All goes well when you are ignorant is what my dear best friend would say to me now, as I sit in the very back of the class unfocused on how our teacher is introducing an activity I have no chance of participating in. All I knew was that when Mr. Aizawa walked up to the board and wrote names of people getting offers, I wasn't one of them. Not that I expected to be, considering I wasn't in the sports festival, let alone the school at all back then. 

However, I did notice a small inconsistency in the order of the most offers. I was pretty sure that boom boom had gotten first place in the festival, him being there is what convinced me to transfer, but his name was actually second on the board. 

Todoroki had taken the place of first as far as offers were concerned. Todoroki the nice boy who I used to meet when I snuck away from my fucking prison cell. Call me privileged for complaining about living in a mansion All my life, but I much prefer being here. With common folk. They ground me. 

I peeked up from my phone at the red and white head of hair in front of me, he didn't seem all that fazed. Although maybe it was just the lack of seeing his face that made me believe he couldn't care less about all but one of those offers. Still, his business is his, and my business is the new Ao3 update on my favorite chrollo lucilfer fanfiction. What a babe. 

I decided that the class as of right now would be of no importance to me, considering I will have no offers, and bakugou-the reason I came here- hates me like I'm a piece of gum stuck under his shoe.  Through that conclusion I allowed myself to dissolve into the world of hxh and forget about how boring this world is. 

Could my power beat Killua or go in a fight? I mean, it doesn't enhance my strength like they did trying to get into Killua's house so physically they must be stronger. 

"Y/n! Is there something you would like to share with the class?"

Mr.Aizawas voice seemed almost shot at me as my gaze rose from my phone in my lap to meet him at the front of the room. He looked displeased to say the least. Well good for him, im displeased too, I might not be able to beat a fucking twelve year old in combat. 

"Huh?"

"You were grumbling, what's so important you had to tell us, hm?"

I thought it through for a second- just kidding, I never think anything through. 

"Oh, well I wasn't sure if I could beat Gon in a fight, but I'm not coming to the realization that if Chrollo is my boyfriend, I shouldn't have to fight anyone at all. I can just be a pretty face in the backgrounds and then after he wins for me i'll suck his-"

"Enough, y/n." Mr.Aizawa no longer held a tired looking face, his eyes were wide and an uncomfortable cringed was set on his face. As I peered at the rest of the class many also had shocked eyes, but unlike our teacher, held faint blushes. 

Minus midoriya, his face was completely red and his eyes void of life. I must've killed him, huh. 

"Wait!"

In an attempt to regain some dignity, I tried to correct myself.

"I would....not suck his-?"

"Don't even say it, shitty princess !"

"Woah bakugou, you spoke to me on purpose!?"

"Shut up!"

"Hey, how come you call me princess, you like me or something?"

He growled at that, neither of us paying mind to the fact that everyone in the class was either dead from nosebleeds or extremely uncomfortable and staring at us.  

"Its cuz you act fucking entitled like a princess"

"I'll be your pillow princes-"

"Enough!" A robotic-like hand sliced the air in front of me. The voice sounded firm, almost more teacher-like than our teacher's voice. I followed my gaze up the hand, not failing to notice how as I drew up the guy's arm his muscles only seemed to get bigger and bigger and- iida? 

"Oh class rep-"

"Y/n this vulgar language and border-line harassment needs to cease immediately. I will not tolerante overtly sexual language and acts in this class-"

As he was speaking I noticed something ironic about the situation. If everyone here didn't like sexual jokes or banter, how were they so flustered at comments that objectively should be unknown to them. 

"How did you know what I meant, iida?" I rasped in a low sultry voice, allowing my fingers to dance up his arm starting at the wrist in front of my face. 

I heard a few chuckles from, who I would say are the only two people enjoying this situation: kaminari and...stinky mineta. Iida's face grew more red than previously and the arms in front of me began shaking. 

"Mr.Aizawa it seems I've disarmed the robot. Is there a restart button or something?" I question with a serious face using the search as an excuse to wonder my eyes all over his body. Perverted? Yes. Rightfully attracted to this giant hunk of a nerd. Yes ×10. 

"No, there is not." Todoroki, who was in front of me, finally turned around to address me. I guess he was unfazed by my words. Looks like someone here can be cool. Whether he is okay because he is more comfortable with sexual jokes, or because he has yet to pick up on them, its nice that somebody in here can still function. Otherwise, I'd feel like a nuisance. 

"Y/n I'm not really sure how to- let's just say to have detention with your m- midnight. Detention. Yeah." Aizawa publicly convinced himself of my punishment? 

"Okay"

"Now, back to this, even if you didn't get any offers ALL of you will have an internship" 

And so went on the class, kids chose their hero names, not me though. I wasn't even sure I wanted to be a hero at all, this was just a little less boring and sad than the way I lived before. This school had people who laughed in joy, not just to mask the pain. That was the real benefit, not being a hero, or being strong. Likely no one here realized that there were many places where none of this joy was possible. 

Some of the kids in class gave me suggestions for a hero name, but I didn't like them anyway. They lacked personality, and while I have many adjectives to describe my personality, my life, none of them are all that heroic.

See, I'm not the best at this. Even bakugan names had some sense to it...well no. I'd say we're about the same, but still. Ugh.

She came up with no hero names. Fucking entitled brat. Everyone at this lunch table seems to have no problem with the fact that she is here, just happy to have another pair of tits to stare at like perverts. Their gross. I bet she doesn't even want to be a hero, she sure as hell doesn't act like it. We don't even know what her whole quirk is. Ive seen her do that plant shit a couple times, fucking with flowers or whatever. Still, there's more to it. Something we don't know, at least. Cuz in the middle of class she gets up and whispers to Aizawa and he just lets her go. Where the fuck does she go? 

Interrupts class, got into the school because her moms a teacher, won't use her quirk. What a nuisance, I can't believe she is not expelled yet. Plus those bullshit sex jokes are so shitty. She is obviously faking something when she does them. Not like midnight, who always at least seems like she means that gross shit. 

"Hey, who did you guys choose for your internship? I haven't chosen yet."

"The number three hero guy," I spoke, knowing I'm the only person here who already chose. 

"Really? Best jeanist! That's so cool, but are you sure that for you bakugou?" Shitty hair raised a shitty brow at me. 

"What the hell is that supposed to mean!?"

"Just that he seems pretty...uptight..for you?" Dunceface added, but he spoke like it was a question. Of course he is the hero for me, he is the highest ranting hero on my list. If I wanna be number one, I gotta train with the best. 

If I go to his agency I'm sure there will be a lot more action, since he is so high ranking. Then i'll get some real experience kicking villain ass, well, other than the USJ. 

"Of course he is the right option!"

"Woahhh~"

Shit. It's her voice. I honestly should applaud her for using it less often around me but, how can one small girl be so goddamn annoying. I don't even know what she has to say and I already wish she would just put a sock in it. How can someone so entitled like her, probably never had to lift a finger, walk  over here and talk like she has something to say. 

"You're working with the best jeanist! So cool, one time he saved me from a group of rapist guys, it was awesome with all these strings everywhere and I could only see half of his face. Oh and he had goofy hair too!"

Oh. I didn't really know how to respond to the girl who looked so excited about almost being violated. Another thing wrong with her? I looked back at the other people at the table to see if they knew how to respond to something like that. 

Dunceface was frozen, tape arms were frozen, shitty hair was frozen, and alíen eyes were looking like a lost puppy and trying not to cry. 

It didnt seem like the shutty princess was exactly understanding how what she just yelled was making things weird. She just stood there expectantly. She kinda looked like she thought being raped was something that must happen to everyone. Did she think that? Wouldn't put it past her weird ass. 

"Uhm...anyways, i'm sure you'll do awesome, he likes to put boys in tight jeans. Wish I could intern too, I'd love to see that boom boom~" she winked. 

A perverted joke...and then she had the audacity to wink at me. 

"You wish you could see me in tight jeans, shitty extra!"

"I know...thats what a I just said." She dead panned, blinking a couple times at me. 

"Tch, screw you!"

"I would-" 

"Can it, i don't wanna hear your shitty voice anymore"

The girl stopped herself after my words, pushing all her hair behind her head, except for the two blond stands in the front. 

(You don't have to acknowledge these if you don't want, but I made it so that they change color depending on what element your using and I thought it was hot*if you have short hair, then you just got a lil nishinoya type thing 🥰)

Lifted her obnoxious hands that moved around while she talked and made a zipper-like motion over her lips. Then she just stood there looking at me. I really wanted to just let her stand there and go back to eating. Ignore her completely and let her hope fizzle out and die or something like that. 

Yet here I am, still looking at her. Silently. Wishing she made a stupid joke so that I could stop flickering between those images I'd seen of her dancing. How even though ballet is a princess fucking dance, the pictures felt nice. Like if I was watching it live I would probably be unable to criticize it. That pissed me off, because I want to hate everything about her, but I can't hate those photos. Where she looks like she is flying, without any need for a quirk.

I see her in that weird gown, and now, in the UA uniform. I see her looking respectable, formal, and serious. Then I see her stupid little smirk as she takes pride in being able to shut up for more than a minute. 

"Why are you still standing there?"

Instead of answering, she took her hand up again, made a pinch with her fingers and unzipped her mouth. 

"I was enjoying the look in your eyes."she smiled. 

The look in my eyes? Could she tell I was seeing two different people? What the hell does that even mean? Even said it without that shitty flirt voice. Like she meant it. 

"You tryna make fun of me?"I stood up from the table to get in her face.

"Not right now, maybe later, I gotta do something." She smiled sincerely at me, for a second as she walked away, I forgot about how this conversation started. What a wierd fucking girl. I'll never respect her as a hero. Tch. (Yes, its canon he tchs even in his thoughts) 

3rd person POV 

Y/n briskly walked out of the cafeteria with a new goal in mind. She would come to remember how maybe being oblivious was a benefit in some ways, but for now, she had a clear plan .

"Mr.Aizawa, let me do an internship."

"You weren't in the festival, I can't just hand you to a hero who has no idea what you can do, y/n."

"Well, you know what I can do, right?"

"No. I'm not doing internships. Stop asking."

"That's not what I meant! You can just tell them, or I could, it's not that hard to explain. Just say i'm all- powerful or some play on words like 'she's got all the right elements' hehe, see how i mimicked your voice there?" Y/n grinned like a child. She was proud of herself. 

"No. Still not happening."

"I wanna be an intern too, you raggedy ann looking ass hoe" 

"Y/n, it doesn't make sense, insulting me to get what you want?"

"Maybe it doesn't, but I bet you feel real insecure about your hair right now."

"You already have detention, what more do you want!"

"An internship, I wanna do one with kamui Woods, I have a good reason, too. As far as my quirk control, i'm the weakest with earth, the aspect that allows me to grow and manipulate plants and stuff. That's why I've only been using that part of it all month. Im trying to get her up to speed so I can start using all four at once. He is like a tres guy, right? He manipulates earth all day long. He could teach me a lot, and that aspect of my quirk would suit his well. Please!?!?!?"

If the girl had just asked again in a normal way, his answer would have been the same. However Aizawa was taken aback to hear how much thought she put into this. From the stories of the teachers lounge, he came to understand her big life goal, was to rely fully on a rich man or woman, and do nothing at all forever. Just to try and forget about the terrible life she was destined to have because of that quirk.

This side of her was something he could not even her mother had seen, and it prompted him to speak those words she wanted to hear so badly.

"Fine."

The fourth part to my response to @gumnut-logic​‘s SensorySunday: See challenge! Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

Big thanks to Nutty for helping me get into Virgil’s head for this.  He’s not my usual pov and was somewhat unco-operative... then again, I wouldn’t be co-operating, either, oops.

Mother Nature is a thing of beauty.  The cyclone lashed Tracy Island, swirling clouds of grey and white circling overhead like a particularly vindictive flock of vultures while lightning flashed.  It meant International Rescue was grounded; no craft could possibly take off in such weather, not even a Thunderbird, and the waves crashed far too high for Thunderbird Four to be safe, either.

