Will you be my Valentine?- Charlie Gillespie

A/n- Happy Late Valentine’s Day everyone. I hope you all had an amazing Valentines day. I decided to write this imagine about Charlie asking the reader to be his Valentine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your POV
I was in my room listening to some y/f/s while painting my nails red, when I heard my phone ring. I carefully pushed the answer button and put the phone on speaker.
“ Hello” I said
“ Hey girl, what’s up.” I heard Madison say
I let out a little giggle before answering “ I’m not doing much really just painting my nails, what's up with you Mads.”
She then started to explain to me about her new game she just started playing. While I was listening to her talk I continued painting my nails.
“ Alright Y/n/n, has anyone asked you to be their valentine yet.” She asked me
I sighed while cleaning up after my nails dried.
“ I’m going to take that as a no. I thought Charlie would have asked you?”
I made a confused face and said...
“ Why would Charlie ask me?”
Her line went really quiet, so I grew a little concerned.
“ Mads? Are you okay?”
“ Yeah, sorry.”
“ So about that questioned I asked you Mads.”
She sighed “ Y/n/n?”
“ Yes?” I asked confused
“ I, uh got to go. bye!” She shouted
I sighed in disappointment because I was hoping she would tell me if he was planning on asking me if he was planning on asking me. I got out of my bed and headed out to my kitchen. Once I got to my kitchen I went over to my pantry to grab a quick snack. After I got my snack I headed into the living room and started watching a random show.
‘Time Skip’
I ended up waking up to hearing knocking on my door. I got up and slowly made it over to the door and found Owen on the other side. He gave me a huge smile.
“ Good evening sleeping beauty.” He said
I rolled my eyes at him, but I let him in.
“ What do you want Mr. Joyner.”
I heard him let out a small chuckle from behind me.
“ Well if you must know, I need you to get all fancy and follow me.”
I turned around to face him and opened my mouth, but Owen beat me to it.
“ No, questions. I was told to tell you and there will no further questions.”
I sighed and walked to my room to find a perfect dress to wear.
Owen’s POV
I was waiting for Y/n to hurry up getting ready so I could drive us to the second place Charlie wanted us to go to. I was in the middle of responding to a text from Jeremy when I heard something coming from Y/n’s room. I carefully walked over to her room and knocked on the door.
“ Come in” She said
I opened the door slowly. Once I walked in my jaw dropped.
“ It looked like a tornado came through your room.” I said
I felt her glaring at me “ Sorry, but any way, what seems to be the problem.”
She let out a groan and gave me a small pout. “I can’t find anything to wear!” She whined
I let out a chuckle “ Honey, sit down, let me look.”
She sighed, but did as I told her. I went over the options that she had and picked out a maroon long sleeve dress and paired it with some black heels.
“ Here change and I would curl your hair. Also do light/dark natural make up, but a dark red lipstick.”
She smiled at me and took her outfit out of my hand to change, but gave me a quick hug first.
“ Go hurry!” I chuckled while giving her a small push
‘Time Jump’
Y/n and I finally got to our next destination. I secretly texted Jeremy that we were here so he could get ready. I walked up to his apartment with Y/n behind me. I knocked on the door and heard footsteps coming up to it so I gently grabbed Y/n’s wrist and pulled her closer to the door.
“ Hey guys” Jeremy said
Your POV
I gave Jeremy a small smile before he opened his mouth again.
“ Okay, so Y/n/n I was told to give you these y/f/f and this note. You can read the note in the car because we need to make one last stop before your big surprise.”
I nodded and grabbed the flowers and note out of his hands. All three of us made our way back to Owen’s car. Once we were back on the road again I opened up my note that Jeremy gave me.
‘Dear my dearest angel,
I have the best surprise for you, but right now I hope you love your flowers. I can’t wait to see you gorgeous, you are probably blushing right now. Any way see you real soon.’
Love,
Charlie
I could still feel myself blushing and I looked up to find Jeremy recording me. I quickly covered my face and let out a groan of annoyance
“ Jeremy stop recording me!” I whined
I could hear Owen and Jeremy laughing up front, so I let out another groan which only made them laugh more.
‘Time Jump’
Both of the boys got out of the car and Owen opened the back door for me to climb out. I saw that we were at another apartment building.
“ Guys who we getting now?” I asked confused
Jeremy turned around “ Where getting Mads.”
I smiled and nodded.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After the long elevator ride we made it to the door. Owen knocked on the door and we heard a squeal of excitement.
“ Madison!” I shouted
She hugged me in excitement. I could hear the boys chuckling at our actions. We pulled away and she said...
“ I have something for you!”
I giggled and held my hands out for her to put it in my hand. She put it in my hand and when I looked down it was a heart shaped chocolate box.
“ Thank you Mads.”
She giggled “ You’re welcome, but it was from your secret admirer.”
I smiled and Owen shouted...
“ LAST STOP!”
Before we left Mads said bye to her dad. Once we got back to the car Owen drove us all to our last stop.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was chilling on my phone when I felt the car stop. I looked up to find that we were at a beautiful park. I heard Madison squeal so I looked over at her.
“ You okay there?” I asked
She looked at me and said..
“ Sorry just really excited to see your reaction.”
I let out a small giggle. I was getting out of the car when I heard Madison yell out.
“ Boys record this moment please.”
I then saw both of them grab their phones out of their pockets since Mads already had hers out.
“ Okay were do I need to go.” I questioned
They all pointed to a path with roses petals and some candles. I smiled and started making my way to the path. When I got closer I saw some other cast members each holding my favorite flower. I got to Savannah first and we smiled at each other. I went through that with Booboo, Sacha, Jadah, and Tori. I felt my eyes well up with tears seeing Kenny at the very last pit stop of the path.
“ You have someone very special.” He said
He then gave me a small hug before I got to the special person.
