Information, of all things of value in this world, is most precious. Katherine had learned that the hardest of ways.
She had been trying to keep tabs on everyone, especially the Salvatore brothers, who were the cause of her most recent headaches. Dwelling on the irony of that made her skin itch, considering the amount of time she had spent causing them grief.
She was sipping on a glass of bourbon, trying not to think about how her plans were crumbling. She hoped to charm Elijah, get him to protect her like he did last time.
But when he found her, he wasn't the same. He didn't have the same softness about him, the gentleness in his eyes. He was harder, angrier, more ruthless. She supposed that was her fault, she wondered how her life would have turned out had she trusted him...
She didn't regret her choice, she knew it was worth it, she always chose her freedom first, nothing else mattered.
And she had almost gotten away, if only she had a little more information.
But now, here she was, back under the thumb of the man who had taken everything from her.
Klaus.
"Please, just...kill me. I've told you everything that I know," she pleaded, not sure why she was bothering.
He never showed her mercy, but she couldn't help but hope he would spare her, if not for old times sake.
"You see, I believe that you believe that, but what would you not know? What could they be keeping from you? Hmm? Anything? Tell me." He said, his voice was calm as he compelled her to speak the truth.
"When I was at the Salvatore house, I saw their sister, drugged and unconscious. They were keeping her that way,"she said, her voice trembling, she couldn't control the words that came out.
Klaus smiled, the wheels turning in his mind, "Any theories on why they would do that to her?"
Katherine had an idea, but she had no proof. She had no idea what Damon was up to, but he always had a plan.
"I don't know," she said, shaking her head, she didn't like where this was going.
"C'mon, you have always been a clever little minx," Klaus purred, his hand coming up to caress her cheek, it made her feel sick.
"The only reason I can think of is to stop her from doing something," Katherine said, her mind racing, thinking back to everything she had seen, and the things she had missed.
Klaus grinned, his hand moving down to her throat, he began squeezing the air out of her.
"You can detect weaknesses like a bloodhound can sniff out a fox, so tell me, sweetheart. Is this your best guess or are you holding something back?" He asked, his fingers tightening.
She struggled, clawing at his arm, desperately trying to loosen his grip. "She's... Loyal to a fault, to those she loves, she tried to kill me in the 1800s for messing with her brothers,"
He raised an eyebrow, his face a mask of amusement, "So you think she's shifted loyalties? To whom?" He let go of her throat, and she collapsed to the ground, coughing and wheezing.
"I don't know... The only other players in town are the wolves... There's no reason for her to side with them..." She paused, her mind racing.
"There's only one other option," she said, her face contorting into a grin.
"Who?" Klaus growled, his patience was growing thin.
"Elijah.”

You woke in a strange daze, unsure of how much time had passed. You didn't feel rested, in fact, you felt sluggish.
You sighed softly, trying to gather your strength. Your mind was slightly hazy and you felt hungover. Your limbs were not responding to your commands, causing you even more panic.
Your eyes finally opened, adjusting to the light. You were in your own bedroom, laying on your bed, the soft hum of your ceiling fan was the only thing you could hear.
You had a horrible sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, you slowly looked around. There was a pile of empty blood bags on your nightstand, a cup full of vervain, and a half-empty bottle of bourbon. It was clear that someone had been here taking care of you and keeping you sedated, judging by the empty bottle it was most likely Damon.
You rolled out of bed, stumbling across the room. Your legs were weak, and you were still groggy. You managed to make it to the door and pull it open.
It was eerily quiet, the ticking clock in the hallway was pounding in your ears. You walked towards the stairs, leaning heavily against the wall, hoping to make it all the way down without falling.
As soon as you made it to the bottom, you were overcome with a wave of nausea and dizziness. You grabbed the banister, closing your eyes, waiting for the spell to pass.
Fuzzy, half formed memories came flooding back to you. Elijah was gone, your brothers had stabbed him, and then they had drugged you, so you couldn't wake him.
You remembered Damon coming into your room, holding a blood bag up to your lips, forcing you to drink.
You remembered Stefan, sitting on the edge of the bed, brushing the hair off your forehead, telling you to sleep.
You remembered Elena, cleaning your face, her voice low and gentle, she had been crying, apologizing.
Someone had carried you outside, then Elena invited you back in. The house was under her name now, a new defense measure added. You wondered who they were trying to keep out, had Klaus finally come to town? Fear suddenly gripped you... Where was everyone?
You slowly made your way to the basement door, taking the steps one at a time, trying to ignore the overwhelming need to puke.
Once you were down in the basement, you looked at Elijah's body, lying in the same position you left him. His clothes were now charred and tattered, the pillow and blanket were gone, probably burned to ash.
You moved closer, collapsing on the floor next to his body. He looked the same, gray, his eyes closed, his hair in disarray. You brushed his hair back, leaning down and kissing his forehead.
"lijah," you whispered, reaching out to hold his hand. "I know we agreed, if anything happens, we would say goodbye and walk away, but I can't, not this time. You're a part of me, I don't think you even realize how much you have come to mean to me."
You looked at the dagger in his chest, weighing the consequences of pulling it out. You didn't know what would happen if he woke up, he could rip you to shreds, or he could pull you into his arms, and hold you until you stopped crying.
There was a fifty-fifty chance he would do the latter, and that was good enough for you. Your fingers curled around the blade and you pulled it out. Then you dropped it onto the floor, letting it land with a metallic thud.
Nothing happened.
Elijah was still.
You leaned down and pressed your ear to his chest, listening.
Nothing.
"Please," you said softly, kissing his cold cheek. "Please wake up."
You returned to laying your head on his chest, your fingers curling in the fabric of his suit.
You closed your eyes, tears running down your face, holding in a breath. Waiting, waiting, waiting…
Suddenly, his heart sprung to life, beating rapidly. You sat up quickly, looking down at him, his eyes were open.
You could hardly believe it, he was looking up at the ceiling, his chest heaving, his mouth open. Then he sat up, gasping for air, looking around the basement wildly.
He was in clear agony, struggling to breathe, he looked at you with anguished eyes, the color returning to his face.
"I can't...I can't be in this house." He rushed to his feet, falling over himself, stumbling his way to the exit.
You limped out of the basement and upstairs, racing after him. The moment he got outside, he collapsed on his knees, taking in deep breaths.
You knelt in front of him, safe behind the threshold of the doorway.
"I'm so sorry," You said, your voice shaking. "I had no idea. They drugged me and I couldn't..."
"Y/n," He interrupted, his eyes finding yours, they were full of pain. "I...need a moment,"
You nodded, holding back tears that were threatening to spill. He looked awful, his clothes were ruined, and his skin was gray and dull. He was clearly starving.
You took the dagger and rolled it past the threshold, it hit his knee and he grabbed it, holding it in his hand. He glared at the blade, then looked up at you.
"Thank you," he said, his expression softening. "So much for rule three,"
"You would have done the same for me," you replied, a hint of a smile on your lips.
He slowly got to his feet, his skin still a bit gray, his face tired and worn. He held his hand out, inviting you to step over the threshold, which you did, allowing him to pull you into his arms.
You closed your eyes, enjoying the embrace, your arms wrapped around his neck, you buried your face into his shoulder.
"This is a bad idea," he said, his voice rumbling in his chest.
"I know," you said, squeezing him tightly.
He didn't respond, simply holding you against him, his breathing steadying.
"Do you want to get out of here?" You asked, looking up at him, a sad expression on his face.
"That is an excellent idea,"
Tumblr media
Your phone would not stop ringing.
You had been ignoring it for the last few hours. Elijah had taken you to a luxury hotel the next town over, far enough from Mystic Falls so you didn't have to worry about anyone showing up unexpectedly.
You were sitting on the bed, eating some room service, watching him try on some suits he had compelled the concierge to bring to the room.
"Who keeps calling?" Elijah asked, looking at you over his shoulder, buttoning a shirt.
"Damon and Stefan," You replied, sighing, "they are probably worried."
"Why haven't you answered?" He asked, frowning.
"Because... I'm mad at them," You admitted, picking at the food on your plate. "After what they did to me,"
"They were protecting themselves, and you," he said softly, putting his suit jacket on, and smoothing it.
You were surprised by him defending them, considering they had literally killed him.
"It doesn't matter, I can't face them right now," you said, shaking your head, "I'll just ignore their calls, it's the best I can do."
A text from Damon popped up on your screen, in full capital letters, it read:
‘WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?! ANSWER YOUR PHONE.’
You grumbled and picked your phone up, ready to block him when you got another text. This one was from Stefan:
‘Klaus is in town, in Alaric's body. Please just let us know you are okay,’
Your breath caught in your throat, and you froze, staring at the message.
Elijah had been looking at you and saw your reaction, "What's wrong?"
"I don't know, maybe nothing," you said, showing him your phone, his face darkening when he saw the texts.
He looked at you for a long moment, like he was contemplating his next words very carefully.
"What?" You asked, wondering what was going through his mind.
"We can't do this," he said, shaking his head. "It's too dangerous."
"What?" You said again, standing up and walking over to him.
You placed your hands on his chest, sliding them up to his shoulders. He was avoiding your gaze, but his arms moved around your waist, pulling you against him.
"What's wrong?" You asked, searching his face, but he still wouldn't look at you.
"Rule two, darling," he said softly, pressing his forehead to yours, his hands caressing your back.
"Don't do that," you said, your voice breaking, your chest ached, you were holding back tears. "I don't care about the rules, I just want you,"
"You don't know what you're asking for," he said, his breath hitching, his voice low. "If Klaus finds out about you and I, he will kill you,"
"Why? Why do you want to kill him? Who is he to you?" You asked, wanting answers, your hands curled into fists on his chest.
"I've known him since I was a child, he's my brother," he said, pulling back, so he could look you in the eyes.
You blinked, not believing what he was saying.
"But..." you stammered, not sure what to say.
He swallowed hard and began telling you all about his life. His family, what life was like in the viking age, being turned vampire, learning his mother had been unfaithful, that his beloved brother was a bastard.
"I never saw him any different, none of our siblings did," he said, his voice wavering.
You could tell this was a difficult subject, you squeezed his hand, reminding him that you were there.
"We learned of our mother's infidelity in the worst way possible..." He trailed off, his voice shaking.
"You don't have to," you said, scooting closer, wrapping your arms around him and resting your head on his shoulder.
He leaned his head against yours, his fingers stroking your arm. "I've done many terrible things, but what plagues me the most is what I did to Niklaus,"
"What did you do?" You asked, lifting your head to look at him, his brown eyes were watery.
He shook his head, unable to vocalize it, and you didn't push him. You held him, waiting, knowing it would take time.
He eventually continued, his voice low, filled with shame. "My mother was a powerful witch, she cursed him. She bound his werewolf side, made him weaker, unable to turn. She used the full moon to make it possible to break the curse."
You frowned, thinking over what he was telling you. It didn't make any sense, Klaus was a vampire, not a werewolf.
"I thought..." you said, hesitating. "I thought he was a vampire,"
"He is," Elijah said, nodding, "he's also a werewolf, but that side of him bound,"
He continued his story, explaining how Klaus was different, that he was a hybrid. The first and only of his kind, half vampire, half werewolf.
He told you how Klaus was angry and resentful, and that he had good reason to be. That he and Klaus had spent many centuries trying to break his curse, to free him from his chains.
"So the ritual isn't about werewolves or vampires being freed from their curses," You said, the realization hitting you.
"No, it's not," He admitted, frowning. "It's about my brother,"
You were quiet for a long time, processing all of the information. So Klaus had no intention of freeing the werewolves or the vampires, he just wanted to be free.
"So why do you want to kill him?" You asked, looking at Elijah.
He sighed, rubbing his face, clearly struggling.
"I have other siblings, and he took them from me," He said, his tone was strained, the words catching in his throat. "I've searched for decades, and I can't find them,"
You squeezed his hand, encouraging him to continue.
"I've lost all hope of ever finding them," he said, his jaw clenching, he looked at you with his dark tear filled eyes. "All I have now is my revenge,"
You nodded, understanding where he was coming from. If you lost your brothers, you would burn the world down to avenge them.
"What is the ritual supposed to do?" You asked, curious, wanting to learn more.
"He has to kill a werewolf, a vampire, and a doppelganger. Their blood is necessary for the ritual," he explained, his fingers gently running along your arm. "When it's complete he will be weakened, then I will kill him."
"Elena is innocent... Elijah I'm sorry but you can't let him hurt her," you said, frowning.
He looked away from you, his brow furrowing, "She has to die, but not permanently,"
"What do you mean?" You asked, confused.
"A few centuries ago, there was another doppelganger, I grew some affections for her... I found a way to keep her alive," he said, his tone was flat.
"Katherine," you said, the name leaving a bad taste in your mouth.
He nodded, "I will give Elena the elixir I acquired for Katerina. It will save her,"
You let out a sigh of relief, at least Elena would be safe.
"To kill your brother, it's not an easy thing to do," You said, leaning your head against his. "Are you really prepared for what it means?"
"The full moon is in three days," He said, changing the subject, his expression was grim. "The ritual will happen then,"
"Yes," he said, without a moment of hesitation.
You sat in silence, neither of you knew what to say.
"Sometimes there's honor in revenge," he said, his hand resting on your leg. "And sometimes you just need to put down a rabid dog, no matter how much you once loved him."
"Eli-," You started, but he cut you off with a kiss, his lips crashing against yours.
You melted against him, forgetting what you were about to say. He had this way of silencing you, and it drove you crazy.
"No more talk of the ritual," he said, his fingers gently brushing over your cheek, his eyes gazing into yours. "I want to enjoy the time we have left,"
You didn't know what to say, so you nodded, and he kissed you again.
Tumblr media
Elijah watched you sleep, the sheet barely covering your naked body. His fingers traced patterns along your skin, his touch light as a feather.
He was trying to ignore the dread, the sinking feeling of guilt in the pit of his stomach. He needed to plan, to prepare for what he had to do, but the only thing on his mind was you.
He should have known better, he was foolish to have ever gotten involved with you. When he came to Mystic Falls he told himself no weaknesses, no distractions, and yet here you were.
"Stop watching me, it's creepy," you mumbled, rolling over, the sheet falling off of you, revealing your naked form.
"Apologies," he said, unable to help the smirk that tugged at his lips.
"I forgive you, I know I'm irresistible," you said, yawning, stretching, your body arching.
He chuckled, leaning over, kissing you. You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer.
He broke the kiss and pressed his forehead against yours, "If I asked you to do something, would you do it?"
You gave him a curious look, your fingers tangling in his hair, "That depends,"
"Would you stay here, and not interfere with the ritual?" He asked, his brow furrowing, his tone was strained.
"Elijah-," You said, sitting up, the sheets pooling around your waist.
"Please," he begged, his eyes softening.
"But Elena-," You tried to protest, but he cut you off with a kiss, his hands cupping your face.
"Your brothers will keep her safe, but if you were involved... I would lose my mind with worry," he admitted, his eyes filled with turmoil.
"I thought this was just physical?" You teased, hoping to ease the tension.
He smiled and shook his head, his thumb caressing your cheek. "I love you," he said it so softly you barely heard it, his voice cracking.
You looked at him, searching his face for any signs of a lie, but there was none. He wasn't lying, he was telling the truth, the sincerity in his words and his eyes was evident.
Your words caught in your throat, a lump forming. You couldn't bring yourself to say it, you wanted to, but it was like there was a block.
You pressed your lips to his, your tongue sliding past his lips, kissing him deeply, trying to pour all of your emotions into it.
He broke the kiss and pressed his forehead against yours, his fingers tracing your jaw, "Say it,"
"I can't," You whispered, your voice wavering.
He tilted your chin up, his dark eyes meeting yours. "I love you miss Salvatore, and it frightens me more than anything ever has,"
"Elijah," you said, cupping his face, your heart aching. "I... I love you too,"
He pulled you into a kiss, his arms wrapping around your waist, lifting you into his lap, your legs wrapping around his torso.
You were panting, the kiss was heated, needy, your fingers digging into his shoulders. You felt his erection against your inner thigh, hard and ready, and you ground against it.
"I love you," you repeated, his hands grabbing your ass, pulling you closer.
"I love you," he replied, his lips attacking your neck, sucking, biting, marking you as his.