Virgil didn’t know where Gordon was hiding as iridescent rain drops easily the size of his thumbnail pelted the island, causing ripples in the swimming pool in ever-increasing concentric circles, constantly interrupted by new additions to the party until the surface was one writhing mass of waves.  The prankster loved getting wet, but he also knew better than to go out in a storm like that.

For his part, Virgil didn’t particularly care as long as he wasn’t bothering him.  He’d turned his easel around, so that the vista of the roiling, furious storm was directly in his eyeline, and had immersed himself in paints as he tried to capture the raw energy of the storm on the canvas.  Tracy Island was no stranger to cyclones, but they still weren’t everyday occurrences.  With the blessed promise of no interruptions from rescues (the world would have to manage without International Rescue for a few hours, until the storm had passed), Virgil intended on doing it justice.

And then the call came.

“Virgil!”  John didn’t bother with niceties, or any sort of greeting, and considering even an emergency started with International Rescue, we have a situation, that was somewhat concerning.

More concerning was the fact that even though John was only a holographic figure in the middle of the den, Virgil could clearly see tear tracks staining his face.  For the brother who was undeniably champion of the poker face, that was more than a little concerning.  In fact, it was downright terrifying.

John hadn’t even looked like that when Mom died, or when the Zero-X took Dad from them.

“What happened?”  The words tumbled from his mouth unbidden, the sight of his unshakable older brother shaken destroying the usual brain to mouth filter as he ran through scenarios in his head, immediately zeroing in on his absent brothers with a curse and a prayer.

John opened his mouth but no words came out, just a sob.

“Scott and Alan?”  They wouldn’t have been stupid enough to try and land in that cyclone, no matter how confident Alan was in his skills.  If the mission was over, they’d have docked with Thunderbird Five to wait out the storm.  But something was wrong.  Something was very wrong and there was a vice clutching at his heart as he waited for John to confirm a nightmare.

John nodded, swiping at his face with a sleeve.  One of his gloves had blood on it, a crimson stain against the blue that didn’t belong there. Not on John’s uniform.  Of all of them, John was the one that didn’t deal with injuries, wasn’t out on the front line.

“How bad?” he asked when words clearly failed John – another warning sign, not that Virgil needed it, the vice closing tighter and tighter the longer the heavy silence went on. It was getting difficult to breathe, to draw air in, and Virgil knew he had to do something, anything, to make sure all three currently in space brothers were going to be okay, because clearly they weren’t right now.  He had to.  “Lower the space elevator; I’m coming up.”

“NO!” John shouted, finding his voice at last and looking downright terrified at the idea.  “The space elevator isn’t safe in this weather.”

“I don’t care,” Virgil retorted, paints and painting long forgotten as he bolted for the hangar. “You need me – they need me. I’m not sitting around here waiting.”

“No,” John snapped, scrubbing the tears away from his face furiously and leaving his turquoise eyes rimmed with a red that did nothing to compliment the colour.  “I’m not having another brother in danger. EOS has all the craft on Tracy Island locked down and she’s going to keep it that way.”

He was hunched over, a flash of yellow visible behind him.  His exosuit, Virgil realised.  He wasn’t floating.

“John, where are you?” he demanded, still not stopping his sprint to the hangars.  EOS could be overridden – not easy, but possible, although he might need Brains.

“Thunderbird Three,” came the answer.  “As soon as it’s clear, I’m bringing her back to Tracy Island.  I need you to get the medical bay ready.”

“The space elevator-”

“Is not bringing you up, Virgil!”  John wasn’t one for barking orders, despite being second oldest, but the little brother in Virgil sat up and paid attention to the sheer fear in his big brother’s voice.  “Dammit, I’ve already had to bring one brother back from the damn dead, do not ask me to do it again.”

Something cut through Virgil’s panic, the visceral terror that something terribly bad had happened to one – or two – of his brothers.  The begging, maybe.  The tears that kept spilling faster than a bloodstained glove could wipe them away. Or the commanding tone of an older brother who expected to be obeyed.

He hated it, felt like the storm outside – no longer a marvel of nature, but a cruel, cruel mistress determined to render him useless – but he tore himself away from the hangar and dragged himself to the medical bay to get ready for Thunderbird Three’s arrival the moment John could get them home.

“What am I dealing with?” he asked, voice clipped with the panic he couldn’t fully compartmentalise to be dealt with later.  John’s response was anything but encouraging – both without oxygen, Scott a probable head injury, Alan with a definite one.  Broken ribs from CPR that had lasted too long.  Thunderbird Three’s life support equipment being utilised to its fullest to keep the eldest and youngest Tracy brothers breathing.

With each item on the list, Virgil’s panic rose higher and higher.  He knew what Thunderbird Three had on board.  Like Thunderbird Two, she was equipped at ambulance level, designed to keep a patient alive as long as feasibly possible while they got them to a hospital or similar.  They weren’t designed to function as a hospital themselves (and even if they were, Virgil was the only one with the training to use them to that level), and there was only so long they could keep their precious cargo alive.

Virgil tore through the medical bay, setting up life support, double-checking beds, preparing stretchers for transportation, and prayed that his brothers would still be alive to need it by the time they got home.  John had saved their lives so far, but unless the cyclone caved and let them home, they were doing to die anyway.

I AM MR FITNESS

26/10 Big failure day! I shouldnt have had that caffinated drink yesterday at the big shopping thing cos WOW i was exhausted after so much Accomplishment and then tje caffeine made my sleeping pattern all bad. I woke up late today and it was only 2:30 so i could have theoretically made it to the doctor appointment at 3 but i just got so anxious cos it was such a rush. So i just flaked out on going and i didnt even call them to cancel and im so damn dissappointed in myself aa... This is the first anxiety failure ive had since i left park road...

And then i wasted so much time by waking up late so i felt like it was already too late and i wasmt gonna be able to clean up the kitchen before monday even tho its three days away and i know im being stupid. Just trying to fall into a spiral of failure again!

So umm yeah i only managed to clean 50% of the floor before the sun went down and cos the lightbulb's broken i cant really see enough to clean at night and AAA also i didnt go out today to pay the heating bill cos i felt like id be ashamed walking past the doctors office and knowing i failed.

I just feel like a big pile o fails...

So umm yeah at least i tried to stop procrastinating finishing that google doc about one of my videogame ideas. That's finished now and i shared it with my friends but now i just feel even more on edge waiting for anyone to reply...

Man what a shitty day! Im gonna go wear one of the cute shirts i bought yesterday to try and cheer up. And also cos its freezing cold and i have no heating lol...

Maybe i should try and go on a late night walk just to make this whole day not be a total failure? Aaaa...

I DID EXACTLY THAT

holy fuckin shit i walked 5 kilometres at midnight to find the fuckIN ONLY SHOP STILL OPEN 24 HOURS TO PAY HEATING BILLS

I got a taxi back tho cos i was not only Absolutely Died but also my phone was almost out of battery and i knew i cpuldnt retrace my steps without google maps

I feel weirdly energized and accomplished?? Even though it wasnt anything on my to-do list and it was just a pointless challenge i set myself for literally no reason?? I guess making up a new accomplishment after failing the one i was acrually supposed to do is sort of a way to fight off the self hate. Either that or just its harder to be anxious when you're Exhausted

Anyway i had a nice hot chocolate at The Only 24 Hour Heating Bills Store That Is 5 Kilometres Away, and the taxi driver who helped me get back home was real nice and sympathetic. TOTALLY frustrating to see how quick it is to get back home by car tho! Like under ten minutes and a super cheap taxi ride! He could just go straight there, not spend two hours navigating insane alleyways through people's gardens and mysterious bridges over the river styx. Seriously why is st mellons such a fuckin maze if you wanna get anywhere by foot? Oh well, at least it was mildly more interesting that way. And i can feel accomplished for getting past that Death Bridge despite my fear of even ordinary bridges. I think i just reached the point wher ei was like "fuck im already halfway there, i cant turn back even if it means runnibg over a bridge completely blind and not knowing whats a shadow and what's a hole in the boards". Fuckin hell mate, do some maintenance on that thibg! Or at least install a streetlamp! It wasnt even on the map so wtf did i actually enter a pocket dimension? I also saw the exact same make and model of TV i just threw out, 4 kilimetres away from my house. Like its a friggin 2003 era old crt monitor so what's the friggin odds? Was it the styx of electronics..? Was it ROTOM'S BRIDGE..??

           “…You look very young for your age.” Seeing the bouncer’s eyes going over you, you felt your lips pull tight as your fingers tapped against your side. You knew you looked young, this wasn’t the first time someone had made that comment to you, but you hoped the bouncer wouldn’t give you any trouble as you were already rather frustrated.

           Finding where the bar address was wasn’t hard to do, it was actually located at a major intersection of 2 large streets so all you had to do was follow one street until the numbers led up to the bar’s address. What was hard to do, however, was find the entrance to the bar. You thought that it was possible you had read the numbers wrong, but as you walked down the street more, the new numbers were higher than the bar’s address. Confused, you returned to the corner and looked over the store fronts that were before you.

          There was a thrift shop, one that had an obnoxious amount of papers lining its windows, with each one having an item on sale that was inside. You thought it was a bit odd they had so many posted items on their window, but if people were just window shopping, that was probably the best way to show them what they could buy inside. Some of the more interesting items that were posted were a homemade hamster cage/bin combo, a unicycle that was missing its wheel, and a piano that was missing all the sharp keys.

           Then there was a salon, one that had an insane amount of lights lining the window. It was almost blinding to look at it, and as you looked to the center of the window, you saw the name of the salon strung together on a set of neon lights next to a neon lighted ‘open’ sign. Next to the door of the salon was a sign that listed the stores hours, and you noted how odd they were; the salon was only open Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, from 6 in the morning to 6 at night.

           Next to the salon was what appeared to be a vacant store front, one that looked like it hadn’t been used in years. The windows were completely boarded up, and there was grass growing between the building and concrete, and as you looked over the door and mail box, you could see a thick layer of dust covering the top of the mail box and the decorative pieces of the sides as well.

          As you were looking at the empty store front’s door, you felt your face furrow in frustration at the distinct lack of entrance to a bar. You had left Devil May Cry and ran straight here, literally ran which, by the feeling of pain in your legs was definitely a mistake, hoping to find your way inside the shop as fast as possible. Yet you stood at the corner of the street staring at the store fronts for a good 20 minutes, no entrance to a bar to be seen at the address or at any of the address nearby. It was only as you relooked from the empty store to the salon again that you noticed a narrow alleyway between, one that was smaller than a typical alley.

           Walking your way across the street and over to the store fronts, you looked down the passageway a bit, trying to keep yourself from looking too suspicious as you did so and failing miserably. Down the alley was what appeared to be a wall covered in vines, one that was hard to see because of the lack of light that was able to get into the corridor from above. Looking around the area behind you, you carefully turned to the side and began to slide your way down the alleyway, putting your hand in front of you on the wall as you made your way down.

           The alleyway went on for a little while, and as your hand gently met with the vines, you carefully tried to tap the wall behind the vines. Finding no wall present and instead having your hand brushing the vines to the side, you pulled your hand back slowly and gulped. Carefully pushing your hand through the hanging plant, you felt only open space past the vines, and after taking a deep breath, you slowly slid your way into the vines, carefully stepping your way through. As you emerged past the vines, you found yourself in another alleyway, one that was larger and more open than the one you were just in. Taking in the area around you, you noticed the completely concrete area around you, illuminated by the sky above and one light that was located down the way from where you stood. You quickly caught the smell of a cigarette, and as your head turned about to find the source, you eyes caught sight of a person sitting about 20 feet down from you who was looking at you.

            Freezing in place, you stared at the person for a second, your fingers tapping on your side as they stared back at you. The person’s hand came up, carefully pulling the cigarette from their lips as they let out all the smoke they had inhaled.

           “What d’ya want, kid?” They asked. Stopping your fingers, you opened your mouth for a second, trying to find words to say.

           “I, uh…Was looking for a…drink?” you finally said, your voice sounding more unsure and unconfident than you wanted it too.