Charlie’s POV
I was standing in my nice tux nervously waiting for Y/n/n and everyone else. I looked up when I heard footsteps getting closer. I then saw her and smiled. She was finally standing a couple inches in front of me, I could see tears in her eyes.
“ Y/n/n will you be my special Valentine this year?” I asked
She let a tear fall and nodded her head. I grabbed her and gave her a long meaningful kiss. I could hear everyone cheering. I pulled away from the kiss and smiled at her. I then pulled her into a huge hug. I saw everyone either crying or trying their best not to cry. I felt something wet on my shirt.
“ Hey don’t cry beautiful.” I whispered
I heard her slowly calming down, so I pulled her away from me a little.
“ Sorry for messing up your shirt.”
I looked down to see drops of her make up mixed with her tears. I then grabbed her hand and kissed the back of it.
“ Don’t worry about it. Let’s just go back to mine and Owen’s apartment to cuddle.”
She smiled and nodded. Everyone then helped me pick things up so we could head back to our places.
Your POV
While heading back to the parking lot I grabbed Charlie and pecked his lips.
“ What was that for?” he questioned
I shrugged “ I just love you so much.”
He smiled and pecked my lips. “ I love you too.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry for the late Valentine post, but hopefully is super cute. I kind of got flustered a little while writing some of it. Feel free to comment, or request.

i was just looking at your wips and was wondering if you do them in that order or do you do whichever you feel like doing first
Heya!
Thanks for asking!
Honestly, my posting system is chaos. Jeremy Beremy if you will.
This is more than you asked for but here is an insight 😀
I have lots of WIPs on the go at any one time, and usually I will dot around between a few projects, not knowing which I might manage to finish first, but chipping away. Sometimes, I will choose one WIP I really want to finish “next” and focus on it solely for a while. However, sometimes inspiration jumps out of nowhere, for something that was not on my radar until literally two seconds ago but now I am consumed until I finish all 21k of it, and nobody has any idea it is coming until it arrives fully formed on the dash, least of all me 😆.
I also have a ton of other WIPs in my drafts which aren’t on the list.
Sometimes things drop off of my radar for months at a time, but I still consider it an “active” WIP, because I do intend to finish it one day and it’s definitely not “abandoned”.
Sometimes I totally forget I had a half-written thing in the drafts and might rediscover it and finish it at an unexpected moment.
Somethings, I’m purposefully putting off starting until other specific things are finished, to make myself finish the other things.
Sometimes with asks/requests I’m able to answer it quickly, as my brain is in the right space to do it right away, but other times I also add those as a WIP in my drafts and it might stay there until things fall together.
I also sometimes write quick blurbs or even longer pieces in between working on the longer projects to take a break, and sometimes I never really think of those as WIPs as they just happen.
In summary, it’s really hard to predict with any accuracy what on Earth I will finish second next, most of the time. BUT, I can often say what I will finish next, if I’m working (or especially if hyperfocussing) on a specific thing (which happens a lot).
For example, this month, I am/was really keen to finish one of my TF fics, but, all my plans were completely disrupted by me falling into a pit of Moon Knight hyperfixation, so all other WIPs were paused by default until I rode that wave. (This is for fun after all, so sometimes I have to go where my brain wants to play!)
I have the list of WIPs there and genuinely hope it’s helpful as a guide, so people know roughly what type of thing is coming up for which type of characters. But, there are also often surprises!
One thing I can’t really do is put time very good time estimates on things, though there are odd exceptions.
So, unfortunately no, to answer your actual question, it’s not in order at all, because inspiration is such a fickle and meandering creature, and plot bunnies bounce around everywhere with no hope of me controlling them because they’re bunnies 🐰🥺
(And slight tangent but this is why I always emphasise I accept requests, and can always be encouraged to bump certain things up the list, but you might literally be waiting between one day and seven years for something from me, as I’m at the whim of my own brain, and in my brain time is not a linear concept! But, you should know, if I said I’m going to do something, I’ll still be still sitting there thinking “yes, that’s something I’m working on”, even if I’m still figuring out pieces in my head or waiting for that elusive inspiration to hit right. Sometimes, a 1k thing might take months and a 21k thing might happen out of nowhere, and other times it’s the opposite way around, so there’s little rhyme or reason!)
This answer was far too long, I’m sorry.
I guess what I’m trying to say is it’s chaos, pure chaos, but what I can guarantee is that I’m always writing something, and I that I will do the things. In the wrong order. Eventually. 😝 Probably… 🙈😂

Since I’m at 480 now, it’s time to post the next collab. This one was done with @rachthecool for one of our favourite fandoms (I actually requested a fic from her that she knocked out of the park). This is based on a scenario she came up with a while back. Anyway, have some Be More Chill!
Warnings: puke, fever, fluff
Sleepovers weren’t uncommon. Jeremy and Michael loved hanging out and playing video games til midnight, playing dorky nerd games and occasionally truth or dare. On weekends, they’d often try to pull all-nighters. They’d normally alternate which house they’d hang out in, and this time it was Michael's… which meant Jeremy was sprawled out on the couch trying desperately to get a moment’s rest while Michael was sleeping comfortably in his room. Why? Because Michael was ‘too gay to be sleeping in a bed with another guy’. Michael had jokingly warned that he might not be able to help himself.
Jeremy had felt ‘off’ all day, as he had dismissed it as. He only realized right when they started up their video game how his head was pounding with a dull and agonizing pain, his throat was burning with the need to cough, and his head was spinning dizzily. He tried to hide this while they played, ignoring the way the brightness of the screen made his stomach churn uncomfortably. He hated cancelling on Michael, especially since he had been so excited to try out a new game.
So here he was, lying weakly on the couch as he shivered violently under the thin blanket Michael had equipped him with.
