent varnish for a final protective coat, matte varnishes make the model look dryer and flat, gloss varnishes make the model look shiny and wet, if you do a coat of gloss and a coat of matte varnish it equalizes it pretty good

And this video here sort of laid to rest my fears that I’ll need to spend $600 on paints and washes and stuff. The very helpful lady in that video explains how she uses generic acrylic paints from the craft store (I got mine at Wal-Mart) to paint her Warhammer miniatures, and she even offers a method of making your own washes from a combination of paint and flavorless mouth wash. It’s genius. So try not to stress too much about buying the really nice brand name paints, because it’s not necessary, those paints just have an optimal mix I think, otherwise they’re the same damn thing as generic acrylic paints. Also, you’re just trying to learn, so unless you really, really feel like emptying your bank account, just use the generic stuff.

I started out painting something I didn’t care about. I wanted my miniature for Skaya to look badass and awesome, so I wanted to start with some practice miniatures. Grabbed a few from those 4E board game sets and gave it a shot. But I had also recently gotten hold of a Goliath Barbarian miniature from the Player’s Handbook Heroes sets (also from the 4E days) a rare find, since it usually goes for like $60.00 by itself. Randomly found some dude on ebay selling an unopened box set for $20.00, so I got a wild elf druid and a human berserker along with it. So I started out touching up the goliath’s armor to make it look more like armor and less like weird blue stuff.

Here’s a before-and-after for him (I didn’t take photos of them before because I wasn’t anticipating this, so I just found examples from around the web):

Next I tried a re-paint. A friend of mine had recently guest-played in my campaign and created a half-drow monk (his backstory was fantastic), so since nothing like that exists, I took a Soulknife Infiltrator miniature seen here:

And repainted it to sort of look like his half-drow Monk of the Open Palm:

I finally had the courage to do a full paint, so I grabbed the Dragonborn Elementalist from the Wrath of Ashardalon box, and painted her up with reddish scales (I’m one of those who thinks dragonborn should have physical attributes of their heritage).

In the box her name’s Heskan. I definitely used way too much wash on this one so she looks super shiny.

I then took the orc archers in that same box, and not really paying too much attention this time, quickly painted them, because I lack many orc archers:

At this point, I felt it was time to finally paint Skaya, the wood elf exile. I used the Reaper Bones model Deladrin, Female Assassin ($1.99) for Skaya’s mini.

And taking way more hours than I did on the others, which were only about 1-3 hours each, when you count waiting for the coats to dry, I managed to sort of make her look like Skaya, I guess:

After this, the fact that it wasn’t complete and utter shit, which is what I expected, I was encouraged. So I tried to do out party’s tortle cleric, named Daruuk of Chult (who oddly speaks with a Slavic accent, so that’s how people from Chult sound in our campaign), for whom we’ve lacked an accurate mini-figure for some time. I bought a pack of Spikeshell Warriors ($2.99) from the Reaper Bones line.

But Daruuk characteristically wields a large shield and a warhammer, so for some reason I got super detailed and bought a pack of loose shields from the Reaper Bones line ($0.99), then bought Halbarad ($1.49) a human cleric.

I clipped off Halbarad’s hammer at the hilt, then I trimmed the spikes off of the spikeshell warrior’s club, and used a dremel to carfully mill a hole inside the shaft of the spikeshell’s club, then pinned the hammer inside and secured it with gorilla gel. I used an actual cork board pin to push the shield onto the spikshell’s offhand after cutting off his turtle shell shield in order to pin it before gluing, then clipped off the rest of the cork board pin. Somehow, this ended up making the shield look meaner because it now has a like pyramidal spike sticking out the center. After allowing the glue to dry I painted him up, and my attempt at Daruuk the Death Cleric turned out thus:

I guess his hammer looks sort of Acme-level cartoony, but he’s a giant 350 lb. turtle-man who talks like Omega Red from X-Men The Animated Series, so I’m okay with that. The spikeshell also fits well with the razorback sub-race feature I allowed Daruuk’s player to homebrew for himself. I was really proud of this one.

Finally, because I’m an insane asshole who is getting obsessed with my new hobby, I decided it was dragons or bust. So I bought a pre-primed unpainted Young Blue Dragon from WizKids ($13.99).

And spent, like, three days meticulously testing different paint layers to see how they come out. I tried to paint her in the tradition of blue dragons as they appear in the art of Forgotten Realms material, but gave her a somewhat darker cast, and added metallic blue layers to her claws and spinal ridges. I still need to paint her base, put some highlights on her eyes to accentuate the glowing effect and add my washes to give her a final layer of dimension, but here’s how she came out so far:

Anyhow.

This is super long and I wonder if anyone will bother to read any of it. But just wanted to put this out there. From a dude who, if you asked me a year ago if I thought I could do this, I’d have said I’m too stupid, poor, and lazy. I still think of myself as all of those things. The real pros use crazy detailed techniques with like seven layered highlights on their models, and airbrushes and all kinds of other madness. I use maybe three coats total and I don’t get too worked up if I make a mistake here and there, and I haven’t spent more than maybe fifty bucks total across six weeks, and most of that was wasting paints because I was still learning how to mix different shades.

