hhhhhhhhhh guess who drew all the batim characters in prep for the comic they’re making!

yeah so it took like 4 days to draw all these guys, and it was actually pretty fun figuring out colours and designs and stuff!

(also, update on the Reveries Twisted comic, I have a plan for the first chapter but i have like, 7 tests next week and I haven’t started drawing it yet so it’s definitely not going to be coming out anytime soon sdfgsdfsj but i am still working on it!)

anyway, i felt like writing little descriptions for every character, so feel free to read these below the ‘keep reading’ line if you feel like it! My ask box is also always open, so if u have any questions feel free to ask

Bertrum Piedmont-he/him, gay/ace

-Started working as a mechanic at about 15 and worked his way up from there -Everyone in the studio @ him: why are u british -His big ego often gets in the way of things, but at his core he's a good person (doing bad shit but ultimately having good intentions is common among these guys shdgfs) -Wlw & mlm solidarity w/ Lacie, who is his most trusted confidant and friend -Actually treats his employees well, even when they do basically nothing all day, so he does a lot of work himself most of the time Linda Stein-she/her, straight as a ruler -Parents immigrated from Spain -She's very catholic and very into 'traditional family values' and that sort of stuff -She is sweet, but her strict morals and black and white ethics often make her do unintentional harm -She is also pretty oblivious to most things Jack Fain-he/him & they/them, pan/ace, OCD -Mother immigrated from China to France, and then he moved to America, it's confusing -Can play the violin really well, but is terrible at composing his own pieces -Peak friend material -Short and round and soft with a love of a good espresso -Kind and quiet but ultimately ineffective and happy to watch from the sidelines Daniel 'Buddy' Lewek-he/him, aro/ace, autistic, jewish -He is curious and observant, but very very naive -He finds it hard to pick up on social cues, and tends to daydream a lot -Never really had a father figure, and unfortunately kind of half sees Joey as one (baaaad choice), but his mother is great -Loves drawing and tends to chew on pens (and most objects really) -Too young Susie Campbell-she/her, demi -Her parents were Russian and she picked up their accent, but taught herself how to cover it up. She is now excellent at voice acting. -Has a birthmark most theatres turned her away for. But luckily voice acting gave her another chance at performance, and the music department really does not care about it. -Her dad was a butcher, so she now knows a concerning amount about how to cut up and dissect meat. -She gets easily attached to things emotionally, and has a whole pile of random bits and bops she keeps on her person because she can't throw them away. -Naive, but smart enough to know how to read and deceive people if needed. Ms Abigail Lambert-she/her, lesbian -A very gifted artist, who is quite frustrated with the business aspect of animation. -Picked up quite a few things about engineering from Lacie. -Stern, but kind. Motherly, if she likes you and you squint hard enough. -Used to fighting for things. -Giving her food is a pretty good way to get her to like you. Being an artist, she forgets to eat at the correct times a lot, so a meals always appreciated. Norman Polk-he/him, gay, albino -Knows how to fix things, knows how to fight, knows how to hide -General cool uncle vibes -He watches people a lot, and gives off some creepy vibes, but he does genuinely care about people -Knows something is up and is determined to find out what (even if he dies trying) -Fought in WW1, then worked at a cinema for a bit. Emma Lamont-she/her, heteroflexible -Keep dancing even when everything goes wrong -Bit of a 'i'm better than these fools' mentality going on -But she's pretty chill, and willing to act when needed -Basically every woman in the studio knows her on the basis that she chills in the girls bathroom. -Hates Joey, but knows those who stir up a bit too much trouble usually 'resign' Sammy Lawrence-he/him, (vocal-romantic) bi/ace, ADD -His dad sucked, so he ran away. He's also the reason he's largely abandoned his faith, but he still holds hope that there is some kind of god out there. -He and Jack are basically brothers, they've known each other for a long time. -He can compose music in his head, but can play basically every instrument. -Tall and thin and sharp with a love of black coffee. -He's actually pretty chill and nice, but the conditions of the studio (workload, noises, dreams) have left him quick to snap and a stressed out mess. -He's pretty oblivious to his own feelings and spends basically all his time thinking about music, so he usually only realises that he has a crush on someone if he hears them singing (hence the vocal-romantic joke) Johnny Hart-he/him (she/her), gay (trans), heart condition -A nervous wreck who avoids everything and everyone -Trans but doesn't realise it, he thinks this level of discomfort has something to do with his heart condition or something like that. -Speaking of which, if he gets genuinely terrified or panicked he could have a heart attack. -Hence why he's a recluse who remains in the organ room and interacts w/ literally no one. -Except Dot and Buddy (who forgets he exists and who he also has a crush on). Wally Franks-he/him, pan -Friends with literally everyone who isn't one of the older folks (and thomas) -Honorary member of the music department because he can play a harmonica and vibes with everyone there. -Tries to put a positive spin on everything, often beyond the point of reason -A mischevous, mildly selfish prankster with a heart of gold -Gossip pals with Susie and Norman The Violinist-she/her, nobody knows -Has literally never expressed an emotion ever -Seems to know things are going to happen before they happen -Just generally pretty weird -She isn't friends with Dot, they're both just vaguely interested in what the others doing -She looks a lot like Allison, but the two have never spoken and nobody knows if they're sisters Thomas Connor-they/them, gynephilia -He is just. So tired. -An actual mechanical genius who gets his work used for the wrong purposes. -Is very of the 'when you're on a path stick to it' mentality -Cold and hard exterior that vertually no one except Allison has ever managed to get through. -He can and will beat you up. Henry Stein-he/him, gay, vitiligo -Nice and hardworking. -Doesn't have many emotions other than to draw. -He's in fucking narnia he's so deep in the closest. -Feels emotions, but buries them deep down and doesn't express them too clearly. -Has difficulty setting healthy boundaries with people and represses himself far too much. Joey Drew-he/him, homoromantic/pansexual, bipolar disorder, alcohol and cigarette addictions -Chaotic, feral, short little man who lies to everyone -Charismatic as hell, but also a terrible friend and person in general -He doesn't blink enough, does not know the meaning of personal space, and hasn't aged for about 4 years, which are all very bad signs. -Doesn't understand how to run a business but does so anyway. Doesn't understand how to interact with people but does so anyway. Doesn't understand how to create life but does so anyway- -He isn't pure evil, he just gets into very bad mindsets and makes poor decisions that lead him down the wrongest way to go. -Does some self evaluation and goes 'maybe this wasn't the right way chief :/' just a bit too late Audrey Dempsey-she/her, lesbian, Borderline Personality Disorder -Feral conspiracy theorist -May or may not be related to multiple studio members -Everyone's called her crazy for years and made her feel like a burden, and she is hellbent on proving everyone wrong -Quite socially awkward, and rather sarcastic with a dark sense of humour -Works for Archgate Allison Pendle-she/her & they/them, androphilic/ace -Is forever lost in a vintage clothing store -Most people say she seems nice, but everyone just kind of subconciously registers that there is something up with her -Knows a lot about the supernatural -The person closest to Joey, which doesn't necessarily mean they're friends -Nobody has ever seen the right side of her face Dot Acciaci-she/her, pan -Her parents are Italian, and she speaks a little herself, usually using it to encrypt her private notes -Mischevious & curious, but ultimately kind -She will find out your secrets, and is very good at reading people -Great storyteller -Struggles with loneliness a lot Dr Eleanor Hackenbush-she/her, aro/ace -Science knows no bounds -Doesn't care what your motivation is, as long as you give her some cash and some experiments -Filled with nothing but utter spite Ms Reina Rodriguez-they/them, demi -Tired of everything -Although she puts up a calm exterior, Rodriguez is very attached to the studio and views it as her 'new family', having a terrible relationship with her old one -Her family drama connects to the fact they're very catholic, but she nobody knows what this drama is other than Joey Tessa Arch-she/her, straight -An absolute bitch -Trusts her husband far too much -Not very smart, but compensates for this for being good looking and rich Shawn Flynn-he/him (intersex), pan -Jovial, but gets angry quickly -Willing to do 'wrong' things if it helps someone else out, kind of like Robin Hood or something -His mother taught him how to sew and he helped her make clothes when he was younger -Found it hard to get a job because he's Irish, so despite being tired of all the bullshit of JDS, he is reluctant to look elsewhere -Friends with Lacie and Grant because they appreciate his humour Lacie Benton-She/her, lesbian, trans -Tougher than the toughies -wlw & mlm solidarity w/ Bertrum, who she views as one of the only genuinely smart people in JDS and who she has worked for for basically all of her life -Feels like something is up, but doesn't notice much if it doesn't connect to her work -Has automatophobia -Friend with Shawn and Grant because she respects their dedication to their work Grant Cohen-He/him, bi, depression, jewish -Absolute madlad at maths -Acts like he doesn't care what you think, cares far too much about what you think -Everyone wants him to just get therapy already -Doesn't have many friends, but has a weird 'we're both horribly overworked' kinship with Sammy, so they usually just chill and smoke together -Friends with Shawn and Lacie because they're actually mentally stable and he needs some rocks Nathan Arch-He/him, straight -You should hate him -You should hate him a lot -Super rich and doesn't pay his workers enough -Silver tongued -Basically a spider. Creates webs of manipulation and lies, sees a lot, and knows plenty about waiting for his prey to come to him.

