In Episode 11 of Inside My Favorite Manuscript, Lindsey and Dot chat with Stephen Hopkins about Junius 11, one of the four surviving Old English poetic codices. We talked about a lot of things, including Genesis A & B, the strangeness of an Old English Exodus, horror, and nipples (yes, nipples!), and we laughed more than we have in a while.

Cotton MS Tiberius B V, folio 87v: Jannes and Jambres (Wikipedia page)
George Junius Stinney, Jr., a 14-year-old African American boy, was the youngest person ever to be executed in the United States during the 20th century.
On 16 June, 1944, guards led him to the electric chair at a South Carolina prison. George, who stood at only 5'1" and and weighed 95 pounds, had to sit on a Bible to fit into the adult-sized electric chair. The straps did not fit him, and an electrode was too big for his leg, but he was electrocuted anyway. Witnesses recoiled in horror as the death mask fell from his face, and tears streamed from his eyes.
George was accused of killing two young white girls, 11-year-old Betty June Binnicker and 8-year-old Mary Emma Thames. They were beaten with a railroad spike and dragged to a ditch near Acolu, about five miles from Manning, in central South Carolina. The girls' bodies were found a day after they disappeared, and George was arrested a few hours later when white men in suits came to take him away.
Due to the risk of a lynching, George was held at a jail 50 miles away from his home in Columbia, South Carolina. His father, who had helped search for the missing girls, was fired from his job and ordered to leave his home and workplace. George's family were also told to leave town prior to the trial to avoid further retribution. The courthouse was filled with an atmosphere of lynch mob hysteria during the trial. Without any family visits, the 14-year-old had to endure the trial and death alone.
The trial was found to have been unfair and racially motivated, with no real evidence linking George Stinney to the crime. His conviction was eventually posthumously pardoned 70 years after his execution on December 17, 2014. .
The defendant’s father referred to here is his natural father, T. Manlius Torquatus (83) cos. 165, who had emancipated him. The trial might have continued after the suicide (see lex Acilia line 29); if we can judge by this later law, a continuation of the trial would appear to be necessary if the injured parties were to receive monetary compensation.
In our previous study, we examined ten archaeological discoveries that demonstrated the historical accuracy of the Old Testament. Today, we will examine ten archaeological finds with relevance to the New Testament.
Let’s read together Acts 13:6-12.
Sergius Paulus inscription
A Roman proconsul was a governor or military commander of a province. Sergius was the proconsul of Cyprus under the reign of Claudius Caesar from 45 to 50 AD. A stone with a Greek inscription dating to 54 AD was found in northern Cypress. The inscription referred to an event that happened earlier than 54 AD and referenced a “proconsul Paulus.” It is very likely this inscription is speaking of the same Sergius Paulus who encountered Paul the Apostle in Paphos.
Let’s read together John 9:1-7.
Pool of Siloam
The pool of Siloam was a freshwater reservoir in the time of Jesus. It was at this pool where Jesus miraculously cured a man of his blindness. It was accidentally discovered in 2004 by workers doing sewage pipe maintenance in the old city of Jerusalem. The discovery of the pool of Siloam shows that the book of John is not a purely theological book. Rather, it is grounded in history.
Let’s read together Acts 19:22; Romans 16:23; and 2 Timothy 4:20..
Erastus inscription
A stone with a Latin inscription dating around 50 AD was found in Corinth. The inscription translated in English reads: “Erastus in return for hisa aedileship laid (the pavement) at his own expense.” (An aedile was a Roman magistrate in charge of public works.) This discovery points to the historicity of Erastus, an evangelist and a socially elite individual mentioned by Paul the Apostle.
Let’s read together Matthew 26:3 and John 18:13-14.
Caiaphas ossuary
An ossuary with the engraving “Joseph son of Caiaphas” was discovered in a burial cave in the old city of Jerusalem. The skeletal remains inside the ossuary were of a 50 year old. This ossuary is very likely the remains of the priest who presided over the trial of Jesus.
Let’s read together Acts 21:27-30 and Ephesians 2:14.