           “…ID?” they said, their face unchanging as they kept looking at you. Feeling yourself untense a bit, you opened your bag and shuffled through the pockets in search of your ID. Grabbing it, you pulled your hand from you bag and made your way over to the person, and hesitantly handed it to them.

          The person took your ID and looked over it slowly, carefully taking another drag from their cigarette as they did so. Looking from your ID to you and then back again, you could see that they were unimpressed and as you waited, you tried not to make a face at them as they released the smoke from their lungs onto your ID.

           “…A’ight,” they said after about a minute. Handing your ID back to you, they pointed toward the door near them and jerked their head at it. “It’s pretty early, but I’m sure Wren will still serve ya.” Taking your ID from the person, you thanked them as you chuckled nervously a bit. Placing your ID back into your bag’s pocket, you started to take a few steps toward the door before you heard the person speak again. “Any reason you’re drinking this early? Have a bad breakup?” Feeling your face crinkle a bit at the person’s words, you hesitantly nodded as you glanced to the side to see them.

           “…That obvious, huh?” you lied, unsure of what about you gave this person the impression you had just had a breakup. You knew that you wouldn’t be able to explain the true reason you were here, so you were glad that this person allowed you to have a believable reason to be searching out a bar so early in the day.

           “Makes sense,” The person said, their hand slowly coming down and snuffing their cigarette out on the side of the building. Watching them stand up, you waited, your hand gently tapping at your side again. The person stepped over toward the door, and as they reached and opened it, they coughed loudly a few times.

          “Wren! You ready to make a breakup drink?” the person shouted into the building. Raising your eyebrow a bit, you waited behind the person.

          “This early?” came a soft voice from inside. The person at the door slowly stepped aside, their hand motioning for you to head into the door. You thanked them and made your way into the door.

          The inside was nothing like the concrete outside, and as you looked around the room, you wondered if you had entered a portal of some sort to a new world. The room was completely lit up with sting lights, all hanging from the ceiling, and at the center of the room was an extravagant chandelier from which all the hanging lights originated from. Some of the hanging lights went down the wall on the far end of the room and made their way into the actual bar.

           The bar was lit up with lights that were alternating between red and orange behind the drinks it had lining the wall, and the amount of bottles that were presented on the shelves was impressive, easily surpassing 300 different types of liquor. The counter of the bar was high and a dark wood finish, with 6 metal bar stools that sat in front of it. The countertop of the bar continued over the edge of the counter and was carved into flowers along the side and hanging off of the pistils of the carved flowers were a few more lights that changed from green to yellow slower than the wall lights.  

           There were tables lining the sides of the room, and they were alternating tall and short but long one after another, with each short table having 4 chairs at them but the tall only having 2. In the center of the room was a billiards table, one with red felt instead the typical green, and in the corner near the bar you could see 2 different arcade machines, both of which were currently turned off. You recognized the games that the arcade machines decorative sides had on the side, and you smiled a little at the good choice of games.

           Stepping more into the room, you looked down at the tile below, quite impressed with how fancy it looked and how not disgusting it seemed to feel, something that was quite a contrast to literally any other bar you had been in before. You were so used to floors of bars being sticky, or at the very least Turning your eyes to the walls, you began to go over the many decorations that adorned in. There were hundreds of small polaroid pictures on it, all of them between the other decorations of clean looking car parts, sports equipment, and vinyl records.

          As you made your way to the bar, you noticed a person behind it, and as they were seemingly fighting with one of the TVs that was mounted on the wall, you slowly sat your way down onto one of the stools. Waiting for the person, you watched as they kept trying to turn the TV on, alternating between using the remote, messing with the receiver, and reaching behind it to mess with something on the back of the box. They fought with the oversized TV for a few minutes before they sighed and set down the remote before turning to you and greeting you with a grin.

          “You the one that needs the breakup drink?” the woman asked. Forgetting yourself for a second, you quickly put your bag onto a stool next to you and nodded as you gently tapped your fingers on the bar top.

           “Y-Yeah!”

          “Alright, write out your name here,” the lady said as she lifted a paper and pen onto the counter and slid them toward you.

           “My name?” you asked, slowly taking the pen and paper, unsure of the relevance of your name for a shot.

          “Yeah. Breakup drinks are shots made from liquors that spell your name, and then your choice of chaser,” she explained, a small smile on her face as she crossed her arms. Making a small noise of understanding, you hesitated for a second before writing your preferred name on the paper. Deciding that you shouldn’t write your full name out, you put the pen on the paper before you slowly slid the paper back to the bartender, who gently lifted up the pen and paper to read. “Alright, so I’ll need��” she muttered as she thought, slowly turning around and grabbing a cocktail shaker.

           You watched the bartender go over the wall of liquors, slowly grabbing bottles and setting down on the counter nearby before she scooped some ice into the shaker. One bottle of liquor that she pulled down was familiar to you, as you recognized it as a drink Dante had given you in the past, but the remainder of the bottles were only faintly familiar to you, ones you probably only saw in passing at the store in the past. The woman poured a little of one drink into the measurement end of their shaker’s lid before pouring it into the larger shaker base, and she repeated this for each liquor bottle whose named started with a letter in your name.

          “I’m Wren, by the way. Nice to meet you,” the lady said suddenly as she closed the top of the shaker into the base and began to shake the mix drink together. “How’d you find out about here? You’re not part of our…usual clientele,” Hearing the bartender named Wren’s voice trail off a bit, you could tell that she was a bit wary of you, a fact that made obvious sense to you as it was almost impossible to find this place on accident, except maybe if you were someone who were trying to explore to boarded up thrift.

           “Oh, my boss told me about here,” you admitted as you watched Wren shake the cocktail mixer, condensation quickly appearing on the outside of the metal container.

           “Your boss?”

          “Yeah, he’s like so tall,” you described, lifting your hand up to about where your boss stood in height before you continued, “and he’s older, has a lot of sunspots on his face, his nose kind of looks like it’s been broken a few times and—”

           “Oh, Ansley? Who works at the library?” Wren asked as she set down the shaker, carefully twisting and then pulling out the top of the shaker as she slid a shot glass on the counter in front of you. Thinking for a second, you realized that you hadn’t ever learned of your boss’s name. You weren’t even sure he had been called anything other than boss the entire time you had known him so, hell, you weren’t even sure he had a name until right now, but you nodded regardless.

           “Yeah, Ansley,” you confirmed. Wren carefully poured you a shot, lifting the shaker slowly as she topped off the glass where she brought it down for a moment to completely fill the glass with style, and after she set down the shaker next to the glass, she slowly pulled out an old-fashioned whiskey glass.

          “What do you want as a chaser? Even if you don’t normally need a chaser, I’m going to recommend one for this drink,” Wren chuckled. You asked what chasers were available, and she started to list out a few to you. Choosing just a simple soda, Wren brought up the soda gun and filled the new glass to the brim with your choice of soda before she slid the glass over where it stopped just in front of you.

          “Thank you. I normally need a chaser after shots cause I’m just not that great with taking shots,” you admitted, slowly grabbing the shot glass with your dominant hand and the chaser with your other. You brought the shot glass up, smelling it for a second before you gulped and took the shoot in.

           This shot wasn’t even nearly close to as bad as the one that Dante had given to you almost half a year ago, which had a taste you knew you could never forget, and as you set the glass down and brought the chaser up to sip on, you almost thought that the shot you had just taken could be described as pleasant. As you felt the warm of liquor settle down in your stomach, you realized that your nausea was already completely gone but that you still hadn’t eaten anything today, which you knew wasn’t going to bode well should you have more than this drink today.

           “I’m surprised that Ansley told you about here,” Wren said suddenly, her eyes on you as she leaned against the back of the bar. Setting your chaser down, you looked over to her. “I’m assuming that you know then?”

          “Know? Oh, about…” mouthing ‘demons’ to Wren, she nodded, and you continued, “Yeah, I do. And I was curious as to what kind of drinks would be here. My bo…Ansley told me to try something light, so I had a little bit of an idea of how strong drinks were, but I wanted to try them myself.”

           “Oh, well shit, I would’ve given you something light if you had asked!” Wren said, a small chuckle leaving her. You couldn’t help but chuckle a little bit as well, and as you brought the chaser up to sip on again, you glanced over the bar lights. “And I only ask about how you found here cause we almost exclusively serve regulars, very rarely do any wanderers come in here,” Wren explained as she lifted herself up from the bar and walked over to the nearby sink.

           You turned your eyes to her and watched her for a moment as she rinsed out the cocktail shaker. Feeling a bit of anxiety grow inside you, you gently set down your glass before you reached into your bag. You moved your hand around inside for a moment before you pulled out a picture of one of the possible victims. You looked at the picture for a second as you ran your thumb over the glossy paper, trying to remember any details about them from the papers you had read earlier.

           “Speaking…of regulars,” you said quietly, and as Wren’s attention turned from the sink to you, you went on, “Do you recognize this person?” Setting down the picture on the bar top, you watched Wren’s demeanor change as she at the picture, the soft expression on her face changing into one that held no distinguishable emotion on it. As you waited for her to reply, you watched Wren’s face, hoping to see any change of emotion that could appear on it, but as no new expression appeared, Wren only shook her head.

           “I don’t, sorry,” was all she said, her eyes turning back to the sink again. You gulped, knowing that something was up but as you felt the alcohol start to affect you, you were unable to figure out exactly what was off, whether it was Wren’s response or her facial expression. Pulling the picture away from the bar, you slowly placed it in your bag, quietly thanking Wren.

           Looking to your right, unsure of what you should do now, you noticed a door nearby, and as you stared at it, you wondered where it could lead. Thinking about the layout of the bar, you realized that the only place that the door could lead to was the vacant store front. Picking up your chaser again and sipping on it, you wondered if the boarded-up store front was a way to keep people away from the bar. You thought that it was a good idea if the owners and employees didn’t want random people to walk into a demon safe area, but you also wondered if anyone had ever tried to break in to loot the store only to find an extravagant looking bar behind the wooden boards.

          For a few minutes there was no speaking, your mind drifting around into different thoughts as the alcohol finally started to blur your senses, and the only noise in the area was the soft music from the nearby speakers and the sound of water running over dishes as they were washed. You choose to look over the liquors behind the bar again, your eyes going over them but your mind soon turning to run through ideas of what you were going to do next. The sudden sound of a person loudly sitting themselves next to you snapped you out of your mind, and you quickly turned your head to the side to see a new person at the bar.

          “Hey, Wren. Avaa wanted to know if you counted the tills last night,” the man said, his eyes only focused on Wren. You turned your head back to face the bar collection again, but slowly letting your eyes wander over to Wren as the stranger spoke instead. “She said that we were a bit off again.” Reaching and taking a sip of your chaser again, you carefully tapped your free fingers lightly on the edge of the bar.

          “No, I didn’t, Lain,” Wren said, her voice much lower than it was before. Looking over Wren’s face, her expression had changed again, this time to one that showed frustration. Or maybe it was concern, you weren’t entirely sure with your dulled senses. You felt your face crinkle a bit at her expression, and when Wren caught you looking at her, you quickly felt yourself flush and returned your eyes to the liquor bottles as you lifted your glass to sip again.

            You heard a sigh next to you, one that felt like it was drawn out longer than it needed to be, and you struggled to keep yourself from turning to look at the person. The man remained seated next to you, and as you sat in your stool, completely aware of their presence next to you, your felt your heart rate rise a little as a bit of anxiety grew in your being.

           As your fingers continued to tap on the bar top, you couldn’t exactly tell why, but you felt odd as the man sat next to you. You had only taken a quick glance at him, but from that small look you had formed an unpleasant feeling in your body, and coupled with Wren’s face changing as the man remained sitting next to you, the feeling only continued to grow more the longer he remained in the stool next to you.

           As suddenly as when the man sat down, he was getting up, the bar stool he sat in making a loud scrapping noise on the ground that caused you to jump a bit as he stood. You couldn’t stop yourself from turning to look at the man for a quick moment, but as he made his way around the stool and to the area to the right of the bar, the only glimpse of him that you caught was the markings of a tattoo on his arm that rested on the back of the stool as he moved.

