four but we only talk about three of those😌🤘🏼

about 13.8k words (i have no idea where to look this up i typed it into my phone calculator lmao)

on my ao3 marauders, in the Docs marauders, haikyuu, atla and on Wattp*d🤬 young royals & shera lol (i was like 15 years old ok)

hmm i think Teeth actually? not really angsty but maybe it kind of makes you go 😬😳 or WAIT maybe my very first jeg microfic thing, the Stag one yknow.. where James is dead😁

again, from my ao3 one’s probably Ribs but microfics probably just all the fluffy ones, i’m looking at the cookie baking one here esp, also Walk and Carry

why yes i do. mm mostly the unhinged kind in some way hdksks but ig the lesbian wolfstar one is very tender too<3

not crossovers per se but we love a good AU of another fandom universe, my marauders Maze Runner Au is very dear to me, we’ll see if she ever sees the light of the day

this changes all the time honestly and they’re all very very close to each other but i’m gonna have to say iwaoi on top because their chemistry is just unmatched and something i hold so close to my heart, they just mean a lot of comfort to me! so thats prob why

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

hm, i mean i’m only 20 i have all the time in the world. but perhaps that one barty in a maids dress smut one shot? not sure i’ll come back to that one again but who knows!

16. What are your writing strengths?

i think i can do a dialogue quite good but it’s hard for me to get into a zone or scenario where it comes to that naturally, but whenever it does happen? i’m super happy and proud of the result (that’s why i like my hitmen jegulus microfic so much)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

probably that i’m not really good at creating a storyline/plot djskks that’s something that does Not come easily to me and probably one of the only reasons i havent really finished any of my big fics or even their first chapters. If i have a plan/ a prompt or something in general i can orientate myself off of it flows super easily (all the microfics and Ant Pile) but coming up with something of my own is very hard and i often feel kinda bad about it too :,))

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

would love to, i have some smol things planned for mira mi amor that i will probably go and bother @appreciatedmoron bea about as well as my two irl bsfs since they’re quite good at spanish but besides that i’d only really trust myself with german since thats my first language

soulmate aus can be fun to play around with if you're doing interesting things with it <- the only way i like them fjdns. make it a little messy! complicated! i don't want it to be easy (this is me on my soapbox, not like @ you fjdjsjs)

ok HERE WE GO. thank you for the ask i am now going to proceed to Go.

so the easy bit: its gonna be haikyuu because the brainrot i have is literally incurable. now for everything after that. it gets a little more complicated. bc you are so right. if the soulmatism is easy then it's no fun! it's gotta be painful and messy for it to be interesting! what's the point of a world that's easy? (<- said by someone who keeps writing a concerning number of unrequited soulmate aus)

im gonna be honest, this is a little (a lot) inspired by a prompt i got in january 2022 (yikes sorry some of y'all are still waiting on a bunch of those) from @/what-the-flowers (once again im so sorry).

the parts of the prompt that i'm working with are (a) dreamsharing soulmates, (b) platonic soulmates, and (c) rare enough that 1/2 of the pair doesn't believe in them!! all of those ideas are SUPER exciting to me individually, but put them together......hehehhehehe

so the pairings im thinkin bout. i think it's gonna be hinata-centric because i've never really gone that route with a fic before and that feels unfair for a show literally about him. i think he starts sharing dreams with kageyama after he moves to brazil and then they have to navigate that change in their relationship when they're suddenly so far apart.

but the thing is that, like. they aren't in love with each other. they're besties, each other's greatest supporter and greatest rival, but they're not in love. i am forever a platonic kagehina truther. im not sorry for who i am. but anyways they've only ever heard stories about soulmates, and only ever been told that they're romantic.

and they don't really know how to navigate all of that, especially when neither of them are, like, the greatest at interpersonal emotional communication.

anyways! while this is happening i am shoving kenhina in there because i am currently shaking them around in my mind. it's kenma and hinata falling for each other but this whole soulmate thing is making things stupid complicated, and it doesn't need to, but it is, and it sucks.

oh and also kenma's bestie and no. 1 support system is obviously kuroo and as a side note, kuroo just straight up. does not believe in soulmates. i think i'm gonna force in a backstory about his parents there but it's probably gonna be not at all relevant, i just have a lot of thoughts about the kuroo family. anyways. this is ALSO making things complicated in some way that i haven't figured out yet.

but kenma doesn't have a soulmate, and he's falling in love with hinata, who suddenly has been given a soulmate years after kenma started being interested in him (maybe they were already established for a bit? not sure yet), and what does that mean for any of them?

i also have a side plot about oikawa and iwaoi and california and brazil. this is probably going to be a minor subplot used to push hinata towards being brave enough for an unconventional soulmate relationship and it may not really be necessary but i need 30,000 words out of this so it's going in there.

things i am most excited about:

kenhina !!! i've never written them but something about them is itching my brain rn and i want to try it !!!

hinata pov !!!! its so silly i've never done it and i want to give it a shot

dreamsharing!!!! i think i'm gonna play with , like, dreamscapes and the way dreams feel so liminal and unreal in addition to the way you can communicate with someone within dreams for realsies

world building !!! universes in which soulmates exist can be so crazy and i am going to make this one MESSY

subpoint to that: what are the implications of soulmates in the first place? what does it mean that they're so rare? and what does it mean to reject ur soulmate? what does it mean to have a platonic soulmate and someone else ur in love with? and what does it mean to be in love with someone who has a soulmate who isn't you?

things i am going to switch around/ideas i want to play with a little before i start writing in july:

hinata pov is very daunting. ngl. it is very daunting. and i may switch to a kenma pov bc that could also be super interesting (see: the last subpoint before this).

i want SO badly to write a kenma character study and i think this probably isn't the fic plot for that but WHAT IF IT WAS.

kageyama's role--i don't want him to just be there in dreams, so i want to figure out ways to work him into the physical world

how long does this last? -> i feel good abt starting at the beginning of hinata's brazil time, but i'm not sure how much time this needs to cover for it to make sense

there is so much to consider and i was on the fence abt this fic but now that i've written this all out i am getting EXCITED

The first character I first fell in love with: tanaka !! i don’t write for him and don’t talk about him much but i was riding the high of part 3 of jojo when i started hq so i latched onto the himbo

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: sakusa. i went from knowing nothing about him to him making my top three characters. damn. love you baby.

The character everyone else loves that I don’t: suna. i get it but like….eh.

YES I ABSOLUTELY CAN I HAVE NO JOKE READ HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF WORDS WORTH OF SAKUATSU FICS THESE PAST FEW WEEKS AND I SHOW NO SIGNS OF STOPPING OKAY LET'S GO

ATSU101: how to fall in love with your fake boyfriend by solyn - this was THE sakuatsu fic for me. i literally hadnt heard of the ship before and i didnt even like atsumu at the time lmaoo (now i think i kin him which is... mortifying). honestly i aspire to be as funny as this author. this fic just sucked me in and i read the whole thing so quickly. the fake-dating au we all wanted. it’s hilarious but also touching, and atsumu is so dense i almost screamed at my laptop but in the fun ‘reading a slowburn’ kind of way

finders keepers by solyn - after the above fic i checked out the rest of this author’s works and found this. god i love this fic so fucking much. it’s hilarious and heart-warming and insightful and it made me want to face the world again at a time when i might have preferred hiding away a little longer. sakusa is babysitting his sister’s kids and ALL of them run away from him while in the middle of tokyo, leading him and the Handsome Stranger Currently Witnessing His Mental Breakdown to go on an adventure around the city to find them all again, falling in love in the process. the cameos of the other haikyuu characters are also golden, particularly iwaoi bc i adore them. just. read it. you won’t regret it