So a quick question I have for you. (May not have a short answer) But what do you think Gula's personality to be like? What kind of strengths and weaknesses does he have? Beyond the obvious he's logical and reserved and clever, more in-depth traits that make his character fuller and more like a real person. I'd like to hear some of your deep analysation if you don't mind.

This has take long enough and I want to post it now. [Will edit this maybe later bur now I finish the visuals lets get down to this]

Oh boy

You call it

Everybody prepare bc this may have take me awhile but be ready for my analysis at some level of him.

Warning: this is kind of my personal view of all and may sound weird at some level but I am trying to make sense to all of them (Foretellers in general). I elaborate this in my way to plan some fanfics and to do so i kind of take my time on try to analyse what I had.

You may want to go straight to Conclusions but I point out too circular thoughts at the beginning just for the sake of think of this a bit more

Analysis of Gula:

Cold headed and one of the most clever and quick to catch up stuff that may be happening. He is between the Master of Masters apprentices one of the youngest and has a special friendship develop with Ava, the youngest between all as it seems.

This is the basic we know and I want to put as a base for what I will dive at some point and ramificate to them all in a light way just to reference a bit.

Observations:

Out of my obserbations between one of the strongest things the Master’s apprentices share is their faith that the Master is right.

Back on the scene where Ira confronts them and they acknowledge a nightmare roaming the scene cuts to a flashback which different from the present it has a warm and familiar vive. The Master hold them together, they would laugh and be somehow unite, but the present just will reveal how little they may actually know each other, most of them.

The fact that Ira doubts who to point as most of the other and the rest of the movie with the exception of the bond between Gula and Ava.

Why I point this? This is something special, Gula doesn’t seem to be close to anyone except Ava. He trusts her almost to a degree as his faith for the Master but on a friend to friend way, enough to reveal her and talk about his role completely and openly on his weakest moment .

+ He can care under his masks

Gula didn’t really like his role tha much I think. He didn’t even want the Master to disappear the way he did. But let me add my point on how he came to the conclusion he just wanted things to be the way they were before by summoning KH.

He seems to be usually quick to find a solution or reasoning with whatever he has in front of him but as time passes and he hasn’t been able to succeed as any other task he may have been previously assigned. Even with his best he may have feel the stress of all falling down as I guess, every passing day and thing going worse is clear sing that he hasn’t fuli hir role as his own expectatives. He only show his weak side on the moment he feels can’t deal with it alone after months.

+ Stress if you allow me to say.

It may be me but his minimum expressions show that he didn’t like the whole “Trust no one but yourself”. He may have let it pass about Invi, Ira and Aced but the fact it include Ava may throw him off been one of the closes person he had aside the Master. He wanted to trust her and he did, even if he constantly try to remind himself his Master words.

When he got lost and no more choices left for him to take on his mind there was the last plan: Summon Kingdom Hearts may lure the Master back, right? He would not let them fall intro such foolish actions, right? or so I think may be what pass through his mind or some nature of that. To everything fall since he in no able to fulfill his role.

+ Pressure which equals at rushed actions.

He may be one of the most precise and calculative between the 6 but, he at the end even if he is the genius one he does make mistakes. Like maybe talk a bit too much into the detail sometimes, he is young so understandable he rushes a bit too much sometimes, some few times really. When he slip the fact that Invi talk him into leaving Aced’s alliance he cover any mistake fluently and so naturally that I think he may know how to handle when he wants to clear stuff is he kind of messes up at this point but he could also play the facts though if you pay attention you can tell when he say something he didn’t need to on the moment. He sure knows how to keep an act if is need.

+ Effectiveness though minor struggles on the way

Gula is a boy who keep closed to others if people don’t try much to reach to him as I guess. Ava and the master seem the type to like to know the others but I think Ira, Invi, and Aced been young adults dealing with whatever is their duty they may have let pass the young one if he wanted to approach them or not, they would not mind. My faint guess is that he doesn’t show much of his true self to other and keep the cold headed manner since is what he may feel is expect to him and may be easier than show vulnerability of his own thinking and feeling at personal level, he may show it sometimes to the Master but I guess not that much since he may want to be probe at the others level been one of the youngest.

While I feel Ava been the most reachable one may have reach to him and with time build this friendship bond they have. The only scene I saw Gula drop his ‘mask’ was when He sincere to Ava and how he feel, how pointless his role seem or how much of almost a failure he got to be in a subtle way, he could no more and share with her what has been burdening him. But she could not help him because it go against her moral, he respect that and tae his mask up and wish for her the only thing the others didn’t say to him.

+ A mask over other mask

A/N: personally at this point I am sobbing a bit inside ; ;

But even after all, even if she turn him down, she is still his friend.

So i will touch the mobile game since I doubt their last conversation was that but his will be a bit more lighter so we can reach my conclusion. I can just assume a bit here and arrange facts but maybe is me trying to understand him.

After that on Back Cover I believe that wasn’t their final talk and may had another talk before the war but at this point I assume a pre-stress state creeping on them.

Gula may have go off with his plan but I don’t think he remember he badly even after that. He keep his believes strong towards his plans which I personally feel may be his attempt of ‘desperate try’ to get the Master to come back to all of them.

He may feel he can’t do anything about the end at this point.

In this moment on the timeline I assume pretty much each foreteller has fall in osme hole of pre-stress with the Keyblade War already on their heads. Which I assume took the drastic change I perceive on the story previously and at the war. Al is ending and I am not an expert but is the only thing I could think. Kids weren’t acting as kids too at this point in some cases because they were as well exposed to this opriment part of their story, fights between wielder became frequently and so all fall apart till it reach its end.

And the reborn.

He did try to wear his mask till the end and he did.

But it wasn’t over there as you know from the Epilogue on the Dark Seeker Saga. So let me one last time before reach the conclusions, there is so few left from me repeating stuff like crazy and to the best resume I can give and is more simple but I want to point this out before dive into it.

He got back to life, but even so you all hear him ask Luxu a reason why would he not include Ava. The bond of this two is a special thing I think the Master didn’t mind but will always be something to the matter, because they care about each other and if Ava’s out I have high expectation for him to want to know what become of her.