You reached down, wrapping your fingers around his length, sliding your hand along his shaft, positioning him at your entrance.
You lowered yourself down, desperately needing to feel connected to him, his fingers dug into your hips as you sat fully in his lap, taking him deep inside of you.
He moaned, his eyes closing, his head tilting back, you leaned forward and kissed his neck, your fangs scraping along his skin.
You rolled your hips, slowly, taking him in and out of you, his breath hitching with each movement. You grinned against his skin, loving how you were making him react.
"That's it, take what you need," he said, his hand coming up to cup the back of your head, keeping you close to him.
"I love you," you breathed, your voice a soft whimper, as you sunk your fangs into his neck.
His blood flooded your mouth, warm and sweet, and you sucked, feeling his pulse beating against your lips. He tasted like pure power, it was unlike anything you had ever experienced.
He moaned, his fingers tangling in your hair, gripping it tight. You were riding him, moving your hips in a fluid motion, grinding down onto him, feeling his cock hit that perfect spot deep inside.
You pulled back, his blood dripping from your lips, his hands were on your ass, guiding your hips. He kissed you, biting down on your bottom lip and tasting you. Your blood mixing together, it was the most erotic thing you had ever done.
"That's my girl," he whispered, his voice ragged, his eyes dark with lust. "So beautiful, and mine,"
"Yes, all yours," you moaned, grinding down harder onto him.
You felt his hand moving between your ass cheeks, his finger finding your puckered hole, slowly pressing into you.
You gasped, your eyes fluttering closed, it felt so good, him inside of you like this.
"I want you to cum for me, my sweet little love," he said, his voice soft and gentle, his finger moving deeper.
You moaned, clutching at his chest, your nails raking along his skin, drawing blood. The combination of him filling you, his finger, and the taste of his blood in your mouth sent you over the edge.
You let out a long, low moan, against his lips, your walls clenching around him, milking him for everything he had.
He grunted, his eyes fluttering closed, he bit his lip, trying to muffle his moans, and he came deep inside of you.
Your body was trembling, his arms wrapped around you, holding you close to him.
You pressed your face into the crook of his neck, his skin slick with sweat, the smell of sex and blood hung heavy in the air.
You pulled back and kissed him, his hand cupping the back of your head, his fingers tangling in your hair.
"After this is all over, will you come with me?" He asked, his hand stroking your cheek.
"Where would we go?" You asked, smiling.
"Anywhere, preferably somewhere with a beach and sunshine," he replied, his fingers running through your hair.
"It's a date," you said, nuzzling his neck, breathing in his scent.
"A date?" He chuckled, his fingers tickling your sides, you giggled and squirmed away from him. "That's new for us,"
You grinned, looking down at him. "I like the sound of it,"
"As do I," he agreed, his hand stroking your cheek.
"When I first met you, I never would've thought we'd end up here," you mused, running your fingers along his jaw.
"Neither did I," he admitted, his lips turning up into a small smile.
"So, tell me about this beach trip, what would we do?" You asked, wanting to keep him talking, not wanting to leave his side.
"Hmmm," he said, thinking for a moment. "I would find us a quiet little bungalow, right on the water, with a private stretch of sand for us,"
You closed your eyes, listening to the smooth timber of his voice, imagining the soft waves and fresh ocean air.
"And we'd have our meals brought in by servants, we'd lounge on the beach, swim, and make love whenever the mood struck us," he said, his fingers dancing across your back.
"I could live with that," you said, sighing contently, enjoying his warmth.
"I'm glad," he said, leaning down and pressing his lips to yours, a soft, gentle kiss.
You broke the kiss and stared into his dark eyes, his thumb brushing across your bottom lip.
"If anything happens to me I want you to know, I don't regret a single second of it," he said, his voice soft.
"What?" You asked, giving him a worried look.
"You need to know, in case I fail, and my brother ends me before I can end him," he said, his face serious, his eyes clouded with fear.
"Elijah-," you started to protest, but he cut you off.
"Promise me," he said, his voice pleading. "If this ends badly, you will remember rule three,"
"I thought we had given up on the rules," you said, trying not to let him see how afraid you were.
"Not this one," he said, his voice cracking.
"Why? You can't seriously expect me to-"
"Please," he said, his dark eyes locked on yours. "For me,"
You sighed and nodded, leaning into him, his arms wrapping around you.
"Thank you," he whispered, his fingers stroking your back, his lips brushing against your hair.
"Just come back to me," you said, trying not to cry.
"Always,”

The problem, Damon: you talk a good game but you don't actually know anything. She'll never forgive you. And never for a vampire...It's a very long time.
Elijah's words had been echoing around in Damon's head since that morning, the smugness in the older vampire's voice made him want to put his fist through the wall.
He had made a mess of things, but he couldn't admit that to anyone. The feeling he had when he learned that today was the day of the sacrifice, the day that he would lose Elena... He simply couldn't handle it. His desire for action was overwhelming.
He didn't like everything being out of his control, so he did what he had to do. And now his brother and Elena hated him. Elijah being right was the cherry on top of his shit sundae.
In times like this, when he hit rock bottom then fell a little further, he turned to his oldest friend, his closest confidant, his beloved sister.
But you weren't picking up the phone, despite Elijah's assurances you were alive and somewhere safe, it didn't soothe his worries.
So he tried one last time, and this time you actually picked up, and his heart nearly leapt out of his chest when he heard your voice.
"If you are calling to lecture me on love, I will remind you that you are no better," your voice made his throat constrict.
"I know, I'm not," he said, his voice sounding strange to his own ears.
"Are you okay?" You asked, a little softer.
"No," he answered, his voice shaking.
"What happened?" You asked, concern creeping into your tone.
"Everything's gone to hell," he replied, his voice strained. "I gave Elena my blood... Well actually I made her drink my blood,"
"Oh Damon..."
"I had no other choice,"
"She's going to hate you,"
"I know, Elijah told me,"
"Damon... He's right,"
"I know that too,"
There was a silence on the other end of the phone, he could hear you moving around, like you were packing a bag.
"I'm on my way," you said, finally. "Partly to kick your ass, partly to give you a hug,"
"Always the multitasker," he joked, his voice cracking. "But do not come home tonight, I just need to know you are safe,"
"I'll do what I want," you said, and he could almost see the pout on your lips.
He smiled, he had missed your stubbornness, and it was the closest thing to normal he had felt all day. But he couldn't risk you being involved, everyone was already in the crossfire, and the thought of you being added to that mix was too much for him to bear.
"Sister," he said, his voice firm. "Please, please, listen to me, just this once, and stay away,"
You let out a long, irritated sigh, "I'm so bored, and I'm getting hungry,"
"Well then go find someone nice to eat and watch a movie," he suggested, chuckling.
"I can't concentrate, not when everyone I love is in danger," you grumbled.
"Does that love extend to Elijah?" He asked, trying to keep his voice even.
"Yes," you said simply, and his heart ached.
He had known, of course, but hearing you say it aloud made it real.
"Why him? Like seriously..." Damon asked, he was genuinely curious, and he needed something to distract him from the shit show he had gotten himself into. "How did you even meet him?"
"I was hunting," you answered, sounding amused. "He found my methods to be entertaining, and I found him to be a challenge,"
"Did you know who he was? What he planned for Elena?" Damon asked, trying not to sound judgemental.
"Yes, I knew who he was. But we had rules, to keep things from getting complicated," you explained.
"That didn't really work out did it?" He teased, smiling.
"No," you admitted, laughing.
There was a long pause, and he could feel his emotions starting to get the best of him.
"Damon, promise me you won't die for her?" You asked, your voice wavering.
"You know I can't do that," he said, his voice low.
"I know," you whispered. "Just please, try to survive this,"
"I'll do my best," he promised, knowing he couldn't really promise anything.
"I love you big brother," you said, and his eyes started to water. "Tell Stefan I love him too,"
"I will, I love you too," he choked out, and he heard the line go dead.
Damon stared at his phone, the picture of you, him and Stefan was staring back at him, his heart aching.
"I hope I see you tomorrow, little sis,"

The town you were hiding out in was quiet and a little boring, but you didn't mind. It was the first time in a long time you had had a few days to yourself, no drama, no life or death situations. Just perfect mundanity.
You were lounging in a café, enjoying a cup of coffee, and watching the locals, wondering what their lives were like. You envied them, their simplicity, their happiness. You imagined you and Elijah in a little house, in a place like this, with a garden and a view of the ocean.
You were lost in your own world, dreaming about the impossible, when someone cleared their throat. You looked up, a smile playing at your lips. Dinner had just arrived.
He was handsome, with curly hair and blue eyes, he had a sharp wicked glint in his eyes that sent a thrill through you. You always enjoyed a good meal with a bit of bite.
"Mind if I sit?" He asked, grinning.
"Not at all," you purred, gesturing to the chair.
He sat, and ordered a coffee, and he turned his attention back to you.
"I don't mean to be so forward, but you are downright striking," he said, his gaze running over your body.
"Thank you," you said, giving him a flirty smile. "It's a bit of a family trait,"
"Is that so? Mine as well, if you can't tell," he said, smiling.
You laughed, enjoying his company.
"You aren't from around here," he observed, sipping his coffee.
"Neither are you," you said, tilting your head.
"I'm just visiting, on vacation," he replied, grinning.
"Same,"
He was charming, and handsome, and you could feel the hunger starting to rise within you.
"I'm staying at the Inn down the street," he said, giving you a hopeful look.
"I'm staying there as well,"
"Well then, may I escort you home?"
"You may,"
The walk back to the Inn was short, you enjoyed his company, he was easy to talk to, and funny.
"Would you like a nightcap?" He asked, flashing you a crooked smile.
"That would be lovely," you said, grinning.
His hand came to rest on the small of your back, guiding you into the room. You usually enjoyed playing with your food a little before you ate, but you were committed to Elijah now, and you didn't want to stray.
As soon as you entered his room, he pinned you to the wall, moving in to kiss you. You politely dodged by pressing your lips to his neck, breathing him in.
"You are a vision," he said, his hand sliding up your arm, and into your hair.
"Thank you," you murmured, your fangs grazing his skin, his pulse racing beneath your lips.
He moaned, and gripped your waist, pressing his hips against yours. You could feel him, hard against your thigh, and you went to bite down.
Suddenly, he pulled your head back by your hair, hard. With strength you hadn't expected, he forced you back, pushing you hard into the wall, the plaster cracking behind you.
"I see why my brother is so taken," he growled, his eyes darkening.
Your heart dropped into your stomach, "Klaus,"
"The one and only, love," he said, smirking.
You tried to pull away, but his grip on you was too strong.
"Don't worry, love," he purred, his hand stroking your cheek. "I won't hurt you,"
"Fuck you," you said, glaring at him.
He smirked, and kissed you, hard, his teeth cutting into your lips.
"You're a feisty little thing," he said, licking his lips. "Even wilder than your brothers,"
You hissed and tried to struggle, his hands tightening around your arms, digging into your skin. "If you hurt them..."
"Now, now," he said, tutting. "Let's not make threats, especially when you can't back them up,"
You bared your fangs at him, but he only grinned.
"I've been wanting to meet you," he said, his thumb brushing across your cheek. "Elijah's little distraction,"
"I'm more than a distraction," you growled, struggling against his hold.
"Hmmm," he hummed, leaning in and nuzzling your neck. "I know,"
You were too frightened to speak, your whole body trembling.
"It's what I'm counting on dear,"
Tumblr media
Klaus had been dragging you through the woods for what felt like hours.
Your fear had turned into anger and you began to try and fight him. It seemed to amuse him for a while, he'd let you run only to catch you with ease.
"Why are you doing this?" You growled, his hand holding your arm tightly, leading you through the trees.
"To be reborn, as I truly am," he said, his expression thoughtful.
You rolled your eyes and let out an annoyed sigh, he was a narcissist, the kind of man who enjoyed the sound of his own voice.
"Do you know how long I've waited for this?" He asked, looking down at you. "One thousand years,"
 "I know," you sighed.
"Of course you do," he said, smirking. "Elijah loves to spill his heart out after a good bedding doesn't he?"
You didn't answer him, he was trying to get under your skin, and it was working.
"My brother has always been the strong, self righteous type, with an unbreakable moral code," Klaus chuckled, picking up his pace, dragging you along. "That is... Until he gets his face between a pretty pair of legs,"
"Fuck you," you spat, anger boiling up inside of you.
"You have a smart mouth," he said, his fingers squeezing your arm. "I think I'll like to see how you use it later,"
You freed yourself from his grip and slapped him hard across the face. No man was allowed to speak to you in that way, and you certainly weren't going to tolerate it from this monster.
His expression changed from amusement to anger in the blink of an eye. He slammed you against a nearby tree, the twigs and branches impaling you.
You cried out, blood pouring from the puncture wounds, and he grabbed a fistful of your hair, forcing you to look him in the eye.
 "That was very, very stupid,"
His words sent a chill down your spine, and a fresh wave of fear washed over you.
"What's the matter?" He asked, his tone taunting. "No more choice words and acts of violence for me?"
"Don't kill me," you said, tears starting to run down your cheeks.
"I won't," he assured you, his lips brushing against yours. "But I will kill everyone in Mystic Falls if you don't do what I say. If you don't believe me... Just ask sweet little Katerina about it,"
Your blood ran cold, you knew what he was capable of, and you had no choice but to obey him.
Through the trees you could see a circle of fire, and you felt dread sink into the pit of your stomach.
"No," you pleaded, trying to pull away.
"Stop being so dramatic, love," he said, rolling his eyes.
He pulled you into the clearing, throwing you down on the ground next to the three women sitting in their own rings of fire.
You could see Elena, a terrified look on her face, along with her aunt Jenna and a woman you didn't recognize.
"Hello my lovelies," Klaus said, grinning. "Are we all ready?"
He gave you a swift kick, then grabbed you by the hair and pulled you to your feet. "I brought an assistant with me,"
He pushed you forward, leaving you to stand there as he walked to the altar, handing the moonstone to a witch standing nearby.
You looked at Elena and Jenna, they were beyond scared, their eyes full of tears, and you felt your stomach twist, you didn't know how to help them.
The witch had begun to chant, a mixture of Latin and something else, the moonstone began to spark, then it exploded into nothing.
"Bring me the wolf," Klaus demanded, looking at you with a wild, manic look in his eyes.
You shook your head, your whole body trembling, you refused to let him hurt someone else.
"It's either them or the entire town, love. That includes your brothers," he growled, his jaw clenched.
The thought of losing Stefan and Damon made your stomach clench, and tears started to run down your face.
"Bring her. Now," he growled, his tone brokering no argument.
You walked towards the first ring of fire, to the terrified woman who was writhing in pain, her cries echoing through the trees.
The ring disappeared as you approached, and you lifted the girl into your arms. She was whimpering and shaking, the transition having begun.
"I'm so sorry," you whispered, carrying her to the altar.
"Good girl," Klaus hummed, taking the wolf from your arms, and laying her on the stone.
Klaus kneeled over her, looking down at her with an evil grin, his eyes were filled with a mix of desire and madness, and he plunged his hand into her chest, ripping her heart out.
Jenna and Elena screamed, watching Klaus hold up the wolf's heart, his expression triumphant.
"I'll make it quick, I promise," Klaus said, grinning. "They will barely feel a thing,"
You looked over at Elena and Jenna, their screams piercing the air, the witches chanting growing louder.
Tumblr media
Elijah was looking up at the night sky, watching the moon slowly make its way across, his thoughts on you. He couldn't stop thinking about your smile, and the way your eyes lit up whenever you saw him.
If tonight went smoothly, he had so many plans with you, the first was taking you to Paris, a city that was sure to dazzle you. After that he would whisk you away to Rome, where you could visit the many art museums and eat all the food you wanted.
He wanted to spoil you, shower you with everything you could ever want, and then some. It had been nearly sixty years of searching for his brother, trying to uncover the rest of his family. He felt like tonight was the first chance he had to truly mourn, then he could finally move on and spend the rest of his time with you.
He had spoken with Stefan earlier, before he left with Bonnie to go stop Klaus. He liked Stefan, he was an honorable man who respected the choices of the ones he loved, even if he didn't agree with them.
Elijah hoped he and Stefan could be friends one day, once everything settled down, he knew that would make you happy. To see peace between him and your brothers. Damon would be a more difficult task, he reminded him of Klaus, cocky and impulsive, and that was a difficult combination.