So if you got something you feel like you’ve always wanted to do but are too stupid, poor, and lazy to figure out, just go for it yo. I managed to crack out these bastards and I still think I suck, but it’s way better looking than I expected. For real though, you should see some of those Warhammer players, they got mad crazy god skills at this stuff compared to me. But your level of skill isn’t the point. The point is to have that moment with that thing you did, and look at it, and just go “Yeh, I did that” when at one time you never believed you ever could.

There’s always going to be somebody better than you, but even they, like all of us, are still learning.

1. A NOTE ABOUT ORGANIZING FONTS

Okay so... first of all-- I highly recommend using FontBase to manage your font files (It’s free and it’s available for Mac, Windows, and even Linux). The reason being, that as you install more and more fonts on your computer, the font menu in Photoshop will start to load really slowly. Which gets really frustrating really fast.

FontBase lets you organize your fonts into neat lil folders and activate/deactivate them as needed with a click, so you can keep the Font Menu Bloat at bay. There’s also a premium version (aptly called ‘Awesome’) that costs $3 a month and has some nifty extra features, but that’s neither her nor there. Yes, I throw three of my hard-earned dollars at them every month.

Also? If you have a work computer and a home computer, you can install FontBase on both systems and point it to a Dropbox or Google Cloud folder so that your font collection always stays in sync across both devices. 👌✨

2. WHERE TO FIND FONTS

Google Fonts So... Google Fonts is technically a webfont CDN, but all of the actual font files are available for free download from their Github repo. Alternatively, you can use FontBase to sync them directly to your computer. Which is nifty.

What I like about the Google Fonts library is 1) there’s some really NICE, high-quality font families available, and 2) it’s easily searchable.

So pop on over, play with the search filters, and if you find something you like, grab it off the Git Repo or sync it via FontBase.

League of Moveable Type It’s a free, open-source font foundry. How cool is that? The selection is pretty small, but there’s a lot of typographic staples to be found, and the quality is top notch 👌✨

Free Design Resources FDR is a great site for all kinds of design resources, but their font offerings are the most impressive. Particularly, it’s a great place to look for handwriting, script, or any other kind of ‘display’ fonts. 99% of them are demo versions of not-free fonts, but really that just means they don’t include special characters, which lbr you probably don’t need anyway.

Creative Market So as the name suggests, Creative Market is a marketplace for design resources. AKA the stuff ain’t free. HOWEVER, every week, they offer six products for free download-- a mix of fonts, textures, photo packs, etc. So create an account (it’s free) and keep an eye out for the weekly freebies.

Design Cuts This is another site that isn’t really free, though they do have a small selection of free stuff. I figured it’s worth mentioning because a lot of the fonts and textures I use, I buy from here. Every month (or two weeks? Or something?) they compile a bundle of about 20 products (be it typefaces, texture packs, or filters/actions/etc) and offer it at a massive discount (usually $30). Their stuff is always really great quality, so if they release a bundle that feels worthwhile to me, I bite. (As of this writing, they actually have bundle of some textures, fonts, and other assets available for $2)

3. A PRIMER ON DIFFERENT KINDS OF TYPEFACES

So most people are probably already aware of the categories of Serif, Sans Serif, and Display fonts. But you can split Serif and Sans Serifs up into further categories.

Here are four kinds of Serifs: Humanist, Transitional, Modern, and Slab.

The most immediate difference between these types of serifs is the stroke widths.

If you look at the modern/didone serif Bodoni, the horizontal strokes are hairline thin, and the vertical strokes are very thick. Modern/Didone typefaces are characterized by this extreme contrast in their stroke widths, and typically have a perfectly vertical axis (meaning the narrowest parts of the strokes are at the exact top and bottom of the letterform, as illustrated by the green dotted line). These features give them a bold, modern, and stylish feel.

The humanist serif Minion has the least contrast in its stroke widths, and has a diagonal stress (again, see the green dotted line). These features make them easy on the eyes and well-suited for paragraphs of text and small font sizes. Humanist typefaces most closely resemble calligraphy, and thus have an elegant, classic feel.

Transitional serifs are, well... transitional. They have more stroke width contrast than humanist serifs, but not quite enough to be considered modern/didone, and may or may not have an angled stress. Their ‘voice’ is more neutral, academic, and timeless.

Slabs Serifs, as the name suggests, are kinda blocky. The stroke widths are generally very solid and consistent, and the actual serifs (or ‘feet’) are... y’know. Fat blocks. It makes these typefaces feel more casual, more down-to-earth, approachable, and perhaps playful? A lil rebellious, even?

So with that out of the way, here are some different types of Sans Serifs: (There’s a point to all of this, I swear.)

Unlike Humanist Serifs, Humanist Sans Serifs actually have the most contrast in their stroke widths. In the above image, this is most apparent on the lowercase ‘a’. Again, this feature makes humanist sans serifs easy on the eyes and optimal for paragraphs of text. Compared to other sans serifs, they tend to have a more casual and approachable personality.

Transitional Sans Serifs will have little to no stroke width contrast. They maintain their readability at small sizes, and their ‘voice’ is very neutral, which makes them easy to use in a wide variety of designs. There’s a reason Helvetica is the go-to for many a graphic designer: it, along with many other Grotesks/Gothics, almost never feels out of place. They’re the chameleons of fonts. They’re versatile. Invisible. Carbon-neutral.

