The City of Unspeakable Fear was a good novel, but it was its' translator's afterword that actually sold me on it being a great one. Mostly by tying the novel's own themes of forgeries and coincidences into a history of forgeries and coincidences surrounding the author and the various artists who've adapted his work. I often feel like good, entertaining reviews are closer to stories than anything else, which coupled with my love for stories about stories, means I'm tempted to play around with creating a fake review as the setup for a story. It would be a trick with a venerable tradition behind it; I'd be building on a framework that a great house has already been built on. But it seems a fun place to explore.

Howard; "Feigman's Beard" by August Derleth"; "Le tableau" by Jean Ray (translated as "Nude with a Dagger," which would also have been a customary Brundage cover subject); and "The Music of Erich Zann" by H.P. Lovecraft.

Malpertuis is a puzzle box of nested narratives wrested from a set of manuscripts stolen from a monastery. A bizarre collection of distrustful relatives has gathered together in the ancient stone mansion of a sea-trading dynasty for the impending death of the occult scientist, Uncle Cassave, and the reading of his will. Forced to dwell together for the remainder of their lives within the stifling walls of Malpertuis for the sake of a cursed inheritance, their banal existence gradually gives way to love affairs and secret plots, as the building slowly exposes a malevolence that eventually leads to a series of ghastly deaths. The eccentric personalities it houses—which include an obsessive taxidermist, a hypochondriac, a trio of vengeful sisters and a former paint store manager who has gone mad—begin to shed like skins to reveal yet another hidden story buried in the novel’s structure, one that turns the haunted-house tradition on its head and culminates in an apocalyptic denouement.

bref du coup ouais ya 2-3 ans bientôt 4 j'ai écrit afterwork basiquement c'est une histoire de fantôme paske j'ai toujours kiffé les trucs creepy et je zonais sur 4chan /x/ quand j'étais plus jeune. Et là dedans inconsciemment ou pas inconsciemment je sais pas trop, j'ai mis mes expés de début de transition et de camgirl, et puis toutes mes expériences de salariat de merde où tu te fais utiliser et humilier en permanence. Fait que Afterwork ça parle surtout de ça mais qu'aussi moi j'ai été nourrie à Lovecraft et autres petits maîtres du bouquin Pulp (comme par exemple Jean Ray, que j’adore) qui vend de l'horreur existentielle sous cette forme à la fois indigente (racoleuse) et grandiose et tout. Et moi je crois que je me disais, l'horreur existentielle pour moi ça serait si j'avais des patrons quand je faisais de la cam, et que ces patrons allaient me mettre devant des entités d'un autre monde qui sont un danger pour ma santé. En vrai l'horreur existentielle c'est quand toute ta vie tu t'es dit que le monde entier avait plus de pouvoir que toi, infiniment plus de pouvoir, aucune considération pour ta misérable vie remplaçable, qu'ils allaient te noyer dans la baignoire et faire une mixtape avec pour faire des vues à travers des chaînes youtube de faits divers glauques.

La grande frousse (Большой испуг) (Город великого страха)

. Екранізація роману Жана Рея "Місто великого страху" (мого улюбленого твору автора).

З пісні на початку фільму "Він хороший хлопець з ніжним серцем, але з'являється Трике, смерть слідує за ним по п'ятах, а він сміється їй в обличчя".

Комедійне прочитання чудового роману. Інспектор-недотепа розкриє таємницю, що виявилася не по зубах материм професіоналам.

Мокі не зумів, або не збирався передати атмосферу страху, властиву роману Рея (яке він (роман) враження справив 1990 року, коли друкувався у "Зміні"). Тут скоріше комедійний трилер та бурлеск. Якщо точніше, Мокі показав як за допомогою страху можна управляти життям цілого міста.

Це, звичайно, не німецька серія "по Уоллесу", але по атмосфері більш-менш схожий продукт. Хороший і досить цікавий, але все ж таки сильно відрізняється від першоджерела.

Рідкісна можливість побачити Бурвіля в ролі поліцейського.

Хороший фільм, що сильно програє роману і істотно від нього відрізняється.