play among the stars by buttonstuck - i read this in a single day when i was travelling the other week and i have NO regrets. i absolutely love sakusa's characterisation in this and while i love atsumu being an oblivious dork in fics, him being clever scratches a really specific itch in my brain and this fic did not disappoint. also even just the premise is so fucking genius? i know the author was very open that a lot of inspo was from the martian but i still couldn't have written this in a million years. they are stuck on the MOON together. and initially that made me unsure bc it sounded quite far-fetched but i am so glad i took a chance and read this

three sheets to the wind by fairycake - PIRATE AU!!! this was written so well it genuinely could have been a published book and i wouldn't have questioned it. the characterisation of EVERYONE is just done so well that it was totally immersive, especially kagehina's interactions genuinely felt canon. i also literally almost got emotional about the ending bc it's so much more than just a sakuatsu fic, it's also about finding your dream and learning to live for yourself and there's found family and UGH

insert coin to play by fairycake - same author as above and the fic im currently reading. it's still being updated which is exciting and when i tell you ive read almost all of it today alone holy shit i got SUCKED IN. i wouldn't normally have clicked on this just bc the tags looked like it was just honestly gonna be smut (which ive noticed is a trend with sakuatsu but whatever) but i trust this author after three sheets to the wind and they did NOT disappoint. i had no reason to worry about the tags bc im almost caught up and all they've done is kiss and threaten to kill each other, i genuinely think atsumu's presence just requires it's own onslaught of tags lmao. i think this might be my favourite sakuatsu fic so far? and im not even finished yet? the plot is just so well thought out that it could genuinely be a real book and i wouldn't question it, and there's moments of humour that have genuinely cracked me up and holy shit the characterisation. THE! CHARACTERISATION! their banter and the enemies to lovers and the tension is just *screams*. this is professional level writing. also the wholesome miya twin content. i just. 'if you're gonna die, die where i can find you' what if i started sobbing uncontrollably. I JUST REALISED I NEVER EVEN SAID WHAT THIS IS ABOUT it's such a cool premise this author never misses. it's a cyberpunk universe where omi and atsumu are bounty hunters! and they're each other's biggest rivals! but then they have to work together against a common enemy aRE YOU SEEING THIS SHIT-

burden of blame by deathbelle - this is another fic where the characterisation and enemies to lovers was just fucking nailed. like idk what it is about sakuatsu writers that just makes them hit the target EVERY FUCKING TIME but i want what they're having. give me enemies to lovers where they actually want each other dead and go from that all the way to being willing to burn the city down for each other. that's what burden of blame and insert coin to play do super super well. burden of blame is a really big one for the ship but if you haven't read it, it's a yakuza au where atsumu goes under the protection of the gang sakusa's in and they're forcefully partnered. the plot is so well thought out and there's a twist that literally made me pace my fucking room when i got to it. it's just so good and i ADORE both sakusa and the miya twins characterisations in this (im a sucker for wholesome miya twin content if you cant tell and this didn't disappoint)

clipped to you by littleboat - this is actually just a one-shot but it is fucking ADORABLE and i have been utterly obsessed with the 'sakusa wears hair clips' hc ever since. like just. the mental imagery. the mental imagery. atsumu never stood a chance

Anon thank you for requesting- I live for angst and this was super fun to write- even if I cried while doing so. IwaOi is my comfort ship but they’re not perfect. People make mistakes- in life, love, and everything and anything in between. Sometimes they repeat those mistakes, other times they learn from them, either way everything happens for a reason and sometimes it’s for the better. Unfortunately, not everyone winds up happy with the results- and that’s okay.

Also I kind of made it into a song fic (listen to Sign of the Times by Harry Styles while you read)!

Just stop your crying

Hajime and Toru were sitting in the second row on your side of the aisle, pretending that they couldn’t feel the sharp gazes from your family and friends. They had some nerve showing up to your wedding, despite being invited, especially after spending five or so years treating you like an outsider in your own relationship. The reception itself hadn’t yet started, Atsumu had just stepped onto stage- his twin right beside him as the best man.

It's a sign of the times

Atsumu was looking incredibly dapper in his midnight blue suit, his blonde hair combed perfectly to the side. He looked incredibly anxious, whispering to his brother if he looked alright. Hajime thought it was a stupid question- obviously he looked great- but then again he supposed he would have done the same, had he been in Atsumu’s shoes.

Welcome to the final show

Toru’s gaze flitted to the front row where your parents and close friends were sitting. Some were commenting on his and Hajime’s choice to attend the wedding still, but it was your mother’s words that surprised him.

“I’m glad it’s Atsumu (s)he’s marrying, he’ll treat them right.” That woman had been like his aunty since childhood, hearing her say that caused another crack in his heart.

Hope you're wearing your best clothes

His suit’s collar felt like it was strangling him, Hajime reached up to loosen it slightly. Despite doing so, he still found that he had trouble breathing.

You can't bribe the door on your way to the sky

The trainer wondered if he and Toru would go to hell for breaking your heart- only to mend it again with false promises, for telling you that they loved you when it had been lust the whole time.

You look pretty good down here

Maybe they were already damned to an eternity in hell.

But you ain't really good

They were good liars- him and Toru- maybe that’s why they were able to lie to you, to themselves, and to each other. Lied about their true feelings, convinced themselves it was lust and not love.

If we never learned, we been here before

It felt familiar, Toru thought, being here, like when he got invited to weddings in the past and he’d only bring Hajime as his plus one.

“You wouldn’t enjoy it Y/n- so I’ll just bring Haji okay? We’ll be back in no time- I promise!” The brunette had told you mournfully, as if they weren’t going to be staying in the Bahama’s for a week in order to attend a wedding. Now that he thinks about it, all the fees were covered- they totally could have brought you if they wanted.

He pretended he didn’t hear the hitch of your breath once his back was turned to you, not wanting to deal with your water works.

‘It’s fine,’ he had told himself, ‘(s)he’s just being dramatic.’ It’s not like it was the first time they’ve gone without Y/n after all.

Yes, it was a familiar sight. Sitting together side by side in a wedding venue, awaiting the arrival of the bride/groom. Yet, there was a stark difference this time. This wedding wasn’t for just some coworker or old friend, this was your wedding.

Someone squeezed his hand- it was Hajime- his normally piercing olive green eyes were cloudy with unshed tears. They hadn’t even laid eyes on you yet and the two of them were already ready to start sobbing. Semi Eita- who had been one of your close friends in high school- gave them a judgmental look.

It's a sign of the times

‘Why are you two crying? You had plenty of chances before now. Get over it.’ His fiery gaze told them, it was then directed elsewhere- since the music had started and the groomsmen and bridesmaids began streaming down the aisle. It was a little later than usual, apparently there had been an issue with the flower girl- so they had the wedding party wait a moment.

Others were tearing up all around them, but Hajime and Toru remained ignorant to them. The ring bearer- a little boy- they recognized him as your siblings youngest son, since they had accompanied you to see him be born. The kid was about six or seven now, and he was every bit as charming as you were.

It will be alright

He strode down the aisle proudly, chin raised in a way that reminded them of you. When you were feeling particularly stubborn or prideful, you would raise your chin just like that.

They told me that the end is near

Next up was the flower girl- or flower girls. Hajime didn’t recognize them whatsoever, they must have been around your nephews age. It was likely that they were from Atsumu’s side of the family. The girls scattered white rose petals down the aisle, it was a magical sight- watching them flutter to the ground.

We gotta get away from here

They had been expecting this moment, ever since they agreed to attend the wedding.

Just stop crying

To his right, he heard Toru stifle a sob.

Have the time of your life

It was you. Hajime couldn’t remember when he last saw that smile on your face. You were donned in white, smiling from ear to ear- hair done perfectly, eyes tearing up- but for a different reason from them. You were happy. Excited. Today was the day, not sparing them a glance, the only person who mattered to you was at the end of the aisle, waiting for you to join him.

Breaking through the atmosphere

Taking a step onto the raised platform, facing Atsumu, you let the tears fall. Unbeknownst to you, Toru and Hajime cried alongside you.

