ARC Review: A Wicked Game by Kate Bateman

4/5. Releases 12/27/2022.

Morgan Davies and Harriet Montgomery have grown up in families that at odds--but while they don't get along, they aren't quite enemies. Before Morgan goes off to sea, Harriet promises him that if he comes back alive, he'll get to give her three kisses--wherever he wants. Years later, he returns after being imprisoned with a whole new perspective. He wants Harriet for his own, not as a friend or an enemy, and he'll use those three kisses as a good little jumping off point for his plans to win her.

So to be super real, this one doesn't have like, a huge PLOTTY PLOT PLOT thing. It's mostly a sexy romantic comedy that focuses on two people who are fun and likable and hot and don't have deep internal issues aside from not quite knowing how to go from friendly rivals to lovers. (I mean, he totally knows how, she's just a bit less experienced.) And normally, I think that would bug me, a supreme lover of angst and fucked upedness and drama. But here? It really didn't. It was pretty delightful. Why?

What Worked:

--Morgan and Harriet have great chemistry and read like two people who've known each other since childhood. And even if they've never been like, confidants, they know one another deeply due to that proximity, and know how to push each other's buttons.

--Tonally speaking, their relationship absolutely had the vibe of the "This Is My Idea" from The Swan Princess, which I know is deeply ingrained in the minds of many romance readers of a certain age. If you liked that, you'll like this. Morgan and Harriet are that without the arranged marriage, and with a good deal more emotional maturity (but not so much that the story is boring) and no insta-love. It's pretty clear that these two have had a thing for each other since they were kids, and it just took some good old-fashioned imprisonment for Morgan to go "ARRANGE THE MARRIAGE!!!"

--The supporting cast is hilarious (I assume we'll get a Rhys book... I mean his name is fucking Rhys and he doesn't wanna get married...?) and anyone who enjoys "everyone can see it" will have a good time with them.

--This is actually a pretty hot trad historical romance, I've gotta say, especially for one that's a bit lower angst. There's really good flirting, you get some light blindfold action, a lot of foreplay--I mean, the three kisses are essentially a sex bet. And it never feels like Harriet is in over her head, though Morgan is obviously much more experienced than she is and knows exactly what he's doing with this three kisses shit; Bateman does some maneuvering to make sure it feels super consensual. Which, honestly, isn't always a must for me as a reader, but it's a must for the tone of this book. And then you get some last minute shenanigans that I didn't expect but was super into.

--Great grand gesture, much appreciate.

--Going back to that sex stuff though... How refreshing to have a good bit of sex in the book, acknowledge Harriet's worries about ruination... and then go "well, shit happens". I'm so over historical romance reviewers (some of which I'm sure will dog this book out) acting as if nobody had sex before marriage in Days of Yore. And everyone who did was found out and ruined.

First off, as with today, money and the right connections can get you a fuckton of leeway. The Duchess of Devonshire literally had a child out of wedlock with a future prime minister, and with the right maneuvering, got back to her top spot in society in no time. And she was not the only one. People could be scandalous, and still received, because you had no choice but to receive them. And considering how much historical romance focuses on the upper crust...

Aside from that, it's just like--cool, so we'll accept all the dukes and the hot people with all their teeth and the lack of STIs but we won't accept people fucking out of wedlock just for fun? Okay!!!

But that's a huge digression, and I use it to say that I loved how this book treated sex. Harriet lets Morgan do stuff to her because she's curious and it's fun and let's be real, she's highkey in love with him even if she doesn't realize it at the moment. Harriet does some reckless shit because it feels good and she knows how to get away with it. One of my favorite parts of this book was someone realizing that Shit Went Down and going "listen, lots of people do that and we just don't talk about it, you're hardly the first one to go for it". Like... what a nice change of pace. Someone fucked out of wedlock in 18whatever it wasn't the end of the world.

What Didn't Work (For Me):

--There was a last minute plot device danger at the very end that lasted for like 30 seconds, and it felt pretty forced. This is an emotional book, not a plotty book. And that's cool! It wasn't a big detractor, it just didn't super work for me.

If you kinda wanna have fun and read about people who've known each other for years sniping at one another and then raw dogging in a fun environment, this is a great book for you. And a great series--I have yet to read the first, but I totally am, and A Daring Pursuit was really fun as well.

But for reals, don't dare a Davies if you want to keep your tender virginity intact.

Disgaea’s Item World

So, today I started thinking about Disgaea's Item World, and why I dislike it.

After all, I'm honestly really fond of the idea of the Item World, where you battle endless enemies for the sake of improving your equipment so that you can continue battle even more endless enemies.