Hear me right here, the Master may still be important to them but Gula was expecting the Master to appear, maybe a childish thing that he would save them all because he was always hold in high regard by all of them but I think his faith may be starting to shake on a slightly not solid ground. Ava didn’t help him bug did give her an answer and even so is still his friend as so he to her.

Friendship has proved to be a factor that can get you to change views or who you choose to ally so I suppose he may play along but may not let this down, still this is a faint though with all going and and I first write most of the important remarks for this before this semi rambling part, sorry about that.

Conclusions:

Gula is a teenager that has got big responsibilities, may wear a mask ver the real one with his cool headed demeanor. tuns down companionship but if you get to actually know him you may notice this is just one side of his personality.

Weighted with the responsibility to stop an inevitable betrayal, and torn between his master’s orders and the believe one of the few he trusted till he could not longer wanted to do it all alone. shows weakness and vulnerability only with the ones he trusts and can keep appreciating said trusted people even if they are not up to help him on the moment. Loyal to some degrees.

Slips and messes up but tries to keep the control of the situation even so, flexible as the situation calls. but will always to be reasonable unless he is really into do a thing on his way, so kind of stubborn I will say.

Sassy when it calls and also probably honest s needed, a mechanism to comebacks or protection maybe but mostly used to handle situations.

May have his reasons to be so close and reserved. Life is not always fair you may guess.

At the end he is just a kid would may have been happy with the few he had before all this mess start to fall down and deserve a better guidance on social skills. He means no bad but truly would be more understood if there could have been time to work with his reserved ways and mistrust to the world in general out of his closed circle of people he trusted.

He is clever but still just a kid handed down a responsibility of something bigger than him.

He as the other may have get this to work if they have know at some good portion each other and had a light weight of trust. But that wasn’t the case this time.

He is a piece on this game after all where he still may remain for a while while, or who knows?.

Okey so I finally end this mess, I did some doodles but most of all I wanted to go around this thing I may overthinking and so. i truly love gula for the many ways you can read though him slowly and maybe I can help but wish happiness for him or so I hope, because he as the others deserve a chance to learn many thing out of dutty and be more than just a piece of something that was set to be.

I don’t think he means bad but I wish he could have learn more, maybe if he were to connect with others he would have archive some progress with his way to be, I believe it may had to do with past experience but out of all, I wish i could know more on what he think out of all of been back. If he goes full change of banc I am going to cheer for him and even the other as sobbing, is just maybe that I see him and the other as humans as possible gets me soft but I wish each of them could work on their own issues with the time flow on them and encounters in the future

Geez I suck at this and just may go in circles but I think it maybe was good to remak.

(6) I guess I'm also not a fan of "Perfect Jedi Goddess Rey for whom Kylo has to crawl on his knees to be worthy of" (I can totally see why ppl like it tho), mainly because at this point, Kylo needs an equal, and not someone he'll always feel inferior too. I think the Throne Room proves that both of them still have some growing up to do in order to not only be together, but also understand each other better, bring out the best in each other, and being able to mature together in a healthy way.

Sorry, forgot to add this last part to the earlier post.

I think nobody wants Kylo to crawl. It was a popular concept like, 2-3 years ago, when Reylo shippers used to self flagellate (and flagellate Kylo) much more than we do now, half to deflect anti discourse and half because we really believed the best we could hope for was Rey not *completely* hating his guts by the end. Those days are gone. We know Kylo has his own reasons, because the narrative is showing them—it’s no longer a stretch or “reading too much into it” on our part. But the fact remains that Kylo is a villain and that, in order for this relationship to work, they’ll need to start being on the same page on something other than their mutual desire to be with each other. And I think it’s clear that, while Rey does have some growing up to do, her ethics are in the right place, while Kylo’s aren’t. It’s kind of unrealistic to expect Rey to move away from her heroic morals in the same way Kylo will have to move away from his villainous morals, so I don’t think it’s worth debating whether she should or not.

The whole “meeting halfway” thing is still possible, especially if you consider that, so far, they’ve essentially tried to abduct each other into their world, and failed. They both need to acknowledge and accept the fact that they might never “have” the other—not in the terms they currently think would be ideal. But Kylo has objectively more things to make up for. Many of those things have nothing to do with Rey per se, but became Rey’s business the moment she started to care for him.

re: your new round of asks:

(Rey discourse anon here) The problem is that for me, it’s really hard to tell whether Rey pulling the lightsaber away from Ben was her being cornered and knowing that what she’ll do will hurt Ben deeply – and for that, all I’m going to say is that, well, no, she literally did not have to do that. Again, it makes sense that she’d react this way, but the issue is that by reacting on impulse, like Luke did so many years ago, just like he played a part in making Kylo Ren,she played a part in making the Supreme Leader. Yelling at him and making her intentions clear was entirely possible, would have resulted in a similar outcome, and she decided not to. Because reasons. (Seriously, what is Ben going to do if she replies “no” out loud, kill her? *eyeroll*)

I’m not sure why you think yelling at him would have looked better in Kylo’s eyes, or what else Rey could have done to make her intentions clear, other than beg Kylo to stop firing on the Resistance, which she already had, loud and clear. Kylo perfectly understood what she was asking. He chose not to comply. Had his reasons. But chose to discard her plea.

Also, yes, she *literally* had to pull the saber. It’s her only weapon, and the girl needed one if she wanted to get the fuck out of the Supremacy alive. I think y’all forget she was in enemy territory, alone, unarmed, and in desperate need to get to Crait where there would probably be a huge battle within minutes. Yeah, she has the Force… but a lightsaber could help.

And frankly, no, I don’t think being morally right gives you a right or even merely an excuse to strike right into someone’s trauma.

Rey really did not do that—not on purpose (unlike Kylo, who totally used the parents card i.e. Rey’s own trauma and repressed painful memories to convince her to accept his offer). Note that Rey never actually got to wield the saber against Kylo—all she did was try to snatch it away from him. They could have gone for a clear cut Luke/Rey parallel by having Kylo regain consciousness to see an armed Rey looming over him, conflicted on whether to kill him or not. But they didn’t. This is absolutely important—Rey could have killed Kylo as he was unconscious, but chose not to. And Kylo never got to see her seriously considering to kill him.

Her face could frankly also be interpreted as “you’re not doing as I say, so screw you!”, and since the next scene we see her in is her woo-hoo-ing on the Falcon and then getting reunited with her buddies, there’s no indication she’s really all that heart-broken. Her closing the door on Ben could be seen that way as well (although I obviously think their story isn’t over, of course). Like… I dunno, it’s hard for me to feel sorry for her.

Her face when she’s slowly lifting her hand in the throne room scene doesn’t scream of “screw you!” to me. Neither does the little gasp in the last force bond. But YMMV.

The story could have been set up as “Rey did nothing wrong and Ben better beg on his knees in IX”, but it wasn’t. Because in the end, both Rey and Ben made their own bed, which leads me to be more “GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER YOU IDIOTS”. But this said, I do believe Rey’s heart was at the right place. She was indeed the catalyst that pushed Ben to finally get rid of his abuser. But realistically speaking, what she pulled off could have gone horribly wrong as well.My point is not that following your heart is always bad – but doing that all the time isn’t exactly a good idea either. Heck, Luke’s heart was at the right place when he went to save his friends in ESB, and he got beat up and lost his hand.

It might be not “exactly a good idea” but it’s still better than the alternative. (in Luke’s case, that would have been leaving his friends to die; in Rey’s case, not attempting to do anything for Kylo at all). These heroes tend to have their heroism challenged at the end of the second movie: they learn that sometimes having the best intentions isn’t enough. It’s an important lesson in humility. But not one that teaches them to follow their hearts a little less. See: Luke in RotJ, doubling down on compassion and being ready to risk his life not only to save his friends, but to redeem his father too.

