Turns out your origin pops up more than once later in the game but there’s no prompt, so you’ll only notice it on your second very different character. Another odd choice but so far it is what it is.

And OC lore dump time: Does Isabella has a main psyker specialty? And what origin world did you went with? Triumph/darkest hour? Is she young or not really?

Tbh when I was creating her I didn't expect to develop her and picked options for stats, and then had to explain to myself how this all made sense xD also my knowledge of lore is very limited, so I mostly go with 'The Imperium is big, all sorts of exceptions could happen'

Game-terms Isabella is a telepath, voidborn, sanctioning gone wrong // saved a ship from warp breach, officer and master tactician by archetypes

Story-terms, I made her a citizen of the world. A daughter of a hive-citizen psyker, she was born in the void, yes, but spent her early years in a special 'Schola' on the Imperium world whose focus was to study and control psykers manifestation and ability level. Her manifestation went fine, but sanctioning was horrible and locked Iza out of the biggest part of her potential (I needed to explain why we started with psy-level ZERO).

She was still useful enough not to get discarded, even tho she couldn't produce a single attack with her abilities. She was trained as a telepath and got her first assignment to the Imperial fleet as a tool for a fleet Commissar to keep an eye on people's morals (read: she was just walking mental wire, looking for any traces of disloyalty).

Her second assignment put her under a capitain who was so good she could afford to be quite eccentric. One of her quirks was avoiding using psykers unless they were absolutely necessary, like astropaths, so Isabella found herself getting an assignment to a NORMAL position and spent years in the ship's intendant service until the day she was checking missing supplies onboard a pilgrim ship they escorted and spotted a cargo which got psycho-active as they entered warp...

So yes, Isabella just took as many origins as she could, but this got pretty useful in her new career. She avoids using her abilities because of sanctioning trauma, but they - and years spent among people - made her good officer material (she actually started to climb the ranks right before she was taken on vV ship and wasn't happy about this new assignment)

She is around 34 at the start of the game events, which is compared to, say, Abelard, is a baby xDD

Saru ga saru (去る) - lit. Saru is leaving/going away. A joke on Saru’s name and the verb sounding the same. Hence I made it Saru’s on the run, with Saru thrown in at the front.

Terra-san iza terasan (照らさん) - I believe this is something along the lines of いざ行かん… which would make it lit. “Terra-san let’s shine!” Due it being more complex, I made it Terra is extraterrestrial, but with Terra mixed in.

Totally Unrelated to My Theme:

I doubt this will happen, but just in case:  IF anyone comes here after seeing Pocky’s AMAZING drawing of a couple from my Stray game Fanfic [Blazer & Iza], and are curious to know what story they are from, well this will give you the link for the story.

Brainstorming ideas for how the V3 cast gets stuck in a hole

This script I wrote is making me think of ideas for how the V3 cast would get stuck in a hole.

The hole in question appears out of nowhere. It's just THERE one morning.

Himiko is the first to fall in.

Miu makes some contraption/gets an idea to get Himiko out, and maybe rallies some other characters to assist (Kibo is most likely one of them).

The contraption/idea doesn't work, and somehow causes Miu, plus everyone who helped her, to get stuck in the hole.

If Tenko's alive, she definitely attempts to get Himiko out of the hole, but probably falls in as a result.

Shuichi, Kokichi and Kaito are the last three to fall in.

Shuichi stands at the edge of the hole, looking at everyone who fell in, and is overcome with a sense of dread.

Kokichi then approaches him from behind and gives Shuichi a light shove as a jest.

However, the shove catches Shuichi off guard. He looses his balance, and in a panic, grabs onto the nearest thing.

Which just so happens to be Kokichi Ouma.

They both fall in. (Maybe Kokichi happens to land on top of Shuichi).

Kaito is uh, not happy that he just let his sidekick get shoved into a hole. (It's not your fault Kaito)

Kaito tries to rescue Shuichi from the hole, only to fall in himself.

Gonta and Maki avoid falling into the hole.

(After thinking over it, I'm led to believe that it would be really really hard to get Maki to fall into the hole.)

Gonta tries to get everyone out of the hole, but is unsuccessful for one reason or another.

Finally, Maki comes up with a plan, and gets Kaito and Shuichi out of the hole (maybe Gonta helps her!).

