Hi, hello, it’s me again here.
So, of course my competitive butt had to take my own comment about Yuki/Alex as a challenge and now I have 12k or more of a draft.
But I don’t know if I’m doing it correctly, I NEED HELP (also mental help, possibly). I was mostly inspired by AJR’s song ‘Turning out’, which I highly recommend because it’s A MASTERPIECE.
The general idea is: Yuki finds a stray puppy during a storm and he brings it to the prt clinic at the ground floor of his apartment complex where Alex has just started working.
They start to get to know each other but Yuki is still nit sure if he actually likes Alex or if he sees him as a best friend, since he’s never cared about actually getting into a relationship so he had never actually looked at the difference between love and in love.
But it’s also a big period of his life because both Charles and Pierre have moved out of the apartment that they used to all (as in Yuki, Pierre and Charles) live in during university because they have started working and have decided to move in either their respective partners.
Charles is already engaged with Carlos (of course there’s Charlos, it’s my fic) and Pierre hints at proposing to George (I don’t know where this ship came from in my mind but I wanted it, so I wrote about it), and Yuki is starting to feel lonely. [also, other side-couples are Sewis and Landoscar]
He has the company of a puppy called Kuri (because it’s Japanese for chestnut, and I imagine Yuki with a poodle with chestnut fur) and Alexander Albon, funny and tall and easygoing but he doesn’t know what it means to him.
So, lots of introspection as it’s common in my fics and fluff because Yalex has to be a comfort ship, sorry. (And I’m also planning on smut, hehe)
Anyway, here is a little snippet, let me know what you think about it (keep in mind that I am NOT British and I do NOT have a beta reader):
Karma may be a little fickle tonight, but it certainly pulls him to its side when the heavy rain turns into a light drizzle halfway through his way back to his apartment complex – which isn’t a long journey, per se, but Yuki surely isn’t one to look into a gifted horse’s mouth.
So, by the time he has reached the closed doors of the vet clinic, he is shivering much less than before and the biting cold in his bones has turned into an uncomfortable chill shiver running down his spine from time to time.
What is annoying is the hair plastered down to his eyes dripping wet and the fact that he can’t even try and move a few strands out because his arms are already stuffed full of the sleeping body of a tiny, harmed puppy.
Good God.
The doors stay closed when he finds a sheltered place under the brick's roof of the entrance, but Yuki knows for a fact that Sebastian is never able to leave this place until it’s ten in the evening, because there’s always some animal staying the night after an operation, and he would probably rather close the clinic for good instead of leaving them alone for more than eight hours.
Yuki had never got it, honestly, the sleep and the warm comfort of his bed seems like a much better prospect than staying around sleeping animals in pain, but now that he’s looking at the limp tiny thing in his arms, he may start to understand.
“Sebastian!” he calls out, reaching with his pinky finger to the doorbell. He cries his name a bunch of times, because the rain is starting to fall again and his voice might get covered soon enough, and there’s no way that Yuki is going to wait for him to close everything up – that might take hours, the puppy may be hurting too much by then. “Sebastian, please, it’s an emergency” he must sound like a possessed man, and the lady on the first floor will probably have something to complain about in their next condominium meeting. But she always talks too loudly on her phone on Sunday mornings when Yuki is trying to sleep away a tremendous hangover, so she can honestly go fuck herself – respectfully.
It still takes a few more minutes and a few more desperate calls for the door to open and the dim yellow light of the waiting room to seep on the steps. Yuki slips inside without even waiting for it to open completely, clutching the jacket close to his chest and exhaling deeply through his nose when the warmth of the air-conditioned room finally engulfs him. The puppy sighs against his chest, so it must appreciate the change in temperature, too.
“See, I told you buddy I would get you safe. Yuki always keeps his promises” he says softly, shuffling the bundle of leather closer to his face. The puppy smells pretty bad, a mix of blood and dumpsters rubbish from London neighborhoods, but its tiny eyes are staring back at him all lucid and wide and full of fondness, like it can actually feel love for him, and Yuki can’t even consider the possibility of getting it too far away from his nose.
Yuki may have just fallen in love, too. But it also might be the adrenaline of acting like a freaking hero in a rainstorm when he can barely reach the top cupboard of his kitchen with the help of a stepladder.
But Disney never made a movie about short heroes; he never had a figure to look up to during his childhood.
“Now Sebastian here will take really good care of you, yes? He won’t ever hurt you. Right Seb-” Yuki stops in his tracks when his gaze meets a pair of brown eyes that definitely do not belong to Sebastian, especially with the way he almost has to bend his neck in half to actually look at the face in front of him and not at the expanse of a broad chest hugged by a plain blue polo.
This is not Sebastian’s chest and not Sebastian’s hair and definitely not Sebastian’s lips and definitely definitely not Sebastian’s white coat. Oh.
“You’re not Sebastian” Yuki says dumbly.
Surely enough, there’s a tall lanky guy standing in front of the now closed door, looking only slightly stunned at Yuki’s sudden outburst, like it’s normal to have someone barging inside a vet clinic at half past nine on a Thursday night in the middle of yet another London’s rainy day.
Oh god, but what if this guy is the one who actually barged in? What if Yuki has just uncovered a burglar? But would a burglar open the door for him?
The guy stares at Yuki in silence for two long seconds before he starts patting his abdomen, pretending to check his whole appearance. “Oh, fuck I’m not Sebastian!” the guy exclaims, looking frantically at his fingers, clenching and unclenching his fists like he’s trying to make out the shape of them.
Yuki snorts, shaking his head. This guy could never be a burglar even if his life depended on it, it seems. Besides, he might be slim enough to pass through anything, but he’s still too tall to go unnoticed.
“No, I’m not Sebastian” tall guy says, chuckling to himself. “I’m Alex. You almost made me have an existential crisis right then and there.”