          You stopped yourself from turning to watch the man leave the room, but as you heard a door open and then slam shut, you couldn’t stop your heart skipping at beat at the noise and the anxiety in your center from spreading to the rest of you. As the feeling of anxiety spread through you, you could feel your heart beat faster as well, the feeling of it racing causing you to feel a bit of panic on top of the anxiety in you. You gulped, a bit worried about how loud everything seemed to be suddenly with the water of the sink seeming to be running directly next to your ear it seemed, and as you slowly lifted up your glass to sip from as you turned in your chair to face behind the bar again, a sudden hand came and grabbed your arm, causing you to let your drink slip from your grasp as you gasped.

           “You need to go,” you heard Wren say, her voice like an echo as she spoke, and her face so contorted in such strong feeling that you knew immediately what she was feeling: fear. “NOW.”

           You tried to sputter out words to Wren, your voice facing deaf to the bartender as she only repeated herself to you, her hand’s grasp on you tightening slightly. Her hand was shaking, you noticed, a feeling that seemed so minimal for how strongly she seemed to have hold on you. You closed your mouth slowly, and as you nodded and thanked her, you realized that you could no longer hear your own voice, nor any of the music that was previously playing in the background.

           The feeling of panic immediately over took your whole being as Wren released her hold on you, and as you looked over her face once more, you couldn’t help but focus on the tears that seemed to have formed in her eyes, a sight that allowed the flood of anxiety to try to compete with the panic in your body.

          You pushed yourself from the bar, your arms fully extending as you brought your feet to the ground that seemed farther away than you thought, and as you pushed yourself off of the bar and toward the door on the other side of the room, you tried to listen for the sound of the bar stool falling and hitting the ground. Yet you heard no crash nor thud of metal onto tile, the sound of your heart racing and the low noise of ringing being the only things that you could make out in your ears as you ran through the room and past the billiards table.

          Throwing open the door, you struggled to keep your legs moving, each feeling heavier and more stiff with each step you took as you tried to leave. You reached your arms out as you neared the wall next to the narrow alley, hoping to press up against it gently to ground yourself as to alleviate some of the panic you were feeling. Instead, your arms weakly pressed against the wall with your elbows refusing to bend slowly, causing you to smash into the wall, the side of your face cracking into the concrete and now allowing the ringing noise in your ears to increase dramatically.

           You willed your legs to hold you up as your face lay against the cold concrete, your head now pounding from the collision, but as the feeling in your legs finally became too much to over power, your hands and face slowly slid down the wall together when your knees buckled. You collapsed onto the floor, your arms barely able to protect your head from again smashing into the concrete as your entire body gave into gravity pulling you down.

          As you lay on the cold ground for a moment, you tried to kick your legs, hoping to find a way to push off anything that was nearby in an effort to make your way down the narrow alleyway, but quickly you realized that your legs would not cooperate with you as you could no longer even feel them. You braced your hands onto the ground next to you head, and as you spread out your fingers to try to help your efforts, you felt every part of your body shaking in struggle as the feeling of heaviness and stiffness slowly began to crawl up from your legs.

          You could feel yourself release a sound from your mouth, one of struggle as you attempted to lift yourself up before you were unable to also feel your arms, but the ringing in your ears did not allow you to hear anything around you. As your arms slowly gave into the feeling of heft that was overtaking you, your cheek smacked into the ground again, hard enough to jolt your eyes completely open and bring your attention to the glimpse of light that was shining through the vines before you.

          It was as you stared at the light for a moment that you noticed that the edges of your vision were dark, spots of black slowly speckling their way toward the center of your view. Within a moment of seeing your sight slowly vanishing, you again tried to make your legs move, hoping to gain any sort of sensation in them, but again you felt nothing but stiffness and heft, the feeling now overtaking everything on you except your eyes.

           The spots of black in your vision grew from the edges of your sight and began to spot into the light you focused on, overtaking it slowly with the amount of spots increasing with every harsh breath you weren’t even aware you were taking until you could no longer feeling anything but the air leaving your mouth. As the last of your sight was painted black, you tried your hardest to focus on the blurred object that slowly descended in front of you and blocked you from the light behind the vines, your mind momentarily thinking that you had been able to successfully move your arm.

           It was as you felt one last harsh breath leave your lips that you realized that you hadn’t last tried to move your arm but your legs. Your mind knew that you should’ve felt complete panic at the realization that it wasn’t your body that blocked the light before you as it faded, and yet all that was left to feel was the heaviness that had finally taken over your eyes.

IV.

Camila is never late. You can’t get far in life without planning ahead and therefore she always makes a point of arriving at least five minutes early to wherever she needs to be. It’s not her fault that Sofi had decided to throw a temper tantrum this morning and, by the time Camila had managed to calm her down, they only had ten minutes to get to school. She always needs to drop Sofi off first, which is why she’s now running through the hallways, trying to make it to AP Government on time.

She somehow manages to walk inside the classroom as the second bell is ringing, so there are no consequences for her tardiness and she just gives the teacher a quick apology before taking her seat on the row by the window. Pulling out her notebook and her pencil case, she places her phone between her legs to let the girls know she’s alive and is surprised to see she has more texts than she’d expected. Both Normani and Dinah have blown up her Whatsapp notifications.

Camila stares at the screen in disbelief. Of course the girls couldn’t have been kind enough to drop a photo or a snap of whatever they wanted her to see and now she’ll have to wait until class is over to catch up on the latest gossip.

With an annoyed sigh, she grabs a pen and starts copying the notes on the board.

Camila doesn’t notice anything out of the ordinary as she leaves AP Government, sending a quick message to the Clique’s group chat so they’ll meet at her locker. She’s vaguely aware that there are people watching her and pointing and muttering under their breaths, but there are always people doing that and she’s learned not to care about it.

After all, it’s much better to be the one people talk about than to have nothing better to do but talk about someone else.

She saunters up to her locker and opens it to pull out her Psychology textbook. A folded paper falls to her feet and she lowers down to pick it up, keeping it between her index and middle finger as she finishes what she has to do. It isn’t the first time, nor will it be the last, that someone leaves random messages through the slit of her locker. She shuts the door and leans against the wall of lockers, hoping the girls won’t take too long.

Camila isn’t quite prepared for what she sees as she unfolds the paper and her chin drops before she can regain control of her muscles and facial expressions. What she has in her hands is a very poor excuse for a student president campaign poster, limited to a printed out color photograph on A4 photocopy paper with a slogan underneath in what looks like a bland Arial font. She would be appalled at the unprofessionalism of it all if it weren’t for the shocking content.

It’s a photograph of Lauren fucking Jauregui. And sure, the photograph is flattering, but Camila couldn’t care less if Lauren had plastered her face all over school or decided to hand out nudes at the cafeteria. No, what really gets to her is the slogan:

No cliques: for a fair high school experience

Camila sees red in that moment. She’s gritting her teeth so hard, middle-school Camila would be worried those two years wearing braces had been for naught.

She knew Lauren would come for her, but there is a difference between coming for her and attacking her friends. This is personal.

“There you are!”

She snaps her eyes up to face Dinah walking towards her with Normani in tow.

“I see the hottest news has found its way to you,” Normani says, wincing. She places a hand on Camila’s shoulder and softly allows it to travel down to her wrist. Camila feels some of the tension inside her fade at the gesture and tries to give Normani a smile. She fails.

“That bitch,” she breathes out instead. “I’ll fucking kill her.”

“I’m kind of impressed, actually,” Dinah says, prying Camila’s fingers open to grab the poster and check it out. “Girl legit pulled this outta her ass from one day to the other.”

Camila glares at her, not wanting to hear anything even remotely positive about Lauren. “Did you even read the stupid slogan, Dinah? This is not just about me, she’s coming after us!”

“Yeah?” Dinah shrugs. “I’m 100% Team Mila but I can’t say it isn’t exciting to have someone challenging us.”

Normani snickers at that and Camila struggles with her instinct to stomp her foot like a spoiled toddler.

“You have to admit this school isn’t exactly home of the brave material,” Normani prods, hand moving to entwine their fingers. “I don’t think this is a big deal, it’ll be just like in freshman year when Richard Baker tried to run against you for class president. It was more of a formality to pretend there was some sort of race going on when, lol no.”

Camila squeezes Normani’s hand, grateful for her words and for how her presence helps relax her.

“I’m still going to kill her,” Camila announces after a long moment of silence, lips quirking up in a dangerous smirk.

“I can’t wait for that.” Dinah grins triumphantly, putting her hand up for Camila to high-five.

“And I’ll be right there to step over the bitch’s dead body.” Normani’s eyes are glinting, bright with mischief.

On second thought, Camila says to herself, this could turn out to be a lot of fun.

Camila spends most of her Psychology class obsessing over the poster. She can feel the weight of it inside her blazer’s pocket, even though it’s just a piece of paper folded in four.

This is an affront she can’t let slide, and while she wants to confront Lauren about the whole thing, she doesn’t want to come across as angry and hysterical. Lauren doesn’t deserve the satisfaction of feeling like she has affected her in any way.

She tears out a page of her notebook and starts listing possible scenarios so she can both calm herself down and come up with a viable action plan. She scribbles several brilliant lines of monologue and memorizes them right away, feeling quite pleased with herself. She doesn’t know how Lauren will react but she trusts her quick wit to present her with some decent retorts. As long as she keeps her cool, everything should be okay. The idea is to make Lauren lose her cool.

Now she only needs to think of the perfect setting to enact her little speech. A confrontation in the hallways is out of question because she doesn’t need any more attention placed on the two of them together. There’s already plenty of that to go around. Checking her schedule, she realizes she has AP Lit next and smirks.

That’s something she can work with.

Camila enters room A012 three minutes before the bell rings and is satisfied to see Lauren is already there. Unfortunately, so is her table partner, which forces Camila into a less smooth approach.

Standing next to him, she offers a saccharine smile. “Scram.”

The boy looks up at her, eyes open wide, and hurries away, finding another seat. It’s a good thing Mr. Keating doesn’t care about fixed placements - never a time when that hadn’t been convenient.

Camila beams at Lauren and sits next to her without asking for permission, ignoring the incredulous stare Lauren is throwing her way. She removes the poster from her pocket and unfolds it, placing it on the middle of the table. “It has come to my attention that this is a thing that is happening.”

Lauren just raises one eyebrow, not bothering to reply.

“I’m actually glad you’ve decided to run against me” Camila continues, counting a victory point when confusion flashes across Lauren’s features. “It does get a bit tiresome to have the world bow at your feet without question.”

“Oh please,” Lauren huffs, with an eye-roll.

“But, Jauregui, if you’re going to run against me, at least give me the pleasure of a challenge?” Camila tilts her head to the side, smiling lazily and enjoying the turmoil behind Lauren’s eyes. “Here.” She points at the poster, her finger falling between the photograph and the slogan. She thinks it’s very kind of her. She could’ve easily just tapped one of Lauren’s eyes with her fingernail, which is closer to what she would like to do to the girl. “Photocopy paper, seriously? How cheap.”

“I would like to see you bringing a campaign to life overnight, Cabello,” Lauren counters, swatting Camila’s hand away from the poster. “In the last twenty-four hours, I’ve signed up for student body president, studied the students’ council regulations and policies of the past three years, wrote down a draft of the plan for my presidency and created a campaign from scratch. All by myself.”

“Photocopy paper makes the photographs look pixelated and scrunched up, so unpleasant,” Camila carries on, disregarding her in spite of the somewhat impressive list of achievements. “And Arial for the slogan’s font? What is this? The first group project for middle school?”

Lauren is seething at this point and Camila’s chest swells with pride. She’s doing this. She’s the one aggravating Lauren and she’s loving the hell out of it. “I’ll give you kudos for the slogan though. That was… brave. It will get you attention, for sure, which will last you for today and maybe until the end of the week. But it isn’t memorable.

"I mean, if you’re this bad at posters alone, how do you expect to hold up against me when it’s time to present your campaign video in homeroom? Or for the debate before the election?”