Things are pretty good from here

“Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of these witnesses, to join Miya Atsumu and L/n Y/n in matrimony commended to be honorable among all; and therefore is not to be entered into lightly but reverently, passionately, lovingly and solemnly. Into this - these two persons present now come to be joined. If any person can show just cause why they may not be joined together - let them speak now or forever hold their peace.”

Remember everything will be alright

Toru’s entire body tensed up. Hajime placed a firm hand on the setter’s thigh, preventing him from even considering objecting. Semi cast the two of them a evil look, promising violence should they dare to object.

We can meet again somewhere

"Miya Atsumu and L/n Y/n, if it is your desire to take the vows which will legally unite you at this time, please respond, 'It is,’.”

Somewhere far away from here

Atsumu and you continue staring lovingly at one another, not even hesitating a second before saying “It is.”

If we never learned, we been here before

“Do you, Miya Atsumu, take L/n Y/n to be your lawfully wedded wife/husband? From this day forward, to have and to hold, for better, for worse, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do you part?”

The entire audience held their breath in anticipation- as if there were any reason to doubt his love for Y/n. Even Toru and Hajime couldn’t find it within them to wish he declined. Y/n deserved a loving husband- even if it was just one person- so long as he would dedicate himself to her/him entirely.

“Course I do.”

Everyone’s gazes fell upon you.

You’re wiping your tears away, that wide smile- Hajime realizes that in all his years of knowing you he has never seen you this happy- never slipping from your face.

Toru’s never hated red as much as he does now. Not even when he was playing desperately against Japan during the Olympics.

“Atsumu, please take the ring you have selected for Y/n. As you place it on her/his finger, repeat after me: 'With this ring, I thee wed.’”

It’s a sign of the times

Your groom picks up your shining gold and diamond wedding ring/band and delicately slips it on your ring finger.

“Y/n, I’ve been enraptured by yer beauty since the first time I saw ya. Even before I fell for ya I’ve always admired how kind hearted and understandin’ ya were. There’s not enough words t’ capture or explain my love for ya. So I want to spend the rest of my life tryin. Yer it for me Y/n... so I can say without a second thought. With this ring, I thee wed.” He murmurs, salty tears spill from his eyes. He’s finally going to get the s/o of his dreams, he realizes.

Hajime and Toru hold onto each other with vice like grips. They realize it too. There’s no do overs.

Just stop your crying

“Y/n, please take the ring you have selected for Atsumu. As you place it on his finger, repeat after me: 'With this ring, I thee wed.’”

It will be alright

Your hand reaches for the single wedding band still resting on the pillow. It shines brilliantly between your fingers.

They told me that the end is near

“Atsumu, you’ve been there for me time and time again. You lifted me off the ground when I was broken, kissed my tears away from my eyes, and helped me learn how to love again. You’ve seen me at my best and my worst and loved me through it all. And it’s with complete faith and love that I say this. With this ring, I thee wed.” Atsumu’s wedding band matches yours, and slides on his finger perfectly.

We gotta get away from here

If we never learned, we been here before

The vows had been short but sweet. Toru would have been able to recite a whole paper- had he stood in Atsumu’s shoes.

“Seeing as the two of you have consented together in holy wedlock, and have witnessed the same before God and this company, by authority vested in me by the state, I now pronounce you husband and wife/husband. You may kiss your bride/groom!”

You yank Atsumu down and press a passionate kiss to his lips, throwing your arms around his neck to pull him closer. He reciprocates immediately- all tongue and open mouthed. Neither of you pay any mind to the fact that everyone is watching you make out. All you see is each other.

So, I was t h i n k i n g which, with my brain happens very often and I came up with a Kagehina balet au. Let it be known that I will probably never write this, because I have no idea how balet works, but the summary was approved by my friend @its-pronounced-quoassoint so here you go:

Kageyama is a pro balet dancer, he is damn DAMN good at what he does

Hinata, on the other hand, is very bad at it

Or so everyone thinks

Because in reality, he is just really bad at remembering choreographies because the child has ADHD and you expect him to look at a piece of paper where the steps are written and dance it perfectly? He is also a very lively person so he wants to add his own perks into the dances because he's legit bored if he's dancing to smth

But he is very good once you let him dance freely

And he is also very good at making choreogrphies, it's just that he is never able to write them down because he is dancing on instinct

And one day, after he fucks up another practice, he is staying in the studio late because he wants to dance for himself

Kageyama is also staying late too because c'mon, it's Kags and he like, tears his shoe or smth and needs to go to the seamstress workshop to get new ones and he sees Hinata dancing to himself and it's...beautiful

And Kageyama has seen him dance before, but only choreographies and he always seemed so bad with those

And so Kageyama stands in the doorway watching Hinata dance and then he comes up to him and asks him what the fuck was that

And that is how far I got, I just need balet Kagehina au and so this came to be

For the little details:

A little backround Tsukkiyama with Yama as a shy choreography creator and Tsukki as a techie and they have to talk to make sure tht Tsukki knows when and how to move the lights and when to draw curtains and also because Tsukki is a disaster gay boy and a tsundere and so he TELLS Yama they need to talk when in reality he just wants to talk to the cute choreography boy and Tsukki as Kags' friend and Yama as Hina's friend and all four of them screaming about their crushes

Yachi as a helping hand to the main seamstress Kiyoko and being totaly in love with her and Kiyoko used to be a dancer but then she got injured, not as bad that she can't dance, she just can't do it profesionaly and she loves balet and so she stays there as a seamstress

Suga as an instructor for smaller children in the balet school and Daichi, the instructor for Hinata's group of dancers is so in love with the silver haired guy that trains kids and he has no idea how to tell him and Suga being the one that actually aproaches him one day and asks if he would like to dance with him and afterwards he asks Daichi out because he saw the looksTM and yea

Ukai being the trainer of the profesional profesionals, Kageyama's group of dancers and being a disaster for Takeda, the guy without whom the balet studio would probably go bankrupt because he is the one who deals with sponsors and money and while he knows almost nothing about balet, he is still so passionate about the dancers and comes to all of their preformances and he even attends the pro practice and that makes Ukai incredibly flustered and one day, Takeda comes up to Ukai and congratulates him after one of the best preformances and he congratulates Ukai before any of the dancers and Ukai almost combusts and he kinda awkwardly asks him out

Okay, Iwaoi would be the second most important ship so here you go:

Oikawa is a pro dancer in the same group as Kageyama, but he is injured. Yes, the knee. And he can dance, it's actually pretty okay, but he can't do anything too tiring. I mean like, he can do pretty much anything, but Kags is Kags and he does some crazy shit like quadriple jumps and is just litteraly a stamina monster just like Hinata.

And Oikawa is S A L T Y because he wants to dance like that and while he's super good, he'll never be as good as Kageyama and it's just pissing him off.

Cue Iwaizumi, the worriedTM best friend who is coincidentaly also a dancer, but more around Hinata level. And he makes sure to attend his own practices and Oikawa's practices and make sure his best friend is not overworking himself and he's just extremely careful with Oikawa's health and makes him care for his own body and shit.

Iwaizumi is also madly in love with Oikawa, but he tries to hide it and care for him as a friend because he doesn't want him to hurt himself.

And Oikawa who's also in love with his best friend but thinks he's a burden to him and so he's scared to confess because he doesn't want to ruin Iwaizumi's life.

