"We have found four burnt corpses on the edge of the forest near Harrenhal, my king."
Aemond looked tired to Grand Maester Orwyle, and suddenly he felt life coming into him again. Burnt bodies? Orwyle had spoken to the king, but his gaze was on Otto, who looked intently at the old man.
A Grand Maester was the king's personal maester, a learned man wise in history, science, and medicine who also provides counsel. Aemond had always wondered why Maester Orwyle had been given this position, a foolish man with too much misogynism in him. Of course, he saw it as Maester Orwyle did that Rhaenyra had no place on the Iron Throne, but only because he followed the laws of his ancestors and he knew that someone like his half-sister, who trampled on honor and decency, had no right to sit there and not because he hated women in general. There was no one he respected more than his mother.
"Daemon Targaryen has been sighted nearby aboard with his dragon Caraxes. It suggests he did it. The type of fire is definitely from a dragon."
Why would Daemon burn four unknown men? It seemed unnecessary and risky.
"Now the Rogue Prince is killing innocent people, too? His madness knows no end," says Jasper Wylde, Master of Laws. "This is an abomination."
"Maybe it was also Rhaenyra who gave the order?"Orwyle said again with a touch of poison in his words. "She's like Maegor, only with tits. Now that she can squeeze her bastard back to her breasts, there's no stopping her."
Aemond watched his mother raise her eyebrow disapprovingly and Orwyle shrink in his seat. "Forgive me, my words, Queen Alicent."
"For Rhaenyra the iron throne is more important than peace," Otto interrupted. "She has now proved that. She has refused every offer of peace from us and we expect her attack at any minute."
"An unsuitable candidate for the inheritance of Aegon I the Conqueror. It's good that her revered father came to his senses in the last few seconds," Lannister added, looking at Alicent contentedly. But his mother did not respond to his words and looked to her father.
"She has already declared war on us. She already did when she attacked our family."
"Barbaric."
"We must respond with fire and blood."
Aemond glanced at his brother. He stared around like it was none of his business. They hadn't much to say since their fight. Aegon seemed disinterested and once again Aemond realized how inappropriate Aegon seemed in this round. If he had been born as the firstborn, Rhaenyra would have been on her knees by now or, at best, already dead.
But his mother had insisted it had to be Aegon and Aemond understood. The Greens claimed that the firstborn son had to ascend to the throne, and what basis would their government have if he were to overthrow Aegon? It would have been best if he had brought Aegon to the ships, as the elder had begged him. In doing so, he would have spared Aegon the burden of the crown, to which he was no match, and he would have received what he was best suited for of all his siblings.
Aegon was weak.
"Ser Criston shows outstanding successes," reported Otto, alternately looking at Aegon and Aemond as if he heard his thoughts. "He's laying siege to Rook's rest right now. Ser Criston sent us a message. He's counting on the black attack."
He'd be ready. She should come. He would finally be able to show that he not only flew the oldest dragon but also the most powerful. He would crush their rebellion. He would know no mercy.
Ever since the attempted murder of Aegon's children, it's been willing to do anything. He would kill every single one of Rhaenyra's children, he would leave none to remain, as long as he traveled with Vhagar across the seven kingdoms until he had ensured that the last child of that bitch had died.
"My brother and I will ride on Sunfrye and Vhagar to Rook's rest," said Aemond, sensing Aegon's gaze upon him. Who was the king here? "We will not tolerate another black crime act."
He exchanged a glance with Aegon and his brother nodded.
"I agree," Aegon confirmed, and Aemond nodded contentedly.
"When they see you, they will return immediately, my king."
"Wouldn't it be advisable to inform Prince Daeron? Three dragons are better than two."
"My brother flew to Altsass this morning. Until we reach him, it won't be until the hour of the moon. Rhaenyra could attack at any time," Aegon contradicted and stood up. Suddenly he seemed determined and ready to fight. No sign of the weakling who had sat in his seat before.
"We're going to lure them into a case. We'll be close by, and if my sister attacks, we'll meet her on Sunfrye and Vhagar."
. . . . .
Rhaenyra had been expecting her lord husband back in the evening, and she felt a sense of relief when she could see Caraxes in the sky. Losing Daemon would be the downfall for them. Both as a personal loss and as a Queen. She stepped down the steps of Dragonstone, and went to the landing site where Daemon had already landed on Caraxes. She smiled and was about to greet her husband when she saw Daemon pulling out a girl. First she saw the brown curly hair, which was completely ruffled, then the torn dress and the wounds on her arms and legs. For a moment she looked like a young Alicent, and Rhaenyra inevitably remembered their childhood and friendship, but then the girl turned her head in her direction and Rhaenyra felt all the air leaving her body. The blood in her veins froze and it was suddenly hard to breathe.
Her eyes.
Rhaenyra stepped forward and grabbed her chain. The necklace she had given to herself and Aemma for her fourth name's day.