Kaito, Shuichi, and Maki then get a ladder and lower it into the hole, and that's how everyone else gets out of the hole.

If anyone has any more suggestions/ideas for this scenario, feel free to share them! I’d love to hear!

According to article published by Capricho.com, Ludmilla, Brazilian funk singer has hit the record on September 2nd 2020 on music stream plataform Spotify. 

On her Instagram, comemorating the hitmark, she posted that (translated from Portuguese):” I’ve never imagined this. I’m so happy. There’s a movie playing on my head with all that happenned in my life. There were no instructions, no manual, I had nobody to guide me, on how I would to be strong and brave... And that one day it would work out. I had no one. I was persistent and very blessed by God. And there I’m, at shock. I’m trying to digest this hitmark and have this wonderful day. It seems I’m living a dream”.

She also has a playlist with songs by black brazilians on the rise, curated by her: “Nossas Descobertas”. 

Besides her music, she oftens talks about the discrimination she faced all her life as black and bisexual woman (who’s now married to Brunna Gonçalves, whom is featured in some of her MV’s).

Obs: always rememeber; LATINIDADE (a.k.a “being latine/latinx”) does not imply race, it’s a cultural trait - Latin America is a diverse region with people of many origins, many different countries (diverse like the U.S, like South Africa, like Australia etc). 58. What Would You Place In Your Secret Chamber Behind The Mirror?

Aside from the head of my sworn enemy/once friend/once lover to gently gaze at and talk to when I’m feeling down? SECRET CULTIVATION TECHNIQUES but it actually pertains to cultivating the most elusive plants because if I don’t get to grow this rare cultivar of an almost extinct water lilly then no one will. My villain origin story is the scene where A-Yuan plucks out the freshly sprouted lotus seed, and no I will not elaborate.

10. Favourite Fanfic Set-Up

Oh god oh man I absolutely adore every single post-canon ‘WWX travels alone to find his place in the world while also yearning so intensely it can be felt across rivers and mountains’ story, those are always so GOOD. I also really enjoy discovering how people are capable of finding new and inventive ways of translating canon into modern AUs - but then I’ve always been obsessed with those.

Oh I’ve been a multishipper as long as I’ve been in fandom - I’m a sucker for NieLan, I really like properly explored ‘second-chances-soulmates-are-made-not-found’ XiCheng, I enjoy the occasional bout of suffering and/or gratuitous denial with XiYao, I like ChengQing, I’ve even been dipping my toes into SangCheng... It’s all good, and the material is RIPE for the taking.

The Untamed/MDZS Ask Game

Dvaesdvaes pesmarica ili ti dvanaest omiljenih pesama koje sam otkrio u prošloj godini.

1. The Bridgeheads - Best Ones

Bridgeheads je bend koji sam otkrio još 2013. godine kada sam upisao treću godinu srednje. Radi se tročlanoj audio porodici (čitaj bendu) poreklom iz Slovačke koji je u svom muzičkom nastojanju bio jedan od najminimalnijih i tehnikalnijih sastava koje sam do tada čuo, a i sada takođe. Pesma Best Ones je u repertoaru ovog benda jedna od hitičnijih, ali i jedna koja mi je svakako promicala do nedavno. Početak pesme se odlikuje minimalnom repeticijom riffa koji se provlači kroz čitavu strofu i progresiju tonova koji su u svom nedostatku bassa kao ritmičkog i melodijskog faktora naglašeni kroz dvožičanu gitaru (zamenjujući bass, svirajući samo oktave) koja je tehničko rešenje pevača Tomaša Bobovčaka, a ujedno i komplementarno zvuku ove grupe kao takvo. Bubanj seva po dobošu i timpanima u kratkoj sekvenci koja se kao i ostatak instrumentacije, ponavlja, evocirajući svojom utilizacijom minimalnog ritma na sviranje Stephen Morrisa iz Joy Divisiona. Tekstopisac i autor, Tomaš Bobovčak poznatiji i kao Tomaš dAsK ne uskraćuje sebi na sirovoj iskrenosti od samog početka pesme, ali ova "brutalna istina" definitivno eskalira u refrenu, manje kroz instrumentaciju, a više poetski i to posebno u tekstu:

If only you'd be here forever

And life would have no end

People like us will stay together

In memories we share

Pesma dolazi do svog logičkog kraja na samoj sredini trajanja i nakon drugog refrena gde se čitava drama svodi na ponavljanje rečenice:

We are the best ones

Nakon čega Tomaš avetinjski zavija ponavljajući iste ove reči do kraja, time naglašavajući subsekventnost ove pesme nakon logičkog svršetka, aludirajući na ljudski život, prag smrti i večnost.