Geometric Sans Serifs, as the name suggests, are typefaces whose letterforms are based on geometry. O's and C's that are (mostly) perfectly circular, V's, W's and M's with sharp, consistent angles. They generally have very consistent stroke widths, but the harsh angles make them poorly suited to paragraphs of text. They feel modern, technical, and stylish.

4. CHOOSING THE RIGHT FONT

(We are now arriving at the point.)

Here are some questions to ask yourself before choosing a font:

How much text do I have?

If you have a lot of text, you’ll want something that’s easy on the eyes for reading. Aim for things with mild stroke contrasts and favor things with a diagonal axis. Basically, you can’t go wrong with a humanist typeface here-- be it serif or sans serif.

Now, for graphics and gifs, you’ll probably have a lot of text almost... never. But if you’re ever designing something that does (like a magazine spread, or a brochure), it’s something to consider.

How much space do I have?

Let’s say you’re giffing a scene and you gotta cram a long caption onto a tiny 278px wide gif. You could just make the font size super tiny, sure. OR, you could look for a font with a narrow character width. A nice, robust type family will usually include Condensed or even Super and Ultra Condensed versions of the font, which will be much better suited to that purpose.

In these cases, you’ll probably want to avoid geometric sans serifs since those circular forms are very wide, relatively speaking. But some geometric type families (such as Futura) do have Condensed varieties:

How large or small does the text need to be? (or do I want it to be?)

When your text is large, you can kinda go nuts and do whatever without worrying about anything getting hard to read. But there are two things to consider when you’re using a small font size, be it out of necessity or For the Aesthetique™--

stroke width contrast: At small font sizes, typefaces with consistent stroke widths are going to maintain their readability best-- so steer clear of Modern/Didone serifs, and tread carefully around Transitional Serifs. If you’re itching to use a Serif, you’ll want to look for a humanist/traditional/old style one. If you’re super attached to a modern/didone serif for a design (as I often am) understand you’re gonna have to compromise a bit and use a larger font size for it.

For sans serifs, both Transitional and Modern types will have nice, solid strokes that won’t get lost at small sizes.

x-height: A typeface's x-height refers literally to the height of the lowercase 'x'. But in more practical terms, it's the ratio of the heights of lowercase vs uppercase letters. If you plan on using all caps, this won't matter much (if at all), but if you will be using lowercase letters, a typeface with a more generous x-height will be easier to read at small sizes than a typeface with a small one.

Generally, Transitional/Grotesk/Gothic Sans-serifs will have the most generous x-heights (for example, see Helvetica). But x-heights vary a lot even within subcategories of typefaces, so be mindful of them!

Speaking of all these metrics... one of the things that makes the Premium version of FontBase well worth my $3 a month? The Super Search feature:

I can just... highlight segments of those histogram chart things on the right to filter out fonts that don’t have the contrast, weight, character width, or x-height I’m looking for. Like magic. #blessed

What ‘voice’ do I want to project?

I mentioned earlier how different styles of typefaces have different ‘personalities’. If you’re not sure whether to go with a Humanist or a Transitional Serif, remember that humanist ones tend to feel more elegant, more classic, more intimate. That Transitional ones tend to feel more objective, more confident, more business-like. Which makes more sense for your design?

After you’ve narrowed down your options with the above considerations, then you can start to be really subjective. Follow your heart. Pick whichever one has that certain je ne sais quoi. Or the one that has the ‘Q’ with the coolest tail. The one that just makes you feel a certain kinda way. Because it’s art. It’s design. Have fun with it.

5. SOME OF MY PERSONAL FAVORITE FONTS

So... my taste in typefaces is pretty conservative. I don’t really use handwriting, script, or display fonts. When I do, I tend to use them just the one (1) time and forget about their existence immediately afterward. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Most of these are tried and true Classics you may have already heard of, and some of them might even be default fonts bundled with your operating system. If not, be very careful looking for them, because it would be a terrible, horrible shame if you were to get your hands on one of the many freely available bootlegs of some of these typefaces... :/

With all these lined up together, you can get a better sense of how varied the x-heights can be from one typeface to another. For a particularly stark example, see Mrs Eaves vs Playfair Display, or Montserrat vs Neutra Text.

💥 Mask:

Mostly eva foam; heat formed around a cast of my head

Foam sealed with Flexbond, painted with Angelus acrylics and finished with a satin acrylic clear coat

Hair dome is detachable from the mask (3 velcro+elastic attachments)

Pony tail section is detachable from the dome via velcro inside the grey band on one half of the circle; an LED battery pack for the two pony tail lights is stored inside that band in the other half of the space

Flickering LEDs are from those LED candles; I've removed the LEDs and re-wired them to some compact, thin button cell battery holders

Orange plastic sheet (document folder) for the lenses - sprayed with “CLEAR DE-FOG”

Vision is fairly limited, especially in low light with the LEDs on

RE: Breathing: There are gaps in the mouth hay and between the hay dome and mask at the top

💥 Tyre, back mount and logs:

Hay is individual strips of eva foam glued on covering a foam base

Back panel removable, small items can be stored inside

Spikes are eva foam and worbla, attached with bolts and wing nuts (ended up being a hassle to screw them on/off, I should have tried something else)