The problem is that I... really dislike Disgaea's combat-system. Like, it gets better later on in the series, with a lot of minor quality-of-life improvements (like the button that lets you immediately toggle through enemies and friendlies).

But the camera is often really awkward, and the map (not even mentioning the “random map generation”) can be frustrating to navigate.

There's never any real “you will do x amount of damage” way to predict if you've set it up right, until you've tried it (and even then, it can randomly decide that it wasn't enough this time around). And I don't mean that in the “RNG is shit”-way, but rather in the “I'd like to know if I'll do 300 damage, or a total of 5”-way, but even later titles basically refuse to give accurate “attack-predictions” (watched someone fight Carnage Baal in Disgaea 5 a few days ago, and those attack-predictions said that he'd take half of Baal's health, only for him to kill him outright instead).

And this isn't even mentioning the geo-panels where enemies will suddenly be boosted or immortal or your characters might end up silenced or damaged, forcing you to keep a lookout for those as well.

So it's clunky to navigate the characters around the map, it's awkward to set them up with the camera being what it is, and it's extremely unpredictable because you don't know if you'll kill the enemy outright until you've already tried it.

Basically, the combat of Disgaea is... not fun. It's not dreadful, mind you, but it isn't exactly a glowing review by any stretch of the word.

And the Item World is based around the idea that you love the combat of the game in question. That the very act of battling an endless amount of enemies is nearly a reward in and of itself, that you then also receive a bonus super-powered item from by the end of it.

So I was thinking about how Divinity 2 would be glorious with an Item World, because the combat of that game is (in my eyes, as someone who isn't using it for socializing with friends, which it's no doubt excellent for) all that really keeps it afloat. So Divinity 2's combat must be amazing, right? And actually? No, it kind of really isn't.

Divinity 2 is sort of based around the idea that either you completely decimate your enemy, or your enemy completely decimates you. There's very little space in between those two scenarios, and sometimes it'll require you to cheese it by bending the physics of the game-mechanics until they start to cry, or you'll go away and level-up somewhere else until you decimate them instead of the other way around.

Basically, if the enemy gets their turn before you, odds are pretty good that you'll be dead by the time your turn comes around. And if you don't manage to finish off the enemies in your turn, they'll probably manage to kill you in theirs.

So, you know, it's not the most excitedly dynamic kind of combat-systems. The reason combat is looked forward to so much in the game, is because it offers you the chance to earn a bit of extra experience. And since there's a limited amount of encounters in the entire game, every little bit of experience helps.

Basically, Divinity 2 is a game that sets up an entire wonderful world for you to explore, and then proceeds to railroad you into following the path that won't insta-kill you by forcing you into encounters you don't have enough levels to win. So, you know, lots of fun to play with friends, but kind of repetitive to play by yourself.

By now, I was getting curious. Was there any game with a combat-system where the Item World would be exciting to play through in and of itself?

And I came up with one.

Bloodborne.

Bloodborne basically stacks all of its value into having absolutely phenomenal combat-mechanics. It's the kind of game where your character or story doesn't matter all that much, because you only care about all of the cool fights that you can get yourself involved in.

I mean, sure, there are bosses whom I'd kick in front of a train if I could get away with it, but Bloodborne is at its heart a game where you're kind of delighted by having found a new boss to fight.

The only real thing that Bloodborne falters at (in my eyes) is the lack of available equipment until the player reaches New Game Plus.

Some builds just aren't viable until you have certain weapons or items, and those will only be found on certain end-game bosses. Meaning that you'll have to beat the game before you can try to play with that kind of build, which gets really annoying if you don't want to actually play New Game Plus.

But see, that's the moment where the Item World really begins to shine as an idea. What if you could spend enough time in the Item World that you could make some weapons viable for any kind of build, even without going into New Game Plus? A way to change what a weapon scales with, or how much damage it does, or the chance for causing stagger?

Suddenly, what was before a limiting kind of thing, has become a novelty. If you want a weapon with that particular move-set, then you'll have to deal with the bosses, but any other weapon could serve as a replacement of sorts to that weapon.

And, perhaps, hidden deep within that Item World, a certain Pthumerian Queen waits to be revealed. (Thus replacing the Chalice Dungeons with the Item World, and turning them into something that's actively rewarding the player as they go along, rather than an eternal grind that will lead to a kind of interesting boss-fight some day down the line.)