2. Kino - Gruppa Krovi

Cenim da sam jedan od retkih koji je živeo ispod kamena u odnosu na rusku muzičku scenu, a isto tako i u odnosu na ovaj bend. Kino je esencijalni sovijetski post punk sastav, a frontmen korejskog porekla Viktor Tsoi koji je bio glumac i pesnik predominantno, je posthumno dobio status urbane legende, kako zbog stvaralaštva tako i zbog sumnjivog uzroka smrti koji je bio saobraćajka iza koje, kako se veruje, stoji KGB. Naime pesma Gruppa Krovi (Krvna Grupa) iz moje perspektive je igra reči na primarno značenje iste, gde se Krvna Grupa ne odnosi na tip hemoglobina već na vojnike u ratu kao krvnu grupu (krvnike). Dakle pesma je evidentno anti ratna. Instrumentacija ove pesme za mene predstavlja jedan od najminimalnijih muzičkih poduhvata, a da je pride koherentan i da i dalje ima strukturu tradicionalne pop pesme (strofa-refren-strofa). Moj utisak ove pesme jeste Interpol pre Interpola, pogotovu u karakteru bassa i načinu na koji se isti utilizuje, ponekad isplivavajući iz primarnog tona, da bi odsvirao još po koji ton na skali istog, dok je preteći karakter ono što prožima bass deonice na ovoj traci. Tekst koji je na ruskom je dobar, a posebno u refrenu gde glasi:

Группа крови - на рукаве

Мой порядковый номер - на рукаве

Пожелай мне удачи в бою, пожелай мне:

Не остаться в этой траве

Dok je solo deonica na kraju pesme, epitom rokerskog kula na kojoj bi naš Milan Mladenović pozavideo.

3. The Cigarettes - Screaming, Dreaming

Ovaj bend za mene je skoro na ivici obskurnosti, ne zbog sadržaja već zbog informacija o bendu odnosno nedostatku istih. Za sam bend bih rekao da su (na osnovu ove jedne pesme) karakterističan, ali neuobičajen punk bend iz ere gde se alternativna muzika već nazirala. Postoji neko nepisano pravilo, da ako bend čini trojac, onda nekako moraju da kidaju što ovaj sastav baš i radi. A to se ogleda u mom omiljenom delu ove pesme koji je na kraju gde gitare eskaliraju u rokerskoj kakofoniji, nakon čega pesma odlazi u fejd aut, eskalirajući zauvek.

4. Zibra - Better Off Alone

Zibra je bio kratkotrajni projekat elektronskog muzičara (čitaj maga) i jutjubera Sam Battlea sa kanala LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER koji mu je i moniker za solo projekat kao i hub za svoju audio tehnološku eksploraciju. Sama pesma je obrada 90s dens pevačice Alice DJ tj. njenog hita sa kraja devedesetih, Better Off Alone. Slušajući original mogu reći da je pesma dobila improvement u ovoj obradi koja je u maniru elektro indie džinova poput MGMTa i LCD Soundsystema. Nažalost sam bend ne postoji više, ali Sam Battle je tu, i dalje stvara kako pesme tako i gitarske pedale.

5. Cypis - Gdzie jest biały węgorz? (Zejście)

U Poljskoj možda nema poznatijeg izvođača, a toliko anonimnog kao što je Cypis. Kao ruska scena, poljski hip hop, za mene je isto tako neispitano polje. Naslov pesme Gdzie jest biały węgorz? (Zejście) koji u prevodu znači Gde je bela jegulja? (Spuštanje) je samoobjašnjiv, aludirajući na probleme sa adikcijom kao i na krizno stanje koje može uslediti nakon spuštanja sa dejstva droge. Pesma se odlikuje minimalnom instrumentacijom i austeričnim vokalom, dok se u raspoloženju ove trake može naći vapidna apatičnost kakva se može zateći na ranim izdanjima Gorillaz. Spot za pesmu je urađen analogno, u inspiraciji evocirajući na Trainspoting. Tekst pesme ima svoje hajlajtove, na momente spajajući banalnu džanki patetiku sa egzistencijalizmom i to u delu:

