In 1992, civilians were living on the moon. Psi based powers were common. People who were able to block telepathic powers were important in business to prevent industrial espionage. When people died they were able to continue on in a cryonic state known as “half-life”. (“Ubik” Bk)

The crisp autumn air filled my lungs as I stepped out of the unmarked car, the scene before me bathed in the eerie glow of flashing police lights. Yellow tape cordoned off the area, marking it as a crime scene. As I approached, the faint scent of blood mingled with the scent of damp earth, a grim reminder of the violence that had unfolded here.
My gaze swept over the scene, taking in the chaos of scattered evidence markers and the hushed whispers of forensic technicians. A knot formed in my stomach as I knelt beside the lifeless body, the victim's eyes frozen in a silent scream, their expression a haunting echo of the horror they must have endured.
The puzzle stretched out before me, a labyrinth of clues and half-truths waiting to be unraveled. I knew that behind every shattered life lay a story waiting to be told, and it was my job to piece together the fragments of evidence until the truth emerged from the shadows.
As I surveyed the scene, a single thought echoed in my mind: In a world stained with darkness, it was my duty to seek out the light, no matter how faint it may seem.
The moon hung low in the sky, casting long shadows that danced across the crime scene. My partner, Detective Miller, approached, his footsteps echoing in the silence.
"What do we have, Agent?" he asked, his voice low.
I rose to my feet, my mind already racing with possibilities. "Looks like a professional job," I replied, gesturing to the neat arrangement of evidence. "No signs of struggle, no witnesses. It's like they vanished into thin air."
Miller nodded, his brow furrowed in concentration. "Any leads?"
I shook my head, frustration gnawing at the edges of my mind. "Not yet. But we'll find something. We always do."
Together, we began to comb through the scene, each piece of evidence a thread in the intricate tapestry of the investigation. As the hours stretched on, the night seemed to grow darker, the weight of the unsolved mystery pressing down on my shoulders like a leaden cloak.
But I refused to give in to despair. I had seen the worst that humanity had to offer, and yet still, I believed in the power of justice to prevail.
And so, as the first light of dawn began to creep over the horizon, I made a silent vow to the victim lying cold and lifeless before me: We would find the truth, no matter the cost.
---------
The family dinner meetings with the Chevaliers was quite a different kind of game. Alexandre was back in the family but instead Romain left. It wasn't an upgrade but it wasn't a downgrade either. You didn't want to be here, neither did Matthew.
The two of you had put time aside to talk but marvelously his father calls you into a family meeting before you could get any say.
"Where is dad and that whore!" Joris exclaims as you shake your head in disappointment but also since you feel lightheaded. You've been feeling off recently.
"Joris, stop. Your father respects her that's all that matters," you say out of frustration that he blames and calls the other woman wrong things. You lean against the railing as Joris screams at you. "Whose side are you on Y/N?!? Pull yourself together!" You don't even flinch but what's worse is that Matthew doesn't even stand up for you or defend you but instead his brother Alexandre tells Joris to control himself.
What is truly going on.
--------
Today was a day that nobody in the mission force and organisation wanted to experience. The day that a worker is killed. These days every single accomplishment feels useless, especially when a person is a fellow teammate.
Jake was….well devastated. Having a dagger get killed in the streets is something that never should have happened. Jake was close with the squad and so where you but this is something that affected him more.
"I'm sorry babe," you say sitting beside him, wrapping your arms around him, pulling Jake in close as he sat on the couch for ages just staring at his feet. You kissed the top of his head as he leaned into your chest and you wrapped around him more.
"Why Bob though, why in such a way." You didn't know how to answer that question. Bob's body was found cold dead this very early morning in the bin containers outside his house. His neck was twisted, which must have caused the death.
You were on the night shift last night so when they called you to check it out if it was him you wanted to throw up. His skin is all purple and glasses smashed. He had two big prints on two sides of his head. It was a disgusting sight to see.
He must have been drugged. From behind they believe. The person must have snuck up on him the previous night as he was throwing out some trash and treated him like some. After being drugged they could have done anything to him but it seems that the death occurred while being awake so he was on drugs and still awake before his neck got snapped.
"It's ok. Just a little longer, ok? Then this will all be ok." Your small words of encouragement meant a whole big wave of reality to woosh over Jake. Just a few more days until everything will be ok.
You knew that Jake needed this. He needed a sense of that everything will be okay and that he won't be alone. He needed to have the sense that his family will never leave him alone. His family is you and Kai.
------
You were at the base today with only Phoenix and Rooster. Jake took the day off and anyways someone needed to take care of Kai after all. Phoenix looked wrecked, she had just lost her partner and closest friend.
Bradley didn't look any better. Hair messed up and no cocky smile was on his face. You looked at the two of them in pity. You didn't know bob well but you could tell that people cared about him and his death will be something that won't go past without a second thought.
"It doesn't make sense," Phoenix lets out, breaking the overwhelming silence and you look at her to see what her point was. Bradley began to look at her now but you didn't look, you inspected. You weren't sure what this was about but hopefully it was what you meant.
"Bob was looking into one of Justin's cases and boom, dead. And it is his style of murdering!" Phoenix may be on a track here. Bob recently started pulling out files to do with Justin and now magically he's dead. That's wrong.
Justin was a mad man and was trained to be an agent but when an agent became a murder of another that is one thing that'll never be forgiven.
Phoenix had a plan and it could actually work. If the three of you got up and stood in Justin's way, he'd pay for the pain and misery he brought upon agent Floyd.
"Accusing is a one way gate to hell, Phoenix," you warn her as the three of you enter the fight area where a case just has begun to be carried out. She looks at you in doubt but simply nods. Your opinions were tolerance. They were purity and adapted by everyone and she knows that you've been in severe cases so it is better to trust you word to word.
------
"So you want them all gone?" You ask Olivia as she goes through all her plans with you. She trusted you and you respect that but she wants all the Chevaliers gone, things you learned today were horrid.
Olivia knows the Chevaliers because of the accident that happened ten years ago. The Fortuny family were….not so fortunate. Firstly, father drowned and his body washed back to shore and then his wife and two kids. The mother and two kids were killed in a car accident. The car was pushed off the cliff road and burned that way, it was done with purpose.
It was not an accident.