And one night they finish up some extra training and they sit down against the wall and Oikawa leans against Iwa and then he's just kinda 'fuck' and then he excuses himself, says he forgot his bottle somewhere and that Iwa should just go home and then he leaves into the storage and he has a breakdown about how he's a burden and how he'd ruin Iwa's life if he confessed and how Iwa would probably think he's disgusting and Iwa followed him there because his water bottle was right next to him and he sees him having a mental breakdown and he helps him through it and then tells him he's not a burden to him and that he's in love with him and he doesn't think he's disgusting for being in love with him and that he would love to go out with him

TL:DR- I came up with a Kagehina balet au but have probably made it into an Iwaoi hurt/comfort because I’m that good

thoughts: my absolute absolute absolute favorite iwaoi fic. the characterization, the fact that oikawa’s a bastard but because he and iwaizumi are older (late 20s i believe), it feels more realistic and sad rather than oikawa being a bitch for the sake of it. spoiler alert it’s slow burn and pining and mostly oikawa not realizing his feelings. this world building is pretty cool bc iwaizumi is the professional player while oikawa is an entomology professor! also i love non-linear narratives bc of This fic. there’s mutual pining in this fic but it’s really really really subtle to the point where you dont even know if oikawa likes iwa. this made me cry like twice.

sunset towns

Word count: 33k

Summary: In the summer of 2020, Oikawa Tooru returns home from his first successful stint as captain of Japan’s national volleyball team. In one hand, he holds the undisputed weight of an Olympic medal, and in the other, his unresolved feelings for a childhood best friend.

thoughts: the tone in this is So similar to the courtship ritual that I liken this as an alternate story even though it’s still oikawa’s pov. professional player oikawa and regular guy iwaizumi and oikawa is just. bumming around at iwaizumi’s place and naturally he messes up but things happen.

thoughts: this is also SO funny bc basically oikawa retires and moves in with iwaizumi and becomes his stay at home wife and a bunch of shit happens like people think that oikawa is dating ushijima and oikawa basically loses it every time. here’s one of my favorite quotes:

thoughts: so funny. so sososoosso genuinely funny. the tone is so snappy and iwaizumi honestly just sounds like a confused teenager (which he is in this) and it gets extra points for including a lot of american culture that a lot of the other iwaoi college au ones don’t include for like. obvious reasons lol.

Something Borrowed

Summary: In which Oikawa and Iwaizumi have always been a foregone conclusion to everyone else, but a massive, unanswered question to one another.

Headcanons

Yaku:

-Aware of the fact that his way of loving Lev is wrong

-He first tries to resist Lev, which is expressed by kicking Lev's ass and swearing loudly about his mistakes

-Spoiler Alarm: He will not last long! I mean, who could resist this cute 2-meter energy ball with those wonderful emerald green eyes and that adorable grin

-Yaku will most likely notice Lev staring at him, but will dismiss the possibility that Lev might feel the same. And in the same dark way than him

-Will not stalk Lev! Yaku would more likely have a small shrine in his room with stuff from Lev.

-writes fantasies of his and Lev's relationship (SFW and NSFW) in a diary that he always carries around with him

-Lev almost read it once, but Yaku stopped him just in time

-Since then he leaves the diary at home

-Yaku will rarely masturbate. Not because he doesn't feel the need to, but because it feels like cheating to him to do it without Lev.

-most likely thinks that he and Yaku are soul mates

-often imagines their future life, such as their wedding, honeymoon, how Yaku would become pregnant with his children, but also everyday situations

-other than Yaku, Lev will stalk!

-Because Lev is very clumsy, he has been caught stalking more often. Both from Yaku and the rest of the team.

-The only reason Yaku still doesn't know about Lev's feelings for him is because he is dense and the rest of the team finds the clumsiness of the two amusing and therefore doesn't intervene

-The only two on the team who suspect that Levs and Yaku's feelings for each other are not healthy are Kuroo and Kenma, but they don't intervene

-Kuroo wants to see the chaos and Kenma doesn't care, because he already knows that it would not end well for him or Kuroo if they interfere

-Lev has a very strong sex drive and will masturbate accordingly often

-other than yaku, he will not think that he is cheating on him, because the more he does, the more he wishes that yaku was there to help him with his problem.

-He will definitely kidnap Yaku! By the time Yaku graduates and neither of them has confessed to the other, Lev will run out of ideas, so he will simply knock Yaku out and take him to Lev's house.

-His parents are usually away on business, so he is home alone

-asking his sister for tips to confess to Yaku. She is also the only one who tells Lev about his obsession with his senpai, which is surprisingly little to her. As long as her little brother is happy, she doesn't care what it takes to keep him that way.

How they become a couple:

-Probably they end up together because Kuroo got bored and to bring some tension into the thing he tells Yaku that Lev is really stalking him because he thinks Yaku will freak out

-funnily enough the opposite is true: Yaku turns red like a tomato and starts to stutter, overwhelmed by the thought that Lev returns his feelings and even goes so far as to secretly protect him out of love on the way home.

-Lev watches the conversation with narrowed eyes from the other end of the gym. He is too far away to understand what Kuroo and his beloved Senpai are talking about, but what he sees makes him angry: his beloved is blushing! At this moment Lev assumes that Kuroo is flirting with his Senpai and already imagines the most painful and excruciating way of killing him.

-But what Lev sees afterwards shocks him even more: Yaku, still blushing, looks directly at him while he begins to smile gently and lovingly

-And Lev's heart stops then and there

-After the training, Yaku asks Lev to stay a little longer, whereupon they wait until everyone has left and they are the only ones in the gym

- There is silence for a few minutes before Yaku leans forward at the perfect 90 degree angle, squints his eyes and yells: "I LOVE YOU, LEV !!! PLEASE GO OUT WITH ME !!!"

-Lev just stands there in shock, before he realizes what his Senpai has just said and pulls him into a tight hug and replies with tears of joy: "I-I li-love you too, Ya-Yaku-san !!"

What happens after that:

-The two live happily together and isolate each other more and more from the outside world, which they don't mind because they just need each other.

-After Lev graduated, they got engaged and got married a year later. The only ones who attended the wedding were Lev's sister, Kuroo and Kenma.

Lev's and Yaku's parents weren't invited as they were homophobic and didn't accept the relationship between their sons. Kuroo was invited because he had helped bring the two together and Kenma was there as Kuroo's companion because the two are a couple

-The two lived a happy life afterwards and also had one or the other child.

So, this is the first time I've written something like this and it didn't get as yander-like as I wanted it to be, but I finally wanted to write something, especially since I think there are far too few fanfictions out there both parties are yandere for each other and that is a shame, since ships like Bokuaka, Kagehina, Ushioi or Iwaoi have a lot of potential there.

Hiiiii midnight it’s been a while! I’ve been pretty the air at school is pretty chill rn and I haven’t been as stressed as normal! Anyways I just finished reading the haikyuu manga and none of my irl friends are going to read it so I’m DYING to talk to someone about it while it’s still fresh on my mind (also I remember you saying you read the manga but if you didn’t don’t continue reading for spoilers!) well ANYWAYS the nekoma match took YEARS of my life let me tell you and the cage metaphors and tsukki and kuroo’s battle of the blockers it was probably one of my favorite matches. And KENMA at the end actually having fun ahahah I loved loved loved this match.

And then fukorodani’s match with akaashi was hard to read but the “we are the protagonists/stars of the world” made my bokuaka heart go places but akaashi just breaking was so surprising to see and the fact that they don’t even win nationals makes me sooo sad I wanted at least one team I knew to win nations also

AND THEN THE NEXT MATCH HINATAA the day that scene gets animated is the day I combust someone give HINATA a hug he just couldn’t play for w h a t and then they losttt and he was crying alone and coach ukai and takeda were absolute kings in this scene. Buuuuttt we did get to meet the tiny giant and I thkught he’d look real intimidating and scary but he actually seems pretty cool! AND THEN KAGAYAMA unpopular opinion I actually can’t STAND him sometimes he really went I win while hinata is really cryingg and I know it’s for plot but hsjajsjs

The time skip omggg okay yachi saying that date tech went to finals and the Miya twins beat karasuno actually made my heart really happy. I do wish when they were third years they could if won but getting third is also really incredible and YAMAGUCHI WAS CAPTAIN I really need the crew as their years fics. The beach part was so fun to read I loved meeting them new people and OIKAWA I never though hinata and oikawa would get to the point of being good friends but I loved seeing it

AND THEN RHE MATCH BETWEEN HINATA AND KAGEYAMA okay kags backstory was sad but the “one day you’ll okay with someone who is even better then you” and that someone being hinata he finally beat kagayama it makes me sooo happy. Also bokuto making everyone clap for him I love it AND THE NEXT PART WITH OIKAWA ahahshd I don’t even want to know the outcome of the match but I was sooo sad it ended (and is it weird that I want a spinoff with natsu hinata playing volleyball that would be so cool)

I don't know what's with Tumblr not giving me notifications (also I haven't checked it much) so I'm late at seeing this but I AM SOO HAPPY U READ THE MANGA BECAUSE WE CAN NOW SCREAM AT EACH OTHER! I actually read the manga then went back and rewatched the series and started rereading the manga till the end of nekoma match then a week of exams happened and I became antisocial.