6. White Town - Your Woman

Your Woman je pesma koja naprosto zrači nostalgijom. A isto tako ostavlja utisak nečega što je već slušano u prošlosti, ali bez jasne sigurnosti o tome koja je zapravo pesma u pitanju. Your Woman je obskurniji one hit wonder koji žanrovski stoji između trip hopa i brit popa što je dosledno drugoj polovini 90s dekade kada je pesma po prvi put i objavljena. Pesma eksplicitno govori o toksičnoj vezi i neminovnoj eksaserbaciji iste. Dok spot na jedan simpatičan način prati raspoloženje pesme.

7. Panchiko - Laputa

O misterioznom sastavu imam ceo tekst, tako da nemam šta da dodam novo što već nisam rekao ili pomislio. Ceo album je mekana melanholija i prava je poslastica za slušanje. Ovu pesmu sam izdvojio zbog fan made spota koji je napravljen od delova iz Serial Experiments Lain i zato što sam sucker za all things nineties anime i sve stvari koje odišu drugom polovinom devedesetih OK Computerom, Matrixom, ranom digitalizacijom, internetom i naravno anti-konzumerizmom koji se može naći u modernim klasicima poput Fight Cluba koji i u knjizi i u filmskoj interpretaciji odiše urban decay atmosferom što se sociološki odnosi na kraj tradicionalnih etičkih vrednosti i pojavu modernog (digitalizovanog) čoveka tj. onoga koji manje provodi vremena u realnom svetu, a više u svom samoaktuelizovanom, indukovanom mikrosvetu.

8. The American Analog Set - The Wait

Kopanje po lejbelima se nikad nije isplatilo više nego kada sam zakucao na vrata izdavačke kuće Morr Music iz Berlina koja se pretežno bazira na dreampop i indie zvuku, što ujedno predstavlja i lični muzički ukus osnivača iste, Thomasa Morra. Istraživanjem ovog lejbla sam pogodio zlatnu žilu, otkrivši mnoge dobre autore i bendove poput Notwista (koje slušam već 7,8 godina unazad!), Herrman & Kleine, múm, Tarwater i naravno The American Analog Set.

9. Dungen - Stadsvandringar

Postoji određena nepravda u muzičkoj industriji na zapadu tj. jedna od mnogih jer je nažalost muzička industrija kapitalizovana do srži. A kad se kaže zapadni svet misli se na zapadnu kulturu odnosno na engleski govorno područje gde dolazimo do samog problema koji je kulturološka nejednakost i latentni fašizam čak. Ono što pokušavam da objasnim jeste da mnogo veću prohodnost imaju autori koji dolaze iz engleski govornog područija npr. Amerika, Britanija, Kanada i recimo Australija gde ćemo se svakako sa namerom zaustaviti. Slušavši Dungen, bend iz Švedske ili ti više bend projekat švedskog autora Gustav Ejstesa, otkrilo mi se gorepomenuto licemerje i tendencija muzičke industrije da kešira samo najprofitabilnije autore ne mareći za autentičnost, originalnost ili ponekad za autorska prava čak. Kevin Parker, kreativna sila iza australijskog benda Tame Impala stvaralačku iskru kupi od psihodeličnih Beatlesa i ranih albuma Paul McCartneya, ali čitavu estetiku, pristup pa čak i hijerarhijsku strukturu organizacije sopstvenog benda, "posudio" je od skoro deset godina starijeg sastava, Dungen. Ne bacam hejt na čoveka čiji talenat i dalje acclaimujem kao lidžit stvar, ali biti toliko nonšalantan u pozajmici audio estetike je stvarno gde je pregazio liniju, makar za mene. Čak bih dodao da je u rokenrolu "pozajmica" riffova sasvim uobičajena pojava (prvi album Led Zeppelina je dobar primer ovoga), ali preuzeti ceo shtick je tu mač. Zato sad imam problem da slušam TI, otkrivši ove psihodelične šveđane koji pored očigledne prijatne audio estetike svoj kvalitet opravdavaju i dobrim pesmama koje se poigravaju na ivici pop strukture tek toliko, da budu prijatne i zanimljive, ali i dosledne. Preporuka, slušati pa uporediti!