“Oh my god, today he looked at me in English class…”

Typical conversations in the overly crowded washroom at school. I wasn’t a participant, rather I just wanted to pee and get away from the constant praise for a boy that really wasn’t as spectacular as girls liked to make him seem. Of course he was cute, tall and well built but he wasn’t a rare specimen. He was just like every other guy on the lacrosse team and nothing about him really stood out when I saw him loitering in the halls, laughing about god knows what with his teammates.

 I finished up quickly, washing my hands well but not even bothering to dry them, because I couldn’t stand to listen to the girls gush about him anymore. I just wanted to meet up with my friends in the cafeteria like I did every day and talk about things other than the school’s jocks.

 “Oh my god did you see Ethan today? He looks so cute with his new glasses!” my best friend Ashlyn said to the others as I was sitting down.

 There went my hopes of not only talking about boys I guess. Although to talk about Ethan was a little different than to gush about Grayson. Everyone loved Grayson, he was the favourite twin and much more popular. Honestly, if they weren’t identical twins you wouldn’t know they were even related because of how different they were. Ethan was a nerd, he was in the DnD club at our school and was ironically allergic to grass so he got to sit out for most of the gym classes we had. Grayson, who was not allergic to grass, thrived in gym. He ran hard, played hard and sometimes took things a bit too seriously. Neither of them were bad people, it just so happened that one of them was much more approachable than the other.

I scanned the cafeteria, finding Ethan first. He was just about to sit at his usual lunch table, his flannel shirt tucked into his blue jeans. As he settled his tray down he looked up, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose. We made eye contact, I smiled and waved and he did the same back. Casual.

 When I continued to observe the cafeteria, I came across Grayson staring at me already. He was wearing the same letterman jacket he wore almost everyday, this time with a white button up shirt and a navy tie underneath. It must be game day. My eyebrows raised as him and I’s gazes met. He gave me a kind smile, and I gave him a confused smile in return before turning back to my friends.

 We continued to chat about everything and anything as lunch time ticked away up until the bell rang. As we were about to stand to leave, a deep voice called to our attention.

 “Lacy, Ashlyn, Y/N…” it was Grayson. His eyes lingered on mine once more. He smiled again before continuing to make eye contact with each of us. “Am I gonna see you all at the game tonight? It’s the last game we have before homecoming next week and we need to win both these games to get into playoffs. It would be amazing to have each of you out there supporting us.”

 “Well…” I began but I was abruptly interrupted.

 “Of course we’ll be there Gray! Wouldn’t miss it for the world!” Lacy piped up, causing me to raise my eyebrow at her before turning back to the boy standing before us.

 There was that award-winning Grayson Dolan smile all the girls fawned over. “Oh, that’s great! I’ll see you all later tonight!” he said, making eye contact with us all once more and again myself last. There was a small linger, I smiled back at him and swore to god he winked before turning away and jogging off to his friends.

 “Y/N! Grayson Dolan just winked at you! What is going on between you two? He must like you!” Ashlyn squealed as we left the cafeteria with Lacy bouncing around next to her. Lacy was so small that it seemed that she couldn’t hold back her excitement when it came to things like this.

 “Guys, calm down. The only thing he likes about me is my Instagram pictures okay? And don’t think too much about that, he likes everything everyone posts on insta. He’s just nice and knows that by liking people’s things he can get them to think they’re friends, which gets more people to come to the games and cheer for him. He’s just very socially intelligent and knows how to network. It’s no big deal.” I said, shrugging them off as we headed to the change rooms before our gym class.

 Today it was raining so we were stuck inside playing dodgeball, meaning that Ethan also had to participate. The teacher separated us all into two different teams; Grayson, Lacy and Ashlyn on one team and Ethan and I on the other. Ethan and I stood next to each other, casually dodging balls and watching everyone else put all their effort into the game.  

 “So Ethan,” I said before ducking to dodge a ball that had been launched right at me. “You going to the lacrosse game tonight? Your brother kind of implied that it’s important and got Lace and Ash to agree that we would go.”

 He shook his head, “I don’t think I really belong there. Plus, it’s supposed to rain all night and I hate to sit out in the cold…”

 “Come on E. Bring all your friends and we can all sit and watch together. It won’t be that bad plus I think it’s about time that we go to the one sporting event we all attend each year. It’s a tradition.” I said, trying to sound as casual as possible but E knew something was up. He just stared at me, eyebrow cocked until I continued. “Okay also I really don’t want to sit through a whole lacrosse game listening to them gush over the boys.” I said, gesturing to the two girls giggling as they watched the way Grayson’s muscles rippled as he threw the dodgeball at his next target.