Tyre attaches with a wooden peg that fits into a slot on the back mount - Apoxie Sculpt molded around the peg inside a PVC end cap which is bolted to the mount

Back mount is worbla heat-shaped over a bowl and eva foam

Logs rest on a metal bracket bolted inside the back mount, there is also webbing bolted on which wraps around the logs to secure them

Logs are eva foam cylinders with scored and heated detailing

Logs can be dissembled for travel with a threaded plastic rod inside

Rope has been tinted with some acrylic paint

💥 Singlet and waist wrap:

Cotton flannel 'buffalo check plaid' found on Etsy

Started the pattern by cutting up a cheap plain singlet, transferred that basic shape to paper then drafted the rest

Shoulder straps have strips of eva foam inside to make them sturdier, these are embedded inside the clips

Clips and patches are eva foam

I ironed on fusable interfacing to the patches and clips to try sewing them on but had some issues with the edges not sitting flat so finished them off with some glue

Darkened areas of the flannel with some watered down fabric paint, sponged on

Bottom raw edges were coated with 'Fray Stoppa'

Rivets are googly eyes

Waist wrap fabric is from the right pant leg cut off! The original colour of the pants is close enough and has a nice linen texture; dug out some fabric from my stash for the backing to make it sturdier; features sewn-in snaps

Attached a clip and keyring combo to the rope with electrical tape

💥 Arm armour and hand:

Eva foam and worbla for fingers

Hand patterned by drawing onto a disposable rubber glove (should have allowed for wider gaps for better flexibility, also probably should have used eva foam instead)

Hand pieces completely separate from black under glove, joined together by elastic (this ended up being annoying to put on/take off, next time I make gloves I’ll try attaching the pieces directly to a glove)

💥 Pants:

Started off as 2nd hand linen pants found on Ebay; dyed darker brown

Rope and patches hot glued on

Weathered with some fabric paint

Hay thigh held in place with elastic that loops around a belt

💥 Peg leg:

Pine furniture leg

Upper section is eva foam construction, front and sides only

When posing my knee rests on a support inside - dowel screwed into the leg, part of a knee pad screwed into dowel (ended up trimming most of it off as it was too bulky), added some worbla to make a curve then some foam on top for padding

Elastic straps attached to secure it around my leg, also one longer strip goes up to my belt and loops around tightly

💥 Red glove:

Started as a yellow leather glove bought on Ebay

Patterned a gauntlet cuff, made with eva foam; other details also foam

Painted with Angelus acrylics

Traced around my foot to make a pattern, added a bit extra all the way around to ensure my foot doesn’t touch the ground

Clear PETG base cut with small holes drilled in for the straps (two overlapping like a cross at the middle, another over my big toe)

Eva foam added for padding/comfort, cut slightly smaller than foot, matching holes, taped on

Mesh fabric straps threaded through the holes, ends taped down (holes kept the fabric tight)

Fiebre amarilla

¨Los Simpson¨ vieron la luz por primera vez en 1987, de la mano de su creador, Matt Groening, como segmentos cortos dentro del show de Tracey Ullman. Pronto la audiencia reclamó mas contenido y Fox adaptó en 1989 este formato en una serie de una media hora de duración, siendo el primer paso de una acción transmedia convirtiéndose en un producto de alcance global que permanece aún en nuestros días, y, al menos, así será hasta 2021, año en el que finaliza el contrato con la Fox cuando nuestra familia amarilla tenga 32 temporadas.

Lo cierto es que ¨Los Simpson¨ es una serie de culto y un exponente indiscutible de la cultura de masas. Son la viva imagen de la típica familia norteamericana llevada a los máximos extremos: un padre torpe e inculto, una orgullosa ama de casa, un hijo desobediente y travieso, una hija intelectualmente ignorada y un bebe hiperactivo.

Los Simpson han sabido desde el primer minuto ganarse a los espectadores y han demostrado que la idea de que el cine de animación esta reservada para un público infantil es errónea.

Springfield es uno de los puntos de conexión que en mi opinión más atractiva hace la serie, cada capítulo no sigue un hilo argumental pero el pueblo siempre es el mismo, eso como espectador me ha provocado siempre tenerle un cariño especial, los creadores son conscientes de ello y es por ello en el año 2008 inauguraron ¨The Simpsons Ride¨ un parque temático donde se recrea a tamaño real los lugares más emblemáticos de la ciudad, un lugar donde se hace posible la interacción con los personajes (eso si ficticios), el único lugar del mundo donde poder tomar una cerveza Duff en la mismísima taberna de Moe o comprar productos de la saga y demás merchandising en el Kwik-E-Mart, el famoso Badulaque de Apu.

Además de la reproducción de un corto de aproximadamente seis minutos en 3D, ampliando aún más esta experiencia inmersiva.

Como dato curioso de este pueblo, bajo el nombre de Springfield se encuentran numerosas teorías, algunos dicen que esta basado en un pueblo de Oregon, lugar de nacimiento del creador, lo cierto es que a lo largo y ancho de los Estados Unidos existen exactamente 35 pueblos con ese mismo nombre, Matt Groening le resulto cómico este hecho y lo dejó así para que ¨muchos espectadores se sintieran identificados¨, de nuevo tratándoles de adentrar en la saga.

