I’d love to hear something about A Game of Love for the WIP game

Hii, thank you so much for the ask and for tagging me in the game as well!!

So, A Game of Love is an AU I talked extensively with @palominojacoby about a long (long) time ago, but that (unfortunately) didn't make it out of my drafts yet. It is a modern jonsa AU of the movie What Happens in Vegas, that rom-com with Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. Here's a snippet!

Four days later, Sansa wakes up with a blinding, awful headache, and a taste so foul to her tongue it nearly makes her sick.

“By the gods…” she moans, sitting up on the too-soft bed of her hotel room. Anya had let her keep the room she’d gotten for herself and Harry in a rare gesture of goodwill - or apology, perhaps - . It was clearly a room meant for a couple, with lots of flowers and a myriad of heart motifs, but what had crushed Sansa’s heart had actually been the bed, draped in silk-satin sheets and enormous, truly far too big for one person alone…

Sansa lets out the highest high pitched scream of her life, flinging herself off the bed and onto the floor in a painful flash. The man laying by her side screams too, though much more gravely. A shout, really, filled with the awful surprise of being woken up by a particularly shrill siren. His wide eyes find her once he sharply turns her way after shooting straight up into a sitting position on the bed, and then widen further - a thing she wouldn’t have thought possible, really -. 

“Others take me!” the man curses, voice so rough it is more of a growl, really. Sansa covers her face with her hands, knees brought up to her chest, wanting to cry. She can’t believe she’s done this. She’s always known hookups aren’t for her - there’s nothing wrong with them, not at all, it's just that she has a particular way of seeing sex, always has, really, and to her, it is like… an spiritual experience. Like a momentary simbiosis. The thought of merging herself like that with someone she doesn't know, doesn’t love… she’s never wanted that and she can feel her heart sinking in her chest at having done it. “Are you… are you crying?” the man sounds horrified. Sansa lowers her hands, looking up into his face. Well… her cheeks redden. At least she’d done well for herself. 

“No.” she denies, swallowing her tears and smiling wetly up at him. It’s not his fault Sansa has drunkenly done this. By the way he is flinching at the daylight shining through the window, he must be nursing as bad a hangover as Sansa is. It would be cruel to make him feel bad about this. “It was just the light.” she lies. 

He looks a bit suspicious, but thankfully doesn’t question her further. Sansa thinks it might be because he wants to believe her - he’d looked thoroughly stricken at the possibility of having participated in something that’d make her weep -. That sweetens him in her heart, and her features soften further. The way the muscles of his shoulders lose their tension in response assures her she’d been right.

His clothed shoulders. Sansa blushes; it was a very fancy dress-shirt that he was wearing. As fancy as the dress she had on. Had they truly been in such a hurry they’d not even fully undressed? She’s still wearing panties! Had he just pushed them to the side to…

She immediately interrupts that train of thought, mortified. 

Slightly awkward in a sort of endearing way, the man offers her a hand to get up off the floor. Sansa coyly takes it, smiling a bit, trying not to think about how she must have makeup smeared all over her face. 

But then, once she’s standing, her hand in his, she feels the hard coldness of skin meeting metal, looks down, and at once drops his hand, shouting in rage:

“You’re married!” she bellows, indignant. 

She doesn’t even wait to see the confusion in the stranger’s eyes take place on his face, looking all around for her heels, her purse - and the condom. By the Gods, let them have used a condom -, fully enraged, when she is suddenly surprised by the stranger’s own bellow:

“You’re married!” he accuses, pointing indignantly at her. 

Sansa swirls to look at him, unbound and dirty hair flying all around, head pounding - truly pounding. This might be the worst hangover of her life - and follows the line of his finger to where it points: her own left hand, where a shiny, tiny band of silver - or is it white gold? Oh my, it is white gold - elegantly circles her ring finger. An unknown band of white gold; she’d left Harry’s ring to him back at the apartment. Besides, that one had been gold, with a big diamond on top. Her eyes nearly bulge out of their sockets.

“No, no, I’m not….” she mumbles, baffled, mouth dry.

She looks up, wordless, only to find the man holding something, pale all over.

