📽️ Tommy Boy (1995)
This is my favorite Chris Farley movie. It’s classic Chris Farley. The bumbling idiot with a heart of gold ends up figuring everything out and saving the day. It’s basically the same plot as Beverly Hills Ninja and Black Sheep, just with different scenarios and characters. Of all those mentioned though, I think Tommy Boy is the best one. It’s genuinely funny, pretty much from start to finish; but the actual story is good, too. My family and I quote this movie all the time because there are so many great one-liners. It’s definitely worth the watch.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (some innuendos, woman in bikini, woman skinny dipping at night with a brief flash of frontal nudity)
Language: 2/10 (no f-words, milder strong language throughout)
Violence: 1/10 (punching, hitting, beating up played for laughs)
Overall rating: 8/10

Extra Credit (Part 9)
Tumblr media
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 5.5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10
Little bit of a warning. From here on out, this story is going to be getting more explicit so sorry if you’re not a big fan of that.
The first thing Richie did after he had another drink was find Stan and ‘apologize’. Which basically just consisted of Richie following him around and bugging him until he eventually started talking again. By the time Richie had successfully bothered Stan into talking, he was about four or five drinks in and was pretty sure Stan had only given in because he didn’t want a drunk Richie following him around and telling him not to be salty.
At around twelve, Richie drunkenly said bye to Bev and Ben and with the help of Stan made it back to Stan’s car.
“God Rich, you’re like a giant two year old.” Stan ground out, pushing on Richie’s head to maneuver him into the passenger seat. Once Richie was actually in the seat, Stan headed back into the building to grab his and Richie’s jackets and properly say goodbye to everyone.
Richie had tried to follow him but Stan had locked the door and in his drunken state Richie couldn’t figure out how to get it unlocked. Eventually he gave up on trying to pry the latch open and dug in his pockets for his phone.
He had three new messages, two from Eddie, and one from Bev. The one from Bev was from less than a minute ago so Richie opened that one.
Beverly Hills: Don’t text ‘you know who’ around Stan and don’t do anything stupid tonight.
Richie scoffed down at his phone. What was she talking about, he never did anything stupid. With that thought in mind, Richie left the conversation with Bev and opened the new messages he had gotten from Eddie though out the night. Both had been from about an hour ago.
Little one: Studying is so boring.
Little one: Text me when you get home.
Richie smiled down at his phone. Bev had told him not to text Eddie when Stan was around, and Stan was currently nowhere in sight as he typed out a message.
‘Just headinig home now’
Richie turned from his phone when the driver’s side door was pulled open. He locked his phone just as a jacket come flying at his face.
 ~~~
Richie woke up tangled in his bedsheets, a pillow thrown over his face, and a massive headache. He slowly sat up in bed and squinted at the light that came in through the window beside his bed. His blanket slid down his arms as he shifted but he immediately grabbed the blanket again and wrapped it around his shoulders when the cold morning air hit his bare chest. Sometime before he had fallen asleep he has changed into his pajama bottoms. He took a minute to take in his surroundings.
His bed was a complete mess, with half of his comforter on the floor and pillows thrown everywhere. A half empty bottle of water was on his bedside table. He reached over and chugged what was left as he looked around for his phone.
He eventually found it under one of his pillows but when he went to turn it on the dead battery sign popped up.
“Fucking great.” He mumbled as he leaned over the side of his bed to grab the phone charger. He plugged in the phone and then stood from the bed, keeping the blanket wrapped around himself as he made his way into the kitchen. Coffee on mornings after a lot of drinking were one of Richie’s favorite hangover cures.
When he got to the cupboard where he normally kept the instant coffee, he reached up and grabbed the box.
“Come fucking on.” Richie dropped the empty box on the counter and stomped over to his closet. Grabbing a pullover hoodie, his wallet, glasses, and keys to his house, Richie left his place and headed for the coffee shop across from his building.
The few strange looks he got as he crossed the street were a lot less then he was expecting to get with the way he looked.
