This load is a picture of why so many people leave trucking, don’t recommend it to others and refuse to get into the industry.

I loaded last Friday in Ocala Fl. Once loaded, and on the way to Orange MA, I called the site contact to confirm delivery. He was very quick to inform me it would not deliver Monday due to the customer ignoring his requests for a ship date for over a week. He couldn’t schedule a crane Friday afternoon for Monday morning. After some phone calls a decision was made for me to bring the load home and sit on it until a crane appointment is made.

I arrived home Saturday morning. Monday late afternoon I was informed the crane was scheduled for Friday morning and I needed to be there at 0800. So Wednesday morning I left home and headed to MA.

Friday I arrive on site at 0750 and was informed the crane wasn’t arriving until 0830. Sometime around 0900 the crane still wasn’t on site, but the trucks carrying the counterweights had arrived. The new ETA for the crane was 1000. In this time period I was informed that the crane was scheduled for 0800 and I wasn’t supposed to be on-site until 0900.

At 0930 the crane arrived and the three trucks supporting the crane were unloaded and the crane was set up by 1030. I back in and unchain. While doing this the rigging supervisor decided he didn’t like the lift points thinking they were to light, or not thick enough. After some pictures and a conversation with the manufacturer they decided to try lifting it. Now it’s 1130.

At this point we had to cancel a load we were supposed to pick up in PA going to GA that payed very well. Due to the shipper having a 1400 cut off time we had to cancel before the crane was set up. The next load has a 1600 cutoff in North Plainfield NJ which is 4.5 hours from where I was sitting. By the time I was unloaded, took pictures, sent in paperwork and got traffick and parked cars moved it was 1200 when I left. Being the traffic hell hole the north east is on a Friday afternoon I ran into the inevitable heavy traffic and was not going to make the next pickup by 1600. Now it doesn’t load until Monday morning and delivers in Iowa Wednesday morning.

So now a load that was supposed to load Friday and deliver Monday allowing us to get loaded so I could be home for Thanksgiving is postponed until Monday and delivering Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving. Thus I will be on the road for Thanksgiving this year. Hopefully we can get reloaded so I’m not sitting through the holiday weekend.

Now the problem. In trucking when there are delays like this you can get compensation for downtime, but not nearly the same amount you would make running under a load. The time I spent home at the beginning of the week payed me about half my average earning potential. The wait time Friday probably won’t be payed by the broker and absolutely will not be paid by the crane service. The 5 hours waiting to load in Florida, we were only paid for 2 of those hours. The weekend I’m spending sitting in Bordentown NJ is not paid and the neither the crane crew that caused us to miss two loads not the contractors on site will pay for the down time and missed loads. Now two weeks of earning for myself and my company have been ruined. Finally no one will compensate the driver for being stuck on the road half the country away from home on a major holiday.

So ask yourself this, in an industry that touches everything at least once from raw material to delivery to where you buy it, and is so vital to our way of life and national security, why would anyone want to get into this career?

ElleWulfTaxidermy scammed me out of a $700 commission, along with who knows how many others. I don’t know if I’ll ever see my pelt again, but I’m posting it with the fear that she might sell it and to warn others in case she comes back. 

I commissioned Elle back in April of 2020 for a custom soft mount. Her portfolio featured works like this: 

For the first month, she was incredibly responsive and shared progress shots. 

On June 10, she messaged me discussing “health complications” and that she would be working on the pelt when she visited her partner. She then updated me on July 13, saying, “Hi there! Just letting you know that I am recovering from some health issues and am taking a small break from work. Luckily your fox is almost done either way so she should be sent out soon after I’m back on my feet. Thanks!”

I responded with support and well wishes. She did not message me again until August 15, vaguely mentioning that she was “dealing with a relapse” of one of her illnesses. She posted this on Instagram on August 20th:

 General life update. I disappeared off of Instagram and Discord for about 2 months, and am back with some news and changes. Firstly, yes I’m okay. Being ill and disabled gets in the way often, and it decided to take it’s toll these past few months - so I was pretty much forced to put everything down and take a long break. Spent the time at my partner’s house (I’m still here for 2 days) and will continue working when I’m back in Alabama. Thank you so much to those who have been waiting for me, it’s well appreciated. I learned that while doing taxidermy gives me great joy, I simply cannot handle doing it as a job. The money, the timing, and every little thing makes my anxiety flare up to no end. And with my poor mental health, there’s no telling how long this would last. But I guess it has ended now. As of now, I am quitting. I am no longer doing commissions of any sort. This will force me to slow my own collection and personal pieces as well, but that is what’s best. I am obviously finishing up my current mounts, but after this I am done. I will only do this as a hobby until further notice. If people are curious for details, feel free to DM.

She did not message me personally, so the Instagram post is all I had. I gave her space to respond until I decided to message her at the end of August. Then, this is the only communication we had (posting as text for ease of viewing):

Oct 16, 2020 Me: Please get back to me if you can. I’ve been getting worried about receiving her and want to know when I’m supposed to expect her. :(

After not hearing from her for a week after my last message, I filed a request with Etsy to investigate. Literally three minutes after the claim was filed, Elle messaged me.

Issue: I haven't received it Ideal resolution: Receive pelt + refund for any unfinished work I haven't heard anything from you in several weeks and am unsure what to do. I don't know what's going on and just want to talk about any potential solution we could reach. I'd rather have the pelt than a refund, she's very special and I've been waiting months to get her, but I need to know if getting her to me is an option at this point.

Elle: Hi there, I’m so so sorry. I just got out of the hospital a few days ago and was away from my phone. The situation was urgent and I was not able to reach out to clients. Your fox is still in my possession and will be finished. I know I have said this many times, yet a lot of personal factors have been implemented which has made work hard. Even with that said, the time it’s taken to get her finished is still not appropriate. But now that I’m out of the hospital, I’ll definitely keep at work. She’s very close to being finished - she only needs her legs 

Me: I understand, but this isn't an issue spanning just a few days when my messages have been ignored for weeks and I'm not the only person who's been having similar issues, I can only assume the worst when I haven't been spoken to at all or given any updates in months. Either you can send her to me as-is without having to work on her more with a partial refund so it's over with and you don't have to work more, or we can figure out a day to have her done and shipped by and I can get picture updates because I'm just starting to worry and I don't think it's fair that I had to escalate to filing a case for you to message me at all to let me know anything about the situation.

Elle: I know. I really do apologize. I can send you images later this morning or afternoon - she’s here with me. Due to a lot of personal circumstances, doing any work at all has been hard. But that still doesn’t excuse the fact that I’ve been slacking with sending updates. I really am sorry about the situation. I’ve only now been able to work out the logistics of getting everything done and sent out. She’ll be finished soon, especially the fact that she only has to get a few little things done (paws and legs). Once again, I am majorly sorry. You can expect her to be shipped out relatively soon.

She sent me pictures on October 31st, showing that she had not done any work on her since the very first pictures she sent me back at the beginning of May. 

