ranked list of who in er wins fights
13. jeanie boulet, because she is a pacifist by nature. she got into one (1) fight in high school, which she lost. after that she swore off drama class forever. (she still attended for the rest of the year.)
12. robert romano. the man talks a big game for someone who would lose to a bored enough third grader. is he small? yes. is he highly specialized and unable to see outside his bubble? also yes. are these the reasons why he loses? almost certainly.
11. mark greene. he lost the fight with his ex-wife and just kept losing from there.
10. carol hathaway. despite being somewhat well-acquainted with schadenfreude, she does not have reason nor muscle to inflict pain herself.
9. john carter. theory says he wrestled in high school. he’s come a long way since then. see my post about him hitting the floor in trauma for more details.
8. peter benton. can he fight? probably. the last time he did was fifteen years ago. twelve-year-old petey got his butt kicked at summer camp. current petey gets his butt kicked in wars of words with corday and romano. he’s a dad now. let him live.
7. neela rasgotra. she’s little neela now, but in middle school they called her “the terror.” she used to bite.
6. abby lockhart. champion hair-puller. once broke janet coburn’s nose after coburn said she couldn’t punch. they’ve been friends ever since.
5. elizabeth corday. she attended british private school. must i say more?
4. doug ross. protector of babies. george of clooney. perpetrator of just the stupidest shit you’ve ever seen in your life.
3. kerry weaver.
2. susan lewis. young susie lewis was a wild child. once in senior year of high school, she climbed in her then boyfriend’s brother’s window (by accident - she couldn’t remember which window he said was his), then started a fight with her boyfriend’s brother’s girlfriend, who had used the door. not even counting her relationship with chloe.
1. luka kovac. canonically so good at fighting, he killed a man. by accident. please other people remember this happened.