If he had been asleep, Jeremy would have startled himself awake. His stomach twisted violently, anticipating vomiting. He forced it down. The last thing he needed was to be sick at Michael’s house again. The couch wasn’t as comfortable as Jeremy remembered.. The tv was still on. In the partial light, Jeremy could barely see his hand shaking violently two feet in front of him. He shivered anew, his whole body trembling with cold tremors. Reaching for another blanket, he suddenly stopped and was forced to suck in a shaky breath. Moving jostled him in an unexpected way. His throat felt cold, and his mouth was filling with saliva. His whole body was shaking.
A voice in his head. Was that real? Probably. The squip would never really go away. Jeremy started. His stomach felt cold. His whole body felt cold. Jeremy smothered a whimper in his hands. His teeth chattered.
Bathroom, he decided he needed, but he sure as hell knew he wasn’t going to make it in time. He got up anyway, shuddering violently as the sudden movement only increased the nausea to the point where he couldn’t make it another step. Fuck. He tried to move again.
His throat contracted. He did his best to force it down, swallowing against each gag. Jeremy could no longer move. He was rooted in place, trying desperately to cover his mouth with his hand, smothering the need to retch. It didn’t work. A final heave drove the contents of his stomach up his throat. He opened his mouth, powerless against himself. The sour liquid exploded into the back of his mouth. He puked all over his goddamn feet.
This wasn’t the problem, however. The problem was that he puked on Michael’s goddamn floor. All over his floor, in a sickening puddle right in front of him. He stood, petrified, staring at it in fear and self-hatred. The light of the tv weakly illuminated the room so that he had to stare at the disgusting mess he had created, which made him even more guilty. The worst part was that he wasn’t done.
He wasn’t entirely sure of what happened next, as he felt oddly disoriented and was sure he was half-delirious, but he could feel and hear the liquid splattering down onto his feet, and of course the floor again. Tears burned at his eyes, and bile burned at his throat. He was barely pulled out of his fevered state, only enough so he could stare at how weak and stupid he was being, ruining Michael’s house while they were supposed to be hanging out and having a good time.
Jeremy heaved. Panic gripped his thoughts. He couldn’t puke anymore. He couldn’t wake anyone up either. Jeremy’s legs were almost too shaky to hold himself up. The adrenaline was the only thing that kept him standing. He could hardly swallow all the saliva that was filling his mouth. He tried his best not to start crying. His stomach felt like it was doing somersaults, trying not to heave into his hand. Jeremy wanted to slump over and close his eyes.. If he convinced himself he wouldn’t puke anymore, he wouldn’t puke anymore.
Tears fell down his cheeks faster.
Those thoughts were pushed from his head by the urge to gag once again. Choking on a sob, he gave in to the nausea, and another small spurt of puke came from his mouth. Turning on a light would wake someone up. He couldn’t do that.
Jeremy’s thoughts raced, frantic to find a solution. The slick vomit was reflecting the light of the tv, and it made him sick as he moved, feeling it squish between his toes. The bathroom had things he could use, he was sure of it. He stepped gingerly to the light switch, trying not to rub the puke on his feet further into the grey carpet.
He turned on the light. It felt like a knife, driving into his temples. He grabbed onto his head, crying out. This felt like the squip.
The light grey carpet seemed to hurt his feet as he padded against it, desperate to get to the bathroom. He spat into the sink, leaning down to rinse out his mouth. His stomach felt marginally better after heaving up the contents onto the floor. His head didn’t. It pounded with new fervor, matching the racing rhythm of his heart.
He grabbed as many cleaning supplies as he could, briefly pausing to wipe off his feet. He didn’t bother checking any of the labels. Grab it all and see what there is. He carried it to the puke stain. In the light, he could see every bit of it. The orange vomit was littered with scraps of pizza. It made him sick to have to clean it up. The smell hit him next, and he crumpled to his knees.
Sobs wracked his body while he desperately scrubbed the carpet. Nothing was coming out. He ruined Michael’s house. He deliriously convinced himself that Michael would hate him for this, and that he’d never be able to come over ever again if Michael found out. He felt absolutely awful, not just physically, but with the added guilt that he had just puked everywhere and probably ruined Michael’s carpet.
“Jeremy?” Came a tired voice behind him. He knew that voice. He couldn’t not know it. He sobbed harder and turned around. “What happened?”
Michael was standing behind him, in an old Galaga t-shirt and boxers. His glasses were shoved on his face, but his eyes were squinted against the harsh light. His face painted a picture of concern.
Jeremy could do nothing but sob. He used the backs of his messy hands to wipe his face. He was screwed. Michael would probably hate him now, and he would probably stop being his friend because he was being so stupid and weak. The thought of this only made the tears multiply as they streamed uncontrollably down his face.
Michael made a noise of surprise. “Jeremy you’re covered in puke! What happened?”
“Don’t feel so good, Micah,” Jeremy rasped, and Michael looked down at the mess he had made.
He had expected Michael to start yelling at him. He had expected Michael to give him a look of disgust and throw him out of the house, or at the very least scold him, but he soon felt himself being scooped up into warm and comforting arms.
“Shh, don’t cry, Jeremy. It’s okay…” Michael looked down to the cleaning supplies, then back to Jeremy’s wide-eyed expression of pure shock. “You weren’t trying to clean it, were you?”
Jeremy nodded, trying to bury his face into Michael’s chest so he’d never have to look him in the eyes again.
Michael wrapped him up tighter, taking care not to squeeze his middle too hard lest he start something again.
“You could have woken me up, Jer,” Michael whispered to him. “I wouldn’t have been mad.”
Jeremy’s brain told him that was wrong. That Michael would have been mad, that he would have thrown him out of the house, never spoken to him again. When Jeremy tried to nod again, Michael stilled him.
“I wouldn’t have been mad then, and I’m not mad now. Shit like this happens. Do you feel any better at least?”
Jeremy considered it. The nausea had ebbed slightly, leaving him with a hollow feeling in the pit of his stomach and a burning sensation all the way up to the back of his throat. But there was no longer any impending risk of vomit, so he agreed.