Temple warning inscription
The Jewish historian Josephus wrote of a partition in the Jewish temple with a stone inscription forbidding foreigners from entering the temple upon penalty of death. A complete stone inscription with such a warning was found in Jerusalem in 1871. Interestingly, there were traces of red paint in the stone inscription, meaning it was meant to be very visible to people.
This inscription correlates with the story in Acts 21:28-30 where the Jews accused Paul of bringing in Greeks into the temple and defiling it. Paul may have also referred to this barrier in Ephesians 2:14.
Let’s read together Leviticus 23:24 and Matthew 24:1-2.
Trumpeting place inscription
A stone with the Hebrew inscription “to the place of trumpeting” was discovered in Jerusalem, dating to the first century. It is thought this stone was atop the southwest corner of the temple of Jerusalem before it was cast down. This is evidence for the existence of the second temple of Jerusalem, which was destroyed in 70 AD.
Let’s read together Matthew 28:11-13.
Nazareth inscription
This stone inscription contains an edict from Caesar proclaiming the death penalty for those caught stealing bodies from tombs. This is a rather unusual decree as grave robbers normally would steal items from tombs, but not the bodies.
It is quite possible this inscription was written by Claudius Caesar in response to hearing Christians sharing the story of Jesus’ resurrection. Claudius would have considered Christians a dangerous anti-Roman movement.
Let’s read together Acts 18:12.
Gallio inscription
This is a collection of nine stone fragments of a letter written by Claudius Caesar in 52 AD. The Gallio inscription was found in Delphi, Greece, which is about 50 miles northwest of Corinth. This inscription makes mention of Junius Gallio being proconsul of Achaia. Gallio only served as proconsul from 51 to 52 AD. The Gallio inscription is a fixed marker that allows us to date Paul’s ministry.
Let’s read together Matthew 27:1-24 and Mark 15:1-15.
Pilate stone
Pontius Pilate was a Roman prefect governing Judea from 26 to 34 AD. He is mentioned by the historians Josephus, Tacitus, and Philo in addition to the Gospels. The Pilate stone confirms the historicity of Pontius Pilate.
Let’s read together John 18:31-33.
P52 fragment of John 18:31-33
This is a papyrus fragment dating to 125 to 175 AD. This is the oldest known fragment of the New Testament Gospels. The significance of this fragment is that it was written within 100 years of the events of the Gospels.
There has not been an archaeological find that contradicts the Bible. The historical events recorded in the New Testament are factual. The archaeological discoveries mentioned in this lesson should increase our trust in the Bible.
Friend, will you trust what the Bible says about historical things? Will you trust what the Bible says about spiritual things?
So. There was a massacre. It didn’t take long to notice a dead Garlean soldier and know who was behind it. Feelings of guilt. He should have been there for the fight.
The vision made it even more clear that it was specifically Rodney they were after, though they didn’t seem to connect ‘the slayer of eikons’ with specifically who Rodney is and had been. He saw that the most prominent scions were at least not dead, but captured by Garleans led by Livia sas Junius was not a whole sight better.
The message Minfilia left directed him to the church in Eastern Thanalan for sanctuary, though Rodney wasn’t sure how helpful that would be.
The Father was nice enough, they kept Rodney busy helping with some shy guy and burying the bodies. Until an elven kid Rodney had seen a few times before showed up and accused the guy of being Cid nan Garlond! Of course Rodney knew the name of the best engineer the empire had, who abandoned them a few years back.
Anyway, the kid (Alphy No?) wanted to reestablish the scions with just the three of them to take on the Ixal god Garuda, but they needed an airship Cid had 5 years ago, and that was last seen way north in snowy Coerthas. A bit of an ask, but Rodney didn’t have a lot going on with half his associates dead or captured, so why not.
Turns out Coerthas is full of paranoid and political elves who think everyone is a heretic and will be killed by an inquisitor if suspected. Rodney managed to help save some falsely accused kid, but the inquisitor both told Rodney to find the airship and leave... and then when they knew where the airship is he purposely stood in their way to getting it with bullshit lies. Even if some of the elves are friendly, Rodney is not being paid enough for this shit.