Un hecho indiscutible del éxito de la serie, además del talento de sus creadores, ha sido el ¨matrimonio perfecto¨ que ha creado con la cadena Fox. Lo cierto es que Fox ha contribuido mucho en el éxito de Los Simpson, impulsando distintas iniciativas encaminadas a conectar a los espectadores. Una de las más llamativas tienen que ver con las famosas cabeceras, Matt Groening ha creado una diferente para cada capítulo, enseñando mil y una maneras de sentarse en un sofá para disfrutar de la serie. La cadena Fox, lanzó en 2012 una campaña promocional en la que invitaba a los espectadores a crear una de las cabeceras para un capítulo, la más creativa sería emitida, este concurso fue denominado ¨couch gag¨.

El usuario debía ingresar a la sección del concurso en la página de facebook de la serie y allí era llevado a la sección del concurso en la página web de Fox en inglés. Una vez ubicado allí aparecen los pasos a seguir: Escribir la idea en menos de 100 palabras en el espacio que se brinda. Tras una larga lista de cabeceras se escogió la ganadora.

El vigésimo aniversario de Los Simpson también estuvo acompañado de un concurso organizado por Fox, mediante la llamada ¨caza de referencias¨. Fox creó un juego en el que dejarían referencias, tributos y pistas sobre Los Simpson en los programas de prime-time y sus anuncios.

El ganador recibió el pack de premios definitivo de Los Simpson, incluyendo un viaje para dos a Los Ángeles para asistir a una lectura de guión de uno de los capítulos con los galardonados actores y productores de la serie, un sistema de entretenimiento doméstico, merchandising variado y entradas para el parque Universal Studios Hollywood, hogar del ya mencionado ¨The Simpsons Ride¨.

Homer, protagonista de la serie, traspasó la pantalla para conectar con los espectadores en una iniciativa de nuevo de Fox, en la que el personaje contestaba en directo las preguntas de los fans a través del hastag #Homerlive en Twitter, este acontecimiento tuvo una gran acogida y fueron muchas las preguntas que recibieron.

En 2007, Los Simpson continuaron su expansión y se adentraron en un sector actualmente al alza como son los videojuegos, en septiembre del mencionado año salía al mercado ¨Los Simpson-El videojuego¨, para la ya obsoleta Playstation 3 y su vecino y competidor Xbox.

Estaban inspirados en la serie que bien es cierto expandieron la historia contada y fueron muy bien acogidos por los más jóvenes seguidores de la serie.

De nuevo vinculado a los videojuegos se encuentran las aplicaciones para móvil, de la mano del gigante ¨Electronic Arts¨ lanzarón el juego para telefonía inteligente llamado "The Simpsons Tapped Out".

Se presenta un momento posterior a una explosión nuclear en Springfield. El usuario debe reconstruir la ciudad usando rosquillas virtuales como moneda de cambio. Pero estas rosquillas se pueden adquirir con dinero real, y es así cómo Electronic Arts ha recaudado nada menos que 23 millones de dólares (Unos 17 millones de euros). Este modo de recaudación está en auge en el mercado de los contenidos para móviles y es denominado in-app purchase. Cabe destacar que la aplicación es completamente gratuita.

Reconozco haber jugado a esta aplicación hace unos años y he de decir que me sorprendió la calidad gráfica, los dibujos y la fluidez con la que se mueven los personajes. Te permiten estar conectados con el ¨universo Simpson¨ todo el tiempo que el usuario desee.

Ninguna otra serie televisiva de dibujos animados ha producido relecturas de textos artísticos como lo han hecho ellos, representando a William Shakespeare, Edgar Allan Poe, Tennessee Williams, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick y Francis Ford Coppola, entre otros. Obras tales como Hamlet, El Cuervo, Un Tranvía Llamado Deseo, El Ciudadano, La Ventana Indiscreta, El Resplandor o Drácula han sido bienvenidas por las masas, aplaudidas por los cinéfilos y admiradas por los intelectuales. Cabe mencionar estos ¨guiños¨ artísticos por parte de los creadores más aún cuando hemos sido espectadores de obras literarias de la saga en diferentes formatos, tanto cómics como libros. Son innumerables las ediciones que existen pero mencionaré algunas de ellas: ¨Bart Simpson: Guía para la vida¨, ¨Guía de Springfield¨ y en mi opinión el mas reseñable ¨Simpson Comic¨ desde 1993 existen estos cómics con una tirada mensual, son artículos de autentico coleccionista y un auténtico tesoro para los amantes de la saga en los que además cuentan historias tanto paralelas como exclusivas de la serie.

Uno de los elementos más reclamados por todos los fieles de la serie ha sido la película. El largometraje dirigido por David Silverman comienza su desarrollo en 2001, junto a un equipo de redacción encargado de los primeros guiones de la serie, entre quienes se encontraba Matt Groening. El guión de la película fue reescrito más de un centenar de veces y tuvo una espectacular acogida, aparecen nuevos personajes y debido al formato de largometraje las secuencias y las tramas son mas complejas. La película, como he mencionado antes gira en torno al querido Springfield y es que el gobierno decide cerrar el pueblo con una cúpula acristalada algo que no reciben bien en el pueblo.