And for Rey, it’s more than being an outsider: she’s the only person who had, like, an actual human reaction to Ben’s situation and actually did something to help.(Well, so did Han, but it was indeed a case of “too little, too late”, even if it definitely had a huge effect on Ben and made him start to realize Snoke was a PoS) But where she also failed is that just like everyone else, she came to Ben with a clear agenda in mind (or you know, an agenda to convince herself she’s totally doing this for the great cause, not because she wants The Beefcake), and with wanting to be the hero so bad she lost sight of what Ben really needs – a friend.I guess one thing that kind of annoys me at this point is that, honestly, who the heck knows what Ben’s motivations are, at this point, because his speech in the Throne Room could be interpreted in many ways. But I won’t lie by saying about it that if it just boils up to “Ra-Ra-First-Order”, I’ll be bored to tears. It’s not even a matter of saying “Ben was right all along” (because he obviously isn’t), you know, just something like“Ben is right when it comes to the endgame, or the intentions, or whatever, but his methods of getting to that are terrible”. What Rey has in mind is “we’ll help the Resistance together and build a new Jedi Order”, while having no clue whether Ben really wants that or not. I mean, he’s probably already not big on the idea because Rey might think the Resistance is great and all, but he knows they won’t be so nice to him, for obvious reasons.And it’s not even a matter of ideological differences or not – heck, maybe even in the old days with Luke, he flat out didn’t want to be a Jedi. Both of them need to find an outcome that they both want – and they’re obviously not at that point yet.

I don’t disagree with you on this last part, especially on the bolded. (See what I said earlier about meeting halfway.) But I do have a couple objections:

I don’t think Rey was at all trying to play the hero by coming to the Supremacy. If anything, she hoped Ben could be, so she could be relieved from the burden of being the galaxy’s last hope. And yeah, Ben might be in desperate need of a friend… but so is she, and it’s not exactly easy to be the perfect friend when a war is raging and you’re on opposite sides of the conflict, ykwim? This isn’t a normal situation.

I wouldn’t really count on Kylo’s endgame being shown in a sympathetic or redeeming light. Politically, his ideas (judging from the little we know of them) are a mess. But most importantly, in politics, the “means” count just as much as the “end” does. If your plan to reduce poverty includes, say, mass incarceration and operates on a racist logic, then your plan is bad, no matter how noble your goal is. If Kylo thought the best way to create his “new order” was using a militaristic, despotic war machine whose goal is forcing the galaxy to yield to their dictatorship and raze to the ground any dissenter, then either his idea of a new order isn’t ESPECIALLY democratic in the first place, or he just doesn’t understand politics at all. He can’t simply give up on his means. He needs to give up on his intended endgame as well.

Okita is a rather interesting character, occasionallypolarizing in fandom, and usually, unfortunately, boiled down solelyto his penchant for sadism or else being one half of a popular ship (I find thishappens a lot: people can’t view a character as an individual, they’re alwayslooking through their shipping glasses). He’s more nuanced than that.

(Before I forget: to the other Anon from last week, askingabout my thoughts on Oboro and Shouyou/Utsuro – I haven’t forgotten yourrequest, and I’m partly waiting until the anime has fully aired the Rakuyouarc.)

Another lengthy post, so under the cut it goes:

I like Okita. He’s the anti-hero type. You will usually findhim on the side that fights for the greater good, but he’s not exactly someonepeople will look up to and hail as a flawless saviour. He says what’s on hismind, whether people like it or not. He can be a rude jerk, a bit immature, andcertainly has sadistic tendencies. He’s not the sentimental type, and tends tohide his true feelings on various matters. He doesn’t care what people think ofhim and is absolutely loyal to Kondou. Sometimes the things he says about womenare not praiseworthy, although he still defers to Mitsuba (and I’d argue Tae,as well). He’s like an onion: layered with strong opinions and actions thatstink at times, but he also manages to make one cry when he shows greateremotional depth than people give him credit for. Maybe not literally cry (although some do), but I mean, togo with the onion metaphor, you know…he’s just more than what one sees on thesurface. (I’m so tired today, so onion was the first thing I thought of,although it is a rather common analogy.)

Anyway, he grew up spoiled by Mitsuba and praised for histalents as a sword prodigy. He was used to being adored and having everyone’sattention. That only continued when he met Kondou, and Kondou definitelyspoiled Okita a bit, too. Kondou is basically a father figure in Okita’s life,and Okita would do anything for him, even die for him. And then Hijikataentered the picture, and it’s clear that Okita didn’t like that Hijikata basicallytook the two most important people from him as Mitsuba’s love interest andKondou’s new friend/right-hand man. Hijikata is older, more experienced inlife, short-tempered but just as stubborn. We see a very relatable, human sideof Okita: jealousy, resentment, grudge-holding, etc. Add those traits intosomeone already spoiled and it probably won’t mix well.

This isn’t to say that Mitsuba raised Okita poorly. It’squite apparent that Okita has his own moral standards. As we see in the Rokkakuarc, he was willing to be the object of a girl’s hatred while taking the truthof an incident to the grave. As we see in the Shinsengumi Crisis arc, he won’tstand for anyone badmouthing or attempting to kill Kondou, and will kill evenhis former comrades – traitors – just to protect Kondou. He may slack off fromtime to time, but still takes his job seriously when it counts. He’d rather dothe right thing without anyone knowing or getting praised for it. He doesn’tlet people within his sight and reach die if he can help it, like Yamazaki andSoyo for example. Kondou and Hijikata still rely on him, as do the manysoldiers under Okita’s authority – and he’s the youngest member, so he isrespected to a certain degree for good reason aside from simply being aspectacular swordsman. He’s there defending Edo when it needs him.

Okita goes about at being noble in his own unorthodox way;his own brand of bushido.

It’s interesting to think about how Okita, Tae, and Kamui arethe same age, but very distinct from one another. Well, Okita and Kamui have more thingsin common. Okita was basically raised by the men who would become the Shinsengumi.He was young, impressionable, and surrounded by men who are rowdy and rougharound the edges, but stout-hearted in the end. Kamui was unitentionally raised by spacepirates in a place where all’s fair in love and warbecause they’re, well, pirates. Tae raised herself and Shinpachi for a longeramount of time in a stricter environment, having grown up in a dojo, oneprobably more formal than a countryside one. The differences are obvious.

I’m sure that while he was traveling with the guys, he wasteased here and there for being a kid in a light-hearted way. He probablylearned the best ways to get back at those who negatively underestimated him. He’slikely had to prove himself a lot to naysayers while growing up, inspiring himto work harder than everyone else in order to be the best and most skilled (andmaybe to outshine Hijikata, as well). Maybe that’s one reason why he’s sadistic at times - it’s satisfying to see others eat their words and crumble in defeat before him.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say Okita keeps people, emotionally,at bay. Leaving Mitsuba, the only blood family he truly knew, and then losingher was hard on him. It’s easier to live without the added burden of caring forpeople. I see him as the type who won’t abandon people, but will do so quicklyif needed (like he did on the train) with little remorse, and, again, it’s easier to do this when you’renot emotionally connected to somebody. There’s a difference between his bondswith Kondou and Hijikata compared the rest (although Yamazaki and Saitou arecertainly in the middle somewhere). It’s not to say he’s heartless, because heknows how much it hurts to lose someone you really care about. He’s generallyaloof and maintains his guard against most people with some exceptions (besidesthe Shinsengumi, there’s the Yorozuya and the way they butt into his life,inevitably). He’s careful and doesn’t trust easily (which makes him a goodprotector of Kondou).