“Identity theft is not a joke”
Alex raises an amused eyebrow at him, like he’s trying to make out the space where Yuki fits in his vision, and he smiles, wide and bright with big teeth and all. “You’re a cultured man, Yuki.”
Yuki furrows his eyebrows in confusion, “How do you know my name?” He asks, looking at the puppy in his arms to make sure- oh, right. “Oh”
Alex laughs again, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He must have a tendency for it or maybe it’s just Yuki who looks funny in general. A lot of people have told him that in the past and he still doesn’t know if it’s a good or bad thing.
“You’re funny” Alex states, like it’s some kind of irrefutable axiom. He clasps his hands, taking a few steps forward to start inspecting the bundle between Yuki’s arms. “I heard there was an emergency.”
Instinctively, Yuki clutches the jacket closer, one finger gently caressing the single dot of white in the middle of the beige fur of his head. The puppy yelps softly, snuggling its little nose towards Yuki’s chest, and his heart swells like a balloon.
“Yeah, I really need Sebastian” Yuki says, “I mean, this little thing is hurt, and it really needs a vet.”
“Well, then, it’s a good coincidence I work here, no?” Alex smiles wide, teeth showing between his lips.
Yuki blinks at him. “Uh, no you don’t?” He says but it sounds more like a question than a statement. But, to be fair, he lives above the place, and he has known everyone around here for ages, he would’ve surely remembered someone as tall as this Alex, with such bright dyed hair and this adorable smile-
“Uh, yes I do?” Alex says back, grinning. “I mean, just since this morning. But officially I work here.”
“I’ve never seen you around. And I live here” Yuki says defensively, trying his very best to show at least a smidge of self-consciousness even though he will probably give up pretty easily if Alex keeps staring at him like this – big eyes, big smile, hair that look incredibly morbid.
He hasn’t seen a new face in a while, more so belonging to a cute guy, and there’s still a beer slowly swimming in his stomach, so he should be justified.
“I moved recently” Alex explains, not giving much information away to satiate Yuki’s curiosity. He arches an eyebrow, finally touching the sides of the jacket hanging from Yuki’s arms. Yuki lets him just because he doesn’t really know what to do anymore, and if the guy is really a vet as he’s claiming to be, then he should trust him more than himself.
It definitely is not because his brain is slowly turning to mush at their proximity.
“Now, let’s see what we have here” Alex says, carefully taking the jacket from his arms.
The puppy goes willingly without even whimpering once, instead snuggling happily as it’s deposited against the chest of a new stranger. Traitor, Yuki thinks, though he would probably react the same in its place.
“Hi little baby. How cute are we? So much” Alex coos gently, caressing with his index finger the same spot Yuki had been gently scraping earlier. The puppy gives another satisfied yelp. “Oh, are we hurt? Poor little thing. But now Alex will take good care of you, alright?”
Yuki just stands there looking at the interaction with his hands to the sides, suddenly feeling too empty after so long of hanging desperately on to the tiny animal. But it’s incredibly adorable and endearing the way Alex keeps comforting it, as if it can actually understand what he’s saying, its tiny tail wiggling against the jacket when he manages to scratch a good spot behind his ears.
The puppy must sense that Alex is a good person, and Yuki may be a little dramatic most of the time, but he probably trusts the puppy more than himself. Especially if it’s about a cute guy talking with a high-pitched voice to an adorable animal in pain.
“Now Alex will take you to the other room and we’ll check everything, yeah?” He looks at Yuki then, eyeing him up and down, probably taking in his conditions.
Only then Yuki realizes what he must look like, with his hair flat over his head, raindrops still sliding down his nose, the simple white T-shirt he had been wearing under the jacket now completely soaked, tight against his chest. His shoes make a weird squelching sound when he takes a step forward, his socks clinging uncomfortably to his toes and his pants scratching against his probably already bruised knees.
Fuck, he wanted to wear them for work, there’s no way he’ll wash them in time.
“Uh, sorry?” He mumbles, painfully aware of the puddle he has formed under his feet. He grips at the hem of his T-shirt, uselessly trying to straighten it out and immediately regretting it when his palms leave sticky red handprints in their wakes. Yeah, no, there’s no way this is recoverable.
Alex doesn’t seem angry about it, and as his gaze falls to the stained fabric, he frowns, concerned.
“It’s the puppy’s” Yuki says, cringing at the feeling of blood against his skin.
Oh God, it’s the puppy’s blood. A puppy’s blood is staining his clothes and his hands and he’s going to puke, isn’t he? Or worse, what if this cute guy thinks he hurt it? What if this cute guy thinks he is an attempted murderer? A murderer of puppies?
Yuki is honestly afraid of his own shadow most of the time, and he still sleeps with his night light on when there’s too many thunders outside, but how can he convince Alex of that without embarrassing himself even further?
To his delight, Alex smiles at him, shaking his head with a twinge of fondness that makes Yuki’s cheeks feel incredibly warm for the way he’s still shivering from the cold. “Come on, then” Alex says, turning around “You can clean up and dry off in front of the radiator.”
Yuki doesn’t have to be told twice.