The engraving on the back is etched in forever, just like the meaning of the words.
In dreams we are united.
It couldn't have been.
The closer they got, the more frightening the resemblance Aemma and this strange girl shared. That's how Rhaenyra imagined her daughter. These eyes, these lips and their heart-shaped face.
Suddenly, a thousand memories flashed before her mind's eyes.
Aemma on her lap, cuddling herself asleep in her arms.
Aemma as she and her dragon Marax made a connection.
Aemma, who played with Lucerys and her older brother made her a dragon out of paper and Aemma proudly presented it to her mother.
Rhaenyra felt a tear roll over her cheek and she quickly wiped it away. Her hand trembled. Her eyes had to play a vicious game with her. She had longed for her daughter for too long, that she had longed to see her again, that now she suddenly thought a girl she had never seen before in her life was her daughter who thought she was dead.
"Mother," a familiar voice shouted behind her, and Rhaenyra broke away from the sight of the girl. She saw Lucerys coming towards her. He had his eyes on his mother, but then Rhaenyra watched Lucery's gaze wander to Daemon and he opened his eyes.
"Rose," he said, and Rhaenyra looked at her son in surprise.
"Rose? You know the girl?," Rhaenyra asked surprised.
Lucerys looked serious at her. "Yes," he nodded. "This is the girl I told you about. She is the one who reminds me of Aemma."
So she wasn't the only one? Your eyes didn't deceive you? Didn't play with their cruel games? Her son's words gave her relief, but at the same time they frightened her.Rhaenyra turned to Daemon to take another look at the girl to see that they were only a few steps away from her. The closer they came, the more Rhaenyra saw the resemblance. Her heart pounded wildly against her chest.
"My Queen," Daemon greeted her, pulling the girl roughly in front of him. She stumbled and almost flew there if the prince hadn't held her. Rhaenyra gagged about his rudeness.
The girl, Rose, as Lucerys had called her, looked up and her brown eyes stared straight at her. It was as if she looked into her soul and swallowed Rhaenyra. If it was Aemma, wouldn't she have to recognize her mother? That she wouldn't recognize Lucerys would be understandable due to the change his development brought about, but even if she had grown older, would she have to recognize her mother or not? But she saw only surprise and shock in her eyes, which gave Rhaenyra a disappointing sting.
"I brought us Aemond Targaryen's whore."
Rhaenyra looked surprised at Daemon, who looked at her content. Then she looked behind her, to Lucery's squeezing his lips. She had a connection to Aemond, to her brother, to her enemies? The girl who looked like Aemma, and who seemed to deceive both her and Lucerys, had a close connection to the Greens, their enemies?
What a cruel joke of the gods.
. . . . .
Larys had to admit that it wasn't easy not to be noticed when he heard about the four bodies burned. Since he was neither stupid nor naive, and none of the men he had hired had come to collect their payment, he knew that something must have gone wrong.
The burned bodies. The girl, Rose, was not among them. He had ordered four men, there were four bodies, and none of them had been a woman's body. He could only hope that the girl had died some other way. Perhaps the men had already killed the girl before the Rogue Prince burned her. Larys was not in any danger at the moment, he would not have any consequences to fear, no one knew of him as a client, but he hated the feeling that he had no certainty.
He'd have to move on quickly with his plan.
. . . . .
Aemond did not turn around when he heard a gentle knock on his door and how it was opened timidly. He watched himself in his mirror and straightened his clothes. Rose didn't say a word when she entered his chambers. Daeron had told him that she had woken up, but that she had been asleep when he had visited her. Aemond had not visited her, but the feeling of relief and gratitude had brought him to the Sept and made him pray to the gods. For the first time, she had granted him a wish. Rose was alive. He sacrificed everything for that. He had not forgotten his oath to the gods. He made a deal with them. He promised them that if they let Rose live, he would do his duty and not bring any further disgrace upon her. He'd give anything to keep her alive. He was a believing man, since he was a child, his mother had taken him to the Sept, and since then he was a god-fearing man.
And that was the deal. His happiness for Rose's life.
But he didn't expect it to be so hard for him. Yes, he hated the feeling of weakness that she caused in him, and he didn't want to let her go into his heart, convinced himself she didn't mean anything to him, but no matter how much he lied to himself, it didn't change how much she had crept into his heart.
But he had decided to put that connection behind him. That's why he lied to himself and everyone else, denied it and its value to him. Only the gods knew what Rose meant to him, and he had no intention of changing that. He knew that he had to be cruel to her now, so that she too would quickly believe that she had no meaning to him. He didn't want to hurt her, but her life was too worthless for him.
He would rather see her alive and happy at the side of another man than plunge her into her misfortune.
He felt a touch on his shoulder and looked into the mirror again, but the reflection that was facing him was not the one of the woman he had been expecting. He quickly turned around and grabbed the hand of Alys Rivers, who looked at him in fright.