“What?” she asks; “What is it?”  

Quietly, he turns what he’d been holding around: a picture. It’s a picture. Of him, and her. Kissing in front of a man in a sparkly suit. She has a plastic bouquet and is wrapped in what she knows, in her gut, to be his jacket. He has what she can only assume was her veil haphazardly wrapped around his shoulders. He’s somewhat dipping her, and she is clumsily holding onto his shoulders for dear life. 

It’s a picture. A picture of them getting married.

I’ve been working on this a longggg time, think it’s worth continuing?

She finds Jon sitting in front of a Weirwood tree, head in his hands.

“You seem determined to speak with everyone in Winterfell but me,” she says, remaining a few paces from him.

When he doesn’t reply, she pushes further. “I know you cannot forgive me for betraying you, but I would do it again to protect the North.” To protect us, she wants to say.

Jon says nothing and rises from the log, but hesitates before he addresses her. “That’s not it, well, not really.

“Ever since you set foot at Castle Black, you questioned every decision I made – treated me like some green boy incapable of –”

“How could I not when you refused to listen to my advice?”

“This may come as a surprise to you Sansa, but you’re not always right,” he fires back at her. She reels back as though she’s been slapped, but it’s in the way his eyes widen that she knows he didn’t mean to say that aloud.

“Sansa, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean –”

“No, you did mean it. And you are correct. We needed her armies and her dragons to defeat the Dead. But maybe there was a way to do that without sacrificing everything we fought for?” 

“And what if betraying the North was the only way to save it?” Jon raked his hand through his hair. “Seven hells – you met her, Sansa – you warned me that she wouldn’t settle for anything less than seven kingdoms.” 

And suddenly, Jon is there. Only inches in front of her, having caught her between his body and the tree. She can feel his breath, hot and fast on her cheeks. 

“Well maybe, had you warned me, I could have at least supported you in your fool's errand,” she suggests through a clenched jaw. Jon’s hands collide with the tree behind her and she knows that she should feel trapped, but she is confident he would lower them if she asked.

“What have I done to be so undeserving of your trust?” His forehead is pressed to hers and his eyes are closed tightly. She cannot recall ever having seen him like this, desperate and confused.  

“You really don’t know?” Sansa whispered

“If you truly hate me for what I did, then why haven’t you thrown me out? Why the pardon?”

Hate. Hate? Is that what he believes?

Sansa cradles his face between her hands. “Do you think that I care for you so little, and after everything we went through, that any of this would make a difference?”

Related to this post. Hello, friend. I can tell you a bit about both, though it's difficult to stick to "a bit" rather than spoil it all. :) In the Little Mermaid AU, Jon is half human, half merman. He has webbed fingers and toes as well as gills on his neck which allow him to breathe underwater. Because of this (and because of lingering resentments his late father caused), he's an outcast at the Red Keep, the castle from which his half-brother Aegon rules over his island kingdom, the Crownlands. Meanwhile, in the Sea of Westeros, a betrothal has just been announced. Mermaid Sansa Stark, daughter of the Warden of the North, and merman Joffrey Baratheon, prince and heir to the throne, are to be married later in the year. Sansa thought she'd be excited to marry the prince, but she soon realizes she isn't at all. She isn't ready to leave home. Though her father has forbidden it in the past, she travels to the surface of the sea to be alone and process her feelings. Aaaaaand that's enough of that for now. As for The Catalog - oh boy. The original idea has branched into several ideas, and I need to pin down a clearer direction if I ever want to make progress. But what can I tell you about it? Ummmm... It's my one and only example of catching the Hockey!Jon bug. His reputation has been tarnished by his famous ex-girlfriend, Daenerys Stormborn, and he may even get suspended from playing due to her false accusations. Naturally, his publicist or PR rep or whoever thinks fake dating a sweet, normal girl could help repair the damage. Tropes galore! Specifically, "The Catalog" refers to my idea for a dating website, or maybe a website that's more... scandalous than that. See, I have this headcanon about Shae and/or Ros, former sex workers, creating The Catalog as a way to help women do that kind of work from a more empowered position. The Catalog may not sound like an empowering name, but it's inspired by something I read about legal prostitution throughout history and wealthy, generous women who helped build schools and restore cities after catastrophes. I can't find the correct links back right now, go figure, but I think there was something about a French booklet of prostitutes refereed to as "le catalogue." I have a whole backstory that leads Sansa to be on a website like this. But Jon's rep contacts her within, like, 24-48 hours of her making a profile, before she's done anything more than message with a few people, and they have her take it down once she agrees to fake date Jon. The rep thinks they've saved this "sweet, normal girl" from a life of ruin and that Sansa should be thankful. What they don't know is she's got other skeletons in the closet, ones she's not admitting because she needs the money she'll be paid for fake dating Jon. Wahla! You picked the two WIPs that occupy my brain the most often. How'd you know to do that, @cellsshapedlikestars?