Mr. Keating arrives in that moment and Lauren fixes her with a glare that would probably be considered intimidating if Camila were someone else. “Are you done with the lecture? Can you go now?”

“No,” Camila answers, surprising them both. “You smell nice. I think I’ll stay here for today.” She grins, delighted by Lauren’s startled expression and her obvious loss for words as she shifts her attention back to the lesson.

Camila didn’t think it would be possible, but if she enjoyed messing with Lauren’s head over her subpar poster, she’s now overcome with glee, arguing against every single interpretation Lauren has for the poems they’re studying today.

Mr. Keating notices it but doesn’t stop them. The man has strange ways and he seems to value intelligent discussion over appeasing the belligerent tension in the room. Camila appreciates it.

She’s on a winning streak anyway.

When Camila finally makes it home that evening, after spending two hours in the library finishing her History essay, she falls face first on her bed with a groan. Her phone beeps from somewhere in her bag and she shoves her hand inside to try and find it without having to change position. She succeeds after a very frustrating minute and looks at the screen to see Normani had texted her.

Mani [6:33pm] I have a feeling this presidential race is gonna be more interesting than we thought

Camila blinks and then frowns, unsure of what Normani is trying to convey.

Mila [6:34pm] what do you mean?

Normani sends her a link to a tweet and Camila opens it, a feeling of dread coursing through her veins. 

Her first reaction is relief because she was expecting much worse, but then she clicks on the twitter account, realizes it’s been created earlier that day, sees a tweet with a picture of her campaign poster side by side with Lauren’s and a few other incendiary tweets, and she lets out an undignified wailing sound.

Great. This is just what she needed in her life.

Camila doesn’t think too much about Lauren for the next two days. Or rather, she doesn’t allow herself to, forcing her mind to drift somewhere else as soon as the obnoxious girl pops up in her thoughts. She smiles inwardly when she notices that most posters have been replaced with classier versions of the original, taking her suggestions into account. The slogan is still the same but Camila doesn’t believe that will stick for long.

For all her effort to remain collected about the events of the past week, Camila’s also aware that, for the first time in her high school experience, a person that she’d condemned to ostracism had bounced back from it like it had been nothing.

Social media had played a big part in that, what with the stupid @sipthegreentea twitter that keeps people obsessing over the campaign and that rat Zayn Malik interviewing Lauren for the school blog. She thought no one followed that thing, but apparently a six-minute video of Lauren being charming and eloquent, and making sense in a few of her points, had been enough to gather it some attention. Lauren Jauregui had gone from persona non grata, from the absolute bottom of the social hierarchy to somewhere… slightly above that.

Camila would be lying if she said that didn’t unnerve her a little bit.

In all fairness, most of the school is still avoiding Lauren like she has the plague and she knows some of the popular kids have fun throwing insults at her every now and then - which, kind of makes her uncomfortable but she has done nothing to prevent. However, Lauren’s become a champion of sorts for the underdogs and the wallflowers, the kids too weak to make a name for themselves, and so she isn’t alone by any means, as had been Camila’s original intention. And if Lauren isn’t alone, if she’s defied the school’s natural order and survived, Lauren is dangerous.

That’s why Camila is keeping track of what’s going on with Lauren by ensuring some underdogs remain loyal to her. She may be willing to act as if Lauren is beneath her and nothing she does phases her, because that both irritates Lauren and allows her to be perceived as the still reigning president, influential and untouchable. But smart people keep their friends close, and their enemies closer. Being two steps ahead is not enough of a waypoint as far as Camila is concerned.

And thus, she weaves a web of nerds and drama kids and almost pretty girls, people she’s always been nice to and who’ve always liked her. One should never underestimate people’s willingness to betray their own in exchange for the approval of the powerful majority.

It’s Friday and Camila’s lost in thought in one of the bathrooms of the second floor when she’s approached by a girl with long, copper-colored hair.

“C-Camila?” she stutters.

Camila fights the urge to roll her eyes because in these times of political need, she can’t afford to act however she wants. “Hi,” she says, turning to give her attention to the girl with a smile on her face. Camila knows she’s the current sophomore class president until election day but can’t remember her name even though she should. This girl is one of those who would sell her soul for popularity. “Can I help you, hum - what’s your name again?”

“Katie,” the girl replies, not at all offended that Camila didn’t know that. She checks the stalls before she speaks again. “I thought you should know that Lauren is planning a campaign event.”

“Oh, is she?”

“Yeah. I don’t know when it will happen but there’s been talk of getting a catering service so they can give away cupcakes while handing out flyers and buttons.”

Camila narrows her eyes, studying the girl. “Catering service?”

“Some kid’s mom owns a bakery and he said he could get a few batches of cupcakes for free. To help with the campaign, I mean.” Katie keeps shifting on her feet, nervous energy coming off of her in waves.

“What kid?”

“Jacob Sartorius.”

“Jacob Sartorius?” Camila shakes her head. “Who even is that?”

“He’s a freshman,” Katie says, shrugging. “Skinny, wears those thick-framed type of glasses, hair makes up half of his height?”

Camila snickers. “Do you know this boy?”

“Yeah, like, we say hi in the halls and stuff?”

“Good.” Camila places both her hands on the girl’s shoulders and stares deep into her eyes. “Tell him to meet me behind the gym at 4:30.”

Katie nods, and Camila finds it a mix of cute and sickening that she looks like she’s been given a life-changing mission.

“Will do, Camila!” she says, bobbing her head up and down until Camila releases her shoulders and signals for her to leave with a thanks. “Bye!”

“You’re late,” Camila drawls when she spots a lanky boy with his hair two inches up in the air walking towards her. She repositions herself so only her shoulder is leaning against the wall as she faces this Jacob creature.

“Sorry,” he mumbles, blushing. “I thought this was a prank.”

Camila smirks. “I can see why you would think that but no, this isn’t a prank.”

“Am I in trouble?”

“Not if you help me.”

“I don’t see how I can help you, I’m sorry.” To his credit, Jacob looks genuinely rueful. The poor thing has no idea what he’s doing, talking to Camila Cabello in secret.

“I hear your mom owns a bakery, is that true?”

“Yes.” He moves closer and stands next to her, hands behind his back as he also leans against the wall. “You need a catering service too?”

“Too?”

“Well yeah, Lauren Jauregui–” Camila cringes as Jacob mispronounces the surname but he doesn’t notice, “–is doing some campaign event next week and she asked if I could get her some free cupcakes so I figured you were after the same thing?”

“If I ever need cupcakes from your bakery, I’ll make sure to pay your mom for her excellent service,” Camila informs him, smiling sweetly. “In fact, do you have a card or is there a website I can visit?”

“Place is called Baked Bites,” Jacob says, returning her smile. “You can look it up on Facebook or Instagram.”

“I will,” she assures him. She’ll order a box of goods to take home to her family, at least, and make sure that reaches Jacob’s ears. Favors are paid with other favors. “Now there is something I would like you to do for me, if you’re up for that?”

“Sure. What do you need?”

“Those free cupcakes that Jauregui is getting for her campaign…” She pauses on purpose, gauging his reaction. “What would have to happen for them to be… less than perfect cupcakes?”

“What are you getting at?” He squints his eyes, suspicious. “This is my mom’s business we’re talking about. I don’t want to cause her trouble.”

“Oh, you wouldn’t, don’t worry!” Camila cuts, eyes wide with innocence. “Ally Hernandez loves baking, I’m sure she’ll do her own batch for the event. We’ll blame it on her.”

Jacob laughs at that, his hair shaking with his movements. “Alright. I guess I could be persuaded then. What’s in it for me?”

Camila’s lips curl up smugly. “Name your price, Jacob. I’ll make it happen.”

Welcome to Stamford Pt 4

Okay so how long has it been of sever writers block, crossed with an earthquake and to many hours at work? Weeks, months? I don’t know but all I know is im back, and this ladies and dudettes is what I call- ‘you know when you have written like 3 chapters and you think they are all shit so you re-write them and you spew corny shit all over the pages’! But I needed to give you guys something, you were begging me and I felt bad. So please don’t kill me for this.

Now the way I see Finn in this, is different. He’s more loveable, cheerful and what I think FUNNY??

Just think of the way Nico acts in real life. I always see moody Finn and grumpy Finn… what about happy Finn. But hey if you don’t like it, then pass this on as a flake.

Now my writing is meh? I haven’t written in so long and this was a spur of the moment thing where I had to write this down before it disappeared.

I could see the blush invade her ivory skin, her plump cheeks turning a glorious shade of crimson red. Her eyes avoiding mine as I tried in vain to see those deep chocolate irises of hers.

I knew she was embarrassed. The all mighty Rae with a mouth as lethal as a gun was stunned in silence.

I could hear Archie briefly chuckle under his breath before my eyes flicked to his. It was a moment of gratitude when he cleared his throat and straightened his posture, not muttering a single word more. I didn't need to give this girl a reason to run.

I couldn't help the broad smirk stretch across my face, not that she would even notice. No she was too busy playing with the loose threat of her shirt. Dazed by her own lyrical words, and most likely regretting the last five minutes of her life.

"Oh really" I couldn't help but question with a little pep to my words. I won't lie, I was enjoying this. Watching her body squirm under my gaze like I was her weakness, I felt powerful but also very amused.

I straightened to my full height but kept my arms crossed across my chest, my smile never fading. This girl was really something.

"Go on..." I asked as I lifted an eyebrow, my gaze never wavers from hers.

Her head shot up, I could see her brain ticking away. Most likely over thinking the situation she got herself into.

“I... ugh- I only just read that part" she stuttered barely above a whisper.

Before I had the chance to reply to the vixen my view was obstructed. Blue eyes pierced into mine, it wasn't a foreign experience looking into them but it was an experience I unfortunately discovered one too many times.

"Hiya Finn" Her slightly squeaky voice made me shutter. I learnt a few months back that Chloe wasn't going to give up, yes I might have led her on at the start, body first, mind second. I am a guy, and nobody in their right mind can say they have never done or won’t ever do something like that. By the time I learnt other aspects about Chloe, the way she coolly spoke about other females, her slightly flirtatious fingers that wondered a bit too much along the planes of my body I realised we had nothing in common. She likes attention, I hated it. That was more than enough reason to keep away. I hadn't even kissed the girl and I have to fend her off with a spatula.

Her finger nails slide alone my shirt, whilst her other hand tangled through her hair, twirling her locks into a tight knot. Ha! Hope her fingers get fucking stuck.

"Chloe" I nodded, removing her hand and backing up slightly. I noticed her smile drop before her fake facade crept its way back onto her face.

"I was thinking that maybe we could hang out again tomorrow night" her sickly sweet voice was drumming through my head. I noticed her eyes flick back towards Rae who still looked like a deer in headlights. A smug smirk etched its way onto her slim face, and I knew exactly what was going on.

I knew at that moment she was marking her territory. Fuck, she might as well just cock her leg and piss on me instead. I've had numerous girls attempt this, and all of them failed. I was not some object, I liked my space and I liked to make my own decisions. And right now my own monologue sounded like a pre-teen-fucking-girl.

"Actually chlo" I spoke coolly, fuck I hope this worked. "Rae and I already had plans".

Four mouths dropped in unison, but only two mouths spoke- or yelled.

"What" Chloe and Rae were in sync, both tones slightly pitchy but I gave it a C+ for effort.

"Maybe all that erotic smut has seeped too far into that head of yours Rae" I wiggled my eyebrows to emphasize what I meant; "If you don't remember us having plans tonight, then maybe I should just drag you away now".

I hoped to God Rae played along with this one, my eyes were pleading to her. I could see the sparkle of mischief in those doe eyes, it manifested in self into a full blown grin and I was nearly knocked of my feet.

Two rows of while teeth, cute little dimples that sat on the edge of her beautiful smile, and I even noticed the wrinkle she got near her eye.

God, this sad sap of and man could just reach out and pinch the roundness of her cheeks like an overbearing Grandma. I have officially lost my balls.

"Oh that. Sorry totally forgot, ugh. Well all I really remember is that you- you promised me pizza all expenses paid for and I can't really turn that down" Rae was a natural liar, I wasn't sure to be scared or amazed.