Kiridai if Kiridai were involved in agriculture
Britain edition because I know little to nothing about Japanese agriculture
Hanamiya Makoto
Large animal and equine vet
The type of vet who sells various prescription drugs under the counter (or, to be specific, from the boot of his car): everyone knows and no one calls him out on it, because cheaper drugs are cheaper drugs
There’s a rumour that he used to be a specialist small animal cardiologist abroad, best in the country, and only moved because he may or may not have made an ethically dubious decision that may or may not have resulted in his breaking criminal law
But he also has a great eye for spotting lameness that another vet would miss, and in general his diagnoses are never wrong, so livestock owners flock to him because one consultation almost always gets the job done, and equine owners flock to him because he always finds a problem to explain their paranoia
Yamazaki Hiroshi
Has a flock of sheep in the Uplands
I.e. he spends lambing season in sideways rain and gales, getting soaked to the skin and swearing that he’ll give up on sheep, and yet he never does and never will
Breeds for meat, but dreams of a world where he could breed primarily for wool and earn a living from it
Has a couple wethers living in his house full time - all were orphaned at birth and thus hand-reared by him, making him too attached to them to send them to slaughter
Also has a slightly deranged collie that still hasn’t quite figured out why it has to leave said wethers alone but herd all the other sheep
Names as many of his sheep as his memory can manage, even though he knows it just makes the goodbyes harder
Furuhashi Kojiro
Flower farmer - has some bee hives on the side, and grows seasonal vegetables, but his primary focus/income is cut flowers
Has a good 400 varieties of flowers (everything from Achillea to Weigela) growing on his land for commercial use, most of which he will cut and organise for wedding and hotel arrangements and bouquets
Also grows his own rose breeds (one purple to red climbing rose; one mostly white with hints of purple Damask rose) but he rarely, if ever, sells any of the progeny. They’re practically his children, after all - you don’t sell your children
Some of them will see the inside of rose shows, and the climbing rose has been planted at a rose garden, but otherwise they spend his days in his garden
Meanwhile, the other flowers and the foliage both get sold throughout the year, as does the honey and the vegetables (at the local village market), and, though he doesn’t love cutting them, he doesn’t miss them like he would the roses
Doesn’t use any insecticide or herbicide and very much judges flower farmers that do
If he’s not silently tending to his plants for hours on end, then he’s grumbling about the loss of insects, and if he’s not grumbling about the loss of insects, he’s frowning reading the latest reports on climate change
His plans for the future involve an exceptionally sharp pair of scissors and a Bonsai tree
Seto Kentato
Large animal vet
Tried small animal for a while, and then equine, but neither worked because he found the owners talked too much or ‘loved their animals too much’ (aka made them obese). Hence moving onto, and sticking with, large animal.
The farmers he works with know that he doesn’t like to talk too much, and can be brusque, but none of them care because he’s the best large animal vet in the area
Doesn’t particularly like cows but, for reasons unknown, cows really like him (and bulls despise him)
Can be found sleeping at the back of the clinic whenever he’s not on call
Thinking about getting some training and specialising in large zoo animals, for the added challenge - something about rhinos and elephants is calling his name
Hara Kazuya
He was a man child struggling with boredom and too much money for his own good, who therefore decided he’d try his hand at farming
Wasn’t initially sure what to farm - at one point, he was seriously considering snails - until he read that the ostrich industry had collapsed because no one could figure out how to keep them healthy in the UK. And he took that as a challenge.
Hence Hara, the ostrich farmer.
Went through a phase where he had his hair dyed half black and half white, to rep the ostriches
Keeps saying he’ll get a dangerous animal license, so he can get some pet zebras to continue with “the theme”… the mad* lad might just do it
He’s also the kind of owner to ask whether he can give his ostriches weed to help them chill out “because it works for people in the States”… it’s safe to say that his local vets avoid doing his call-outs as much as possible,
The ostriches like him though :)
The business is profitable, the animals are healthy so clearly he’s doing something right
*and by mad, I mean despicable. do not keep wild animals as pets.

tell me more about gravy he has my heart in his stinky paws
My lovely partner works as a vet tech at the local low cost spay and neuter clinic, and one of the main services they provide is the TNR program. Locals can trap and bring in ferals to be neutered and ear tipped for basically free.
Gravy came in with a bunch of other ferals and i recieved the following text
Tumblr media
I of course responded that we could just "foster" him (🤡). He was pretty skiddish when we brought him home, and the trapper claims that he has ptsd (from being trapped? Its unclear)
Tumblr media
We got the ok from the trapper to take him after he had been neutered and ear tipped. I thought he had some sort of abscess or infection in his mouth bc of the rancid smell (he does not, the vet thinks hes "just kind of smelly"). We were worried that the dogs would be too scary for him but uhhhh hes totally fine with them and the dogs have been exceptionally gentle with all the kitties i love them so much
Tumblr media
My partner has been looking to get a bougie pure bred cat for a while (looking at japanese bobtails) so we were prepared to take on a third cat but he has now become a permanent fixture so the bougie cat will have to wait.
Gravy and Grub (other stray thing we adopted bc she was getting into our trash and dragging it under the house) are best friends which really cemented the fact that he has to stay
Tumblr media
Now we have a stinky brown kitty

Villain Pet AU
In which most/all of the villains/villain groups in MHA have their own pets/mascots. @cans-of-beans and I created this in a wild discord convo. Beans, if there's anything important I missed/that you want to elaborate on please add it on
League of Villains: Monchan, naturally. In this AU, he has a longevity/immortality Quirk (so Tomura can't hurt him by accident) and One For All (which he got by accident, by licking up some of All Might's blood during his battle with AFO while All Might was thinking about a successor). There is much debate in the League over whether he's haunted, weird, or just a Very Smart Good Boy. This is because the vestiges (mostly Nana) use an Ouija board to communicate through Monchan. (It was Toga and Twice's idea.)
Shie Hassaikai, specifically Chisaki: Shi, aka Four, a black cat that Chisaki adopted at Pops' request two years pre canon. (Also my personal favorite and therefore the longest section here.) The conversation went a little like this:
Pops: You need to develop empathy and be more human. Maybe taking care of a pet will help.
Chisaki, used to Pops indirectly insulting him: Oh thank god, for a second I thought you were going to shove a whole child at me.
Pops: Haha, no, I don't trust you with a child.
(Eri is hanging out with her grandfather for now. It's a marginally better situation.)
Four has an intelligence Quirk. She can't naturally understand human language or get into deep philosophy (and she still acts and thinks like a cat), but she understands some things that normal cats don't (like that feet are a part of humans and not the enemy) and can communicate concrete ideas with symbols that Kai taught her.
Her name is Four/Shi because in Japanese both death and four can be pronounced 'shi,' making four an unlucky number. I feel like Chisaki would be the type of person to play on that superstition.