Back on my bullshit...thought I was going to work on I Just Think I’ll Scream, but found myself writing my soulmates AU instead. For anyone interested, here is a peek at the next chapter of Use My Skin to Bury Secrets In: 

Tyrion would be lying if he said he wasn’t dying to see the beast scrawled across the Stark girl’s body. Aside from the golden tiger moth impressed upon the back of Jaime’s hand and one impossible display of deadly nightshade blooms opening and closing in a heady rhythm across the inner thigh of a prostitute in Oldtown, he had never examined any other soulmark in the flesh. Cersei’s was well hidden somewhere beneath her skirts, and there was no possibility that she’d ever show it to her despised youngest brother. There were a few books in the library at Casterly Rock that had detailed illustrations of various soulmarks, including a rare and precious record by Maester Anselm who served House Targaryen during the reign of Jaehaerys I. It was through that account that Tyrion learned just how much soulmarks could, under certain circumstances, alter their aspect throughout the lifetime of those who were marked. More curious however was Anselm’s insistence that members of House Targaryen were the only people to ever be graced with the mark of a dragon. 

He wondered what the old maester’s explanation would be now, over two hundred years later, if he saw evidence to the contrary on the little she-wolf before him. It had to be a cosmic jape, embossing the emblem of an all but extinct house on the back of a child too young to bear fruit for a man too close to death to plant any seeds. 

Tyrion eyed the girl, watching her watch her brother as he marched away, called to more important business than easing a child’s troubled spirits. Her cheeks were flushed from the cold, and unshed tears turned her already impossibly blue eyes a more piercing shade. She was a lovely child who would grow into an even lovelier woman, and as he watched her suck in a breath and blink the wetness away, Tyrion was struck by a surprising roil in his belly at the thought of her mark. It tasted bitter on his tongue but before he could place it’s origin, Jon Snow revealed himself at last, slinking around the corner of an outbuilding, his shoulders hunched over his slender frame, chin tucked into his chest as if bracing against the cold.

Back on my shit, still working on My Maid of Stone 😅 I think initially I was thinking it'd be about 2000 words, but it's feeling like it could be closer to between 3000-4000... so, yes, taking a while, but hopefully it'll be pretty juicy when it finally arrives. Anyways, a taster:

The voice of the raven had now stopped, its echo with it. The creaking rasp of its wings sounded then, close to her window, as it began to circle, looking down, drawn it would seem towards the only moving creature that shared its portion of the morning. It circled once more, the blackest of black birds, darkened still further by the snow massed beneath it. Whatever it was that the raven had spotted, it was indistinguishable from that stark whiteness. Some silent stalker, shifter of the morning. The click of old bones and low groan of a waking body caused Alayne to at last turn away from her silent vigil; neck a little stiff from standing in one attitude for so long, her long chestnut hair unbound.

First of all thank you! It’s amazing to know how much you appreciate my stories (Jonsa, darkJonsa and Firesteel).

Tbh I’ve been working on-and-off on next chapter of Like Wolves in the Darkness lately though I’m having some issue with the new POV, next chapter will be a double POV chapter and the first POV of it will be new and I want to make it plausible, accorded to the story but also canon which is giving me some issue, though I am halfway through that, so expect some good news on it soon!