"You sure you need the pizza" Chloe mumbled under her breath, but I know that Rae and the others had heard her snide comment.

Just as I was about to say something in return, I heard Rae speak up. To say I was shocked was an understatement, to say I was now stiff as a board down stairs was completely accurate. Oh the bite in her words was beyond erotic.

"Well Chlo, yeah I do. An ass like this doesn't stay this round by only eating salad. Maybe you should try it one day; I mean it might give them something to look at from behind".

SHE HAD ME. HOOK. LINE. SINKER.

My arm was then suddenly torn from my body, blood spraying the weak as zombies raided the school demolishing those who couldn’t run fast enough. Poor Chloe dead, her jugular spraying warm blood one the walls… is what I wanted to narrate but really it was Rae pulling me along towards the library exit whilst I threw I peace sign over my shoulder to gayer, red and blow –up Barbie. Oh I could so be a writer.

She let me go from her clutches as soon as we were far enough away and stopped awkwardly. She smelled like coconut, her face flushed red, and her tacky bag just hung limp from her hand.

“Okay well this was fun- ugh… See ya!” have you ever watched a girl speed walk away from you like you just announced that you had leprosy? Well that was what Rae was currently doing and I must say my ego wasn’t too impressed.

“HEY!” I yelled, which caused her to walk a little faster. I swear she could win Olympic gold with that stride.

“Rae Stop! I mean it…” shit this was not working. She had managed to cross the quad and head towards the front of the school. I knew once she made it out of the gate I would lose her. So many possible ways she could turn and with a walk like that I wouldn’t be surprised if she walked all the way to London by the time I made it to the chippy.

It was time to officially lose any street cred that I had.

Operation embarrass-the-shit-out-of-rae-until-she-stops comenses.

“Rae Earl! How could you do that to me! Kiss me then leave me for another!” I yelled, fake sobs raked my body and any student between her and I gawked. Including Rae herself, excellent.

“You told me it was only me!” I continued, falling to my knees in a dramatic fashion.

I looked at the ground as she started to cuss in my direction. I didn’t need to see her to know she was currently heading my way.

“Get the fuck up Finn”.

“Why don’t you love me anymore?” I wailed waving my hands in the air like a mother giving birth. I really shouldn’t have dropped drama class. I was just imagining my name in flashing lights- Finn ‘the knicker dropper’ Nelson, God of the theatre. Ultra sexy alter ego named ‘Nico mirallegro’ king of the Italian mafia. (Always had a thing for Italian names, sue me!)

“If I wanted to listen to an asshole Finn, I’d fart. Now get the fuck up!” Rae’s face was just a whisper from my ear and I couldn’t help but crack a large grin as I got back to my knees.

“You had me at hello” I spoke lustfully giving her a good ol’ wink.

“You’re a pervert! Why the fuck did you just do that to me… and you? Aren’t you worried about your reputation! God you are so stupid” she smacked her palm on her forehead and huffed.

I sighed. “Why would I care what any of these people think?” twisting my brows together as I saw the shock on her face. “… and plus the way you were walking you’ve be in Australia before I knew it. I wanted you to stop”.

She gave me a look as to say ‘why?’ and I breathed heavily… well ive already gone this far.

“I thought we had plans… you know-pizza?”

“You meant that?” I nodded.

“Oh well I thought you were just saying that to get away from Chloe” I rubbed my face with my hands and then looked straight into her chocolate eyes.

“You intrigue me Rae. You act different, you look different. I need a change in my life. So what do you say? Pizza…?”

Ohkay who the fuck am i, and what have i just done to grumpy Finn. i took me years to perfect that grunt, and in a matter of 10 minutes she just managed to turn me into a completely different person. Ohkay maybe i need to rethink my acting career, im not good at staying in character.

FACEBOOK’s Tensions With Advertisers Predate Boycott…

In a virtual town hall with marketers and advertising agencies on Tuesday, Facebook Inc. executives once again tried to answer complaints that the company hasn’t done enough to counter hate speech and misinformation.

Led by Carolyn Everson, vice president of Facebook’s Global Business Group, executives described efforts to make the Facebook and Instagram platforms less hostile and the difficulty of moderating conversations without constraining speech, according to participants.

It was just the latest effort by Facebook to show that the social-media giant takes seriously the concerns about its policies. But the company isn’t only confronting the challenge sparked on June 17, when several civil-rights groups called on advertisers to pull their spending as a way to pressure Facebook into changing the way it handles content. Facebook is also facing discontent from advertisers stretching back years.

“The history really helped everyone feel pretty vindicated in taking this action and being serious about it,” said Katia Beauchamp, co-founder and chief executive at beauty retailer Birchbox Inc., which joined the boycott on June 26.

That history includes the revelation in 2018 that personal data of tens of millions of Facebook users improperly wound up with data firm Cambridge Analytica, prompting government probes and calls for stricter privacy protections online.

Marketers have also criticized Facebook for the way it handles measurement on its platform and what some call a lack of commitment to brand safety—keeping their ads away from objectionable content.

A Facebook spokeswoman pointed to the company’s announcement on Monday about a new audit, run by industry watchdog Media Rating Council. It will evaluate Facebook’s content monetization and brand-safety tools and practices as part of new initiatives the company is undertaking in response to recent criticisms.

Other companies that have paused ad spending with Facebook now include Volkswagen AG, Ford Motor Co., Clorox Co., Denny’s Corp., Verizon Communications Inc., Coca-Cola Co., Unilever PLC, Levi Strauss & Co., along with smaller brands.

Some have also suspended advertising elsewhere in social media, and not all are identifying themselves with the boycott effort. More have focused directly on Facebook.

“Marketers’ dissatisfaction goes way back,” said Joy Howard, chief marketing officer at password manager Dashlane Inc., which said it won’t advertise with Facebook at least through July, the month targeted by boycott organizers.

Ms. Howard participated in an earlier, one-week boycott of Facebook advertising over Cambridge Analytica when she was chief marketing officer at Sonos Inc., she said.

At Dashlane, her team was already trying to reduce reliance on Facebook over concerns about content even before the boycott call, she said, but also because of controversy over the potential for discriminatory advertising several years ago.

Facebook said then it would no longer let marketers target housing, employment and credit-related ads by ethnic affinity. In March 2019 the company settled five discrimination lawsuits in part by also removing age, gender and ZIP Code targeting for housing, employment and credit-related ads.

Facebook is also still trying to bolster advertisers’ trust in the metrics it provides, going back to the 2016 disclosure that it had overestimated average viewing time for video ads on its platform for two years.

The Media Rating Council warned Facebook this spring that it could be denied a seal of approval that gives companies confidence they are getting what they pay for when it comes to advertising on its platforms.

The notice said that Facebook had failed to address advertiser concerns arising from a 2019 audit performed by Ernst & Young, most notably concerning how Facebook measures and reports data about video advertisements.

“These exchanges are part of the audit process,” Facebook said in May. “We will continue working with MRC on accreditation, as we have since 2016.”

Each incident has created blowback from advertisers, but Facebook has managed to continue to grow ad revenue. It reported companywide ad revenue of $69.7 billion last year, up from $55 billion in 2018 and $17.1 billion in 2015.

Facebook and Instagram’s U.S. ad revenue alone is expected to grow nearly 5% to $31.43 billion this year, according to research firm eMarketer.

Even as the list of major marketers now suspending their advertising grows, Facebook remains somewhat protected because the bulk of its revenue comes from small and midsize companies. Facebook’s top 100 advertisers comprised less than 20% of its total ad revenue in the first quarter of 2019, Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg said last year.

Many small companies and marketers that sell directly to consumers without going through retailers would suffer more than a major multinational from a Facebook boycott, said Kevin Simonson, vice president of social for digital marketing agency Wpromote LLC.

The business model of most consumer brands that sell primarily through the internet relies heavily on Facebook and Instagram, Mr. Simonson said. “So for them to pause their main source of revenue would be devastating to their business in ways that it won’t for a vast majority of the big brands participating in the boycott.”

Particularly for prominent brands, however, the current confrontation may be different than past strife because it revolves around broad ethical issues rather than concerns largely specific to the ad industry, some ad executives said.

“The difference this time is that CMOs are getting pressure from their boards, and the boards are getting pressure from the public and advocacy groups,” said an executive at a large ad-agency holding company.

Facebook said that it invests billions of dollars every year to keep its platform safe and has banned 250 white-supremacist organizations from Facebook and Instagram. Facebook’s technology finds nearly 90% of hate speech before anyone flags it, the company said.

“We know we have more work to do,” Facebook said, adding that it would continue to work with Global Alliance for Responsible Media, an ad-industry group created to improve the digital ecosystem, and others.

The fight against hate speech overlaps with a longtime business concern of marketers in the digital age: keeping their ads far from offensive content.

Verizon suspended its advertising on Facebook and Instagram after the Anti-Defamation League released a screenshot showing a Verizon ad next to a Facebook post alleging that FEMA was getting ready to put people in concentration camps. The ADL is one of the organizers of the boycott.

“We’re pausing our advertising until Facebook can create an acceptable solution that makes us comfortable and is consistent with what we’ve done with YouTube and other partners,” Verizon Chief Media Officer John Nitti said on June 25.

The Facebook spokeswoman declined to comment on Verizon’s decision.

“There’s more to it than issues of misinformation and hate speech,” an ad buyer at a major advertising agency said. “Facebook needs to invest more in keeping advertisers away from objectionable content.”

Up in the sky

These are the facts, as they happened.

It had been about an hour and a half since we took off, and they'd served dinner, which I ate with satisfaction prior to brushing my teeth. I had finally put on my ear muffs and covered my head with a blanket, after taking two hydroxyzine to help me fall asleep. As I was drifting in the direction of sleep, I heard on the overhead, "There is a passenger in need of medical assistance. If you have medical training and can assist, please proceed to the back of the plane."

First I pulled the blanket off my head. Next I pulled off my ear muffs. I thought for a second, and then looked around. Considering doctors are a dime a dozen in the developing African nation we just left from, I expected to see 20 people standing up and proceeding to the back of the plane.

No one.

Alright, here we go, I thought.

Upon arriving to the back area of the plane, where the attendants prepare food, I found a 40-year old female missionary sitting on one of the flight attendant's pull down chairs, with several of her missionary lady friends surrounding her. There was also what appeared to be a doctor who had responded from first class to come help.  I listened in for a second, and was able to gather that the patient ("Grace") had been feeling nauseas a couple hours before the flight, and upon boarding, became vomiting repeatedly and having diarrhea too.

I discussed the case with the doctor. When the doctor said, "If we had some zofran," I said, "I have some." Before I could go get it though, one of the flight attendants suddenly produced a first aid kit in a long metal box.

At around that time, another flight attendant I did not recognize suddenly appeared, looked at me, and said, "She's a doctor," pointing at the African doctor. I immediately responded to her, "Yes. I am too."

We broke the seal on the first aid kit, and opened it.

Quite the curious hodgepodge of items that medical kit was. There were odd non-sterile bandages with "Made in China. Guaranteed sterile" on them, drugs that the doctor and I had never even heard of before, syringes without needles, and quite a few other items equally perplexing. There was an inventory list too, which stated "injectable promethazine" was supposedly included inside. While we began the search for the promethazine, I mentioned that promethazine is an extremely dangerous drug, and can lead to extreme necrosis if not properly administered deep IM or IV.

Luckily, we didn't find the injectable promethazine.

Shortly after I grabbed the oral zofran from my bag, the head flight attendant started asking us if we needed to do an emergency landing.

I had already talked to the patient, checked skin turgor, asked her about when she last urinated, and how dry her mouth was.

I looked at the doctor while answering the flight attendant, as if for consensus, and stated that I thought we could try to manage the patient for now, without any drastic measures. We could try doing oral rehydration and zofran. I mean, where were we going to do an emergency landing right now, Libya?

Apparently one of the missionary friends of the patient was a nurse, and she spoke up to state as much. She asked if we had any IV fluids in the kit. Yes, we replied, but only 500cc. We would try to manage with zofran by mouth first.