Chisaki loves this cat. So much so that he gets/sews clothes for her. He tried to make her wear shoes too, to keep her feet off the dirty floors, but she hated them because they kept her from using her claws. Also, there is definitely a cat-sized lab coat among the clothes she has.
Gentle Criminal and La Brava: You know the whole "Kiwi and his goth gf" thing? Those are the birds these two have. Gentle has the goth gf, whose name is Bronte--sometimes he'll call her Miss/Madame Bronte for fun. Brava's multicolor bf's name is Cariño(so), which is Spanish for sweetheart/kind/loving/gentle. The birds are in love, naturally, and they often fly out with cameras attached to scope out areas Gentle and Brava are interested in for their videos/heists.
The MLA/PFL: Neither of us have gotten far enough into the story to meet them, so we decided for fun that they had a goldfish with a mecha suit a la Megamind. (This is subject to review.)
(Bonus: Natsuo, in this AU, is a vet and works at a veterinary clinic that (somehow) all of the villains attend to for their pets. The clinic is the only neutral ground that all of them respect.)

hello again, legacy. thank you for the welcomes, but i regret to inform you that i am not new, and that this is merely eri ( she/they, 21+ ), lgcjiae & lgckiha’s typist, coming back for round two with my third muse. i am convinced though that this one, is going to be a keeper. funnily enough, i had intentions to bring liz from ive since december ‘22 — but then xg’s shooting star mv happened and my beloved lgcsomi got sidelined for lgcarisa. anyways, meet kato arisa, a japanese-american esfj scorpio from austin, texas. she still has elements of this said liz muse though, so it’s not a total loss. she’s a bit of a wild child, but i hope you come to love her as much as i do!
in eri fashion, i’m linking you to her profile. i am currently trying to work on some plots for arisa, but i’ve dropped some ideas beneath the cut that might help with plotting, along with her entire life story as a placeholder for her biography which i’m still working on too. but, if you’re interested in plotting with arisa, then please LIKE this post. i’ll post her tracker after this — off the top of my head i’ll be looking for threads with female trainees for the trainee mission. you can catch me on twitter @/metanoire and discord ( just ask for my handle ) if you find it easier to plot there, otherwise we can just plot in dms!
born kato arisa on november 20, 2002 ( 201102, see what i did there? ) in tokyo, japan to second time parents— her mother is a university level english and japanese teacher while her father is an equine veterinarian. she has one older brother, asahi ( born in ‘99, also born in tokyo ). lgcakio is arisa’s cousin ( akio’s mom was arisa’s mom’s sister ).
grew up living rather comfortably in a nice house on the outskirts of tokyo for the first eight years of her life. her father was able to operate his veterinarian clinic while her mother was able to teach at the university of tokyo. this left arisa and her brother to attend their cushy private school growing up.
when arisa was eight years old, an opportunity came up in the united states for arisa’s mother ( teaching japanese at a university, in contrast to the english she had been teaching ) — the katos relocated to austin, texas in the united states.
somewhere along here i should mention that growing up, arisa had an immense love & passion for animals, and in particular, horses — she began riding at around four or five years old at a riding school near her father’s veterinarian clinic. she is truly horse girl.
her earliest dream was pursuing veterinary science like her father and becoming an equine vet, however as arisa matured ( with her passions & interests ), she eventually decided she wanted to become an equestrian and represent either japan or the united states at an international level ( arisa was and still is a talented rider and horsewoman, both in terms of riding and handling horses )
once her and her family were settled in their new home and city, arisa got her own horse— whom she affectionately named maki. she began competing with him and the two of them were inseparable. when she wasn’t at school or studying, she was probably riding.
( tw animal death ) the reasons behind this out of character are a little cloudy, but maki got sick and unfortunately had to be put down, which devastated sixteen year old to the point of her quitting. she stopped riding. she convinced everyone else and herself that she no longer had any interest in horses, riding or competing.
essentially reinvented herself. got into makeup, fashion, beauty, skincare and fitness in hopes that she would find something that made her feel happy again. it didn’t work.
arisa coasted through the rest of her high school years until she graduated, and as she was no longer “interested” in becoming an equine vet and/or competing, she gave up on pursuing a tertiary education. instead, arisa packed up her life, deciding to chase what her parents deemed a shallow, unfulfilling dream in seoul, south korea.
present day — it’s been two years of arisa training at legacy entertainment.
fun facts.
extroverted, loves to socialise and gossip
speaks english & japanese fluently, can somewhat navigate a conversation in korean
comes across as fake and superficial, but is actually a really nice person
that being said, she’s 100% okay with telling someone how it is
she use to snowboard when visiting her cousins in sapporo ( wasn’t very good )
she additionally travelled to japan like two times a year when she was growing up
she stays fit with yoga and pilates
because eri is unable to write anything else bi-con
future model™
despite being said future model™ she can sing ( and she enjoys it )
but actually loathes the idea of being an idol
also sort of loathes the aesthetic she’s got going on and feels much more confident makeup-less and covered in mud ( but no one can know this )
goes horse riding religiously every sunday at a riding school outside of seoul
would be interested in competing again if legacy permitted it
quick plot ideas.
fellow english and/or japanese speakers ( arisa naturally gravitates towards those who speak the same language as her, not intentionally exactly but she loooves to talk so... )
patient korean speakers who are willing to bare with the horror that is arisa’s korean fluency and/or are willing to help her improve her language skills!
friends, enemies, flings?!? idk let’s plot!

I would like to share some happy news!
Tumblr media
Here's a new member the family! A girl budgie born in May of this year.
Honestly, this budgie was a surprise gift from my boss last month, but she had lost too much weight that she was hospitalized the same day before I could name her...She stayed in the vet for a week and after that, continued to visit the vet.And yesterday, finally finished our visit! During that time, i've been using a temporary name for her,Tory (meaning bird in Japanese(tori).I think this was cute too).