An October That Ends in August - Part 2/3
Chapter Two
“Peter, did you hear-- Kerry’s a lesbian.”
Peter responded, but didn’t look up from the journal he was reading as Shirley got a cup of coffee. “Good for her.”
“I guess that she and Kim Legaspi were going out, but, it blew up because of Romano.”
That got Peter’s attention, “Excuse me?”
Shirley held her hands up, “I’m just repeating what I heard. I’ve always sorta liked her. No nonsense. We could use more of that in this hospital, and less… shenanigans. Less coming and going… fewer… interpersonal relationships within a department that implode.”
She gave Peter a look that he totally missed as he stood. “Thank you Shirley.”
She watched him leave the lounge, “She actually listened to the nurses and support staff…”
oOOOOo  oOOOOo
“We must do something about this Mark.”
Mark shook his head, “You don’t even like her Elizabeth.”
Elizabeth bristled, “That isn’t true Mark. I didn’t like how she handled your tumor, but, the rumor is that her vacation was actually a suspension. And I will not let that happen to a co-worker. To a female co-worker. Obviously Romano is making another play for the Emergency Department head job. Again.” She met Mark’s eyes, challenging him, “Is that what you want Mark? There are worse things than Kerry Weaver.”
oOOOOo  oOOOOo
“Carl, is it a good idea to rile Doctor Romano?”
“Oh, you mean in response to the fact that he suspended and fired my subordinate without a word to me either time? Oh, he’s not going to know what hit him.”
The psychiatric nurse gave a pregnant pause, “I believe he’s trying to get Kerry fired too.”
“Nope. I like her. That’s not going to happen either.”
The nurse blinked, “You like her? No one likes her, liked her, except for Kim… Dr. Legaspi.”
“Enough. I like her enough. I’ll be in Romano’s office if anyone needs me.”
oOOOOo  oOOOOo
“Randi. What did you do?”
Randi put on her most innocent look, and turned, “Who me?”
Abby crossed her arms over her chest, “Someone or someones from almost every department is about to descend on Robert Romano’s office furious and all for different reasons.” Abby paused, “Randi.”
Randi was silent for another moment, then shrugged, “Look. She’s always been good to me. Kerry has. In this dump heap she’s my favorite person. We started around the same time, and while she’s a hard taskmaster, she’s also always fair. I-- she’s my friend. I think.” Randi smirked, “I did get her the Chief of the ER position,” her grin dimmed, “and she’s in pain. Getting-- Romano-- off her back. It’s the least I can do. And, I didn’t lie to anyone, I was just a little birdie whispering in their ears.
Abby shook her head, “Remind me to never be your enemy Miranda Fronczak. You’re… a force.”
Randi gave a bow, “Thank you very much.” She changed the subject, “I think Luka was looking for you.”
Abby put down the chart in her hands, “Later. I’m going to go watch the fireworks. You coming?”
“Frank. I’m taking my break.” Randi put her arm through Abby’s, “So, are you straight or a bit bendable Abigail Lockhart?”
“What?”
Randi laughed.
oOOOOo  oOOOOo
“Are you sure Kerry?”
Kerry nodded, “I will be forever grateful for what working at County has given me. What I’ve learned here. Who I’ve met here.” She quirked an eyebrow, “Even what I’ve learned from you Robert. But, my time here needs to come to an end. Sure. I could try and fight for a bigger role. I’d win too. You wouldn’t know what hit you. It’d take me…” she stared off for a second, “...two years at the most. But, it wouldn’t make me happy.”
Romano shook his head and sat back in his chair, “The blonde. Legaspi. She’s not worth it Kerry.”
“Why, because she turned you down?”
“Because she’s a pretty one, and we’re not. We’re the hard workers, the plains, the ones with the money and power. The pretty ones, oh, they’ll like you for awhile, but, then they’ll be gone, leaving your destroyed heart behind.” He was silent for a moment, “You’re the flame, steadfast and true, she’s just a moth that will either fly away or die. No matter how much you love her, she will never love you as much.”
Kerry stood perfectly still for so long that Romano pushed away from his desk and stood. “Don’t give me that look Kerry. I’m obviously not talking about myself. I’m the Chief of Staff at County General Hospital in Chicago, not to mention a damn amazing surgeon. I want for nothing, and have sex whenever I want it. Don’t feel bad for me.”
“I hope that you can heal from whatever, whoever, hurt you Robert.”
Romano stopped in front of Kerry, “Now. What’s going to happen is that I’m going to give you platonic and in no way sexually harassing hug. And if you ever tell anyone, I will kill you.”
Kerry was stiff as Romano wrapped his arms around her. After a moment, though, when it became apparent that he was simply doing what he said he was going to do, she reciprocated, hugging him back. Then they separated. Kerry spoke, “That was weird.”
Romano nodded, “It was, let’s never do it again.”
Brenda’s voice came over the interoffice intercom. “Doctor Romano, there are… quite a few people waiting to talk to you. And they don’t seem to care that you’re in a meeting.”
“Kerry. Good luck. Perhaps you’ll have better luck with your pretty one than I did.”
Before Kerry could respond the door banged open and everyone that had been outside streamed in. From Janet Coburn, to Peter, to Elizabeth, to Carl, and even more. Kerry slipped out in the melee. As she got past the doorway she turned back towards the office. She put her fingers to her chin and then moved her hand towards Robert. The ASL sign for Thank You. Robert inclined his head and focused on his office intruders and their demands.
Kerry found Randi by the elevator and pulled her into an empty conference room. Randi smirked, “Gonna ravage me?”
“You will fix this once I’m gone?”
Randi nodded, her face serious, “I will. I-- there are many people in this hospital who will be sad to see you go. Some here even like you.”
Kerry put a hand to Randi’s cheek for a moment, “Thank you Randi. You’ve always been there for me.”
Randi swallowed, “I’ve always considered you a friend.”
Kerry shook her head, “No, no…” she hugged Randi, “We’re sisters Miranda.”
They parted and Randi cleared her throat a couple of times, “That… make sure to call me when you get there. When you get back together too.” She smirked, “Maybe she has a brother.”
“No, her brother Thomas Jr., TJ died in her arms when she was a kid.” Kerry grinned, “She does have a twin sister though, Carol.”
Randi opened and closed her mouth, “Identical?” Kerry nodded, “There are two of them?”

One thing you need to know about me... I love Murder, She Wrote. Even though the series ended when I was only four years old and I didn't start watching it in reruns until I was a preteen/teen it immediately became one of my favorite binge-worthy shows, long before Netflix or Hulu or streaming services became a thing. But as I was rewatching it this past year I noticed actors I recognized that I never realized were on the show in guest-starring roles. 19 Actors You Never Knew Guest-Starred on Murder, She Wrote1. Abby’s talk with Janet Coburn is everything to me. Coburn says exactly the right things and provides Abby with so much comfort.
It’s so obvious that Abby does want this, but she’s so scared of all the things that could go wrong. It’s beautiful that she has people in her life affirming her choices AND reassuring her about what she’s capable of.

In order to live happily ever after, they need to put in the work.

ER Observations/Questions
- Alex is still in the hospital, though he gets extubated by the end of the ep, and Sam and Tony are...chilly. She can’t get over it and she tells him it’s over, even though it breaks her heart.
- Jerry’s back!
- Janet Coburn’s “are you kidding me” face when Tracy asks if she’s sure about a diagnosis—I’ve missed you, Janet.
- Neela helps a post c-section mom escape deportation, with Banfield’s urging. He’s not as terrible now, but no, Neela. Come on.
- Morris is doing better, but please give him a happy storyline now, show.