I’ve already talked about Kondou and very little needs to besaid, as their bond hardly needs any added commentary. I want take a moment andtalk about Hijikata here. We all know the gag context between them, and it’samusing how Hijikata, at least ten years older, continues to fall for thetricks and taunts of a person he knows very well. Outside of that, in moreserious situations, as much as Okita likes to get on Hijikata’s nerves, theirconnection is still strong, though complicated. Okita hates what Hijikata didto Mitsuba, but he understands him, because it’s the kind of thing Okita wouldlikely do, as well – push somebody away in order to protect them. That’sprobably what irritates Okita the most – the fact that he does understand Hijikata. He knows that Hijikata, if not for his quirks,is the epitome of the ideal samurai, and a man all others fear and respect andobey without question. He knows why Mitsuba fell in love with Hijikata. Heknows why Kondou trusts and keeps Hijikata at his side. He knows that Hijikata iskind in spite of his gruff exterior.

Okita knows.

He’s compared himself to Hijikata before, and we know whatKondou thinks of that, as shown in the Mitsuba arc. Okita probably feels like an inferior brother, like he confessed to Mitsuba before she died. At times, Okita must’ve thoughtthat no matter what he did, he wouldn’t be as great as Hiikata in Mitsuba andKondou’s eyes – and he’s so very wrong about that, but, nonetheless, he hasbeen shown to think like that and he doesn’t bother trying to be more likeHijikata. All Okita can do is protect and fight and get along in life in thebest way he can, and follow Kondou wherever he goes. He knows he isn’t aflawlessly noble person and he doesn’t try to be. Okita simply is. And he still knows that he’simportant to Mitsuba and Kondou and can’t be replaced. He knows they would “jumpacross the ditch” for him, no matter how deep he digs it.

Plus, regarding Hijikata, I believe Okita would rather their relationshipstay the same as always. He won’t forget what Hijikata has done, but he won’tlet him die if he can help it, either. Okita definitely wants the spot next toHijikata, but he’d rather win it in an honest, proper way instead of throughItou’s betrayal or Hijikata dying needlessly. Doing so will have more meaningto the rest of the world, will show that he is capable and worthy of thatposition. I don’t believe Okita would really kill Hijikata just like that (especiallywhen he knows how much Kondou values Hijikata), but it’s fun for him to catchHijikata off his guard because Okita’s that kind of sadistic brat.

Instead of staying with Mitsuba, Okita went to assistHijikata, preferring not to lose two people at once when one is going to die nomatter what – and because Mitsuba told him to follow his path and stay true tohis convictions. When Nobume was going to strike Hijikata down, Okita wasquicker, halted and cracked her blade, and essentially told her that if shewanted to kill Hijikata, she would have to go through him first. As much as Okita loves Kondou and doesn’t want him todie, he did not move until Hijikatareturned to duty, because he knew Hijikata would come back and that they wouldgo together to save their cherished leader and friend. Okita respects Hijikata’sauthority when necessary. They just don’t need to act all buddy-buddy with eachother, and they would most likely balk at the merest thought of it.

Anyway, I don’t have much else to say. I thought this wouldbe a shorter reply, but I always end up talking more than is needed. Bottomline is – I think Okita is an interesting, complex, memorable character. Hisattitude could always use some adjusting when he’s purposely rude to others,but that’s Okita for you, the kid Kondou loves all the same, and the bratHijikata loses his cool over but would never abandon.

Adam is the writer of the small press comic The Secret Protectors (we reviewed issues 1&2 here and read our interview with them here)

Like many of us, Adam balances a job and writing, looking to grow creatively and get his story out into the world. What appealed to me about The Secret Protectors particularly is that it’s a raw work, finding its voice and style and watching Adam and Ben Nunn (the artist on the series) grow is as much a part of the story as the actual comic.

Secret Protectors

Can you tell us a bit about the first creator whose work you recognised?

Yeah of course, you know, I don’t think I realised it till I got a lot older, but the first creators who really left a lasting effect on me were Filmation (responsible for He-Man), Eastman & Laird who somehow thought up TMNT, along with Toei animation who created the Transformers cartoon. Perhaps even more important are husband and wife Eric & Julia Lewald, the two main creatives behind the X-Men animated series. That show, I can genuinely say, really taught me a lot and instilled in me morals I hold to this day. It was an absolutely great show! Crazy to credit that to a kids Saturday morning cartoon I know but I don’t think you can overestimate how important our younger years are in defining the adults we’ll grow in to.

Which creators do you remember first copying?

I remember as a kid playing with my action figures and it was never enough to just have the good guys facing off against the bad guys for the sake of a cool battle. I can vividly remember trying to create the Secret Wars storyline with my figures. Instead of just Marvel characters though I’d have Turtles there as well, along with a bunch of other figures. I remember I couldn’t include Transformers or Thundercats though! They didn’t scale well! It would have been ludicrous to include them too! As for my adult years, I’ve tried to not outright copy anyone of course but at this point I’ve so many influences that play into my storytelling approach.

Who was the creator that you first thought ‘I’m going to be as good as you!’?

Woah, tough one that! Creatively I’ve always wanted to try and have my own way. As a small press indie guy, I’m not sure its about trying to be better than someone else. I think it’s more about improving your craft, learning from your mistakes and growing as a person to improve your work!

Which creator or creators do you currently find most inspiring?

There’s so many! If I had to narrow it down, I guess I’d have go with a top 5 format, so:

David Chase – The creator of, in my opinion, the best TV series ever – The Sopranos. It’s been labelled all kinds of superlatives, I’m not sure I can really add anything to the list. I’ve heard it described as an 86hr film, which is probably about right. It just never misses a beat and the storytelling is just so deep and rich. It’s the only series I’ve ever watched over from start to finish more than once. I’ll definitely been watching it a third time at some point in my life!

Spawn 300 by Todd McFarlane

David Simon – The man is responsible for a bunch of incredible TV series, such as The Wire, Show Me a Hero & The Deuce. I’m a pretty unemotional guy but Simon is phenomenal at drawing you in emotionally before then absolutely crushing you. Show Me a Hero in particular left me completely exhausted.

Christopher Nolan – He’s just never made a bad film, in fact, I’d argue literally all his work is top drawer stuff. Not only does he tell original, amazing stories, he does it in a way that is normally a way you’ve never been shown a story before.

Todd McFarlane – When Todd left Marvel and started up Image, he, along with the other founders of Image changed the industry forever. In Spawn, he has the longest running independent comic of all time and on a personal note, anytime I see an interview with him he just seems so humble and grounded. He worked his absolute arse off to get where he is and to improve himself. He’s gone from aspiring, struggling artist to a one-man empire! He makes comics, films and toys! The man must never sleep!

Chris Claremont – The man wrote X-Men for 25 years! The longevity and quality of his work is pretty much unparalleled. To quote the great late Stan Lee ‘Nuff said’.

There’s plenty more but this is a pretty good representation.

Which creators do you most often think about?

I actually try not to really! I’d end up depressing myself by comparing myself to someone on top of the, figurative, mountain that I’d love to ascend! I kid, of course! That’s a tough one. I try to focus on being better personally. Just keeping my head down and doing ‘me’.

Can you name the first three creative peers that come into your head and tell a little bit about why?

Sure, first up! Matt Stapleton – The mind behind What If? Stories. He’s such a great guy! He’s one of those people whose enthusiasm is just unrelenting! Some might find that jarring but it’s honestly infectious! In a good way! He’s so positive when taking on a challenge, like his recent Kickstarter for instance, he smashes it! If you’ve got a dream and want to make it happen, surround yourself with individuals like Matt. People who dream and believe!