George Junius Stinney Jr In 1944 George was the youngest person to be given the death sentence in the US. At the age of 14 he was accused of killing two white girls aged 11 and 17. The bodies of the respective victims had been found next to George's house, he was subsequently arrested as the lead suspect. He was convicted of murder by an all white jury after a 2 hour trial. His conviction was based off of eyewitness accounts that later proved false. The judge ordered George's sentenced 10 minutes later - to be put to death by means of the electric chair. During this monstrous trial, George was refused the right to legal representation, his parents were forcibly restrained from attending the trial, while he maintained his innocence. The 14 year-old was electrocuted with 5,380 volts and 70 years too late his innocence was finally proven by a judge in South Carolina. A film called '83 Days' was made in 2018 portraying George's days in confinement before death. George was not guilty of murder, he was simply guilty of being black. https://www.instagram.com/p/Cl0Tp2duqmUTeJAnqTI1ia4NoY3K2-ObGtZO3U0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🏳️🌈 Rec post!! A queer film + a queer TV series from Hong Kong ~
1) Twilight’s Kiss (叔·叔) (Dir. Ray Yeung 楊曜愷; 2019)
youtube
Twilight’s Kiss offers a very realistic depiction of two elderly, in-the-closet gays in Hong Kong, who have dedicated their lives building a conventional family before unexpectedly falling in love with each other. It is a quiet film, and the romance is told in the same subtle manner as love is expressed (and not expressed) in their generation. The actors were phenomenal at playing regular Hong Kong men of their age (Pak mentioned he “came to Hong Kong”, ie, he was a refugee from Mao’s China, as the vast majority of his demographics was), which added to the resonance of the story ~ they could’ve been anyone, and anyone could’ve been them.
The director of the film, Ray Yeung, is an openly gay man.

2) Ossan’s Love (大叔的愛) (2021)
The unlikely (and hilarious) love triangle between Muk (Left), Tin (Center) and KK (Right) in Ossan’s Love.
For those who found the name familiar, it’s because the series is a (faithful) remake of the popular 2018 Japanese series of the same name. The Hong Kong version is longer (15 episodes; ~ 40 min each) compared to the Japanese original, and its mood is cheerier, sweeter, and also ... more BL, with the lead characters Tin (Haruta in the original) and Muk (Maki in the original) played by two idols, Edan Lui 呂爵安 and Anson Lo 盧瀚霆, from the very popular local boy band MIRROR.
(Being idols didn’t prevent them from kissing. Not in Hong Kong, 2021.)
(Yes, they kissed, and hugged and fought and bantered...)
Ossan’s Love is culturally significant in that it became the first gay drama to be aired primetime in Hong Kong, and by extension, in China. Beloved by the locals, it was also very much discussed—hk-queers expressed their (surprised) joy that finally, they got to see a respectful, dignified presentation of who they are and how they love. More importantly, they got to see HKers, older generations included, glued to the TV for their kind of love story, rooting for the lead male characters to get together.
This signifies a broader acceptance of LGBT+ in the city than previously assumed; this is very important and comforting to the community in June, 2021, when the future of LGBT+ rights in the city is very uncertain. After the 2019 protests, pro-democracy leaders have been arrested and jailed in large numbers; newspaper that advocated for freedom has been shut down. Meanwhile, during the airing of Ossan’s Love , the (in)famous pro-Beijing politician, Junius Ho, claimed the series to have violated the city’s much feared, much abused National Security Law—the law that officially aims to catch “traitors”, but has been used as a “catch-all” excuse to arrest political dissidents and suppress the freedoms of the city. Ho was of sufficient prominence that his words could draw the attention of officials who have been sent from across the mainland-HK border to do Beijing’s bidding.
Also, Ossan’s Love was produced not by the powerful, once popular TVB (local TV station), which, with Chinese investors becoming its major shareholders like many other HK press and media companies, has become very pro-Beijing and conservative. The series was produced by ViuTV, a much smaller station preferred by young, pro-democracy Hong Kongers ... which means the future of the series, of its stars (MIRROR’s members are once-contestants of a ViuTV talent show), of even the station itself is also uncertain.