As if Ninja turtle’s pajamas and an old hoodie with ‘your mom’ printed on the front in fancy handwriting wasn’t quite enough. Richie caught a glimpse of himself in a parked car window and his already naturally messy hair was a complete disaster. All he was missing was a bright pair of crocks and Richie was pretty sure he would make it on the cover of ‘People of Walmart’ easily.
The barista gave in a slightly confused look before going back to the weirdly cheery persona that all people that served coffee seemed to be required to have.
With a large coffee and a chocolate muffin in hand, Richie crossed the street back to his building. He had spent enough time looking like the neighborhood crazy person for one day.
Once he was back at his place, he headed straight back to his bed to curl up and try not to slowly die. It took him about twenty minutes to finish his breakfast and start to feel like an actual human again. After he took his last sip of coffee he reached over and grabbed his phone, holding the button and waiting for it to turn on.
It was then that Richie got the first snip bit of memory from the night before.
He had been talking to Eddie right?
Oh god. what had he said to Eddie that night.
As soon as the phone booted up, Richie immediately went into his messages to assess the damages. To his surprise, he hadn’t actually said anything that bad, though text at least. The only text that he had sent that alarmed him was one that he had sent at around one that said
‘Im goin calll you’
Richie opened the phone app and wanted to throw his phone and then himself out the window.
He facetimed Eddie at one in the morning…for almost an hour… and he didn’t remember anything he had said or done during it.
Putting the small heart attack that he was currently going through on pause, Richie opened the other concerning app. He had two unopened snaps. One from Bev and one from Eddie.
A little nervous to see what Eddie had sent, Richie opened Bev’s first. it was a picture of Bev’s open fridge. ‘look what you did…” Was typed out across the top.
It took Richie a second to see what was wrong and he laughed when he realized what she was talking about. Everything in the fridge had been flipped upside down. various jars and containers were carefully balanced and it seemed Richie had flipped everything.
He took a picture of himself with his hand covering half his face and said that he would come over later and fix it.
With nothing else to procrastinate with, Richie clicked on Eddie’s name and watched the picture pop up. it was from 2:50 and it was a selfie of Eddie lying in bed. He looked like he was spread out across the bed and with the ample amount of neck and chest exposed, it was a pretty safe bet to make that he was at least shirtless. The smile that stretched out on his face made Richie smile too, until he read the text at the bottom of the picture
“Well that was fun, but you need to go to sleep.”
Oh no.
Well that was probably one of the worst messages Richie could have gotten while trying to see if he had done anything stupid the night before, and it wasn’t that doing stuff with Eddie was particularly stupid (Not to him at least.) but doing stuff drunk and not remembering was.
There was no way he could just text Eddie and ask, that would be extremely embarrassing. And what if it hurt Eddie’s feelings.
Fuck he was an idiot.
After about an hour of pacing and trying to remember what had happened, Richie gave up and decided to try and get some actual work done. He changed into jeans and a less offensive hoodie and left for the university.
It took a little bit but eventually, Richie lost himself in reading students writing. The distraction from his weird love life. Love life? Or would it be sex life? Whatever it was, the distraction was nice and Richie worked for about an hour before getting a snap from the thing he was trying to be distracted from.
He wanted to see what the younger boy had sent but also didn’t. His natural curiosity won out and he opened the snap after taking a second to prepare for any embarrassment that was coming.
It was a selfie of Eddie sitting in a café, Richie was pretty sure it was the place Bill worked but he wasn’t certain. Eddie looked extremely cute that day, but Richie was starting to think that cute was just a permanent state Eddie seemed to stay in.
Eddie had written ‘So bored’ around his face in impressively neat loopy writing for something done on Snapchat.
Richie swiped left on Eddie’s name and opened up their chat history. He cringed when he scrolled up and saw how many snaps had been sent between the two that he had completely no memory of.
The little Eddie bitmoji popped up in the bottom corner, signaling that Eddie was currently looking at the chat, probably waiting for Richie to say something. Not wanting to make it weird, Richie typed out the first thing that came to mind.