Ben Nunn – The second half of The Secret Protectors duo. Ben’s great! We’ve been working together now on The Secret Protectors since 2017. We’ve both developed a lot since then but Ben’s improvement is remarkable. He’s never happy with his work and he’s constantly looking to do better. If I let him, he’d probably completely redo issue 1! Hahaha!

Lastly. My wife! Kate Wheeler. Now, she’s not a typical creative. She is an actress but she’s not currently working. She had to get a real job to pay the bills unfortunately. But she is my muse. She’s the only reason I developed the belief needed to go out there and get my comic made in the first place! She is my number one confidant, partner, friend and consigliere! The Silvio to my Tony Soprano so to speak.

Finally, can you tell us a bit about your recent work and yourself?

I’d love to shamelessly plug my Kickstarter which is Live right now! It’s for my comic book series The Secret Protectors! It’s Ben and mine’s take on the superhero genre. There’s sci-fi and fantasy aplenty but it’s more about the drama and tension between the characters themselves! It’s the story I feel I’m here to tell, essentially. There’s not a day that passes that I don’t think about it in some way, shape or form! It’s definitely my burden to carry! My curse!

I also recently wrote the short story ‘The Ville’ – download The ‘Ville – By Adam Wheeler. Completely different to anything comic related. To be honest, I just wanted to challenge myself to make something up new. Something that was a complete departure. Just to prove that I could, more than anything.

As for me, I’m Adam Wheeler a 35-year-old male. I’ve been creating & crafting stories since I can remember, not that anyone ever asked me too. I’m not so interesting. I’m just a working-class guy with aspirations. Cliché I know but it’s the best backstory I could come up with for myself.

Do you care?

In Defence of Utilitarianism

Let’s begin with a bold statement. If you care above all about the happiness of all living beings you are a liberal. If you think something else is more important then you are not.

In a way we could end the book right there. That is why liberalism matters because it is about caring about well being, caring about all living beings.

The insult thrown back at this stance is ‘Bleeding Heart Liberal’. Like all the best insults it contains a grain of truth with it’s suggestion that the caring is an affectation.

But what if the caring is genuine? Then the idea of criticising it seems repugnant, at least to a liberal.

So what else might be more important than the well being of all living beings? Yourself? Your God? Your community? Justice? Power? Accomplishment? Science?

We need to explore each of these and more to see if the statement stands up to scrutiny but before we do that we need to examine the statement itself a little.

First off there is the choice of the word happiness. David Hume talked about utility, Jeremy Bentham about happiness, and John Stuart Mill pleasure. I am not too bothered which word we use, none is perfect because each one comes with slightly different connotations. But what they have in common is that they point towards pleasure, well-being, satisfaction, comfort, absence of pain and suffering in life.

Hopefully it is clear in the statement that we are interested in maximising this.

Then there is the phrase ‘all living beings’. That includes ourselves, our family, our community, other living people, other animals, plants, fungii, bacteria and whatever other branch of living thing I am too biologically ignorant to list. It also includes all future living beings and if you press me all past living beings though there is not much we can do for them.

Finally let’s look at that part of the statement ‘care above all’. This does not preclude caring for other things. I can care about my football team’s result on Saturday, but if I am fanatic enough to wreck someone else’s life to achieve the right result, most people will conclude I am not a liberal but a nutter.

What’s so good about happiness?

In my opinion this is a good question and one there is no answer to really. Some things just seem to be that way, like gravity.

Try imagining the following and hopefully you will see what I mean:

We have accomplished incredible feats but we are filled with despair.

We have accomplished nothing but everyone is happy.

Our politics is rightfully and perfectly ordered but everyone is suffering.

Our politics is a mess and everyone is carefree and joyous.

Injustice has been eradicated in the world and everyone is deeply depressed.

Injustice is rife but no-one is suffering as a result in fact everyone is perfectly contented.

Everyone is perfectly following the one true faith but everyone is miserable.

No-one follows any faith but is happy.

Some might seem incongruous like injustice and happiness going together, but would you seriously choose any that involved suffering and misery?

If you choose anything over happiness and pleasure, at best it just seems weird and at worst evil.

It seems that although accomplishments, order, justice and religious faith are, or potentially are great things, if they lead to misery they are worthless.

To be clear I am not saying these other things do lead to misery but only that they are really a means to an end and the end is always happiness, well-being, absence of suffering, whatever you want to call it. I suppose biologically it is hard wired into our DNA to value happiness and well being over everything else.

Unfortunately happiness is a vague term because it encompasses different emotions. It includes an emotional high where you are smiling, laughing and filled with the joys of life but there are of course other types of happiness like the idea of being happy in one’s job which is not about a feeling of elation but more about being relaxed, aligned with your role, your environment and the people around you.

So to be clear we are not only talking about some flash in pan moment of joy although that is always a bonus, we are talking about alignment, ease, absence of suffering.

Me and my folk

As I have already made clear caring for the happiness of all living beings, includes me and my folk.

And whilst in a perfect world I might make ethical decisions that treat my well being, my family’s well being or my community’s well being any differently from people I don’t know or an amoeba 200 million years hence, we have to recognise that it is more logical to treat them differently because we simply don’t know nearly as much about these other living beings.

There is something fundamentally important about me looking after my happiness. For one thing, I can do a much better job of it than anyone else. I also relieve others from the responsibility. If I can take care of my family’s well-being that is also great because now I am providing well-being for others and again I am much better placed to do that than some stranger to my nearest and dearest. I also know my community and my folk better than someone from outside my community, so probably I will be able to look after their happiness better than someone else.

What I am trying to point out is that there is nothing wrong with this, it is important and it would be madness to equate my ability to make good choices about the happiness of my family with my ability to make good choices about the happiness of someone else half way around the world I have never met. Looking after oneself and one’s own is therefore not inherently inconsistent with utilitarianism which is the branch of ethics we are talking about.

Where it gets screwed up is when it is clear that looking after one’s interests is at the cost of someone else’s and I don’t stop to consider that and whether there is way for me to get what I want without them losing out, or whether their suffering is greater than my pleasure.

All of this is pretty basic really, it is what we teach children in nursery. But a lot of serious criticism is leveled at Utilitarianism on this point. As we will see the serious criticism often ends up in some fairly extreme ‘what if’ scenarios. An example here might be along the lines of: you live in a flat in London worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, if you are serious about being a utilitarian why not sell your flat and donate the proceeds to Sightsavers UK thereby restoring thousands of people’s sight? Ok you will make yourself destitute and throw your family onto the street, but you will transform the lives of thousands of people.

But this ignores quite a few things. I know the unhappiness my family and I will experience from being made homeless. I certainly have no problem imagining the prolonged pain and suffering I will experience doing this to my wife and children. How happy will it make those thousand people? How long will that happiness last? How much suffering are they in now? Are we saying that all blind people are living in misery? Will all of them stop suffering? Would they want me to be homeless to give them their sight? Isn’t there another way I can help all those people that doesn’t involve me and my family being homeless? All of these are valid questions in the judgment I must make about which course of action will maximise happiness.

That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t consider it. I should. But the ethical utilitarian answer now seems less clear cut.

Often when you look at these what if scenarios that are put forward to disprove the ethics of utilitarianism, you find that utilitarianism does in fact give you the ethical course of action but it is not obvious at first glance. It needs some thought and digging under the surface of things. This is actually one of the great strengths of the philosophy, though perhaps also one of its great weaknesses.

In the above example, I would say the real reason why it is not ethical for me to sell my house to restore the sight of thousands of people is that the fabric of society depends on most people living sustainable pleasant lives. If my life falls apart and so does my family what resources will others feel they need to give us to support us? We add to the burden on society in the process of relieving it. What is clearly preferable is that we pool our resources to get these people’s sight restored, that we make a collective effort. It is more sustainable and no-one needs to suffer in the process.