The only one who made it out with life was the daughter Emma. She managed to survive the car explosion. She was also Alexandre's girlfriend back then but the incident was one of the reasons he left the family.
She died in the hospital a week later.
But that was all a lie. She didn't die. You didn't know much about this case because ten years back you were just a fifteen year old girl living back in America with Tom and Sarah, so french incidents didn't even reach you.
Emma didn't die that week though. The incident never killed her. She was sitting right in front of you. She wanted revenge as well. Olivia is Emma.
-------
You're running, the case escalated instantly. You didn't know how to get out or how to run from this but it was getting serious. You had only seconds to get out of her and survive. You grab your gun from your left hand slot in your belt and you point it at an angle once you sprint. You had to know every way of possible consequences. You needed out.
The antagonist that the three of you were meant to confront ran for it but had a load of artillery on him making him more dangerous than possible. You sprint and see him. He doesn't see you, that's the magic of this situation. You could pull any string, play any game but the one that comes out of this is you.
All you had to do is point your gun directly at that silhouette of the figure, all you had to do is pull the trigger. All you had to do was shoot.
You pull the trigger.
You never did it so fast in your life. Your bones trembled in fear. You had to get back to your squadron. You couldn't even check the body, you had to get back, being out in the open with no bulletproof jacket or proper protective gear risked your life.
You turn left, left and then right. It was like a maze but it had to be completed. You weave your way back and soon start to realise the familiar landmarks as previously. You don't know what it is but something like this scares you.
Missions like your previous one that you and Jake did together did not bother you but this one scared the sack out of you. You never knew what it was but it always trembled in your veins.
You finally see the squad and see Bradley standing there, he looks pale, as if his life was crushed. You take your gun out of the right pocket and walk over to the gear technician that takes your weapon off you and counts the left bullets.
With slow easy steps you make your way to Bradley's side to notice him crying. You had no clue what had just occurred. You never seen the grown man cry and out of instinct you wrap your arms around him as a comfort mechanism.
"They shot her, Cobra. She's gone too." He whispers that in between sons on your shoulder. It takes you a good second to figure out the situation but you finally understand.
Phoenix got shot to death.

Gaslight podcast

The characters are cool and the story has a lot of potential but this is unfinished and at best a rough draft. Gaslight: With Chlo Grace Moretz, Kelsey Asbille, Taran Killam, John Gallagher Jr. Written and directed by Miles Joris-Peyrafitte. Gaslight, the upcoming television adaptation of QCODE’s hit podcast, has cast its leads.Happy Death Day’s Jessica Rothe will star as Danny, a woman who mysteriously vanishes at the end of high. Tonight August 6 at 7:30pm ET you can watch live as the film Mr. Another example: Danny obviously chose to go to the bedroom bc she knew the monitor was there but again for no apparent reason as nothing came of it and no important information was shared. GASLIGHT picks up years later when Becca and her new husband receive a visitor during breakfast. When fourteen-year-old Jesse Pomeroy was arrested in 1874 for the murder of Horace Millen, he was thought to have tortured at least six children and tortured and murdered two more. But it was not a call containing earth shattering information, in fact the call seemed pretty pointless and it felt like the writers wanted it to be a bigger deal than it actually was. Let's uncover and learn more about these intriguing topics. One episode is a repeat of an earlier episode with a 5 minute phone call inserted that was not heard in the previous episode. The Gaslight podcast features peculiar themes, the occult, phenomena and everything fascinating in between. First of all when I saw it consisted of 10 episodes at 10-15 min each (there are a couple that are 12 minutes, including the ads at the beginning) I had doubts that it would be able to be a complete story.

THEON MONTH 2022 || Day 22: Ghosts and Dreams
That night he dreamed of the feast Ned Stark had thrown when King Robert came to Winterfell. The hall rang with music and laughter, though the cold winds were rising outside. At first it was all wine and roast meat, and Theon was making japes and eyeing the serving girls and having himself a fine time . . . until he noticed that the room was growing darker. The music did not seem so jolly then; he heard discords and strange silences, and notes that hung in the air bleeding. Suddenly the wine turned bitter in his mouth, and when he looked up from his cup he saw that he was dining with the dead.
King Robert sat with his guts spilling out on the table from the great gash in his belly, and Lord Eddard was headless beside him. Corpses lined the benches below, grey-brown flesh sloughing off their bones as they raised their cups to toast, worms crawling in and out of the holes that were their eyes. He knew them, every one; Jory Cassel and Fat Tom, Porther and Cayn and Hullen the master of horse, and all the others who had ridden south to King's Landing never to return. Mikken and Chayle sat together, one dripping blood and the other water. Benfred Tallhart and his Wild Hares filled most of a table. The miller's wife was there as well, and Farlen, even the wildling Theon had killed in the wolfswood the day he had saved Bran's life.
But there were others with faces he had never known in life, faces he had seen only in stone. The slim, sad girl who wore a crown of pale blue roses and a white gown spattered with gore could only be Lyanna. Her brother Brandon stood beside her, and their father Lord Rickard just behind. Along the walls figures half-seen moved through the shadows, pale shades with long grim faces. The sight of them sent fear shivering through Theon sharp as a knife. And then the tall doors opened with a crash, and a freezing gale blew down the hall, and Robb came walking out of the night. Grey Wind stalked beside, eyes burning, and man and wolf alike bled from half a hundred savage wounds.

Jon & Theon parallels
This isn't comprehensive but I wanted to do a post on moments of convergence between Jon & his literary foil Theon. Their place of origin in the series is the same: outcasts in Winterfell. Jon has love from his family, but no title. Theon has a title, but no true family. In opposing order they both undergo a ruling arc (Theon in ACOK, Jon in ASOS/ADWD) and one in which they have to assume another identity in order to survive (Reek, Jon in Mance's camp). In ADWD, both of them encounter a false Arya and deal with themes of ruin/resurrection.
Jon & Theon's relationship to each other isn't friendship, although they both seem able to recognize themselves through the other.
He had never truly been a Stark, only Lord Eddard's motherless bastard, with no more place at Winterfell than Theon Greyjoy.