"What are you doing to her?"He hissed and squeezed hard. Why was she in his room?
"I have been assigned to you, my prince," she replied, closing her eyes.
"Why? I have a maid."
Alys looked at him again. Her eyes were deep and invited to sink into it.
"Do you mean Rose?"
"Who else would I mean, woman?"
She annoyed him. Her innocence didn't work on him. He thought it was ridiculous that a woman her age would still play these games. Perhaps Rose was still too weak to fulfill her duties to him? Just because she was awake didn't mean she was ready to go back to work.
"But, my prince," began Alys, looking at him pityingly. "You don't know yet?"
"What should I know?"Aemond hissed and had to control herself not to break her wrist. What did she know that he didn't?
"Rose has decided to leave the Red Keep and King's Landing. She told me yesterday. She was going to say goodbye to you and ask permission, but her things are gone, which is why I thought you signed her release."
Aemond didn't know what to think for a moment.
His head was empty. His mouth is dry. Suddenly it was painful to breathe and it felt as if his intestines were contracting in his body. The blood rushed in his ears.
Rose was gone?
How could that be possible?
No, she wouldn't dare it.
She wouldn't dare to leave him. She wouldn't dare leave him without saying goodbye. She wouldn't betray him. She wouldn't. Never.
"She said she fears for her life here and doesn't want to be in danger anymore."
That's bullshit. She was in danger if he couldn't protect her. He would never have let her leave him. How dare she? She wouldn't dare, would she? She wouldn't leave him.
She was his. His.
Just because he decided he wanted to stay away from her didn't mean she wasn't his anymore. He would have taken care of her anyway. He would have accepted it even if she had chosen a man at some point, but it would have been a man he considered worthy.
Rose belonged to him and neither she nor anyone else could say otherwise.
"Are you all right, my prince?"Alys asked, and Aemond shook as she put her hand on his cheek. Her hand was soft and cold, but for Aemond it felt as if she were burning him. He ripped his eye open and pushed Alys away. She breathed in fright, and Aemond put his hand around her neck. The anger in him was unstoppable. Alys gasped in a panic and tried to release his hand from her throat.
"If you dare to touch me again," began Aemond, and for a moment he no longer recognized his own voice, so cold and strange, "then I will kill you, do you understand me?"
He meant it. He'd kill her and he wouldn't hesitate. He was exploding inside, ready to kill anyone who stood in his way.
Rose didn’t leave him.
She wouldn't.
She must have been around.
He would do his duty today to his family and to this kingdom, and then he would turn every single stone after her.
He would bring her back, even if he had to put her in chains.
Alys nodded and he saw the horror in her eyes.
She feared for her life. All right. She should. She would never again make the mistake of touching him without his consent. He snorted and pushed her away. She stumbled backwards, over her own feet, and Aemond looked down upon her. He didn't feel sorry for me. She was of no value to him.
Without paying any more attention to her, he turned around and left his chambers. Nobody dared to speak to him, and that was a good thing. He didn't know what he was capable of at that moment.
Arriving in the Dragonpit, Aegon was already waiting for him, who looked at him surprised.
"What happened?"He asked, irritated, but Aemond didn't say a word. He ignored his brother and went to Vhagar, who looked at him attentively. She felt his inner struggle. She knew exactly how he felt. He approached Vhagar, pressed his hand against her scaly skin and saw her right in her eye looking down on him.
"Let's kill them all today," he said in Valyrian, and Vhagar gave an approving sound.
Aemond looked up to her contentedly.
. . . . .
"We can use her against Aemond," Daemon suggested, and Rhaenyra felt an irritating sting in her heart. She had no connection to Rose, and yet it felt to her as if Daemon was proposing to sacrifice one of her children.
But Rose was not her daughter. Or ? No, that was impossible. Or ?
Rhaenyra didn't know what to think.
"Are you sure she means something to the prince?"Lord Corlys asked, and he had a good argument. "Just because she's supposedly sleeping with him-"
"She does."
"Just because she is sleeping with him," Corlys corrected with a raised eyebrow, "doesn't mean she's important to him."
"Well, I think we can only find out if we try."
"And how do you imagine that, Daemon?"
"We can-"
Daemon was interrupted by Ser Erryk, who pushed open the door without permission and bowed deeply to Rhaenyra. She saw the look he gave Lord Corlys, and she felt it had happened. Something terrible.
"A letter from the Crownlands, Rook's Rest, from Lady Staunton," Ser Erryk said, and Rhaenyra accepted the letter.
Her hands trembled. Rhaenys was there. Why didn't she get a message from her?
She looked at Lord Corlys who seem to think the same. She saw fear in his eyes.
She opened the letter and read the words she had feared.
Everything in her pulled together. She trembled as her gaze turned to Lord Corlys and she saw that he understood.
"No," he breathed, and his pain was clearly audible.