‘studying?’
It wasn’t really all that exciting or smooth but Eddie started typing right away so Richie figured it was good enough.
‘Yep. Bill’s working and I already went for my morning run, what are you up to?’
Hmm, Richie didn’t know that Eddie went for runs. But he guessed there was a lot that he didn’t know about the other.
‘Marking papers, real exciting stuff.’
‘Want me to come make it more exciting?’
Richie laughed down at his phone. So whatever he had done last night hadn’t been bad enough that Eddie wanted to call this whole thing off, that was a good start.
‘I don’t know, its pretty boring. And I’ve told you before that it’s hard to get stuff done when you’re around.’
‘Well technically I am your TA this semester so shouldn’t we get used to working together?’
Well he had him there. He thought about it for a few seconds. Eddie was right, if he was going to be helping him mark stuff then they actually did have to work together, unless Richie wanted to be one of those professors that dumps all the marking on the TA and expects them to do everything and that wasn’t really his style.
‘Okay. A318 but if you come here we’re actually working!’
Eddie didn’t send anything back and after waiting a few minutes Richie closed down Snapchat and went back to marking. If Eddie actually showed up he would deal with everything then.
It was another ten minutes until Richie heard the quiet knock on his door. He jumped out of his desk chair and definitely didn’t run over to the door to open it.
Eddie stood on the other side when he pulled the door open, looking as cute as he had in his selfie.
“Well hello there sir, reporting for duty.” Eddie said jokingly, giving a little salute as he stepped closer towards Richie.
Richie moved his hand up to touch him but stopped when he realized that some one could walk down the hallway and see them. Instead he stepped backwards and to the side, gesturing for Eddie to come in. He did and Richie closed the door behind him.
“So this is your office, huh” Eddie was facing away from him at the moment but Richie was pretty sure he was doing that smirk that he did sometimes.
“Yep.” Richie stepped up behind him and put his hand on Eddie’s waist. He reached his other hand past Eddie to the desk and grabbed a small stack of papers.
“And here.” He lightly pushed on Eddie’s side. Eddie easily moved where he was being maneuvered and let his legs give out when the seat of a chair hit his legs. Richie put the papers down in front of him and pressed a light kiss to the side of Eddie’s neck. “Is where you can work.”
Eddie turned and looked up at Richie, confusion mixed with a hint of annoyance passes his face.
“Just highlight, what the student said was the main idea and any other part that you find interesting.” Richie instructed as he rounded the desk and sat back down in his chair. Eddie was still staring over at him, as Richie grabbed a highlighter from his desk and placed it in front of Eddie, laughing. “I told you, if you’re coming up here, we’re working.”
“Yeah I just figured we could do some other stuff before getting to the actual work part.” Eddie mumbled as he put the cap in his mouth and pulled it off of the highlighter.
“Or maybe we could talk about those rules, because you started to yesterday but got a little distracted.” Eddie continued a little louder. The smile on Richie face immediately dropped.
Well it wasn’t going to get any easier the longer he waited.
“Actually Eddie, about last night, um I don’t know if you noticed but I was kinda drunk.”
Eddie cut him off by letting out laugh. He quickly covered his mouth with his hand.
“Kinda?” He asked though his fingers. Richie rubbed at the back of his neck.
“Yeah. So maybe really drunk. And I don’t really remember what happened last night.” Richie got quieter as he spoke. He probably sounded so dumb. When he looked up Eddie had an amused look on his face, which really wasn’t what Richie had been expecting.
“So, you’re saying you don’t remember anything you did last night?” Eddie asked slowly, sliding forward out of his chair and dragging his fingers against the desk as he rounded it. Richie looked up at him as he came to a stop in front of him.
“You don’t remember any of the things you said to me?” He asked as he leaned down closer to Richie’s ear. Richie could feel his face heating up.
Oh God, there was so many things that he could have said, like the list was literally endless. Not knowing what to say, Richie simply nodded his head.
“Well, I could try to help remind you.” Eddie whispered into Richie’s ear, letting his lips lightly touch Richie’s neck, in almost the same place as Richie had earlier.