-ASOS, Jon III
As if ten years in Winterfell could make a Stark. Lord Eddard had raised him among his own children, but Theon had never been one of them. The whole castle, from Lady Stark to the lowliest kitchen scullion, knew he was hostage to his father's good behavior, and treated him accordingly. Even the bastard Jon Snow had been accorded more honor than he had.
-ACOK, Theon I
WINTERFELL DREAMS
I've talked about this before but Theon & Jon experience complementary dreams of Winterfell. They're two halves of the same: Theon in the feast hall, with the risen dead. Jon in the crypts below, with the rising dead. In each case, they're the only person alive. Theon's is touched by guilt because many of those seated are people he killed/had killed. Jon's is recurring and seizes on his feelings of not belonging.
Up above he heard drums. They are feasting in the Great Hall, but I am not welcome there. I am no Stark, and this is not my place.
-AGOT, Jon VII
Last night he had dreamed the Winterfell dream again. He was wandering the empty castle, searching for his father, descending into the crypts. Only this time the dream had gone further than before. In the dark he’d heard the scrape of stone on stone. When he turned he saw that the vaults were opening, one after the other. As the dead kings came stumbling from their cold black graves, Jon had woken in pitch-dark, his heart hammering.
-ASOS, Jon VIII
King Robert sat with his guts spilling out on the table from the great gash in his belly, and Lord Eddard was headless beside him. Corpses lined the benches below, grey-brown flesh sloughing off their bones as they raised their cups to toast, worms crawling in and out of the holes that were their eyes. He knew them, every one; Jory Cassel and Fat Tom, Porther and Cayn and Hullen the master of horse, and all the others who had ridden south to King’s Landing never to return. Mikken and Chayle sat together, one dripping blood and the other water. Benfred Tallhart and his Wild Hares filled most of a table. The miller’s wife was there as well, and Farlen, even the wildling Theon had killed in the wolfswood the day he had saved Bran’s life.
-ACOK, Theon V
UNLIKELY MENTOR FIGURE
"Some great lord was he, this Donal Noye? One of your shiny knights in their steel smallclothes?"
"A blacksmith. He only had one arm."
-ASOS, Jon X
Dagmer grinned more often and more broadly than Lord Balon ever had.
Ugly as it was, that smile brought back a hundred memories. Theon had seen it often as a boy, when he'd jumped a horse over a mossy wall, or flung an axe and split a target square. He'd seen it when he blocked a blow from Dagmer's sword, when he put an arrow through a seagull on the wing, when he took the tiller in hand and guided a longship safely through a snarl of foaming rocks. He gave me more smiles than my father and Eddard Stark together. [...]"You and I must talk, Uncle," Theon said. Dagmer was no true uncle, only a sworn man with perhaps a pinch of Greyjoy blood four or five lives back, and that from the wrong side of the blanket. Yet Theon had always called him uncle nonetheless.
-ACOK, Theon III
I HAD TO PROVE MYSELF
"I've told you the truth. Our garrons were failing, and Rattleshirt was close behind us. Qhorin told me to pretend to join the wildlings. 'You must not balk, whatever is asked of you,' he said. He knew they would make me kill him. Rattleshirt was going to kill him anyway, he knew that too."
-ASOS, Jon IX
Iron Emmett pulled his battered helm off. "Was there some part of yield you could not comprehend, Lord Snow?" It was said amiably, though. Emmett was an amiable man, and he loved the song of swords. "Warrior defend me," he groaned, "now I know how Qhorin Halfhand must have felt."
That was too much. Jon wrenched free of his friends and retreated to the armory, alone.
-ASOS, Jon XII
Ned Stark's sons are all dead, Reek thought. Robb was murdered at the Twins, and Bran and Rickon… we dipped the heads in tar… His own head was pounding. He did not want to think about anything that had happened before he knew his name. There were things too hurtful to remember, thoughts almost as painful as Ramsay's flaying knife…
-ADWD, Reek III
It was not Bran we killed. It was not Rickon. They were only miller's sons, from the mill by the Acorn Water. "I had to have two heads, else they would have mocked me… laughed at me… they…"
-ADWD, A Ghost in Winterfell
RULERS HAVE THEIR WAYS
This is a foil, but interesting to me because while Jon does "the right thing" by making Melisandre come to him, he doesn't heed her advice and ultimately gets stabbed just like she told him he would be. Theon also doesn't take Asha's advice and remains in Winterfell + gets captured + L + ratio etc etc.
Melisandre had seen his danger before, had tried to warn the boy of it. Enemies all around him, daggers in the dark. He would not listen. [...]
The boy was not entirely naive, however. He knew better than to come to Melisandre's chambers like a supplicant, insisting she come to him instead should she have need of words with him. And oft as not, when she did come, he would keep her waiting or refuse to see her. That much, at least, was shrewd.
-ADWD, Melisandre I
"Come, let us go somewhere we can speak more privily."
She was right, he knew, though it galled him that she would make that decision. I should never have come to the hall, he realized belatedly. I should have summoned her to me. [...]
Theon adjusted his crown. "I took this castle and I mean to hold it."
His sister looked at him a long time. "Then hold it you shall," she said, "for the rest of your life."
-ACOK, Theon V
THE CLOTHES MAKE THE MAN
Jon's breath misted the air. If I lie to him, he'll know. He looked Mance Rayder in the eyes, opened and closed his burned hand. "I wear the [sheepskin] cloak you gave me, Your Grace."
-ASOS, Jon II
When they saw who the Watch had sent, Harma turned her head and spat, and one of Varamyr's wolves bared its teeth and growled. "You must be very brave or very stupid, Jon Snow," Mance Rayder said, "to come back to us wearing a black cloak."
"What else would a man of the Night's Watch wear?"
-ASOS, Jon IX
"A bath?" Reek felt a clenching in his guts. "I… I would sooner not, m'lord. Please. I have… wounds, I… and these clothes, Lord Ramsay gave them to me, he… he said that I was never to take them off, save at his command…"
"You are wearing rags," Lord Bolton said, quite patiently. "Filthy things, torn and stained and stinking of blood and urine. And thin. You must be cold. We'll put you in lambswool, soft and warm. Perhaps a fur-lined cloak. Would you like that?"
"No." He could not let them take the clothes Lord Ramsay gave him. He could not let them see him.