On November 6th, she told me that “due to an abundance of doctor appointments and health-related matters, it will take that extra time.” 

I had been supportive and patient throughout this entire process. 2020 was a difficult year for everyone, and this is a commission I expected to take a while anyway. I am no stranger to disability or illness, physical or mental. I decided to pursue a refund with Etsy once the situation seemed beyond resolution, but since they cap their refunds at 100 days past the estimated shipping date, they were unable to provide me a refund for the near $700 I spent on this commission. Effectively, Elle had strung me along for so long without any indication of planning to send me this pelt finished or unfinished that I could no longer file for a refund with PayPal OR Etsy. This was our next correspondence:

Me: Don't work on her anymore and send her as-is. This is obviously something that has been causing issues for months without any communication and I have no other frame of reference except promises falling through. I'm requesting a partial refund for unfinished work and asking that you please do not keep working on her. I just want to have the pelt at this point and to have some of my money back after waiting for so long for something that I can't even guarantee will be in my hands because I don't know if I can trust you. I can't even escalate to Etsy directly because it has been over 100 days, they don't help with orders past then, and at this point literally all I can do is beg you to respond to any of my prior requests that you haven't responded to other than with vague promises. Please send her as-is and work out with me what percentage is unfinished so that we can close this.

Me: I'm going to need the projection for the refund within 48 hours, or I'm going to have no choice at this point but to contest the charge with my bank.

My bank refused to issue a refund because the payment was through PayPal and not my actual debit card. She never responded to my message at the end of November, and I received no correspondence from her until Christmas Eve. While Etsy refused to issue me a refund, they locked her account as a seller so she could not sell the other listings she still had up until she resolved the issue with me. Elle: This is a copy + paste message. Each individual will be spoken to after this has been sent. Hi there. I wanted to greatly apologize for my disappearance and lack of communication for the past few months. It is completely inappropriate and uncalled for. I have been struggling with my health, and as of recently my conditions have gotten much worse. I am sending full refunds to everybody as I am no longer in working conditions. I am so terribly sorry. If it’s a commission, I will give you a full refund and the pelt (no matter how far in the mount is). If it’s a trade, I am sending your part back. Regardless, you are getting what you sent to me in the first place. After this has been sent, I will answer any questions and concerns + we will work out the ins and outs of getting you your money back. Once again - I am so sorry. I had no idea things would get to this point with my personal life.

Again, I understand the money issues and stress that comes with hospital bills and life in general. I was also terrified that if I did not compromise and tell her not to worry about the money, just give me the pelt, that I would never see my pelt again. I told her to ship me the pelt, and that I did not want money.  I never heard from her again. The messages at the start of this post are the last things we ever talked about. All I want is to have my pelt back. I didn’t want to slander an up and coming taxidermist, to have to make a post like this. She has been vague, unresponsive, and has straight-up lied to me several times and taken advantage of my good faith until I could no longer pursue a refund. If anyone else has experience with Elle (it seems she has done this to several people, if her ‘copy paste’ message is any indication), or a way to contact her, please let me know.

“You ok baby?” Your question startles Bucky from his thoughts and he looks at you with a soft smile. “Yea. I am. Thank you beautiful.” With your fingers entwined you walk down the street, your arms swinging and your hearts lighter. “Now I’m just thinking…where do we start”? You hum in agreement, lightly skipping in front of him and twirling yourself around.

“Well. We have to call Tony and tell him we’re in. So, we’ll do that first thing on Monday. And he might be a good person to ask on what to do next.” Bucky watches as you continue dancing yourself down the street, lightly jogging to catch up and twirl you around again. “Good idea,” he says before kissing you, his fingers buried in your hair and your hands clinging to his shirt.

“Bucky, we’re really gonna do this aren’t we?” You whisper the question against his lips, eyes still closed as you catch your breath. When he doesn’t answer you open them and the depth of love you see makes you lose your breath once again. “We are. And there’s no one else I want to do this with.” Before you can say more, he kisses you again and you let the sound of the city and the rest of the world fall away, completely wrapped up in him.

Monday starts off well and your call with Tony is full of hope and excitement. He wants to meet with you again to go over how and where to start and he wants Steve to come as well so they can discuss the structural changes that the Bookshop will undergo. The buzz from it all carries you through the rest of the day and your thoughts are ever present on all the ideas you have for the renovation.

‘Hey doll. ❤❤ I was thinking we should meet up with everyone after we talk with Tony and maybe discuss ways to get the word out, you know on social media and all that.’ You smile as you type your reply text. ‘That’s a great idea ❤ Nat is a whiz with this stuff and has done some freelance work for companies so she will be a huge help.’ His own response makes your smile grow. ‘How did we get so lucky. Our friends are the best.’

Later that night the two of you are sitting on the couch, facing each other, criss cross apple sauce, pen and paper in hand. “Ok babe. So far, you’ve had my chocolate chip peanut butter cookies, chocolate pie, cream puffs, and chocolate chip cookies.” Bucky is vigorously shaking his head yes and licking his lips at the thought of all the yumminess. “What about brownies? People love those! And definitely some kind of cake, right? Muffins are a must! And maybe even those cookies you love, the ones with the little feet that we get at that fancy French place in your neighborhood?”

Bucky’s hands are flying this way and that as he continues hurling out different desserts and goodies. At first you try to keep up and write them all down, finally just giving up and throwing the pen at his head. He catches it of course. “Ugh. Why did I know that would happen? you laugh, picking your feet up and poking him with your toe. Ignoring your complaints, he grabs your feet and starts tickling them, expertly pulling you forward and covering your body with his.

“Did you get all that. Hmmm? Huffing as you lay under him you try to get your arms free but have no luck. “I stopped after the cookies with the little feet,” you deadpan, trying your hardest to wiggle out. “Feet? I said cookies with feet?” His bewildered look is the last straw and you burst into giggles, screaming out “macarons, they’re called macarons,” just before he starts tickling your sides.

He finally lets up when your face starts turning red. “Man that is way too fun,” he sighs out happily when he sits up, still keeping you pinned to the couch. “You’re the worst. Now take me for macarons at La Maison!” Grinning down at you he lifts his hands in a promise of more tickles but instead helps you up and kisses you sweetly. “Anything for my best girl. Let’s go.”

When you meet with Tony later in the week, you’re much less nervous and having Steve with you just makes it all the better. The location he picks this time is much more relaxed and you feel like you’re getting to know more about Tony as a person and not just a businessman. “I’m excited for you kids. And you’re lucky you have so many willing and able people on board,” he says, looking to Steve. “I think you should get started as soon as possible. We have about 8 weeks left of summer and it would be nice to have things ready for fall.”

Steve perks up at that. “Buck, if you’re gonna serve coffee and all that you can make pumpkin spice stuff. I’ve seen Peggy literally do dances for anything with pumpkin spice.” Everyone laughs and can’t help but agree. “It’s true. My wife has made me go out in the pouring rain to get her a pumpkin spice latte. She loves that stuff.” Tony’s smile is real whenever he mentions Pepper and it gives you a good feeling, loving that he’s sharing a bit more about his personal life.