“Eddie…” Richie tried to sound authoritative, but the soft sound he made as Eddie kissed across his neck basically destroyed any hope of that.
Attempting to take back some kind of control of the situation, Richie raised his hand up to Eddie’s sides, pulling him closer by the fabric of his shirt.
Eddie took a step forward as he continued to kiss his way to Richie’s lips. When Eddie pressed their lips together, Richie used the grip he already had to pull him down onto his lap. The chair squeaked under them as Eddie settled on Richie’s legs.
Eddie moved his hands to hold Richie’s shoulders as he pressed his tongue against his bottom lip. Eddie hummed contently when Richie deepened the kiss by opening his mouth and basically letting Eddie do whatever he wanted.
While Eddie focused on Richie’s lips, Richie lowered his hands from Eddie’s sides to his outer thighs, shifting him closer so that their chests were touching. When Richie felt his dick press against Eddie’s he dropped his head and let out a quiet moan.
“Fuck Eddie.” Richie whispered, lowering his eye’s to look at Eddie’s lips which were kiss swollen and red. Richie watched as Eddie’s lips spread into a smile and suddenly Eddie was sitting in his lap laughing.
Richie stared up at the younger boy, completely dumbfounded. It was a solid minute before Eddie had stopped laughing enough to talk.
“Sorry, sorry. It’s just yesterday, you didn’t do anything bad. You called me at one and wanted to talk about some joke book you had when you were younger and then gave me a thirty-minute house tour of your one room apartment.” Eddie laughed from above Richie, who was staring up at him in complete embarrassment.
“So I didn’t try to send you dirty pictures or anything?” Richie asked.
“Nope, you just asked me to send you selfies and then you’d send back like, three messages about how cute I was.” Eddie smiled and quickly kissed Richie. “It was pretty funny.”
“Oh god, that’s almost worse. I’m so sorry.” Richie hid as much of his face behind his hand as he could.
“It’s fine, like I said, It was pretty funny.” Eddie laughed again as he stepped down from Richie’s lap. He walked back around the table and plopped down in the chair as Richie watched him confused. Eddie started laughing again when he saw Richie’s face.
“You said you wanted to work right?” He asked innocently, as if he hadn’t just been sitting in Richie’s lap.
Richie stared for a few seconds before huffing out a breath and shaking his head, a smile growing on his face.
“Yeah, I did. So you start on that pile and let me know if you need help with anything.” Richie grabbed another highlighter for himself and popped the top off as he looked up and saw Eddie smiling across the table at him before picking up the highlighter Richie had given him earlier and start underlining things on the paper in front of him.
DAYS 36-42
Tumblr media
DAY THIRTY-SIX [FEB 6]
8:30 AM - Make a chemex and get to work.
10:00 AM - Pineapple!
12:45 PM - Heat up cheesy red lentil soup for lunch with a La Croix.
4:00 PM - Do a 10-minute Peloton ride and a barre class. Barre class gets interrupted as I get text updates for the grocery order. I kind of end up half-assing it toward the end but I’m glad I got it done.
5:45 PM - Prep the kitchen for the grocery order – incoming of bread, greens, tomatoes, onions, garlic, tempeh, tofu, tortillas, tortilla chips, pretzels, apples, jalapenos, lemons, limes, cabbage, cilantro, vegan sour cream, rice, chickpeas, pinto beans, frozen burritos, bell peppers, eggs, parsley, ginger, BBQ sauce, buffalo sauce, grapes, sprouts, brussels sprouts, green beans, miso, cloves, frozen pizzas, hamburger buns, plant yogurt, cucumber, carrots, chipotle seitan sausages, tomato paste, broccoli, bananas, celery, potatoes, clementines, hashbrowns, red lentil pasta, dijon, seltzer, pineapple, dark chocolate, strawberry jam, vegetable bouillon, zucchini, mushrooms, dried oregano, radish, & snap peas. $342.39
7:00 PM - roast potatoes and make veggie sandwiches. Drink a hibiscus mezcal cocktail too. MAX RELAX for the rest of the eve. It’s Friday baby!