"I'm so sorry, Lord Corlys. My beloved cousin, Rhaenys Targaryen was killed fighting Aegon and Aemond," she had to pull herself together not to cry. She couldn't be weak. She was the Queen, the protector of the realm. She couldn't afford to be weak. It wasn't about her at that moment.
"Meley's head was taken to King's Landing. Just like Lord Staunton's head, beheaded for treason."
"And Rhaeny's?"Daemon asked, and she heard the anger in his voice. The hate. The same hatred she felt.
She looked at Corlys, who suddenly looked like a broken man. But he also looked at her, hope was still in his eyes, which she would destroy immediately.
"They left a body behind," her voice sounded strange. "Lady Staunton and her men are unsure, but a woman's body was found burned right next to her dragon Meleys."
That's exactly what Rhaenyra wanted to prevent. She didn't want anyone to die for her. And now this war had claimed its first victims. Rhaeny's had decided for her in spite of the disagreement with her. Rhaeny's died because of her.
And she didn't seem to be the only one to think so.
"It's your fault, Rhaenyra," Corlys sneered suddenly and she looked at him. Daemon also had his gaze fixed on him. "If you hadn't held back your children, Rhaenys wouldn't have flown alone. You sent her to her death."
Lord Staunton had asked for support when the Greens besieged him, but she had forbidden Jacaerys and Baela to join Rhaenys. She was scared. Unbearable fear. Lucerys had no dragon since Aemond attacked him and Rhaena was still dragonless. Rhaenyra was not willing to make the same mistake twice. She had tried to stop Rhaenys from flying there, she wanted to send men on foot, but Rhaenys had made it clear that it would be foolish to sacrifice men if you had a dragon that could quickly fix the problem.
So she let Rhaenys fly alone.
And now Rhaenys was dead.
Corlys stood up full of hatred, anger and sadness in his eyes and Daemon walked towards him, but Rhaenyra held him back. "No," she said quietly, shaking her head. She watched Lord Corlys leave the room and Ser Erryk followed him silently.
"It's not your fault," Daemon said to her. "You didn't force her to fly there."
"But I let her fly alone."
"It was her own decision."
Rhaenyra nodded. It wasn't just a personal loss for her. It was also a great loss for the blacks. Rhaenys had been a powerful opponent. She had been a smart woman, with a strong dragon, and now she had lost both. She looked in fear at the table on which the whole kingdoms had been drawn. She grabbed Rhaeny's figure and took it off the table.
She watched it in her hand.
She knew it wouldn't be the last loss she'd have to endure.
She wondered when this war would end, knowing that it was only the beginning.
"I want revenge," Rhaenyra said, turning to Daemon. "I want to punish them for everything. Every single one of them."
Daemon nodded and approached her. He grabbed her hand and opened it. He looked at the figure that symbolized Rhaenys and Meleys. He knew how to hide it, but she saw the grief in his eyes. He, too, had been wounded by her death. And worst of all, Rhaenys died believing her two children were dead. Rhaenyra could never forgive herself.
"Let's execute the girl," Daemon said suddenly, and Rhaenyra looked at him in surprise.
"What?"
"Let us execute her and send her head to Aemond. I want him to know we'll pay him back twice for every loss. This is just the beginning, Rhaenyra."
Rhaenyra knew that Daemon's suggestion made sense. She probably would have agreed immediately if there wasn't an inner struggle raging inside her, a struggle of feelings. Something in her told her it was a mistake to kill the girl, but she wondered if it was just the wish that Rose could be someone she probably wasn't, or the certainty that she would kill an innocent girl.

hey hi. is it cool to ask about how the publishing stuff is going? you're one of my fave writers and i'm curious but I don't wanna like, pry.
You have impeccable timing, anon! If you want more content from me, and an update on the publishing situation, I'm on the cusp of sending the draft of my latest project to my agent. But first...~*I need beta readers*~
Tumblr media
The final voyage of the terraforming ship Persephone left Will Carrow with a hole in his head and no memory of his life before the mission’s bloody end. Now he works a dead end security job on the barren world where the friends and family he doesn’t remember tore each other apart, determined to find out why. His boyfriend, fellow Persephone survivor Jasper, says aliens made them do it, but obviously no one believes him. Carrow barely believes Jasper’s stories of the funny, precocious young man he used to be.
When two colonists are murdered in a grizzly echo of the Persephone deaths, Carrow is furious. And elated. It’s the justification he needs to search the Persephone’s rotting hulk for answers. He’s prepared for the corpses. He probably should have been prepared for the alien parasites that infest them. He’s not prepared for the truth; he can’t remember his life before the massacre because it was never his. He’s not Will Carrow, he’s the parasite that killed him.
While Carrow - or the thing still using his name - is horrified to realise he’s a monster wearing his victim’s corpse, guilt won’t bring back his host. All he can do now is keep his loved ones from suffering the same fate, and he’s going to destroy every last parasite to do it. Himself included.
