“What the bloody hell are you doing?” asked Draco.
Granger collapsed out of the horrid tangle and found her knees. “Yoga. What the bloody hell are you doing?”
Draco had seen this mysterious term on Granger’s schedule. “That’s yoga? What kind of self-inflicted martyrdom–?”
Now that he had ascertained that there was no immediate threat, Draco could take in the scene. There were candles flickering in a corner and soft music was playing. Granger was outfitted in those ridiculously form-fitting Muggle clothes, khaki green this time. Her hair was pulled into a French braid, thick as Draco’s wrist.
Granger was looking at him like he was an absolute bellend. “I was trying a Taraksvasana–”
“A what?”
“A scorpion handstand – I’ve been working towards it for weeks, and I almost had it, until you came in like a bolt from the blue and frightened me out of my wits!”
Draco was feeling increasingly foolish. He pulled his cloak closed to cover his pyjamas. There was little he could do about his bare feet. “What, pray, is the point of yoga?”
“Flexibility. Strength. Balance. Finding serenity.”
Draco eyed Granger with cynicism at the last bit. “Have you found it?”
“No,” said Granger. She got to her feet with evident irritation. “Kindly recalibrate your ring so you only show up in a real crisis.”
She flicked the Elektik lights on. Her cheeks were flushed. A trickle of perspiration was running down her neck. Her chest still heaved from her exertion. Draco could smell salt, female sweat, and the burnt wick of a candle.
His idiot brain took this image and immediately created several new neural pathways that had never existed previously, connecting the idea of Granger with the concept of sexy.” - Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love, Chapter 6: Finding Serenity, by @isthisselfcare

“Two sunsets in one day,” said Granger with a sigh. “Rather magical, isn't it?”
And she stood in the red light, rather magical herself, as though touched by fire. And gloaming fell upon the great city of London, and the sky turned to purple, and then, finally, came night. Draco had a glimpse of an enchantress with a cascade of hair tumbling down her back – and then she twisted it up, and she was Granger again.

Hello friends. Yet another post on a topic literally no one here signed up for but the blog is about my hyperfixation of the month so here we are
I have been reading dramione. I know in my last post i said i was ki da over dramione after a couple of fics because i find the pairing too toxic but i only kinda lied because i have just reread the like 4 dramione fics i found and liked and now i will review them. Technically i have read/started more than 4 but i won't be commenting on fics i didn't like because that isn't fair to the writers.
The first one was manacled. Which i know what a fucking reintroduction to the fandom. But i am no young newbie. I used to read and rewrite A LOT of harry potter fic and while its still fuck jk rowling, she doesn't financially benefit from fic and i heard years ago that she doesn't like fic so. I hope its all a big fuck u to her.
Anyway, manacled. Wow!!! What the fuck???? It has lived rent free in my head ever since. I literally cannot stop thinking about it. If ever i reentered the harry potter fic world let it be known that it would be so i can write fanfic of this fanfic. A couple points - manacled is kinda overly long and would benefit from an editor/beta reader, but I heard senlinyu wrote it on her phone while nursing a baby and just???? Idk what her day job is, but that woman needs to be doing creative writing mfas, writers workshops, residencies, whatever. That is extraordinary creative talent.
I think the first part with hermione in the manor was a bit overly long and too torture porn ish. A lot of the scenes bordered into the unnecessarily gratituous. But overall, it was well plotted, well written, and gut wrenching. The last section takes my breath away
The second fic i read was Remain Nameless. And while i kinda don't love smut (it makes me a little uncomfy) i think remain nameless is a perfrct example of fanfic as a genre. Within fic, there are obviously genres, but there are stylistic elements and things that I think makes fanfiction a genre in itself. Remain Nameless is an exploration of character that goes beyond the confines of conventional or traditionally publish-able story structure. It is too long, too drawn out, too indulgent to be a traditionally published story. If i swap out the names and details in Manacled or Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in love (up next) out, its a probably close to a stand alone novel, but Remain Nameless relies on you knowing and already caring about Draco and Hermione. I don't mean that disparagingly at all, I just think sometimes people don't realize that fanfic should be different from traditionally published novels and that is a benefit of the genre. I think Remain Nameless is great. Its an indulgent, fluffy read that takes two broken people and slowly puts them back together again. Its like a hug in book format.
My next one is DMATMOOBIL!! I loved this one. And the author??? You cannot convince me that this fic was not written by someone with literal years of publishing experience in contemporary romance. No way. Its too good. Not just in a good writing way. Manacled is good in an unfiltered, raw talent way, but DMATMOOBIL is polished. The plot is perfectly structured and then each chapter within that is perfectly structured. I loved it. It wad witty, funny, heartfelt, and exciting. Not sure what more I can say about it. It reads like published fiction both in its polish and readability, and I think of all the fics I read has the best worldbuilding. It is truly exciting to read about the possibilities of magical and muggle science colliding in this book and bringing their world to the 21st century.
The last fic i read was Green Light by SereneMusafir. I thought it was so good but would benefit from being split into two maybe even three books. Green Light features a journalist coming to interview Draco many years after the events of the book, so that kinda complicates splitting it up, but as it stands, the story parts are too vast and thematically disparate to be one book. The first part has Draco and Hermione on an expedition in the desert to find a archeological myth and the writing is extraoridinary. Its poetic and cinematic. But I think at times it all tries to do too much. Like I said, the whole thing needs to be split up but each chapter also needs to be a bit shorter. Again, I don't mean cutting content, but rather restructuring. As it is, I read an incredible scene, but then there's like 5 more scenes of something else, and by the time I'm at the end of the chapter, I've kinda forgotten what amazing prose I read earlier on. Things get lost in this way. Beautiful passages buried.
I think two or three books would also allow each thematic section to be explored better. Idk i thought about this one a lot. I likely will not reread Green Light the way I have reread the others on this list, but other than Manacled, it is the one I think about most. Its the most ambitious plot wise and it kinda got lost in that ambition but I think it has so much potential and was over all very good.
Anyway. That is the end to this book review no one asked for. I will likely not be reading more dramione. So here ends that brief of excellent phase.