Deep breath

Like I was so pumped up for the nekoma match when I realized that was not yet animated and reading the first few pages of the manga was hard cuz my dumbass brain didn't wanna read right to left and interpret instead went rushing through the panels ( hence the re read to savour the storyline and characters) . But once I got into it the match was soo good? Like Kenma really went I don't care you're my friend I'm gonna tear u from limb to limb and did so calmly? I agree with the cage metaphor when he broke through it I was so giddy and I remember Suguru ( Nohebi's captain) commenting how he didn't like Tsukki's vibes and realising that it was same as Kuroo's and hating them both :)

The Fukorodani's match fed my bokuaka heart and was a precursor to Bokuto's 'im a normal ace' part. The tiny giant was kind of a disappointment but that's life for you.. and the kamomedai match man the battle of the little giants - I was so rooting for Hinata but when he collapsed I didn't get it at first but then it hit me and takeda's talk about taking care of body being a part of volleyball and all made me cry. Also Kenma coming to check up on Hinata? Soft. Heart breaking. Cue waterworks.

Somewhere deep inside I always expected Karasuno to win the nationals but they lost and I wasn't even bothered by it at the end

So.. unpopular opinion I kind of don't like Kageyama? He is always being insensitive and a dick to Hinata and when says I'm going forwards or some shit when Hinata collapses really made me dislike him very much. I don't really think their dynamic is healthy so kagehina became a big no-no for me.

But post time skip I loved that they could settle it and work together as equals. But Brazil?! My god, little Hinata become so accomplished-Ninja Shoyou- and the bit abt Kenma sponsoring him, Oikawa meeting him and becoming friends, seeing all these great high school players in the same team- let me tell you Atsumo and Sakusa on the same team with their competitive vibes with Bokuto - man I laughed like crazy at the Bokuto Beam, its so dorky and utterly him- and Hinata was perfect. Is it weird I want spinoff of the MSBY jackals and their shenanigans? I loved how they showed every ones career and Tsukki still playing 🏐 after saying it's just a game - he must have been more hooked than he let on-

I agree a spin off with natsu playing 🏐 would be soo Cool - going all like but Onichan you can't come to my game then everyone will want your autograph and you'll embarrass me-

I wanted more but with the open ending I can now imagine anything and subsequently my haikyuu brainrot is spreading

I too don't have any irl friends who watch it and I resigned myself to being alone in this but man ranting is so satisfying isn't it?

My haikyuu phase doesn't seem to end soon but it's just that I can't get into the head space for ATLA and I feel so guilty for it, I have so many updates from fics I've subscribed and I can't muster any interest in checking them out.

On another note it's so funny in a show where the only confirmed couples seem to be Tanaka and Kiyoko yet I ship so many of them!? In my mind they are all gay and I ship them. My fav ships are probably- iwaoi, daisuga, BOKUAKA, kuroken, and weirdly enough I was kinda obsessed with sakuhina, atsuhina, oh and sakuatsu. I. Just. Think. They're. Neat.

Hey Anon, first of all, thanks for stopping by! I'm sorry it took me a while to reply, but I decided to listen to the song you listed for a couple days before doing anything. I wasn't really sure what you meant by reviewing the song, so I'm taking creative liberty with this ask, hope that's okay!

So the first thing I thought when I listened to this song was this song has a lot of potential for angst - the lyrics in the song really seem to push the fact that the singer is still in love with that person, even after all the bumpy ups and downs that they've been through, and even though it's been a while, they're still just as in love with that person since the day they first met.

So yeah, definitely a lot of potential for angst if a couple broke up but one of them is still in love and can't get rid of the butterflies.

However, I also thought that the song had a ton of potential to be one of those adorably cheesy songs where the singer is retelling their love story to the person they love, and how even after all they've been through, they are still there no matter what others think.

After the fourth time listening to the song, my mind sort of went back to Haikyuu and I realized this song really fit iwaoi - either way, angst or fluff, Iwaizumi could be singing to Oikawa about their love and how it's worth everything and how he is worth everything (I'm sorry I really love this ship) or (angst route) he can't seem to get rid of the butterflies even though it's been a while since they parted, and he's reminiscing about their past together.

And yeah I'm going the fluff route because I don't think I want to delve deep into angsty iwaoi right now - I'll probably save that for another time xD

Right off the bat, this already screams iwaoi because- they're childhood friends, and they've been around each other/friends since they were kids. Iwaizumi is always there to help Oikawa when he needs it, whether it's by headbutting him when he needs it or giving him a hand to help him up (in iwaoi's case this song is 100% in Iwaizumi's POV and you can't change my mind)

They've really been through a lot over the years, what with losing against Shiratorizawa back in middle school, Oikawa getting slowly replaced by Kageyama, and then losing to Karasuno in their last year of high school, but they've been through it together, and they are there to support each other.

And even after all that time, all those years spent together, Iwaizumi is still just as in love with Oikawa as he was the first time they met, and that love is constant - it hasn't and it won't ever change over the twisty course of time.

Even when Oikawa is at his worst, like when he nearly slapped Kageyama and Iwaizumi had to get in there and snap him back into reality, or when neither of them are at their best, like right after their loss against Karasuno, they're still there supporting and helping each other, always. Honestly, sometimes their relationship doesn't really make sense - they're really different from each other, Oikawa being high maintenance and Iwaizumi being the one who helps ground him and bring him back to earth, but those characteristics complement each other and it's what makes them fit together, and no matter what others think, Iwaizumi never has to even question their relationship.

When Iwaizumi finally confessed that he loved him, when he admitted those words out loud, they confirmed what Oikawa felt inside of him, and the weight of all his concerns ("What if he doesn't love me the way I love him?") fell off of his shoulders as they sang along to the start of forever, knowing that they both loved each other in the same way.

