Possible HL sequel themes?

with the possible rumour of a hogwarts legacy sequel, i thought i'd join in on the fun of speculating on some possible themes/questlines we might get in mc's sixth year! because for now, speculation is all we have and i am clinging to it

Keeper Resposibilities

starting with the most obvious one, the main character is now a keeper of the repositories, on top of wielding their ancient magic. seeing what this means for them, learning more about using this ability, while carrying the burdensome responsibilities on their shoulders would be something we'd expect to at least be a constant undertone of any sequel games

whether we choose to bring in companions to help us (something professor fig encouraged, but the mc may have felt reluctant towards) is something that may be explored, or another key theme for the overall game

Chamber of Secrets

in the original game script, the gaunt family home was going to be included in the story (we were ROBBED). considering this, on top of the recurrent mentioning of basilisks, and the note we find in salazar slytherin's scriptorium, i don't think it would be illogical to suggest we might get a chamber of secrets questline in the sequel- or, at bare minimum, something to do with the gaunt bloodline/salazar slytherin (we still don't know why isadora's triptych was in the undercroft, nor how salazar slytherin had ancient magic-related runes in his spellbook that sebastian found in the scriptorium)

Triwizard Tournament

i mention this mainly as it's a popular theory. officially, the triwizard tournament was ended in 1792 due to a high death toll, however there were unsuccessful attempts made to bring it back especially considering that we'd be nearing the 100 year anniversary of its outlaw, i could see the ministry/black trying to bring it back. either in mc's sixth year (1891-1892) or seventh year (1892-1893)

so, it's not impossible for us to have a triwizard tournament in the sequel/s- but, if we do get it, then the tournament would have to fail for some reason, to make it compliant with the canon

Enemy Aftermath

removing rookwood and harlow from the ashwinder organisation may have created something of a power vacuum, even if you did the side quests to remove other notable high-ranking members. rookwood had aspirations to make the ashwinders the most prolific underground crime gang in all of europe, no way his gang just occupied the hogwarts highlands the rookwood family is- by the late 1800s- a crime family, we know from rookwood's father, and we might assume the ashwinders organisation is spread across areas of at least the uk- someone is going to gun for top spot in rookwoods absense. or, another underground gang is going to try and replace the ashwinders.

also we can't be ignorant to the fact that ashwinders/poaches recognise the main character for their 'powerful/mysterious/dark' magic, it's entirely possible that has repercussions in and of itself

Continued Companion Questlines

another given, especially for sebastian- since there's a lot of loose ends where his questline ended, and as some of the themes of the 'In the Shadows' storyline were tied to the themes of the game, continuing Seb's story seems only natural, although devs will have to make a canon MC choice on whether we send him to azkaban or not

on top of that, like the aforementioned scrapped 'Gaunt' quest, there's definitely a possibility we'd get more relationship questlines for current and new companions, building on the scrapped companion feature we were supposed to get. (ominis, amit, imelda, everett)

'Scrapped' Game Mechanics

not quite a 'theme' as much as a feature, but provided the feedback Hogwarts Legacy has received (read: common criticisms), it's entirely likely that game mechanics the devs had planned for- 'your choices matter', 'romanceable characters', 'proper companion features' etc., might be implemented.

my understanding is that the main reason these features weren't included ended up being due to time constraints and funding limits (Avalanche is a small studio compared to its competitors). given that a lot of the legwork for HL2 will already be outlined, like the hogwarts map and other mechanics, it wouldn't be outlandish to think that they may have the freedom to add some more elements to the game now. especially as hogwarts legacy exceeded sales predictions, so they can probably invest more into its sequel than they did the first game, in the hopes it will sell equally as well- especially if they add features people are asking for/complaining about not having.

this said, I don't understand the first thing about coding, so I could be wrong, but equally it's a smart business strategy to make if Avalanche Studios want a sequel to succeed- so fingers crossed!

additionally, if you're like me, and are easily startled; i recommend treating it like a party. have a countdown or something. be surrounded by your loved ones. take the actions you personally need to take to make yourself safe.

i have already seen mockery towards any person who feels nervous about this. for the record, it completely, completely valid to have "emergency broadcast sounds" be an anxiety trigger. do not let other people make fun of you for that. emergency sounds are legitimately engineered to make us take action; those of us with high levels of anxiety and/or neurodivergence are already pre-disposed to have a Bad Time. sometimes it is best to acknowledge that the situation will be triggering for some, and to prepare for that; rather than just saying "well that's stupid, it's just a test."

"loud scary sound time" isn't like, my favorite thing, but we can at least try to prevent some additional anxiety by preparing for it. maybe get yourself a cake? noise cancelling headphones? the new hozier album? whatever helps. love u, hope you're okay. we are gonna ride it out together.