-ADWD, Reek III
They are using me to cloak their deception, putting mine own face on their lie. That was why Roose Bolton had clothed him as a lord again, to play his part in this mummer's farce. Once that was done, once their false Arya had been wedded and bedded, Bolton would have no more use for Theon Turncloak.
-ADWD, The Prince of Winterfell
SHE HAUNTS ME
Jon wondered where Ghost was now. Had he gone to Castle Black, or was he was running with some wolfpack in the woods? He had no sense of the direwolf, not even in his dreams. It made him feel as if part of himself had been cut off. Even with Ygritte sleeping beside him, he felt alone. He did not want to die alone.
-ASOS, Jon V
You know nothing, Jon Snow, Ygritte used to say, but he had learned.
-ADWD, Jon I
Kyra nestled against him, one arm draped lightly over his, her breasts brushing his back. He could hear her breathing, soft and steady. The sheet was tangled about them. It was the black of night. The bedchamber was dark and still. [...] All's well, Greyjoy. Hear the quiet? You ought to be drunk with joy. You took Winterfell with fewer than thirty men, a feat to sing of. Theon started back to bed. He'd roll Kyra on her back and fuck her again, that ought to banish these phantoms. Her gasps and giggles would make a welcome respite from this silence.
He stopped. He had grown so used to the howling of the direwolves that he scarcely heard it anymore. . . but some part of him, some hunter's instinct, heard its absence.
-ACOK, Theon IV
Last night, unable to sleep, Theon had found himself brooding on escape, of slipping away unseen whilst Ramsay and his lord father had their attention elsewhere. Every gate was closed and barred and heavily guarded, though; no one was allowed to enter or depart the castle without Lord Bolton's leave. Even if he found some secret way out, Theon would not have trusted it. He had not forgotten Kyra and her keys.
-ADWD, The Turncloak
Point of note that both Theon & Jon have their sleep/peace disturbed by the absence of a direwolf.
I don't want to simplify this to Jon's feelings towards Ygritte = Theon's feelings towards Kyra, nor are they inversed. They're not the same situation, and ultimately Theon does rape Kyra. She turns to him in the Dreadfort because she feels she has no other choice, and in their escape attempt Theon is quick to suggest they split. Of course doing that would have raised her chances of survival from 0% to 50% but she wasn't in the mental space to be able to do that. She's isn't a warrior while Ygritte is, isn't prepared for death the way Ygritte claims to be.
But Kyra put her trust in Theon, and he hurt her in Winterfell/was unable to save her running from Ramsay. The latter wasn't his fault but it is what haunts Theon, to the point that it discourages his own escape fantasies. Ygritte similarly trusted Jon as a turncloak in his own right, saves his life, and dies in his arms because he was able to warn the Watch of the Thenns coming.
Jon thinks of her often afterwards. He learns. Which leads me to this:
FALSE ARYA STARK
Alys knelt before him, clutching the black cloak. "You are my only hope, Lord Snow. In your father's name, I beg you. Protect me."
-ADWD, Jon IX
"Help me." She clutched at him. "Please. I used to watch you in the yard, playing with your swords. You were so handsome." She squeezed his arm. "If we ran away, I could be your wife, or your… your whore… whatever you wanted. You could be my man."
-ADWD, The Prince in Winterfell
Both Jon & Theon oversee two snowy weddings in ADWD, one happy-ish and one miserable. They give away the respective brides and with that gesture, help to consolidate Northern power (Alys over Karhold & Roose/Ramsay over Winterfell). Both of them do end up saving Alys & Jeyne respectively, although Theon only later and at much more risk of harm than Jon. Once again, they're the same yet opposite - Jon helps Alys by making her a marriage with an enemy of the Starks (free folk), allowing her to step into her true rights. Theon helps Jeyne by rescuing her from a marriage with an enemy of the Starks (House Bolton), relying on her false identity to do so. Both of them cause a blow to the Lannister agenda in the North. And both of them are completely unaware of the other.
This is the sort of storytelling I enjoy for several reasons, but mainly that last part. Theon & Jon often run in tandem but they are so disconnected from each other/in such different contexts that their parallels still offer completely unique insights. Theon and Jon could exist without each other but juxtaposed together they add another layer.
63 LIVES IN THE BALANCE
"The choice is yours," Jon Snow told them. "Those who want to help us hold the Wall, return to Castle Black with me and I'll see you armed and fed. The rest of you, get your turnips and your onions and crawl back inside your holes."[...] By the time the last withered apple had been handed out, the wagons were crowded with wildlings, and they were sixty-three stronger than when the column had set out from Castle Black that morning.
-ADWD, Jon V
He is drunk, Reek realized. The ale is speaking. "Believe what you want. I have brought Lord Ramsay's message. Now I must return to him. We'll sup on wild boar and neeps, washed down with strong red wine. Those who come with me will be welcome at the feast. The rest of you will die within a day."
[...] Along the rotting-plank road, wooden stakes were driven deep into the boggy ground; there the corpses festered, red and dripping. Sixty-three, he knew, there are sixty-three of them. One was short half an arm. Another had a parchment shoved between its teeth, its wax seal still unbroken.
-ADWD, Reek II
Basically Theon and Jon both threaten starvation against the wildlings & the ironborn in Moat Cailin respectively, offering safety to those who join them instead. Jon does this for the purpose of manning the Wall; Theon does this to open the Neck for Ramsay. The same yet opposite.
THE TREES KNOW ME
A weirwood.
It seemed to sprout from solid rock, its pale roots twisting up from a myriad of fissures and hairline cracks. The tree was slender compared to other weirwoods he had seen, no more than a sapling, yet it was growing as he watched, its limbs thickening as they reached for the sky. Wary, he circled the smooth white trunk until he came to the face. Red eyes looked at him. Fierce eyes they were, yet glad to see him. The weirwood had his brother's face. Had his brother always had three eyes?
[...]He sniffed at the bark, smelled wolf and tree and boy, but behind that there were other scents, the rich brown smell of warm earth and the hard grey smell of stone and something else, something terrible. Death, he knew. He was smelling death. He cringed back, his hair bristling, and bared his fangs.
-ACOK, Jon VII
The old gods, he thought. They know me. They know my name. I was Theon of House Greyjoy. I was a ward of Eddard Stark, a friend and brother to his children. "Please." He fell to his knees. "A sword, that's all I ask. Let me die as Theon, not as Reek." Tears trickled down his cheeks, impossibly warm. "I was ironborn. A son… a son of Pyke, of the islands."