The four of you sit and talk for over three hours and it isn’t until you rest your head on Bucky’s shoulder and cover your mouth in a yawn that Tony decides it’s time to go home. Steve walks halfway home with you guys before he makes a turn and heads to his shared apartment with Peggy. “See you guys this weekend and don’t forget about Friday Buck.” Steve gives Bucky a stern look before hugging you tight and saying goodnight.

“What’s happening on Friday?” A mischievous grin creeps over Bucky’s face and you start smiling yourself. “Bucky. You better tell me.” Bucky’s smile is so big and bright you can’t help how infectious it is. “Ok. Listen to me. He told me not to tell anyone because he’s afraid it will ruin the surprise but he also said if I couldn’t take it anymore I could tell you but if you ruin the surprise he’ll kill you. So.”

You’re now jumping up and down in front of his apartment, pulling on his arm and shouting, “oh my god. OH MY GOD. He’s gonna propose, isn’t he?” you whisper yell, nearly bursting. Bucky’s shocked look makes you throw your head back with laughter. “I knew it! Peggy, Nat and I were talking about it the other day. Peg was saying Steve’s been acting so strange and then Nat just threw it out there that he is probably going to ask her to marry him and that was it.”

Bucky starts to look frantic and you quickly take his face in your hands. “No, no, Buck. Don’t worry. She doesn’t know when or how or any of that. She doesn’t have a clue. We were just having fun and talking.” It seems like he wants to say something, so you wait, watching as a sea of emotions swirl around in his eyes. “Ok. That’s good. Because if anything goes wrong, my ass is toast. Even though he can’t touch me but ya know.” Scoffing you brush him off and spin back around to ask, “wait. So, what’s happening Friday?”

“Well we have to go pick up the ring and then I’m going to help him carry out his plan.” You clear your throat and try to hold back your emotion. “I’m so happy. I can’t wait!” Bucky takes your hand and opens the door to his building, letting you through first and securing you to his side once you’re in. “I’m happy for them too,” he whispers into your hair, “it’s going to be amazing.”

By the time Friday comes you’re practically thrumming with excitement and can barely contain yourself every time you talk with Peggy. You’re thankful for modern technology and texting because if you had to talk on the phone you would definitely give something away. You’re supposed to meet Bucky and everyone at the bar tonight to celebrate the engagement, so you and Nat hang out after work to get ready. You all decided to get a little more dolled up than usual tonight considering it was a special occasion and you knew Steve and Peggy would be looking fancy themselves.

“I wonder if she suspects anything,” Nat says as she turns around for you to zip her dress. “I hope not. I mean we did elude to the fact that he might be up to something, but it was all in good fun. Either way, I know she’s going to be so happy. My turn.” You turn around so Nat can zip you up, giving yourself one last look in the mirror.

When you arrive at the bar Sam is outside to greet you, his eyes nearly bugging out of his head when he sees Nat in her dress. You leave the two of them to say hello and head inside. The moment your eyes lock with Bucky’s you can tell he thinks you look incredible. He mouths a “wow” at you before Peter nudges him in the elbow to get his attention. He doesn’t take his eyes off you, instead motioning for you to come closer.

Walking up to the bar you shimmy between some customers, leaning over so Bucky can whisper in your ear. “You look stunning.” With a light blush you pull away and kiss his cheek before searching for Nat and Sam and finding them in your usual spot. “Anyone have an eta on the newly engaged couple?” you ask when you reach them.

Sam slides in close, whispering, “Bucky said they should be here in under 30. He wouldn’t give me any more info.”  Looking at Nat you cover your mouth to quiet your squeal, “ok, thanks Sam!” He walks away to grab your drinks and you watch Bucky behind the bar. “Do you think you’ll marry him.” Nat’s question has your head snapping back and you take a moment to appreciate the weight of it. She just smiles and squeezes your hand.

Before you can take the conversation further, Bucky rushes over with Sam, handing you your drinks and yelling, “they’re just about here.” The four of you get to the front of the bar as quickly as you can and wait for Steve to open the door. You see his blonde hair first and you can already feel the tears building. He opens the door for Peggy and the second her eyes land on the four of you she screams and comes running at you full speed.

Her arms wrap around you and Nat and all three of you jump up and down, crying and hugging and grabbing her hand to see the ring. It’s gorgeous and perfect and you’re so happy. She calls Steve away from the guys and you all hug again, congratulating them and gushing over the ring. Sam and Bucky watch from behind and Sam turns to Bucky whose gaze never once leaves your smiling face. “So. You’re next huh?”

It was the most comfortable part of Jakku’s days: early sunrise, when the cold was beginning to abate but the sun’s rays weren’t yet harsh. Everything was as soft as the desert planet could be, a blinking haze that was there and gone too quickly. It was at this time that Poe finished his work on the speeder. Ergel was awake early, as always, preparing for the upcoming customers with the languorous ease of having done the same thing every day for years. When I watched through the door in the back, flipping stools rightside up off the tabletops, it hit me that soon my days would be fresh. I wouldn’t wake up every morning with the same dread of getting my hands dirty, only to be rewarded with nothing.

The goodbye was quick and awkward. I’d never seen Ergel’s emotions roused beyond a goodhearted chuckle, and he didn’t disappoint with our final encounter. Whatever we felt was kept in a quick hug and admonitions of safety; anything else would have been beyond two Jakku residents. Even if it didn’t seem right, and even if we would have liked it to be different, everything came and went with the wind on the sand. It was all we knew. I hoped, while I watched Poe make his final adjustments on my poor excuse of a vehicle, that something might finally be concrete.

Once the sun made its last leg beyond distant dunes, we left Cratertown. I drove the speeder, nagged by the assumption that Poe was holding himself back from correcting my every move. He rode behind, uncharacteristically silent. He was likely just focused on finding BB-8, always scanning the landscape as we went, but I liked to think that he respected my need for quiet. The goodbye with Ergel was a simple thing, easy to comprehend and accomplish. I was afraid that saying goodbye to Jakku would be a far more difficult process.

I wanted to take the lead and feel myself hovering over the plain, undisturbed sands, with my hand urging the machine along and my decision kicking up dirt. I was doing this for myself, and I would leave that knowledge behind, even if the tracks were temporary.

Poe immediately contacted the Resistance base once our comlink connected with the communications tower. He briefly informed them of his situation, of where he would be, and that he was bringing a recruit along. That sent my pulse rocketing against my skin.

I parked the speeder on the outskirts of Niima, hoping that a scavenger wouldn’t pick it out and take it for themselves, before figuring it shouldn’t matter anyhow. Let the scavenger’s pick it apart; hopefully, it would buy someone a good meal or two. We started forward, Poe with a wrapped cloth—courtesy of Ergel—around his head to keep his face partially cloaked. However, once we were amid the settlement, it was obvious The First Order had already come and gone. Scrap-metal—with the charred remnants of Tie Fighter shots blown across the surfaces—skittered around Niima. There were deep craters in the sand from an aerial onslaught. Unkar’s junkyard, a collection of ships, gears, and weapons he inherited or illegially swideled, was an even bigger wreck than I’d heard it to be. One of his best ships was blown to bits, and another had apparently been stolen, according to bits and pieces of gossip.