Michael brushed a hand to Jeremy’s cheek, tsking once again at the immense heat. “God, you’re burning up… I can’t believe you tried to clean this with a fever like that…”
Jeremy looked down guiltily, to which Michael lifted his chin up to look him in the eyes. “I’m not expecting you to clean anything. You could’ve woken me up and I could’ve cleaned it for you, and you could’ve gotten some proper rest… It’s actually not too late for that. Do you want to go lie down in my bed?”
Jeremy sniffed shakily and nodded, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand. Michael smiled at him, gently returning the nod, and he started pulling him towards the stairs. Jeremy leaned into him, trying his best to move quickly for Michael.
Michael encouraged him the whole way, with small “You’re okay”s, and “careful”s. The second set of stairs was harder. Michael had to pick him up a bit, lifting him up the last few steps.
“Oh, Jerm. Just a few more steps.” Michael’s bed was colder than Jeremy expected. It was soothing against his itching, burning skin. He rolled over, shoving his flaming cheeks into one of Michael’s pillows.
“Okay,” Michael stood by the edge of his bed. “I’m just going to clean up downstairs, I’ll be right back, okay?”
Michael pressed a gentle kiss to Jeremy’s head and left the room.
Jeremy rolled over again, trying to make himself comfortable in a bed that was far too big and far too empty. Michael’s bed smelled like him, and Jeremy relished in it. He pulled a pillow to his chest, burying his nose in it. Michael couldn’t come back fast enough.
Jeremy was half asleep by the time Michael came back in, smelling like cleaning products. He felt the covers get pulled back behind him, and the bed dip as Michael got in, pushing himself towards his Jeremy.
“Are you asleep?” Michael whispered.
Jeremy groaned. Pulling Jeremy into his chest, Michael chuckled. “Goodnight.”

‘Cruel’ Digital Race For Vaccines Leaves Many Seniors Behind
With millions of older Americans eligible for covid-19 vaccines and limited supplies, many continue to describe a frantic and frustrating search to secure a shot, beset by uncertainty and difficulty.

This story also ran on NPR. It can be republished for free.
The efforts to vaccinate people 65 and older have strained under the enormous demand that has overwhelmed cumbersome, inconsistent scheduling systems.
The struggle represents a shift from the first wave of vaccinations — health care workers in health care settings — which went comparatively smoothly. Now, in most places, elderly people are pitted against one another, competing on an unstable technological playing field for limited shots.
“You can’t have the vaccine distribution be a race between elderly people typing and younger people typing,” said Jeremy Novich, a clinical psychologist in New York City who has begun a group to help people navigate the technology to get appointments. “That’s not a race. That’s just cruel.”
While the demand is an encouraging sign of public trust in the vaccines, the challenges facing seniors also speak to the country’s fragmented approach, which has left many confused and enlisting family members to hunt down appointments.
“It’s just maddening,” said Bill Walsh, with AARP. “It should be a smooth pathway from signing up to getting the vaccine, and that’s just not what we’re seeing so far.”
Glitchy websites, jammed phone lines and long lines outside clinics have become commonplace as states expand who’s eligible — sometimes triggering a mad dash for shots that can sound more like trying to score a ticket for a music festival than obtaining a lifesaving vaccine.
After being inundated, some public health departments are trying to hire more staff members to handle their vaccination hotlines and specifically target seniors who may not be able to navigate a complicated online sign-up process.
“Just posting a website and urging people to go there is not a recipe for success,” said Walsh.
‘Terribly Competitive’
Like many other seniors, Colleen Brooks, 85, had trouble sorting through the myriad online resources about how to find the vaccine where she lives, on Vashon Island in the Puget Sound near Seattle.
“It was an overwhelming amount of information,” she said. “I knew it was here someplace, but it wasn’t easy to find out how to get it.”
After making calls, Brooks eventually got a tip from a friend who had spotted the vaccines being unloaded at their town pharmacy. When she dropped by her health clinic to inquire about how to sign up, it happened they were giving out shots that same day.
“That was totally serendipitous for me, but I actually personally know several seniors who just kind of gave up,” said Brooks.
Finding out how to get a vaccine appointment was more straightforward for Gerald Kahn, 76, who lives in Madison, Connecticut.
Kahn got an email notice from the state’s vaccine registration system telling him to make an appointment, but he ran into problems at the very end of the sign-up process.
“As much as I would pound my finger on the face of my iPad, it didn’t do me any good,” he said.
So Kahn did what many have and called a younger family member, who was able to help him finish signing up.
“I think there are a lot of people my age, maybe the preponderance, who can only go so far into the internet, and then we’re not only stymied but also frustrated,” he said.
When Helen Francke, 92, logged on for a vaccine at the designated time, she discovered the spots available in Washington, D.C., filled up almost instantaneously.
“It was evident that I was much too slow,” she said. “It’s terribly competitive and clearly favors those with advanced computer skills.”
The next week, Francke tried calling and going online — this time with the help of her neighbors — without success.
“If I had had to depend on the D.C. vaccination website and telephone, I’d still be anxious and unsuccessful,” said Francke, who got a shot only after finding information on a neighborhood discussion group that directed her to a hospital.
In Arizona, Karen Davis, 80, ended up on a roundabout quest through state and hospital websites with no clear sense of how to actually book an appointment.
“I kept trying to do it and kind of banged my head against the wall too many times,” she said.
Davis, a retired nurse, called her doctor and the pharmacy and then eventually turned to a younger relative, who managed to book a 5 a.m. appointment at a mass vaccination site.
“I’m sure they did not expect older people to be able to do this,” she said.
Miguel Lerma, who lives in Phoenix, said his 69-year-old mother has been unsuccessful in finding a shot.
“She’s not an English speaker and doesn’t know technology well, and that’s how everything is being done,” said Lerma, 31.