I am kind of outlining next chapter of Soulbonded as well, and of Don’t go in the Forest, but it’s a slow process because both are very intense to write (especially Soulbonded since I added so much lore and basically wrote myself in a corner which means I have to be twice as mindful of all the lore I added in the coming chapters for future chapters reasons ™️).

The time of wolves new chapter is under review, btw, so yep… at one point I should be able to update that too.

I’ve also had the draft of coming chapter of the Chanson du sun’s son and his queen wolf and I actually have mapped and half written all the coming chapters of Wind of Ice, thought as they’re not Jonsa stories you had no asked after them — sorry to use this reply this way but I guess it kind of has become an update on how I am doing on my fics — hope you don’t mind.

I've added a few more to my AO3 bookmarks since then!

(Disclaimer: These reflect not a commentary on popularity or overall quality. I only bookmark those for rereading that fit my extremely specific tastes, the fandom has MUCH more to offer.)

I'm leaving out anything that veers too far off book canon, regardless of how good it may be, so while many of these are AUs to some extend, they won't be modern or regency or anything like that.

for the wars by ganymede_elegy (@cellsshapedlikestars) is a bookverse AU that veers of canon early and well. Jon doesn't join the Watch - and he is not Rhaegar's son, either. An excellent exploration of the Stark family dynamics in the time of war, both bitter and genuinely sweet.

My Maid of Stone is a WIP by @undercovercaptain is a bookverse "Jon goes to the Vale" AU, and already the first chapter is delightful. Come for the premise, stay for the sheer beauty of imagery and language.

Dance by @esther-dot is a short and very sweet pre-parentage reveal moment. <3

he flies by his own wings by TrishTan (@notbloodraven) is a WIP and actually an extremely different "Rhaegar won" AU, with a dark Targ bastard Jon, but it's definitely bookverse flavored and it's just all around excellent, hilarious and absolutely unique, so.. you know, enjoy!

Worth The Keeping by @undercovercaptain - the sequel to Beneath my Bones - is a lovely post-parentage reveal exploration. Romance, atmospheric nature descriptions, angst with a soft reward (to quote the author's approach to jonsa) - what more can you want?

Willowy Creature by @esther-dot is a lovely short post-canon happy ending moment. <3

What We Want by @justadram is a lovely jonsa fic from way back in 2013, both dark in its exploration and sweet in its execution. Set in the Vale.

This is the only one on the list that has a title that is likely to change and it is also the fic that has technically been a WIP the longest. I have had this idea for years, basically since I first started writing for jonsa, and it is all inspired by this post.

I have been interested in writing a Jonsa Lord of the Rings AU, or at least LOTR adjacent, just for the elf!Sansa and dwarf!Jon of it all. This isn't going to be some long sprawling tale or anything, it would just be a one off but it definitely is out of my comfort zone and I've put it off so long because I want to get it right!

This is one I have only just started working on but it's definitely going to be a challenging one. Also for the @jonsa-halloween event but for the prompt 'Dragon'.

Without giving too much away I am essentially looking to write an AU where the Targaryens have been an established dynasty for much longer than they ever were in canon, still fantasy still ASOIAF similar but with some changes. The Targaryens are falling out of favour and the realm is in a state of unrest. Jon is raised as a Targaryen and Sansa is alone in the world after a failed Northern Rebellion.

The challenge here is that I am really going to play with Sansa's character in a way I haven't before, she will still not be say 'Arya-esque' in that she is not going to be picking up a sword, but she is going to be forced into situations outside of her normal realm of strengths and will have to navigate that.

This is the last one I'm going to talk about and it is another one I'm super hype for, and again for the @jonsa-halloween event, prompt being 'Magic'.

Our jumping off point is Sansa, unaware of what she's doing, wargs into Lady before Ned can kill her and her direwolf journeys North while she goes to King's Landing like she does in canon. Mostly I'm super intrigued by diving into the warging aspect since it's not something I've really explored in depth before.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try to. I used to do it on all fics, but as discussed above, I'm a wordy bitch and at points responding to all comments on, for example, one shot event fics that I would post back-to-back got overwhelming. So I allowed myself to stop responding to comments on one shots. Recently I had quite the mental health dip and didn't respond to any for a while, but I think I'm back.