A leaf drifted down from above, brushed his brow, and landed in the pool. It floated on the water, red, five-fingered, like a bloody hand. "…Bran," the tree murmured.
They know. The gods know. They saw what I did. And for one strange moment it seemed as if it were Bran's face carved into the pale trunk of the weirwood, staring down at him with eyes red and wise and sad. Bran's ghost, he thought, but that was madness. Why should Bran want to haunt him?
-ADWD, The Prince in Winterfell
In Jon's vision following the above quote, it is actually Bran speaking to him (Bran has an analogous dream) while he's in the crypts. Jon thinks he smells of death although the tree with his face on it is still growing. Alive yet dead, sort of like a ghost!
This intrigues me because arguably Arya is also contacted by Bran through the weirwoodnet in several places yet she doesn't have an experience like this. Bran isn't just reaching out to anyone he can, he chooses Jon & Theon specifically. Possibly.
DEAD MAN WALKING
The smells are stronger in my wolf dreams, he reflected, and food tastes richer too. Ghost is more alive than I am. He left the empty cup upon the forge.
-ADWD, Jon II
Theon wondered if he would ever see the Drowned God's watery halls, or if his ghost would linger here at Winterfell. Dead is dead. Better dead than Reek.
-ADWD, Theon I
It's funny because Jon actually will likely become Ghost for a time and Theon is immediately sentenced to death upon reclaiming his identity (you have to know your name).
...and finally:
THE SWORD OF DAMOCLES
Where their literary relationship really comes together is in the fact that they wind up embodying each other's dreams. Jon has always dreamed of being Lord of Winterfell, earning a name, of serving & saving Starks.
When Jon had been Bran's age, he had dreamed of doing great deeds, as boys always did. The details of his feats changed with every dreaming, but quite often he imagined saving his father's life. Afterward Lord Eddard would declare that Jon had proved himself a true Stark, and place Ice in his hand.
-AGOT, Jon VIII
"It is a dream for spring, though," Lord Eddard had said. "Even the promise of land will not lure men north with a winter coming on."
If winter had come and gone more quickly and spring had followed in its turn, I might have been chosen to hold one of these towers in my father's name. Lord Eddard was dead, however, his brother Benjen lost; the shield they dreamt together would never be forged.
-ASOS, Jon V
He wanted it, Jon knew then. He wanted it as much as he had ever wanted anything. I have always wanted it, he thought, guiltily. May the gods forgive me. It was a hunger inside him, sharp as a dragonglass blade.
-ASOS, Jon XII
Theon gets to fight in Robb's campaign. Theon is trusted with the message to Pyke. Theon carries his father's name and Theon is the briefly Prince of Winterfell in ACOK + has a chapter "The Prince of Winterfell" in ADWD. And what does that do for him? Nothing.
Meanwhile, Theon desires the love/respect of family. Theon imagines a future where he's Lord Commander when his back is against the Wall. In the ruins of Winterfell, Theon wishes to be and die ironborn.
I have black garb aplenty, once I tear the krakens off. Even my horse is black. I could rise high in the Watch—chief of rangers, likely even Lord Commander. Let Asha keep the bloody islands, they're as dreary as she is. If I served at Eastwatch, I could command my own ship, and there's fine hunting beyond the Wall. As for women, what wildling woman wouldn't want a prince in her bed? A slow smile crept across his face. A black cloak can't be turned. I'd be as good as any man. . .
-ACOK, Theon VI
He remembered a time when he had thought that Lord Eddard Stark might marry him to Sansa and claim him for a son, but that had only been a child's fancy.
-ADWD, Reek I
"A sword, that's all I ask. Let me die as Theon, not as Reek." Tears trickled down his cheeks, impossibly warm. "I was ironborn. A son… a son of Pyke, of the islands."
-ADWD, The Prince in Winterfell
It's Jon who rises to the high command. It's Jon whose family motivates him (compare Jon leaving the Watch for Arya to Theon's flimsy excuse of killing Bran & Rickon for Rodrik & Maron). And it's Jon who will be resurrected from death. And what sort of life is that?
Where am I going? What am I doing? Castle Black was still and silent, its halls and towers dark. My seat, Jon Snow reflected. My hall, my home, my command. A ruin.
-ADWD, Jon VI
Despite his bastard birth, or perhaps because of it, Jon Snow had dreamed of leading men to glory just as King Daeron had, of growing up to be a conqueror. Now he was a man grown and the Wall was his, yet all he had were doubts. He could not even seem to conquer those.
-ADWD, Jon VII
Equally incomplete.

Do you think Theon actually saw the ghosts of dead Starks? Or was it more like a message from Bran? I was a bit confused by that part.
Which bit?
That night he dreamed of the feast Ned Stark had thrown when King Robert came to Winterfell. [...] Suddenly the wine turned bitter in his mouth, and when he looked up from his cup he saw that he was dining with the dead.
- Theon V, ACoK
This one's half stress-induced nightmare, half inexplicably prophetic.
A son … a son of Pyke, of the islands."
A leaf drifted down from above, brushed his brow, and landed in the pool. It floated on the water, red, five-fingered, like a bloody hand. "… Bran," the tree murmured.
They know. The gods know. They saw what I did. And for one strange moment it seemed as if it were Bran's face carved into the pale trunk of the weirwood, staring down at him with eyes red and wise and sad. Bran's ghost, he thought, but that was madness. Why should Bran want to haunt him?
- A Ghost in Winterfell, ADWD
This one's almost certainly a supernatural encounter with Bran.

Ok I might be way out on a limb here but I was looking for other thoughts and perspectives. I’m recalling Theon and Jon sharing a dream of the “feast of the dead” in Winterfell. Theon recalls seeing many Starks there but also Robert Baratheon who is Ned’s friend and surrogate brother. Theon sees Lyanna there but not Rhegar. To me this is another hint that their “elopement” is more sinister. Jon hears the feast upstairs but is trapped in the crypts. Theon will die & join the feast Jon won’t.