Hence, Im recommending Ossan’s Love now ... even if the official version doesn’t have the best English subtitles. The full series is on Youtube (links below); the soundtrack is in Cantonese and (Traditional) Chinese subtitles are available, but English is only available via Youtube’s built-in Auto-Translate function.
For those who would like to catch a short scene of two cute HK boys in love, the last 5 minutes of Ep 11 would be a nice place to watch. You can see how comfortable these two bandmates were with each other—Edan (Tin) had played two supporting roles before this series, while Anson (Muk) had never acted before. Edan and Anson have claimed that being close friends in RL meant their intimate scenes were easy to film (BTW, Anson is gay, Edan isn’t).
Edan Lui (Left) & Anson Lo (Right), Harper's Bazaar HK, May 2021. Edan was a uni student before joining hk-ent. Anson was a dance instructor.
(You can also see why, when I watched the Gg + Dd Happy Camp episode very, very early on in my turtlehood, I assumed Gg and Dd would have ample opportunities to work together again, to play and be happy in front of the camera ... just like how I remembered on-screen couples from my days in HK—the couples, the CPs of the time, would collaborate repeatedly after having demonstrated chemistry and become commercial success—in film and TV projects, in variety shows, in awards ceremonies as presenting guests etc etc. This multi-project collaboration was, and still is, viewed as a Very Good Thing, and not only for commercial reasons. The inter-personal fate (緣份) to play on-screen couples repeatedly, per the tradition of HK-ent, is something of a blessing, talked about as a small-scale version of having the destiny, the luck to be together across multiple lives, multiple incarnations. Actors treasure this kind of collaboration and the HK audience celebrates it, regardless of the marital status of the actors in RL. Entertainment news dedicate articles about it.)
(There’s actually an example of that in Ossan’s Love: Kenny Wong 黃德斌, the actor who played the titular Ossan, KK, and Rachel Kan 簡慕華, who played his wife Francesca, had already played husband and wife three times before. Rachel had retired from acting in 2017 and moved to Canada; she told reporters that she returned to shoot Ossan’s Love primarily so that she could play Kenny’s wife again).
* Below is a small warning for Ossan’s Love ~ *
The humour of Ossan’s Love is often wild and zany, especially where it adapts from the Japanese original. Some of it, i-fandomers may find uncomfortable. Notably, the titular Ossan (Japanese, meaning “Older Man”) was Tin and Muk’s boss; and he and Darren, another superior of Tin and Muk, were also part of the romantic story line.
One can argue, therefore, that Ossan’s Love contains a *very* “Me Too” situation; however, this is also why I find Ossan’s Love interesting beyond being a Chinese-speaking gay drama—it is clear that the production team of this series meant no disrespect, and from the series’ reception, it’s also clear that hk-queers and other more progressive members among the audience didn’t see disrespect in the product. This series therefore offers a glimpse to the answers of some questions I’ve had: how does Hong Kong of 2021 translate respect for queers (as well as for older men and women) into day-to-day words and actions? How do these culturally-specific habits in speech and behaviour compare to the norms in, for example, the United States (that I’m familiar with)?
“Political incorrectness” was also found in some of Tin’s internal monologue. However, I thought, perhaps, that was why the series has proven to be disarming to the general audience both in HK and Japan, places with a tradition of homophobia stemming often not from malice, but from ignorance, from sex being considered taboo for so much of the places’ history. Tin, as someone who haven’t seemed to have spared a thought about homosexuality before the story had taken place, spoke the minds of the audiences who aren’t familiar with homosexuality. Muk, meanwhile, presented the perspective of someone who already understood what being gay was and wasn’t about. Tin, therefore, led the audience towards Muk and his views step by step, all the while without being judgemental—how could he be? He was one of them too during his journey. He was the student, and he was also the protagonist who everyone—and I mean everyone—loved (in a rather funny manner :D). 🌈