Tumblr media
Now that i have decided on her name,I drew this yesterday and took it to the vet.
Her name is Gizmo!
As you can see, the name is taken from the Gremlin Gizmo.because she screams when I put my hand near her, just like when Gizmo gets wet.
this doodle is now in clinical records file.

for the matchup (enhypen) — personality wise, im very reserved n quiet n prefer keeping to myself most of the time. my friend group is very small n tightknit + i dont like making many friends. ive been told by people that have met me that im intimidating and brutally honest. very much prefer staying home + i get drained p quickly when i go out, even if im having fun.
random facts, my favourite colors are green and black. i have 2 cats but have had multiple others in the past. im an artist; been posting my art on the net for years now n recently got back into writing fics for fun. i play videogames a lot & occasionally read here n there. oh also, ive been studying japanese for a few years now, which is fun. learning about animals & languages is fun. wanted to be a vet actually n trained at a clinic for a while, but also ive been trying to get a job at a cafe so! i hope it works soon. i hope this is good ;; – 🐞
i match you up with…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
niki!!
i could NOT decide between riki and heeseung oh my god. ultimately i decided to match you up with riki because you said you liked the color black and because you said you get drained easily (i see riki as really emotionally intelligent, and i think he’d recognize the signs of a dead social battery well). but hmmm i think you could just as well be matched up with heeseung.
i think riki would find your intimidating aura as really cool, and i think it would draw him to you. you’d have cozy gaming dates and get super competitive with one another and it’d be really funny haha. he’d also think it’s really cool that you worked at a clinic and ask you all kinds of questions about it. & if you got the job at a cafe (manifesting that you get it !!) he’d visit you all the time and make you make him drinks haha.
like i said earlier, i think riki is really emotionally intelligent and mature for his age, and so he’d make sure to respect your boundaries when it comes to going out and talking to people, etc. overall he’d be super caring and sweet!

Tokyo Babylon - CLAMP Premium Collection - Commentary Part 6
Previous Part First Part Next Part
Finally, we've come to the last chapter of volume 2 and I must say, as someone who learned Japanese AND ever lived in Japan, this chapter is the chapter I can relate the most. And of course, a display of Miss Sumeragi Hokuto's characterization in one whole chapter.
Without further ado, let's start!
Tumblr media
Like usual, this one will be quite long as well, haha. Anyway if someone noticed, the chapter was written in 1991!
So, we started the chapter by Hokuto walking at night. I want to ask why she was on the road when she is only 16 but then again, she probably was on her way home from Seishiro's vet clinic and that's the only way to explain why she was there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other girl being catcalled by boys: shivered in fear, running away directly Hokuto, who is born in wealthy Sumeragi family: Are you government worker? Do you have a public housing? Grave? Property accumulation savings? If you don't have it then just dream to even catcalling me.
Honestly Hokuto you are so funny and I'm so sorry to those men. But she isn't wrong; with her family status, Hokuto should marry a conglomerate instead (thus, her dream to become a proper housewife).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hokuto, sensing a girl in danger: My justice sense is tingling so let's beat those men.
That aside, actually, they used katakana for the words the woman said (even after this panel, though not every words). I take it that she probably spoke Japanese but didn't sound like a native, thus they differentiate the typing. I will talk about this more once the girl talked more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A display of Hokuto's strength. Pretty nice. That face kick is amazing. Sumeragi family taught her well and I'm so proud of her.
The two then ran away and escaped the scene and they hid in the alley. Hokuto asked the girl whether she is fine or not, and the girl nodded. She then said they will bother pretty girl at night like that. Since she didn't respond the her, Hokuto then asked.
Tumblr media
Hokuto: Can you speak... The girl: I know Japanese.
Here, you can see her panel in kanji, hiragana and katakana. All of them mixed into one line. This is like a little hell on Earth for anyone who learned Japanese but isn't skilled yet at reading katakana ;;
Anyway, the two were found out by the corpse and they ran away again. They went to a park and rested there. Hokuto bought the girl a drink and they talked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The girl then asked, why Hokuto helped her, an outsider (gaijin). I would like to use word "foreigner" here, but maybe I should explain the difference between gaijin and gaikokujin first.
Gaijin (外人) and gaikokujin (外国人) are used to describe who isn't Japanese people, means foreigner. However, Japan is a country who doesn't engage with other countries for so long (around 300 years I think?), and there is also stuff with World War. Their lack of engagement with other countries for a long period created a mindset that Japanese people and other people are different, thus, even after World War II, Japanese people didn't accept foreigners kindly. Gaijin is a term used to describe those who aren't Japanese people and this has a rude connotation. This term is used until economic bubble ended, I think? Nowadays they didn't use it anymore and mostly use gaikokujin.
Thus, the girl explained that she is a gaijin and it's probably strange for her to be helped by a Japanese girl like Hokuto, but Hokuto told her that she didn't know from what country she comes from, but since she belongs to a country, there is nothing like gaijin (or outsider). This means Hokuto thinks of word gaijin as its literal meaning, not the meaning the stereotype we are talking earlier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then the girl asked again why Hokuto never asked her about anything, and Hokuto said that she can't do anything about it even though she asked. She then said what she said is important to her and in her best interest. If she asked her, then it is rude on her side. Still, if she wants to talk, if she thinks it's better to talk when she happened to talk with someone else rather than not talking at all, then it's a different story.
This line is different than the translation I read, and for me, the line in Japanese is much kinder than the one in translation. Hokuto is pretty wise, and her lines in original text are wiser. I think Hokuto here said I won't push you to talk since I don't have the right to make you talk, but if you want to talk, I will listen to you earnestly. The translation was probably toned down that kindness, but it still had similar nuance and probably adapted to the country it targeted to.