 DAY THIRTY-SIX: $342.39
DAY THIRTY-SEVEN
9:30 AM - Slept in weird vibes. Feel tingly when I stand which means blood pressure is bad. We are seeing friends today and I don’t want to power through it so I just drink some soy sauce. It does wonders and I’m feeling better within 30 minutes. Make a Chemex and watch an episode of dessert person.
10:30 AM - Head out to our pals’ house (If you read my last diary series, they’re the people we used to go to Suns games with) in uptown Phoenix for an outside hang. We meet their new baby and he is super cute. Hang out 10 feet apart and it feels so normal and chill. I also find out that I apparently qualify for the vaccine because I work to facilitate education, so I need to look into that.
2:45 PM - K and I haven’t eaten today and we’re starving. We split a Daiya pizza and eat snack on chips and salsa while we wait. I also eat a clementine.
5:30 PM - Feel my body starting to fade and I’m kind of barred out. Decide to walk to the lake. I do a bad job of getting my HR up but I still enjoy my time outside.
8:00 PM - I’m not hungry at all from all the salt. Decide to eat a small bowl of cheesy lentil soup for dinner but mostly just pound the water while working on a post for oil-free Greek dressing.
8:30 PM - I notice someone posts a sample sale for Splits 59 which is one of my favorite workout brands. I’m hitting 250 Pure Barre classes this week and use it as an excuse to celebrate. Buy 2 pairs of leggings and a cute tank. $70
10:00 PM - Definitely at that point in the day where I feel like I’m just passing time.
DAY THIRTY-SEVEN TOTAL: $70.00
DAY THIRTY-EIGHT
8:45 AM - Spend some time in bed adjusting my fantasy bball team. Still set to be undefeated in the more competitive league. Eventually make a chemex and post my oil-free greek dressing around the web.
10:30 AM - I listen to a session on Mined, cook brunch (tofu/egg tacos with soyrizo) and and frantically get ready for M’s baby’s 1st bday.
1:05 PM - Arrive at the party… what I thought was going to be just me, M, his wife, his mom, and his kid is actually them plus 6 other people hanging in the backyard. Not my favorite thing I’ve had to deal with this pandemic. Everyone is outside/masked. I learn that 2-3 of them have already been vaxxed but it’s still kind of a weird situation for me. I know if K was with me it would be bad news, so I am grateful he stayed behind today.
2:00 PM - Hightail it outta there once 4 more people show up. Listen to music really loud in the car and scream some lyrics on my way home. Feels good man.
2:45 PM - Continue listening to tunes at home, digging thru my Spotify discover weekly for the first time in a while and building a set that I want to record sometime next week.
3:15 PM - K’s brother and wife stop by and we do an outside masked hang with them for about an hour and a half. We haven’t seen them since December of 2019 so this is really really great.
6:00 PM - K and I keep talking about getting takeout but nothing sounds good so we just decide to do veggie sandwiches and potatoes. Drink wine.
7:00 PM - I decide to work on my tax stuff all evening instead of exercising. It takes 2 hours but I get all of my stuff together and send it to the guy. Pour myself a celebratory glass of wine after.
10:00 PM - K and I watch Beverly Hills Ninja in bed. I’d never seen it before and it was so good.
DAY THIRTY-EIGHT TOTAL: $0
DAY THIRTY-NINE
8:00 AM - Chemex. Pure barre weekly charge. $15
10:00 AM - A local bar down the street has been closed since March and a pal posts a GFM on their behalf. I donate to it. Eat a banana and a clementine $50
11:30 AM - Prep salad for the week - greens, gochujang tempeh, miso dressing, soba noodles, snap peas, carrots, and cucumber. Finish about 2 minutes before a call and I’m scrambling to appear composed.
5:30 PM - Do a pure barre livestream while K runs to go pick up dinner from a local vegan spot. K gets a fried chicken seitan sandwich and I get a burger. It’s really really delicious and I’m super stuffed after.