But not everyone shares Carrow’s priorities. There’s money to be made from the alien technology he represents, and money to be lost if he derails the terraforming effort. And there’s Jasper, who refuses to believe that Carrow isn’t the man he loves. No matter what it costs, no matter what Carrow has become, Jasper is determined to save him from himself.
Out of the Dead Land is a 92,000-word dual-PoV Science Fiction novel that asks ‘What if The Thing was a love story?’ It combines the exploration of human identity in Ann Leckie’s Translation State with the romantic chemistry of Everina Maxwell’s Ocean’s Echo, set against the tense horror of Caitlin Starling’s The Luminous Dead.
Content Warnings: Implied/referenced/attempted suicide, stigmatisation of mental illness, body horror and, while I'm a terrible judge, the consensus is there are graphic depictions of violence. If you've read my original work on AO3, you'll know what to expect on that front.
What are you expecting of a beta? You can give feedback however you want; via tracked changes in the manuscript, answering some book report questions, writing a small essay, or sending a single DM telling me the ending sucked and refusing to elaborate further. Only request is that you get through it quickly-ish (or if you're going to dnf then commit to dnfing and tell me where you gave up, that's still valuable info) because I promised to send this to my agent at the end of Feb and lol.
How do I sign up? DM me or, if you don't have an account, send me an anon with an alternative means of contact.
Didn't Stephenie Myer already do an alien parasite romance? Yeah. More tentacles in mine, though.

Neo-Colonialism In The 100
I’d like to preface this by saying that I feel the Season 1 and 2 arcs are not implicitly in support of a colonialist “we have the right to take whatever exists here” narrative.
When the dropship lands, the young adults and teenagers (it’s hard to come up with one classification since we’ve got Bellamy at 23 all the way to Charlotte who might be 13 or so) don’t appear to be immediately targeted until they cross a river and Jasper unwisely (in retrospect, obviously) holds up a Mount Weather sign and yells loudly in what is obviously gonasleng.
Even afterwards, as wariness rises, the delinquents only secure for themselves a defensive space and Clarke tries to seek peace even though there are repeated incidents that make it harder to get. And Anya seems amenable to at least trying to negotiate something until Jasper’s itchy trigger finger ends up tilting the balance to war.
And even in the aftermath, the kids decide to take Lincoln’s advice and leave for a possibly more hospitable area - hardly die-hard colonialists intent on wiping out the indigenous population.
The Ark landing can be argued as the best of a set of essentially not-great alternatives, and luckily, none of the Ark fragments landed in populated areas. It could be argued justifiably that the Ark landing could have been better controlled to aim at a known uninhabited area.
The essential thrust of Season 2 is the discovery of a common threat amid efforts by Lexa and Kane, as well as Clarke, to secure a workable peace everybody can live with.
However, in Season 3, explicitly colonialist narratives begin to be articulated, which through the “lens” of the camera we the audience are asked to sympathize with even though there is no internal canon support for the allegations made by Pike and Bellamy. In addition, aggression and expansionism with no effort to seek peaceful resolutions are screaming neon bright signs of colonialist worldviews.
Even in Season 4, there are colonialist overtones in the meta-narrative surrounding the finale. It has been reported that S4 was intended to contain explicit S1 callbacks and that S5 is in a sense a “reboot” of the series.
What that effectively means is that all grounder identities have been essentially erased because the bunker, for all intents and purposes, might as well be dead; all the work that over a thousand people have put in has been for nothing. There’s just Nightblood Clarke defending her small patch of Earth against unfamiliar intruders.

"Heya!! I remember you said i could ask you for help when i uhm uh needed it haha, so uhm i wondering if you had any recommendations on foods too feed Chilli, my little Cyndaquil haha, i just thought because you have Jasper(?) you're Typhlosion, that maybe you knew some foods that he likes i could possibly try with Chilli??"
Yes yes of course I can help! Jasper is not a very picky eater due to his past, but he does have some favorites + foods i reccomend to anyone raising cyndaquil/fire types!
Unlike Typhlosion, cyndaquil are insectivores/omnivores above all else. They usally munch on smaller bug pokemon or berries, nuts, and roots! Though, i know feeding your pal bug type pokemon isnt always something us as trainers can stomach, so i recommend insectivore pokemon food!
In addition to this, it takes a lot out of a cyndaquil to light the fire on its back! Lots of energy is needed, so i recommend lots and lots of sugar for snacks throughout the day! Their metabolism is pretty high, so frequent snacks arent a bad way to recover from using a lot of fire! I definitely recommend pecha berries as a sweet treat! Theyre packed full of sucrose, which is a fire types best friend, as sucrose is a primary compound that is easily flammable. Other options are poffins ,pokepuffs, or pokeblocks, though i do recommend sweet berries above all else as theyre less processed and you can control what chili is eating!