“I’m grateful for a great many things,” Poe said, blinking around at the wreckage. “But shit am I happy that that comm tower wasn’t shot down.”

I nodded. “We need to drive the speeder to Unkar’s Concession Stand.”

“Alright. Mind explaining why?”

The Crolute was still behind a barred window, muttering under his breath and screaming over his shoulder every now and again to anyone who would listen.

“First she refuses to sell that droid, like a fool, and then-"

“A droid?” Poe stepped forward, keeping his face within the cloth and a pair of goggles over his eyes. “What kind of droid?”

“The one the fuckin’ First Order would have paid for! That’s what kind!”

“What happened?” I asked. “Where did the droid and your scavenger girl end up?”

“What’s it to you?” Unkar asked, leaning a blobby pink forearm down against the counter. “Why would you care?”

Although the First Order probably thought that Poe and I were dead, along with their defecting stormtrooper, I still stalled. Giving Unkar too much information might bite us in the ass. He was obviously willing to sell anything, if it gave him a shiny credit in return.

“Why we care is none of your concern, pal.” Poe said, folding his arms. “We’re here to buy information; not be scrutinized.”

“Ah, a negotiator,” Unkar grabbed either side of the metal plates lining down his front, stretching to full height. “Who says this speeder is worth what I have to say?”

“You flatter yourself too much,” Poe said lazily, as if he had bartered a thousand times before. “Besides, this speeder has been refitted with a new carburetor, not to mention entirely scanned for product replacement. The engine has been scrubbed, the balance has been perfected, and I can almost guarantee just with a glance that she will run better than anything you have stashed in your junkyard.”

Ungrateful! After everything I’ve done for her!”

We turned from Unkar’s Concession Stand without another word, although we heard the questioning calls that followed. As we walked on, we passed scavenger stations, with a few of the poor souls Unkar ruled over scrubbing away at bits of scraps. Just looking at them had me feeling guilty; why did I deserve a ticket out? Yet again, most of them wouldn’t know how to survive outside of this lawless, unforgiving planet. They had built roots here, regardless of how bitter they were.

“BB-8 and Finn are out there somewhere,” Poe said, once we were out of earshot. The sun beat down mercilessly on us without the bit of shade the stand provided. “Hopefully still out of First Order hands.”

“They’ve made it this far,” I said. “It’s miraculous, to be honest with you.”

Firstly, because I didn’t realize the Jess he had been referring to to be a woman, and secondly because it made me feel all the more an outsider, one just trying to fit in and wondering whether or not her efforts would ever come to fruition. I was already raw on the inside. Leaving Jakku meant embracing the hope of a better life, a more purposeful one, but I’d never kept my faith in hope. Trusting Poe was the small push I needed to jump in, but was it enough?

“You must be (Y/N),” Jess said, releasing Poe and holding out a hand for me to shake. She was a petite woman, with deep-set eyes that were as black as Onyx stone and a round face that gave her the look of someone friendly. I took her hand, forcing a small smile.

“That’s me,” I said.

“You’ll have to tell me what happened to you two,” she said, looking up at me with her hands on her hips. “You both look like shit.”

They both turned to leave but I felt my boots stick to the sand, unwilling to move. Jakku was sucking me in, refusing to let me leave, even though there were no sinking fields in this area. I can’t do this, was the only thought I had, replayed over and over until the sweat was coming from a heat within my body, a fearful, flaming doubt. Jess turned questioningly when I wouldn’t move, and Poe stopped in his tracks. He said something to her, so softly I couldn’t distinguish the words, and when the woman continued toward the transport, Poe backtracked to me. When he got close enough for me to see his eyes—finally visible without those maddening goggles—I looked away.

“What’s wrong?” he asked.

“I can’t do this.”

“Of course you can.”

“No,” I insisted, shaking my head, looking off and back toward Niima. “You don’t understand Poe, I just… I can’t.”

“Okay then help me understand,” I felt his large, calloused hands on my cheeks turning my face toward his. “Tell me why.”

I swallowed, tasting the dirt that coated the insides of my mouth. “I don’t think I can ever be like you, like Jessika. There’s so much history already, so much war and I’ve been nothing but an outsider in it until just a few days ago. Being a survivor is one thing, but a warrior? I’m not like you, Poe.”

Poe shifted his weight, worrying his lower lip again. It went against his usual character, against the emotions he chose to show, but I thought he might be genuinely concerned, maybe even afraid. He wasn’t blinking, just staring at me, whatever wheels that constantly turned in his mind building up steam.

“Who ever said you needed to be like me?” he finally said, offering a small smile, although the worried creases between his eyebrows remained. “It will be a transition, I won’t lie. A huge, life-changing one. Things will be difficult. You’ll be putting your life on the line for something that you haven’t had a stock in until recently; I get it. But I just need you to trust me; I need you to hope.”

I closed my eyes and let out a frustrated sigh. “I don’t know how.”

“You’ll learn,” when I didn’t respond immediately, Poe stepped closer, threading his fingers through my hair along the side of my head and interlocking them behind. “Baby I’m not leaving you here.”

“I’ve done fine on my own.”

“You’ve barely lived,” he said, a bit of an edge to his voice that I hadn’t heard since the interrogation with Ren. “We’ve been through hell together, we’ve survived just off one another, and you think I’m just going to leave you behind? The Resistance is a family because when people go through shit together it creates a bond that doesn’t just go away. You are my family now,” he pressed his forehead against mine, digging the pads of his fingers into the base of my skull. “I can’t leave you. You lose so many fucking people in this business; I can’t lose you too.”

If I dug deep enough, if I let go of the restraints, I knew I felt the same. But it would take a while to get there.

“Do you trust me?” he asked, placing a quick peck on my lips.

I did, underneath it all. There was a small enough part of me that wanted to melt into him, to let go of every reserve and leave it behind. The sun hadn’t burned everything away. Somewhere, I was more than just a piece of Jakku.

“Yes,” I said.

He swept me into his arms and before I could squeak in surprise he kissed me. The hands once interlaced behind my head connected at the small of my back, pushing me into him until my hips met his. My grip automatically shifted from the front of his shirt to the back of his neck, aligning our bodies and allowing me to touch the waves of his hair I adored so much. Poe’s tongue was in my mouth, his lips nearly swallowing mine whole and his teeth colliding with mine in a way that was both shocking and pleasurable at the same time. Every bit of me was fire. For the first time in my life I felt truly needed. Poe kissed me like I was a mirage come to life, drinking me up, sucking my tongue into his mouth and sliding his hands down until he could grip my ass.

Poe hummed into my mouth, taking my bottom lip between his teeth and pulling gently before releasing it. “You have no idea how badly I want to get back to base right now.”