DAY THIRTY-NINE TOTAL: $65
DAY FORTY
8:30 AM - Chemex. Work is still kind of wild but I make a lot of progress on my report this AM so I’m feelin’ good there.
9:30 AM - Banana and clementine.
12:00 PM - Salad.
4:30 PM - Try to do a PB live stream (my 250th class) but Zoom’s server is being weird so I do a 30 min Peloton ride instead with a 5 min stretch.
6:00 PM - Veggie sandwiches with potatoes for din again.
8:00 PM - A friend from highschool, N, and I chat and it’s really really great. I drink 2 glasses of wine while we catch up.
DAY FORTY TOTAL: $0
DAY FORTY-ONE
8:30 AM - Oof my quads are sore. Make a chemex.
10:00 AM - Eat a banana.
11:00 AM - We’ve been dragging on the KN95 thing but decide to go for it today. Buy a pack of 50 in assorted colors, some Healthy Blood iron from Garden of Life, and poop bags for the dog. (Counting this expense as “home”) $98.04
12:00 PM - Spend time doing an analysis that doesn’t really tell me much but it was worth looking into. Eat gochujang tempeh salad
2:00 PM - I have a zoom scheduled with a work pal who I haven’t seen in forever. She tells me (much like the few others) that we qualify for the vaccine. I decide to make the appointment based on her feedback and after 40 minutes of messing with the system was able to get in on Feb 19.
5:00 PM - Take my 250th Pure Barre class! I am sweaty and it’s great.
6:45 PM - K isn’t really hungry so I eat the last of the red lentil soup.
7:30 PM - We have plans to see a friend in town from Ohio. Meet up with him at his hotel and sit on the front patio masked up for a while. I am mostly cold and have to pee.
9:45 PM - We arrive back home. I snack on a few pretzels, drink a glass of wine, eat some grapes and some dark chocolate.
DAY FORTY-ONE TOTAL: $98.04
DAY FORTY-TWO
8:30 AM - Chemex. My allergies are bad this AM. Send emails out - looks like my tax return is going to give me $1200 but then I owe $200 on my state. I always owe on state. One day… Also send a note to the loan guy who says I’m definitely going to close tomorrow at 8AM so we shall see.
10:30 AM - Tax invoice comes in. $220
11:00 AM - Boil some more soba noodles for salads. I’m basically going to be in meetings until 4:30 PM today so I’m trying to get ahead of all my stuff. Also do a check for all of the house painting things that came over the past week. Looks like it’s all here and I can start painting this weekend!
12:00 PM - Make salad in between calls and crack open a La Croix.
4:30 PM - My calls are done, do a 10 minute Peloton climb ride and then do a Pure Barre stream.
8:00 PM - Eat the last of the veggie sandwiches for dinner. Drink 2 glasses of wine and some dark chocolate. Something about tonight is off in my brain. I don’t have the capacity to be productive so I just watch episodes of The Challenge on my laptop while K plays Rocket League.
DAY FORTY-TWO TOTAL: $220
MST3K Turkey Day: The Long History of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Thanksgiving
https://ift.tt/3l4KHUl
Sometimes a long-running TV show finds itself linked to a certain holiday. Community had Christmas. The Simpsons has Halloween. Brooklyn 99 had Halloween, then changed it to Cinco de Mayo for scheduling reasons. Saturday Night Live has…Election Day, I guess? I probably should have thought this through a bit more.
While Mystery Science Theater 3000 has done a handful of Christmas-themed episodes (one major one per host, at least), the series has a much deeper relationship with Thanksgiving. Turkey Day is essentially its legacy. It started on Thanksgiving and it always comes back to that one Thursday in late November, whether the show is on the air or not.
Back in 1988, Joel Hodgson created a new show idea inspired by a random image from the liner notes of an Elton John album, wherein a couple of silhouettes sit in front of a movie screen. He and some robot puppets would watch bad movies and crack jokes. While the 15-minute proof of concept footage of him watching The Green Slime never made it to air, the world would be introduced to Mystery Science Theater 3000 on November 24 as he and Crow (here voiced by J. Elvis Weinstein) sat through Invaders from the Deep.