Lerma said it’s especially painful to watch his mother struggle to get the vaccine — because he lost his father to covid last year.
“She’s mourning not only for my dad, but she’s also suffering as an adult now because she depended on him for certain tasks,” Lerma said. “He would’ve handled all this.”
‘Desperate’ Seniors Look for Help
Philip Bretsky, a primary care doctor in Southern California, said his older patients would typically call him or visit a pharmacy for vaccines like the annual flu shot, rather than rely on novel online scheduling systems.
“That’s not how 85-year-olds have interacted with the health care system, so it’s a complete disconnect,” he said. “These folks are basically just investing a lot of time and not getting anything out of it.”
California’s recent decision to change its vaccination plan and open it up to those over 65 only adds to the confusion.
Bretsky said his patients are being told to call their doctor for information, but he isn’t even sure when his office, which is authorized to give the vaccines, will receive any.
“Patients in this age group want to know that they’re at least being heard or somebody is thinking about the challenges they have,” he said.
There are some local efforts to make that happen.
In the village of Los Lunas, New Mexico, public health workers held an in-person sign-up event for seniors who needed assistance or simply a device connected to the internet.
A Florida senior center recently held a vaccination registration event and a clinic specifically for people over 80 who might not have a computer.
Novich, the clinical psychologist in New York, teamed up with a few other people to create an informal help service for older adults. It began as a small endeavor, advertised through a few synagogues and his Facebook page. They’ve now helped more than 100 people get shots.
“We have a huge number of requests that are just piling up,” said Novich.
“People are really desperate and they’re also confused because nobody has actually explained to them when they are expected to get vaccinated. … It’s a big mess.”
The ongoing shortage of vaccines has led Novich to halt the service for now.

Motivated by his son Beau, Joe Biden pledges help for veterans with burn pit health issues
Throughout his presidential campaign, one of the most striking elements of Joe Biden‘s appeal has been his empathy. The personal tragedies he has suffered inform his interactions with voters who are also experiencing loss. And his sorrow could also guide policy decisions as commander-in-chief, offering assistance to veterans who may be suffering from service-related medical conditions — as he hint he believes his son did.
With a familiar quiver in his voice, Biden regularly on the campaign trail shares memories of his son Beau, who died in 2015 from glioblastoma brain cancer. A handful of times Biden detailed how he thinks his son’s cancer may have been related in part to the large, military base burn pits during his 2009 service in the Iraq War.
“He volunteered to join the National Guard at age 32 because he thought he had an obligation to go,” Biden told a Service Employees International Union convention in October. “And because of exposure to burn pits — in my view, I can’t prove it yet — he came back with Stage Four glioblastoma.”
Biden’s precise language — “in my view, I can’t prove it yet” — appears to be intentional as he lends his voice to the ongoing and somewhat controversial debate over whether the burn pits caused lasting health issues for American veterans.
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden (R) talks with his son, U.S. Army Capt. Beau Biden (L) at Camp Victory on the outskirts of Baghdad on July 4, 2009. Biden said that America’s role in Iraq was switching from deep military engagement to one of diplomatic support, ahead of a complete withdrawal from the country in 2011. “WE DON’T HAVE 20 YEARS”
As the Iraq and Afghanistan military operations grew, so did the installations of bigger burn pits on military bases, rather than the smaller burn barrels that had previously been used. The pits were meant to dispose of everything from garbage to sensitive documents and even more hazardous materials.
“They build as big as this auditorium,” Biden said to a CNN town hall audience in February, “It’s about 8-to-10-feet-deep and they put everything in it they want to dispose of and can’t leave behind, from flammable fuel to plastics to all range of things.”
But in the middle of a war zone, concern about the burn pits was sometimes considered secondary to other safety issues.
“You’ve got dust storms, you have the enemy, you have all sorts of things going on that some smoke in the air doesn’t really seem like as important of an issue at the moment,” Jim Mowrer, who befriended Beau at Camp Victory in Iraq in 2009, told CBS News. Other times, Mowrer, 34, who now serves as co-chair for the Veterans for Biden committee, said he tried to filter the air by wearing a face covering.
“The concern factor became more of a concern after we came home,” Beau’s overseas boss, Command JAG Kathy Amalfitano, 59, told CBS News. Amalfitano said she remembers discussing the burn pits with Beau a few times, but added “I know our thought process was that this was part of the deployment.”
Biden is not alone in thinking burn pits impacted soldiers’ health.
Since 2014, more than 200,000 Afghanistan and Iraq War veterans have registered in the “Airborne Hazards and Open Burn Pit Registry” run by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), detailing exposure to service-related airborne hazards from burn pit smoke and other pollution.
And while these veteran health concerns seem widespread, the VA’s policy only recognizes “temporary” irritation from burn pit exposure. Citing a range of studies, the department states that “research does not show evidence of long-term health problems from exposure to burn pits.”
One ongoing study is by National Jewish Health and funded by the Defense Department, and is examining lung issues and has yielded “a spectrum of diseases that are related to deployment,” the study’s principal investigator Dr. Cecile Rose told CBS News last year. ” [The diseases] weren’t there before, and they are clearly there after people have returned from these arid and extreme environments.” However, Rose cautioned that findings are complicated by other possible culprits, like desert dust and diesel exhaust.
Advocates for veterans say not enough is being done to address veterans’ health claims regarding the burn pits. From 2007 to 2018, the VA processed 11,581 disability compensation claims that had “at least one condition related to burn pit exposure,” a department spokesman told The New York Times last year. But the department only accepted 2,318 of these claims. The department said the rest did not show evidence connected to military service or the condition in the claim was not “officially diagnosed,” the Times noted.
The VA did not respond to CBS News’ request this week for updated numbers.
“I always push back on…the VA administration folks who try to use the ‘perfect study’ as a criteria to show proof,” California Representative Raul Ruiz, a doctor and vocal burn pits critic, told CBS News. Ruiz criticized the VA’s reliance on long-term studies to validate clams.