I rubbed my nose against his. “Is this your way of trying to convince me to come with you?”

“Maybe a little?”

“You’re terrible.”

He pulled his head away to look at me, and to ensure I could look at the mischievous grin on his face. “No, what’s terrible are the things I’m going to do to you when we get there.”

I didn’t know whether to be panicked or ridiculously turned on; probably, a mixture of both.

“Dameron!” Jess called from the transport. “Stop sucking off the girl’s face and get on the ship!”

Poe’s grin only widened. “She would never do that; she likes me too much.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Ready?” he asked, gripping my hand.

I looked back, fingers threaded through his, a piece of the future in my hand and a vision of the past in my eyes. The sun’s rays painted quivering waves of heat above the horizon, and the reflections bounced back into the sky. It was strangely beautiful, the violent reds and oranges of a sunset, perhaps the last I would see on Jakku. Poe gripped me tighter, a reminder that he was still there. I was surprised that deep within me I began to feel less turmoil and a little more peace. I had fought so long to stay alive; but the galaxy was bigger than survival, and I wanted to know more than hunger, more than heat, more than just the speck of myself.

And I wanted Poe Dameron.

Within a breath, I squeezed his hand in return and faced him, away from the sun.

“Let’s go home.”

These beautiful 'Witch Runes' are the newest rune design to be added to the shop. I was super excited to get this mold and do something different than the standard Elder Fulthark set. This 14 piece (including blank tile) set features common esoteric symbols and is a bit easier to start with for beginners, especially those more experienced with tarot / oracle cards who are used to working with imagery over learning a new language. As you all know, I love adding special effects to my creations to make them truly unique, and you can see by the photos above that this set features both Thermogenic. pigments and glow in the dark pigments.

Also added these adorable wish bottle pendants, each one filled with crystal chips hand selected just for their future owner wire wrapped with Selenite to create what I've dubbed 'Bottled Rainbows'. I have had so many bottles around the house for herbs and spell jars that I wanted to do something different for my jewelry section. These crystals are spiritually cleansed and positive energy charged before they arrive in your hands.

I know that some of my customers are still awaiting rune sets and I'm sure if you're waiting on an order that you're wondering why I'm using my time to make new things and not your set. This is, unfortunately, part of the game that is selling online. I create many things in advance and wait to list them because newer listings draw more traffic on Etsy. This must be done to stay relevant. Since I am not depending on other sources of income any longer, it is important to maintain my presence because I cannot afford to flounder now. It is still just me until I summon an army of Fae to assist me. I have been asking for everyone's patience at this time while I continue to fill backorders from the end of February when I was recovering from temporary blindness and light sensitivity in my left eye. All affected orders will receive special extras for their patience!

If you have placed an order and are curious when to expect it, please don't hesitate to contact me. I often purchase shipping labels on my phone which triggers an automatic shipping notification through Etsy. This does NOT mean I have shipped your order- I will update you personally when I have. Until I find some way to turn off those notifications when labels are purchased, please only go by my contact with you.

I have been triaging orders according to complexity. If your order is only for one or two small items, I will try and assemble it in time to reach shipping expectations. I have been attempting to notify everyone that their order may take longer than anticipated and have updated the shop policies and announcements to relay this message.

I will NEVER sacrifice quality over quantity. I would rather have a customer complain that it took them a year to receive their order BUT it was everything they had hoped for and more. Out of over 200 sales this past year on Etsy since I shifted my focus from Mercari to building my Etsy presence, I have only had ONE customer complain that their item was not up to standard and it was immediately replaced, free of charges to them, with one that was. I would like to maintain this track record, even if it means taking extra time to do it. :)

The Future

Creating Mystery Boxes has allowed me to explore some other ideas that I hadn't otherwise elaborated on before because I wasn't sure anyone would be interested in them. One of those ideas was creating themed 'satchel blends' of pre packaged herbs and botanicals hand selected for a specific element, purpose, deity etc. Because I have had many customers come to me saying that they are beginners and not sure what is what, what they need for spellcraft, what they should put on their altar. I originally put these together for Mystery Boxes, but now that I see they may help those of you exploring the Craft and spirituality, a larger version of these satchels may be available in the shop soon.

Each Mylar bag contains a unique selection of herbs and botanicals that focuses around a specific purpose / intent, theme, element, etc that may be used all together or a la carte for whatever you choose. Each bag is unique with all selections chosen based on their properties and alignment with the subject. I decided to create these inexpensive 'grab and go' bags as a way to make spell craft, talisman creation, and witchcraft in general less daunting for those who are just starting. They are also great for more experience practicioners as they feature at least 1g of herbs and botanicals you can integrate into your Craft so long as you know what you want.

The above is a sneak peek at what will be the basis for the future 'Air Elemental Rune Set' as I have already created Earth, Fire, and Water. This particular variation was requested as a custom order (hence the addition of stars per her request) but the overall theme will be available in the shop soon to complete my handmade elemental series.

I expect to also add more inexpensive selections like this for general use to make magick more accessible and less intimidating for all, putting my knowledge to work for you to make everyone's life and practice a little easier.

Toronto Goes Back to Lockdown as ICUs Fill With Virus Patients (Bloomberg) Canada’s largest province ordered a lockdown in Toronto and one of its suburbs, a declaration that forces shopping malls, restaurants and other businesses to close their doors to slow a second wave of coronavirus cases. Ontario, home to 14.7 million of the country’s 38 million people, said all non-essential retail stores in Toronto and Peel will have to close, though they can take orders for outdoor pickup and delivery. Restaurants will be allowed to operate takeout and delivery services only. Personal services such as salons will also shut down and indoor gatherings will be largely banned. The measures, which take effect Monday, mean Canada’s financial capital will be operating with restrictions on business similar to the start of the pandemic. Unlike in March, schools are staying open.