Me gustaría destacar también, el merchandising que hay detrás de esta serie, desde juegos de mesa: Monopoly, The Simpsons: Cluedo, The Simpsons: Scrabble, un parchís y un ajedrez en 3D, pasando por material de oficina e incluso ropa.

Son innumerables la cantidad de acciones transmedia que durante sus mas de 30 años de existencia Fox junto con sus creadores han logrado levar a cabo. A lo largo este pequeño ¨artículo¨ he tratado de explicar y mencionar las que a mi parecer más llamativas resultan, me parece notable la adaptación camaleónica que han tenido a los diferentes medios y plataformas en las que se han introducido y espero que esta aventura dure porque no, 30 años más.

Cómo mandar las muestras serológicas al laboratorio en Kansas, EEUU?

Hace un tiempo escribí un artículo detallando todos los pasos que tuvimos que hacer para poder viajar con Pancha a Australia. Una de las primeras cosas que fue necesaria completar, era el envío de la muestra serológica (una muestra de sangre canina) a Estados Unidos. Como los australianos, también los yanquies son muy particulares y estrictos sobre la manera que hay que hacer ese trámite. Basta con solamente pensar en todas las cosas bizarras con las que los agentes aduaneros se deben encontrar día tras día, para entender por que unas muestras con sangre desconocida les pueden generar desconfianza. En estos paises, los oficiales en la frontera tienen bastante poder de desición y pueden mandar a investigar o destruír cualquier cosa que les genere sospechas. Para evitar que toda la toma de muestra, la movilización de elementos y gasto de plata haya sido en vano, hay que conseguir un certificado de la Senasa, más un papel para la aduana estadounidense y pegarlos afuera de la caja (de eso más adelante).

Pero más allá de las restricciones aduaneros, también hay que tomar muchos cuidados a la hora de guardar y envolver la muestra, ya que es algo biológico y está muy suceptible a diferentes factores ambientales, como la temperatura o el tiempo que ha transcurrido desde la extracción. E cualquier veterinaria seguramente les pueden asesorar más en detalle sobre el correcto cuidado de la muestra.

Por todo lo descripto anteriormente, en el laboratorio de Kansas también son bastante particulares sobre como tienen que llegar las muestras para que ellos las puedan procesar. A continuación les dejo algunas fotos, documentos (perdón que sean en parte censurados, pero no quise que la vayan a hostigar a nuestra vete o que me carguen la tarjeta de crédito jaja) e indicaciones sobre como todo funcionó para nosotros. Sé, que el proceso de tratar de viajar con una mascota de por sí es muy estresante y está bueno tratar de simplificar un poco a tanta burocrasía y normativas.

Pero por qué justo hay que mandar todo es Estados Unidos? No hay nada más cerca? Por ejemplo, en Córdoba hay un laboratorio veterinario muy bueno, además tiene laboratorios la Senasa misma, pero el obstáculo más grande de por que no los pueden utilizar es que las autoridades australianas no los reconocen como laboratorios que estén a sus estándares. Los labs argentinos a veces no hacen algunos de los testeos, por falta de insumos, agentes activos o por poca demanda. Además, la parte australiana quiere asegurarse que todos los análisis están hechos bajo las mismas normas de trabajo, técnica y calidad, como en los laboratorios de ellos. En 2017, cuando nosotros estabamos haciendo estos trámites, se estaba hablando de la construcción de un lab en Chile y, creo que, otro ya en funcionamiento en Sudáfrica, pero después de una búsqueda, la más accesible para nosotros seguía siendo el de Kansas, EEUU. Vale averiguar con la Senasa o Ministerio de Agricultura de Australia, por si la situación en estos años ha cambiado.

La muestra

Supongo que ya están al tanto que el primer paso es colocarle la vacuna antirrábica a la mascota (la vacuna tiene que ser colocada después del microchip, sino no vale para las autoridades australianas). Después, desde la colocación de la vacuna, hay que esperar 21 dias para darle al organismo canino algo de tiempo para generar unos cuantos anticuerpos. El test justo se fija en la capacidad del perro de crear esos anticuerpos. Mejor y más saludable está el animal, más anticuerpos crea, más débil está - menos. Al cumplir ese tiempo de espera de 3 semanas, ya se puede extraer la muestra serológica para mandarlo a Estados Unidos.

Primero hay que pactar un turno para la extracción en una vete. A esa cita también hay que invitar al representante de la Senasa. También hay que llevar a la cita algunos papeles, para que los firme el veterinario (más de eso en parte de los papeles). De la vete lo que van a obtener es un tubito con la muestra serológica. Así es como se tendría que ver el tubo. Ellos precisan entre 1-2 ml de serum para poder realizar el test. En el caso de los anticuerpos antirrábicos, se manda una sóla muestra por animal y el tubo tiene que tener el número del microchip de la mascota (y no puede ser cualquier tubo de la abuela, tiene que ser uno especial - las vetes seguramente que tienen los correctos). Al colocarle el microchip a Pancha nos dieron varios stickers con un código de barra y el número, así que utilizamos uno de estos para identificar el tubo. Si es un papelito escrito a mano, cubrirlo además con cinta adhesiva para evitar que la humedad torne la etiqueta ilegible (otra vez, si no pueden identificar a que animal o “cliente” pertenece que tubo, no lo procesan y hay que hacer todo el trámite de nuevo).