The waiting was beginning to make him antsy. He had to wait for the right moment to strike, but there were so many factors outside of his control, he didn't like the feeling. He needed to distract himself, keep his mind from wandering too far.
He thought about his siblings, of sweet Rebekah, wild Kol, and serious Finn. What would they think of him killing Klaus? He wished he could have saved them, he wanted so badly to see them again.
He let out a long sigh, steeling himself for what he had to do. Klaus was no longer his brother, he had been twisted into a monster, and he had to be put down.
It was time, he could see the moon hanging high above him, it was time to end this.
Tumblr media
You watched Klaus squeeze the wolf's heart over the altar, the blood dripping into the fire, igniting it.
"Next, the vampire," he said, grinning.
You stood, frozen, watching him, as a wave of guilt crashed over you.
"Bring me Jenna, go on,"
You shook your head, tears stinging your eyes.
"No," you said in the smallest voice.
You could hear Jenna and Elena, talking to each other, they were saying their goodbyes and it broke your heart.
Klaus turned, and walked over to you, his eyes were dark and cold, and his jaw was clenched.
"Are you offering yourself in her place then?" He growled, his hand coming up to grab your chin.
You didn't answer him, you were staring over his shoulder at Jenna and Elena.
"I'll take that as a yes,"
You let him drag you to the altar, and push you down onto the cold stone, he forced you to kneel. You didn't fight him, you had lived for many decades longer than sweet Jenna and Elena, the old should always give their lives for the young.
Klaus let out a hearty chuckle and kicked you over, his hand gripping your hair.
"I don't recall you being on the guest list," Klaus yelled, looking into the dark forest.
You heard the sound of footsteps as someone approached, it was Stefan. His expression was calm, but his eyes were furious.
"What can I do for you, Mr. Salvatore?" Klaus asked, amused.
Stefan looked at you, a concerned look on his face.
"Well, I figured you could start by letting my sister go," Stefan said, his voice firm.
"Hmm," Klaus said, looking down at you. "I don't think I will, she's quite the little spitfire, and I rather enjoy her company,"
"Let her go, I'll take her place," Stefan offered, taking a step forward.
"That's quite noble of you," Klaus said, smiling. "But, I think I'd prefer my original plan. I rather appreciate the symmetry of three women...Three goddesses sacrificed at nature's altar."
He grabbed both you and Stefan and dragged you towards the rings of fire. Throwing you both down next to Elena and Jenna.
"Quite the predicament. You know, it's funny, all this talk about preserving family, and here's Stefan, granting your wish," Klaus said to Elena, smiling.
Stefan and Elena were looking at each other, a silent conversation passing between them.
"Oh, don't look so glum," Klaus said, looking between the two. "There's actually no choice,"
Klaus took a stake and plunged it into Stefan's spine, causing him to yell in pain, unable to move.
You and Elena both screamed, you got to your feet to strike Klaus, but he grabbed you by the throat, squeezing hard.
"Let them go," Elena pleaded, tears running down her cheeks. "I understand that I have to die, but they don't,"
Klaus ignored her and looked into your eyes, his hand tightening around your neck.
"Bring Jenna to the altar, or I'll kill Stefan," he growled, his fingers digging into your skin.
You nodded, tears welling in your eyes, you couldn't lose Stefan.
"Please," you whispered, your hands clawing at his.
He let you go, then walked back to the altar.
"Bring her, now," he ordered, pointing at the ring of fire surrounding Jenna.
You stood, walking slowly over to the fire, the ring disappeared and Jenna looked up at you with tear filled eyes. She looked so afraid, so helpless.
"I'm so sorry," you said, your voice breaking, as you helped her to her feet.
You walked her over to the altar, Klaus waiting patiently.
"Jenna, I'm so sorry," you whispered, your hand brushing the hair from her face.
She was sobbing, her body shaking, and you held her close, stroking her hair.
"Please Klaus, just use me instead, she's innocent," you begged, tears running down your face.
"You Salvatore's are so predictable," Klaus sighed, rolling his eyes.
Klaus walked over, and pulled Jenna from your arms, he threw her down onto the altar. Everything seemed to blur, you could hear Elena screaming, the chants of the witch, the cracking of the fire. You saw Stefan reaching out to Elena through the flames, and then, it was quiet.
Klaus plunged a stake into her heart, Elena's wails were all you could hear. Jenna's lifeless body was lying on the altar, her face frozen in fear. You had brought her to her slaughter. You had killed her.
"Such a wonderful assistant," Klaus cooed, he grabbed your chin, his bloody fingers digging into your skin. "Be a good girl and bring me the doppelganger,"
You looked into his cold eyes, his mouth twisted into a smirk.
"Now," he growled.
You nodded, then walked over to Elena, tears were running down her cheeks, but she put on a brave face as the last ring of fire disappeared.
"Elena," you whispered, tears welling in your eyes, your whole body was shaking. "I'm so, so sorry,"
"Don't," she said, her voice shaky. "It's not your fault. It's nice to have a friend here at the end,"
She held your hand as you helped her walk over to Klaus. You looked at Stefan, he was struggling to free himself, his eyes filled with worry.
"Elena," Stefan called, his voice breaking.
"It's okay, Stefan," she said, her grip on your hand tightening. "I'm ready,"
You helped her up onto the altar, and Klaus looked down at her with hungry eyes.
"Thank you Elena," he said softly, pulling her against him and moving her hair away from her neck.
"Go to hell," she said, her voice strong.
He chuckled and sank his fangs into her neck.
Elena didn't fight, she let death take her, her grip loosening on your hand, as her last breath left her.
You were shaking, the sound of Klaus drinking from her filling the silence. You had lost two friends today, and the world was suddenly a lot emptier.
When the last bit of blood left her body, Klaus dropped her to the ground and the fire in the altar went out.
You knelt next to her, brushing her hair away from her face, then you looked back at Stefan who was writhing in pain, crying at the loss of Elena.
Klaus staggered a bit, the full moon peeking out from the trees. He groaned, and started to change, his bones cracking as he stumbled forward, his expression a mask of pure bliss.
"It's happening," he moaned, his eyes turned gold, and he was overcome with pleasure. "I can feel it,"
You couldn't stand this any long, all this pain and death. You needed it to end.
You moved down the steps towards him, grabbing a branch off a nearby tree, snapping it in half.
"Come on, sweetheart," he taunted, turning to look at you, his eyes shining. "I'm indestructible,"
"I don't care," you snarled, lunging for him. "You still feel pain,"
You charged at him, striking him across the face, your rage blinding you, making you miss his fist, as it collided with your stomach.
The blow threw you across the clearing, and you landed on your back, the air leaving your lungs, the branch now lodged in your side.
You saw Damon come running out of the woods, he first looked to Elena, then to Stefan, but when he laid eyes on you, he ran to your side.
"No, no, no, no," he said, his eyes filled with panic, he pulled the wood from your side. "You're not supposed to be here,"
You could hear the concern in his voice, and you smiled up at him, cupping his face. He helped you to your feet, your wounds healing, then he pushed you behind him.
"Damon," you said softly, trying to stop him.
"Bonnie is here, it's okay, let me handle this," he said, his tone stern.
Klaus was standing there, laughing maniacally, a mad grin on his face, then his body began to shake and he fell to the ground.
Suddenly his laughter turned to screams, as Bonnie came striding out of the trees, chanting a spell, she raised her hand, causing Klaus to scream in agony. The fire returned to the altar and spread into the trees, her magic all around them as she channeled every ounce of power she possessed, bringing the hybrid to his knees.
Then she choked on her words, gasping for air, looking around for the source.
"Get the witch!" Stefan yelled, pointing to Klaus' witch, still standing at the altar, her hand outstretched.
Bonnie raised her hands, trying to focus her power, but she was struggling, and you could see the strain on her face.
The witch threw Bonnie into the air, knocking her out, her body hitting the ground.
Damon ran for the witch, and tackled her, his teeth sinking into her neck. He killed her instantly, her body going limp in his arms.
The fire disappeared, the flames extinguishing, the magic disappearing. A deadly quiet settling over everything.
Suddenly, you felt a hand in your hair, dragging you backwards, the pain making you scream.
"Elijah!" Klaus roared into the woods, "I know you are out there, show yourself!"
You saw Elijah walk out of the trees, and into the clearing, his expression unreadable, but his eyes were locked on yours.
Klaus's fingers dug into your scalp, and he pulled harder, forcing you to your knees between them.
"What a sight," Klaus mocked, grinning at Elijah.
"Hello, brother," Elijah said, his eyes still locked on yours.
"You've come to kill me?" Klaus said, chuckling. "How is that working out for you?"
He pulled you back to your feet, your whole body trembling.
"Actually, I've come to make you an offer," Elijah said, taking a step closer, his hands clasped behind his back.
"Oh," Klaus said, amused. "An offer, I wonder what that might be,"
"Spare them, and I will pledge my loyalty to you," Elijah said, his voice soft, his eyes never leaving yours.
"You're lying," Klaus growled, his hand wrapping around your throat, his fangs grazing your skin. "You're only offering yourself, so I won't kill her. That's not true loyalty,"
You saw Damon lift Elena's body into his arms, carrying her to Stefan. Then he pulled the stake out of Stefan's back, allowing him to move again.
"Elijah," Stefan called, his voice shaky. "You need to finish this,"
"I can't," he said, shaking his head. "Klaus will kill her,"
Damon rushed to Bonnie's side, trying to wake her up, and Klaus laughed, his lips pressed against your ear.
"Run to your love, if you make it I'll let you live," he whispered, shoving you forward.
You stumbled, your legs barely able to support you, then you started running towards Elijah, tears streaming down your face.
You made it to him, and his arms wrapped around you, holding you tight, he was murmuring soft words into your ear, his breath tickling your skin. And you finally felt safe again.
"Are you okay?" He asked, pulling away to look at you, his fingers brushing the hair from your face.
"Yes," you said softly, your hand gripping his jacket.
You were staring up at him, his brown eyes were warm and full of worry, and you had forgotten how much you missed him.
"Good," he murmured, pressing his forehead against yours.
Your lips met his at the same time you felt something strange in your back. An odd pressure that made you gasp into his mouth.
You pulled away from Elijah, there was a strange look on his face, his mouth falling open, and he looked down at you, a look of pure terror in his eyes.
For the first time in centuries, you felt cold, the world was spinning around you. You knew what was happening,
Your hand pressed against his chest, you could feel his heart beating against your palm. You looked up into his brown eyes one last time.
"Rule three, my love," you whispered, before your life faded away, and your body fell against him.
Elijah looked down at you, your skin rapidly turning gray, your eyes vacant. Then he looked up at Klaus, who held your heart in his hands.
"This is for betraying me," Klaus said, dropping the organ at his feet, the blood running down the stone steps.
Elijah stood there, his arms wrapped around your lifeless body, his whole world was crumbling.
He could hear Stefan and Damon screaming, but it sounded far away, the own beating of his heart drowning out the rest.
Klaus grabbed Elijah by the neck, forcing him to drop your body, and shoved him to the ground.
"Look at her, the way she's staring up at the stars, it's quite beautiful, isn't it?" Klaus mocked, as Elijah watched you, lifeless on the cold stone. "And it's all because of you,"
Elijah looked away, a tear falling down his cheek, his brother's words cutting into him.
"You're pathetic," Klaus hissed, his hands gripping Elijah's jacket, your blood staining the fabric. "To think you could beat me,"
Elijah closed his eyes, trying to block out his brother's words, but it was no use, his mind was replaying every moment with you. Knowing he would never taste your lips again, or hear your laugh. You would never fall asleep in his arms.
He looked over at Damon, who had rushed to your body. He was holding you, rocking you back and forth in his arms, with Stefan by his side, his face stained with tears, a look of anguish on his face.
Elijah's world was fading away, as he was overcome with rage and anguish, a darkness consuming him, and Klaus just kept talking, his voice becoming more and more distant.
Then something within him snapped, a creature that was lurking underneath his skin came bursting through, a monster taking the place of the gentleman.
He turned his attention back to his brother, and Klaus froze, the fear clear in his eyes.
Damon watched as Elijah pushed Klaus backwards, causing him to fly across the clearing, skidding along the dirt, landing a few feet away.
Elijah walked in a slow, deliberate pace towards Klaus , his expression devoid of any emotion.
"You're right, Klaus," Elijah said, a cold smile spreading across his face. "We are not the same,"
Klaus tried to stand, but Elijah shoved him back down, he grabbed Klaus leg and twisted it until it snapped. Klaus howled in agony, and Elijah smiled, twisting the other leg, and his brother's screams were echoing through the night.
"You want to be a beast?" Elijah growled, pulling Klaus into the air by his neck, his hands wrapped around his throat. "Let me help you,"
Damon felt a gentle hand on his shoulder, and Bonnie was standing there, her eyes full of sorrow.
"Damon," she whispered, tears running down her face.
"Go, help Elijah," he said, his voice hollow. "I'll stay here with her,"
Bonnie nodded, she stood up, her body trembling. Stefan jumped to his feet to help her stay upright, and she began to chant once more.
The altar burst into flames for a third time, illuminating Klaus and Elijah in a ring of fire as they struggled against each other.
"What is this?" Klaus yelled, pushing Elijah away, trying to fight the pain. "What have you done?"
"Something that should have been done centuries ago," Elijah growled, rushing towards his brother, knocking him down, pinning him to the dirt, his hand raised.
"In the name of our family, Niklaus...," Elijah said, plunging his hand into his brother's chest, curing his fingers around Klaus's heart. "In the name of her..."
"I didn't bury them at sea!" Klaus yelled, his hand trying to pry Elijah's away. "They are safe, I swear,"
Elijah looked at him, a flicker of hope in his eyes.
"I can take you to them," Klaus pleaded, his hands gripping Elijah's wrist. “Their bodies are safe. If you kill me, you'll never find them,”
"Elijah, don't listen to him," Stefan yelled, walking towards them.
"Brother, please," Klaus begged. "She wouldn't want this, please,"
Your beautiful face flashed through Elijah's mind, and he looked back at Damon, who was kneeling there, tears in his eyes, clutching your body.
"You're wrong, Klaus," Elijah growled, his hand squeezing the organ in his grip. "She would want this,"
Then he tore Klaus's heart from his chest, and watched the life fade from his brother's eyes.
Klaus's body dropped to the ground, his heart still beating in Elijah's hand, and the flames died down, leaving the clearing in silence.
Bonnie walked up to him, looking down at the flames.
"Good," She said, her voice hoarse.
Elijah looked back at Stefan and Damon, they were kneeling next to your body, Stefan's hand caressing your cheek.
Elijah rushed over to you, looking down at your peaceful face, you almost looked like you were sleeping.
Elijah brushed the hair from your face, his hands were shaking. He couldn't understand how something so beautiful could be snuffed out so easily.
"Don't touch her," Damon said, pulling you away from Elijah.
"You did this," Damon snapped, glaring at Elijah. "It's your fault she's dead,"
Elijah nodded and stepped away, Damon was right, it was his fault.
"Damon," Stefan said, reaching for his brother.
"No, he has to answer for this," Damon said, getting to his feet, your body in his arms.
"It's over Damon," Bonnie said softly, looking up at him. "It's over,"
Damon looked down at you, and tears started to stream down his cheeks. He was shaking, and Stefan reached for him, the two of them clinging to each other, your body between them.
"I think it's best you leave," Bonnie said, her eyes filled with sadness. "Please, go,"
Elijah nodded, his heart breaking as he looked down at your lifeless form, knowing this was his fault.
"Where will you go?" Stefan asked, as he wiped his eyes.
"I need to find my siblings," he said softly, looking away from the sight. "With Klaus dead, everyone he compelled will be free, I'll follow the clues they left behind,"
He looked back at you, and his heart shattered.
"Will you be okay?" Stefan asked, his hand on Elijah's shoulder.
"One day," he replied, turning to look at him, a small smile on his face.
"Thank you," Stefan said softly.
Elijah gave them a small nod, then disappeared into the trees, heading far away from Mystic Falls. His heart forever bound to yours.

~Epilogue
Time changes all things, this was something Damon had the basics of understanding, but nothing could prepare him for how it would affect him when he became human again.
He was an old man, something he never expected to experience, and yet there he was.
