½
Plot: Six survivors of a shipwreck are stranded on an island, including a mad scientist bent upon resurrecting the dead.
Review: Appallingly racist, rushed, and cliche with little horror, this film is a shallow slog despite its short runtime.
Year: 1942
Genre: Sci-Fi Horror
Country: United States
Language: English
Runtime: 1 hour 1 minute
Director: Joseph H. Lewis
Writer: Al Martin
Cinematographer: Jerome Ash
Editor: Ralph Dixon
Cast: Una Merkel, Lionel Atwill, Nat Pendleton, Claire Dodd, Hardie Albright, Richard Davies, Anne Nagel, Al Kikume, John Eldredge
------
Story: 0.5/5 - Atrocious dialogue, characters, and racism destroy a pointless plot. The pacing is shocking, with scenes ending almost as quickly as they begin.
Performances: 2/5 - Atwill seems to be phoning in his cliched performance and Dodd is unbearable as the comedic relief.
Cinematography: 2/5 - Looks like a generic television show.
Editing: 1.5/5
Effects & Props: 2/5 - The boat fire is corny even for the era and many of the props look cheap.
Sets: 2/5 - Obvious, bland sets with fake stone decor.
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 1/5 - The indigenous people's costumes are both offensive and silly, and the survivors look far too pristine for their circumstances.
Trigger Warnings:
Very mild violence
Extremely racist depictions of indigenous people
Brownface
Medical scenes