Business and World Leaders Move On as Trump Fights to Reverse Election (NYT) Inside the wrought-iron fences that surround the 18-acre White House complex, the 2020 election rages on, with President Trump refusing to concede. But the rest of the world—and President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.—is moving on. The leaders of Western Europe have called Mr. Biden, as has the president of the world’s rising superpower, Xi Jinping of China. Retailers brace as virus bears down on consumers and economy (AP) LaTonya Story is every retailer’s worst fear. With the viral pandemic re-surging through the country and the economy under threat, Story has decided to slash her holiday shopping budget. She’ll spend less than $2,000 this season, down from several thousand dollars in 2019. Worried about entering stores, she’s buying gifts online and going out only for groceries. “I want to be conservative,” said Story, a 47-year-old Atlanta resident. “I’m not a scientist, but the best precaution is to stay in place.” The acceleration of coronavirus cases is causing an existential crisis for America’s retailers and spooking their customers just as the critically important holiday shopping season nears. Scenes of flooding, devastation lie in wake of monstrous Hurricane Iota (Washington Post) For the second time in November, the Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport in Honduras was engulfed by floodwaters because of devastating rains from the remnants of Hurricane Iota. Earlier this month, it was deluged by Hurricane Eta. Both systems made landfall 15 miles apart in the span of two weeks on Nicaragua’s northern coast at Category 4 strength. Iota killed at least 16 people in Nicaragua and a dozen or more in Honduras, according to the Associated Press, just weeks after 130 people died during Eta in Central America. Eta slammed the Nicaraguan coast on Nov. 3 with winds in its eyewall of 140 mph, striking just south of the community of Puerto Cabezas. Ten thousand people sought shelter as the system’s winds lashed the area. On Nov. 15, Hurricane Iota reached Category 5 status off the shore of Central America, making landfall as a Category 4 near Haulover, Nicaragua. South Korea mulls steps as new virus cases rise (AP) South Korea has reported 386 new cases of the coronavirus in a resurgence that could force authorities to reimpose stronger social distancing restrictions after easing them in October to spur a faltering economy. More than 270 of the new cases have come from the Seoul metropolitan area, where health workers have struggled to track transmissions in schools, private tutoring academies and religious facilities. South Korea has so far managed to weather the pandemic without major lockdowns, relying instead on an aggressive test-and-quarantine campaign and mask-wearing. Officials eased distancing measures to the lowest level in October, which allowed high-risk venues such as nightclubs and karaoke bars to reopen and fans to return to professional sports. Mortar shells hit Kabul residential areas; at least 8 dead (AP) About 23 mortar shells slammed into different parts of the Afghan capital on Saturday, killing at least eight people and wounding 31 others, an official said. The shells were fired from two cars, Interior Ministry spokesperson Tariq Arian said. No one took immediate responsibility for the early morning attack that also targeted the posh Wazir Akbar Khan area of Kabul, which houses diplomatic missions. The Taliban issued a quick statement denying any responsibility for the attack. The Islamic State group affiliate also operates in the area and has claimed responsibility for recent assaults in Kabul including two devastating attacks on educational institutions that killed more than 50 people, many of them students.

Ethiopia pushes toward Tigray capital (Reuters) Ethiopia said on Saturday its forces had seized another town in their advance on the capital of northern Tigray region and rebuffed an African Union (AU) push to mediate in the war with rebel forces in the region. More than two weeks into Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s offensive, his government said Tigrayan forces were digging in and using bulldozers to plough up roads around their capital Mekelle, home to about half a million people. Hundreds, possibly thousands, have died and more than 30,000 refugees have fled to Sudan. The conflict has spread beyond Tigray, whose forces have fired rockets at the neighbouring Amhara region and the nation of Eritrea, spurring concern of a wider war.

This year in the Atlantic basin has officially seen more named storms in a single hurricane season than we’ve ever had since people started keeping track. And there’s still about three weeks left to go.

Subtropical storm Theta formed overnight in the central Atlantic and is currently forecast to head east on a track towards the coast of Morocco, roughly. The National Weather Service confirms this is the 29th named storm of 2020, breaking the old record set during the monster hurricane season of 2005 that gave us Katrina, Rita, Wilma and over two dozen others.

Theta marks the eighth named storm since we literally ran out of designated storm names for the season and meteorologists moved to referring to storms by letters of the Greek alphabet, as is convention. In case you’re wondering, there are still 16 letters left to go in Greek.

It has been a season of such unrest in the Gulf of Mexico that some locales, like parts of Louisiana, have had to brace for at least glancing blows from multiple tropical storms just weeks apart.

Such experiences used to happen to communities once in a generation, not once in a pay period.

In a less-noticed indication of how busy this hurricane season has been, Eta is still churning off shore of Cuba, making this the latest in the year that there’s simultaneously been two named storms in the Atlantic since 1887. Oh, and there’s also a disturbance in the eastern Caribbean with a 70 percent chance of organizing into a tropical depression over the next five days, according to the National Hurricane Center.

So what is happening? Is 2020 just a remarkable outlier of awfulness in the Atlantic as it has been for so many of us across our pandemic and recession-stricken planet?

Maybe. It could be possible that 2020 will stand as a year of extreme cyclonic activity for decades to come.

But there’s plenty of reason to believe that another dreaded and overused phrase may be applicable here: “a new normal.”

The simple fact is that are oceans are warmer now than we’ve ever seen them. They’ve absorbed a massive amount of the anthropogenic global warming of recent decades and even if we turned off all our greenhouse gas emissions, they wouldn’t cool off overnight.

While the science doesn’t exactly support a direct causal relationship between ocean warming and the increase in storm numbers, it’s fair to say that warmer oceans are at least favorable to tropical storms and more intense and wetter storms.

On balance, our coastlines are simply more dangerous than they were a generation ago. It’s time to face this fact, accept, adjust and adapt, whatever that means for your situation.

And it might be time to start learning more of the Greek alphabet. Storm Iota could be forming within the next week.

I have to record these thoughts so that when I speak to my counselor, I don’t just rattle on about symptoms instead of the cause.

I’ve been struggling so much with the day-to-day. I have stressors like work, buying a house, thinking about a move... but some of it feels like “bad luck”, where everything is just a bit harder than it should be. I just got double-charged for Sean’s Christmas present, and while the merchants were super-responsive and kind, it was just yet another thing I had to deal with when it “should have been” just a simple online transaction. I ordered a book from Amazon for my father for Christmas, and it came with a slightly crunched jacket, so now I have to decide whether to go through “all the hassle” of returning it, or just give it to him. He wouldn’t care in the least about a little crinkle, it’s just the principle of the thing, that I have to even think about this. The lenders needed the October statement for my bank account, and it turns out my banking period is weird (the 22nd to the 22nd), so I couldn’t just get a statement, and I had to call the bank and ask someone to pull it and sign it and they were kind enough to fax it for me, and then I had to do it again for the first few days of November, and then the clerk was like “We don’t fax things,” and I had to be like “Can you ask Bryan, cus he did it last time?” and finally she did it, but it was like, “We’ll make this exception for you again,” and I was like, “Oh, Bryan didn’t even tell me that was an exception,” so I felt like an asshole even though I had no idea I was asking for “extra”. My Taylor Swift folklore vinyl is finally shipping (I ordered it on July 23), and we’re on the verge of a move, so I wanted to change the Send-To address so I actually receive it, and the customer service rep was like “It’s already shipped, so we can’t change it, you have to contact the shipper now,” which is totally fair, just, oh my GOD, now I have to get USPS to change the address, which looks like it costs $15? All because it took 3.5 months to ship an album? And just... stuff like that. Again and again and again. All these little things buzzing buzzing buzzing so that my todo list literally never decreases and just gets bigger and bigger and bigger as it seems every time I try to check off one thing (e.g. “Buy Sean’s Christmas present”), it multiplies into more (”Ask vendor why payment isn’t working” ”Email vendor about double charge,” “Figure out Paypal account information because they can only refund to Paypal”, "Try PayPal account recovery again in ten minutes because it's inexplicably not working," “Set up Paypal to connect with one of my bank accounts so I don’t have $120 just sitting in a Paypal account”, “Transfer the money to the bank”). Or how “Buy Dad’s Christmas present” has become “Initiate Amazon return”, “Rebuy book”, “Return crinkled book to Amazon dropoff store”. And with the zillion other things I’m thinking about between the lender needing documentation and info and what I need to pack when and where and coordinating people to help move, I have to think about my fucking Taylor Swift vinyl???