"Are you ready?" Elena asked, her hand on his arm.
"Always," he answered, his voice weak, but his smile was genuine.
She leaned in and kissed his cheek, her eyes still as bright and beautiful as the day he met her.
The walk to the Salvatore family crypt was slow, and the pain in his joints was unbearable. He hated getting old.
They entered the stone building, and Damon let go of Elena's arm, making his way over to your stone. He placed his hand on it, the smoothness soothing his calloused hand.
"Hi sis," he said, smiling down at the stone. "It's been a while, i've been so busy,"
He took a seat in the chair next to your grave, he had brought it decades ago. He was a man who liked his comfort, and he spent hours talking to you, catching you up on everything that had happened since the last time he was there.
"I have grandkids now! Can you believe it? They are the cutest, I even named a boy after you, well, the closest we could come, but, yeah," he said, a wide grin on his face.
Damon looked over at Elena, who was laying flowers at Stefan's grave. She was the only one left, and he was so grateful for her.
"I miss you and Stefan so much," Damon said softly. "But it won't be long now until I see you again,"
There was an awkward cough and Damon looked up to see a delivery boy standing in the doorway, looking uncomfortable.
"I have a delivery for Miss Y/n Salvatore," he said, walking up to him, a bouquet of flowers in his hand.
"She's not exactly up for company," Damon said with a chuckle, gesturing to your stone.
"I know, this actually isn't my first time doing this," he said, a smile spreading across his face. "Actually, the guy who use to deliver along this route said that he's been delivering here once a week for his entire fourty year career,"
Damon stood up slowly, his bones protesting the movement. He held his hand out and the boy handed him the flowers.
"Thanks, kid," Damon said, sitting back down, there was a note tucked in with the flowers.
The boy gave him a little wave before disappearing.
Elena came to sit next to him, her hand on his knee, she gave him a sad smile. "What does it say?"
Damon pulled out his glasses, and read it out loud, a tear rolling down his cheek.
For a thousand years, I had never known love, until you, and for a thousand more, I will wait for you.
-Elijah

The Avenger and Her Vampire
You had been in New York for college for only a year when your aunt called to tell you the terrible news of your parents passing. You didn't mourn with them, instead choosing to go back to school. There, you lost yourself to the grief and wound up with the wrong crowd.
For years you've ignored your family, sending emails and postcards to let them know you were okay. But now that you're returning to your childhood home, there's some very important secrets your family has been keeping from you. Then again, you've got a secret of your own as well.
Tumblr media
Words: 9.9K Author's Note: TVD AU. Slight Bonnie bashing which surprised me because I love her.
Mystic Falls would have looked exactly the same as you'd last seen it had it not been for all the suspicious men and women taking up Main Street, staring at you with suspicion as you drive by. There are even a few suspicious individuals down the street from your childhood home, so you pull up in front of your house while keeping an eye out for anyone nearby.
After parking and exiting your vehicle, you walk up towards the front door. The lights are on so you know someone's home and you readily ring the doorbell twice in a row, followed by knocking repeatedly. And then, before anyone can greet you, you open the door while sticking your head in.
"Hello! Anyone home?"
You only have to wait a few seconds before your aunt Jenna rounds the corner, her scowl immediately morphing into an elated smile. "YN!"
"Jenna!"
You push the door the rest of the way open, meeting your aunt halfway and throwing your arms around her in a hug. You grunt as she squeezes you, her embrace being a little tighter than you remember. Then when Jenna's had her fill, she pulls back while keeping her hands on your biceps, eyes narrowing suspiciously.
"What happened? Why are you home?"
"What do you mean why am I home?" You huff a laugh. "Am I not welcomed here anymore?"
"Of course you are." She lightly swats your arm, "But it's been years, YN. The most we've seen of you is on FaceTime, so I ask again. What happened?"
You keep quiet for a moment longer before sighing with a slight roll of your eyes. "I'm going abroad over summer and I won't be able to be in contact with you guys, so I thought I'd come visit before I leave."
"Knew there was a reason." Her lips twitch. "But abroad? Tell me everything!"
Laughing, you let Jenna drag you towards the kitchen while you explain that you know the Tony Stark. What had started off as an intern gig working the front desk at Stark Industries led to CEO Pepper Potts asking you to run SI's social media accounts. Then from running SI's accounts, you were then given the passwords to the Avengers' social media accounts, and asked to clean them up.
By some divine intervention, you were friends with superheroes and then one of the richest men on Earth wanted to take you abroad as his personal assistant. And not being able to turn the opportunity down, you agreed.
"Wow. So superheroes, huh? What's Thor like?"
"He's possibly one of the most intimidating beings I've ever met, but at the compound where everyone can just be themselves without the public watching he's an absolute puppy. I adore that alien of a man."
Jenna laughs. "What even is your life?"
"I know. It's insane." As Jenna goes about putting away the dishes she had washed as you spoke, you ask, "So what's going on around here?"
"What do you mean?"
"Uhhh… Mystic Falls is a picturesque little town where nothing bad ever happens." Jenna snorts, gesturing for you to go on. "So why the hell are there so many randos hanging around and looking at me like I kicked their puppy?"
Her smile falls. "What?"
"Surely you've noticed it," you muse. "They're not exactly being subtle."
"Well no, but…" Your aunt suddenly looks spooked as she starts scouring the kitchen counters. "I need to call your sister."
"Elena? Why would you-"
The front door is suddenly kicked in, followed by men shouting. You and Jenna both yelp, whirling around towards the commotion, and then there's a liquid being spritzed into your face.
You cringe back. "What the fuck!" You yell.
"She's clear!"
You're shoved to the arms of a man wearing a paintball mask, whereas others are just wearing scarves to conceal their identity. A hand clamps onto your shoulder as your eyes wildly dart over every armed individual in your childhood home.
"What do we do with this one?"
"Take her. She's a sympathizer."
"What the hell is going on?" You ask, grunting a moment later when you're shoved towards the front door.
Jenna suddenly screams and you look towards her to see her hands covering her face.
"We got one!"
"Hey, leave her alone!" You shout, trying to move to aid your aunt. But you're kept in place, both by the hand on your shoulder and by the fact that when your aunt's hands fall away, her face is… it's not human. Your jaw drops as your aunt snarls, backhanding one man before she's spritzed in the face again. As she squeals in pain, face sizzling, a unique set of handcuffs are clamped around her wrists. "Jenna?" You hesitantly call out.
When Jenna hears you, she glances directly at you, and you watch her red irritated skin heal within seconds. The dark veins beneath her eyes slowly vanish and her too sharp canines disappear. "YN?" When you can only stare at her in shock, her bottom lip wobbles. "I can explain."
Several walkies go off at the same time, stating that they have someone incoming outside. Jenna is frog marched outside and once you get your bearings, you're quick to follow. There are several jeeps in front of your house, each outfitted with guns no normal civilian should have their hands on, and many others scattered about your yard.
"Jenna!" Your sister Elena appears out of nowhere, eyes panicked. "Hey! Let her go!" As Elena tries to rush towards your aunt, she meets the same fate as your aunt previously did. Only this time, they also stab her in the abdomen with what appears to be a wooden stake after she squeals in pain when her face starts to sizzle.
As Elena doubles over with a choked off shout, you practically fall down your porch steps in order to reach your sister. "Hey! Get away from her!"
As handcuffs are clapped around her wrists, Elena looks up at you in surprise. "Y-YN?"
"I said get away!" Subconsciously, an orb of red energy fills your palm, and you release it at those surrounding your sister as if pitching a baseball without even batting an eye.
"Retreat! We got an unknown!"
Several scared men and women rush back to their vehicles, hightailing it out of there while completely forgetting about your sister and aunt. Jenna stumbles over to Elena, the two of them trying to examine the cuffs around their wrists. But each time they touch them, they hiss in pain and have to stop.
Turning towards your family once the coast is clear, you ask, "What the hell is going on?"
"W-What?" Elena glances at you, warily. "What do you mean what's going on here? What's going on with you?! How did you-"
"Uh uh. Nope. We're not talking about me right now." You step forward until you can grab onto their cuffs with each hand. Then willing energy into them, they click open seconds later and fall away from their wrists. "I just outed myself in front of asshole strangers to save you, so you're gonna tell me what the hell is happening first and how the hell you and Jenna are whatever the hell you are."
Elena opens her mouth to retort, but Jenna cuts her off. "She's right, Elena. We owe her an explanation," she says while rubbing at her wrists
Your sister glances between you and your aunt as if in disbelief, before her shoulders sag and she heaves a sigh. "Fine. But I need to get everyone else here. This involves them too."
"Then get them here."
. . . .
Nearly an hour and a half later, well after the sun has gone down, you're sitting in your childhood living room while rubbing your temple from the onslaught of information your sister and friends have dropped on you.
Doppelgangers, vampires, werewolves, witches, hybrids… the supernatural is very real and if you weren't friends with real life aliens, you'd have trouble believing everything you've been told.
"So let me get this straight- you," you say while looking at apparently a thousand year old hybrid with a ridiculously cute dimpled grin, "killed my aunt and turned her into a vampire to be used when you sacrificed my sister to break your curse, but you had a change of heart and used someone else instead, and now everyone's just cool with each other?"
"Something like that," Klaus Mikaelson muses.
You shake your head. "And you," you say while looking at his sister Rebekah, "actually got my sister killed which led her to waking up in transition to a vampire?"
"Mmm, yes." The blonde is oddly proud of that moment, it seems, as she smirks.
"Jesus…" you mumble.
"It's not like we're actually friends," Bonnie Bennet, witch extraordinaire, says. "Originals are just hard to kill and even if we did find a way to kill them, they're linked to their sire lines."
"You say that as if I should know what that means," you deadpan.
Bonnie really tries not to roll her eyes as Klaus and Rebekah chuckle at your attitude.
"What it means, love, is that if we kill one Original, then every vampire they turned and every vampire those turned, and so on and so forth, all die," Enzo tells you.
"Vampire extinction," Jeremy mumbles.
"We're just covering our own asses by inviting the Mikaelson family," Damon Salvatore says with a shrug. "If they're left out of the loop and someone miraculously kills them, they kill us too."
"Sounds fair." You shrug. "So now that I'm all caught up about you guys, does anyone care to fill me in on what the hell happened tonight? Who the hell are these randos walking around like vigilante military?"
"Someone saw something they weren't supposed to and went to my mom," Caroline says, "but since mom already knew about the supernatural, she tried to dissuade them so as not to reveal the secret."
"Only that didn't work and something is amplifying the fear of these locals and others they've invited to town into hunting down the nonhuman," Stefan Salvatore tells you.
You glance at Bonnie while wiggling your fingers. "Can't you just magic away the issue? What's good being a witch if you can't spell away the problem?"
"Finally! Thank you," Rebekah huffs.
Bonnie sneers at the Original vampire before crossing her arms and glaring at you. "I've tried. Whatever this is, is immune to my magic."
"What about you?" Elena asks.
You frown. "What about me?"
"Jenna and I saw what you did," she says. "Couldn't you-" It's her turn to wiggle her fingers, causing you to grin.
"What do you mean what she did?" Jeremy asks, glancing between you and your other sister. "What happened?"
"She threw this red blast of energy and knocked some guys on their asses," Jenna says, far too impressed with you now that she knows the new you isn't a threat. You're still the same niece she watched grow up.
Everyone glances at you and you sink into your seat. "YN, what happened to you?" Elena asks, wanting to understand.
"I fell in with the wrong crowd after mom and dad died," you tell the room at large. "They had some powers of their own, that I didn't know about until way later, and they apparently sought me out after sensing some very weak magic in me."
"You have magic?" Bonnie stands a little taller. "But we thought only Elena had magic in her blood because of the Petrova bloodline."
"Well, there's apparently magic in the Gilbert or Sommers bloodline," you say. "Anyway, this group used my grief to manipulate me. When they had my trust, they exposed me to a crystal that amplified the magic that was already in me." You raise a hand in front of you, letting a small orb of red energy develop and dance between your fingers. "They call it chaos magic."
"Holy shit," you hear someone breathe in awe.
"In the beginning, I was excited. I was special," you tell them, losing yourself to the memory. "But then one really bad situation led me to losing control of my emotions and…" You close your hand into a fist, and your hand glows brighter and brighter before you flick your fingers open. A short wave of red energy expands outward before dissipating. As you blink out of the memory, you catch sight of everyone staring at you, tense. You shrug. "I, uh, I wanted help after that. I didn't want to accidentally hurt someone, so I sought out someone who could help."
"Who could help with that?" Your sister asks.
"I wasn't too sure, but I sought out Steve Rogers."
"Captain America?!" Your brother practically shouts. "You sought out an American Icon!?"
"Don't say it like that." Your nose wrinkles. "Steve's more than what the government dubbed him as."
"Wait," Jenna speaks up, frowning. "So, is what you told me earlier true? Are you really going abroad with Tony Stark as his assistant or…?"
"Ehh…" You squeak, shrugging.
"YN…" Her eyes narrow and you sheepishly smile.
"It's more of a mission rather than a job opportunity."
"A mission?"
"Surprise!" You give them jazz hands, chuckling nervously now. "I may or may not be an Avenger in training."
"WHAT?!" Out of everyone, your brother Jeremy is most excited. "You're gonna be a superhero?!"
"I'm gonna try to be," you say. "Apparently my morals are a little skewed, so I'm gonna be on probation for a while."
Enzo smirks. "Where has this Gilbert been all my life?"
"Right?" Damon muses, earning a punch from Elena and a chuckle from nearly everyone else.
"Anyway, I-" Nearly as one, every vampire perks up and looks towards the door. "Uhh, what's happening?"
Stefan frowns. "It sounds like a drone." And sure enough, moments later after the words leave his mouth, a drone passes by one of the front windows.
"A drone?" Rebekah scoffs. "How cowardly of them."
Everyone makes their way outside, hesitating on the porch, while only the Original family and Enzo head down onto the front lawn. The drone continues to hover noisily until Klaus leaps and snatches it from the air. Pulling an envelope that had been taped to it, he then crushes the drone and tosses it aside.
"Oh. They sent a note," Rebekah muses. "That's very quaint of them."
Her brothers huff in amusement as Klaus quickly scans the note. Summarizing it, he says, "They want a meeting with the new threat in the clearing next to the Welcome to Mystic Falls sign."
"No. No way," Elena says.
"It's a trap." Damon's eyes roll. "No one's going anywhere. We need to come up with a plan to catch them off guard."
"What better way to catch them off guard than actually showing up?" You wonder, moving to step down the porch steps, but keeping your hand on the porch railing. "They have no idea what I'm capable of. They're idiots to call me out."
Jeremy shakes his head. "They'll see you as a sympathizer and shoot first, ask questions later."
"That's assuming they'll even get a shot in."
"YN, think about this," Jenna says. "You don't know what you're up against."
"And apparently neither do you," you retort. "Your witch has yet to protect this town, so it's time some new blood takes the lead for a bit."
Bonnie scoffs. "Be my guest."
"Well, if you're going, then I'm going," Elena says.
"Me too," Jeremy agrees.
"You're not leaving without me," Jenna then says.
Glancing over your shoulder, you smirk as you will your power to gather. "Good luck leaving the house then," you muse. Immediately your eyes flash red and a red shimmer envelops the house and porch.
"What?" You laugh as you jump off the porch steps. "What did you do?" Elena steps forward to follow but runs into an invisible shield. "YN!"
"What?" You feign innocence. "The way I see it, every one of you is vulnerable. Bullets and stakes can't harm an Original the way they can harm all of you."
"Enzo's not an Original," Elena says, eyes narrowing.
"No, but Enzo was already down here, so…" You shrug. "And besides, he's cute. I need something pretty to look at in case I die out there."
"YN, let us out," Elena says, shaking her head. "You're in over your head."
"No."
"Bonnie!" Elena whirls around, but even as Bonnie closes her eyes to chant, your shield doesn't waver.
The witch frowns. "I can't. This is magic I've never come across before."
"Of course you haven't. I'm apparently one of a kind." You wink and then look back at Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, and Enzo. "So, are you coming with or not? I may need a lift if you guys are running there."
"Darling, it'll be my pleasure," Enzo says. You giggle as he swoops you up into a bridal carry, running with you as if you didn't weigh much.