El tubo en sí tiene que ir adentro de una bolsita ziplock (si hay que mandar más de un tubito, ponerlos todos por separado). Agregar a la bolsa también una servilleta absorbente por si hay algún derrame o fuga.

Cómo se sabe de antemano la fecha de la extracción y, por ende, el envío, recomiendo ya unos dias antés ir juntando todas las materiales necesarias, porque una vez que tengan el serum en sus manos, lo mejor es enviarlo lo antés posible. Acá en la mesa se puede ver básicamente todas las cosas que hacen falta - la cajita de tergopol, packs de frío, bolsas ziplock de diferentes tamaños, la muestra, papeles importantes para adentro y afuera de la caja, una caja exterior de cartón, papel madera para cubrirlo, tijeras y cinta adhesiva-

Se recomienda usar una caja tipo de helado que sea de tergopol porque encapsulan mejor el frío que cajas de carton, además no se deshacen con humedad. Lo ideal sería pedir una de estas en alguna vete, pero también puede ser una caja de helado (de los más grandes, porque por su forma redonda después es bastante dificil hacer entrar todo lo necesario). Además, si reutilizan alguna caja de helado, fijense que esté limpio. Bajo ningúna manera manden la muestra con un poco de sambayon o dulce de leche granizado! El laboratorio no se fija en si la caja ha sido utilizada antés, mientras esté limpia. Además de la muestra serológica que va con una servilleta común en bolsa ziplock, también tienen que entrar unos 2 packs de gel congelados o fríos. Eso es algo que se puede conseguir ya unos dias antés de la extracción y tener listo en la heladera.

Armando la caja...

Papeles, papeles, papeles

A la caja también tienen que entrar varios papeles muy importantes (todos originales). Hay que poner en un folio o, mejor todavía, bolsita ziplock grande el formulario “FAVN Report Form” bajado de la página del lab y llenado en la veterinaria. Para suerte hay ejemplos en español en su página web, así que nosotros directamente mandamos uno en ese idioma.

Con el papel anterior rellenado y firmado por el vete que haya hecho la extracción, hay que ir a la Senasa (si les pasó como a nosotros y el vete oficial de ellos no pudo venir a presenciar la extracción), donde ellos dan un certificado suyo que afirma que la info es correcta, que la extracción se hizo respetando todas las normas y que la muestra no posee ningún peligro y puede ser enviado a otro país. Recomiendo sacar copias de esos papeles y ponerlos adentro como también pegarlos afuera de la caja.

También tiene que ir adentro de la caja otro formulario con los datos de la tarjeta de crédito, para que ellos al recibir la muestra lo puedan cobrar (obvio, que es lo primero que hacen).

Si quieren recibir los resultados del análisis en papel, también hay que autorizar al lab para que lo manden através de FedEx (hay que pagar extra).

Normalmente el laboratorio no toma muestras de personas particulares, sino interactúa con agencias o veterinarias directamente. En nuestro caso, organizamos todo e hicimos los preparativos, pero en nombre de la veterinaria, usando su dirección, correo electrónico, etc. Por eso, el laboratorio también manda los resultados a la vete directamente, salvo que envíen en la caja una cartita en nombre de ellos, de que el dueño de la mascota puede recibir los resultados. Nosotros hicimos una cartita así y funcionó.

Un tip a tener en cuenta es que en Estados Unidos la forma de escribir la fecha es distina que en Argentina o Australia. Ellos en la fecha primero marcan el mes, después el día y, como último, el año.

Otro papel que tiene que ir pegado afuera de la caja es este - una declaración de inocuidad para la aduana de EEUU. Ese papel lo imprimimos directamente desde la página web del laboratorio. De este modo los oficiales aduaneros saben sin abrir el paquete que es lo que contiene y con que objetivo lo estan queriendo entrar a su país. Como ya lo mencioné, esos agentes tienen poder de sobra y pueden, básicamente, hacer lo que quieren con el envío, pero nosotros nunca tuvimos ningún problema.

Típico, yo ahogando en papeles, haciendo trámites y Pancha seguramente muy cómoda durmiendo una siesta por ahí... :’)

El envío

Durante las preparaciones nuestros ánimos y ansisas estaban muy a flor de piel, así que fuimos a preguntarles a DHL como hay que hacer para enviar todo. Nos dijeron que el paquete normalmente llega entre 3 a 5 dias hábiles y el camión deja el sucursal de Córdoba todos los dias a las 17 horas, así que nos dijeron que el mejor momento para mandarlo sería un lunes a las cinco de la tarde (para que salga lo antés posible). Obviamente, no te pueden garantizar que no haya demoras en la frontera o por huelgas (en la segunda vuelta con los otros análisis nos pasó justo eso).