Another alternative to sucrose is oil. Nuts and seeds are already a standard in wild cyndaquil diet, but nobody really realizes how many good oils are in them, both for humans and pokemon! Raw sunflora and seedot seeds are a great way to fuel your cyndaquils back fire as well!
Again, as stated earlier Jasper is not a very picky pokemon. He is fine eating whatever is handed to him as long as its not poison, but he does have some particular favorite treats!
I noticed he really enjoys eating eggs? I wasnt expecting it, but it makes sense! Theyre packed full of protein and can be prepared in various ways. Some cyndaquil have also been reported to eat eggs in the wild, so if you can get your hands on some standard unfertilized torchic eggs, maybe crack one into Chili’s pokemon food along with some cut up sweet berries or nuts!

Pokémon Reborn Screenshot Let's Play: Chapter 14
Tumblr media
Oooh it’s a great day today, folks! Have you noticed this latest part hasn’t taken a century to be released? That’s because the new way of taking screenshots has worked…relatively well!
After doing some searching around, I was made aware of the program PicPick, which (among other features) acts as a way to take screenshots, either of your whole screen or of a specific active window or what-have-you. Heck, you can even assign certain hotkeys to those functions so you can take screenshots without needing the program open!
It…wasn’t entirely a smooth setup, admittedly. While I was trying to set up the hotkeys the way I wanted (by default, it’s Alt + PrintScreen, which won’t work for me because Alt in Reborn is the speed-up key), I kept getting a specific error that seemed to imply the issue was OneDrive or Dropbox (the former for me, since I don’t have Dropbox) hijacking the PrintScreen key, which seemed to be confirmed by several Google searches. However, after nearly two hours of various fixes, I was at my wit’s end and just hopped on a Discord call with some friends so I had people to actually talk to.
And it was at that point that one such friend saw the error and pointed out an alternative that I hadn’t considered. See, I had unassigned keys to all but the “screenshot active window” function because I was like “well I’m not gonna use those so…” However, he suggested that all the functions needed to be assigned hotkeys in order for things to work. So I went back and fixed that, and lo and behold…yeah, that was the problem, OneDrive had nothing to do with it.
I had planned to start the play session at 1 PM that day. I actually started at about 3 PM. All of this because I wanted to release these chapters faster and take better screenshots. Be grateful for…at least five seconds.
Now, with that story out of the way, onto the actual content. And that starts with a recap of the events of the last chapter!
Xera continues battling her way through the Onyx Trainers’ School on her way to Florinia and the Gym, as well as answering quiz questions, which is another requirement for anyone looking to challenge Florinia.
In front of the door to the Gym, Xera encounters Fern once again. He insists that she’s only gotten this far because of “luck and pity,” then gives her one last chance to give up and go home. She refuses, and the two engage in a battle.
Xera is able to defeat Fern, to the latter’s frustration. Fern concludes Xera having a Badge is the difference between them, and decides to take on the Reborn League himself in order to surpass her.
After Fern departs, Xera is finally able to enter the Gym, where she goes on to challenge Head Instructor Florinia and her desert-themed Grass team at last.
After a battle of wits and Field Effects, Xera emerges victorious, earning her second Gym Badge: the Canopy Badge.
Soon after the battle, Amaria enters the arena with a report for Florinia. Apparently, Borealis was recently seen around the Beryl Ward; as such, it’s highly likely that is where Victoria is being held captive.
According to Florinia, both the Jasper and Beryl Wards are also experiencing rampaging plants like what happened in Obsidia Ward, except on a more widespread and severe scale.
Because Xera is the only one who has both taken down a PULSE machine and seen Borealis, Florinia enlists her as the person to investigate these incidents. To help with this, Florinia installs a new app onto Xera’s PokéGear: the PULSE Dex, which acts as a PokéDex for PULSE-modified Pokémon.
While the OTS students take notice of Amaria’s arrival and begin growing eager for a battle or demonstration from a celebrity Gym Leader, Florinia urges Xera to get going as she prepares to make arrangements for Xera’s entry into Jasper Ward, through which she can then reach Beryl.
So that’s what the next plot hook is- traveling into the Jasper and Beryl Wards, with three main objectives: take out the PULSEs, track down Borealis, and rescue Victoria. Xera’s got two Gym Badges by now, so- what could go wrong? Nothing? Everything? With my luck, it could go either way, but we won’t find out just staying on the intro post, so- here we go!

thank you so much! ok, apologies if some of these questions seem basic - again, i've tried to understand as much as i can by searching online. SO, a few that come to mind are: i guess different frequencies are used for ham radio communication vs. broadcast. lots of sources emphasize that there's a big difference between ham radio and broadcast. is there no overlap between the two, like, technically or socially? i know you're not supposed to use amateur radio for commercial purposes, so a lot of the radio events, broadcasts, activities, etc that i'm familiar with from listening to commercial radio probably aren't options.
another question: what are nets like?
on a slightly different note: if a person is listening in on an amateur radio conversation, but not speaking, can others on that frequency tell they're listening? how?