 “Okay, okay. I’ll get the guys to come along, but you owe me.” Ethan said with a sigh. Thank god.

  It was halfway through the lacrosse game but my clothes were completely soaked through. I sat in between Ethan and Ashlyn. Ethan and his friends had brought rain ponchos and Lacy and Ashlyn refused to let the three of us be seen in anything like that. Luckily enough I wore a rain jacket, but it wasn’t helping much seeing as water kept trickling into the jacket and I knew my shirt was almost as wet as my jeans.

 I couldn’t believe the turn out our team had gotten even with the storm that was happening, the bleachers were almost full and people were cheering loud. That was, I couldn’t believe it until I overheard the girls around me gushing again over Grayson, this time talking about how they couldn’t believe he had specifically checked on them to see if they were coming to the game. “It was like he basically invited me” one blonde girl said, smirking at her friends.

 “See, I told you he’s just smart and knows how to convince people to come to his games.” I said to Ash, gesturing to the proud girl. “He checked in on everyone in order to fill the stands. There was nothing special about him asking us.”

 Ashlyn looked as if she wanted to retorque but she was drawing a blank. There was nothing she could say because she knew I was right.

 The game ended much sooner than we had anticipated and we were eager to finally leave the pouring rain. We waited for the people near us to clear the stands so that we could leave when we were interrupted by Grayson standing in the stairwell, still in uniform with his helmet and lacrosse stick in his hands.

 “Hey E, the team is going for a victory meal at the diner like usual. You in?” he asked, Ethan nodded in response. “Bring your friends along too, the more the merrier.” Grayson said, holding my gaze with his own even though he was addressing Ethan. Before his brother could even reply, Gray nodded and then ran down the stairs, and disappeared into the change room.

 “Okay Y/N, you can not deny that one! He wants you there! We all saw it!” Lacy exclaimed, flailing her arms around in excitement. “He likes you!”

��I rolled my eyes. Grayson Dolan did not feel that way about me, no way.

  The diner was dimly lit and mostly empty, except for the part where the whole lacrosse team was sitting, trying to squeeze all ten of them in the two corner tables. Once Grayson noticed us all, he smiled brightly and stood up to greet us all. He shook all of Ethan’s friends hands and hugged Ethan, Lacy, Ashlyn and I. For someone who had just played a lacrosse game, holy shit did he smell good. Was it vanilla? I loved the smell of vanilla.

 Grayson led us all back to the tables where all the boys were sitting and took his original seat next to Justin, the team’s captain. As Grayson introduced us all, the ten boys all greeted us eagerly, many of them giving Ethan a high five as he took the seat next to his twin. A waitress came by and took our orders, mine just being a white hot chocolate, lots of whip cream.  Simple, but my favourite and I could really use something to warm me up.

 We sat around chatting for hours, everyone getting along surprisingly well even though we were all of two distinctly different social groups. At one point Ethan rose to go to the bathroom and this left an empty space next to me. One that Grayson almost filled immediately.

“I’m really glad you made it to our game tonight, Y/N. I appreciate you sticking around even through all the rain.” He said as he slipped into the seat next to me. His smile was so genuine and his hair looked flawless like always. I began to wonder if Grayson Dolan had any imperfections… No no no no no. I can’t fall under his spell.

 “Oh, it’s no big deal Grayson. You know me, I just love to support the school and watch random sports!” I exclaimed, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.

 He laughed at me and shook his head, “You know, you can call me Gray or even just G. You’re like the only person I know who still calls me Grayson…”

 I was taken aback, I had never even considered calling him anything else other than Grayson since I had met him in junior high… “Alright what ever you say, Gray… Congrats on the win tonight by the way. You did really well. You’re pretty good with your stick.” I said before taking a sip of my hot chocolate.

 “That’s not the first time G has heard that compliment from a girl!” one of his team mates piped up from the end of the other table, causing me choke on my drink. The boys on his team all cheering as Grayson tried to calm them all down but he wasn’t very convincing cause he kept laughing too.

 “I didn’t mean… you know… uhh. I just meant like, your lacrosse stick…” I tried to fix what I had said but it was far too late for me to try and salvage this. The blush consuming my cheeks and my hands getting sweaty. Why didn’t I think that through?

 Grayson continued too laugh, even as Ethan approached the table again. He signaled that he wasn’t going to be moving when he reached and put his arm around the back of my chair, Ethan being forced to sit in Grayson’s old seat. “You know, you’re cute when you blush. I know what you meant, don’t even worry about it.” He said, smiling lightly at me.