(2) Jon can’t join the feast as he’ll be resurrected. Cat is also not at the feast as she too is somewhat resurrected. So maybe I’m totally tin foil here but as Jon limps through the old Kings I get a sense that yes it’s telling him he’s not Ned’s son but he’ll take his place among them as KitN but also earn his place at the feast. I also think the dire wolf who comes to him in the dark is Lady due to the wound across the neck. Like Sansa will lead Jon out of death. Maybe I’m crazy?
Hi there!
You’re definitely not crazy! Let’s have a look. I’ll bold the words I think are important!
(ACOK, Theon V)
So this is the feast of the dead. I am not entirely sure if Theon is meant to die judging from his vision. Because this is his last chapter in ACOK and he was supposedly dead for two books, and when he turns up again in ADWD, Theon is kind of dead. So, it might only mean his metaphorical death. I think there are allusions to the fight with the Others (cold winds etc.) and the Red Wedding (the dissonant music, and Robb joins the feast at the end). It is telling that the people Theon does not know are all Starks, so it stands to reason that the shadows with grim faces are the old Kings and Stark lords. And Rhaegar indeed has no place there, but Lyanna has who was buried in Winterfell.
And now to Jon’s corresponding dream:
He dreamt he was back in Winterfell, limping past the stone kings on their thrones. Their grey granite eyes turned to follow him as he passed, and their grey granite fingers tightened on the hilts of the rusted swords upon their laps. You are no Stark, he could hear them mutter, in heavy granite voices. There is no place for you here. Go away. He walked deeper into the darkness. "Father?" he called. "Bran? Rickon?" No one answered. A chill wind was blowing on his neck. "Uncle?" he called. "Uncle Benjen? Father? Please, Father, help me." Up above he heard drums. They are feasting in the Great Hall, but I am not welcome there. I am no Stark, and this is not my place. His crutch slipped and he fell to his knees. The crypts were growing darker. A light has gone out somewhere. "Ygritte?" he whispered. "Forgive me. Please." But it was only a direwolf, grey and ghastly, spotted with blood, his golden eyes shining sadly through the dark . . (ASOS, Jon VIII)
So, here we have an allusion to the fight with the Others and to the Red Wedding as well, like in Theon’s description. Like with Theon the light is diminishing.
And I think it’s easy enough to deduce that the feast of the dead is not for Jon. It is interesting, that the Kings are statues in Jon’s dream and shadows with grim faces in Theon’s dream, just as if their essence is with the feast of the dead upstairs and they are lifeless in the crypts. The mutters after all might come from upstairs.
So, whose direwolf is it? It can’t be Grey Wind who is upstairs with burning eyes. All the direwolves but Ghost have golden eyes, but it is not always mentioned. But in the moment of Lady’s death her golden eyes and grey fur are noticed by Eddard: She looked at him with bright golden eyes, and he ruffled her thick grey fur.     (AGOT, Eddard III)
And all the other direwolves still live.
And I think it is very likely that Sansa will sing Jon back into life, maybe for real, maybe only metaphorically because she might remind him of his humanity after he has spent too much time in Ghost.
And we know, that Sansa dreams of Lady, that their connection was damaged, but maybe it was not broken completely, because Lady somehow lives on in Sansa.
so, definitely not crazy. There is textual evidence for your theory!
Thanks for the ask!

Hi dear, do you have any good words on emotional courage?
hi my love, you can check out this post and this post; here are a few more:
“I know a lot about pain… and I know it is bad for people, eats away the spirit, but how about courage, what is it for if not to use when needed?”
Martha Gellhorn, Selected Letters
“This is in the end the only kind of courage that is required of us: the courage to face the strangest, most unusual, most inexplicable experiences that can meet us.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
“You don’t realize it, perhaps, but you are turning these delusions and illusions of the past into criminal things. Relinquish everything. Stay in bed until you feel so shock full of energy, hope, courage that you bounce out of abed. You can only aid the world–if you still believe the world needs our individual aid–by retaining your faith in life. Your body may be weak, but I know you still have wings.”
Henry Miller, A Literate Passion: Letters of Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller
“I… want to inherit the witch in my women ancestors—the willfulness, the passion, ay, the passion where all good art comes from as women, the perseverance, the survivor skills, the courage, the strength of las mujeres bravas, peleoneras, necias, berrrinchudas. I want to be una brava, una peleonera, necia, nerrinchuda. I want to be bad if bad means I must go against society—el Papá, el Pápa, the boyfriend, lover, husband, girlfriend, comadres—and listen to my own heart, that incredible witch’s broom that will take me where I need to go.”
Sandra Cisneros, A House of My Own
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.”
Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
“Many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, ‘What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.’ Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope.”
Vincent van Gogh, The Letters of Vincent van Gogh
“In the winter I am writing about, there was much darkness. Darkness of nature, darkness of event, darkness of the spirit. The sprawling darkness of not knowing. We speak of the light of reason. I would speak here of the darkness of the world, and the light of———. But I don’t know what to call it. Maybe hope. Maybe faith, but not a shaped faith—only, say, a gesture, or a continuum of gestures. But probably it is closer to hope, that is more active, and far messier than faith must be. Faith, as I imagine it, is tensile, and cool, and has no need of words. Hope, I know is a fighter and a screamer.”
Mary Oliver, Winter Hours: Prose, Poems, and Prose Poems
“There is always some miracle left; and though miracles do not happen, they might happen. Who knows? Perhaps our intelligence, our instinct, our senses, in spite of their daylight clearness, are leading us astray. Perhaps the one thing needful is just that unreasoning courage which follows hope’s will-o’-the-wisp as it burns…”
Jens Peter Jacobsen, Niels Lyhne
“But if the deepest loss, […] / can be, not just survived, but made into the matter / of hope, made into song, not into a hatchet / to cut off the offending parts, made into poems / then blessed be the end of things, the loss of whatever / secures us blindly and mutely to our lives.”
Julia Alvarez, The Other Side/El Otro Lado
“I run / stumbling, expectant. / Impatience is hopelessly / desperate. Hope / takes time.”
Marie Ponsot, Springing: New and Selected Poems
“How lightly we learn to hold hope, / as if it were an animal that could turn around / and bite your hand. And still we carry it / the way a mother would, carefully, / from one day to the next.”