And it’s getting to me. I find myself repeating, “Can one thing just work out?” And what’s worse is the fact that it’s getting to me is getting to me. I feel like such a worthless weak person, sobbing on silent on my couch during work meetings because I have to make a phone call or drop off a package somewhere. What the fuck is wrong with me? Sean doesn’t freak out like this about things, and I said that, and hes said, “Maybe your body chemistry just reacts differently to stressors so it’s harder,” to make me feel better, and like... that literally means I’m objectively worse as a human being. I think I’m supposed to gather evidence when I make claims like that, to actually pick apart the negative thought, but guess what - I can’t think of any redeeming qualities I have. I hate myself.

I keep breaking down in front of Sean and it’s EMBARRASSING and I’m EMBARRASSED and HUMILIATED to be seen like this, I hate people seeing me like this. And Sean of all people. It is comforting to talk things over with him, but I also know I’m annoying and gross and talk in circles, because he tries to be supportive and I immediately find a way to undercut it or dismiss what he says, which is insufferable, and I hate myself even more for doing it, and I’m worried it will just get to be too much one day and he won’t want to deal with my shit anymore and leave. But I feel so pent-up and even worse if I try to keep it inside. I feel so alone in this, I don’t want to annoy anyone or embarrass myself. I wish I could just deal with this ALONE like everyone else does, but I can’t because I’m fucking weak.

Even during the worst times in the last couple years, I’ve had this thread of hope that it would pass. Because I’d been through so much and gotten through it before, and even though it really sucks at the time, It Will Pass. But I don’t have that lately. It’s just getting worse and worse and worse, and once Sean and I have a kid, it’s going to get monumentally worse, so there’s no hope here At All, and while I’m excited and want to have a family with Sean during the good times, during these bad times, I start doubting everything, and I don’t want to lose Sean because of it, but I’m so scared right now that I’m gonna be miserable and resentful.

I’m so scared I’m backsliding into what I used to be. I’m so scared when I feel this way and genuinely have no idea what to do.

ETA: I remember my therapist telling me to keep a list of things I like about myself, and I’ve even done so before. I don’t know how convincing I will find it in the heat of the moment, but it’s worth a shot.

Dime A Dozen: Maine/Wash Eta+Iota!AU

((Beware, ye who enter: Canon Typical Violence, Past Child Abuse, Past Trauma, Angsty AF.))

They all dealt with nightmares. Project Freelancer didn’t have enough funding to fix them up when their bodies broke, let alone their minds. So each of them had their own customized little slice of hell to explore when they couldn’t stay awake anymore, and found their ways back to the barracks.

York couldn’t be left alone for long before he started pacing, by the end he was chewing at the ends of his fingers until they were raw. He’d been abandoned as a kid so it hadn’t come as much of a surprise when his nights were filled with seemingly wonderful places, the only catch being they were devoid of all life. Any companionship you could think of was absent. No people, no dogs, hell he’d take robots or even zombies if it meant he could speak to something that animated. Nightmares as they were, that would never happen.

North had frighteningly realistic visions of his sister dying in various ways. He haunted the halls, having to reassure Theta that, no they weren’t real, it’ll be okay. Since he had to talk his AI through it, he was able to recount his nightmares with the most accuracy. It didn’t help that most of them were more extreme results of past injuries.

The Freelancer in question was petrified of having her independence, her free will stolen. Before Eta and Iota came into the mix she often ran into Wash (literally) in the otherwise empty mess hall. The two of them woke up from their own around the same time, North and York having settled back in roughly an hour or two before. So South started venting to him. In her dream she’d been given that AI she wanted above all else, but it stole her body when she looked away, chaining her up in a box. She said it reminded her of Sigma, in the voice at least.

Wyoming required sound, of any sort to sleep. It was the real reason he and Florida had started rooming together, despite the rumor (Lies spread by West and Indiana.) that they both met before Freelancer, in some wild kinky orgy. (They hadn’t even been hired in the same month and came from different colonies.) The way he’d described it, it was like some strange puzzle room, full of brick walls with no sound. No echoes, no footsteps, not even breathing. Just oppressive silence. Without the stereo blasting, he didn’t sleep. When Wyoming didn’t sleep, he took over the kitchen and started cooking with no reason other than an excuse to rattle the bakeware.

Florida, as it turned out (to everyone's surprise) was only a little creepy by default. He explained to Wash when he showed up during one of Reggie’s cooking sprees, that he ramped it up in public to keep people distant. His voice was softer than usual as he elaborated that it wasn’t a good idea to get close to him. He said he was to blame for this trend of his relationship partners (romantic or platonic didn’t matter) getting hurt. With a seriousness he didn’t believe the man capable of, he made it clear he didn’t just mean bruised ego’s. Nothing good happened to the people he cared about.

Wash, ever the unofficial therapist at this point, countered by asking about Wyoming. Florida just tilted his head, long hair not quite hiding the sad way he smiled. As it turned out the man didn’t really care if he got hurt, because he’d be damned before he lost his “Little song bird.”

...Okay they could still be a little odd if they wanted to be.

CT was afraid for people. She kept reminding them hers weren’t just nightmares. No they were very real. Some day, she had snapped at Wash, they’d all be torn to shreds by this damned project, and they’d never be whole again.

To top off, all of their own nightmares, most of the ones with AI had to deal with double the demons. Theta feared just about anything remotely unsettling, Delta has issues when he can’t just logic a problem away and works himself into feedback loops trying to get a solution, Gamma would rage after having dreams of the slightest thought of being stolen from Wyoming, The twins easily whipped into absolute fits at the suggestion of being separated, and Sigma...well the crackling AI had only spoken once to Wash about them. All he said was he was plagued by the thought of not becoming real.

Everyone in the group other than Carolina and Tex had come to Wash at some point, eyes dark and heavy, voices unsteady. Even those with no voice at all.

The whole coin joke had gotten a little (a lotta) bit old at this point, but even what lurked in their dreams went hand in hand.

Maine had been tormented with drowning ever since he was little. His mother, he said, had snapped when he was seven. She had nearly succeeded in holding him under the bath water, but his fingers had snagged into the shower curtain, sending the metal support rod crashing to the tile and alerting his aunt who came to his rescue. If it was any deeper than a tub, he wanted nothing to do with it if it was up to him. Not that anyone ever asked before sending him on dive team missions.

It didn’t bother Wash to sit on the sidelines when the Director gave in to the demands for one shore week a year and dumped them in whatever beach town was closest to hand. He’d already guessed that Maine didn’t like water before they’d been given their AI, but when the full story was laid out before him, his stomach twisted into a sour lump.