 After a while people started to leave. Ethan’s nerd friends all left together and the majority of Grayson’s teammates left too. Grayson and I had been talking casually the whole time until suddenly his energy changed. “You know, I’ve kinda been thinking for a while that maybe you and me should go out sometime. See a movie, or go to the beach or something? I’m really down for anything.”

 I looked at Grayson, not saying anything. I was completely taken by surprise. I had never considered going out with him so I didn’t really know how I felt about the idea. I mean do I want to go out with him? I apparently had been silently staring at him for too long because Ashlyn kicked me in the shin under the table, glaring at me and nodding back to the boy who was waiting patiently for my reply.

 I shook my head lightly, bringing myself back to reality before looking back to Grayson. “I mean, sure why not? That sounds like it could be fun.”

 His eyes lit up, almost like he was surprised by my answer before he reached for the napkin that came with my hot chocolate. He scribbled on the flimsy piece of cloth before he spoke “I’m sorry I have to go, but this is my number. Text me. I can’t wait to plan this date.”

 He stood and nodded to the remaining members of his team and they got up too, all heading out the door to Grayson’s car. We all watched him drive away in a stunned silence before Lacy finally broke.

 “Oh. My. God. Grayson Dolan just asked you out!”

Season 7 Episode 6 - Winter Wonderland

I like winter very much, but it’s nice that I can lock it out of the house for as long as I want to, and then I can go outside to like it when I want to do that.

I like the snow in its different forms, the clearness of air, how clean everything looks, the ways the sun sets, the brightness of days and the mysterious darkness of nights, the silence of forests… Having walking murderous dead there would spoil everything.

So when our fellowship walks on the lands beyond the Wall, they have some beautiful landscapes to see. It’s a nice atmosphere to talk to each other, to catch up and learn to know the new people. Jon and Tormund talk about kneeling. The Free Folk never kneel, and Mance as their leader certainly didn’t. And so they didn’t ally themselves with Stannis and were driven back from the Wall to be massacred by the dead, which was exactly what Mance fought against. In hindsight, as much as I’d like to blame Stannis and his pride, it was Mance’s pride that doomed them in the end. When faced with the exact same choice later, when Jon wanted their help in defeating the Boltons, Tormund joined him.

Jon offers the Mormont sword to Jorah. That Valyrian sword could be a matter of life and death up here, so Jon of course tries to give it to someone else. Jorah doesn’t take it. He is not here to be a Mormont.

Tormund likes to stack his odds against him, so he tells the Hound about the beauty “waiting for him” in Winterfell. Look, you are on a suicide mission, do you really want to talk about someone you want to see again? Tormund doesn’t care, he has lived this long by being tough to kill.

So have all of them. There’s Jon, who has ranged beyond the Wall five times now (I’m counting walking to Mance’s tent too), and been in mortal danger every time. He has been in a lot of fights, but he has always come back. Then there’s Beric Dondarrion, the knight who dueled in tournaments and has survived many battles, alive or dead, Thoros who fights with a drunk’s spirit, Jorah, survivor of Meereen’s arena, Gendry who hasn’t had anything to do but train and the Hound who is the Hound. They also have a couple of redshirts, because they are always useful. The greatest warriors of Westeros, all gathered here, at this time, for a purpose.

Beric doesn’t know what that purpose is, but the Lord of Light has guided them here. Or has he? He sent the Brotherhood vision “Hey, be near Eastwatch soon, big things will happen there”, but did he know what exactly that big thing will be? Jon got the idea very suddenly. And if he saw that the two people he has kept alive will go beyond the Wall, did he also see the end result of that trip? What is the Lord of Light’s endgame? I have thought that he is a “hard god making hard decisions”, and wants the humanity to survive, but doesn’t really care more than that (and that the survivors will worship him). He threw Stannis out after calling him the Chosen One for years. That still seems to be the likeliest explanation. The other is that he wants the humanity to end.

Now we get to the part of the plan called “How exactly do you plan to get just one dead with you, since they march in an army and the Walkers may well sense what all of them are doing?” Oh hey, there is one! It’s a bear. A dead bear. Which makes me think of how completely the ecosystem here has been wrecked. If the dead kill every animal they meet, have all the mammoths, sabertooth tigers, direwolves and so on gone extinct? These lands are wide, so maybe not necessarily, but big mammals must be in the brink of extinction. After all, humans were entirely capable of wiping out mammoths in our world without any help from the dead.

