while making longer posts that require a lot of screenshots kinda sucks, i otherwise really like these devlogs. they give me an opportunity to ramble about stupid bullshit that no-one else cares about. they also give me an opportunity to give context to my more... contextless posts.

for instance, last week, i posted this image, simply captioned 'woops':

i tagged this with "cornbread's texture fixer", since it was an issue in that pack specifically, but explained nothing else.

to clarify, this was not an issue with the current public version of the pack (Beta 5) like the mossy cobblestone walls are, but rather, an issue with last week's development version.

in vanilla, dogs are off center. this is something that had been brought to my attention via youtube video a few days prior, and so i shifted the model over a pixel to center it, making the amateur mistake of assuming dog armor would come with. this week, i have shifted over dog armor so that it is not visibly misaligned when Beta 6 releases.

also the lead attachment point but no-one would have noticed that anyway.

as for the rest of this week's progress, the first thing i did was make pale oak hanging signs use the stripped log texture for particles, like this pack does with other hanging signs. i did not intend to wait for the third week of Beta 6's development to fix this. i simply forgot they were in the game.

speaking of pale oak hanging signs, has anyone ever noticed that pale oak regular signs look really bad on bedrock edition??

one of the colors is just... straight up not the right one.

anyway, i've replaced it with the java edition texture, so it's fine now.

books and enchanted books have their rarities swapped in vanilla. like, i get that i'm really stretching the premise of a pack called "cornbread's texture fixer", but like... come on mojang. it's been fucked since 1.21.30!

the current line in the changelog for this reads "Managed to fix the rarities of Books and Enchanted Books, with literally negative help from bedrock.dev. Thanks for lying, y'all." which i will probably make less mean.

by which i mean, i'll make it Even less mean. earlier in the week it called them fuckasses.

fun fact! enchanted books ignore the normal rarity rules, both in terms of being uncommon instead of rare and also in the fact that they do not change rarity depending on whether or not they have enchantments.

the button for expanding and contracting the sidebar in the dressing room and marketplace is misaligned. i've fixed it, which is a thing i can do because the sidebar is stored on a different file than the rest of the dressing room.

the texture is also misscaled (like everything else in this game), but it looks comically small when i try to fix it, so i'm not sure what exactly i want to do about it. not like it's noticeable at 3x UI scale anyway.

aaaaand that's it for this week. i wanted to do more, but everything else i can think to fix would be really annoying.

i think, apart from all the parts of the pack that denote which version it is, Beta 6 is done now. should come out either tomorrow or maybe the day after if i'm tired.

i've seen a lot of connections between death patterns in the life series but i haven't seen anything about how in both seasons mumbo was in he died almost immediately after jimmy and to the same thing as him. both being killed by grian in last life and both being killed by etho's dishwasher (the warden one, not the magma cube /lhj) in secret life.

the reason i don't see it mentioned is because it's not something that can mean anything storywise but it's still a fun detail i noticed

Poll finished. Tagging @aromanticsky (wasn't sure whether or not to do so because I didn't really explicitly say what liking the post before the poll finished would do, but you get a bunch of rambling about a creation of mine). Consensus kinda got it, depending on which of the two winning options you judge consensus to be. The short of it is that Char was into Undertale at some point in their life and does question their humanity during Do While, but they didn't get a CS degree before the Advent.

Gushing about Watsonian and Doylist explanations below the cut

For the Watsonian explanations for each of these, or rather, the explanation for each of these in universe, it follows as so:

Char questions their humanity during the events of the main comic because they're part machine, once fully human but debatably human now. Other identities they've held since before the modification (e.g. aromantic, autistic, nb, furry) play some role in their disconnect from humanity as they've experienced it, but the modification feels too different (never mind that the identity crisis is happening in the middle of a time loop after a memory wipe).

Char being into Undertale at some point in their life isn't that remarkable except for the name they've picked for themselves and them playing a flower in a ttrpg once. Char as a name has some overlap with Chara, the default name given to the fallen human in Undertale, in that both are shortened forms of the word character. Char is also a primitive type in the programming language Java, which ties some into the next point...

Char was planning on getting a CS degree after high school, but due to not getting into the program initially at their university of choice, their passion for it faltered and they ended up getting a math degree instead (which is also kind of close to CS, in my opinion).

The Doylist explanations, or the "why did the author make this decision" explanations, aren't as exciting. Char's part machine because of one scenario where I cornered this undeveloped character into an inescapable situation involving trying (and failing) to stall a generic rogue AI with a paradox, and the question came up of "oh, I want to do this scene next, but it can't be after and I don't know how I could put it before" and the answer that came to me was a time loop, and then the next step was to explore the question of "do the loops have to be indexed in base-ten?". I didn't have a name for Char until many loops in, but decided on Char because of the aforementioned primitive type and built the Undertale interest off of it. The whole thing with a math degree instead of a CS degree is because of one loop where...I'll just call it the Math loop (nominally Loop 32, but this is more the 50th loop because of hexadecimal), and the details of how someone with a math degree in the twenty-second century could have some knowledge of computer science were lifted from my life (so, this might qualify for the "someone making art that's weirdly accurate about their field of work").

Inspired by @aromanticsky, for the one OC I can muster up the focus for (and whom I probably haven't talked about too much)