Part of the reason I like fandom is the sense of community. I started responding to comments on my first fic because I hadn't resurrected my tumblr from the grave yet, so it was the only way to interact with the fandom. Then I continued to because I appreciated the comments, even if they were simple and I had nothing else to say except thank you. I still try to on chaptered fics because, let's face it, without comments and without community, I wouldn't be posting my stories.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

probably my WWI one-shot

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I try to write at least *hopeful* endings for all my fics. I don't know if I can quantify "happiest", because I think that's different for everyone.

of course. I feel like it's a rite of passage on ao3 to get some shitty hate comments

I think the only people I've let pre-read anything are @hilarychuff (who is my brainstorm buddy) and @greenhikingboots (who is the reason the last chapter of the ghost inside made any coherent sense)

I'm very fast at it lmao. Like, seriously. I type very fast. I'm also somehow really good at starting a fic off with only an inciting incident, no other real plans, and somehow coming up with a full plot/ending that I'm satisfied with, while posting it as I develop the story

hmmm that depends on what the criteria is. First fandom I wrote for was Sailor Moon, I just never posted it anywhere. Harry Potter was technically the first fandom I posted for, but it was one chapter and I never continued it and I genuinely can't even remember what it was called, all I remember is Harry melted Voldemort with a bucket of soapy water like in the Enchanted Forest Chronicles.

The first fandom I was actually active in and wrote more than just a chapter was... A secret. I'm actually a little embarrassed about it and my fics are still floating around out there and some of them make me cringe sooooo hard. I don't think I've ever admitted to it here on tumblr dot com and I don't think I will now

Thanks for the ask and I'm sorry to say I have no good news to share. I have had a rough year and haven't been writing much. I'd like to wrap up Nothing Sacred in some kind of satisfying way but I've backed myself into a corner by making it much more plot heavy than I originally intended and I'm just not in a space to write myself out of it currently.

As for Shock You, I don't have any immediate plans but I could definitely see myself adding onto it. I'm pretty sure I know what I want to write for the next chapter and I've been thinking about it more recently as I've spent a lot of time in Chicago this summer, so maybe...but no promises.

I wish I was writing more and updating my stories, but it just hasn't been in the cards for me this year.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Currently (and I suspect forevermore): House of the Dragon. Previously: Harry Potter (back before JKR was a massive cunt).

Yes, I do! I like to thank people for reading, plus it satisfies my odd-number issue (they make me weirdly uncomfy). When people take time out of their day to leave me a message, I want to make sure I'm recognising that and letting them know that I appreciate it.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Yikes. I think it's the Harry Potter one, where I have Harry and Hermione marry and have a kid during the war, and they both die in the Final Battle and Ron ends up taking the kid to visit their grave.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I think that pretty much all my terms of endearment fics have happy endings - or near enough for ASOIAF-verse!

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Weirdly enough, no. I'd resigned myself to it given the themes and content, but people are weirdly accepting of it. I sometimes get strange comments (like someone who keeps insisting I make Daemon cheat with Rhaenyra), but they aren't hate, just... odd.

9. Do you write smut?

Yes. Feels like that should be overemphasised, haha. My writing is diiiiiirty.

10. Craziest crossover?

I haven't written any crossovers! If I were to do so, I'd probably do a 'Daenerys teleports back in time to House of the Dragon and gets with Daemon and Rhaenyra'. Hot.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Three damn times, lol, all from the same fic series (ToE). Once in May of last year, where someone stole my work and only changed the names to fit the Shadow and Bone fandom. Once again in June of last year, where someone plagiarised multiple ways and multiple times to write their fic (a whole other drama, yikes). And once in May of this year, where someone stole the entire first part of one of my chapters to write their Daemon x OC fic on Wattpad. All have been removed, because I'm not down with plagiarism at all.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I think so? I cannot remember for the life of me. I know I've been asked, and I gave my approval, but I haven't seen the translations myself so no idea if that ever went ahead.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! But it hasn't been published. We call it 'the Socussy fic' because it involves an unnamed female OC being hired by the Blacks to off the Greens during the Dance, only she does so by banging them to death in hilariously macabre ways. I wrote the establishing part featuring Daemon hiring her and the Larys footfuck death. We're missing one final bit, I think? It started in the big HotD Discord server I run, and @bottlesandbarricades @targaryenrealnessdarling and @ewanmitchellcrumbs have all collaborated on it. We're waiting for a final victim to contribute and then we shall convene as the Socussy Council and bestow the posting of it upon one poor soul! (I vote you Rach @bottlesandbarricades)