The dead bear is a terrifying opponent, and being dead doesn’t need any more sustainment than the rest of the army, so if I was in charge of this army I would take animals in it too. But now that I think about it, is there a reason the army is composed of only dead people and some horses? Is it that you can’t make wild animals to work formally for you, even when dead? Horses can be ridden because they were ridden when alive, and humans can do all sorts of things so they are easy to command? But while you can raise bears, the best you can do with them is set them free to kill everything they see.

After the bear, the fellowship sees a group of human dead, led by one of the Walkers. Killing the Walker makes the dead fall down, except one. They decide later that this must mean that killing the Walkers breaks the spells to the ones they raised. That simplifies things. How many Walkers are there? It can be any number between ten and a hundred. But the Night King has raised the most, killing others may remove pieces of the army but killing the king…

Oh, killing the main villain will remove the problem? That’s convenient. But it won’t solve the socioeconomics of Westeros so there’s still work to be done for Daenerys even if the apocalypse is averted.

Tyrion is worried about what can happen if and when Daenerys dies. Hopefully not before she has secured her rule, but even at that point the succession can get messy because she can’t have her own children. Daenerys doesn’t want to discuss that, the throne is top priority.

But… in case anything happens to her, Tyrion will be in big trouble. Let’s hope that the meeting next week will go well… haha, no way it will.

The fellowship ties up the wight, but either its shrieks alert the rest of the army or the Walker who raised it knew immediately what happened. The humans know so little about the rules. As far as plans go, this one wasn’t that well planned. The entire army of the dead follows them to the frozen lake and surrounds them.

Then it’s a waiting game. Thoros is the first one to lose, dying in his sleep during the night. He served the Lord of Light, he brought Beric and the Hound here, and now he’s dead? And doesn’t get any resurrections? Well how nice of the Lord.

The Night King arrives to see what they have here. Their entire army. Surrounding fewer than a ten humans. The million dragon question: Does the Night King know what he has here? It’s the King in the North. Does he know, does he care? He plays with his captives instead of sending his forces some way through the lake (later in the episode we see that fresh water is not deadly to them, so spending a few hundred wights maximum would have allowed them to overpower these humans) or throwing them with projectiles (even if the dead can’t throw anything far or use bows, the Night King himself has a strong throwing arm as we see later). They wait for an easier attack.

Meanwhile, at Winterfell it doesn’t take much to make Arya and Sansa suspicious of each other. They haven’t seen each other for years, and in each other’s eyes the other one has… maybe not changed but intensified. Arya comes back as a tough fighter who can go toe-to-toe with Brienne, and Sansa is a political player who has Littlefinger on her side.

Sansa says that Jon would have lost the battle without her, the Knights of the Vale are here because of her. Yes, that’s true, but Littlefinger talked them to it. Even if Arya can believe that Sansa is not stealing Jon’s throne, everybody knows that Littlefinger is always up for a promotion.

Sansa receives an invitation to the big meeting. Everyone seems to be invited. But Sansa doesn’t go, it smells like a trap all over and Jon has already left the North for months to the unrest of his bannermen. Her going too would make the bannermen wonder if the Starks actually want to die. So she sends Brienne.

Later she goes to check Arya’s room, and finds faces there. I don’t think that she knows what Walder Frey looked like, but someone’s face skin is never a nice find when going through someone’s bag. Arya enters to talk with her, extremely threateningly of course. Her point is that she is very dangerous, but at least for now she is loyal to Sansa, if Sansa is loyal to Jon. Yes, this certainly puts Sansa on the ease. And could someone please talk about that knife everyone swings around?

Daenerys gets the raven and rides out immediately, against Tyrion’s counsel. Nothing new in that last part. He points out that if she dies, everything is lost. That’s true. No her, no dragons, no armies who have sworn loyalty to her and her alone. Cersei will move her attention North, try everything to kill the rest of the Starks and then they all die when the dead come.

So in one corner we have Daenerys, and the other corner we have the Night King. The Queen and the King, and both are insta-win-buttons. Not very democratic.

The ice gets thick enough and the dead attack again. One of the attackers moves to free the captured dead. Why? It’s not like they are going to miss one wight. Have the Walkers figured out what they plan to do? Do they think that there are researchers of spells South of the Wall who may figure out something if they get a walking dead? How much do they know of the contemporary South?

But if they don’t like that humans captured a wight, then bringing it to the South is a good thing, right? Right?

That chinless skeleton got a lot of screentime for an undead mook. When it came back from under the lake I thought that it was going to get to kill someone or do something else memorable, but nope.

All hope seems lost, they are seconds from death, when… the death comes from the sky. Dragonfire and ruin. Three dragons in action start wrecking up the army of the dead. How do you like the song of fire?