Or it could be I am deluding myself. Maybe I should be selling my house, maybe it is clear to you that this would increase happiness in the world. The fact that I don’t do it, does not disprove the value of caring about well being. It may just prove my morals are as compromised as the next man.

Does this mean my happiness is worth more than someone else’s? No. But it does acknowledge that there are different levels of risk at play when I make decisions about myself or my family and other people. If I am making a calculation about maximising happiness that involves me and others, I have to also evaluate my risk in getting my calculation wrong about the impact on my own well being and others. If I am 95% certain a course of action will make me happy but only 50% certain the opposite will make someone else a bit happier, I should make myself happy. In that way of operating I will maximise happiness over time.

So far we have remained at the level of our personal choices, the individual and our family. But this book is about politics and that is where we must turn next.

Everyone Else

Finding a way to be happy as an individual is hard. Finding a way to provide your family with happiness and fulfilment is also no small undertaking. So trying to take decisions that bring well-being to a nation or the world is fairly mind-boggling.

One big argument for ditching the collective well-being as a guiding light for decision making is that it is simply too difficult. Inherently there is the certainty that my assumptions about what will make others happy are bound to flawed. I am bound to superimpose my own bias for what makes me happy on others, I am bound to think about my community before anyone else’s.

Even if I could free myself of my bias the time it would take to evaluate and compare the effect on everyone else’s happiness would be prohibitive. By the time I got to the right answer, the world will have moved on.

To me all this is true, but no reason for abandoning our guiding light. Yes we will fail, yes it will be hard work, yes it is all subjective, yes we will never have time to do it properly, but if we abandon our guide think of the damage we could do.

Probably we are going to need some rules of thumb and short cuts in our endeavour which is what the second part of this book covers.

But most of all, if we make maximising happiness our aim, it forces us to consider the consequence of our actions, it makes us think about how they will affect others, it will lead us to listen to others about their opinion about the actions we are considering.

So it turns out that our philosophy’s big problem, is also it’s great strength. It’s not easy to do the right thing. It takes hard work, but the outcomes, however imperfect they are, will be better for the effort. And what is clear is that choosing to ignore other’s well being is going to result in some truly awful outcomes.

At this point in an argument about the merits of utilitarianism, someone usually brings up persecution of minorities. The challenge goes something along the lines of:

‘What if it becomes clear that the majority will be really happy and contented from persecuting a minority whose unhappiness is real but puny in comparison.’

The Nazis and Hitler’s popularity will often get a citation.

To deal with this objection we have to think about the nature of happiness and contentment. First off there is a big difference in between the unhappiness that someone who is persecuted and abused will experience, and the pleasure the general populace might get as a result.

Very few people will experience intense joy frequently in their lives. And the moments when it arrives tend to be passing by their nature. However it is possible to live with intense pain, fear and despair for prolonged periods and commonly if you are being persecuted.

Secondly persecution is about domination, it requires justifying a self righteous anger at or superiority over the persecuted.

We may mourn the loss of a thing of beauty, mourn the loss of habitat for other animals and plants we love, despair at the impact the destruction of the environment may have on our children’s lives. But all that is a separate matter to our evaluation of the suffering experienced by the tree itself.

If we can see no real effect either way, don’t cut down the tree because although we have no real understanding of what suffering a tree may experience, it seems likely that it there is more suffering involved in being cut down than continuing to live.

Animals, especially those with more intelligence do show clear signs of suffering. If you hit a dog, you need to be in denial not to see it suffering. Therefore I am much less inclined to ignore the suffering of a dog in my ethical decisions. But I do also accept that however much suffering I infer from the look on the face of a dog that has just been hit, no dog has ever been able to tell us what it is experiencing and so I have less certainty to their suffering than I have of my fellow human.

When I look at ethics this way, I see some justifiable anger at liberals. Are there times when we have prioritised the suffering of animals and plants over humans? I think so. And worse, we have probably been ultimately motivated out of self interest about our own likes and dislikes.

That said, it is much more common that we ignore the suffering of animals. We have industrialised animal torture for our own gratification of eating meat in a way that is indefencible. We should not ignore this suffering. Nor should we ignore our pleasure of eating meat.

The truly liberal response is to try and find a way to avoid the torture whilst maintaining the pleasure and if there is no way, in my opinion we need to stop the torture because it is much more significant than the pleasure.

As ever the point with liberalism is to look beyond the surface of things and make an honest attempt to resolve things in such a way that produces most happiness and the least suffering.

hey journal,

im not fine. but im trying to be. or at least trying to pretend that im fine.

im surprisingly good at pretending im fine when im not. the reality is, i still feel so miserable. i tried to just drown my sorrows away in the form of food and YouTube videos and i am left feeling just as empty as I did on Saturday. Listening to, “I’m Fine” over and over and over has allowed me to at least try and convince myself that im fine.

i am upset with Amanda but it’s not because of anything she did wrong so i dont want to tell her why. im trying to protect the people i care about. i know im being irrational and just overthinking all of this and i just need to solve it and get over it to preserve my image and be of the utmost help for other people.

i dont want to tell jason how im feeling bc im worried he’ll just get mad and i know ive been too reliant on him in the past and i feel bad that i wasnt able to help him in the same way. i was sad he got more letters than me in his journal? well hes also just a better person than me. a part of me feels like i deserve the same amount, if not more letters than him because i put so much more effort into movement than he did. he never came out to the bible studies or prayer meetings and missed a whole bunch of sundays and i did my best to come out to every sunday and saturday and have been active on tuesdays. i feel like i do and sacrifice so much for movement but in the end, it doesnt even matter.

i feel really broken and i dont know why.

but ultimately, i know jason did better than me. bc he actually genuinely cared. i was just trying to prove i was worth something. i didnt act out of care. i acted out of pride. and people knew. their job isnt to reach out to me and give me a pat on the back for all the things ive done. their job has been to receive and act naturally in accordance with how God wants them to live. and i havent encouraged them. ive judged them. did i even do anything worthwhile this past year besides just leeching off other people? was i just a shitty person entirely?

im fine.

even when jason did feel down in the dumps, he still did care for them. i didnt. i just pushed people away.

i tried to be transparent and open and for what?

i think it encouraged joyce to speak up a couple times maybe. and i am glad david prayed for me. but as a whole, did i really ever do anything meaningful or worthwhile? or was it just all for show to make myself feel better.

i feel like im losing amanda.

i dont want her to feel bad for me or reach out to me just because she can. i want to actually be loved and cared for and i dont believe she does feel that way towards me anymore. i feel like ive been left behind. again.

and i know this was never her intention and i do genuinely want her to be happy which is why im journaling about all this instead of telling her how i feel. because i dont want her to feel guilty for the choices she made and i do genuinely want her to be happy. i know that she has been quietly suffering for a long time now and i do really want her to get better and if she is encouraged and challenged to do that through Johnathan, then so be it. I would rather she get help, even if it isnt from me. i do really care for her and love her and i want to write her and the rest of the MAST members a letter soon but i cant think super clearly right now.

i just keep beating myself up over and over and over for the things that i couldve done better. i couldve been a better friend. i couldve been more open. more attentive. more caring. more understanding. more open-minded. but i didnt.

and i guess the only thing to do from here is move on and look forward and figure out what i can do better.

i want to know what i can do better and the areas in which i fell short but im also so scared of finding out bc i already hate myself so much anyway and being told what i failed at would only add to this already heavy burden.

im fine.

i also just feel really bad because i feel like im taking such a huge step back by pushing people away and isolating myself. i know i have grown a lot this past year and i have been able to become more trusting of those around me and it has been really nice to know that i am cared for and loved by others. and in acting like how i am now, im worried pjosh and other people wont be proud of me anymore or the ways that i have grown.

