On the Edge (2001)

It’s not that On the Edge is bad movie, it’s that if it interests you, it offers no surprises. I enjoyed the film more than I didn’t, but there's no way I'll remember any of it.

After nonchalantly attempting suicide following the death of his father, Jonathan (Cillian Murphy) is admitted into a psychiatric hospital. As the young patients get to know each other through therapy sessions, their lives take a turn for the better.

I’m not sure if the film is based on a personal experience. It feels like it is, and that’s a good thing. The characters are realistic, the portrayal of people suffering from mental health disorders is tastefully done, both the patients and the doctors are likable. There aren’t any villains in this picture, just people trying to live their lives as best they can. There are everyday conflicts and triumphs, it’s basically just the life of this guy who begins to re-evaluate his prospects when he begins making friends in the psychiatric hospital he’s admitted in.

There's not much to say. On the Edge is well made, but bland. It could've used a cartoonish villain to spice things up. As Jonathan's doctor, Stephen Rea would've fit the part well. A couple of loonies would've given this film a bit more energy. But this isn’t that kind of movie. It’s kind of like One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest if McMurphy had no Nurse Ratchet to fluster, was only moderately wild, and all of the people he talked to had the chance of making it out of the hospital if only given the necessary care and time. I don’t want to say that John Carney (who co-writers with Daniel James) has made a boring movie but it just doesn’t do anything new. You can see the relationships developing as you would expect and even the moments of big drama are easy to predict.

If you’re debating whether or not to check out On the Edge (maybe you're a big Cillian Murphy fan), you might as well. It’s fine at doing what it does and its biggest flaw is an overall lack of ambition. Cillian Murphy, Tricia Vessey, Jonathan Jackson, and Stephen Rea are appealing actors. Their characters are as well. I’m not upset I spent the 86 minutes required to see the whole story, I can’t see anyone labeling this film as a favourite either. It just doesn’t stand out.