I didn’t expect this so soon. There’s still eight episodes to go. Those three dragons could destroy the whole army in a matter of minutes. Daenerys could save the world without anyone believing she did that.

The Night King grabs a spear. Oh dear. Oooh dear. He throws it, and one-shots… Viserion? Their colors are hard to see. Anyway, a dragon is down. Okay, the dead are a threat again. Jon is left behind, Daenerys leaves before everything is lost.

This was not a good outcome. A dragon’s body amidst the army of the dead, I knew what would happen in the aftermath. Viserion’s body is raised as a flying dead. This is not good, not good at all. Can it spit fire? Can it spit ice? Anyway, now they have a flying giant creature. Do the Wall’s spells block flying dead? Can they now just melt it down? Aargh, I knew (not knew-knew but strongly predicted) that this would end badly, and I knew that the dead will get through during this season, but still.

Was losing Viserion worth it? Do they get Cersei and everybody else to listen soon enough so they can prepare for an invasion? Or will there be a big trap in King’s Landing and everything down there goes to further ruin?

Jon gets up, and faces an entire army alone. Again. But here’s the cavalry! Benjen is back! He is actually going to meet Jon again! “Here, take my horse, thanks, bye, oh, I’m dead”. Wow. In a series of quick reunions, he really wanted to get the quickest one. And so Benjen Stark is dead. He survived all these years, alone in the lands beyond the Wall, so that he could join the long line of people who have died so that Jon could live for a minute more.

He better be worth it.

He survives, once more, by a horse bringing him back. This time it’s Benjen’s horse, nice that it gets to finally return.

Jon is put on the ship and they are off. Daenerys is there to see him when he comes to. Okay, I am poor with shipping, but I still felt their conversation. And they seem like they could be a nice couple. They respect each other and know that they both want good for the world. Grading on a curve, that’s really good.

Maybe Jon’s luck will last through all the dumb things he still has time to try.

Our first experience of the city usually stems from having lived it vicariously through over-the-top Hollywood films like The Hangover and the Ocean’s movies. Movies, which glamorise the black out drunk, disastrous stag/hen do and frenzied gambling narrative that is so synonymous with Vegas.

As appealing as getting stuck in Las Vegas with Bradley Cooper sounds, we felt it was time to discover another side to Vegas. A side that consists of more than just walking up and down the strip, nursing hangovers and spending unconscionable amounts of money.

Here at GLAMOUR, we’ve decided that what happens in Vegas shouldn’t just stay in Vegas. They say everybody goes to Vegas for 3 days. We stuck to that formula – and boy, did we live our best lives! So, we’ve compressed our trip of a lifetime into a ‘Day and Night Life Guide to Vegas’, especially for you.

The Hotel.. After an 11-hour flight and the initial merciless assault of heat as you emerge from the airport, we were beyond grateful for the respite offered as we entered the cool lobby (in the literal sense) of the stunning Vdara Spa hotel. Whilst benefiting from being right at the heart of the strip, the hotel is surprisingly casino-free – a refreshing anomaly in Vegas. With stunning views of the city and beyond, a fully kitted out spa and a high-tech gym, it’s totes the digs for the millennial traveller. Did we mention that the hotel also has robots that can deliver room service all ours of the day at the mere press of a button? MIND=BLOWN.

The spot for lunch… Chica at the Venetian. Nestled within a quieter corner of the opulent, Italian themed ‘Venetian’ and with its infamous canals, paddled by T-shirt clad gondoliers (yes, really) – it would be easy to miss this heavenly little piece of Latin-inspired cuisine. Mouth- watering dishes like the crispy calamari fuego, fish tacos and the shrimp and butter salad are easily washed down with the sinfully tasty array of cocktails that are available on the menu.

Laugh and Dine at… Beauty & Essex at the Cosmopolitan. Now, if ever there was a restaurant made for the girl with serious Sex and the City nostalgia, this is it. Behind a hidden entrance in a pawn shop (I know, we couldn’t either at first), Beauty and Essex can best be described as a lux restaurant-lounge; the sort of place you would go with your best girlfriends to giggle, chat, eat, drink and flirt with the waiters just like Carey Bradsaw and co. But don’t be fooled, it’s not all glitz, this place packs a culinary punch serving some of the most innovative finger food and creative cocktails a girl can ask for.

