Y'know what? I'm kinda tired, at this point. I've written many metas before and I'll write many more, but at the end of the day, do you know why I know the writers of OFMD want us to like Ed? Because he's a romantic lead in a romcom and they wrote him to be easily sympathetic and likeable. You know why I figure they intended us to read Izzy's actions as antagonistic before his s2 arc? Because they wrote him to have antagonistic actions. It really is just that simple and I'm absolutely shocked there's even differing opinions here.

And it's frustrating, because I often feel like I can't really talk about Izzy the way I want to. I really like Izzy, I think he's hilarious and a lot of fun and I genuinely enjoy his s2 arc a lot, especially on rewatches and knowing how it ends. But I feel like I always have to waste time spelling out how Izzy is a supporting character and his arc in s2 was more about proving that Stede's philosophy wins, in the end, and granting Ed closure and proving people can grow and change, and not about how it was about proving Izzy is the specialest character ever who never did anything wrong. He's not special here, EVERY supporting character serves the purpose of supporting our leads' arcs. That's why they're in the story; I loved Buttons but I'm not complaining about him turning into a seagull just to show Ed that people can change.

Just, like, if you're constantly bending over backwards to defend one of the only stereotypically masc White guys on the show, especially when it involves mischaracterizing and villifying our indigenous lead, I just think you might not actually like the show very much at best and you might also need to take a look at some of your personal biases.

Sorry anon youve been in my inbox for a while ':D Hmm my love for Izzy started only this season, it's not like I didnt care for him last year but I didnt take him very seriously (there is an izzy fursona drawn by me floating around the internet somewhere) , so I didnt really give him that much thought. One thing that i kept thinking about while writing the second videos script tho is that we truly know absurdly little about Izzy. We pretty much know everything about Stedes life before pirating, Eds little bit (weird childhood, worked for Hornigold, etc), but with Izzy we have nothing. We only know hes been with Blackbeard for years. I mean it makes sense that we dont really know anything because well, it's not like Izzy liked anyone enough in s1 to tell them about his past and in s2 hes trying to look into future, not past, so ofc he isnt really talking about it (not like he has any time to have a normal conversation with anyone anyways with this weird ass pacing). I'm kind of glad we dont know anything about him tho. Makes it feel like Izzys life started when he met Blackbeard. Which makes everything even more tragic.

The ‘Izzy is a victim of abuse and Ed is an abuser’ crowd seems to omit the fact that Izzy sabotaged every shot at happiness Ed ever had and literally SOLD ED’S BEST FRIEND/CRUSH TO THE NAVY TO CERTAIN DEATH

Not only is Izzy just again and again proven to be yet another yt man emotionally abusing and controlling Ed, constantly brings him down and threatens his life until he’s suicidal and becomes the manic Blackbeard Izzy clearly so adores, I would shoot Izzy’s leg off too if he sold my boo to the English just bc I wasn’t paying attention to him

Saying Izzy is just a victim of abuse is very reductive of his character and honestly he would probably spit in your face if he heard you

Being a canon Izzy fan but not a fanon Izzy fan is exhausting. Being someone who wants to try and engage with Izzy but either being yelled at for asking a mere question is exhausting. Trying to keep my mind open and watching that new YT video just to hardly get two minutes in and be confronted with the most bad faith takes and twisting of canon I've seen is tiring. Why do I even try at this point?

Good time to stake up one of those "in this house we belive" flags in my yard

in this house we believe:

it's awesome and fun to like any character from OFMD that you want, have fun shipping whatever and coming up with headcanons, etc.

it's also pretty awesome that Ed got to fight back against another angry yt man in his life who admitted on his deathbed that he'd been controlling and abusive towards Ed for years, and I'm tired of pretending that it's not

you can read a text in any way you want, but when you approach an often-subversive show like OFMD with the intention to center the angry yt guy, that's often going to lead to reads of the text that make fans of color uncomfortable because an Izzy-centric read that doesn't consider his antagonistic role will almost invariably position Ed as a villain in a way that contradicts the text and often negates the anti-racist messages in the show

it's fine to not like Ed and Stede, but this is The Ed and Stede Show and Their Relationship Is The Show, and denying these things about it will also lead to reads that go against the purpose and themes of the text

Cops and Youtubers

Non-Shadoworld cop AU The NYPD has an image problem. At best, civilians are disillusioned with the police, at worst, they are uncooperative or hostile. To counteract this, an idea is proposed. A Youtube channel. "A day in the life" style, episodic documentary. The division under Captain Luke Garroway has been elected to test it out. And since Luke's daughter is a youtuber herself, he manages to get her to be the assigned "host". She comes with her own camera man (Simon). Alec, Jace and Izzy all work for the precinct. Alec and Jace are detectives under Captain Garroway, Izzy is the station's head pathologist. While his siblings are rather taken with the idea (and the two youtubers who now regularly follow them around), Alec is not amused ™️ He doesn't like Clary, or Simon, or the whole youtube deal and being on camera. That is, until Clary invites one of her youtuber friends who is insanely popular on YT, to do a collab with the format in order to boost views. His name is Magnus Bane. And suddenly Alec doesn't hate the whole thing quite so much anymore.