Aaalright, I had to take a break because of painful headaches and also meetings with my ARES group (ARES stands for Amateur Radio Emergency Service, for those of y'all who aren't aware).
Please notice: I came into amateur radio through ARES, so my personal experiences with amateur radio are colored through that lens.
Also, I apologize for this whole ass essay.
Ham Radio VS Broadcast
Technically: There is no difference. In an unlocked radio (which is becoming a rare hot ticket item), you can literally go from listening to FM radio to scooting over a few numbers and talking to Brazil or Portugal.
Legally: We're not supposed to do that because the FCC says not to, and the FCC is not a government entity to take lightly. Even the Joker would fear the FCC. We have to behave ourselves. We're not even allowed to swear on the air waves :(
Socially: Possibly the biggest divide BECAUSE of the legal part. With the exception of people who work for professional radio stations who also happen to have amateur radio licenses, there's no overlap between us.
Amateur Radio Nets
Counterquestion: What sort of net are we talking about? A roundtable or ragchew? A weekly ARES net? An emergency net? Considering how niche emergency service-based amateur radio is, I'm going to assume you mean a roundtable, but feel free to come back for the other two that I know more about.
There are two ways to run a roundtable or ragchew net:
Everyone who's involved will check in at the beginning of the net, and the net control operator will direct it around the circle in order.
Everyone will check in at one point during the net and give their input. They will not be revisited unless they purposefully check back in, which is usually done by transmitting and saying the word "recheck".
During any and all nets, anyone actively participating MUST transmit their callsign and identify themselves every ten minutes from when they first check in. The exception is during emergency nets, but we won't get into that just yet. Typically, all you have to do is give your callsign across the radio again.
If you have questions about callsigns specifically, feel free to ask about those, because there's some nuance~ there that most people miss.
Lurkers
Unless they have actively checked in on a net, you cannot tell who's listening on the radio. We always assume that someone is listening, and that that someone will turn and report us to the FCC immediately if we mess something up.
So we won't be treating radio transmissions as some secret alternative to phone calls or text messages. Sorry to all would-be amateur radio spies out there.
Hopefully this answered some of your questions! Feel free to ask any more as needed!
~Jasper

My headcanon for the Cullens if they were the Bridge Crew/Senior Staff of a Starfleet vessel. (We're going with TOS division colors here, because Carlisle would look terrible in red TNG Era pips tho)
The Crew of the USS Olympic (NCC-10505)
🌟🌟🌟🌟🟨
Captain Carlisle Cullen - Triple C among the Cadets. A legend with Kirk's good looks, Picard's strong ethics and Pike's comforting charm (and Pike's good looks and Pike's ethics). Came up through the Medical division, was tipped for Head of Starfleet Medical but was too dedicated to his ship and crew. Misses being a doctor though.
🌟🌟🌟🟦
Commander Esme A. Platt, First Officer and Ship's Counselor (she's Carlisle's number one)
🌟🌟⭐️ 🟥
Lt. Commander Rosalie Hale, Chief Engineer and second officer
🌟🌟⭐️🟨
Lt. Commander Jasper Whitlock, Chief Tactical Officer
🌟🌟🟥
Lieutentant Emmett McCarty, Chief Security Officer
🌟🌟🟥
Lieutentant Mary Alice Brandon, Ops
🌟⭐️🟨
Lt. Jr. Grade Edward Anthony Masen, Helmsman
🌟🟦
Ensign Isabella Swan, Science Officer
Alternatively you could make Esme the Captain and Carlisle the Chief Medical officer, But I don't think Carlisle would look that good in Blue/turquoise
Also I originally had Bella designated as "Random Bridge Ensign/Redshirt?" But I wanted to put her in a science position since she looks so good in blue and she's such a wiz at Biology apparently.
Yessss love all these. I also see Carlisle as the reluctant leader who misses being a CMO. He's always finding reasons to wander into Sickbay and they have to keep finding polite reasons to kick him out.
Esme for the ship's counselor, absolutely. There's a longstanding joke on the bridge that she's actually the one in charge (she's half Orion).
I have Edward as the first officer (a little older I guess). He used to be in security but he got a couple battlefield promotions during the Dominion War. Carlisle saved his life during one of those battles and he saved Carlisle's life in the other. He demonstrated a unique talent for "reading" their opponents during negotiations and standoffs. Carlisle nudged him onto a command career path and he excelled despite his youth. No one will play poker with him, though. He's Bajoran—the Dominion War was a particularly difficult time for him because he felt so torn about remaining Starfleet vs resigning so he could join the resistance at home. He's still not sure he made the right decision.
Agreed, Rosalie is the Chief Engineer and Second Officer. She's bitter about Edward's promotion and feels that Carlisle has passed her over, but she's a killer engineer and even she has to admit she doesn't want to be on the bridge. Especially since she had a hand in designing the Olympic's warp drive.