10. Urusei Yatsura - Kewpies Like Watermellon

Fascinacija Velvet Undergroundom je fenomen u svetu rok muzike, a i tema za sebe zapravo. Mada ono čemu se površno možemo obratiti jeste kul faktor ovog benda i činjenica da je njihov rad u muzici kao i stvaralaštvo Lou Reeda uticalo na mirijade autora i bendova koji su se pojavili posle. Naime, Urusei Yatsura su mi privukli pažnju isprva svojim imenom koje su pozajmili od istoimene japanske mange. Ovaj škotski gitarski bend koji je nastao, a i stvarao za vreme brit pop ere, zapada u onu kategoriju bendova koji su po sentimentu više pripadali tadašnjoj američkoj alternativnoj sceni nego hajpu koji se odvijao kod njih. 11. Abandoned Pools - Master (Clone High)

Protekla godina je bila između ostalog i godina kada sam, zbog gomile slobodnog vremena možda pogledao najviše filmova i serija od bilo koje druge godine. E sad, mim kultura ima mnogo slojeva, neki od kojih su čisto besmisleni, dok neki mogu biti i informativni, čak i kultivišući (Jack Stauber je tako postao popularan na internetu). U ovom slučaju radi se o early 2000s seriji po imenu Clone High, koju kad sam video, pomislio sam, zbog stila crtanja, da je možda sa Cartoon Networka, deleći sličnu vizualnu estetiku sa animiranim serijama poput Samurai Jack i Total Drama Island. Ipak, ova serija nije sa CN, već je sa MTV, što je zbog sadržaja za odrasle, sasvim prikladno. Serija prati priču Abraham Lincolna tj. njegovog klona koji sada ima 15 godina i ide u srednju školu gde susreće klonove Cleopatre koja je najzgodnija riba u školi, JFKa koji je budimo realni, najinteresantniji lik u seriji, konstantno napaljenog Gandija (zbog kojeg je serija i otkazana) i depresivne Jovanke Orleanke. Mada ono što mi je prvo privuklo pažnju jeste uvodna špica koju je napisao Tommy Walter iz benda Abandoned Pools. Ova traka je epitom najntiz zvuka i generacije x. Slušajući ovu pesmu osećao sam se kao da prvi put slušam bendove poput Built To Spill, Pavement i Guided By Voices. Stvarno sjajno!

12. Arianne Schreiber & Shiro Sagisu - Komm, Süsser Tod (Come, Sweet Death)

Prošla godina je tematski bila prava za mnoge stvari. Pored obilnosti introspektivnih razmišljanja, povratka prirodi (a donekle i sebi), takođe su se pogledali mnogi filmovi i serije, naime Hideaki Annovo čedo Neon Genesis Evangelion. NGE sam pogledao prvi put kada sam se doselio u Beograd, negde u februaru 2016. i pored sopstvene tadašnje anksioznosti, gledajući seriju, samo sam pridodavao sebi osećanje nelagadnosti i nervoze. Gledajući seriju opet protekle godine, imao sam totalno drugačije raspoloženje. Umesto blage uznemirenosti, imao sam mir, namesto nelagodnosti, uživao sam u seriji po prvi put. Mada završivši seriju još jednom, osetih da fali širi kontekst nekih dešavanja u istoj. Tada sam pogledao finalizaciju serije u obliku filma, The End Of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Inicijalni hod serije sadrži 26 epizoda, gde se radnja epizoda 25 i 26 odvija u unutrašnjem svetu protagoniste Shinji Ikarija, dok film pruža uvid u spoljašnja dešavanja za vreme navedenih epizoda, time pružajući proširen kontekst za već konfuznu radnju originalne serije. Film doživljava produkcijsko unapređenje, pogotovu u vizualnom odeljenju, gde se neki vizuali održavaju i dan danas.