You have to close your eyes given how fast Enzo is running, but when he stops and starts to put you down, you open them and look around. You're near the meeting place, watching the vampires stare off in one direction as they listen to something only they can hear.
"What's going on?" You murmur.
"There's more than we anticipated," Rebekah murmurs back. "And they're all armed."
"Wonderful." Everyone continues to listen and quietly plan their next move, and eventually you grow restless. "Screw this. I'm going in."
"No. Wait!"
The vampires hiss threats at you, but you roll your eyes and continue forward. Walking through the tall grass, you keep your eyes peeled for anyone lingering on the sides. You don't see anything out of the norm and eventually you come upon a group of men and women.
Shockingly, it's a woman who steps forward and who you assume is in charge. "Who are you?" She asks.
"Who am I?" You muse. "Who are you? You came into my home and attacked us, after all."
The woman has a swagger to her to step as she stops a couple yards in front of you, crossing her arms over her chest with a self-satisfied smirk. "We hunt vampires. We're ridding the world of these monsters, but you were a surprise. So again, who are you?"
"YN Gilbert," you tell her. "And you attacked my aunt and sister. So, you and I, we have a problem."
"Your family are monsters. And so are you." As soon as the words leave her mouth, all the armed individuals behind her raise their weapons and green lasers center on your chest. Glancing down at all the moving dots, you laugh. "Those vampire friends of yours might be invulnerable to bullets, but are you?"
"There's only one way to find out." At your side, your right hand starts to glow. You hear murmurs of distress and you smirk as you glance at the woman in charge. "Then again, you're a moment too late. You should have had them take the shot when you had the chance."
Before she can get a word out, you raise your hand and flick your wrist. The red energy enveloping your hand disperses, and you watch as every person who had their weapon trained on you goes rigid as their eyes briefly glow red. From one second to the next, they all turn and train their weapons on their boss.
"Have fun convincing your friends you're not the monster." Turning around, your steps briefly falter as the vampires stare at you in amusement. You hadn't even heard them come up behind you. "What?"
Elijah's lips twitch. "What did you do to them?"
"A little mind control, I think. We should get out of here and regroup so I can figure out our next move. I'm not sure how long our new friends will be under."
"What all are you capable of?" Klaus asks, eyeing you warily.
"Dunno. I'm still figuring that out. Now can we go? I'm pretty sure everyone at my house is pretty pissed given I locked them in."
"My family and I actually have something to take care of in New Orleans," Klaus says.
"We would appreciate it if you kept us in the loop," Elijah then tells you.
"Sure. I can get your number from someone when there's something to tell." The Mikaelson siblings disappear after agreeing and you turn to glance at Enzo with a grin. "And then there were two." You step closer, reaching for him so he can prepare to hold you again. "Let's go, handsome, before the people with guns come out of the little trance they're under."
He huffs a laugh as your arms go around his neck and you jump so he's forced to catch you. "As you wish."
Tumblr media
The next morning you groggily walk downstairs, yawning and stepping into the kitchen where Stefan is surprisingly cooking.
"Morning," you sleepily mumble.
He smiles. "Morning. Sleep okay?"
You wrinkle your nose while making yourself a cup of coffee and think about why you didn't have that great of a sleep. After what happened to your aunt and sister, Elena didn't want anyone unprotected. Tyler and Caroline still opted to go home to keep an eye on their mothers, but everyone else decided to stay at the Gilbert house. Bonnie slept in Jeremy's room, Damon in Elena's, Stefan called dibs on the couch, and you felt bad that Enzo would have to sleep on the recliner. Instead, you offered to share with him so long as he knew there'd be no funny business.
"If I had known Enzo hogs the blanket, I'd have never offered to share my bed out of the goodness of my heart."
Stefan chuckles. "Would breakfast put you in a better mood?"
"Mmm. What'd you make?"
"There's eggs, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns, and toast."
You take a sip of your coffee before you stand. "I'll make my own eggs," you tell him. "I'm apparently picky with how they're made."
Stefan grins while stepping aside, watching as you find a small pan for your eggs. You crack three in the pan, scrambling them. Then while letting them cook for a moment, you head to the refrigerator to grab a bag of shredded cheese. Once they're nearly done to how you like them, you sprinkle a handful of cheese so the heat melts it just right.
"Cheesy eggs," you muse while plating them. "This is now the only way I can eat them."
Stefan grabs a fork and tries a forkful from the pan, humming a moment later. "Huh. Those are pretty good."
"Right?"
The two of you eat in peace before the rest of the house starts waking up. Jenna and Enzo join you right before Damon and Elena, and then Bonnie says a quick hello before taking her leave to get a jump on trying to figure out what's going on. Jeremy is the last to show up and you swat at his hand when he tries to steal your bacon.
"So, what's the plan for today?" Jeremy asks.
You shrug. "Probably roam the town and see if I can sense anything. Elena, nor Jenna, can tag along because those people know they're vampires."
"We're out of the running because they've been keeping an eye on the boarding house," Damon says.
"Which leaves me," Enzo smirks.
Jeremy huffs. "And me."
"Yeah, but you're only human, baby Gilbert."
Your brother grumbles and you laugh as you ruffle his hair. "Don't worry. I'll protect you and the pretty vampire from any threats."
Elena is not happy that you're going out on your own with only Enzo as vampire backup, but you tell her if she wants to involve herself then she can go help her witchy bestie. She's not impressed, but you couldn't care less, and you head out once Jeremy is done with breakfast.
"Someone else drive," you say while tossing your keys over your shoulder. "I need to sit in the back and somewhat concentrate."
"All you, mate," you hear Enzo say. "I just wanna sit pretty in the passenger seat."
"Yeah, yeah. Whatever."
You slide into the back of your car, scooting towards the middle and letting Jeremy settle behind the wheel while Enzo makes himself comfortable in the passenger seat.
"So, what exactly are we doing?" Jeremy asks.
"No idea. Just drive up and down every street. If something gives me the heebie jeebies, I'll speak up and we'll check it out."
"And if you don't sense anything out of the norm?"
"Then we go back home and try again later." He looks at you through the rearview mirror and you sigh. "Jer, just drive. I love Elena, but I really don't wanna deal with all her questions right now."
"But you'll answer mine, right?"
"Ugh. If I must."
"Cool. So, what's it like living with superheroes?" He asks, starting your car and pulling away from the curb.
"It was fun, but a bit chaotic."
"Because of all the enemies the Avengers have?"
"No, because half of them act like children." You huff a laugh, remembering some of your fonder moments with them. "Hawkeye likes to hide the vents and start unexpected nerf wars. Captain America and the Winter Soldier know no boundaries, and I usually found one or both sitting at my kitchen table and eating all my food when they forgot to order their groceries. And Iron Man likes to know any and every dirty detail of a person's life."
"What about the Black Widow?" Jeremy muses.
"She's more of a meddling teenager. Kept trying to set me up with people."
Jeremy laughs. "Who?"
"First it was Steve, then when she realized I had a type she reluctantly guided me in Loki's direction."
Enzo turns in his seat. "The God of Mischief? She tried setting you up with the God of Mischief?"
"Yep." You pop the 'p' and grin. "Almost sealed the deal too, but Thor's a cockblock and he got called back to Asgard before anything interesting could happen."
"Good. You can do better than the god of mischief who once wanted to take over Earth," your brother mumbles.
"Oh yeah?" You scoot forward so you can peer into the front between your brother and Enzo. "So, what are your thoughts on blood sucking vampires?"
"Gross!" Enzo barks out a laugh and Jeremy's attention is divided between the road and his passenger. "You better have not seduced my sister, Enzo!"
"I didn't, mate, but I did think about it."
You're laughing now, punching Enzo's shoulder while you tell your brother, "Give me some credit. I don't sleep with people on the same day I meet them."
"The vampires are off limits."
"Come on," you groan. "I need to have some fun before I leave. It's either this vampire or the other vampire with the accent."
"The other vampire with an acc- Klaus? You wanna bone Klaus?!"
Your lips twitch while you try to remain serious. "One or the other. You gotta pick one."
"No. Not only no, but hell no!"
You and Enzo are laughing again, and Jeremy grumbles while watching where he's driving.
For the rest of the drive, you divide your attention by teasing your brother with your attraction to the vampire in the passenger seat, and trying to sense anything out of the norm. Unfortunately, nothing feels off to you and Jeremy ends up driving back home.
"Better luck next time, yeah?" Enzo says while exiting the vehicle.
"Yeah. Until then, I'm gonna nap. Wake me up for lunch," you tell Jeremy.
Tumblr media
For days you drive around Mystic Falls at random times, but you don't find anything. You even try to meditate and cast out a mental net, but again you come up with nothing.
Not even Bonnie has any luck and when you start to get aggravated because you know people are watching your family and their friends, Enzo decides to get you out of the house without any chaperones.
"Dinner at the Mystic Grill? How romantic of you," you tiredly tease him.
"We can always have dinner with your family and the Salvatore's, love."
"Mystic Grill is perfect."
"Thought so."
While you and Enzo wait for your food, you talk a little bit more.
"So is Mystic Falls permanent or were you visiting when all hell broke loose?" You wonder.
"Visiting. I'm a bit of a wanderer." Enzo tells you as he pops a piece of tortilla chip into his mouth. "What about you? What are your plans after your vacation is up?"
"Well, my trip is pretty confidential, but I'll be gone for two weeks before heading back to New York."
"And is New York permanent?"
"Yep. It wasn't always, but after gaining these powers of mine it's kind of where I have to be now."
Enzo smirks. "Will you be allowed visitors?"
"Of course." You laugh. "But the superheroes are nosy and it won't be long until they figure out your secret if you start visiting me."
"A price I will have to pay if it means I can have sleepovers with my favorite Gilbert."
Heat embarrassingly blooms in your cheeks as you toss a piece of torn napkin at him, making him chuckle. Thankfully, the waitress shows up with your food and you're saved from retorting by biting into your chicken sandwich.
You eat in peace, only having to stop a few times to greet old friends and old friends of your parents when they realize you're back. When it's all said and done, Enzo can't stop smiling at you as you leave the Grill and start walking towards Main Square.
"What?"
"I didn't know you were so popular."
"That's what happens when you're the golden child of two of the most respected individuals in town."
"Ah, yes. Your father."
You wince. "Sorry. I forgot you said that he- and Augustine."
"Water under the bridge, love. Besides, you were only a child when all that went down."
As you continue to walk, your arms cross over your chest and Enzo's thumbs end up hooked in his front pockets. He tells you about his turning and the identity of his sire which sets you off into a round of giggles as you tell him he's basically the baby of the Salvatore clan. He huffs, but finds amusement in your amusement.
You're then telling him all about the one time Tony Stark took you out for drinks and you ended up with the worst hangover of your life when a sudden sense of dread washes over you. You stumble and Enzo reaches for your elbow, and you immediately glance around at your surroundings.
"What's wrong?"
"You don't feel that?" You ask, your left hand reaching for your chest as your heart starts to pound with fear. "Fuck. Whoever's responsible for igniting panic in Mystic Falls is here. I can- I feel like-"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Take a breath, sweetheart."
"M'trying." You try to catch your breath while reinforcing a mental shield around your mind. As the seconds slowly tick on by, you eventually get yourself under control. As your gaze scans your surroundings, you find someone standing under the clock tower. And when you clock them, they immediately tense and try to scurry off. "There."
When Enzo sees where you're looking, he speeds off and you start walking until you're in the middle of Main Square. Enzo reappears with a struggling woman by his side and he rolls his eyes. "Enough." He grips her bicep a little tighter, jerking her so she gets the memo to stop trying to escape. "Explain yourself."
"Yes. Please do," you drawl.
"H-How did you fight off the f-fear?" She asks instead, glancing between you and Enzo. "No one is supposed t-to be able to."
"I'm one of a kind," you deadpan. "Now explain yourself."
"The vampires have taken over. I needed to protect everyone!"
"Vampires are the least of your worries." You huff. "So what if they take a sip from a local or three? You should be grateful the vampires keep the worst threats from stepping foot here."
She shakes her head. "You're wrong. This vampire has used his mind tricks on you!"
"That's where you're wrong, girlie," Enzo muses. "Miss Gilbert here can't be compelled. You, however-"
"Wait." You stop Enzo from trying to compel the girl. "How did you do it?" You ask her. "How are you riling the locals and their friends up? How are you controlling their fear?" As you were asking her questions, you took notice that her hand reached up to grasp the tiny jar that had been hanging around her neck. She shakes her head, refusing to answer, and you reach forward with quick reflexes to pull the necklace from around her neck. "What's this then?"
"Don't!" She tries to lunge for it, but Enzo holds her in place.
"Why? It's just a-" An unseen force hits you square in the chest, throwing you off your feet and sends you flying. You land on your back with a grunt and within a second Enzo is there to help you up back to feet. "What the fuck was that?" You mumble.
"I don't know."
When you get your bearings, you glance back at the woman who fidgets nervously with something inhuman and grotesque standing right behind her shoulder. You scoff at her, gripping her necklace tight in hand. "Are you kidding me? You want to rid the town of vampires, yet you have a fuckin' demon at your beck and call? Hypocrite."
"He's helping me."
"He's feeding off of you, idiot!" You shout back at her. "He's just feeding differently than a vampire does, but I guarantee you he's feeding from you."
"N-No. He said-"
"Demons lie," Enzo tells her. "I wouldn't be surprised if he's leeching off your soul and every other soul he instills fear in. You're not helping anyone. You're hurting them."
She gasps and stumbles away from the demon, trembling when its milky white eyes turn on her. "I-Is that true?"
The demon gives a nonchalant shrug and you shake your head in disappointment at the girl. Her eyes fill with tears. "I didn't- I didn't want-"
"How do I get rid of it?" You ask. "What's so important about the necklace?"
When the demon looks at you and takes a step in your direction, she says, "Break it. Breaking the jar breaks the spell. Everyone will go back to normal too."
The demon hisses and you roll your eyes while throwing the necklace down and letting Enzo stomp on it. As soon as the glass breaks, the demon squeals before vanishing in a poof of smoke.
You frown. "Well, that was anticlimactic."
Enzo snorts and then gestures towards the trembling woman. "What do we do with her?"
"Please don't kill me!" She cries. "I only wanted to help."
"I'm not going to kill you." You roll your eyes. "But you are going to take me to your house so I can gather everything that will remind you of the supernatural. Then I'm going to make you forget everything you know about us and make it so you never have to worry ever again."
"P-Promise?"
"Promise."
. . . .
An hour later, you and Enzo are going through boxes of occult paraphernalia that you'd taken from the woman's home. You had texted your sister to text Bonnie to meet you at the house, so you were currently waiting for the witch to show.
"I can't believe the villain was so utterly human who got lucky with the right books," Enzo drawls.
"Right? And to think- oh, pretty!" You cut yourself off, picking up a small crystal globe. "Do you think this is harmless?"
Enzo snorts. "I don't know, love. Ask the Bennett witch. She's walking up the porch steps right now."
Bonnie doesn't bother to knock, instead just walking right on in. She walks into the living room, exhaling softly as she takes in you and Enzo. "What happened? Did you find any new leads?"
"Did I find any new leads?" You muse, chuckling. She doesn't look impressed with you. "I found the problem and took care of it. Vampires can now roam around without fear that someone is going to stake them."
She stands a little taller. "What?"
"It was a normal civilian," Enzo says, "who got lucky with the right occult shop. She summoned a fear demon and didn't realize that while it was riling everyone up, it was also feeding on them."
"So we broke the spell, put the mind whammy on the woman who was causing you issues, and cleaned out her supernatural paraphernalia," you say while gesturing to the boxes in front of you. "I figured this stuff was better off in your hands than in someone else who would try their hand at summoning."
Bonnie steps further into the room to get a look in the boxes. "O-Oh. And this woman, she's okay?"
"Yes. Just because I have magic now doesn't make me a monster, Bonnie. The woman is fine and doesn't remember a thing."
"She also has the urge to better her life," Enzo says. "And if you don't believe us, we'll give you her address so you can check her out for yourself."
"No. It's fine," she says. "I just- I guess I'm so used to Damon solving our problems by killing the issue rather than solving it without bloodshed."
"Aren't you glad I'm not Damon." Bonnie finally cracks a grin at you and you raise the crystal globe so she can see it. "So do you think it's safe to keep this? It's really pretty."