“We don’t have 20 years because then these veterans are going to be dying without the care they need,” Ruiz said.
A report five years ago by a Defense Department inspector general said it was “indefensible” that military personnel “were put at further risk from the potentially harmful emissions from the use of open-air burn pits.” But the Supreme Court last year rejected a victims’ lawsuit against contractors who oversaw some of the burn pits.
“If these [burn pits] had happened in the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease and Control would have this corrected immediately,” said Iraq War veteran Jeremy Daniels, adding he believes burn pits caused him to be wheelchair bound.
MODERN-DAY “AGENT ORANGE”?
Biden on the campaign trail invoked the healthcare struggles of Vietnam veterans exposed to the herbicide Agent Orange to explain the need to address burn pits.
“You were entitled to military compensation if you could prove that Agent Orange caused whatever the immune system damage was to you,” Biden said, accenting the word “prove” during a Veterans Day town hall in Oskaloosa, Iowa. “But you had to prove it and it’s very hard to prove.”
After reading a book on burn pits detailing Beau’s case, Biden has advocated easing this burden of proof for veterans who say the burn pits have harmed them in some way, as he first told PBS.

Biden has a plan that pushes for congressional approval to expand the list of “presumptive conditions”– meaning veterans’ health conditions would be presumed causal to the burn pits making them eligible for greater VA healthcare. He also aims to expand the claim eligibility period for toxic exposure conditions to five years after service instead of one year and increase federal research by $300 million in part to focus on toxic exposure from burn pits.
This push has intensified in recent years on Capitol Hill, and bills funding more research into burn pits have already been signed by President Trump. The recent National Defense Authorization Act also required the Department of Defense to implement a plan to phase out burn pits and disclose the locations of the still-operating pits. Enclosed incinerators are an alternative.
There were nine active military burn pits in the Middle East as of last year, according to the Defense Department’s April 2019 “Open Burn Pit Report to Congress” shared with CBS News, though some advocates think the actual number is higher.
Some veterans expressed doubt that recent efforts will lead to more aid for veterans exposed to burn pits, given the slow-moving bureaucracy and concern over higher health care costs. And others question whether a Biden administration would act more decisively than the Obama administration, which primarily focused on long-term studies.
But Biden says that his motivation is far greater than his family’s own personal loss, and that the “only sacred” commitment the United States has is to American soldiers.
“It’s not because my son died…[he] went from very, very healthy but he lived in the bloom of those burn pits for a long time. He’s passed—it doesn’t affect him,” Biden said in Oskaloosa. “But the point is that every single veteran shouldn’t have to prove and wait until science demonstrates beyond a doubt…We just have to change the way we think a little bit.”
May 30 will mark the five-year anniversary of Beau Biden’s death.

A royal mess: How Brexit has tarnished the crown
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/a-royal-mess-how-brexit-has-tarnished-the-crown/
A royal mess: How Brexit has tarnished the crown
LONDON — Brexit has breached the gates of Buckingham Palace.
The battle over the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union has rocked some of the country’s most cherished institutions. It has dominated the political debate, paralyzed parliament, pitted Tory against Tory, Labour against Labour and threatened the integrity of the Union. Then late last month, it reached out and touched the queen.
Queen Elizabeth II is the least politically assuming of any sovereign before her. Promoted in the line of succession by the abdication of her uncle, the 93-year-old monarch has spent her more than six decades on the throne cultivating a neutral and institutional role.
“The queen’s personal view is to stay out of politics,” said Robert Lacey, a royal historian and historical consultant on Netflix series “The Crown.” “It’s her nature to be shy. It’s her nature not to intervene. She doesn’t believe it’s the constitutional monarch’s role to make interventions, to change the rules or change things.”
But when Boris Johnson — the 14th prime minister to serve under her reign — asked her to shut down parliament for four weeks, she couldn’t avoid being dragged into the political fray.

The queen had little choice in the matter. Tradition dictates she grant the prime minister his requests. But with Johnson’s move seen as an effort to prevent parliament from blocking a no-deal Brexit and the country so deeply divided between Leave and Remain, any answer she gave was bound to infuriate one side or the other.
And some of the reaction was, indeed, furious.
“The. Queen. Did. Not. Save. Us,” tweeted Labour MP and former frontbencher Kate Osamor. Shortly afterwards she added: “The queen should look at what happened to her cousin Tino ex-King of Greece when you enable a right-wing coup! Monarchy abolished!”
A petition launched by the anti-Brexit campaign group Best for Britain asking the queen to refuse the request from Johnson quickly racked up more than 50,000 signatures, and the sovereign was soon fielding requests from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson to meet with them and hear their complaints about the decision.
“A lot of people half hoped that the queen would somehow come riding in on a stallion or one of her corgis to save the day,” said Adam Wagner, a human rights lawyer and expert on constitutional law. “But the idea that the sovereign plays any substantial role in this farce is complete nonsense.”
Medieval trappings
In another political context, Queen Elizabeth’s decision to follow with tradition and grant Johnson’s request would have passed unremarked.
While the monarchy retains much of its medieval trappings, its power has been in decline ever since King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215.
According to protocol, the queen appoints the prime minister and accepts his or her resignation. She opens parliament almost every year with “the Queen’s Speech,” outlining the government’s program. The arcane tradition sees her leave Buckingham Palace in a horse-drawn carriage and ride to the Houses of Parliament, escorted by the Household Cavalry.
Once there, she leads the Royal Procession through the House of Lords, wearing the Imperial State Crown and the Robe of State. An official to the Lords, known as Black Rod, goes to the Commons to summon members and take them to the Lords Chamber. When he reaches the door of the Commons it is shut in his face and he has to knock three times to gain entry — to symbolize the authority of the Commons over the Lords. The MPs file into the upper chamber and listen as the queen reads out the government program for that parliamentary session from a throne.