Danusha Laméris, The Moons of August
“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
Representative John Lewis
“Where does such a force come from? What does it mean? A voice very faint, and inside me, offers a possibility: how shall there be redemption and resurrection unless there has been a great sorrow? And isn’t struggle and rising the real work of our lives?”
Mary Oliver, Winter Hours: Prose, Poems, and Prose Poems
“Don’t forget that apparent impossibility of something is the first sign of its naturalness—in a different world, obviously.
Marina Tsvetaeva, from a letter to Anatoly Steiger
“Grieve. Have / hope.”
Jorie Graham, Swarm
Tumblr media
John Berryman, “The Heart is Strange”
“Skin had hope, that what’s skin does. / Heals over the scarred place, makes a road.”
Naomi Shihab Nye, “Two Countries”
“I am quite troubled in the depths of my soul. But that will pass,”
George Sand, in a letter to Gustave Flaubert
“Let’s dance a little before we go home to hell.”
Muriel Rukeyser, A Muriel Rukeyser Reader
Tumblr media
Hélène Cixous, Hyperdream (tr. Beverly Bie Brahic)
“That most moments were substantially the same did not detract at all from the possibility that the next moment might be utterly different.”
Marilynne Robinson, Housekeeping
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ada Limón, “Dead Stars”
“Listen, everyone has a chance. Is it spring, is it morning? Are there trees near you, and does your own soul need comforting? Quick, then — open the door and fly on your heavy feet…”
Mary Oliver, New and Selected Poems
“Get to the bottom of this intensity and have faith in what is most horrible, instead of fighting it off—it reveals itself for those who can trust it, in spite of its overwhelming and dire appearance, as a kind of initiation. By way of loss, by way of such vast and immeasurable experiences of loss, we are quite powerfully introduced to the whole.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, from a letter to Countess Alexandrine Schwerin, June 16, 1922
“…only one thing is urgently needed: to attach oneself with unconditional purpose somewhere to nature, to what is strong, striving and bright, and to move forward without guile, even if that means in the least important, daily matters. Each time we tackle something with joy, each time we open our eyes toward a yet untouched distance we transform not only this and the next moment, but we also rearrange and gradually assimilate the past inside of us.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, from a letter to Adelheid von der Marwitz, September 11, 1919
“Continue to believe that with your feeling and with your work you take part in what is the greatest. The more strongly you cultivate this belief inside of you, the more it will give rise to reality and world.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, from a letter to Elisabeth Freiin Schenk zu Schweinsberg, September 23, 1908
“…I have known with certainty that the worst things, and even despair, are only a kind of abundance and an onslaught of existence that one decision of the heart could turn into its opposite. Where things become truly difficult and unbearable, we find ourselves in a place already very close to its transformation.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, from a letter to Anita Forrer, February 14, 1920
“…he says, it will be all right.
“It is not the saying of an oracle or a prophet. They are words you might speak to a child ... and somehow I am comforted. He does not mean that it does not hurt. He does not mean that we are not frightened. Only that: we are here. This is what it means to swim in the tide, to walk the earth and feel it touch your feet. This is what it means to be alive.”
Madeline Miller, Circe
“Right then she knows herself even less than she knows the sea. Her courage comes from not knowing herself, but going ahead nevertheless. Not knowing yourself is inevitable, and not knowing yourself demands courage.
Clarice Lispector, Complete Stories; “The Waters of the World”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Recovery (which includes return and renewal of health) is a re-gaining—regaining of a clear view. I do not say “seeing things as they are” and involve myself with the philosophers, though I might venture to say “seeing things as we are (or were) meant to see them”—as things apart from ourselves. We need, in any case, to clean our windows; so that the things seen clearly may be freed from the drab blur of triteness or familiarity—from possessiveness. Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention, perceiving their likeness and unlikeness: that they are faces, and yet unique faces.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, from his essay On Fairy-Stories
Tumblr media
Camille Norton, Corruption: Poems
“Keep busy with survival. Imitate the trees. Learn to lose in order to recover, and remember that nothing stays the same for long, not even pain, psychic pain. Sit it out. Let it all pass. Let it go.”
May Sarton, Journal of a Solitude
“I have the fervour of myself for a presence / and my own spirit for light; / and my spirit with its loss / knows this; though small against the black, / small against the formless rocks, / hell must break before I am lost;”
H.D. from Collected Poems; “Eurydice”
Tumblr media
Denise Levertov, “Epilogue”
“The days go numb, the wind / sucks the world from your senses like withered leaves. // Through the empty branches the sky remains. / It is what you have. / Be earth now, and evensong. / Be the ground lying under that sky. / Be modest now, like a thing / ripened until it is real…”
Rainer Maria Rilke, from Rilke’s Book of Hours (tr. Anita Barrows, Joanna Macy)
“I know your sorrow and I know that for the likes of us there is not ease for the heart to be had from words of reason and that in the very assurance of sorrow’s fading there is more sorrow. So I offer you only my deeply affectionate and compassionate thoughts and wish for you only that the strange thing may never fail you, whatever it is, that gives us the strength to live on and on with our wounds.”
Samuel Beckett’s words of consolation to his friend, Alan Schneider
“What matters is not to allow my whole life to be dominated by what is going on inside me. That has to be kept subordinate one way or another. What I mean is: one must not let oneself be completely disabled by just one thing, however bad; don’t let it impede the great stream of life that flows through you. I have the feeling of something secret deep inside me that no one knows about.”
Etty Hillesum, from a diary entry featured in An Interrupted Life
“You have been told that, even like a chain, you are as weak as your weakest link. / This is but half the truth. You are also as strong as your strongest link. / To measure you by your smallest deed is to reckon the power of the ocean by the frailty of its foam. / To judge you by your failures is to cast blame upon the seasons for their inconstancy.”
Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet
“Try to keep what is beautiful to you and what you can use for today and now — You must not let things you cannot help destroy you —”
Georgia O’Keeffe, from Georgia O’Keeffe: Art and Letters
“What we love, shapely and pure, / is not to be held, / but to be believed in.”
Mary Oliver, from Evidence; “Swans”
“In time of the crises of the spirit, we are aware of all our need, our need for each other and our need for ourselves. We call up, with all the strength of summoning we have, our fullness. And then we turn; for it is a turning that we have prepared; and act. The time of turning may be very long. It may hardly exist.”