So he shared the source of his own night terrors for the first time.

They were a total 180 Maine’s trauma, even in the root cause was similar. The older man’s voice broke before he could launch into it, thick with repressed emotion. Iota relayed the basic path the dreams seemed to take.

They always began with a smothering atmosphere. It could be a building, or a totally open space, but the air was always the same. Like a tiny broom closet in the height of summer. Then came the heat. The all consuming heat. He could feel the heat on his own arms, and when he looked down, Maine swore he saw his skin beginning to distort with blisters. Then he realized they were too dark to be his own.

He looks to Wash. Silence hangs between them for longer than normal. It gives him time to examine the patchy scars on his partner.

“...I told you my mom smoked.” was all he saw fit to say. It was all the explanation Maine needed. The penny had finally dropped. One side was water, the other side was fire.

The heat bloomed across his face, curling lazily along, as though it was pretending not to be either capable or intending to sear his flesh. Still, heat meant fire, and David could smell the acrid fumes from the rug that had caught first. When he looks to his hands, he doesn’t see the burns, but his power armor instead. Instinctively he flexes them, and the walls shimmer. Now, it’s his room on the Mother Of Invention. Maine walks in, chuffing a greeting.

The heat has not eased, nor has the smell. He is not awake.

Dream-Maine still had bandages stretching around his throat. They look filthy, like they’d never been changed. Instead of stitches and blood, the skin looks like charcoal. It’s cracked in places and infected pus oozes from everywhere. These observations are forgotten when an orange light flares into the place Eta is meant to be.

“Hello Agent Washington.” is all Sigma says before the room is consumed in flame.

Iota wakes him as she always does. By waking Eta, who then wakes Maine, who then wakes Wash. It’s a perfectly functional, and not at all round about system.

Maine can feel it before he’s even totally awake himself this time, the fire clawing at his arms. This was a particularly bad one then. Normally he just has the smell of smoke faintly hanging in the air. Reaching out, he gently tugs on a handful of Wash’s dreadlocks. The man jolts back, and Maine is lucky his nose just hurts like hell and isn’t broken.

“M-Maine?” there’s always this raw edge to Wash’s voice when he’s woken up from a fire dream. His hands reach back as he rolls over, thumbs brushing over where Maine had been shot. “Eta?”

The blue AI flickers into sight, curled up next to where Wash’s hand rests. “Yes?” he responds quietly, the small bunk bathed in blue light. Iota also fades in, making it an almost cheery spring green. There was a silent understanding that when either of the two woke like this, they both showed up, to chase away the colours of their nightmares. Green was safety for the pair. Green was grass on solid ground, untouched by fire or water.

“It...it wasn’t mom this time, Maine.” Wash’s fingers are trembling against Maine’s scars. “It was Sigma. He was your AI, not Eta. Instead of y-” his voice breaks. “-...you weren’t shot. You were burnt. It was awful and i-infected...he started the fire.”

“The fire’s gone, Wash. You’re awake, and we’re here.” Iota soothes him, petting his knuckles lightly.

“A-And we’re here.” Eta parrots, like he usually does when he’s unsure of what else to say. He tries to smile even if he knows it won’t be seen through the helmet. The pair can feel it through their bond and that’s what matters.

“Like he’d ever leave Carolina.” Maine rattles.

His mind felt like it was full of cotton. Just the voices. Wait...no.

The lack of voices. Voices that used to be there.

Still, he could make out Eta, Iota, and S-...well everyone he guessed. They begged, He begged Maine to just take Epsilon, take Beta, to escape and remember them all.

“Or-” the one that was the faintest, and yet the clearest of them all, “Do us a favor and just forget.”

Snow is swirling around him, he can feel everything as though it is real. Can see Wash, hear him pleading with the Meta.

He can’t stop. Fire is licking at the back of his mind, to just take the unit, to just remember- -or forget! Shut Up!

He shakes his head to try and clear the voices away. There are so many ghostly words. Candy coloured sim troopers are darting in and out of sight. Then he sees the cliff. He hears the icy water crashing below.

Pain laces in his chest, he hears the metal before he sees the hook being jammed into his wound. It burns with the hollow demands of Sigma, because of all the voices, his is the only one wanting to push through the pain, to be real, to be remembered.

At least in the nightmare, anyway.

Because that’s all it could be. As he’s dragged over the edge, he can see Wash. Hears him cry out his name for the first time in what feels like the history of the nightmares. Not Maine, not Meta, but his real name.

That’s what shatters the feeling of water in his lungs, of the weight of his armor pulling him under, because Wash would never do that. The dream falls apart around him because Wash would never call out his name. The name he hates.

Maine wakes to Wash’s elbow prodding his ribs. Judging by how hard the smaller man is coughing and gasping, he must’ve felt the water too. Wash checks again to be sure they are both awake, AI’s illuminating the darkness, before weakly croaking, “Holy shit, we gotta spend less time around Carolina if that fucking AI of hers won’t stop invading our dreams.” he thinks for a moment before adding.

“It’s almost like he’s setting up this whole other universe in our nightmares.”

However when I tried to send my BCH, the transfer went through but the balance is still 0 on the ledger wallet. I selected ” Main” and scan the QT Code to receive the funds. Did I do something wrong? It has been over 36 hours now.”

Ledger have been rather quiet publicly about the sudden loss of service. The company has not Tweeted any updates and according to The Next Web, the CTO of Ledger, Nicolas Bacca responded to concerned Reddit users with a rather flippant:

“The team is still investigating. I’m not following this closely.”

Ledger’s official website does, however, have an “active incident” report that is hidden away in its wallet status report section. According to the live feed of updates from the page, the fault was identified as being an issue with the “new version of Bitcoin-ABC (Bitcoin Cash node).”

The feed stated at 7AM UTC yesterday that there had been a compatibility problem with the new version and that the Ledger team were working towards a solution. They continued to state that users’ funds were safe and that transactions were still possible. The company recommended using the software wallet Electron Cash to access funds that needed to be used immediately.

There was then no further update until 7:46AM today. At that time, it was initially stated that the fix was underway and full functionality would resume for BCH wallets “in the coming hours”. This was updated four and a half hours later with the following message:

“The resync of the nodes may take more time than expected. We are continuing to monitor the situation and will post an update when we have a more precise ETA.”

There was then more radio silence until around 4:04PM. The next update stated that accessing Bitcoin Cash would remain impossible “until we have found the root cause”.

It now appears that the problem has been properly identified and a fix is underway. According to the company, the blockchain is currently syncing. It should be finished around midnight tonight (UTC). It remains to be seen whether it will be successful.

The company’s quiet public stance is likely a deliberate move to avoid freaking out users who are yet to notice the BCH downtime. Despite some minor security issues facing Ledger products recently, the company were still surprisingly named as the top holiday gift in the entire state of Nevada over Easter. With so many new customers, they’ll surely want to avoid tarnishing their reputation at all costs.