have i even really grown at all? or was i always just forcing myself to make a different choice but now im just reverting back to how i naturally handle things? i dont want to disappoint them. i dont want to seem like a failure.

and God, i want to rely on you. I really do. But I can’t. Because at the end of the day, as much as I want to believe you and trust you and your pain, I really can’t understand why you’ve let me be in and put me through so much suffering and for so long. What did I do to deserve so much misery? I can’t handle it on my own anymore. I really can’t. It’s consuming me from the inside out.

i really want to call amanda and just clear everything up with her and be honest with her but i also dont want to hurt her. i know i can be too open and share too much and i dont want people to think something is mentally wrong with me bc that just means people will always look at me differently and pity me and never actually see me as human and i dont want that.

when i asked amanda what we should do with our small group and proposed hanging out in evanston instead, i was hesitant to ask at all because i knew what the “right” move to make was and wasnt sure if we should just opt for the easier route so more people could come.

and i was worried she would just say it’d be better for more people to come so we should just all meet in evanston instead. i was surprised when she actually mentioned how the original agreement was to meet in chinatown so thats what she wanted to do. and with that, i pushed for chinatown again and was thoroughly surprised when david actually decided to come through and travel with us. and i was really happy we all got to spend that time together. it was only once and i was so discouraged everyone bailed last minute. but the fact seoyeon and david did come was really heartwarming and encouraging to me. and it was for her too. our kids are growing up.

im also salty that a good handful of our members wished for more small group outings. which, i understand. but, i feel like theyre discrediting the fact that amanda and i really tried to plan outings but things fell apart bc of their schedules a lot of the time. whether it was bc people backed out last minute or we couldnt find a time when we were all free or people half hearted committed but flaked out when the time actually came closer and didnt took it as seriously. i get that other groups, especially p. josh’s, had more hangouts and i am genuinely happy for them. and maybe our group wanted to have more fun times like that.

was i just too serious this past year? and i didnt have as much fun as amanda? i always perceived her non-seriousness as a bad thing bc i thought she was just using it as a front to cover how much pain she was actually in. when she cried with me and actually shared her fears and insecurities, i felt how genuine that was. her normal “fake” personality didnt seem genuine to me. but maybe i was wrong. she does seem genuinely happy now. and im happy for her too.

i know i have a big mouth and have spoken when it wasnt my place to and i am getting better at managing it. i just didnt realize shutting my mouth would hurt me so much.

everytime jason has given me one of these “talks” on what i can work on, i end up feeling more hurt than challenged to do better. and i am actively trying to work on everything he told me to do and i know he told me out of a place of care. but now i just feel so paranoid that i am constantly being judged and messing up in ways that im not even aware of. and it sucks.

but i also dont want jason to not tell me ways i can improve bc i do genuinely want to know and how to grow and get better.

i had the opportunity to go to northwestern and hangout with familiar people again yesterday but i didnt go. because i was afraid of seeing amanda and johnathan there. and i was afraid of feeling left out.

even though i didnt know anyone on the softball team and i was the only college student there, it was so much easier for me to be happy with them. i made friends and i didnt care what i said or how i was being perceived. i just did my best to boost our team’s morale and cheer everyone on and that made me feel genuinely better. even if it was just for a few hours. i didnt care how i acted and chances are, i wouldnt interact or even see them ever again. or at least not for a while. but with the college kids, i dont understand why it’s so hard for me to be real with them. i am so much more afraid of being judged and gossiped about bc i know i have to keep working with them and i will see them again the next sunday. or the next. or the next. or the next.

i got along really with songbee the other day and being friends with her makes me feel like im betraying jason bc i know he doesnt get along with her very well.

I told them that it isn't accurate for them to base dwelling coverage on market price because the replacement cost must be lower since market price includes land and profits the builder makes. Long story short, they convinced me to stay at $183 because they said costs were rising and so forth. I decided not to fight it. Fast forward to this year, and now they are proposing to increase the dwelling coverage to $203k (11% increase). Funny thing is that for my exact townhome model, about 20 units were sold in the last year with prices averaging in the upper $180s (slightly above what I paid). I called the insurance company to let them have a piece of my mind, and they told me they use an independent 3rd party company to price the replacement costs. I told them it's BS because it's way above average market price and replacement costs is always below market price. They asked me to send them documents from when I purchased the home that details the construction materials used and upgrades so that they can reevaluate the dwelling coverage. My question is, why is the burden of proof on me to prove to the insurance company that dwelling coverage should be lowered? Why can't they just reduce it to what I tell them to reduce it to? After all, I am the customer who pays for the insurance. If my house is ever destroyed and I underinsured, that's my problem not theirs. My grandfather, who is 72 years old, needs round-the-clock care that has now exceeded our capabilities. He suffers from pre-existing bad to severe dementia. He's suspicious, falls frequently, very forgetful, suffers from sundowning. He just doesn't know what to do and he even struggles with basic life functions. He also suffers from lymphatic cancer that metastasized to his lung and chest cavity, as well as squamous cell carcinoma that is very resistant to all his previous treatment and has spread to open wounds on his arm. Because all of his lymph nodes were removed, his lymphatic fluid constantly pools in that arm and swells to hugely abnormal size. Therefore he has to wear a sleeve to keep it in place, which is painful for him to put on and is time-consuming for his caregiver. He also is supposed to keep his arm elevated, but refuses because of his dementia. He is mean and hateful at times and insists that we are trying to kill him and is always demanding that his caregiver (my aging and stressed grandmother) remain at his side at all times, or he grows suspicious about her fidelity. He has hallucinations. We moved in with them to help her take care of him, but my school work (homeschooled, mainly to take care of them) and my mother's commute to work have also taken a toll on us. We hated to think about it, but we finally resolved that he belongs as a permanent resident in a home. The biggest problem is the astronomical cost which we can't just chip together , as it was never there in the first place. We did research on nursing home coverage and found out about long term care coverage. We found out some basic things like it is best to purchase at a young age. Unfortunately, my grandmother was never educated on insurance and doesn't possess significant life insurance nor anything like long-term care, and he doesn't qualify for the little help Medicaid offers. Although he suffers from cancer, he has reached the end of his treatment. His cancer was too resistant to all prospective radiation and chemotherapy, and the anti-body treatment that he tried, he had a massive allergic reaction to. He has awful pain all the time and is on a rotated regimen of extra strength ibeproufen and high dosage morphine, with a high grade fentanyl pain patch. So, although cancer plays a part in his insurance qualification in name, apart from being administered his medication and sleeve, his cancer is not the main concern as far as his care/treatment goes. We have had to accept that he is going to die sooner or later and are trying to find the best final preparations. Bentonite clay seems to be drawing out some of the side effects of his radiation (after which his cancer got worse), and so may prolong his life. The short prognosis was 2-9 months. His dementia have become exhausting and endless. There's simply nothing we can do anymore. He's on prescription for Aricept for the dementia and we give him melatonin for the sundowning, which seems to have a calming effect. Sorry for the long piece, but we're all very distressed about this and I felt that I had to give a thorough explanation of his ailments and treatment. Our needs are a long-term stay in a nursing home facility covering skilled care for his dementia, activities of daily living, ect. We also hope that he can be treated with respect and dignity. We need affordable prices like anyone else in the middle class, not astronomical rates. We also need a policy that would either cover pre-existing without penalizing for it or not asking health questions, ect., as my grandfather is obviously in need of care we can't offer him. The only policy we have even brushed upon is Physicians Mutual. We don't know anything about it really, and we don't know where to look for anything else. Everything seems to lead to a dead end online when we need a solution. Any help is greatly appreciated.""