Hello and welcome to the next episode of the Clowneries! Today we will focus on the role of the coloc in s5 and on the future of Eliott and Lucas. Since instagram users srodulv and lucallemant couldn’t chill for one more day and already spoiled our clowning yesterday smh at least they already confirmed two of three theories for today:

1. Lucas moves in with Eliott and Arthur takes his room in the flatshare

2. Eliott works in a video rental shop

3. Lucas becomes Arthur’s guru

1. Lucas moving out and Arhtur moving in

If you’ve read our theory that the principal is Arthur’s father, you already know that his home situation is not peachy. The next theory was inspired by the bts photos from night shoot on 31.10/01.11:

Yesterday evening was without doubt one of the most strong and incredible night shoots of all 6 seasons combined. And in this kind of night, when the narrative stakes are so high, every single detail matters. The organization, including the plans of the day before to catch up on, the energy of everyone halfway through the filming, the ability of our electro / machino team to install an incredible structure at 4 am as the faculty of our camera team tries to install a camera + large optics in a box not necessarily made for that.

So what we know is this: night shoot was incredible, Robin was on set and most likely Alienor and Edouard were as well. Those three things combined gave me chills as my brain cell provided me with this theory:

Other circles/parallels that were already in the show: (1) in 1x06 Emma says to Lucas “you’re a good person” and then Lucas says it to Imane in 4x08; (2) in 2x13 Manon says to Lucas “you’re not alone”, then obviously he passes it on to Eliott in 3x09, then in 4x10 Imane says “someone who will understand you and makes you feel like you will never be alone.” (on the sidenote if anyone talented wants to gif those, then please do, i’ve been waiting for this for ages ajsksjd)

So if my theory is right, we would get another two parallels to the circle: (1) another person in the flatshare who needs help because they’re struggling (Manon -> Lucas -> Arthur) making the room in the coloc a Safe Place which is quite poetic if you ask me and (2) Imane telling Lucas (and Eliott) in 4x10 “it’s time for you to get your room back” and Elu moving in together.

Now almost two weeks after I came up with this, Axel leaks a story from the filming that basically confirms that Elu are living together in a new appartment now. Obviously at that time we could assume that they’re hanging out at Basile’s or Arthur’s or Yann’s BUT there were too many things that suggested it’s Elu’s place like (1) the matching polka dot robe and pyjama pants, (2) blue walls (they scream Lucas), (3) drawings on the walls (Eliott). Also twitter user @indriee27 spotted that the art on the wall seems to be the same Maxence once posted on his instagram (it’s no longer there now):

Conclusion: those sappy bastards moved in together and honestly? love that for them :’) (they even have a fireplace!!!)

Either way, the story makes me think that we might get a saturday/sunday morning clip from their new appartment at some point in s5 🤞

A month later and thanks to instagram users srodulv and lucallemant, we already got the confirmation that they are moving in together :’)

2. Eliott works in the video rental shop

What they also confirmed is that Eliott works in the video rental shop... which is actually something I’ve been talking about for weeks now because I had a gut feeling about this. But first things first, we have to jump to the first time we got a glimpse of the store - on the 10.06 David posted a photo with Maxence there:

Now originally the theory was a little bit far fetched and it was inspired by these photos - exclusive sneak peak of the Clown Doc, section Theories, p. 211:

We didn’t have any other evidence at this point so we let it be until we found this and our interest in the theory resurfaced again:

One night, one cellar, one video club...

And now we obviously know that we were right about this, thanks to Eliott himself :’) At the same time some new bts from the filming were found which you can see here and here’s another exclusive sneak peak we found:

3. Lucas becomes Arthur’s guru

Final theory for today was inspired by skamlaserie photo of Assa and Edouard:

When you know that the torch is in the right hands.

Obviously, we know that it implies passing the ‘main’ title from Assa to Robin, but what if the fact that Edouard is in the photo as well is not accidental? What if Lucas takes over from Mika and becomes the next guru for Arthur? For example we have this photo:

Robin (Arthur?) looks completely broken, like he knows his life is hell and he accepted it because he doesn’t think anything can change for the better: Well this photo may as well be just a bts but what if we get an actual clip with bro talk by the tree trunk?

So that would be all for today! As you can see, thanks to Eliott’s post and Lucas’ comment two of our theories were already confirmed and the season haven’t even started yet! Which is why we ask you again to trust us - we know we’re right 😊

I was told that grell has "outbursts of masculine speech" in the manga...whatever that means.

