Six Plays by Alan Bennett: The Old Crowd (1.3, LWT, 1979)
"Do you do this full time?"
"We're actors. We act."
"Acting, oh that's exciting. Are you resting?"
"'Scuse me?"
"That's what it's called, isn't it, when - when you're out of work? Resting?"
"I call it out of work."

I'm rewatching because I love DT & Billie Piper just that much, plus John Hurt...and the moments with the drs being silly boys are still fun. But I'm about to bitch about it.
Just to rant where I've never ranted before (I wasn't on tumblr when that came out), it still brings up bitterness. They advertised the 50th, they put it in theaters and told us BP & DT would be in it, knowing they were favorites for a majority of fandom (at the time), only to actually cast BP as a character who couldn't interact with either doctor. Like, I'm not even mad they didn't bring Rose into it (not that mad---I love her, I'd have loved to see her play with three doctors), but refusing to let the character interact just so Moffatt wouldn't have to be bothered writing any kind of emotional reaction either doctor might have had to seeing Rose fucking Bad Wolf Tyler show up was just petty or lazy or both. So many of us went to see it in theaters just to get a throw-away, casual 'bad wolf?" line from DT at the very end of the movie. Like, he absolutely knew what audience he would attract and was happy to take our money and give a massive middle finger all at once.
Plotwise, also, it was just such a letdown. I'm with Christopher Eccleston, who wouldn't be involved since it basically undid his entire storyline and motivation, which started the series in the first place. Which is fucked, because we would've been lucky to get CE back for even a moment.

WHAT was the reason for Sherlock being so jealous about all the girls John would date. Why was John only able to have a successful relationship AFTER Sherlock died? What the hell Moffatt

Does anyone remember when Steven Moffatt was the showrunner of Doctor Who and Sherlock at the same time and he introduced a married lesbian couple in Doctor Who who were supposed to be a genderswapped Sherlock and John, but he kept saying that the actual Sherlock and John he was writing in Sherlock weren't gay and would never be gay and the audience was reading into things too much, but said in an interview he would never make gay jokes for no reason without an endgame planned because that would be homophobic? And also one of the lesbians was a lizard? That was kinda weird, right?
Not the lizard part, though, that part ruled.

Doctor Who: The Visitation (19.4, BBC, 1982)
"I feel as though you've just killed an old friend."
"It is with some sadness that I tell you you are about to join it."
"Why not smile and let me live?"
#doctor who#the visitation#classic doctor who#bbc#1982#eric saward#peter moffatt#peter davison#janet fielding#sarah sutton#matthew waterhouse#michael robbins#michael melia#peter van dissel#james charlton#neil west#eric dodson#john savident#anthony calf#john baker#valerie fyfer#still continuing to dig up the Who stories i missed as a nipper‚ and for the first time in recent memory i do find myself just slightly#disappointed. idk‚ i enjoyed the general plot outline here‚ the design of the terileptils is ambitious (if the execution not quite matching#it) and Michael Robbins is an enormously fun mvp; but that plot is propping up a fairly pedestrian script (Saward was capable of much#better)‚ the villains aren't fleshed out enough and Robbins is the only character who feels genuine‚ with every one else a 2d insert (ok so#most are under psychic control‚ but i should have been able to tell which ones were and weren't...). also a terrible waste of the wonderful#John Savident! but the film inserts look great (has this had a blu release yet? surely a prime contender) and i enjoyed five and Mace's#little double act. i will say that the tardis fam in full bickering mode is not my preferred group model: Nyssa is the only reasonable#person in the group here and she spends most of the story isolated in the tardis (bc she's doing what she was told to do!) so that's a#little disappointing. idk maybe my opinions will soften. not bad by any means‚ but could have been quite a bit better with a little polish

