omg please elaborate on your victor frankenstein and creature opinions we were having this discussion in class ab like sympathetic characters in frankenstein etc etc and i would love to hear your thoughts

alright disclaimer that i haven’t actually “read” frankenstein since my senior year? so this isn’t an academic analysis or anything nobody take this too seriously i’m just saying words. but! i do have a lot of thoughts and most of them are that i think victor frankenstein is neat.

i think a lot of readings i see even on that post are along the lines of “victor was a little bitch, he should’ve been there for his son, it was his fault” and i simply don’t vibe with that because i think it misses some key points (and i just don’t really care for the creature as a character—i think it’s way more interesting to read him as a metaphor for the things that victor finds revolting about himself [particularly wrt gayness/transness & mental illness/disability]—but i digress). i think that a) the creature isn’t victor’s son, and b) the creation itself is the tragic turning point in frankenstein, not victor’s rejection.

given that frankenstein is a Romantic novel i think it’s significant that the creature is a perversion of nature (something that shouldn’t exist within the world, something unnatural) created through unnatural means (i.e. not a son, not a life brought into the world through nature, but something given life wrongly). there is no situation in which victor can accept this or in which this can go well even if he does, because this story has already become a tragedy when nature was violated in that way. the creature’s existence is inherently in discord with the natural world, and that’s what makes his story tragic, and that would be true even if victor did accept it. the bell’s already rung! stone’s already rolling! the boundaries of nature & humanity can’t be unpushed!

i also think that victor’s initial reaction of rejection is a deeply sympathetic and human one, because Dear G-d He Fucked Up So Bad and he’s just now seeing that. just the dawning horror of finally stepping back and seeing his creation and thinking what have i done. like, victor doesn’t freak out when he sees the creature because it’s physically ugly, he does it because he realizes the wrong he’s done and the unnatural nature of what he’s wrought (and he realizes that he isn’t g-d and he isn’t prometheus). he knows that he can’t erase what he’s done but he needs to so desperately and he keeps digging himself into this hole of his own creation because that’s what tragedy is! that’s why it’s so good! victor is sympathetic to me because he fucks up and makes the wrong choices and he can’t see out of the narrative he’s trapped inside and i love that. i love him.

oh of course ! i actually only know a handful and they're all picked out of essentially what is one of the only japanese arthurian works (kairo-ko by natsume soseki<3) so i'm going off his word plus i relied some heavy heavy google translating to try to find them buut nonetheless, i quite like