“He loved her. He kissed this realisation into her neck. He was light-headed with it, sick with it, afloat with it.
The dinner gong rang.
After the stupidities – gorgeous, bright, shining stupidities – Draco found that there was love in everything he did. It was in the door he held open for her as they left the library, in the brush of his shoulder against hers in the corridor, in his walking her to the dining room.
There was desperate love when he stood still for her to fix his collar. There was tender love when he pulled out her chair. There was aching love in pouring her a glass of wine. When he, like a fool, reached to push a curl of her hair behind her ear, it was wrecked with love.
He teased her for her small bites because he loved her. He threatened to steal her last profiterole because he loved her. It was why he followed her into crypts – why he wrestled hinds in swamps – why he kissed her scar.
And that pull – that gravitational force – l’appel du vide – was falling into love, over and over again.
At the foot of the stairs, after dinner, there was frightened love in his “Good night,” pulling back on itself, trying to keep itself secret.
His “Sleep well” sounded like “Come here and kiss me again.”
As she went up the stairs, and he watched her ascend, her every step away from him was a heartache.
He ran his hand through his hair and stared at the empty stairs.
He loved her. It was in every embrace, in flights under stars, in the crossing of swords, in secret ballroom dances, in the giving of things, in the life-savings, in the passing of handkerchiefs, the accidental touchings, the arguing about hyphenated surnames, the drunken picnics, the shared cups of tea. He loved her.
She made him understand the word.” - Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love, Chapter 32: A Paedagogical Exchange, by @isthisselfcare

Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love
After taking the flute, she held it at waist height, well away from her face, and turned to chat with Patil.
Patil was distracted by a squabble between Flint and Theo. Granger visibly steeled herself.
Draco watched as she lifted the glass to her face.
She breathed in and looked stricken – as though some ghastly thing had just been confirmed.
She hardly had time to collect herself when Pansy turned to her. “Have you tried yours?”
Granger, tight about the jaw, gave Pansy a restricted sort of smile and took a sip.
“And?” asked Theo.
“Delicious,” said Granger in a strangled voice.
When the group’s focus had moved elsewhere, Granger stared at the flute as though she was pondering spilling its contents onto the floor.
She did not look at Draco.
I made this little fanart inspired by chapter 27: "Theo's party", because that dress deserves a lot of mortifying love.
For you :3 @isthisselfcare

Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love by isthisselfcare on A03
Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars
Synopsis: Hermione straddles the Muggle and Magical worlds as a medical researcher and Healer about to make a big discovery. Draco is an auror assigned to protect her from forces unknown - to both their displeasure. Features a hyper-competent, fiery Hermione and lazy, yet dangerous, Draco. Slow burn.
Major Themes: Forced proximity, slow burn, pining to the MAX, paced perfectly.
Reason for Rating:
- All the characters are so well written and three dimensional (yes, even side characters) that you just feel that they genuinely exist. I find sometimes characters are written as if they know they are in a certain story/genre and in turn I am aware that I am reading. These characters however are so human like that I genuinely got lost in the story because it felt so real. Furthermore, I love competent and intelligent characters. Not that I don’t love a good him or/himbo moment because believe me I do, but with this plot line especially it is so beautiful when the two main characters complete each other intelligently. This is even more well played out when they’re intelligent in different, but complementary ways as in this fic. BTW BIG himbo energy from Harry and Ron in this - as it should be!!
- The story line is chef’s kiss. It is so complex, intriguing, and well-thought out. When I can tell an author put actual RESEARCH into their work I simultaneously die of enthusiasm AND gain 5 years on my life expectancy.
- The pining and tension in this is absolutely unmatched to anything I’ve read before. These two idiots are in love with each other, but refuse to acknowledge it!
- This fic was 100% perfectly paced which I think is hard to do. I kind of can’t stand when a final battle or resolution gets dragged out because I get bored. This is not one of those fics. The resolution takes place and everything that should happen happens without a rush, but also without lasting longer than necessary.
- This point may be interpreted as spoilers so proceed with caution. The #Eventual Smut means exactly what it says and I enjoyed it more than I thought. With most fics I expect smut between the main characters before the resolution happens. This isn’t a need, I just expect it. However, this fic in particular the holding off of smut was exceptional. Especially considering the pacing of the fic, holding us until the end felt right.
Overall: This is a post-war fic in which Draco is assigned to protect Hermione from those wanting to disrupt her research findings. If you enjoy a complex, yet faster paced fic, this covers a well thought-out and expansive story in only 36 chapters. Furthermore, ‘Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love’ perfectly balances lighter themes while reflecting on the darker reality of the past and including some dark characters. It is very much adventure based, but also includes a variety of other scenes that expand on the character’s personalities. It’s very light-hearted, but serious when it needs to be. All the characters are complex and three dimensional so you don’t have to worry about anyone acting so far out of character that it takes you out of the story. I have read this twice since I first read it in January it is THAT good. The only thing that hurts is that this author hasn’t written anything new because I would absolutely devour it.
Again, you can find this on A03 ‘Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love’ by isthisselfcare.
