This is definitely one of those post-ROK alliance bonding things, they decide to have a ‘friendly’ gaming night together (Munakata suggests they set up in Bar Homra and Kusanagi refuses because he knows full well this will not be friendly and he’s not subjecting his bar to this kind of mayhem). Imagine Munakata and Anna have been discussing ways to smooth over tensions between their clans, now that the Slate is gone they both think it would be best if they all lay their differences aside and start to get along more, especially since S4 is as busy as ever and having Homra to assist would be beneficial. Munakata naturally thinks about a game night first but he probably thinks of it a more low tech way, like what if we play mahjong and Candyland and do puzzles. Yata happens to be in the bar and overhears, snorting that only old guys play those kinds of games. Munakata is immediately intrigued and asks what manner of games Yata prefers, Yata is totally taken aback at having the Blue King suddenly all up in his personal space and he sputters out ‘y-you know, like video games…and stuff…’. Munakata’s glasses shine as he makes a note of this.

The next day Homra receives an invitation for a ‘fun and friendly game night,’ where they will all play video games to their heart’s content and engage in heart-pumping rivalry with S4. The Homra guys think it’s weird but also they’re all for it, Bandou is totally ready to finally get to shine. Kusanagi thinks it’s nice to see the boys so hyped, even if he’s not entirely sure that this whole thing is a good idea. Munakata’s chosen some kind of neutral ground, like an old unused government building that Fushimi gets to spend all week re-wiring so that they have the best wi-fi in the city. The S4 boys are more mixed on this idea than Homra, both because the more mature members of the squad are not exactly skilled in gaming (Enomoto is surprisingly pumped though, now it is his time to become the strongest glasses character at last) but also because they all have developed a deep seated level of anxiety whenever Captain mentions the word ‘bonding.’

Munakata does set everything up nicely though, he gets several gaming systems (imagine Bandou and Enomoto both fanboying over all these ancient game systems that Munakata somehow found, like this goes for thousands online where did you find it and Munakata is just smiling and sparkling. Enomoto feels sorry for the requisitions and budgeting departments) and there’s lots of comfy seats and refreshments. Anna’s come along as well and they all expect her to enjoy some calming games, like Benzai and Fujishima have already developed a wordless bond over Animal Crossing and Yata tries to steer her in that direction. Instead both Anna and Munakata end up playing some kind of super violent and bloody zombie apocalypse FPS, both very intent on the screen in wordless camaraderie, and the Homra alphabet boys quietly agree not to tell Kusanagi about what his little girl has been playing. Yata and Fushimi find some old game they played in middle school and Yata challenges Fushimi to a game, soon they’re yelling and trash talking at each other and the other Homra guys are throwing popcorn at Yata telling him to keep it down. Bandou and Enomoto immediately recognize each other as a comrade and eventually they decide to combine forces, together taking down everyone else in some melee-type game. Enomoto is even willing to recognize Bandou as a fellow glasses character despite the sunglasses, like an unexpected bond has now been formed and Munakata is very proud his bonding plan worked.

So I'm replaying Ray's After ending rn, and it got me thinking that what I adore so much about Rika as an antagonist is just how damn scary she can be. I always found those who cause harm with good intentions (at least in their point of view) much scarier than those who hurt you with pure intention on hurting you. I think the best example of it is this CG in particular:

Look at that. Such a loving, gentle expression on her face. Probably kissing his forehead. Because she loves him. Heck, without any context, this CG looks even sweet, if you think about it. And yet, all that is while Saeyoung is forcefully sedated on a powerful concoction of drugs even a trained agent like him can't do anything about (and Saeyoung WAS definitely trained to deal with this sort of thing, hence it's mentioned that this is a 'special' kind of drugs). He looks miserable. Bags under his eyes, his expression pained and troubled, even his hair is paler than usual. All that as a direct result of her actions. But she's utterly blind to it. What's scarier, is that she knowingly shuts off her understanding of what's really happening. She's not oblivious to it at all. She just chooses not to see it that way. Simply because she doesn't want to.