Emmett is the helmsman. He's an NCO and damn proud of it. He and Rosalie served on the Olympic for almost a full year before they said two words to each other, and those first words were shouts after Emmett executed a particularly reckless maneuver (a.k.a. "saved the ship") in an asteroid field that damaged the port nacelle. They were married less than two months later. Tom and B'Elanna have nothing on these two for inappropriate PDA in various parts of the ship.
Alice at Ops, I love it! That's so perfect. She's that character who always comes up with bizarre ideas for how to modify their usual scans to pick up the subtlest anomaly.
And yes, Jasper at Tactical. But he also works for Section 31—he's been trying to get out for years, but they're not about to let a Betazoid go. He might be willing to jeopardize his own career (they have enough dirt on his younger, stupider days to guarantee a court martial), but their latest threat included a polite mention of Alice's history with the Maki under an assumed name. So that's that. Jasper reports directly to Admiral Aro.
My Bella is a civilian; she just came to the Olympic as a new teacher. She's crossed paths with the brooding, handsome first officer but they haven't spoken yet. It took her two weeks to stop getting lost in the corridors (she refuses to ask the computer for directions).

Faye Wong: 'Words often fail me when I talk' (1995)
The singer, who performs here tonight, says she expresses herself better through music.
The 26-year-old Hong Kong based star has become the fastest rising pop phenomenon in the Chinese music industry.
Tonight and tomorrow, Singaporeans will be able to catch Faye Wong's first concerts here at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
With brisk sales for tickets to Wong's two-day concert being reported by Jasper Production, it is ironic that the Beijing-born singer, who has won over most of the region and all of Hong Kong with her silky voice and seamless, emotive singing, once claimed she did not have the confidence of peers like Anita Mui and Sally Yeh to stage a concert of her own.
And yet, her debut in Singapore follows a series of sell-out concerts in Hong Kong, which the organizer had to extend from the planned 10 to 15, and later to 18.
Among the almost 200,000 people who caught her show in the British territory, were peers such as singers Alan Tam, Andy Lau, Kenny Bee, Lau Sung Yan, and other star celebrities.
But Faye Wong who?
For those not yet familiar with the singer whom industry pundits are touting as the next Sally Yeh, the 26-year-old Hong Kong-based star has become the fastest rising pop phenomenon in the Chinese music industry. All in a mere five years.
Today, she is a household name in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Malaysia and Singapore. Mention "Faye" and images of a doll-like face framed by outrageous wigs come to mind.
Though born and bred in Beijing, Wong's secret is that unlike most of her peers, she is not your typical Chinese pop singer. She has manged to gather a large following among the young, old and even the English-educated Chinese.
Part of her uniqueness is that while Wong admits to drawing inspiration from Western singers such as The Cranberries, Sinead O'Connor, Whitney Houston, and Cocteau Twins, the more popular she gets, the more individualistic and alternative the singer becomes.
Her unconventional dressing and nonchalant attitude often draw extreme reactions from fans - you either love it or hate it.
Besides wigs, she has appeared in see-through outfits on variety shows and clothes worn inside out à la Madonna.
At the 93.3 FM Hit Awards presentation at the Singapore Indoor Stadium last September, she arrived in a pair of white flip-flops.
On a phone interview with Life! from Hong Kong, where Wong was recording, her public relations officer quoted the star as saying: "I do not really give much thought to how I mix and match my clothes. I dress according to my moods. It is not a publicity ploy on my part."
Yet her avant-garde image has certainly spawned copy cats from stars like Sammi Cheng to Shirley Kwan, to even Tony Leung Chiu Wai.
This is a far cry from when she was just an unknown singer dressed in tacky shirts and jackets, until she took a one-year hiatus in New York three years ago, and came back a totally different woman.
Confidence, character, coolness - that just about sums up Faye Wong, especially the latter quality which is a sore point with the Chinese press. Her answers to questions are often short and curt.
Most of the time, Wong would have you believe that she would rather open her mouth to sing than to talk.
But when asked about her cold and arrogant attitude, the singer says that she freezes up every time when faced with unfamiliar people and places.
"I'm better at communicating through my songs than in public speaking," she once told a Hong Kong magazine. "Words often fail me when I talk."
But no matter, she speaks her own mind and her care-less attitude is exactly what keeps her followers intrigued, and radio stations giving her recent hits, such as 'I Am Willing' and 'Sky' frequent airplay.
These songs will be heard once again tonight and tomorrow live in a show that Wong has promised over the phone will be the same format as her Hong Kong shows.
Translated, this means you can expect great singing, but do not expect her to make many costume changes or small talk.
Even her boyfriend, China rocker Dou Wei, who guest stars in the concerts, will provide just music accompaniment. In Hong Kong, he played the flute.
As the star speaks her mind: "It is not a wild carnival, but a music show."