About the time that we had come to that conclusion, the patient started losing consciousness.

The doctor and I immediately looked at each other and said, "Ok. IV fluids."

I then addressed the nurse and the doctor and said, "So which one of us is best at IV catheters?"

For the nurse, that seemed to be a call to action. She said, "I got it. Give me the fluids and the line."

I told her I would help her out, as I'm also a Paramedic. I was shuffling through the equipment trying to find what we needed, noting what we didn't have as I compiled supplies. "Don't have a tourniquet," I mentioned in passing. "Okay, we can cut a glove in half and use that," replied the doctor.  We discussed IV sizes for a moment, and eventually I handed her a 20 gauge IV. After we found the alcohol preps, she began the IV placement process as I looked for tape to tape the IV.

When eventually I compiled all the IV secural supplies, I looked over at the nurse.

Things didn't look good.

She was inserting a bare IV needle into the patient's R hand vein.

First, I said, "So, you're going to put a 20 in the hand?" She replied, "Yes, I do this all the time."

I said, "Ok, I guess we can put 500cc through the hand. But you don't have a catheter on the needle."

She said, "I thought we'd just do a straight stick."

I didn't continue to mention that the needle inside an IV catheter is actually way too small diameter to actually give fluids through, and the only purpose of it is to confirm placement of the IV in a vein by showing a "flash of blood."

As her "attempt" failed, I thought to myself, "Oh shit. I'm the only one on this plane who can do this shit."

I grabbed another 20 and tied the glove high up on the arm to look at the AC. First, I could palpate it well. I said, "She's got a good AC."

The doctor thought to mention that I didn't have gloves on, which isn't all that abnormal for me. I said it was okay.

Then the glove-tourniquet popped off, and I couldn't palpate anything the next time I tied it.

Finally, "Ok, I feel it again."

I went in.

Nothing, no flash.

Shit.

Dug around a bit.

Nothing, no flash.

Doctor, nurse, two missionary friends, patient, three flight attendants all watching, hoping I can get it.

Nothing.

I palpate the vein again, and its several mm medial to wear I am.

All turbulence must have led to some patient movement, and I was in the wrong spot. I could move through the subnormal space to get over there, but it was a long shot.

I tried, and I got flash. I was in the vein.

Trying to advance the catheter off the needle, it wouldn't advance completely. All of a sudden things didn't look as good.  Too late though, because I'd already said out loud, "I got it." Had to make it work now.

Pulling the needle all the way out and leaving the catheter in place, I put the needle in a sharps container and noted no blood was flowing out - meaning it wasn't in the vein. I retracted it a bit, and sure enough, blood flow.

All over my hands.

It was in, but just barely.

I held the IV steady against the patient's arm, as the nurse hooked up the IV fluid line.

I instructed one of the missionary friends to squeeze the saline box - that's right, IV fluids in Africa comes in a box more often than a bag - in order to speed up the infusion. It was slow progress, but after we had infused about 200cc of fluid, the patient's mental status changed, and she even stated out loud that she felt better.

Unfortunately though, the fluid wasn't flowing anymore.

I didn't note any infiltration, so it didn't seem like the IV was bad. We turned our focus to the box and line, and first the nurse uncapped some valve that neither of us had seen on an IV line before. We thought that might be helping initially.

My hands were tied, but next I told the doctor to check the roller clamp. She said, "it's up high, but it seems to just roll when I move it higher."

"That means it's completely unclamped," I told her.

Eventually the nurse suggested positional occlusion, which I had considered but not stated out loud. Moving the patient's arm around a bit, we started to get better flow.

It probably took 45 minutes to infuse 350 cc.

Eventually I had the nurse take over holding the IV in place, because I had noticed a BP cuff in the first aid kit and wanted to check the patient's blood pressure on the other arm.

When I did, I found it to be 92/60.  The flight attendant asked, "Is that bad."

The doctor spoke up, saying, "Technically it's within normal range....."

I was thinking, "Bad."

After we finished our IV therapy, the doctor and I put together a treatment plan. Missionary friends had cleared out a row for the patient to lie semi-sitting. The doctor had asked if the patient could lie in first class, but of course, that wasn't happening.

Before we could enact our treatment plan, someone came back and asked for the doctor's help, as another patient had a "severe head ache." Jokingly, I turned to the doctor and said, "This is how it starts. One person gets sick, and then all the other passengers see it and decide they're sick too. I've seen this movie."

The doctor grabbed the blood pressure cuff to go  triage our second patient, as I stayed with Grace and told her what the plan was. We're going to have her chew the zofran, and try to sip some fluids, and get some rest.

She was dizzy on owalking, but we guided her back to her row. I was a bit displeased to see the missionaries were lying her down - that's not exactly the position I wanted.

"We don't really want her lying down, so if she vomits, she can breathe it in."

As was happening increasingly, the nurse slighted my advice and stated, "No, I'll keep an eye on her."

Ok fine.

At about that time, I returned to the back and found the African doctor. She asked me what specialty I was in and where I practiced. I said, "Emergency medicine." She said, "Oh wonderful. I'm an internist, so this isn't my specialty."

She disappeared, and I never saw her again.

Less than an hour later, Grace was vomiting again. She vomited all the fluid that the nurse had coached her to sip and a bit more, probably 150 cc. Grace said to me, "It feels like bile." I looked at the vomit and said, "Some of it is bile, but regardless, you're losing fluid, and we don't want that."  

That was the end of hour four. It was an 8 hour flight.

Grace's blood pressure held for hour five, and six, and we administered several more doses of zofran.

As her BP's continued to hold just above 100, I instructed the nurse to keep having Grace sip water whenever her nausea level was less than 6/10 - in coordination with our zofran doses. The nurse pushed back. I said, "It's the bacteria that's causing her to need to vomit, not the water." The nurse said, "Yes, but the water isn't helping."

I tried to be patient with the nurse and explain on multiple occasions (I was visiting the patient every 30 minutes or so, taking her vitals by putting my watch on her wrist as a heart rate monitor and doing a manual BP), that the patient had lost a lot of volume, and we had only placed 500cc of it.

She was in a very fragile state, even if it didn't seem like it. Nonetheless, the patient was resting, so I let her rest. I communicated that I was hesitant to dose her at more than one zofran per hour - which was already way too much considering this was the 8mg zofran tablets.

At hour five of the flight, things took a turn for the worse when Grace started having severe diarrhea again. She went into the bathroom and flushed three times.

I took Grace's blood pressure again, and it had dropped precipitously. 88/54.

She was now hypotensive. Her heart rate was also over 100, as the heart tried to compensate for the lack of volume.

I looked at the nurse and her young missionary accompany, and I said, "This is a very unique situation. Not having the medication you need."

I looked down, and thought. Then I looked up at Grace, and, speaking very softly, I said, "Grace we just gave you a Zofran 40 minutes ago. I know your nausea is a 7/10, but I'm going to have to have you take another Zofran, so that you can drink some water. As a doctor, I know exactly how much fluid is in your arteries and veins right now, and it's not good. We have to replace some of that."

Before Grace could take my next Zofran, she was back in the bathroom again having more diarrhea. When she came back out, she was in and our of consciousness.

I had put up with the nurse's bullshit enough, and now I was taking charge. "She's goning to stay right here. We're going to do another zofran. And in 10 minutes were going to start pushing fluids. Otherwise, we're going to wind up right back where we started, and this time we won't even have 500cc of fluids to save us."

And that's what we did.

One of the flight attendants who was hovering asked if we should give her some Sprite.

"No, the sugar makes diarrhea worse. What she really needs is Pedialite, but I doubt anyone has any."

Someone mentioned as an aside that we could put some salt in her water. I said okay, we'll do that (I'm usually not opposed to something that is sound and can't hurt). When the flight attendant brought.a couple packets of salt over, the young missionary girl opened one up and started to pour it in the water.

"No," I said. "Don't bother. It will just sink to the bottom." Then, I had Grace protrude her tongue, and I poured salt on her tongue, after which she drank some water. I was sincerely hoping it wouldn't cause her to vomit, and I guess since we had so much zofran on board, it didn't."

Another flight attendant appeared and handed me a vomit bag to write on. "Can you please write what is going on with the patient so the pilot can radio the tower."

I wrote,

"Hypotensive patient. Losing consciousness. Severely dehydrated."

Then, I thought for a second, and realized I hadn't really followed traditional medical report formatting. So I added,

"40-year old female. Severe nausea and vomiting."

Alright, that spruced things up.

I read it to the nurse, and she seemed to agree with me that what I wrote was a pretty concise and accurate depiction of things.

As we neared landing, we moved Grace back to a row and had her sit up so we could buckle her in for landing.  I sat next to Grace, and as I monitored her level of consciousness and pulse, I finished up a report I was writing in my notebook to give to the paramedics when we arrived in Dublin. It was mostly her demographic info, allergies and medical conditions (none), and a narrative followed by vital signs.

The chief flight attendant came over and let us know that paramedics would be coming onto the plane. They would need to do their own assessment, the flight attendant said. "Of course. That's fine." I said. "But I need you to make sure that there aren't all sorts of people standing in the isle blocking their way," I replied. She said, "Of course. No one wills and."

As we landed, I took the stethoscope back from the nurse, who had been holding it for me. I put it around my neck and said, "This will make me look a bit more official."

After we landed, the flight attendants read a message that literally said, "Thank you for choosing Easet African Airlines for your flight today. Whether your final destination is the Big City or you're continuing on, we thank you for your loyalty."

That's when I realized the flight attendants were going to do a crew change, and those with me now were probably most interested in getting the hell out of there.

And that's about how it went. I walked up front to the door, and repeatedly asked the flight attendants to have all the passengers sit. At one point a man even charged up to me with his bag, and said, "Big City?"

No, she informed him, we're not in the Big City yet.

The young missionary girl came to the front, and I told her, "Get these people out of the isle. I'm about to yell at all of them in 30 seconds here."

She tried to, but it's hard persuading Africans sometimes.

The door was opened, and immediately outside I saw workers from the Dublin crew. I couldn't tell who was EMS, so I started hinting at them and saying, "Are you a paramedic? Are you a medic?" NO, no, they said.

They pointed down at the end of a set of stairs that had been attackhed to the door, and I saw an ambulance. I saw what I thought might be too paramedics still sitting int he carin.

It seemed a natural connection of dots for me to hop out the door and head down to give them report and accompany them up, but when I did, the flight attendants immediately yelled at me, "No, no, come back. You cannot walk out there."

Sure were better at keeping people off the starts then out of the isle.

I checked the isle once more, and I saw a lot of people still in the isle.

I started yelling. Oh shit. I'm yelling on a plane.

About that time, I realized they were actually bringing Grace to me.

Probably not a bad idea.

Grace arrived, and almost immediately thereafter, the Paramedics were at the door. I addressed the one who arrived first, and gave report. He said, "So it looks like she needs a visit to the hospital and some IV fluids."

I said, "Yes, definitely. Can you give her some fluids en route to the hospital."

"No," he said. "We don't do IV fluids here. WE could give some zofran, but sounds like you've already done that."

Oh wow.

While I was hoping things were over, they weren't.

This was supposed to be a re-fuelign stop and passengers weren't supposed to be leaving the plane. Grace, and the missionary who had been elected to go with her, were having their passports and tickets analyzed and photographed.

Geez, come on.

As the EMS team and I wanted, I handed my report to them.

Finally, I looked at the official inspecting the documents, and I said, "Can she go."

"Yes, yes," he said.

And she went.

That was that.

De-planing, I went up to the pilot and told him the first aid kit needs to be restocked. He discussed the incident with me a bit.

He asked if they took down my name and email address and phone number. I said, "Yes. I hope I don't get in trouble." He said, "Well you never know, you might get a free ticket to Wakanda."

I would like that, I said. I would like that a lot.