Rika is the type of antagonist that will cup your cheek into her warm hand with the most loving of smiles on her face, all while you are getting elixir poured down your throat. Even whispering to you that you're doing great, that the pain will soon pass, and that she can't wait to see you reach the happiness she knows you deserve. I won't be surprised if she even cried genuine tears of compassion during some ceremonies for her believers. All while being the sole reason behind their suffering.

And that's... God, that's terrifying to me. I love that about her.

What is your go to way to torture a fictional character?

In short? Methods that may take very little effort from Whumper, but are no less brutal for it. Let me elaborate.

Drugging: there are drugs for everything. Truth serums, liquid pain, hallucinations, relentless heat—even the kind that make Whumpee feel good for once can be agonizing. Leave them craving a high or begging for the fire to be doused.

Isolation/Sensory deprivation: prolonged periods of nothing but darkness and silence to keep Whumpee company, until they can’t take either anymore. Until the thought of darkness or silence makes them panic.

Stress positions: tying Whumpee down in ways that put a tremendous strain their body, or simply hanging them upside down by their feet and letting gravity do the work. Either way, eventually the pain will be too much. They’ll do anything for relief.

Starvation/Dehydration: no matter how badly Whumpee may want to fight, they can’t do it forever without food or water, which are now privileges that can be given or taken away at Whumper’s discretion. Bonus: leaving Whumpee out in the sun on a hot day, where sunburn and hot air will make a dry throat unbearable.

All of these methods have a common ground that I absolutely adore in Whump: Whumper doesn’t have to do anything but wait for Whumpee to break. The battle is almost entirely in Whumpee’s own head. They suffer only as long as they can manage to be stubborn.

unpopular opinion maybe but: out of all of the villains in the TOA trilogy, the only one that made me feel genuine fear was angor rot. with nothing to lose and nothing binding him to anyone after losing his soul, he was able to destroy everything because he had nothing to live for. yeah yeah morgana and gunmar had bigger armies and bigger world domination plans, but i would much rather have to fight them than the guy who is (rightfully) insane whose lost everything

thinking about inscryp.tion again and how it was SUCH a cool and fun game mechanically, and then the lore was uhhh bad

the "real world" stuff at least. i really enjoyed the story about 4 sentient AIs constantly at war for who gets to rewrite the code. that was sick as fuck. it honestly would've been much better without the arg and meta stuff i think. no secret company men in black. no hitler for some reason. just a fucked up creepypasta of a game. keep it simple.

I love how when I played TLOU part 1, I started out as big Joel defender whenever he rejected Ellie like, “awh it’s okay, he’s just dealing with some stuff rn,” “awh don’t worry he’ll warm up to you eventually just give him time,” “Awh joel it’s okay, she’s okay, just be a little bit nicer come on.” 🥺

something ive always loved about omori is how its horror doesn't rely on jumpscares. like yeah there are some jumpscares in there, but like. in black space specifically, all of the horror elements are built around suspense. there's uncanny stuff happening all around you, but its all suspense. im thinking back and the amount of actual visual jumpscares in the black space rooms (black space 2 included) is actually really small when you think about it (this doesn't include the fear polaroids since i dont play on console lmao).

a lot of the times, the big deformed monsters youll see in black space don't move an inch. theyre just still images. but the game has a way of building suspense to make you THINK theyre going to move. so you stand there staring at it for a moment. thinking to yourself, 'is this thing going to move' or 'is there going to be a jump here'

you're waiting for something to happen.

I am ill thinking about ghost and soap. They are so atrociously in love with each other and am sick in the head about it. Ghost fucking waited for him and watched over him when he very well could’ve just left and gotten himself to the fucking safe house. Nobody told him to wait on soap, he NEEDED to once he knew soap was alive because that’s his everything. I’m going to literally explode if I think about it any longer…