Dear Anon,

At risk of sounding rude, I hope whoever told you that is not aiming for a JLPT1-certificate…

In the manga, Grell’s speech is not demure or calm (traditionally feminine qualities) in the slightest. As such, the ‘outbursts’ are one of unconstrained energy, not masculinity.

The femininity in Grell’s speech is very, very consistent throughout the entire manga (after she has dropped her role as the male butler, of course). I could therefore take photographs of the entire manga, but this one text-balloon itself is already a rather perfect sum-up of her speech. I shall go into more detail.

As briefly touched upon in this post and this post, in Japanese, language is an exceptionally telling method with which speakers express their identity. While the latter post only discussed ‘formality vs informality’, the same goes for gendered markers.

Pronouns

Many of us are familiar with ‘Watashi - Boku - Ore’. Among the humongous list of 1st person pronouns, Japanese 1st person pronouns also include three hyper feminine ones: ‘atashi’, ‘warawa’ and ‘uchi’. As ‘warawa’ is incredibly old-fashioned and is only used by wives of lords, and ‘uchi’ is rather infantilised, only ‘atashi’ remains as a pronoun that may accurately represent a modern and sophisticated woman.

Similarly, ‘anta’, a feminine-coded version of ‘anata’ (you), is the 2nd person pronoun Grell consistently uses. ‘Anta’ is not used by speakers who wish to express masculinity or gender-neutrality.

Ending Particles

Though perhaps less widely known, Japanese is also punctuated with ending particles that helps the speaker express their identity. Among many others, feminine ending particles include ‘wa’, ‘yo’, and ‘wa yo’. Grell ends most of her lines with these ending particles. Other users of these ending particles include Madam Red, Nina Hopkins, Queen Victoria, Lizzie, and Irene Diaz.

Emphasis

Japanese uses three writing systems, Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana. Without going into details about the first two, the last, ‘Katakana’ is used to write 1. loanwords, 2. obscure negative connotations (sometimes ‘pimple’ or ‘brat’ for example are written in Katakana), or 3. to catch the reader’s attention. Number 3 is bit similar to CAPS LOCK. The feminine ending particles used by Grell are always written in ‘Katakana’.

The speech pattern Grell uses is known as ‘Onee Kotoba’, or  **‘Tranny Language’, also briefly touched upon in this post. “Tranny/Onee” is of course a slur, but (trans)gender studies evolved very different in Japanese society, but 10 years ago there was a lack of accurate terminology, hence this offensive use of term.

The main difference between this so-called ‘Tranny Language’ and ‘feminine speech’ boils down to emphasis. Transwomen are not taken very seriously and still seen as ‘effeminate men’. It is likely that the greater emphasis originated from an attempt to ‘compensate’ for the speaker’s perceived masculinity. Nowadays the language has been more or less coined, and is more of a lingual statement. Hence: Grell’s use of language is to make a statement about her gender identity.

The ‘motto ii otoko’ or ‘SMEXIER’ in Grell’s line above is also an emphasised, very femininely marked use of language. (Do masculine-presenting English speakers use ‘smexy’ unironically??? Honest question. I am not 100% sure.)

TLN: ‘Smexy’ is not an accurate translation of ‘ii otoko’ (‘a good man’), but the connotation is what is important here.

For Comparison

As we are talking about this topic anyway, I wish to draw attention to Sieglinde.

In this post I mentioned Sieglinde’s use of language that defies gendered expectations. Many of us know that ‘boku’ is a traditionally masculine language marker. On top of using ‘boku’, Sieglinde also uses ending particles such as ‘zo’, or other markers such as ‘omae-ra’ (plr. you), as opposed to the slightly more neutral ‘omae-tachi’ or fully neutral ‘anata-tachi’.

Other markers are ‘tomaran’, as opposed to ‘tomaranai/tomarimasen’ (to stop). More strongly even, ‘iza!!’ (⇈ left), a masculine and almost military way of saying: “Alright!!”, or ‘美味い！‘ (umai・⇊ right), an incredibly ungraceful way of saying ‘delicious’.

How did Sieglinde come to use this speech? Considering how Sieglinde grew up in a village consisting of only women with one notable exception - Wolfram - the only way to explain this is that she learned talking from Wolf ❤🐺 Well, I think it’s cute and a small, meaningful addition to her connection with him (*´▽｀*)ノ