Then the girl began to tell her story. She is working at a shop and that shop is called kyabakura (or hostess club) in Japanese. She is from a country across the sea, she has seven people in her family, her father is sick and her mother couldn't support her family alone, so she came to Tokyo to work. In her country, there are more people who need works than the number of work provided, thus she came to Tokyo. But she can't speak Japanese and when she was sitting in front of Shinjuku Station because she was hungry, someone called her and that's how she came in contact with her current job.
Tumblr media
Then Hokuto asked how she became fluent in Japanese (because honestly, her Japanese is actually pretty good despite the mix between hiragana, kanji and katakana) and she said the guests taught her. Hokuto was glad that the guests taught her standard Japanese.
She then continued by saying that there are guests who are kind, but many are scary ones. She thinks she will be fine and will work hard as long as she got paid. But she said she is afraid of police.
Tumblr media
Well, she came to Japan illegally and if she was found out, she will be deported back to her country. And realization hits---Hokuto you just kicked a cop's face LOL There is a raid in her club so she ran away, but she got caught. She knew that she should abide the rule and she is doing a wrong thing, but if she didn't earn money, then her family can't live.
She then talked about how Tokyo is a strange country, as long as she has money, she can have everything. But there are things that she could get in her country, but she couldn't get it here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She said the first thing is friends. She said she and her friends were poor, but when she decided to go to Japan, everyone cried for her. But if she died in Tokyo, she believes no one will cry for her...
And the second one is "smile", the title of this chapter. She then explained that in her country, if she smiled, her mother and friends will smile as well and feel happy. Now she must smile, but no one will see her smile inside that dark room.
Tumblr media
The the girl said, "When I come to Japan, I thought that as long as I can understand the words, I can overcome the wall between people. That's why I'm working hard studying. I'm studying hard so I can understand Japanese people."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The girl: But no matter how good my Japanese becomes, we, gaijin, will never understand Japanese people's heart. Even though we understand Japanese, I can't get friends or smile.
Oh no my heart is just broken for her...
Then the police caught up to them and Hokuto decided that she won't run away alone. Thus she decided to face them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she displayed the wealth of Sumeragi Family along with her own strength in the same time. While I cried for the lipstick she used as her writing (cries), this is the same person who told us that she can't use onmyojutsu. Well, since onmyoji dealt with spirits, Hokuto who can't see spirits probably wasn't qualified, but she could use spells as well and kicked asses. Way to go girl!
The two ran away and they went to the city again in ease, now they knocked down the police that targeted them. The girl asked why Hokuto helped her after she told her that it's her fault and those are police.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hokuto: It's because I want to be your friend. You probably thought it's a bother to me, but I want to be friends with you. Of course working along with police is a civilian's duty, but when it comes to friends, it's different matter.
Hokuto and her beautiful mind ;;
The girl told her that she is a gaijin and Hokuto told her that there's nothing like gaijin. Then the girl said she works in kyabakura,
Tumblr media
Hokuto: In this world, the hardest job is service industry. Nurses, teachers, idols, singers too. All services. If you don't understand how hard it is, then you aren't qualified to live.
Honestly I want to say "you don't have the right to live" at the bold line above, since in Japanese, the line gives that harsh nuance. I think Hokuto could say something that harsh when it comes to service industry is because she saw how devoted Subaru to his job that it costs him his time to study at school. And Subaru's work as an exorcist is one of service industries---he came here and there and always busy. Thus Hokuto understands how hard it must be for her as well, since she has an example right next to her.
Tumblr media
The girl asked if Hokuto took a pity on her, but Hokuto said it's rude if she pitied her when she just heard a bit of her long living years. Her life is her own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hokuto: Don't differentiate people by giving them titles like Japanese people or outsiders. You and I are the same human.
Hokuto then asked whether the girl is interested in her or not, and she said she does, then they cleared the first step. Then she will be her first friend in this Tokyo.
Since the girl cried, Hokuto told her to smile. She then explained that since she will be busy with her work, Hokuto will be worried for her. She will be worried if someone will bully her, or whether she feels afraid, or if she is crying. But if she remembers that her friend is always smiling, then it will ease her worry.
So she smiled.
Tumblr media
Honestly, her smile is so pretty. Oh my.
Tumblr media
And they ended the chapter with them introducing themselves to each other with a hug! The chapter ends!
Overall, this chapter is pretty well written and showed Hokuto's characterization very well. I will talk several points that I haven't talk above (since I'm too focused on the writings and Hokuto ;;).
First thing first, this chapter's message is the one Hokuto said close to the end, that "don't label someone with titles, since we are all the same human". This is coming from CLAMP who wrote this in 1991, and foreigners coming to Japan isn't as massive as it did now, so most of the time, people's image about foreigners are still a bit close-minded; at least that's how I studied. I was like, wow, CLAMP really wrote Tokyo Babylon to go against all the common senses Japanese people have at the time, and I can't stop awe-ing this series even more. The more I read about the stories, the more I was fascinated by how they were this brave to pick their own contemporary society issues and even tell their own opinion regarding that topic.
Second is, I understand the girl's feelings. Japanese people not being kind, or treating foreigners differently if they don't understand Japanese still happened. This is my own experience; at that time, I was saddened by something pretty personal and I went to convenience store to buy something. I went out of the queue line for a second (like really, maybe 3 seconds) to get a drink from the nearby fridge, and the line changed (because the ones behind me moved forward). I went back to the queue but an old man behind me thought I cut the line, so he was kinda mad and raised his voice on me. At first, I didn't know he was talking to me, and it was until he told me "don't you know Japanese!?" in higher tone made me snapped as well, so with me being down and such thing happened, I told him "I know!" and told him that I was queueing before the ones in front of me before. The ones in front of me testified my words and since I was kind of pissed off, I told the old man to move forward and after that he apologized to me. I felt bad for him now I'm sorry. The point is, you can see he knew I'm a foreigner and when he raised his voice about me not knowing Japanese, it's just pissed me off. Other than this, since I spoke better than my friends, I probably only had that one issue, yet my friends who started studying the language Japan was treated differently from me and it showed clearly in many occassions.