Así que organizamos la extracción justo para un lunes a las 13hrs. Después de eso fuimos hasta la Senasa para conseguir el certificado de ellos. Al volver a casa nos pusimos a terminar de llenar el resto de los papeles y a armar el envío. Llegamos a la sucursal de DHL unos minutitos antés de las 5 de la tarde y había un montón de gente. En el local diminuto había, sin exagerar, unas 30 personas! Al parecer medio Córdoba quiso enviar algo justo el día que teníamos que ir nosotros! Al frente estaban unas mujeres con 3 sobres enormes, cada uno conteniendo muchas cartas. Por lo que se escuchaba estaban enviando uno de los sobres al Palacio de Justicia, otro para Macri y el tercer sobre iba para Putin. Directamente le avisaron a la chica de atención así: “Quiero enviar esto para el presidente de Rusia”. Todavía no se como la persona que las atendió lo pudo hacer con una cara seria. Estoy bastante segura que esas cartas, si llegan a su destinatario, en Moscú absolutamente nadie los va a leer... En un momento entre el mar de gente que había en el local, las chicas vieron a unos conocidos y los hicieron pasar. No les puedo llegar a describir el aire de odio que se respiraba ahí en ese momento - todos estabamos apurados, queriendo terminar con los trámites e irnos a casa. Tuvimos que esperar unos 30 minutos, terminar de embalar el paquete contra el reloj (porque casí casí ya se retiraba el camión). Para suerte salió todo bien. Nosotros pegamos los papeles pendientes a la caja, ellos de su parte agregaron unos cuantos más. Por el horario, nuestro paquete fue directamente del mostrador al camión.

A partir de ahí empezó la tremenda espera y nervios. Para suerte pudimos rastrearlo online, amenudo varias veces por día (la manija que teníamos jaja). Al final el paquete tardó una semana exacta en llegar a Kansas. Primero tuvo que pasar por Buenos Aires y Madrid. Eso ya nos levantó sospechas, ya que España no quedaba ni cerca de donde lo teniamos que mandar!!! El paquete se quedó ahí por varios dias hasta que de repente pudimos leer que había llegado a Miami. Por unos minutos apareció un cartelito que decía que requieren más información sobre el envío, pero tan rápido como apareció, también se fue y el paquete llegó a Cincinnati, Ohio. La mañana siguiente la muestra ya estaba en el laboratorio de Kansas. Todavía teníamos la duda de si todo había llegado entero y sin problemas, pero unos dias más tarde ya me descontaron la plata de la cuenta, así que suponíamos que todo estaba en orden.

El sistema para rastrear paquetes que tiene DHL es muy bueno y detallado.

El resultado

Una vez que ya estaba el envío, había que seguir esperando, pero esta vez por los resultados de los análisis. En la página del lab avisaba que los tests podían tardar entre 3-4 semanas. Estuvimos esperando todo el mes de abril. En los últimos dias ya nos pusimos un poco inquietos. El viernes 28, que era también el último día hábil del mes, estabamos recién desayunando con Vic cuando nos llegó un sobre debajo de la puerta. Estaba todo raro y en inglés. Automáticamente pensé que era el laboratorio, así que ni me detuve a leer que decía. Abrí todo muy cuidadosamente, para no arrugar ni romper nada. Mis cuidados duraron hasta que logré abrir el sobre y ví una tarjeta naranja adentro. “Que bizarro todo esto,” pensé, hasta que me dí cuenta que era de una amiga de Londres que me había mandado una tarjeta anticipada por cumpleaños! :) Así que imaginen lo obsesionados que estabamos por ya tener los resultados.

Ese mismo día me iba a juntar en casa con una amiga. A la vez tenía tres cachorros lactantes a mi cuidado. Cerca de la hora que iba a llegar mi amiga, los bebitos se despertaron, quisieron tomar la mamadera e hicieron un desastre en su cajita. En medio de todo ese caos escuché que alguien tocaba el timbre. Yendo a atender pensaba que mal momento justo cuando al comunicador un pibe dice que es de FedEx. Que felicidad, por fin están los resultados!

Era la hora de la verdad. Según los reglamentos, la muestra de Pancha tenía que ser superior a 0.5IU. Pero en el papel que saqué del sobre decía 3,46IU :O... Que felicidad, por dios, cuando nos dimos cuentra que era un resultado super bueno! Sentímos mucho alivio, que el primer paso importante nos había salido bien. También el resultado nos dejó con una sensación muy linda - de que algo estabamos haciendo bien, ya que Pancha estaba muy saludable. Hasta varios dias más tarde estabamos sonriendo de oreja a oreja.. :)

También nos mandaron esos dos papeles “mágicos” certificando los resultados de Pancha.

En principio, hacer ese trámite fue bastante estresante, por nervios y miedo de que las cosas salgan mal, pero en realidad, si se sigue las reglas de pie a letra, no hay nada complicado!

En la página web de la Universidad de Kansas tiene un muy buen checklist para usarlo antés de despachar la muestra.

Lo que si hay que tener de sobra en ese proceso es el tiempo. Todo ese trámite a nosotros nos tomó unos 2 meses. La mayoría de eso era esperar - para poder sacar la muestra y, después, tener los resultados. Pero hay que aguantarlo, ya que en el mientras tanto no se puede avanzar con ninguna otra cosa. Pero una vez que han cumplido con ese requisito, ya pueden sacar el permiso de importación para su mascota, lo que vendría que ser como una visa para ellos :)