But formalities like these aside, the British monarchy has lost almost all of its real authority. The queen neither writes, nor necessarily agrees with the contents of, the Queen’s Speech. The last monarch to dismiss a prime minister was King William IV, who sacked William Lamb in 1834. It did not go well for him. His chosen replacement, Robert Peel, could not command the confidence of the Commons and an election was called, which Lamb won.
And the last time a British monarch refused to follow the advice of their government was in 1936 when King Edward VIII wanted to marry American socialite Wallace Simpson, said Robert Hazell, a professor of government and the constitution at University College London. Edward was forced to abdicate after holding the throne for just 12 months.
The monarchy’s few remaining powers include “the right to claim ownership of any unmarked mute swan swimming in open waters,” the titular ownership of any whales or porpoises swimming in British waters, and the right to drive without a license.
“It is no longer acceptable for a modern monarch in a parliamentary democracy to have any political power,” said Hazell, noting a similar decline of power in constitutional monarchies elsewhere in Europe.
“They are all now in effect neutered monarchs in that they no longer exercise any real political power and they have all become much less assertive,” he said.
Rule of law
Because the country has no written constitution, the queen’s role in public life and what her ceremonial powers really mean exist in a grey area. A small number of people clearly thought Elizabeth could have — and maybe should have — refused Johnson’s request to suspend parliament. But had she done so, it would have triggered a constitutional crisis.
Constitutional experts have also been quizzed in recent weeks over whether the queen might have to intervene and dismiss the prime minister if Johnson lost a confidence vote but refused to resign. The Commons would have to give a clear signal that another candidate could command a majority in order for her to do so.
Some Brexiteers have also suggested that the government neuter efforts by parliamentary rebels to delay Brexit by refusing to send their legislation for “Royal Assent,” the process by which the queen agrees to turn a bill into law. The process once required the monarch’s signature, but it is now a quick formality that does not involve her directly.
One legal expert said the constitution would be thrown into “crazy territory” if the government tried to pull such a move.
And so it’s perhaps not surprising that Johnson’s maneuver — and the queen’s involvement in it — has fueled calls for putting the constitution down on paper.
The Queen’s relationship with the prime minister is all about formality — from their first official meeting after Boris Johnson was elected, to his request that she shut down parliament for four weeks | Pool photo by Victoria Jones via Getty Images
“We can’t run a country like this, we need a written constitution,” said Conservative MP Rory Stewart. “We’re only able to survive with an unwritten constitution because people behave, but as people push the limits more and more we need to clarify this stuff.”
Labour MP and shadow Treasury minister Clive Lewis went a step further and called for a constitutional convention.
“We have a political constitution that is barely fit for the 19th century, let alone the 20th or 21st,” Lewis said. “It’s high time, once the dust has settled on Brexit, that this country really begins to understand that a democratic constitutional convention is necessary to work out what structure we are going to have for the United Kingdom.”
One of the key questions in any such venture would be the role of the monarch. “I’m not sure what the appetite is for a republic but I think that should be on the agenda as something we should discuss,” said Lewis.
While few are calling for an end of the monarchy, the creation of a written constitution could curtail its powers for good.
“With our historic norms crumbling, even ardent monarchists will see that only a written constitution can preserve the decorative role of the crown while protecting the rest of us from prime ministers acting like absolutist kings or queens,” said Anthony Barnett, the author and co-founder of the OpenDemocracy website | Pool photo by Leon Neal via Getty Images
“On one hand, you could have a written constitution that puts the monarch as a purely titular head of state that does not even have the formal power that she has now,” said Wagner, the human rights barrister and constitutional law expert. “Or you write exactly what powers the monarch has into the constitution. You could also have a president, and the queen could be a figurehead rather than have any political role at all.”
Anthony Barnett, the author and co-founder of the OpenDemocracy website, argues that the informal checks and balances that used to work in the unwritten British constitution — of Cabinet, government and the civil service, among other things — have been broken by a succession of prime ministers eager to bend the rules in their favor.
Johnson’s involvement of the queen to close down parliament was just the latest example of many.
“With our historic norms crumbling, even ardent monarchists will see that only a written constitution can preserve the decorative role of the crown while protecting the rest of us from prime ministers acting like absolutist kings or queens,” he said.

9 indie mags you should read this summer
If you’re in search of some fresh and inspiring reading material to take on holiday this year (or to read in office with a coffee if you’re not going away), then look no further than these gorgeous magazines.
Large-scale commercial magazine publishing houses may be under pressure from every angle these days, but the independent design magazine scene has never been so exciting, with new titles launching regularly on every esoteric topic you can think of.
We’ve gathered a sterling selection of magazine recommendations from those in the know. So here are nine magazines for you to check out while the sun is still shining…
01. Special Request
Special Request is a new broad culture journal, currently on issue 2
“It is too simple a thing to look at one part of a culture… culture is the combination of many different things working in concert.” This is the mantra by which the beautifully produced journal Special Request operates.
Its lofty ambition is to explore “the entire human experience piece by piece… subjecting it to sometimes forensic, sometimes scathing, sometimes interesting analysis from the world’s finest minds.”
Jeremy Leslie, founder of magCulture, is a fan, and recommends the newly-released second issue, which celebrates the golden age of television across 124 pages of 120gsm offset stock, finished off with a gold-foiled 400gsm cover.
Leslie picks out some personal highlights from the issue: “Antoine de Caunes recalls Eurotrash, Ben Loory and Haruki Murakami offer some new fiction, and the visual highlight is Alex de Mora and Marisha Green’s still-life tribute to Beavis and Butthead,” he says.
“It closes with an image of an old-fashioned cathode ray television set, floating away against a 70s New York skyline.”
02. Berlin Quarterly
European title Berlin Quarterly combines in-depth reportage, literature and visual culture
Calling itself a “European review of long form journalism, literature and the arts”, Berlin Quarterly is a fascinating blend of in-depth reportage, literature and visual culture that Steve Watson, creator of indie mag subscription service Stack, firmly recommends.