This issue is important since Japan right now is trying to hire more foreigners to their country. I realized that despite their condition, people with such mind would still exist, and like that panel when the girl was caught by the police (people ignoring her since it's not their business), it will be difficult to create an environment suitable for foreigners if they don't socialize it better. Of course, many are opened up, and one of them are the people I was working with before, and I was grateful that I can learn how Japanese people was, all the good and bad, that I can relate to this chapter.
Third is, Hokuto is right. People really differentiate people by labeling them even when we are same human. This is another personal experience, but the business I was working in right now is Japanese language education provider in my country. We have some partnership with Japanese company as well. One thing I remembered the most was someone in important position in the place I worked told me that, Japanese people is under us and we shouldn't be afraid of them. I remembered it clearly since it was our first meeting, and the first thing that comes into my mind was I realized that human who is treating another human as something else does exist. I was like thrown back to reality, and this chapter told me that no matter what job you are doing, no matter what nationality you have, in the end, you are a human and all humanity traits are exist within you. That my belief isn't wrong, and we should treat human the same. Yes I'm looking at you Seishiro.
Last but not least, I love how we are shown Hokuto's mindset early. She is pretty mature with her thoughts despite her childish behavior sometimes, and her views about the world around her is pretty, but not naive like her brother. She acknowledged that she did wrong as well for going against police, but she is caring and wanting to help someone in distress, thus she chose to help the girl. In this part, Hokuto is similar to her twin and I was moved by how similar they are in this volume---Subaru acknowledging he is different from the people around him, and he decided to embrace it so he can help Mitsuki going back to reality, while Hokuto acknowledging her making mistake for going against police, but she stay true to her grounds and helped the girl so she can live.
Thus, this ends my commentary for second volume! I'm waiting for the third and fourth volume to arrive, thus let's meet on the next part!

A Random Sunshine Encounter
[Remington "Espion" Harmonics & Julien "Rook" Nizan]
Summary: It's finally Espion's first visit to Viperstrike's base to get her gadgets improved! But Mira's not the only one overseeing her.
A/N: I promised myself that I wouldn't write above 1k today
When she entered Rainbow’s Greece Base, Reth noticed that Viperstrike’s base was surprisingly more high-tech than the other groups' tech labs. It’s not really that surprising for her, though. Many of Rainbow’s engineers and technicians came in and out to develop and research more technologies to make future operations easier.
Mira had ordered her to bring in her gadgets—Her motion-detecting knives that had been fucked up by a Certain Japanese Geek during the device evaluation—to look for a solution to the fragile casing.
…she couldn’t help marveling at the inner lab. It felt like she was again back in her old workshop in Nighthaven.
Before the young operator managed to get her grubby hands all over the pieces of machinery, however, she felt a pair of gloved hands grab her shoulder firmly and put enough pressure downwards to stop her from moving around.
“Wha—”
“Enchanté, Espion!” The figure looming over her suddenly spoke in a cheery tone. His light French accent reminded him of Gustave’s existence, making her head snap upwards to see who that was.
Messy dark chocolate hair in undercut style, five o’clock shadow on his well-defined jawline, dark blue eyes that sparkled like an excited golden retriever, and a smile that could bring joy and warmth to this cruel and cold world.
Oh, Jesus Christ, that’s a handsome man.
Maybe it was because the room was too cold or she suddenly developed a fever, but one of them was definitely the reason why her face reddened like crazy with nervous soft chitters coming out of her lips. Both palms tried to hide her current state.
The man was absolutely beaming, patting her light blonde hair while pulling her close to his tall body. “Mira told me that you’ll be joining us today, so I asked her to help assist you.” His tone was as bright as his personality. “My name is Julien Nizan, but you can call me Rook. I hope we can be good acquaintances!”
It didn’t help that her brain was short-circuited from the overwhelming amount of affection that he gave her, still struggling to say something.
He finally let her go after a while, finally snapping her from the overloading mind state. She almost immediately took multiple steps away, her face still looking bright red.
The sunshine expression faded slightly, eyes reflecting a sense of worry. “Sorry, did I overwhelm you?”
As much as she wanted to deny it, she did feel overwhelmed by his whole greetings.
And as Harry said during her last therapy session; be honest with people, or they will not know what their mistakes are.
She nodded slowly, avoiding eye contact. “...Sorry…” She muttered softly.
“It’s alright, mon ami.” Julien didn’t move an inch while keeping his warm tone, like a vet talking to a scared animal. “Take your time, okay? I can get Mira or Doc for you if you’d like.”
“It’s.” She paused, taking several deep breaths. Calm down, Reth. “I’m okay. I was just. Surprised. I’m no good to affection.” Her voice softened, now more like a whisper. “Gustave is scary. Don’t want to see him.”
“He’s a doctor. He’d take care of you.”
“Last time I saw him, he scolded me for being too rough in training and kept escaping his clinic while in his care.”
The taller operator grinned. “You’re not the only one.” He gave a wink that made the younger operator’s heart jump to her throat.
What the fuck. Oh my god. She shouldn’t be like this!!!
Reth whined out loud. Her frustration came out. Not because of the kind gent, no.
There’s a first time for everything. And it was the first time she felt like there were butterflies in her stomach, tickling her abdomen and trying to make her smile.
Julien’s happiness was infectious.
Currently, it’s infecting the young operator.
“Stop making me happy!!” She whined in protest, but her giggling state betrayed her.
“I can’t help it! Ton sourire est contagieux!”
The French accent that she’d once associated with Gustave’s fatherly scolding now made her heart thump like crazy. Julien’s bright and positive attitude cleared out the negative association of what had been imprinted in her mind.
Was that a bad thing? Nope!
“And what are you guys doing?”
Those fluffy feelings sunk back into the depths and managed to snap Reth out of the current state. Her cheeks were still tinted red from the blood rush.
