The roots of rapping are found in African American music and bear similarities to traditional African music, particularly that of the griots of West African culture. The African American traditions of signifyin', the dozens, and jazz poetry all influence hip hop music, as well as the call and response patterns of African and African American religious ceremonies.

5 to the Eye With Stars, R.A.P. Ferreira (2022)
While 5 to the Eye With Stars is, much like R.A.P. Ferreira’s Bob’s Son and The Light Emitting Diamond Cutter Scriptures, far from as statement-like or far-ranging as Purple Moonlight Pages, it’s another thoughtful and magnificently executed work. These shorter releases are just as apt for fixation and adoration as Ferreira’s lengthier pieces.
Pick: ‘fighting back’

To You by Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes is remembered as a pioneer of American ‘jazz poetry’, which is built on jazz-like movements in rhythm, phrasing and syncopation. This poem - with its clever use of dashes at the ends of lines - seems almost distracted.
James Langston Mercer Hughes: poet, writer, journalist and social activist (1901-1967)
To You
To sit and dream, to sit and read,
To sit and learn about the world
Outside our world of here and now -
Our problem world -
To dream of vast horizons of the soul
Through dreams made whole,
Unfettered, free - help me!
All you who are dreamers too,
Help me to make
Our world anew.
I reach out my dreams to you.
The great possibilities of dreams is a timeless poetic theme. If Hughes was unconsciously referencing Shakespeare’s Hamlet in this poem, who is to say John Lennon was not repurposing Hughes when he wrote Imagine?

make it up
i'll damn make it up
one day i'm going to make it up
and that will be grand
and making me feel all sorts of ways
it's going to be great
the day i make it up
you bet, you bet it will
i'll make it up and it will be great
when i make it
when i make it up
it's going to be great in all sorts of ways