Muriel Rukeyser, from A Muriel Rukeyser Reader, “The Life of Poetry”
“To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.”
Howard Zinn, A Power Governments Cannot Suppress
“But don’t lose heart, dear ones—don’t lose heart. Don’t let it make you bitter. Try to understand. Try to understand. The world’s already bitter enough, we got to try to be better than the world.”
James Baldwin, from Another Country
“You do not have to be good. / You do not have to walk on your knees / for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting. / You only have to let the soft animal of your body / love what it loves. / Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine. / Meanwhile, the world goes on.”
Mary Oliver, “Wild Geese”

What do you think Theon's role will be in TWOW? I have seen many say that he's going to get killed or that he's going to make the King's moot null and void but I can't help but feel he has a much bigger purpose. One thing that often gets ignored, maybe because it's pretty much in the background, is the magical/supernatural elements of his character, which i think is going to be important either in terms of defeating Euron or helping with the long night.
Anon I agree with you wholeheartedly! I don’t believe that he will be killed (by Stannis anyway.) Though I do definitely think he will have a role to play with Asha in nullifying the Kingsmoot like Torgon Greyiron, the Latecomer. There is just no way Tris would have dropped that tidbit of highly applicable historical info while trying to seduce Asha if it was going to come to nothing. Then again, stuff like that happened in the TV series all the time but I doubt that will be the case in the books. GRRM is much more likely, I think, to never publish them at all rather than leave loose ends.
I agree with theories that there will be two Kingsmoots in the books and that the show chose to combine them. I think Theon will support his sister or she will support him. I honestly think that perhaps after all they have been through, Theon and Asha can finally experience a close familial relationship (which Theon has always yearned for) but which was never possible since they were separated from each other as children- and then were both competing for their father’s approval and trust as young adults. Now that Balon is dead, I really feel like Theon has the potential to find a true family with Asha as his true self- especially given the emotional reaction Asha had to seeing him again and witnessing what Ramsay did to him.
Now one thing I have always loved about Theon is how incredibly HUMAN his story is. It is intimate and focused on identity. And in the asoiaf world where people are seeking power or raising dragons or trying to save the world, it is refreshing that Theon’s story is focused on trying to discover how to be a person. How to keep one’s humanity in spite of how horrific the world is or the horrific actions one has undertaken themselves. There are beautiful themes of identity, redemption, and survival in his arc, but most notably, it does not revolve around magic the way other character’s plots have up to this point.
However, I also think that it is undeniable that there is a magical element in Theon’s story as well. And I think the magical element surfaces when Theon is getting closer to his true self or facing the things he has done. When he is more entrenched in denial, the magical element of his story is suppressed. Yet during ACOK when feeling guilt over ordering the death of the boys, he has a green dream. And again, in ADWD, when he is reclaiming his name and his identity, Bran is able to make contact with him through the Heart Tree. And then again, when he is Stannis’ prisoner in the sample chapter of TWOW and he continually is speaking the truth and reclaiming his name- insisting that Stannis calls him Theon- Bran or Bloodraven are speaking on his behalf through the ravens, urging him to be brought to the heart tree.
Now some people argue that Theon did not actually have a green dream in ACOK but I definitely think it was. I have quoted the entire section from ACOK under the cut, so you can decide for yourself. In it, Theon basically has a vision of the Red Wedding a book before it actually happens- In the dream, Robb and Grey Wind walk into a banquet all, bleeding from “half a hundred savage wounds.” Some have said that Theon’s dream wasn’t prophetic but more tied to his guilt but I disagree because there are the other people in it that Theon would have no reason to know about such as Lyanna. “The slim, sad girl who wore a crown of pale blue roses and a white gown spattered with gore could only be Lyanna.” Theon would obviously have known about Lyanna but there is no way that he knew about her dying in a “bed of blood.” That is something that is only revealed in Ned’s memories. And Ned told everyone else that Lyanna died of a fever. So he is dreaming accurately about things that he wouldn’t know, which is why I believe this specific dream is a green dream as opposed to only guilt.
So to answer your question. I believe that Theon has to survive at least being a prisoner to Stannis because there is so much more that has been foreshadowed for him. There is the Ironborn plot and then there is also the fact that Bran is trying to contact Theon. I think that Bran is extremely important when it comes to the fight against the Others and the Long Night, so the fact that he is reaching out to Theon made me feel that Theon is also important to that aim in some way. That being said, the show made me doubt Bran (or Bloodraven’s) intentions with Theon- like is he just going to be offered as some sort of sacrifice? I sincerely hope not.
Luckily, what gives me hope is Asha’s plan for invalidating the Kingsmoot and the idea that he still needs to defeat Euron... Plus EURON himself, unlike in the show, is an incredible force of potential dark magic to be reckoned with. And there is also the really incredible symbolism of the sea-reek with Theon- which I talked about briefly on my other blog here and which I think shows that he still has much to do with the Ironborn narrative. Invalidating the Kingsmoot seems like it would have to occur after whatever happens once Bran or Bloodraven get Theon to the Heart Tree so hopefully, that means they do not have any nefarious plans for Theon. And perhaps it also points to the fact that he is, for some reason, important in the coming battle against the Others. Perhaps because of how very human his arc has been up to this point? Some Theon fans have said that they think the idea of him becoming a huge hero of the series would almost cheapen his very human journey. And I do get that. But I think that he has already become a hero honestly and that his very humanity that he has worked so hard to find within himself may be a key to help against the long night. Or at least, that is what I would like.
Here is Theon’s Dream from A Clash of Kings:
That night he dreamed of the feast Ned Stark had thrown when King Robert came to Winterfell. The hall rang with music and laughter, though the cold winds were rising outside. At first it was all wine and roast meat, and Theon was making japes and eyeing the serving girls and having himself a fine time... until he noticed that the room was growing darker.
But there were others with faces he had never known in life, faces he had seen only in stone. The slim, sad girl who wore a crown of pale blue roses and a white gown spattered with gore could only be Lyanna. Her brother Brandon stood beside her, and their father Lord Rickard just behind. Along the walls figures halfseen moved through the shadows, pale shades with long grim faces.
Theon woke with a scream, startling Wex so badly that the boy ran naked from the room.