But the idea that on one hand you’ve got kagehina are so platonic and start dreamsharing when kenhina have sort of been running to this thing between them, it’s so good. so like im thinking about established kenhina break up/make up with platonic kagehina. and like kagehina r like well . we're soulmates ig. and so kenhina break up, until eventually everyone's like hey you guys, like, are not happy???? you know that it's an option to just, yk, not date???? and kagehina are like woah . anyways. back to the kenhina then <3

but yeah ok re: kuroo, i made some changes to his plotline because im insane about him. which is to say that i had a dream about this scene and then had to write it down and now it's out of my control and i'm attached to it.

so basically kuroo became the guy explaining all the worldbuilding lore via a conversation with kenma about the science of soulmates. so kuroo believes in them but in the sense that he dreams of kenma and kenma does not dream of him </3 and i am going to have FUN with that bullshit*

(*please note that there will be no unrequited kuroken. kuroo is just vibing. this is part of why he knows platonic soulmates are okay and allowed and encouraged. there WILL be kurodai. one day i WILL get my bingo on the list of kuroo ships.)

anyways so we've got that going on in kenma world. then in hinata world i'm figuring out someone who is encouraging him w the platonic soulmate stuff. part of me wants oikawa because i love oikawa and then another part of me is like. lol. oikawa believes in soulmates b/c he has one so.

then the other part of me is like. well i can make this a saga. hinata goes to brazil and kenhina date. break up in brazil. hinata goes back to japan and is with kageyama. and then like. maybe its atsumu or bokuto who guides him to soulmate actualization or whatever? ooooh ok fun idea would be atsumu who is (VERY VERY SO MUCH platonic) soulmates w osamu, and who is , like, absolutely disgusted at the idea that soulmates "should" be romantic. and this is , like, a come to jesus moment for hinata, yk? just because he's never had anyone tell him that platonic soulmates were an option before .

anyways yeah so those are my new thoughts. i still want kuroo to be, like you said, encouraging kenma in the way that he's like, what you feel matters more than what you dream, the universe can tell you who your soulmate is but it can't tell you who you love. yk, like what hinata chooses when he's awake is so much more important than what he thinks of when he sleeps.

and i want smth similar for hinata but also not the same message repeated in the same way--hence maybe atsumu? bokuto could be interesting and would further my bokuto & hinata friendship agenda. we'll see !! i haven't NEARLY gotten that far yet.

who is oikawa tooru?

i guess that’s a weird way to start off a post, considering just how popular oikawa is in this fandom. i’m absolutely certain that he’s still one of the most popular characters if i can take the #oikawasear trend on twitter a couple of weeks ago seriously. (i will be mourning that iwaoi is no longer the top ship in this fandom. it’s devastating to me on a personal level). and i can’t say that i’m any different, either, otherwise i wouldn’t have made this blog or this post. but i guess the reason i’ve been itching to write this is because i’ve been in this fandom--and more specifically, a fan of oikawa--for about four or five years now. i devour the content available, and i can assure you that i’ve read too many of the fanfictions on ao3 to be healthy, and never before have i seen a character whose characterization is so hotly disputed.

and i get it. he’s a complex person. he’s kind of awkward in that there is a very clear disconnect between his outward personality and who he is alone. it’s a very hard balance to strike, especially when you consider just how much conjecture goes on in his characterization among fans and in discourse. he’s really easy to project and certain traits, correct or otherwise, are amplified based off how authors perceive him. there’s plenty of presumptions that can be made based on his on-screen actions/thoughts/beliefs that can be taken to some very logical conclusions.

but i’ve also seen people write him in ways that don’t strike me as particularly truthful. he’s type casted into stereotypes that don’t do him justice, or made into something that is vaguely like oikawa, but not quite. in the following post, i’ll be trying to dispel misunderstandings of his character, if only for my own sanity.

tl;dr i think that oikawa is chronically one of the most misrepresented characters in fandom and i want to fix that

exclaimer: i am solely an anime-watcher; i have seen snippets of the manga and therefore have a general idea of what is going on.

let’s establish some very very basic stuff. just to keep it simple, i’m not going to talk about anything beyond what has been published via the anime (as of season four).

Oikawa Tooru | 及川徹

gender: male

height: 184.3 cm

occupation: high school 3rd year, class 6

position/number: setter, 1 (captain)

here’s something that’s never pointed out: oikawa is in class 6 which, if we go off the trend of every other school in haikyuu!!, means that he is in a college preparatory class aka he’s pretty dang smart. it’s not confirmed or anything, but it a. follows the trend of every other class 6 student and b. is the highest class available among seijoh 3rd years (classes 5, 3, and 1). don’t get the idea that he’s dumb or unintelligent, or even that his strengths only lie in the classroom because that would be a gross understatement of his skills.

anywho.

generally speaking, i like to start with the building blocks of his personality because there’s so much room for assumptions. here are the things that i think make up his core personality:

intelligence/knowledgeable: not only academically speaking, but he’s also well-versed in people. he knows how to play them--what will make someone more confident, more doubtful, what will help his teammates succeed. clearly, oikawa is very knowledgeable in human thought patterns. or he’s dedicated a lot of time to knowing them.

loyalty: of all of oikawa’s traits, i think this one gets talked about the least, but we know it to be true. we make jokes about “you should have come to shiratorizawa” but it really shows you exactly how loyal, how much trust, oikawa has in this team that he has spent three years shaping. he never stops believing in the work that he has put in, and especially the hard work that his teammates have put into their volleyball.

hardworking: one of the most well-known things about oikawa. most fans already know that his white knee pad is actually a knee brace. ‘nuff said. i salute you, good sir.

insecurity: oikawa’s insecurities are perhaps his most notable trait. in a sense, he’s sort of the underdog--so good, but never quite good enough to accomplish what he’s set out to do. and we know that he’s struggled with his doubts since junior high, literally since he was 12 or 13, and that’s informed all of his character from the moment he ran into ushijima. oikawa is someone who is defined by his insecurities.

oikawa is a lot of things. he’s introduced as someone who is very flamboyant--he’s built up by kageyama as the best setter, his senpai literally and figuratively, his initial shots are all of smug smiles and easy, unfaltering swagger in the face of this new team. even his theme, all rambunctious brass and jazzy, is meant to be all in your face, here’s the big boss! he’s someone who is petty and silly and seems to favor shallow conversation. but he’s oikawa, so there’s a surprising amount of depth in the little time that we have with him. there’s a reason that, in any other franchise, he’d probably be the protagonist.

he is someone full of contradictions. he’s childish and he spends time with a bunch of girls and is very clearly someone who likes to project a certain image of himself to the public (see: his cute lil’ humming run after his yell in s4e23 to make him seem kind of normal). but he’s also spent a lot of time with himself. in fact, if we take the few scenes we have of him alone and his bedroom (bare, spartan, meticulous) into account, oikawa actually is much more solemn and/or serious than the image he projects. he’s comfortable in the silences between all the white noise. he’s alright just being with iwaizumi. he allows himself to dwell on the past and his shortcomings, while also looking forward to the future. his ambition and passion to improve drive him, but his past failures weigh him down. they haunt him.

personally, i think that he’s naturally a pretty silly guy when given the chance. it’s not just for show. iwaizumi would even corroborate this à la oikawa’s introduction speech in s1. he likes having fun when he can with his friends. if we assume that oikawa is most himself with iwaizumi, then we definitely know that’s the case (see: “are you my mom, iwa-chan?”), and there’s nothing wrong with that. but i think that the most basic traits of his character, combined with his experiences in volleyball, have pushed him to be this person who is mired in doubt. it’s forced him to go down a path where something that he once loved for the fun of it has now become the source of his ire. it’s really just that simple. maybe in another life, things would be different and oikawa wouldn’t have to struggle as much. but that’s really just a part of the human experience, isn’t it? and, in all honesty, would we really love oikawa as much without all his vices?

and maybe this is getting into speculation, but i don’t think it’s a difficult argument to make that oikawa is really mature. he’s introspective. i say introspective because the revelations that he’s had in regards to his own strengths and weaknesses--those are things he’s had to confront and deal with since he was in junior high (starts at 12 years of age). it takes someone with a lot of maturity and self-awareness to realize those kinds of things about himself.

and he’s stronger than he gets credit for. most people depict him as a crybaby, but he’s really not. he doesn’t cry or give up in the face of ushijima or kageyama’s unfettered growth and successes, he doesn’t cry when faced with defeat. oikawa is there to support iwaizumi in his own doubt as ace, and lend support to his teammates. and oikawa doesn’t get stuck on the what-ifs or has-beens. driven by his infamous ambition, he looks forward to the future.

it’s kind of a double-edged sword. it’s pushed him this far--he’s put in this much effort to be one of the best in the prefecture--because of his competitive spirit, but it’s also something that has caused him serious injury. oikawa’s motto (”if you’re gonna to hit it, hit it until it breaks!”) is the very epitome of this mentality. it’s a message to work hard to finish what you started, but i also think that you could interpret that hard work breaking you, too. he’s steadfast—obsessive, really—to the point that oikawa will let his passions break him before he would ever give up. it’s the point of all the strife in his life, because he would never have the problems he does if he were even a little less enamored by this sport.