The Doctor and the Unpopular Opinion
Can we talk Doctor Who and RTD?
I know that there are lots of fans of his, but watching these three specials reminded me of everything that I couldn't stand about his first run with the show.
Yes, I get that it's a television show dealing with all sorts of aliens that can do all sorts of things, but once those parameters have been established, normal rules apply.
So, in "The Star Beast", once the Meep activates his spaceship, the engine starts to destroy various roads through London, presumably because the engine needed power that would be tapped from the Earth and ultimately destroy London. Got it. No problem. And then when the engine is shut down, the roads just automatically repair themselves. ?!?!? I mean, I can live with that, I'm just not thrilled and think it's incredibly lazy writting.
No, my bigger issue was in "The Giggle." The climax gave me flashbacks to RTD's Master. Remember John Simm leaping around the junkyard, laughing manically, shooting lightning from his fingers? Unfortunately, I do, which brings me to the climax of "The Giggle". The Toymaker and the two Doctors having a game of catch, but one which is being played at superhuman speed? You can make the arguement that The Toymaker could, given that he is not originally of this dimension and has powers to manipulate reality. But the two Doctors? No. That's not who the Doctor is. Intelligent, yes. Clever (and I hate using this ever since Moffatt was the showrunner), yes. Alien, yes. But not superhuman. I mean, if that was the case he would have easily outrun the doppleganger in "Wild Blue Yonder."
I'm ok with Doctor Who being silly. I'm ok with it not taking itself seriously. But this is just an easy out, a deus ex machina, where before, and I thought it was highlighted more with 13 than with other recent Doctors, the companions helped to work out the solution. There was no solution other than the Doctor(s) exhibiting superhuman physical attributes. It's lazy. It's also a bit insulting.
As for "The Giggle" on the whole, it was long expositions and Neil Patrick Harris being Neil Patrick Harris with only the barest of plots. I mean, I liked the premise, but once it was established...there was nothing to it. Also, the disembodied hand picking up the tooth is the exact same ending with Simm's Master, with his ring being snatched off a pyre. Only, the tooth was literally on the edge of Avenger's UNIT Tower and the owner of the hand would have had to have been hovering in mid air. I will be disappointed, but not surprised, if Sacha Dhawan doesn't return as the Master. (Also, why can't RTD move on with characters? Bringing back Tennent for 14 is one thing, which I also don't get other than RTD wanted to do more Doctor/Donna stories, but now he's just hanging out in Camden? His time is over. Move on.)
Everybody has their own opinions of Doctor Who, and there are those who have no issue my issues, which is fine. My extremely unpopular opinion is that 13 was the best of NuWho because I think Chibnall understood wholly what makes Doctor Who Doctor Who.

I remember fics booming during long Sherlock hiatuses back in the day.
True, but tumblr was still extremely popular at this point. Not saying it's dead now, but the porn ban definitely had an impact. I also think the outrage at the writers (insane and idiotic as it was) kept it in the mainstream. Back in the 2010s my mom knew about the drama surrounding Moffatt/Gatiss and the queerbaiting allegations. She didn't even watch the show, she heard about it on Pinterest of all things. Hell, the only reason I watched the show was bc I saw a thread here in like 2013.
We have a few people who are mad at the ending of go2, but it's nothing compared to the hubbub around things like Sherlock or SPN. The internet thrives on discourse, so it's not as interesting to others outside the fandom.
There's also the matter of internet etiquette and how, over the years, fans have come to expect consistent content and pay authors little to no mind. But that is a whole 'nother can of worms. I expect the go2 fics will become more popular over time, and I hope the lack of engagement isn't too discouraging bc I do really enjoy what I've read so far.
Hmmm. Yeah, this reminds me of what I talked about like last week or so with all of the tumblr polls I've seen asking how long people have been on here saying that the vast majority of users have been here for at least a decade. Sherlock's prime definitely lined up with tumblr's prime (I only watched it because an irl friend was blogging about it on here lol). I didn't come here until 2013 and was pretty blissfully unaware of the discourse for about a year, but I have heard from other fans that the online fan situation around that show started to get nuts right after s2 in 2012. Outrage does drive engagement, whatever that may look like. I think the ending of Sherlock s2 was perfect material for fanfiction with everyone wanting to know how Sherlock survived the Fall and how John would react upon his return, too. There were soooo many Post-Reichenbach fics, it was an entire genre. And then with s3, there was a flood of fix-it fics with people's anger over Mary, and exploration of her villainy.
You're right, gomens s2 doesn't have that same effect because it's pretty obvious that this is being written like a classic love story and everything is going to be resolved in the third act. There's no mainstream backlash. The only people who are angry about it, from what I've seen, are people who apparently don't know how basic storytelling works and are really pissed at Aziraphale (that's another reason why people might not be reading fics tbh), and those big mad over the kiss because, "it's ruins ace rep" and blah blah blah. But those people are in the clear minority. Some people may not feel the need to read fic because they trust all will be well in the next season and they just have to wait. Basically, the source material satisfies them enough that they're not seeking out fic in the same way they were after s1's homoerotic ambiguity.
You're totally right that fans have gotten worse to content creators in recent years. They want a constant stream of free fic and art without having to, god forbid, hit a heart button or kudos button. I've been in fandom spaces for a long time and that's definitely worsened over time, although I'm lucky that some fans have been nice enough about my gomens fics to make art/translations/etc. But that's for my s1 stuff and I know that's certainly not the case for everyone's fics. I hope the lack of engagement isn't too discouraging, too, but I completely understand if it is for some people.