“It’s a heady mix of essays, fiction, poetry, photography and artwork,” Watson enthuses. “Based out of the German capital, it wears that city’s bohemian reputation on its sleeve.”
It’s definitely worth slipping into the suitcase for when you fancy getting stuck into some meatier content.
03. The Plant
The Plant is produced in Barcelona twice a year
According to its creators, The Plant magazine delivers content by plant lovers, for plant lovers, in a “simple, personal and cozy way”.
It’s currently on its 11th issue, Leslie recommends taking a look. “Horticulture is just a starting point for this magazine, now a mainstay of the indie scene,” he explains.
“Ryan Lowry’s opening photographs of the landscape, cacti and fences of the US-Mexico border set a manifesto-like tone that continues throughout issue 11. Mercedes Villalba looks at the resilience of nature, and Lindsay Sekulowicz examines Amazonian artefacts to learn how humankind has always cultivated nature.”
“Against all this, a guide to growing Aloe Vera may seem prosaic – but this element remains a key part of the magazine,” adds Leslie. The Plant’s team describes itself as “a curious observer of ordinary plants and other greenery”, and this simple love for natural life shines through on every page.
04. Racquet
Racquet says it’s about tennis, but it covers so much more, so beautifully
Rather like The Plant, Racquet is “one of those indie titles that purports to be about one thing (in this case, tennis) but in fact uses that as a prism through which to explore all sorts of things. You’re never quite sure what you’re going to turn the page and read about,” says Rob Alderson, former editor-in-chief of Printed Pages, who now heads up WeTransfer’s editorial division, This Works.
A quarterly title that celebrates the art, ideas, style and culture that surround tennis, Racquet “fondly remembers the swashbuckling sport of the tennis boom of the 1970s and ’80s” and aspires to “restore some of that swagger to today’s game.”
“It looks and feels beautiful – as a lot of indie titles do – but the writing is exquisite and it’s edited really well too, which makes for a perfect print experience,” adds Alderson.
05. Shelf Heroes
Each copy of Self Heroes issue F includes a free Fifth Element woven patch, three postcards and a sticker
A wonderfully simple editorial premise lies at the heart of the intermittently printed fanzine Shelf Heroes, the magazine “created by people who love cinema.”
It’s working its way through the alphabet, and celebrating a diverse batch of films that start with each letter: “Some great, some not so great.” Issue one, as you might expect, was A – with films including Alien, Apocalypse Now, Avatar and American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt.
“Shelf Heroes has now reached the letter ‘F’ – and I can’t wait to dive into Festen, First Blood, Fargo and Four Weddings,” chuckles Watson.
06. The Happy Reader
The Happy Reader is a book-loving collaboration between Penguin Classics and Fantastic Man
A collaboration between Penguin Classics and Fantastic Man, The Happy Reader is a ‘virtual book club’. It’s now on its ninth instalment, which includes a focus on Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.
“This classic is contextualised by musician Andy Partridge writing about sailor’s songs, a visual taxonomy of messaging flags, and a treasure hunt – although the prize has just been won,” reveals Leslie.
“It’s all fronted with a lengthy interview with model/actress/bookshop owner Lily Cole, all beautifully presented as ever.”
Clearly The Happy Reader is worth a look this summer, as Watson picked it out as well. “I can’t think of better beach reading,” he grins.
07. Pit
Pit is a new magazine for BBQ aficionados
Nothing says summer like a sizzling barbecue, and Pit magazine has capitalised on our enduring passion for cooking outdoors over a open flame with an artisan publication like no other.
According to the team, it’s all about “the smell of smoke in the air, the singed hairs on your fingers and the pink ring on a rack of ribs you cooked at the end of your garden.”
But within that overarching topic, the magazine delves into global cultures: “From the American BBQ to the Polynesian Imu fire pits, Jamaican jerk drums and mackerel grills lining the shores of the glittering Bosphorus in Istanbul.”
Pit plans to release three issues during the (hopefully) warm months of the year, with the second due out in August. “I’m really hoping I can get hold of it in time for the holidays, to give us some inspiration over the coals,” says Watson.
08. Real Review
Real Review issue 4 reviews everything from the EU flag to Japanese boyfriends for hire
The quarterly flagship publication of the Real Foundation, Real Review was named Launch of the Year at the 2016 Stack Awards. Since then, according to Watson, it has gone from strength to strength.
“Its roots are in architecture, but this ingenious review ranges far and wide to challenge the way we see the world,” he explains.
Leslie is also an advocate, drawing attention to the title’s unique format: square, with a vertical fold.
“Real Review deserves praise too for its editorial design and content,” argues Leslie. “It examines contemporary life with a spare and intelligent vocabulary that both tests and thrills. Content and form that should be at utter variance somehow complement each other perfectly.”
09. mono.kultur
Each issue of mono.kultur is dedicated to one artist from various fields
Also hailing from Berlin, quarterly A5 title mono.kultur focuses on art and culture, or more specifically the creative minds who make the most exciting music, film, literature and visual art happen. One at a time.
Each issue features just a single interviewee, carefully selected and beautifully designed. Its online description is a paragon of German efficiency: “Questions and answers. Conversations with the interesting few. In full length and depth, extensive and unfiltered.”
The current issue, 43, is dedicated to artist/musician Fatima Al Qadiri, and it’s Leslie’s final pick. “The presentation is smart but simple, with text and photography clearly defined and separate,” he begins.
“The exciting part is the additional images, printed on a special acetate substrate called Stafix – static electricity makes these ‘stick’ to the pages of the magazine, allowing the reader to peel off and replace images over other images.” What better way to spend your summer?
To explore the indie mag scene in more depth, magCulture will be running its fifth-annual ModMag conference in London on 2 November, an event that never fails to inspire.
