Outside the White Cube: Place to Exchange Any Ideas for the Arts

Über das  Projekt:

　Das „White Cube" bezeichnet einen Fachbegriff, der hauptsächlich in der modernen Kunst für Ausstellungsräume mit komplett weissen Wänden verwendet wird, an welche die Kunstwerke befestigt werden. Unser Projekt "Outside the White Cube" kreiert mit diesen Begriff ein Raum des Widerstands der seit jeher herrschenden konservativen Machtstrukturen und dem Gefühl der Beengung durch den weißen Wänden. Die Initiator*innen dieses Projektes sind Tetsuya Ueda, Choku Kimura, Yuto Sugitani und h uka.  Die Initiator*innen teilen die Skepsis der herrschenden konservativen Machtverhältnisse in der Beziehung zwischen den Kunstwerken und den Ausstellungsräumen, den Museen und des Kunstmarktes. Sie teilen ein Gefühl der Beengung.

　Der Kritiker und Künstler Brian O'Doherty schreibt in seinem 1976 veröffentlichten Essay der Zeitschrift 'Artforum', welches später unter dem Titel „Inside the White  Cube: The Ideology of the Gallery Space" veröffentlicht wurde, dass der weiße Raum alles andere als neutral ist und stattdessen einem ideologisch gefüllten Raum entspreche. Im White Cube würden Kunstwerke aus ihrem sozialen und historischen Kontext entrissen und die Kunstwerke an den Wänden würden eher wie religiöse Stätten wirken. O'Doherty betont, dass durch den White Cube-Effekt, alles was sich in diesem weißen Raum befände, automatisch zu einem Kunstwerk wird.  Zwei Jahre zuvor, im Jahr 1974, schuf der amerikanische Konzeptkünstler Michael Asher ein Werk, bei welchem er die Wand zwischen dem Büro der Galerie und dem Ausstellungsraum entfernt hat. Mit diesem Werk wollte er verdeutlichten, dass es nicht der weiße Raum ist, sondern die Prozesse die im Hintergrund stattfinden, Kunstwerke erst zu solchen mache.  

　Die Kunstgeschichtlerin, Kunstkritikerin und Journalistin Julia Voss erklärt in ihrem Buch 'Hinter weißen Wänden /Behind the White Cube', dass es aufgrund des Rückgangs der Anzahl von öffentlicher Museen eine „Strukturveränderung" gegeben habe, wodurch private Sammler zunehmend an Macht und Einfluss gewonnen hätten. Sammler wie beispielsweise François Pinault aus Frankreich haben durch Zugang zur gesamten Wertschöpfungskette von Kunstwerken, von privaten Museen bis hin zu Auktionshäusern, einen Vorteil gegenüber der öffentlichen Kunstmuseen. Voss bezeichnet dies als entscheidendes Merkmal des Strukturwandels in der Kunstwelt.  

　Der White Cube besteht weiterhin inmitten dieser widersprüchlichen Umstände und wir empfinden ein unbestimmtes Gefühl der Krise gegenüber den Machtstrukturen, die innerhalb existieren. Deshalb haben wir beschlossen, den White Cube als eine Metapher für die Umfeld der Künste zu sehen und uns gegen die herausfordernde Situation zu  stellen, in der es schwer ist, den autonomischen Wert des Kunstwerks selbst zu  betrachten.  Das Prinzip von Outside the White Cube lautet daher "Widerstand gegen den bestehenden Konservatismus und Beengheit in der Kunst und ihren Räumen". In einem ersten Schritt organisieren wir dieses  Projekt "Outside the White Cube: Place to Exchange Any Ideas for the Arts" als Anstoß eine der Maßnahmen zum Erreichen des Ziels.  

　Wir glauben, dass es nur sehr wenige Orte gibt, an denen eine Meinungsäußerung zur Kunst übergreifend aller sozialen und demografischen Strukturverhältnisse möglich ist. Wir möchten deshalb hier als Teil des Dörfler2 Projektes hier Hilfe von Fragebögen einen Raum bieten,wo solch einen aktiven Austausch von Meinungen und Gefühlen zur zeitgenössichen Kunst möglich ist. Durch diese aktive Beteiligung, durch das Hinterlassen von Kommentaren und Meinungen, wird nicht nur das Verständnis der zeitgenössischen Kunst vertieft, sondern auch eine Chance geboten, Probleme zu erkennen. アウトサイド・ザ・ホワイト・キューブ：芸術のための意見交換場

本プロジェクトについて  本プロジェクト「アウトサイド・ザ・ホワイト・キューブ:芸術のための意見交換所」は、 私たち Outside the White Cube による「芸術を取り巻く環境のもつ保守性や閉塞感に対する抵抗」という活動の一環です。私たちはここに意見箱を設置し、意見交換の場を用意しました。 私たちは、まず、さまざまな人の芸術についての意見を共有する必要があると考えています。  それに加えて、発起人たちは、ここでそれぞれ作品の展示を行っています。まず上田哲也は、モダニズムにおける形式と内容の分離に対して、再び両者を一つに統合することを試みています。意味が形式と切り離され、絵画から美的な要素しか見出されなくなることは、すなわち絵画が容易に、政治利用が可能になることにつながるからです。上田は絵画における形式と内容の統合を通して、形式と内容の分離が生み出す、絵画における脱批評化と保守的な利用に対して抵抗を行っています。  次に木村直は「énoncé」というシリーズを通して、写真が単線的な歴史解釈に回収されることに対して抵抗しています。木村は énoncé において、一つ一つの写真を「最小情報単位」として扱います。歴史の連続性から切り離された断片的なメディアとしての写真を見つめることは、ありのままの世界を、ありのままに見つめることに繋がると、木村は考えています。同時に「ありのままに見つめること」には、常に困難さを伴います。  絵画を意味する Tableau の語源である「板 Tabula」という言葉は、机 Table などのさまざまな言葉に派生しました。杉谷遊人はその事実に着目し、家具や装飾など異なる形態から、 絵画という形式を捉え直しています。杉谷の制作は、語源という観点から物事を規定する枠組みを、過去のある時点まで遡り、新たな可能性を探るものです。それは常に加速を 促す社会に対する抵抗でもあり、立ち止まって物事の在り方を再考する姿勢でもあります。  h uka はこれまで、作成した figure と空間を物質的及び内容的に関わらせる作品形式で 装置の制作・設置をしています。本展では、アウトサイド・ザ・ホワイト・キューブの理念 をロゴマークで落とし込みました。それらは芸術作品という概念が持つ形式性からの離脱であり、接近でもあります。h uka の制作は、本展覧会のプロジェクトを視覚的に支えると 同時に、自身の作家としての課題と本プロジェクトとを関係させて扱っています。  以上 4 名の発起人は、異なる視点と関心をもちながら、私たち自身を含んだ芸術を取り巻く環境に違和感を抱えています。そのような私たちの制作と様々な人々の芸術についての考えが同じ空間に共存するとき、ミュージアムやアートマーケットという一部の制度への疑問のみに止まらず、私たちの生活と芸術との繋がりが立ち現れると考えます。本プロジェクトは、誰もが批評的な対話に参加できる場の創造を目指しています。 企画者　上田哲也 文章一部執筆　木村 直