What It Means When You Think About Your Death but Don't Want to Die
Janet Coburn Contributor
Editor's Note
If you experience suicidal thoughts, the following post could be potentially triggering. You can contact the Crisis Text Line by texting “START” to 741741.
“I hope I don’t wake up tomorrow morning.”
That is the classic thought of someone living with passive suicidal ideation. It’s not really a desire to die by suicide; It’s just a way of expressing how much it hurts to be you.
It’s not active suicidal ideation — the kind where you make an actual plan to end your life, even if you never put it into action. It’s passive, meaning you’d like to be dead but don’t intend on doing anything about it. It’s like asking the universe to take over and do it for you.
I’ve certainly had passive suicidal thoughts. Once, I was very stressed and depressed while coming home from a business conference. I clearly remember thinking, “Maybe the plane will go down and keep me from having to deal with all this.” I certainly had no plan to rush the cockpit or anything like that. I just wanted my pain to be over. I wanted the choice taken out of my hands.
At that time I was not actively suicidal. I’ve been there once too, and this was completely different. When I was suicidal, I had actual plans and plenty of means to carry out any one of them. I’m not going to discuss what those plans were. (The difficulty of choosing among them may have been what kept me from actually doing it. By then, my depression had lifted just enough for me to get help.)
It was easy enough later to make jokes about the passively suicidal occasions and most people took them as exactly that – jokes. It was even plausible they were jokes. It was only much later I thought about it and realized I needed help even on those occasions. After all, isn’t pain the source of much humor and the downfall of many comedians?
Passive suicidal ideation is asking yourself “what if?” What if my troubles were over? What if my pain was gone? What if all I had to do to accomplish this was to let that vehicle hit me instead of stepping out of the way?
The important thing to remember is that someone passively suicidal is in great psychological pain and wants not to feel that way anymore. In that respect, it’s similar to self-harm. And like those acts, it doesn’t end the pain at all. It may be a temporary escape valve, but it’s not a solution.
Passive suicidal ideation is certainly something to take seriously, and an excellent reason to see your psychiatrist or therapist as soon as possible. If you hear a friend or loved one talking this way, encourage them as strongly as possible to seek help. Let a professional decide if the person has passive suicidal ideation or active suicidal ideation. It is entirely possible that passive suicidal ideation will lead to the more active kind and even to death if it is not dealt with.

Top 10 ER episodes?
hmmm....
10. And In the End... (15x22) a good ol’ series finale.
9. Whose Appy Now? (3x14) the whole premise of this episode isn’t anything special, but peter benton’s gruff distaste for everything including the possibility that he might die is just... so fun to watch.
8. Secrets and Lies (8x16) i love a good bottle episode! this one just happens to be funny, heartfelt, and containing susan lewis.
7. Fathers and Sons (4x07) because i REALLY love a good bottle episode
6. The Good Fight (5x08), i mention this in my Carter Moments list because oh boy is it a good ol’ relationshippy episode. plus it’s another bottle episode
5. Baby Shower (2x15). the premise of this episode (along with the title) is one of my favourite things ever. plus, it’s a good episode -- happy ending, janet coburn, lesbians -- you can’t go wrong.
4. 24 Hours (1x01). the pilot! introduces the main lads! carter and greene do That Scene (you know the one i’m talking about!) it’s an hour and a half long! i was kind of suspicious of the concept of ER before i actually watched it, but i was hooked as of this episode, and it still remains one of my favourite.
3. A Shift in the Night (2x18) probably the episode i talk about more than anyone else does. it’s just kind of perfect, that’s why! the ultimate bottle episode, it primarily features exactly 3 major characters, is a self-contained story, and is pretty much never mentioned again. that montage at the end where they clear out the waiting room makes me tear up.
2. Blizzard (1x10) the first major trauma ever on ER! while ppl who don’t have a strong stomach may not care for this episode, its high-stress nature (and that wonderful cold open) lie forever in my heart. carter limps around the whole episode with a cast on his leg. linda farrell from novell pharmaceuticals is a good person. patrick is a delight. bob saves somebody. the legend angela hicks is introduced!!!!!!
1. Exodus (4x15). how could i not talk about exodus. lizzie corday is perfect as a plucky paramedic. carol and ross share a tricky trial in the elevator. carter takes charge. the whole thing is just totally perfect. it’s a delight from start to finish.

Nine years. Nine years of Christmases since Luka had come into her life. They’ve only been together a handful of them—together together—even if they’ve been in proximity for nearly all of them.
It’s been rocky, it’s been a hell of a rollercoaster, but Abby wouldn’t trade it for a smoother road, not if it’s brought her here.
I’m posting the first chapter since it goes along with the episode @somekindofflowergirl and I are starting with tonight (7.09, The Greatest of Gifts)! Hope you enjoy.