14. All time favourite ship?

I'm a die-hard Daemyra (Daemon Targaryen x Rhaenyra Targaryen) fan, but I also recognise that this is likely going to fracture and perish as the series progresses. I'm also hella into Jonsa (Jon Snow x Sansa Stark) and Jonerys (Jon Snow x Daenerys Targaryen). Plus, I like Jaimsa (Jaime Lannister x Sansa Stark) and Sanseryn (Sansa Stark x Oberyn Martell). I don't really know what this all says about me as a person, both the pairings themselves AND the fact they're all ASOIAF ships.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I have an Aemond WIP fic that I'm too scared to finish given Aemond stans are a little intimidating to me! Also, I have a Klaus Mikaelson x OC/Reader x Elijah Mikaelson threesome fic that lingers in my files.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I like to think my strengths are my flowery prose, my relative era-accurate world-building and my characterisation.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I ramble way the fuck too much. Seriously, shut up, Em. Explain those three paragraphs in one goddamn sentence only.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

I think it's cool! I've made sure to research how one would format the inclusion of this in a standard fiction novel, too, so that it reads as 'professionally' as it can be. I manually translate High Valyrian to include in my writing, because the translators aren't at all accurate and I don't want to break the immersion (even for myself). (As an aside, I can and do assist others in this too - hit me up if you need it!)

19. First fandom you wrote in?

Blegh. Harry Potter. Don't shoot me, I was a child.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

My series terms of endearment. If I have to choose within the series, probably ñuhus prūmȳs (my heart); it's the first proper divergence from show material featuring my own plot, and I think it's where my writing truly takes form.

Always, but it takes me time. I used to be very secluded, still am sometimes, and it took me effort to reply to comments and build relationships and community. I don't want to lose that. It's also important to me that readers understand how meaningful even a single comment is. So yeah, every comment, I try.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Alright, so there's a lot of contenders for this one. I'm not even gonna try to list them off.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Probably either Interlocking or What Grows in Winter? I don't write a lot of 'happy' endings, I would say. Mostly I write endings that have either hope or closure, and that can come in a multitude of emotions, but those two fics are probably the most light-hearted of my works so I'm going with that.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Sure, but honestly, not nearly as much as I expected. I've never really gotten someone trying to get into an argument with me. It's really just those one-line trolls that mass comment on a fic out of nowhere with stuff like 'Die parasite' or whatever.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do! I can actually say that now, lol. It's semi-recent for me, I guess. Considering how long I've been writing, at least. At the moment it's just het smut, but who knows what the future will bring!

Nope. Dislike crossovers, actually.

I honestly can't answer this. Like... honestly. But the two couples I've spent the most time actively writing for would be Jon/Sansa (Game of Thrones/ASOIAF) and Storm/Wolverine.(X-Men), so there's that.

It'd be between Rocks and Shoals and Sheparding Men, but I'm more hopeful that I'd return to Rocks and Shoals. Both are Mass Effect fic.

Characterization and emotive language.

Setting and exposition, for sure. Also, paring down a scene, lol.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I've thrown in a commonly known phrase or two, but I don't like it being used regularly. There's too much variance on how to show translation in fic, and I find it often breaks the pace of the piece trying to do so, anyway.

Oh geez, thinking back, probably Xena? Though that was unpublished. First published fandom would be X-Men.

20. Favorite fic you've written?

Damn, that's hard. But I'm probably going to have to go with Reckoned from One Midnight to the Next for the way it changed my writing style going forward. Perhaps the most formative of my pieces. Close runner up would be A Violence Done Most Kindly though, since it's also pretty formative for me in how I tackle plot now, and I'm really proud of the intricacies in that one.