When Elvis arrived in Honolulu on January 9th, 1973, several days ahead of the Aloha From Hawaii rehearsal concert and satellite broadcast, he was helicoptered from the airport to the Hilton Village for a filmed reception with fans, and where he had a few brief words with an old friend, ‘Uncle’ Tom Moffatt.
Tom Moffatt was a DJ and concert promoter who, according to his 2016 obituary on Hawaii News Now, ‘made his name in the islands in 1957, when he brought Elvis Presley to perform before thousands of adoring fans’. Tom Moffatt described Elvis' first show in Hawaii as one of the most exciting events he had ever presented; ‘I remember he did Hound Dog and then everybody's screaming. He jumped off the stage, got on his knees with his guitar and the place went bananas.’
Moffatt had been promoting Elvis’ Hawaiian fan club around the time of Love Me Tender, organising a competition to win the hat Elvis wore in the movie and receiving 53 000 entries, alerting Colonel Parker to Elvis’ enormous local popularity. Elvis played three very successful shows in Honolulu over November 10th and 11th, 1957, cementing the relationship. Keen to secure Elvis for his first touring show after discharge from the Army, Moffatt bailed up Colonel Parker who was vacationing in Hawaii while Elvis was still in Germany, securing a commitment on the promise of a huge petition signed by local fans, urging Elvis to come back to Hawaii.
The result would be the famous USS Arizona Memorial benefit show in 1961, which raised over $65 000, more than 10% of the final cost of the project. According to Moffatt in an interview with Dutch television, the idea for the benefit aspect was Colonel Parker’s alone, responding to news that the entire memorial project was about to collapse through lack of funding. Parker and Elvis covered all their own expenses (as they did in 1975 for the McComb Tornado benefit in Mississippi).
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser described Tom Moffatt as ‘one of the most influential figures in the Hawaii entertainment industry’, the first rock DJ in Hawaii and one of the pioneers of modern Top 40 Radio, dominating the ratings throughout the 1960s on radio station KPOI. He was clearly liked and trusted by both Elvis and Colonel Parker, and was given access for interviews, including long-distance by phone to Germany, and later brought some Hawaiian fans, contest winners, to visit Elvis on the Hollywood set of Blue Hawaii.
Over six-decades as a concert and event promoter, Tom Moffatt Productions brought a spectacular roster of artists to Hawaii, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, The Shirelles, Connie Francis, the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Everly Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr, Liza Minelli, Michael and Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston and the Eagles. According to his obituary, he presented almost every big name in the music business at least once, presented classical concerts, ballet and musical theatre, and was the leading promoter of ‘mega-concerts’ at the 50 000 seat Aloha Stadium. He also ran record labels and was strongly committed to actively promoting local artists and material.
He continued working as a promoter and DJ into his 80s, and passed away in December 2016, aged 85.