Her and Enzo both snort, and she holds her hand out for it. "Let me see." You hand it over and you watch as she closes her eyes, muttering under her breath. After a few seconds, her eyes open and she passes it back to you. "It's fine. I don't think she ever had a chance to use it."
"Score." You keep the small globe and then gesture to the boxes. "All yours then, Bennet. Don't go summoning demons now."
She chuckles. "I won't."
Enzo helps her load the car with her new possessions and then he's looming over you as you sit on the couch. "What?" You slowly grin at him.
"We have the house to ourselves."
"We've had the house to ourselves, Enzo."
"Yes, but we were expecting company. Now, we are not."
Your laugh gets cut short as you yawn. "As much as I'm looking forward to checking out your vampire stamina, I'm beat."
"Fine. Off to bed we go and then you're mine for the next few days now that you don't have to solve Mystic Falls' problems."
"Yeah. Sure."
Tumblr media
You're peacefully sleeping when you're rudely awakened by your phone. Normally you'd let it go to voicemail, but you know for a fact that you silenced it which means your phone's been hacked. And given that it's a Stark product, you have a very good feeling you know who hacked your phone for this rude awakening.
Turning onto your opposite side, reach for your phone and blindly answer it. You realize a second too late it's a video call and maneuver the phone so the camera doesn't catch anything behind you.
"Good morning, sleeping beauty!"
You groan, keeping your eyes hooded because of the too bright screen. "Fuck off, Tony. What time is it?"
"It should be six your time, I think."
"Six?!" Your eyes open wider and you shift your position just a little, pulling the blanket up higher to cover your chest. "What the hell, Tony! I barely went to sleep like three hours ago."
"Mhm. And what were you doing three hours ago? Or should I say whom?" You catch his smirk and you scowl at him.
"I don't know what you're-"
"Cut the shit. I caught a glimpse of a very muscular back when you moved just moments ago. And a head of dark hair."
"Fuck." There's a snort behind you and you turn so you're on your back, shoving at Enzo's arm. "You just had to be here, didn't you?"
"You weren't complaining three hours ago, love."
Tony practically lights up. "Did you get a boyfriend?! Romanoff is going to be so pissed she wasn't the cause of this."
"He's not my boyfriend," you grumble. "He's just… convenient."
"Mhmm. And is this convenience going to be visiting New York when you get back from our trip?"
"Enzo knows it's a probationary mission," you tell him around a yawn. "And I don't know. Maybe."
Enzo changes position so he's also on his back, sleepily smirking at you. "Definitely."
"Then he's a boyfriend. Oh, I can't wait to tell the others. Our baby superhero is growing up so fast."
"You're both annoying." You yawn again. "Was there a purpose to this call, Stark, or can we go back to sleep?"
"Not really. I just missed my second favorite human."
"Second? Does Peter know he's been usurped of his position as second favorite? If not, I call dibs on rubbing it in his face."
"Rude. But anyway, I also made you a gift. I'll ship it out later, so be expecting a package later this week."
"Ugh. Should I be worried?"
"No, but I have a feeling your new boyfriend is going to love it."
"One- not the boyfriend. And two- goodbye, Tony."
You hang up before Tony can say anything else and set your phone aside. When you turn back around, you match Enzo's position so you're lying on your side, facing him. "What do you think he's sending you?"
"No idea, but I have a feeling it's either going to be something I need or something to embarrass me."
Enzo smiles as he tucks your hair behind your ear, leaning forward and pressing a kiss to your forehead. "Alright. Go back to sleep, love. It's still dark out."
"Mmm. Okay."
Two days later, as you're sitting on the porch swing with your sister and enjoying iced tea with your siblings and aunt, a delivery truck stops in front of the house. The conversation you'd been having ceases as the driver gets out and opens up the back of his truck. Then he grabs a rather large black box, and when he maneuvers it in his arms you see Stark Industries logo emblazoned on the front.
The driver then walks up the sidewalk to your porch, glancing at everyone with a small smile. "YN Gilbert?"
"That'd be me," you say, standing to meet him.
"Cool. I'm gonna need to see some ID and then need a signature before I can hand this over."
"Sure. No problem." You head inside to retrieve your ID and then meet the guy back outside. As you hand over your ID for him to scan, you then quickly sign your name and take the box from him. "Thanks!"
"No problem. Have a good day."
When you turn around, your family is staring. "What?"
"What is it?" Elena asks.
"Yeah. Open it. I want to see."
Huffing a laugh, you gesture towards the door. You rather not open a box from Tony outside just in case it's something not meant for civilian eyes. But alas, once you get the lid off, it's nothing scandalous or confidential. In fact, it's something you were hoping you didn't have to deal with so soon.
"A supersuit!" Jeremy exclaims. "You got your own supersuit!"
"Calm down, Jer," you grumble. Picking through the paper, you pull free a top, pants, a jacket, and even what appears to be a head piece.
"Oh. That's pretty," Elena says while taking the headpiece from you and gently touching the intricate red designs. "Are these meant to be horns?"
"I'm not even sure." Underneath a pair of boots, there's a note. Picking it up, you read it aloud with a sigh. "Enjoy the last week with your family. We'll be there to pick you up next Sunday. Wear the suit. With love and excitement to see your boy toy- Tony." You huff a laugh before looking back at the box, shaking your head as your family roams their fingers over the pieces of your suit they're holding.
"What material is this?" Jenna asks.
"Do you think they can make me a Halloween costume out of any extra material they have lying around?" Jeremy wonders.
Both you and Elena snort, and you start to gather your suit from them. "I don't know and no. Now let me put this away while you guys brainstorm what we're going to do for dinner."
"Don't you have plans with Enzo?" Jeremy scowls.
"Nope. And don't make faces," you tell him. "If anyone is allowed to make faces, it's me and Elena because you're boning one of her best friends." Jeremy balks when Jenna barks out a laugh and Elena can only shrug while telling him that you're not wrong. "Besides, Enzo knows how much I love you guys and knows I should be spending all this time with you. I'll see Enzo whenever I want after I get back from my mission."
Elena arches an eyebrow at you. "He's gonna visit you in New York?"
You shrug. "He says he will, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see."
"You have that vampire wrapped around your finger," Jenna muses. "I won't be surprised if we see less and less of him once you get back to New York."
"If you say so."
Tumblr media
During the last week with your family, Elena finds it in her to not be so attached to her boyfriend. You go shopping with Jeremy and Elena, catch up on all the juiciest gossip with Jenna, and a few times you have group dinners with the Salvatore brothers, Enzo, Caroline, and Bonnie.
They try to weasel out any information you can give about where you're going, but you keep mum about it and tell them if they stop asking, then you'll let them see you off when you're to be picked up. They agree.
Then the day before you're set to leave, you're surprised when you sit down for dinner right as the doorbell rings. Everyone freezes before Jenna glances around the table, counting everyone and trying to figure out who'd be at the door.
Suddenly Elena perks up, eyes sparkling. "I got it!"
You frown at her, but Damon, Stefan, Caroline, Jenna, and Enzo seem to be the only ones who catch on as to who is possibly at the door. You, Jeremy, and Bonnie can only shrug and wait for Elena to return.
So while waiting for your sister's return, you nudge Enzo and ask for him to pass the salad bowl.
"Rabbit food, YN? Seriously?" You startle in surprise at the voice, fumbling the bowl and glancing up to see a smirking Tony. "I know for a fact you're not fond of salad."
"Tony! What are- why are you-"
"He couldn't wait," Clint muses, entering the door with several stacked pizza boxes in hand.
The door opens again and your sister ushers in another familiar face. "And neither could Barton." Natasha grins.
"Shut up, Nat. You jumped at the chance too. Don't try to play it off."
"Someone had to make sure you idiots didn't wreak too much havoc." Then glancing at the gobsmacked and/or amused faces, she introduces herself. "Hello. I'm Natasha Romanoff."
"W-We know," Jeremy stammers. "Hi. It's, uh, it's nice to meet you."
You wrinkle your nose at your brother and reluctantly stand up to show Clint where he can place the pizzas he's brought. "Everyone, I'm pretty sure you know who Tony, Clint, and Natasha are. Guys, meet my family and friends." Then one by one, you introduce them to your aunt, sister, and brother first. Then you introduce Caroline, Bonnie, and the Salvatores, and save Enzo for last.
Tony gasps in delight. "I got dibs on the chair by the boyfriend!"
"Tony!" Everyone snickers and you shake your head in disbelief as Tony makes a beeline for your vacated chair. Then glancing back at Natasha and Clint, you gesture to the kitchen island. "We're all out of chairs, so it looks like we're standing."
"That's fine," Clint muses. "I'm good at standing."
"Me too."
"Hey YN, can I get a slice of that pizza?" Your brother asks.
"Yeah. Hang on." Though your family and friends are eating spaghetti and salad, a few of them request slices of pizza of their own. You and Clint serve them up, and then return to the kitchen island to get started on your own dinner.
"So who's got embarrassing high school stories?" Tony asks.
"Well…"
"Don't even think about it, Jer-bear," you immediately blurt. "I grew up with you and Elena. I have just as much ammunition against you than you do me."
"Yeah, but the Avengers aren't my co-workers. They're yours."
Your eyes narrow. "Alright, fine." The piece of pizza you had in hand is lowered. "Once when Jeremy was thirteen and our parents left us in charge, I walked in on him-"
"You promised to never bring that up!"
The room explodes into laughter and you grin. "Try me, baby brother. I dare you."
"Fine. I don't know anything."
"You buckled so easily," Caroline teases. She then sits a little straighter, smirking at the room at large. "Well, YN was a junior when Elena, Bonnie, and I entered high school, so-"
"I got dirt on you too, Forbes. I even have pictures before your HBIC days. Do you really wanna try me?"
Her smirk falls. "I burned all those."
"As if I didn't make doubles or even triples." Caroline pouts and goes back to twirling her spaghetti on her fork. "Does anyone else wanna try me then? Hmm." You glance at Bonnie who shakes her head with a grin and Jenna who arches an eyebrow at you. "Remember, Jen, I was there for every sloppy relationship and one night stand. I was eavesdropping long before you ever knew."
Jenna deflates. "I hate nosy children."
You bark out a laugh and happily pick up your pizza, taking a bite out of it. Tony frowns. "And here I thought I'd get some juicy blackmail on you, Gilbert."
"Keep it up, Tony, and I'll narc on you to Pepper. We both know she adores me."
"Yeah, yeah."
"So why are you guys here?" You ask, eating some more. "I thought I was supposed to be picked up tomorrow."
"Stark wanted to make sure the suit fit," Natasha says. "Have you tried it on?"
"Nope."
"Why not?" Tony squawks. "It's yours! I thought you'd jump at the chance to wear a suit made specifically for you."
"I've been bonding with the family." You roll your eyes. "Excuse me if I didn't want to squeeze myself into a suit and be gawked at."
"Hey, be glad it's not a catsuit like mine," Natasha muses. "Yours looks loads more comfortable."
"You guys aren't going to let this go until I try it on, aren't you?"
"Try it on! Try it on!" Jeremy starts to chant, followed by Caroline. "Try it on!"
"I hate you all."
Taking one last vicious bite out of your pizza, you drop it on your plate and leave to head upstairs to your room.
As soon as YN disappears from the kitchen, Tony turns towards Enzo. "So what are you intentions with the baby of the Avengers? Because let me tell you something, Lorenzo St. John, I know everything about you, the Salvatores, aunt Jenna, sister Elena, and friend Caroline."
The room goes deathly quiet and still, and Clint snorts. "Why do you guys look so shocked? You didn't think we'd be stupid to not investigate everything going on in this town, did you?"
"How?" Caroline wonders. "The council doesn't exist anymore and my mom knows better than to put that type of information on any electronic device where it can be hacked."
"Well someone was dumb enough to keep an electronic journal," Natasha muses, still casually eating as everyone else is too tense to move. "And while vampires and witches," she makes eye contact with Bonnie then, "all sound very whimsical, given our line of work we have to believe that there was an ounce of truth somewhere in there. So we dug and dug until we found pictures of the Salvatore brothers from way back in the day. There wasn't much on St. John, but there was quite the information dump on the Original family."
"So again I will ask," Tony says. "What are your intentions with YN?"
"Nothing. We're just having fun." Enzo shrugs. "I like the girl and we're just taking it day by day."
"Does she know about all of you?"
"She does," Jenna finally speaks up. "She showed up right before a group of men broke into my house and tried to take me by force."
Clint stands a little taller and Enzo waves him off. "Fear demon riled up some locals, but YN took care of it. All is fine now."
"What about this Original family?" Tony asks. "Do we need to worry about them?"
No one says anything and surprisingly it's Bonnie who speaks up. "They like to toe the line, but so long as they're left alone, it should be fine."
"They've racked up quite the body count." Natasha arches an eyebrow at her.
"So have Damon and Stefan." Bonnie shrugs. "But the Salvatores have learned from their past and live peacefully now. The Mikaelson family does their own thing, but so long as their family is not threatened, they stay under the radar. I doubt they want the government hounding them."
"We'll leave them alone for now, but the second they start making waves-"
"They'll behave." Damon rolls his eyes. "Klaus saw just a fraction of what YN can do and I doubt he wants her tapping into that power to subdue him. They might have a very powerful witchy sister back in New Orleans, but-"
"But YN's power is different than what the ancestors have shown us," Bonnie says. "No matter the experience of the witch, I have a feeling YN can easily outpower any of them."
"Shit. Really?" Now Tony looks intrigued, but before he can ask more about it, the kitchen door swings open.
"There. Happy?" You deadpan.
Everyone falls quiet and Enzo turns his seat to take a look at you. You mentally preen when you see his eyes subtly widen before looking you up and down, and then a leering smirk graces his features. "Hello, gorgeous."
Tumblr media
You huff a laugh and flick his forehead as Caroline gushes. "Oh my god. You look so good in that!"
"It is comfortable," you reluctantly admit. "And I'm immensely grateful that my cleavage isn't out for all to see," you say while glancing down at the black and burgundy top of your suit. "And what even is this skirt or whatever it is?" You ask, turning sideways so you can point out the piece of material that's connected to the back bottom half of your top to give off the illusion of you wearing a cloak without really wearing one.
Tony shrugs. "Thought it looked neat. Do you want it gone?"
"Well, no…"
"Question." Elena sheepishly raises her hand. "If the world gets to see your suit in action and you become well known, can I borrow the suit for Halloween?"
"No." You laugh. "You are not dressing up as me for Halloween."
"But it's so pretty," she muses. "And that headpiece! God, I love that headpiece so much."
You shake your head at her, grinning, and then make your way back to the kitchen island. "Well now that everyone's done gawking, can I eat now? I'm starving."
For the duration of dinner, you let your family and friends spill a few secrets to keep Tony happy. Natasha keeps nudging you and gesturing to Enzo, but you shrug and blush when she wiggles her eyebrows.
"I have a feeling you have a thing for murderers," she quietly muses. "First Loki and now Enzo?"
You snort and shake your head, and then freeze when your eyes dart to her. She arches an eyebrow at you before smirking. You sigh in defeat. "Of course you know."
"As if we'd let an Avenger in training go back home without making sure everything was on the up and up. You're lucky Tony only kept the vampire secret between us three and didn't get Steve involved."
Your nose wrinkles. "He means well, but that man needs to realize not everything is sunshine and rainbows."
"Mhm. You don't have to tell me. I know perfectly well that we can coexist with vampires, but the second they start mindlessly murdering humans, then we're going to have an issue."
"Duly noted, Black Widow," Damon says aloud, letting her know he could hear her. "Though I am kind of interested to see how a vampire fares against someone such as yourself."
"Give me a few weeks and we'll test it out," she says.
Dinner conversation then turns into who they think can win a fight, and soon enough Jeremy has thrown all caution to the wind and is showing pictures from what he's dubbed as your teenage dirtbag days.
Soon enough Tony, Clint, and Natasha are leaving to hunker down in a bed and breakfast before they come back to pick you up tomorrow afternoon, and you're calling it an early night so you're not too exhausted the following morning.
As you walk into your room, you're not surprised to find Enzo already waiting in bed for you. Grinning, you crawl into bed until you're hovering above the dark haired vampire. "Hi," you muse, leaning down and quickly kissing him. "I'm surprised you're still here."