Elena leaned on the doorframe of the lab entrance while crossing her arms, dark eyes glaring at Julien. “What did you do to our new recruit, cabrón? She’s a tomato now!”
Now it’s the French’s turn to be flustered, cheeks dusted in pink. “Non! I was introducing myself and accidentally got her overwhelmed a bit.”
The Spaniard turned her attention to Reth, raising her eyebrows. The American quickly nodded in response.
“Well,” Elena cracked her knuckles, and satisfying pops came out, “introduction’s over. Let’s get back to work, you two.”

As a fellow biology nerd I can pretty much see why you decided to become a virologist, but I'm curious about how you first came across the fascination from such puzzling beings. Feel free to ramble if ya wish! :) I would love some viruses and viral diseases facts
It was kind of an accident! I was working at a vet clinic with doctors that were great with their patients but not so great with their staff and I kinda just started applying everywhere. After I applied to the lab, they invited me in for an interview and actually asked me to apply for a different position instead…which I didn’t get at that point, but they did call me back the second another position opened up a few weeks later. I didn’t really know anything about viruses (and regularly googled “what even IS a virus” at work…😅) and felt a LOT of imposter’s syndrome when I first started. But I enjoyed the lab work and the more I researched and worked the more I came to love virology and infectious diseases. I started out working mostly with influenza, then I would run standard assays for the NIH to test antivirals against several viruses at different times like Zika, Usutu, Dengue, Japanese encephalitis virus, Enterovirus D68 and 71, RSV, etc. and I did some work with bovine (cow) viruses. And then when COVID hit, we all just pivoted. I don’t think drug sponsors sent in antivirals to test for months at the beginning 😂 I kinda started to miss Zika 😂 but working with human coronaviruses was pretty cool! We started doing testing against 5 human coronaviruses around that time (there are like 7 known ones with more suspected, but 2 don’t grow in cell culture—at least not very easily. So we just did the 5–two “common cold” coronaviruses and then MERS, SARS, and SARS-CoV-2)
I definitely miss lab work. I’ve enjoyed trying to stay on top of the research and I’m excited to eventually move onto more public health centered work (when I can find a job), but I’m constantly trying to find epidemiology teams that work primarily with viruses because I think virology will always have a big chunk of my heart—and it was honestly just kind of an accident that I ended up in the lab at all! I had another professor trying to recruit me to be his lab manager for an animal reproduction lab trying to learn how to prevent early embryonic death and I would have loved that but he took MONTHS to finally get the job figured out to try to offer it to me and by that point I decided I liked viruses so I stayed where I was. When covid hit, I realized I was already doing the work for a thesis anyway, so that’s when I applied for my master’s program. I went master’s of public health instead of master’s of science because the MPH program was mostly online and I knew there was a chance we’d have to move before I finished, but I think it was definitely the right choice!!

About 20 days twiddling my thumbs frustrated with my latest project, I decided to go ham with Yoosung's room and assume he got a just deserved upgrade to his PC setup. I already drew what is canonically in his room from the game, but because it's from an angle that isn't typically seen, I'm forced to use my imagination. I'm also giving him star shaped fairy lights for the corners of the ceiling, because I can do whatever I want!
Anyone have any ideas for what you think Yoosung might have in the other sides of his room? Or what he might have after getting into his relationship? One of these days, I'm just gonna 3D model his room so it can make things easier for drawing reference...
So far, I've given him a wall shelf to put stuff on. I'm considering giving him a big aquarium, *coughforthecatdefinitlynotjustbecauseIlovefishcough*, a cat tree for Lisa, maybe more cat accessories, maybe a shelf for collectables (I've seen it said that Yoosung enjoys shoujo manga, but I want to find a source. If so, I want to give him some shojo manga and other neat collectables.), I want to give him that signed gaming mouse to use (or perhaps.. would he be too afraid to use it? Still, I'm giving him a gaming mouse!!)
Speaking of cats! I was excited to find that Lisa pretty much lives at the vet clinic, I guess it's common in South Korea too then... Though, part of me is like Iwantlisaathome lol
☆ Cooking nonsense with Puku ☆
On a separate random note. All this time, I didn't fully realize my favorite instant noodles were pretty much a take on Jjamppong. The package always just called the noodles "Udon type noodles" and the flavor was "spicy seafood". I was just a lameass who for some reason thought Udon was mostly a Japanese noodle, not to mention this Korean/Chinese version is similar in texture to the typical Japanese Udon noodle, but quite a bit smaller in thickness. Not as thin as Ramen or Ramyun/Ramyeon, however.
orz All this time I just felt like I was bastardizing japanese udon, but apparently it's pretty common to make the noodles spicy in South Korea. I'm a spicy fanatic so I guess I now know what kind of noodle dish I tend to favor.
See, I was just but a lameo who just took Nongshim Neoguri Spicy Seafood instant "udon type noodles" and threw them into a pot, adding separate purple cabbage/bok choy/brussle sprouts/other cabbage, spinach, wakame seaweed/nori/knotted kombu, octopus tentacle parts, dehydrated mini shrimps, sometimes bacon for the fatty pork and oil taste, cut or chopped habanero/ghost/Carolina reaper peppers for extra heat, hot chili oil, more crushed red pepper, a bit of Fiesta "Very hot" cayenne pepper, course ground black pepper, shiitake/oyster mushrooms (I grew and dehydrated them myself ♥). Otherwise, really just whatever I feel like that I have lying around. If possible, I like to add fish cakes like narutos, soft boiled egg (Recently learned how to soy sauce marinate soft boiled eggs! yumyumyumyumyum), etc. Adding radishes and daikon is good too! Sometimes beansprouts, sometimes mukimame, sometimes cucumber slices, etc. I've bought frozen seafood variety bags and that will work for protein as well. I think it's actually pretty common for oyster to be used in jjamppong, too..
Anyway I've rattled enough about my abomination noodle soup I could eat forever if I could only eat one thing... >__>