On September 21st 1756 John McAdam, the surveyor who introduced the macadam system of road surfacing, was born in Ayr.
Please note some sources will state 23rd September and this seems to be a bone of contention amongst local historians.
As a young man he made his fortune selling cargos seized during the American Revolution in New York, and later operating coal and ironworks in Scotland where he was a turnpike trustee, before eventually settling in Bristol in 1802.  Here he worked as a surveyor, responsible for 149 miles of road. At this time, roads were uneven and full of potholes and ruts. This made coach, wagon and horse journeys long and uncomfortable, with damage to equipment and freight. Realising the importance of a smooth, compact and lasting road surface, and encouraged by Parliamentary enquiries, he developed his revolutionary new methods.
McAdam put forward an entirely new method of road construction as compared to all the previous methods. The first attempt to improve the road condition was made by him in 1815. Macadam was the Surveyor-General of Roads in England and his new concept of road construction became known by the year 1827.
Macadam realised that the soil subgrade being the lowest portion of the pavement should be prepared properly and kept drained so as to carry the load transmitted through the pavement.
He was the first engineer to suggest that heavy foundation stones are not at all necessary to be placed at the bottom layer of construction. Macadam suggested that instead of placing large foundation stones, small size broken stones shall be spread over the prepared soil subgrade and compacted.   Similarly, the next layer of the pavement also was constructed above this layer with small broken stones.
Though the total thickness of construction was less than previous methods, this technique could serve as a carriageway in a better way due to improved load dispersion characteristics of compacted broken stone aggregates of smaller sizes.
The size of broken stones for the top layer was decided based on the stability under animal-drawn vehicles. The pavement surface was also prepared with a cross slope for drainage of surface water.
This was the first method based on scientific thinking. It was realised that the stresses due to the wheel load of traffic get decreased at the lower layers of the pavement and therefore it is not necessary to provide large and strong boulder stones as 'foundation or soling course' at the lowest layer of the pavement. This method became very popular far and wide.
McAdam maintained a house in Moffatt, where he spent part of each summer, and it was there he died in 1836, aged eighty. There is a memorial to him in Broxbourne Parish Church, describing him as “the great improver of British roads”, while his Hoddesdon home, now called Montagu House, bears a blue plaque.
John Loudon McAdam was said to have had a short temper with fools and opponents, but to have been mostly a kind, gentlemanly man.  He spent a considerable amount of his own money on his road-building schemes, asking no reward and receiving very little.
He died poorer than he was born; but every person in this country and beyond who takes for granted that there are roads to use owes McAdam a vast debt of gratitude.

Well I did watched all 13 series of modern who and here's what I have to say
I quiet liked this version of the show, but I maybe biased because this version of the show got me into the show. I do like that they improved the relationships between the Doctor and their companions. Murray Gold did a fantastic score of the show. I like that some companions help hold the Doctor accountable for the stuff they do. Personally I loved the idea of RTD making the Doctor last of the time lords and having him deal with the fact he was responsible, but I kinda of wished that part wasn't lead onto until later down the line. In fact kinda wished it was revealed in the 50th with the secret regeneration.
One grip is that there were too many tragic endings for the companions. I didn't like that the Daleks got less scary. Also a minor grip is that chibnall forgot the Cybermen already solve their death sutition with them adopting to people attacking then.
Now on to my Doctor rankings
7. 13th Doctor(Jodie Whittaker) 6. 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) 5. War Doctor(John Hurt) 4. 9th Doctor(Christopher Eccleston) 3. 10th Doctor(David Tennant) 2. Ruth Doctor(Jo Martin) 1. 12th Doctor(Peter Capaldi)
Tumblr media
Since compqnions play major roles of this version of the show. So here are my top 5 companions
5. Bill Potts(Pearl Mackie) 4. Graham O'Brian(Bradley Walsh) 3. River Song(Alex Kingston) 2. Wilfred Moffatt(Bernard Cribbins) 1. Clara Oswald(Jenna Coleman)
Tumblr media
Just gonna add a pic of Cribbins as a tribute
Tumblr media
Finally top 5 episode based on the incarnations (sorry to Ruth anf War, but they are only shown for a brief time)
5. Dalek 4. Village of the Angel's 3. Blink 2. Heaven Sent 1. Vincent and the Doctor