"Why wouldn't I be?"
You shrug and fall down atop the vampire, situating yourself until you're tucked into the crook of his arm with your head cushioned on his shoulder, your arm thrown over his chest, and your knee hiked up over his thigh. "Natasha usually scares people away or Tony intimidates them away."
"I don't know, love, the superheroes seemed to like us pretty well."
"You say that now, but wait until you show up in New York. You'll be their secret guinea pig that they test out their new gadgets on."
"As long as they don't cut me open, I have no issue with it."
"Ugh. They're gonna love you."
Enzo chuckles quietly. "I hope so. You're not getting away that easily."
"Can you guys stop being so cute? I'm not supposed to approve of whatever you guys have going on, but you're making it really hard to disapprove!"
You lift your head to shout at your door. "Shut up and go to sleep, Jenna!"
"Rude!"
Laughing, you let your head fall back on Enzo with a quiet groan. "They're all ridiculous. We're just having fun."
"Keep telling yourself that, love. Maybe one day down the line you'll actually believe it."
You pinch his side before turning your face to bite his pec. Enzo flinches and laughs some more. "You're not helping."
"Because you'll see it sooner or later that I'm the only one for you." He presses a kiss to your hairline and you sigh tiredly as you settle back down against him. "Now get some sleep." As you close your eyes and start to drift, you hear him ask, "Do you think I can compel your mission location out of that Hawkeye fella before you leave?"
"Don't you dare."

You sat in front of your vanity, outlining your lips with a deep shade of red, finishing off the look with a dab of gloss.
Damon didn't tell you any details of what he was planning, beyond having a weapon that could kill an Original, which would have seemed absurd if it wasn't your brother. You knew what he was capable of.
Damon had left not too long ago, telling you he was going to lunch with his girlfriend Andie, and would be back later.
All you knew was that there would be a dinner party tonight and if Elijah showed up, Damon was going to kill him.
Your phone rang and you glanced over to see Stefan's name on the screen, your pressed speaker, and went back to applying your lipstick.
"Hey," You said, pressing your lips together and checking the color.
"Hello," Stefan replied, sounding a bit tense.
"How's your trip with Elena going?" You asked, grabbing a tube of mascara.
"Well as it can be," he said vaguely.
"I guess you know about the deal then? Elena is willing to die for you, that's very sweet," you said casually, applying the mascara to your eyelashes.
"When did you get so callous? She isn't a martyr, she's just naive," he sighed.
You felt a pang of guilt for teasing him. He was right, Elena was kind and gentle, and both of your brothers loved her.
"Look, I'm sorry. I didn't mean it like that. I know how you feel about her," You said, trying to sound comforting. "It's just that she possesses an unfortunate face,"
Stefan let out a humorless chuckle, and sighed. "Katherine's face,"
"Yeahhhh," you laughed.
"Funny you should mention her, Elena has been reading some old journals written by Johnathan Gilbert," Stefan explained. "It's brought up a lot of memories,"
"Didn't you eat him?" You asked, screwing the cap onto the mascara.
His silence was an answer in and of itself.
"Are you afraid that if Elena learns about your lovely alter-ego she won't love you anymore?" You teased.
"This is serious," he sighed.
"Ok, ok, sorry," You said, standing up and smoothing out your dress. "Always so uptight,"
"Not everyone has it so easy, sister," he grumbled.
"What does that mean?" You asked, your tone slightly offended.
"It's nothing," he sighed.
"No, no. Please, speak your mind," You said, rolling your eyes.
"You've always just been good at it," He began, you could hear the annoyance in his voice.
"At what?" You snapped, pacing around your room.
"Being a vampire," He said bluntly. "You claim to loathe Katherine, yet you aren't that different,"
You didn't know what to say, his words cut you. How dare he compare you to the woman who destroyed your life, turned you and your brothers into monsters. Kept them under her toxic spell while you watched them suffer.
"That's not fair, Stefan," You said softly, feeling hurt and defensive.
"Isn't it?" He asked.
You stayed silent, unsure of what to say, you just stared out the window, the sun shining brightly outside.
"Anyway, I don't have time to debate your morals," Stefan continued. "I'm just calling to tell you to watch out for Damon, killing Elijah won't be easy, he will need your help,"
"And here I thought you didn't trust me," You said, unable to hide the hurt in your voice.
"I trust you more than anyone," he said softly.
You wanted to tell him everything, how guilty and ashamed you felt. You didn't even know why you were feeling these things, Elijah was nothing to you, but you couldn't stop thinking about him, the pain in his eyes, the coldness in his voice, it haunted you.
And now you were going to kill him, Stefan was right... You weren't so different from Katherine.
"Then, trust me when I say, I'll handle it," You said, keeping your tone casual.
"Ok," he said, though his voice sounded hesitant. "Please be careful,"
"I will," you said softly, before ending the call.
You sat down on your bed and pulled on a pair of black velvet pumps. They were tall, and made your legs look amazing. You checked your lipstick and smoothed out your dress, and headed downstairs.
Damon was just arriving home, with Andie in tow. They were carrying bags of groceries, and setting them down in the kitchen.
"Hi, Andie," You smiled.
"Hello darlin," she said, her voice cheery, like always. "Don't tell me that your brother roped you into this mess,"
"Mess?" You asked, raising an eyebrow, giving Damon a questioning look.
"Andie doesn't believe in my abilities to cook," Damon rolled his eyes.
"Damon has a tendency to go overboard with things," she laughed.
Neither of them were actually talking about the cooking. Damon had obviously told her about his plans for the night.
"What are we serving tonight, then?" You asked, giving him a warning look.
"A nice rack of lamb, roasted vegetables, some salad..." Damon trailed off, looking around the kitchen. "Annnd... A dessert that will be sure to knock our guest's socks off,"
You and Andie made eye contact and she smiled, trying not to laugh.
"Sounds lovely, brother," You smiled, reaching out and patting him on the shoulder. "How can I help?"
Damon gave Andie a pointed look and she nodded and left the kitchen, leaving the two of you alone to chat.
"So," he began, as he pulled out a box of matches and lit the burner on the stove. "Change of plans,"
"Change?" You asked, leaning against the counter, crossing your arms.
"I need you to stay upstairs, away from the party," He said, avoiding your eyes.
"What?!" You said, glaring at him. "Why?"
"Because Jenna is coming, and she thinks you are Elena's age... I can't have her asking too many questions," Damon explained.
"That's such bullshit!" You growled, pushing off the counter. "You can't do this on your own,"
"Yes I can," he scoffed.
"So, what? I'm just supposed to stay hidden away in my room, twiddling my thumbs while you try and kill Elijah?" You asked, getting more irritated by the second.
"Yeah, pretty much," He said, his tone casual. "And when it's done you can help me dispose of the body,"
"Are you being fucking serious?" You spat.
"Relax," he chuckled.
"How am I supposed to relax when I know you are going to get yourself killed?!" You asked, throwing your hands in the air.
Damon put down the pan he was holding and turned around, walking over to you and getting in your face, his eyes wild and bright.
"Despite you being a ravenous little killer, you are still my baby sister," he said, his voice soft, but his eyes were still angry. "I was wrong to ask you for help, it's my job to protect you, not put you in harm's way,"
You didn't like this one bit, Damon was stubborn and headstrong, and once his mind was made up, there was no changing it. It infuriated you, the way he saw you as this helpless damsel. Yet, you weren't surprised, he had a tendency to go overboard with things and forget logic. The fact that you were a vampire and could handle yourself was something he often forgot.
You felt humiliated and helpless, and that made you angry, so fucking angry.
"Fuck you," You snapped, turning on your heel, storming out of the kitchen, Damon called after you, but you ignored him, slamming the door to your room shut.
You stood in the middle of the room, feeling a wave of emotion hit you. This wasn't like you, you never let yourself feel like this, so out of control. The last time you felt anything like this was years ago, when you were human.
You hated that feeling, the way your stomach would twist, and your heart would ache. But it wasn't because of Damon... It was because of Elijah.

The sound of the guests arriving floated up to your bedroom. You were sitting on your bed, a glass of wine in hand. You had been drinking all evening, trying to numb the anger, the sadness, and the regret.
The plan was already in motion, there was no stopping it now. Elijah was going to die, and you were told to stay put and let it happen.
You picked up the voices of several familiar people, Alaric, Jenna, Andie, even Elena's estranged father John. All chatting happily, blissfully unaware of your presence upstairs.
You looked down into your glass, you could see your vague reflection in the dark liquid. You couldn't stand the sight of yourself, the guilt, the shame… it was eating away at you, no longer could you sit there and wallow in it.
Fuck it, you thought. You finished the glass off with one large gulp and got up, walking over to the full-length mirror.
Your hair was down, the curls flowing down past your breasts, and your makeup was perfect, smoky eyes and deep red lips. All dressed up and nowhere to go, nobody to see.
You headed down the hallway, trying to be as quiet as possible, peeking through the railing on the stairs to see if anyone was there.
Then you heard Elijah's voice, it was hushed and cold, and the words were unintelligible, but it was him, and your heart skipped a beat.
You inched closer, straining your ears, desperate to hear more.
"Can I just say that if you have less than honorable intentions about how this evening is going to proceed, I suggest you reconsider."
His tone was dark and threatening, and you knew Damon would be on the receiving end.
"No, nothing, nothing dishonorable. Just getting to know you," Damon replied, and you could picture his cocky smile.
"Hmm. Well, that's good," Elijah sounded skeptical, and you could hear him walking inside and closing the door.
"Because, you know, although Elena and I have this deal, if you so much as make a move to cross me, I'll kill you and I'll kill everyone in this house. Are we clear?" Elijah's tone was firm and unwavering, and you could sense the tension.
You took a deep breath, steadying your nerves, and walked down the stairs. Your feet a bit wobbly in your heels, the wine was catching up with you.
Everyone was looking at you by the time you got to the bottom, and you were sure your face was flushed, your cheeks pink. But all you could see was Elijah. His dark eyes watching you, and your heart was racing. Surely he wouldn't kill you in front of all these people.
"Well, well, well. Look who decided to join us," Damon chuckled nervously, walking up to you and putting his arm around your shoulder, squeezing you forcefully. "This isn't a party for teenagers, sweet sister,"
The tension was thick, and it was clear that Damon didn't want you there.
"I just wanted to come say hello, I was getting bored upstairs," You said casually, pulling away from him.
"Oh, c'mon Damon, it's alright. She can stay for the food," said Jenna, giving you a warm smile. She was so kind, you didn't want to see her get hurt.
"No, really. She should be going, right sis?" Damon said, glaring at you.
"No, I think I'm gonna stay, I was promised dinner, after all," You replied, meeting his eyes, defiance shining in them.
Elijah cleared his throat, stepping towards you and Damon, his face neutral. "Nice to meet you Miss Salvatore," he took your hand and kissed it, his lips lingering for a moment longer than necessary.
Damon was looking at Elijah like he wanted to rip his throat out, and you had to resist the urge to smirk.
"And you, Mr. Smith," You replied, trying to hide your amusement.
Elijah gave you a knowing look, and a small smile formed on his lips.
"Call me Elijah," He replied, still holding your hand.
"Elijah, then," You nodded, a shiver running down your spine as his thumb traced your wrist.
You had no idea why he was acting so casual, he had to know this was a trap, and he was just standing there, touching you.
"Ok, now that everyone knows each other, let's eat," Andie cut in, leading everyone to the dining room.
Before you could follow, Damon grabbed your arm and pulled you aside, his expression one of pure rage.
"What are you doing?" Damon growled.
"Having dinner," You said, pushing him off and brushing past him, walking into the dining room.
The only empty seat available was next to Elijah, who grew stiff when you approached him.
"Is this ok?" You asked, smiling sweetly.
He nodded, pulling the chair out for you, and pushing it back in once you were seated, always the gentleman.
Everyone was seated, and the dinner party was in full swing. Jenna and Andie asked Elijah all about the local history of Mystic Falls, and he bullshitted his way through, telling them stories of the old families that founded the town, local folklore tales, and other nonsense.
Elijah seemed to relax a bit, although he was purposely avoiding looking or speaking to you, his gaze focused elsewhere. But every once in a while you could feel his hand brush yours under the table, making your skin tingle.
You were drinking wine like it was water, and you could feel the effect it was having on you. The world was fuzzy, and everything was so funny. You would giggle or let out an inappropriate snort whenever Elijah would talk, and your face was flush and hot.
"Not to be a party pooper but aren't you a little young to be drinking?" John Gilbert said, looking at you, his eyes narrowing.
You glared at him, raising an eyebrow, he knew that you were a vampire, four times his age no less. But you weren't about to argue in front of sweet and innocent Jenna, who had no clue about the existence of the monsters she was surrounded by.
"She can have a glass, as her guardian I allow it," Damon said casually, not bothering to look up from his plate.
"Ahh, I see, I suppose the rules are a bit more lax when you have Damon as a parent," John added, his expression bitter and cold.
"I think she's had more than a glass," Andie said softly, her tone was concerned as she looked you over.
You felt Elijah's hand come to rest on your thigh under the table, it made your heart skip a beat and Damon look up from his plate.
"She's fine," Damon said, his tone final.
The other guests exchanged awkward glances, Alaric cleared his throat uncomfortably and Jenna and Andie both had worried expressions on their faces.
Elijah's hand was moving higher up your thigh, and it was making your face flush, and you were starting to get wet.
You had no idea why he was touching you, considering he wanted to kill you. But you supposed there is a fine line between lust and loathing.
As soon as everyone finished their meal, Andie got up and Damon gave her a pointed look, whatever he had planned had just begun.
"The gentlemen should take their drinks in the study," she said, giving everyone a smile, her gaze lingering on Elijah.
"I have to say the food was almost as wonderful as the company," Elijah said, smiling at her, and standing up.
"I like you," Andie said softly, returning his smile.
You watched as the men left, Damon looked back at you before he followed them, giving you a wink, and closing the door.
You were fuming, the wine making you angrier than usual, you went to follow but Andie intercepted you, handing you a pile of plates.
Sighing, you reluctantly carried them to the kitchen and started loading the dishwasher, not wanting to draw too much attention.
"Here, let me help," Jenna smiled, taking the glasses from your hands.
"It's fine," You said, forcing a smile.
"Come, drink some water, your face is flushed," Andie said, handing you a glass.
"No more for you," John added, pouring the leftover wine down the drain.
You scowled at all three of them, lecturing you like you were a child. They had no idea what you were capable of, the things you've done. They wouldn't treat you like this if they did.
You took the water, glaring at them, and chugged it, setting the glass down with a little more force than necessary.
Alaric came rushing into the kitchen with a wild look in his eye. He made eye contact with you, and he was out of breath.
"We forgot dessert!" He said, sounding panicked.
"What?" Andie asked, confused.
"Dessert!" Alaric repeated, his body practically vibrating with fear.
Whatever was going on, it definitely wasn't about dessert.
"I can make a chocolate mousse...?" Jenna began, trailing off, looking at Alaric with confusion.
"Perfect! Let's go tell Damon and Elijah," Alaric said in a rush, motioning to Andie who gave him a questioning look but followed him out.
"What is going on?" Jenna asked, turning to you, her eyes wide.
"No idea," You lied, shrugging, hoping to sound convincing.
As soon as Jenna had her back turned, you slipped out of the kitchen and headed for the dining room.
Everyone had already returned, and the tension was palpable. Alaric looked stressed and Damon was smirking, which was a sure sign of a disaster.
Damon and John were seated on opposite ends of the table, glaring at each other, while Elijah sat in center. Andie and Alaric were behind him, rummaging through her bag for some reason.
"What I'd like to know, Elijah, is how do you intend on killing Klaus?" John said sharply, looking over his wine glass at him.
It seemed that the dinner party discussions had finally turned to the real business at hand, you inched into the room quietly, trying not to draw any attention.
"Gentlemen, there's a few things we should probably get clear right now. I allow you to live solely to keep an eye on Elena. I allow Elena to remain in her house living her life with her friends as she does as a courtesy. If you become a liability, I'll take her away from you and you'll never see her again." Elijah's eyes flickered to you, but only for a second.
Before Damon or John had a chance to respond, Andie returned with her notebook in hand, sitting down across from Elijah, ready to interview him, "Okay. My first question is when you got here to Mystic..."