Episode 10 - I’m So Dumb ~ Bryce

Okay I love an instant tribal! SIKE. I was in the car having to just yolo what was happening. I voted linus and was right so iconic! I need to make sure eric knows I didn't vote him so that we can work together. Jackson wanted linus gone and Richie wanted Eric gone so I had to choose a side. I went with voting linus because I thought that it would let  me be closer to trixie and quillynn that way and possibly take a shot at regan because i was afraid her and linus were close. Now I need to make sure to work with Richie tho so that we're close and actually maybe vote eric idk? Theres a lot of power players and atm Jackson is my partner but he could be playing everyone. I still have my idol at f7 which is so fun only two more oppurtunities to use it so I might be targeted. Me Eric Jackson Trixie Quillynn all have our idols i think maybe regan too. SO its awk I think Im playing my idol next time or  I need to make a strong 4. I think that I can get richie I just need to see who voted who in this round. I think the eric votes were richiex2 and regan and linus. so everyone else didnt vote that way. Also richie played his idol because regan didnt respond to him so maybe they arent as close as i thought they were.

Hi I'm Jackson and this is my nine-and-a-halfth confessional. I'm writing this after the instant tribal because it was wild and I know Rob is thirsting for the details 👀 So at the first tribal, everything went the way I had hoped. RTP went home (although not before dropping another vote my way, I wonder if he hates me lol) and Richie wasted his idol! Woo! My purposely acting super fake worked. I waited hours to respond to his messages and then acted super overly nice like I was planning to blindside him and he bought it. I love reverse snakeology ! So then Rob finally dropped the bomb on us that the lists we had submitted of who we want voted out most to who we want out the least were for an instant tribal. We only got thirty minutes to decide who to vote out (and everybody who wasn't around voted based on their list), with Regan being immune since she got the burger from the survivor auction. So I hit the ground running. I immediately hit up Quillynn and Trixie and floated the idea of taking Linus out. It was the safest option, and if Richie's envelope advantage turned out to be a clue to another idol, it was best to not go for him on such short notice. Then I was approached by Bryce and Richie, and I was able to get Richie to admit to me that his advantage was actually a double vote. I didn't want to believe it 100% until he actually played it, but fortunately he did so in his effort to blindside Eric, which I eventually decided not to be a part of. Eric was super extra on the live tribal and I think he's rubbing people the wrong way (including Rob oop) so he's a good person to bring farther into the game I believe. In the end, Linus was voted out 5-4 (with the votes for Eric being from Linus, Richie's doublevote, and Regan who went by her list), and I'm pretty satisfied. I would've been happy if Eric played his idol but I think we can make it work next round. I hadn't forgotten about Linus' flipping on Akito (who I would've taken to the final 3 in a heartbeat) and it felt good to give it right back to him. Okay that's about all that happened on my end, I'm ready to try to get that immunity necklace back. Byeee

okay so im a fucking mess in this game.... i played my idol and wasted it because there was some mysterious figure going around throwing my name out.. everyone but jackson came to me and said that my name was being thrown out and regan told me that she was told to tell rtp my name so clearly shit is going down but before the vote i hadnt heard from regan when i confronted her about rtp telling me that regan threw my name out so i was paranoid and i played my idol and it was dumb because hi instant tribal 2 minutes later!!! the instant was terrible because only me, jackson, eric, and bryce were online so trixie, linus, regan & quillynn couldnt be contacted to discuss the vote so half of the votes were a mystery.... linus was my #1, i have a good relationship with regan and trixie, ive had some game talks with bryce and quillynn that i feel like i could work with them if i needed to so it seemed like eric was the person i had the least connection with on this tribe but he was online so he would be able to play an idol if he thought he was in trouble... also the other name being thrown around was linus and i did not want that at alllllllllll.... i probably should have tried to throw one of the people who werent online at the time under the bus so that the fear of an idol play wouldnt be there but that would have only been regan, trixie, or quillynn and i didnt want to vote out regan or trixie under any reason and i know jackson and q are friends bc he's her mood message theyre not subtle so like i couldnt get jackson on my side for that so i came up with a plan that if me jackson and bryce all vote for eric thats 3/8 and i play my double vote advantage i won in the auction then thats 4/8 which would be enough to cause a tie but i was saying that since the people who werent active at the time would have their votes be cast by their lists that the votes would be all over the place so that the vote would look something like a 4-2-1-1 or something of the sort so that our 4 would have the majority.... and to ensure that eric wouldnt play his idol i went to him and ensured him that the plan was to vote out whoever he wanted and sell the fact i was with him none of that worked askdjhfkasjdfhaksfjh it came down to 4-4 votes between linus and eric and then the last vote comes in andddddddd it's for linus.... so not only did my closest and only real ally in this game leave but i also played my idol and my advantage + i just lied and fucked over eric so hes still in the game knowing that i just lied to him and used my advantage to try and vote him out......... im fucked huh lmao 

Regan Medevaced

Alright, so time to explain my full strategy since I haven't really had time to make full confessionals. My main alliance is with Jackson and Trixie, where I have been going under the radar, trying for Jackson to make all the moves for me, while I slide past another tribal. Jackson is also the only person I can trust because he trusts me. Richie and I had something going but he probably voted against me last tribal, so I have to rethink that. Quillynn NEEDS to go because trixie and quill will obviously take eachother to finals. I need trixie to trust jackson and myself more. I also need bryce and richie to think we are turning on eachother because I wouldn't be surprised if they thought we had something going on. I am glad my UTR strategy got me to f6 but this is when I need to make my move. I have something to say about having people make moves on my behalf, now I need to say I am capable of making my own moves. Wish me luck <3

IM SO DUMB LITERALLY I COULD HAVE WON IMMUNITY. I threw two questions so that eric wouldnt be extra mad at me and  then i lose by one point. and its f6 now so i wanted to win this I didnt care about f7 immunity. I wanted to be immune f6 idol f5 regan leaving is so annoying JKDSFJKSD its so easy to send in a list. I am going to have to blindside someone now or maybe idol ugh. I think eric is the easiest to blindside since hes away a lot. UGH more confessionals tomorrow i feel so dumb askdfhadsjkf

So I got Jackson on board my plan which is to get people to use their vote only on me so that I can waste their votes when I use my idol. There is no way I am not using it this round. Clearly the plan was a success because Richie came straight to me as soon as Jackson told me about the plan. The best person to go for my game right now would be Quillynn, so I would just have to throw the vote without telling a soul and praying that my plan worked.

I just told Jackson that he should vote me and I will vote someone else. If the plan goes perfectly, everyone will think the vote is me or Jackson, and I will have the deciding vote. The only thing to do now is to make people think that one person will unknowingly get a vote so that everyone doesn't freak out and play their idols.

Everyone is going to idol and its gonna be a mess! Woo!

I’ve offically tied my record in a survivor game by making it to top 6 and i’ve like barely tried compaired to my usual effort, I guess playing UTR does work huh. Also I doubt i’m leaing since we’ll like all be idoling

So my plan worked and now Richie at least appears to be going full on against Jackson (at least if what he has been telling me isn't lies). Right now, I could either go rogue and vote Quillynn, a move I need for my own game. This would be good for my game because Trixie and Quill have an obvious deal together, and I want Trixie to trust Jackson and myself more than Quill. But right now, if Jackson and I appear to be against eachother, it's also smart that we vote eachother expecting an idolpocalypse, which would reset the round with no one having idols. Although my current main target wouldn't be eliminated, Richie appears to be against Jackson, and Jackson now trusts me, and vice versa. I didn't even realize until it was all said and done that I basically asked Jackson to throw himself under the bus and he did just that for me. For that, he has my trust, for now. I don't know what's smarter for my game. I just want to make it to the next part of the game. This is definitely a thrussy thrasher.

Hi Have a question. My rear bumper was lightly tapped by 17 year old new driver. Damage is minor and cosmetic at $425. My car is only three years old and in perfect condition. The insured provided me all his insurance information and said to file a claim through his dad's insurance carrier. I called local police department 911 line to report minor collision. Officer responded and insured admitted to police officer that he tapped rear bumper. Police officer looked at my rear bumper and refused to make a police report as he said cannot issue a report unless damage is over $1500. I begged the officer repeatedly to please provide me even an incident report or something official like an affidavit as the teenager admitted to officer that he hit my rear bumper. Police Officer simply drove off and left me on the side of the road with a stranger. Of course now four weeks later, the insured and his father have simply ignored phone calls, emails and registered mail attempts by his insurance carrier to verify version. (not sure what version would be needed as my black paint is on his front bumper) I called the insured and his dad hung up on me twice. The insurance carrier told me they are denying and closing out the claim due to insured not responding. They said this is totally legal under Illinois State laws. I live in Southern California, I have been looking for work since I moved here from France. I posted a general sales resume on careerbuilder.com and have since been spammed by insurance agencies. Some have been good companies like State Farm and Farmers. Some have been less, like Colonial Life and Axa advisers. I believe Axa wanted me for a commissioned investment broker position. I didn't pass the personality test for State Farm, but I can try again in a year. I will have a strategy and research next time. Dental Insurance Company Denying Authorization for Covered Plan Services.?

Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net I was referred to an oral surgeon by my primary care dentist since I have to have 6 teeth and 2 residual root tips extracted in advance of getting a full upper denture. All the extractions including the root tips have to be done during one visit, which necessitates the use of IV sedation. My general dentist cannot perform any of this work. Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net denied the original pre-authorization request, and subsequent appeal stating that my general dentist can perform the services being referred. Which is absolutely not the case. I even spoke with a customer service rep who indicated that the extraction of residual root tips is definitely a referable service and it clearly states that in their Dental Net Provider Contract. She has no explanation for why the appeal was denied. My primary care dentist has even provided Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net with his specific reasons for referring this work to an oral surgeon and I still can't get anyone at Anthem Blue Cross to re-evaluate the original denial and the appeal and authorize the necessary work. I have filed a complaint with the California Department of Insurance, although I don't hold out much hope for any results from that effort. HELP... what are my options? Who can I contact? Thanks""

Back in April I was driving and a lady tried switching lanes and struck my vehicle. I immediately went to an auto body shop and got an estimate for the damage, they took photos and everything. In my state and probably many others now as well, there are three License tiers: Learners Permit, Provisional Drivers License, and Full License. Learners permit is pretty much self explanatory, you have to drive with a parent/guardian only and must hold it for 9 months to get to the Provisional License in the middle which allows you to drive fully unsupervised after you turn 18 with many restrictions before 18 but still carries increased penalties(what they consist of I am not sure but they are nonetheless there only for Provisional Licenses) even after you turn 18, and then after you hold a Provisionals for 18 months, you can finally get a full license. Obviously not having increased penalties would be nice but I'm wondering if Full License status would also reduce insurance rates since it shows that you were able to hold a Provisionals for so long without moving violations and are therefore not quite as problematic of a driver as someone who has not yet passed the 18-month probationary period required for a Full License. Clarification on what a Provisional License is for my age(20): The Provisional License is for all intents and purposes basically the same as a full drivers license after you turn 18 with the exception of enhanced penalties for moving violations which remain possible until you get a full license. I'm just curious if there are insurance benefits that come with a full license as well or if, for some absurd reason, they still base it on the old learners-then-license system, and then they go up after you get a full license because they think you are suddenly unsupervised, which is not the case with a Provisional License moving up to a Full License.""

I'll do my best to summarize my situation, and am using estimates for days and amounts... I received a quote for auto insurance for $590 for a 6 month period from an independent auto agent. When I received my insurance policy and premium price it way nearly double (over $1,100). I cancelled the policy within a week after receiving the huge increase in premiums. Because of the time it took for me to receive my new premium and the 5-7 days for me to cancel, I received a bill for an amount due of roughly $40.00. I previously had auto insurance through the company/agent but it was for a different vehicle and paid a month in advance. My question is, why am I responsible, and how am I responsible for the premium that is so much higher than what I was quoted? I didn't sign any paperwork, I called over the phone and had the agent switch the policy based on the new quote. The insurance inspector came out to inspect the vehicle on Tuesday theyre were alot of damage inside out. He said it was about $4,000.00 worth of damage. It maybe was going to be total loss. I mention to him that my vehicle is at my house when it should be in the tow yard, that it seems they are lacking holding off in helping me with this situation.