and you really have to wonder where he would be without ushijima and kageyama as his obstacles. his drive will always be there, that is an intrinsic part of him, as are the standards to which he holds himself, but you really have to wonder just how good oikawa would be if he didn’t have such direct competitors. this is an incredibly important question to ask about kageyama and oikawa in particular. yes, oikawa does loathe ushijima: for his disregard for oikawa’s decisions, for his disregard of oikawa’s loyalty, for his flippant attitude of seijoh, who oikawa has poured his blood and sweat into creating. but ushijima is an opposite hitter. oikawa is a setter. those are two very different positions with little crossover. but with kageyama--that is a clear rivalry. they push each other to be better, made all the more potent by their differences as players; one setter’s growth as a player directly impacts how the other performs in each subsequent game. seijoh’s defeat by karasuno in season 2 just feeds into oikawa’s drive for the future. he has not intention of giving up. a light was lit under him, pushing him forward, to do better, to be better.

this is something that has been pointed out in a different analysis (linked below) but, narratively speaking, oikawa is kageyama’s foil. their interactions inform their characters and are a major cause of tension in their development. their relationship is really the most complex in the story that i have noticed, and is something that has not been appreciated enough. the iwaizumi-oikawa thing has been expounded and studied in every facet possible (i love the alexander the great/hephaestion allusions), but it’s true that kageyama has impacted oikawa the most. they begrudgingly respect each other’s talents, what it is that they bring to the court, while also envying what the other has in spades that they do not. in oikawa’s case, his strength clearly lies in his interpersonal relationships--his ability to intuit exactly what his teammates need to be at their best. kags is just a fount of overwhelming technical skill who has a really hard time getting to know those around him. living up to the standards that oikawa places on himself, in tandem with kageyama threatening his position as setter, leave oikawa floundering, fearing his own incompetence against opponents who are naturally much better than he. so he’s left with the knowledge that maybe his best isn’t good enough, but he still continues on anyway. he pushes himself past a seemingly unreachable threshold just to go toe-to-toe with this monster. it’s the purpose of his character--to tell this story of the ordinary v. the extraordinary--and it is perhaps the most relatable arc that a story like haikyuu!! can tell.

their connection naturally causes oikawa to seek out help, seen in the flashback scenes where he is talking to an unspecified coach/adult. that coach’s words then become the creed upon which oikawa plays, maybe even more than what iwaizumi has taught him, and is the final push that completes oikawa’s character arc in s2ep24. that change in mindset allows oikawa to see kageyama’s unbridled talent not as an obstacle but as a challenge. it’s very nuanced, but it makes all the difference. it’s why, following seijoh’s defeat, oikawa has the audacity to declare to kageyama and ushijima his plans for the future. in a sense, karasuno and kageyama and ushijima have won the battle but not the war. it’s the tipping point in his story and, more than anything, what makes oikawa so compelling. we have seen what has led up to the change, but now we want to know what he’s going to do to meet that challenge. what will he be doing beyond the story when he is no longer relevant to the narrative? we don’t know the details at this point, but we know that oikawa’s love and ambition for volleyball have been reaffirmed in this moment.

but to bring it back, the kags-oiks connection also makes us question what it is we are watching, makes us as the audience think: what qualifies someone as a genius? are there any limitations to what that genius can do? what can ordinary people do in the face of those geniuses?

these are questions that exist beyond the reality of sports and transverse into other disciplines. for me, those are very real questions that i have had to ask myself as a musician. i have dedicated nine, almost 10, years to my practice but there are still 10-year-olds who are just better at it than i ever will be. part of it is time and practice to be sure, but some of it is just innate. and i think the more appropriate version of those questions would be this: what qualifies someone as a prodigy? are there limitations for prodigies? what can we do in the face of prodigies?

oikawa is a genius player--he knows the ins-and-outs of his sport better than anyone, and he can accomplish great feats that others in his same position can’t. but even with all that veritable experience and skill, he is ultimately still overtaken by a prodigy whose talents seem endless. it’s why he can hate ushijima but fear kageyama. one is something he can actively fight against, the other is inevitable.

and really, i think that’s the beauty of oikawa tooru, why he’s so beloved by the fandom, even years after he has stopped being relevant to the narrative. beyond the fluff and goofiness and hijinks, there’s someone there who is really, truly, human.

an aside with much less significance/why do people think this??

so here’s one thing: even though oikawa has fangirls, i wonder what he actually thinks of them. for one, it’s only natural for anyone to be super flattered if people think you’re hot stuff. that’s just... i don’t think he’s weird if he pays attention to them. but i think that people are conflating his being kind to them to being genuinely egotistical due to the attention. actually, i think these are opposing ideas and a contradiction of who oikawa is. when you’re an arrogant person, you think that you deserve all the attention you’re getting and you’re not going to bother with the people who worship you.

but that’s not at all what oikawa does. he’s rather kind to his fans. i would never say that he’s self-effacing, but knowing what you’re worth is different from being pompous. and think about it. it’d be a real jerk move for oikawa to not say nice things to them and thank his fangirls when they spend time, energy, and effort to make him food and see his games. he would just be a genuinely awful person if he didn’t at least give them thanks. it’d be more alarming if he didn’t talk to them, at least in my opinion. more than anything, we should consider this: why is it that oikawa has the fan club and not anyone else on the seijoh team? i’m sure a part of it is because he’s attractive and the captain of a team, but i think it’s more than that, too. we see these interactions from other perspectives, but i think that reflects more on those around oikawa than oikawa himself if they don’t understand why he acts the way he does with those girls.

another thing: i don’t think that anyone can question that oikawa is very pretty, or handsome, or whatever descriptor you would like. it’s prevalent in fandom (see: pretty setters squad), but he is also the only person in canon to be acknowledged by other characters as being particularly good-looking. maybe the miyas count at this point? i’m not sure. but i don’t really understand where people get the idea that he is particularly focused on his appearance, though. there is literally no indication of that from the material that i have seen. and maybe he uses that to his advantage with his fangirls, but i highly doubt that, in all honesty. i think that it’s fun to imagine him being into these things as a hobby, but it irks me greatly when i see that people spend time saying that oikawa wakes up extra early just to fix his hair or slather on foundation/concealer just to look presentable.

he’s a teenaged boy who clearly has other things that worry him, he’s a full-time student, and volunteers to coach at lil tykes volleyball classroom in his free time. he wouldn’t have time to spend on his hair or makeup. and we even seen in the hanger tooru special that he even wakes up looking like that.

he is au naturale, my friends. and we even know how little he gives thought to his own body, if you take into account his knee brace. for oikawa, his body is merely the medium through which he can accomplish his goals. we even have evidence of this when we see oikawa up all night studying karasuno game play or via his knee brace. he doesn’t know how to stop or understand when enough is enough. he breaks himself if there’s no one to watch him.

also, just... how would makeup work, logistically speaking? i don’t wear makeup, but i’m thinking that foundation and concealer and hair product would be, um, really bad. like, it’d run down his face and stuff. also, it’d probably get into his eyes, too? seriously. i’m not against oikawa wearing makeup in the slightest cause he’d be even prettier, but we know that oikawa would absolutely not jeopardize his chances in any way.

IM ON A BREAK SO LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT IT at least my version of it. Many authors who write for Omegaverse have different styles of writing it and often will make it more complex or simple, depending.

A/B/O (Omegaverse) dynamics under the cut because uh... this is gonna be long

So first off, we have the rankings:

Alpha, which are the top of food chain, theoretically speaking, and are able to impregnate anyone. “But what about females?” Yes! Female alphas have a penis, like male alphas. Now, some authors will change it up. I’ve read some where the female alpha will still have the normal female genitalia, but has a penis that can pop out of the vagina? It was weird explanation, but that’s the gist. I’ve also read it where the female alpha is born with male genitalia, so only a penis. They could also have both, it is really up to the author’s wishes. Alphas have cycles of prime breeding which is referred to as a rut.