Suddenly, time seemed to slow down, you watched Alaric approach Elijah from behind, an ornate looking dagger in his hand, ready to stab him in the back.
You moved without thinking, lunging at Alaric, wrapping your hand around his wrist and snapping it with ease, causing the dagger to fall to the floor with a clatter.
Alaric crumbled to the floor in pain, looking up at you in shock.
The room suddenly exploded into action, dark veins spread beneath Elijah's eyes, and he lunged at Damon, knocking him over the table and onto the ground, grabbing him by the neck and lifting him into the air, his eyes ablaze.
John grabbed Andie, pulling her out of the way, while Alaric crawled along the floor, cradling his wrist.
You grabbed Elijah's arm, trying to pry him off of Damon.
"Don't! Let him go!" You shouted, struggling against him, his muscles were tensed, and his grip was tight, he wasn't budging.
Elijah looked over his shoulder at you, his dark eyes cold and angry. You gave him a pleading look, trying to convey how important it was that he listened.
"Please, he's my brother, please don't hurt him," You said, your voice breaking as your tears began to flow.
He dropped Damon, who fell to the floor with a thud, coughing and sputtering.
Elijah looked around the room at all the frightened faces, then to the floor where the dagger was lying and picked it up, examining it.
"Clever boy," Elijah looked at Alaric, shaking his head and tsking. "I haven't seen one of these in quite some time,"
He moved to attack Alaric but you jumped in front of him, shielding him with your body.
"Please don't kill him," You pleaded, putting your hands on his chest, trying to push him back.
He was immovable, but his gaze softened when his eyes met yours and he put the dagger in his jacket pocket. His eyes went back to Damon, who was still on the floor, glaring at him.
"Please, don't hurt anyone," You repeated, your hand moving to his hair, running your fingers through it.
He closed his eyes and leaned into your touch, his shoulders sagging, the tension leaving his body.
"Get away from my sister," Damon snarled, his voice rough from being choked.
Elijah looked at Damon, giving him a wicked smile and wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you close to him, your face pressed against his chest.
"Oh, she doesn't mind," Elijah smirked, looking at Damon with smug satisfaction.
Damon looked from you to Elijah, his expression a mixture of disbelief and pure rage. His brain couldn't quite compute what he was seeing.
"What did I say?" Elijah began, pausing to pretend he was pondering, "Oh yes! If you so much as make a move to cross me, I'll kill you and I'll kill everyone in this house,"
Your hands curled into his shirt, tugging on it, looking at him pleadingly. His dark eyes went to yours, and his gaze softened, he kissed you on the cheek, wiping away a stray tear.
"Fortunately for you, your lovely sister has been most gracious in her hospitality," He said, looking over your head at Damon.
You were visibly shaken up, looking at your brother with tear filled eyes, your hands trembling against Elijah's chest. He lifted your chin, forcing you to look at him instead of your devastated looking brother.
"So much for rule one," he said quietly, kissing the corner of your mouth.
Damon was seething, his fists clenched, and he was practically shaking with anger.
"Now, I hate to cut this evening short, but it seems I've overstayed my welcome," Elijah sighed, pulling away from you, his tone neutral.
"And as for you. Let me be perfectly clear, if you, or anyone else, attempt something like this again, I will kill you. No mercy. Understood?" Elijah asked, looking directly at Damon.
"Yes," Damon said, his voice dripping with venom.
"Wonderful. Now, I think it's time for me to take my leave," Elijah turned and began to walk out, "I'll be in touch," he called over his shoulder.
As soon as Elijah left, all eyes were on you. Damon's angry glare made you squirm, and the disgusted expressions from Andie, Alaric and John made you feel deep shame. You needed to get out of there.
But before you could , Damon grabbed you, the speed blowing your hair back. His hand went to your neck and he threw you against the wall, his fingers crushing your windpipe.
"Are you crazy? You’re fucking Elijah? ELIJAH?" He yelled right in your face, his rage so uncontrolled he lashed out and hit the wall beside your head, causing the plaster to crack and break.
"What the hell were you thinking?" He continued, his eyes wild, spit flying from his mouth.
"Damon," Andie said softly, stepping forward to calm him. John held her back, helping Alaric to his feet and pulling them both out of the room. John knew better than to get between Damon and his wrath.
"How did this happen? How did he get to you?" He shook you harder, causing the plaster dust to rain down. "Did he compel you? I told you to drink vervain every day!"
You kneed him in the stomach, forcing him to drop you, and you gasped for air.
"No! He didn't compel me, he would never," You snapped, rubbing your neck. "I...I care for him,"
Damon stared at you, his breathing ragged, and his expression completely blank. Then he started to laugh, it was devoid of any warmth, it was all bitterness and mockery.
"Care for him? What is he, your boyfriend? Did he ask you to go steady in-between planning Elena's murder?" Damon sneered.
"That's not fair," You said, scowling, folding your arms.
"So he's the reason you've been so distant? The reason you've been acting so weird? What, he's using you to get to Elena, isn't he?" Damon was pacing back and forth, his hands in his hair.
"No... We never discus-" You tried to explain.
"This is unbelievable," He groaned, cutting you off, and walking over to the liquor cart, pouring himself a drink, then he froze.
"Please tell me you didn't fuck him in this house," he said, his voice dangerously low.
"Not exactly...," You trailed off, averting your gaze, biting your lip.
Damon downed his drink and smashed the glass against the wall, "Fuck, Y/N, do you have any idea what you've done?"
"I had a plan! Everything just spiraled out of control," You said, your voice shaking, feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. "I tried... I tried to steal the moonstone, for you! For us! He caught me and... and I was stupid. I'm sorry.”
"So you thought you could pull a honeypot on an original?" Damon looked completely dumbfounded, and a little impressed. "Are you insane? Or just dumb?"
His words cut you deeply, mostly because they were the same things you had said to yourself, a million times.
"I thought it would work," You shrugged, your arms dropping, you were feeling defeated.
"And I suppose letting him fuck you was an added bonus, huh?" Damon shot back.
"Yes!" You screamed, frustrated, throwing your hands up. "I like him, Damon! He's interesting and attractive and he treats me like an equal!"
Damon snorted, "Because he thinks you're a slut."
That stung, he had never called you that before and tears sprang to your eyes. You glared at him, as they began to spill down your cheeks. You were done arguing with him, and you were done listening to him. He didn't understand, and you had nothing more to say.
Without another word, you pulled the dagger out of your bra, you had managed to remove it from Elijah's pocket without anyone noticing. You threw it at the floor at Damon's feet and stormed off.
Damon looked at the dagger, his brow furrowed, then back up at the spot you had just occupied, a sinking feeling in his stomach. He had made you cry.
You ran to your room and crawled under the covers, letting all your pent up emotions flow out of you, coming out in gasps and hiccups. You had no idea what to do, you didn't want to choose between your family and Elijah. You didn't want to be forced to pick a side.
You didn't want to have to give up what you felt when you were around him.
You didn't know how.
Tumblr media
It had been a few hours since the disastrous dinner party. You were still laying in your bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying the events over and over again in your mind.
You heard Damon leave not long after your argument. You had no idea where he ran off too. Knowing him, he went to find more trouble. Part of you regretted the fight, the other part of you wanted to strangle him.
You were exhausted, physically and emotionally. It was like every single part of your being was weighed down.
Just then you heard a loud commotion downstairs, the voices of your brothers and Elena floated up to you. There was a strange scraping sound, like they were dragging something heavy across the floor.
You quickly got up to investigate, hopping down the stairs, stopping suddenly in front of a very nervous looking Elena.
"What happened?" You asked, trying to look past her to your brothers.
"Damon told me what happened," She said softly, reaching out to touch you. But you spotted a pair of legs being dragged away towards the stairs leading to the basement.
Your eyes went wide as you figured out whose legs they were. Panic swept over you, and you pushed past Elena and rushed to the basement after them.
Stefan and Damon were throwing Elijah's body into the cell, he looked gray and cold, the dagger sticking out of his chest.
"Elijah! No, no, no," You cried, screaming and trying to get past your brothers. But they were too strong for you, holding you back, and quickly closing the gates.
"Let me go!" You punched at Damon's chest, desperate to get inside the cell, tears streaming down your face.
Damon just held you, refusing to release you, your screams filling the small basement.
Stefan locked the door, following you and Damon upstairs. You were kicking and fighting like a crazy woman, begging them to let you see him.
Once you made it upstairs, Stefan grabbed you and held you in his arms, still you fought and cried for him, despite his pleas for you to stop.
"Please calm down," Stefan begged, holding onto you tightly.
"He came to take Elena, we had no choice," Damon said, his voice sounding tired, like this had been an exhausting evening for him.
"He promised me he wouldn't," You said, your voice cracking, your throat raw.
"He lied, Y/N, that's what he does," Damon replied, sounding exasperated.
"Shut up!" You screamed, jerking out of Stefan's arms and rushing at Damon, your fist connecting with the side of his face. "You did this! He wouldn't have done anything if you hadn't provoked him!"
You managed to hit him twice, splitting his lip, before Stefan grabbed you again, pulling you back.
"Knock it off!" Stefan said sharply, giving you a firm shake. You stopped struggling for a moment, panting.
Elena came and stood next to Damon, looking more sad than angry. She wasn't sure what to say, or what to do in this situation.
"I love him Stefan, please," you begged, sniffling. It was the first time you could admit it out loud, to anyone, to yourself and you wished it was Elijah you could have told first. "You have to let me see him, even if he's dead...I just have to see him."
Your words cut through Stefan's heart. Trembling in his arms, he had never seen you so distraught and in pain. He looked over your head at Damon and Elena, silently asking for permission.
"Fine, I'll take you, but only because you'll probably burn the house down if I don't," Damon said, rolling his eyes.
Stefan let you go and you immediately ran down the stairs, your feet skidding slightly on the concrete floor. You rushed into the cell and fell to your knees beside Elijah's body.
"lijah," you said softly, trying to coax him out of sleep.
He was gray, covered in dark veins, his skin felt cold. Your fingers trembled as you touched his face, your fingers running through his hair.
You laid down next to him, resting your head against his chest, listening to the lack of heartbeat. You lay there for a few minutes, crying to yourself.
You could feel Damon watching you, and it pissed you off.
"Please leave me alone," You said softly, your voice breaking, not bothering to turn and look at him.
Damon was standing there, leaning against the wall, his arms folded, and he looked at you thoughtfully.
"He's dangerous, and he's using you," Damon replied.
"He never learned anything from me!" You snapped, glaring at him, the anger boiling over. "We had an agreement, an understanding! It wasn't like that!"
Damon shook his head, and looked away from you.
"You can't be in love with him. You barely know him." Damon was trying his hardest to get you to see sense.
"Maybe, maybe I'm not," You lied, sniffling, "I just feel like there's something there, something real and I've never felt this way before,"
Damon let out an exasperated sigh, and closed his eyes.
"This will end badly, I'm not going to try and convince you anymore. You're too damn stubborn," He said, opening his eyes and looking down at you.
"Can you bring me a blanket and pillow?" You asked, changing the subject.
"No," Damon said, turning on his heel and leaving the basement.
"Asshole," You muttered, moving back to rest your head against his chest.
A few minutes later, Stefan came down the stairs, carrying a blanket and a pillow, and a bottle of bourbon.
"Thanks," You smiled weakly, taking the blanket and covering yourself with it. You took the pillow and gently lifted Elijah's head, placing the pillow underneath him.
"Is he really dead?" You asked quietly, not looking at Stefan, staring at Elijah's face.
Stefan let out a long sigh, he hated seeing you like this, the sight of you curled up next to a corpse was not a normal one.
I'm not entirely sure," he knelt down, crossing his legs and he sat on the floor next to you. "but he isn't alive either, he's frozen, asleep,"
He reached out and touched your shoulder, turning you to look at him.
"Damon wants to keep him on ice, he doesn't trust Elijah and... neither do I," he tried to say it gently, wanting you to know the truth. "if you wake him up, he will kill us for what we've done... Elena tricked him... He will not be happy,"
"Maybe he will forgive us," you said, looking at him with hopeful eyes, "what if he can feel everything? He must be so scared and lonely,"
"Do you really think he can feel fear?" Stefan asked, raising an eyebrow. "My impression of him is that he isn't the type,"
"He has a big heart, under all that arrogance," you smiled softly, touching his face, brushing the hair from his forehead. "Kinda like someone we know,"
"You've got it bad," Stefan shook his head, a little bit in awe of your feelings. "I've never seen you like this, not with any other guy."
You looked over at him, his expression was a mix of worry and sadness.
"Do you hate me? For loving him?" You asked, a knot forming in your stomach.
"No, never," he said, pulling you into his arms. "I'm worried, and scared... But I could never hate you. Ever."
"I can convince him Stefan, I can get him on our side, I know I can," you said, feeling the tears come back.
"And if you can't?" He asked, rubbing your back.
"Then... Then... I don't know..." You said, a sob choking you, unable to speak.
Stefan hated himself for what he had to do next, but it was the only way he could think to keep everyone safe.
While you were still in his arms, he pulled out a syringe and jabbed it in your neck, pushing the liquid vervain in. It was a large dose and it took about three seconds before you passed out.
He caught you before you slumped to the ground, lifting your sleeping body and carrying you upstairs.
Damon and Elena were waiting anxiously, eager to hear that Stefan had been able to talk you down from freeing Elijah.
"Is she ok?" Elena moved forward, "Did she try anything?"
"She had a bit of a melt down," Stefan said honestly, he placed you on the couch, ensuring you were tucked in and comfortable.
"What can we do to make sure she doesn't help him?" Damon asked, leaning on the doorway, unable to come closer to you. The sight of you like this broke his heart. "she's been completely brainwashed by the guy,"
"She loves him Damon," Elena said softly, walking over to him, laying her hand on his arm.
"Don't say that," he groaned, covering his face. "That makes it worse. She has to get over it."
"I don't think it works that way," Elena said gently, squeezing his arm.
"We have to keep her away from him," Damon explained, his hands dropping, he was looking at Elena now. "It's too risky."
"That will be impossible," Stefan said, shaking his head, "she's more stubborn than you, she won't give up until she has her way."
"So what do we do?" Elena asked, glancing between them.
"The only way I can think of is to keep her sedated, until I find a way to kill him for good," Damon said, his tone matter-of-fact.
"No, Damon.. that's not right," Elena protested, looking to Stefan to back her up.
Stefan couldn't meet her gaze, instead he turned away, "We don't have any other options."
"So we are just going to knock her out? That's cruel!" Elena said, feeling very disappointed.
"Got any better ideas?" Damon snapped, kneeling down in front of you. He placed his hand on your forehead, "I can't let her wake him up, he will kill us all,"
Elena sighed, shaking her head.
"She will hate us for doing this," Stefan said, not liking the idea one bit, but it was the best they had.
"Yeah, well, I can handle that," Damon shrugged, and picked you up in his arms.
He carried you to your room, gently placing you on the bed, pulling the covers up over your body. He sat next to you, tucking your hair behind your ears.
"You'll understand, eventually," He said softly, stroking your hair, before standing up and leaving the room, shutting the door quietly.

You were trapped in some sort of nightmare, everything around you was completely dark. You couldn't even see your hand in front of your face. You had no idea where you were, what was up or what was down.
You were calling out for help, your voice echoing back to you, but no one else was there.
Suddenly, you felt a presence beside you, it was warm, familiar and safe. You were drawn to it and you reached out, trying to find the source of it.
You heard the sound of a man laughing, it was a wild, maniacal laugh.
You started running, your feet hitting the ground hard, you couldn't breathe, but you didn't stop. The laughter kept coming, getting louder and louder.
Then the sound of a woman screaming nearly knocked you off your feet, but you kept going until you ran into something solid.
It was the edge of a coffin, made of wood etched with an ornate symbol on the top, a crest of some sort. Your fingers traced over it, feeling the deep grooves. It was the letter 'M', carved into a shield.
Finally, your hands found the lid, and you pushed, straining to open it. What was inside was three rings of fire, you could feel the heat on your face, the smoke making it hard to breathe.
The rings were getting closer, or you were falling into them, you couldn't tell. The screams became deafening. You were overwhelmed with intense anxiety, unable to move as you stared into the flames.
Then everything stopped.
And you woke up.