Nightcap at.. the Chandelier at the Cosmopolitan. In a city that never sleeps, the idea of a nightcap is somewhat redundant. Nevertheless, after you’ve eaten far too much than you should have (this is Vegas, after all), the Chandelier bar is a great spot to see and be seen. Stunningly encased within a giant crystal chandelier (which could only ever work in Vegas), you have a choice of 3 bars across 3 levels, giving you the added bonus of both walking off those excess calories whilst trying out the different menus that each bar offers. #winning.

Day party at.. Drai’s Beachclub at the Cromwell or the Marquee at the Cosmopolitan. A trip to Vegas is not complete without a pool party, okay?! Head over to Drai’s at the Cromwell for a signature Vegas day party. First of all, it’s perched 11 storeys above the strip gifting spectacular views. Secondly, the music is on point and you can enjoy all of this from your own private cabana with up to 8 of your closest mates. This comes with incredible VIP service – vodka cocktails and chicken strips with dirty fries are optional!

If, however, you’re looking for something a little more “boujie”, then head to the Marquee day club. A club offering sun-blazed lavish pool-sides, bungalow lofts, beautiful people and more fun, sun and music than you can shake a frozen margarita at. The best bit? The cabanas come with their own infinity pools and hot tubs. I mean…

Fine Dine at.. Spago at Bellagio Hotel and Casino. This statement-making location, featuring views of the fountains at the Bellagio, Celebrity Chef Wolfgang Puck’s infamous brainchild is a must. Even J-Lo rates it! Nothing quite prepares you for the unbelievable oysters with cocktail sauce or the mouth-watering tuna tartare. Don’t even get us started on the, quite frankly, outrageous burrata salad topped with balsamic and rocket pesto. Head there for an early dinner so you can enjoy the spectacular waterworks.

Dance at… ’Jennifer Lopez: All I have’ concert at Planet Hollywood! Quite frankly, it would be rude to go to the entertainment capital of the world and not be, well… entertained. After Britney made Vegas residencies officially cool (all while reportedly raking in an eye-watering £500,000 per show), other stars such as J-Lo have followed suit, picking up the baton with her “All I have” show. And its err-mazing. Energetically fusing cabaret, hip hop, Latina, dance and pop in a way only J Lo can, this is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the trip. It’s intimate, it’s slick, it’s spectacular all at the same time. Just remember not to overindulge with the supersize frozen cocktails as you’ll need to pop to the loo and miss part of her performance.

Insta at… Seven Magic Mountains. Art installation in Vegas? Yes, you heard correctly. If you can bear to tear yourself away from the strip, just a few miles from Las Vegas Boulevard, you’ll stumble across Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone’s installation of 730 foot tall columns of neon coloured boulders. If ever there was an installation made for insta….

Brunch at… Primrose at Park a MGM. In case you hadn’t noticed, Vegas is all about recreating iconic places and cultural references from across the Globe – and Primrose is no exception. With a tropical garden-inspired terrace, Primrose brings a piece of Provence right to the heart Vegas. Refined yet relaxed, Primrose offers stunning lavender mimosas, succulent fruit platters, hearty breakfasts and the show stopper- garden fries (made of fried pickled dill beans, hot peppers and sauce gribiche) making it a refreshing addition to the Las Vegas scene. You won’t want to ever leave. We guarantee it.

Wine and Dine at… Rivea at Delano. Perfect If you want to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. Alain Ducasse’s French and Italian-inspired restaurant is light and enjoyable fine dining. It’s also happens to have THE.BEST.VIEWS.OF.THE.ENTIRE.STRIP. #Truestory. The decor is also stunning with hundreds of glass bubbles suspending from the ceiling. Standout dishes include the moreish asparagus and ricotta ravioli, chick pea fries (who knew?!) and the zingy, uplifting marinated seabass. Nom! You’ll definitely want to eat more than you want to share. Rivea isn’t a restaurant, it’s an experience…. And one that you’ll want to insta the hell out of…

Brunch at… Bouchon at the Venetian. Bouchon at the Venetian is often feted as one of the best restaurants in Vegas. Pretty high praise but it really does live up to the hype. You can enjoy French-inspired cuisine including classics such as, the croque madame and their pretty – as-you- like patisserie assortment. The restaurant opens out onto an impossibly pretty outdoor terrace complete with a Venetian pool, fountains and foliage. The perfect spot for recovering after a boisterous night on the strip.

Go Glam… with Gypsy shrine. When you’re in the party capital of the world, getting your bling on is a must – especially with The Gypsy Shrine’s Vegas collection.

Vegas really is the place that keeps on giving, it totally lives up to the hype. “Man, I really like Vegas,” Elvis Presley.