Betas are considered the normal class, they’re the middle men. Betas do not have cycles but they do have a scent. Male betas can get female betas and omegas pregnant, and alphas and male betas can get female betas pregnant. This means female betas go through their normal menustration cycles.

Omegas are the last class rank. They are the baby makers and can get pregnant regardless of their gender. So, male omegas. They also have a prime breeding cycle which is referred to as a heat (which is very similar, in my opinion, to a normal female’s estrus period). The equivalent for this in female betas is ovulation. Now, omegas can have babies, but how do you do that if you’re male? Well, some male omegas will have female genitalia, or they go through a c-section. Some authors write it with the baby coming out of the butt. It’s weird, but it’s creative expression, no strict laws of Omegaverse. Some male omegas will have the normal male genitalia, the penis and ballsack. These are useless, however.

Now, I headcanon that there is an extra level to both omegas and alphas. Some people have the abo dynamics interacting to create alpha/beta genes or beta/alpha genes (yes, there’s a difference). I add a level to alphas, so they’re a cut above the rest. This would include, but not be limited to, Enji Todoroki (BNHA), Iwaizumi Hajime (HQ!!), and Bokuto Kōtarō (HQ!!). These alphas above alphas would be deemed “Apex Alphas”. I have seen this term used before, I just can’t remember which blog I follow (or followed) used it, so please let me know if anyone knows where the term was coined; same with the omegas. An omegas extra level is a “Fecund Omega”, and these are highly submissive, housewife-esque omegas. These can include, do not come at me for this, Yachi Hitoka (HQ!!), Rei Todoroki (BNHA), and Oikawa Goshiki Tsutomu (HQ!!). Why them? Because I feel like they just are. Of course, they can be whatever you headcanon them as. Jesus fuck i hc Oikawa As a bottom and an omega but I know a lot of people don’t see that so it’s personal opinion.

If you’ve gotten this far, you’re probably still caught on that whole “scent” thing. If you’re not, that’s okay. You’re still gonna read this. Scents are distinguishing smells that each alpha, beta, and omega carry. An alpha’s pheromones are stronger and overpower an omega’s and beta’s. Betas, while they have scents, cannot actually smell the distinguishing scent (See BokuAka: Threesome, Kinktober day 13 for an example). Omegas have scents which are often more feminine, usually referred to as being “sweet” or “floral”. There is nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t mean an omegas scent has to be feminine. An alpha’s/omega’s scent increases and gets heavier with their rut/heat cycle. Fan fictions set in school setting are usually introducing a set of guidelines for this: either the alpha/omega is forced to stay home during their cycle, or some kind of suppressors are put in place. I’ve seen medicine used, scent-blocking collars, as well as a “special perfume/cologne” (it was only in one fic and it was on Wattpad, so not common).

Alphas and omegas also tend to fall to their instincts more often than not. It isn’t a common theme, but I feel like it would fit properly. Maybe if an apex alpha gets a whiff of an omega about to enter a heat cycle, that alpha will then become obsessed with that omega, perhaps even howling (the idea of Bokuto howling at a Reader who accidentally entered a heat cycle gets me hot dont @ me).

Onto intercourse aka sex! So, alphas have what is called a knot. It is used to plug up their mate (which is their s/o) full of their cum, yummy! Jk The knot itself will inflate as the session goes on, and is quite painful for the receiving partner. Due to this, some authors will write it so a knot is only used during a rut or heat cycle. I do them regardless because, well, I like it. Also, alphas will be adamant about not being submissive or on the receiving end due to instincts, and vice versa for omegas. Their instincts come first when it comes to their cycles, definitely, but in general as well. Knotting also faces a problem, aside from the stretch: the inflation lock. The knot acts as a plug, yes? So, the alpha has to wait for their knot to deflate before detaching themselves from their partner. This can take a few moments, until the alpha has expended their seed and possibly until both parties breathe normally. I’ve also seen it where this can last up to 30 minutes, so get comfortable!

There is another aspect of sex with alphas, but is not necessarily only with sex (it will commonly be seen during intercourse, however). That is marking. I don’t mean writing a name on skin with a marker or branding their name into skin (even tho that’s hot), no. Biting down hard enough to draw blood, therefore leaving a mark? Yes. This lays claim to an omega or beta by an alpha and is a signal of a lasting relationship. Here’s where authors differ: how long the mark lasts. Some have the marks last forever, some only a week, some a month, some for years. It depends. When a mark starts to fade, it requires the alpha to once again claim their mate. This can also lead into angst material, as I’ve read one fic where the alpha marked an unmated omega and essentially ruined their life. Or, on a different note, having a mark that will last for months and having their mate die and soon, their mark fades too. Now, both omegas and alphas can mark their mates, it’s more commonly seen with alphas, though. Betas are not seen to mark their partners, but can be marked by an alpha or omega.

I briefly mentioned scenting, which is different from scents. Let me explain. Scents are what an individual has that is their distinguishable smell. This can vary from person to person, author to author. For example, I headcanon that Akaashi (HQ!!), regardless of rank, has a distinct spearmint and/or coffee smell, which is actually quite common for him. On the other side, I headcanon someone like Bokuto to smell like a pine forest, maybe even sandalwood? Something rustic, but other authors may see him smelling like a beach or even like smoke, due to his love of barbeque. The scents are completely versatile and can come from their hobbies, interests, or favorite food. For example, Sugawara’s scent could be spicy, like maybe it has a hint of Tabasco sauce or Buffalo sauce. Another indicator of scents, if they don’t have specific interests or a favorite food (looking at you, Osamu 👁👁), their scent can somehow relate to their personality. Like in the Suga headcanons, his omega had a spicy scent because of their chaotic, feral energy. Osamu would probably smell like a recently extinguished fire, or the air before a storm. Calm, quiet, but a warning. Scents get heavier with heats and ruts, of course, but they can also be amplified due to emotions. This is often seen in fics where an omega is upset and their alpha can tell and comfort them. Or, if you’re into angst, the beta cannot properly be there for their alpha/omega because they cannot smell their scent. (Yeah I went over this twice but it’s an important aspect of Omegaverse)

Scenting is different because, well, it’s a verb first off. So, an action. Scenting is usually what mates do to mark a claim. So, scents come from scent glands (I usually put them on the neck, as do other authors). Scenting is the action of rubbing their scent onto their mate/partner. Like I said previously, alpha’s scents overpower others, so if an alpha scents an omega, their scent could stay on the entire day. An omega’s scent doesn’t hold very long, but it’s faintly there. A beta cannot, in my little world, carry another’s scent. They have their own scents, but cannot be scented or be scenting anyone.

I think that’s everything lmao. Like I said, every author differs so this is basically my system of Omegaverse. A lot of people think Omegaverse is weird or just complicated and strange, but I see it as a way to explore, kind of? Like, if I wanna make this one character go absolutely feral, I make them an alpha or omega (see Kinktober piece, day 13, again lmao). There’s a lot of freedom when it comes down to it, since their is no strict rule or law about how it is to be written or produced. Not only that, it’s an AU that can be added onto anything, since it only really affects the genitalia and who can get pregnant, yknow? It’s also good as a society set up for gay ships, like BokuAka or IwaOi, having Akaashi and Oikawa being omegas while Bokuto and Iwaizumi are alphas. This is because same sex couples are still frowned upon in most countries, especially America (the south) and Japan. It also gives these gay ships a chance to have their own little offsprings together, which is downright adorable. I personally enjoy writing Omegaverse more than regular stuff because it adds an extra element to work with and don’t get me started on the whole predator-prey dynamic. Delicious 💦