Well, only a very small piece of the world would be introduced. The show aired on KTMA-TV in Minnesota. Regardless, the first time MST3K hit the airwaves, it was Thanksgiving night.
The episode – and really the entire KTMA-TV season – wasn’t great. The idea was there, but they hadn’t come close to hitting its potential. It still found an audience and about a year later, it was airing on the Comedy Channel. That first season, which had Joel Hodgson as Joel Robinson, Weinstein as Tom Servo, and Trace Beaulieu as Crow T. Robot, was also pretty rough. It wasn’t until the second and third seasons (where Kevin Murphy had taken over the Servo role) that MST3K really started to find its footing.
On November 28, 1991, to celebrate MST3K’s third anniversary, Comedy Central put together the very first Turkey Day marathon. Starting at midnight and ending at 6 AM on the following day (!), they would air fifteen episodes in a row, accompanied by various Thanksgiving-based bumpers and sketches.
Keep in mind, this was long before the days of The Daily Show and South Park, so Comedy Central’s pool of popular shows wasn’t the deepest. This was back when you’d turn on the channel in the middle of the day and see episodes of Soap or some ’80s movie about a mime joining a ninja academy. No really, that was a thing. They played it all the time.
In 1992, they kicked up Turkey Day a notch. While still a 15-episode marathon, it started on Wednesday, November 25 at 6 PM with the debut showing of The Beatniks. By the time they reached the home stretch at 10 PM on Thanksgiving night, they played the episode premiere for Fire Maidens of Outer Space. At midnight, to finish things off, a half-hour special called This is MST3K was aired.
They kept many of the bumpers from the first Turkey Day, added some more, and each episode was introduced with a segment where Dr. Forrester would force-feed TV’s Frank some kind of turkey dish themed to the featured movie.
1993 went even bigger by adding one more episode to the marathon, making the whole thing 32 hours long. This time, the framing bumpers took the form of clips from a party that an MST3K fan won via contest. Initially, Comedy Central wanted the guys from the show to put together some segments with a tiny budget, but it was probably for the better that they didn’t. By the time Turkey Day ’93 aired, Mike Nelson had taken over for Joel as the show’s host and that major transition was still less than a month old.
This time the marathon went from 6pm on November 24 to 2am on November 26. At 10pm on Thanksgiving night, they premiered the episode featuring Beginning of the End.
The next year’s special episode premieres were Kitten with a Whip (starting the marathon) and Zombie Nightmare (ending it). Using Zombie Nightmare worked out perfectly because that movie’s antagonist was played by none other than Adam West and who better to host the Turkey Day segments? Though in retrospect, Adam West was pretty much everywhere in the mid-90s, so it wasn’t the biggest deal ever.
Still, it was nice and even featured appearances from other MST3K targets like Robert Vaughn, Beverly Garland, and Mamie Van Doren. The main focus was Adam West cooking turkeys themed to each episode and delighting us with his smooth, tryptophan-laced voice.
The 1995 edition (officially called “MST3K Anthology” despite still airing on Thanksgiving) existed to debut the seventh season of the show, known for its meager six episodes. As Comedy Central was losing interest in the series, the marathon was shortened to fifteen hours. It also featured a rare inclusion of a Season 1 episode, The Crawling Hand.
What made MST3K Anthology so memorable was not that it was the last hurrah for Comedy Central’s annual marathons or the shortened string of episodes. It was for the premiere of Episode 701, Night of the Blood Beast and the interesting way that episode was handled. Throughout the marathon, episodes would be introduced via Dr. Forrester being forced to host an impromptu Thanksgiving party with guests including preexisting characters Jack Perkins (Mike Nelson), Mr. B Natural (Bridget Nelson), Pitch (Paul Chaplin), Kitten with a Whip (Kevin Murphy), and Michael Feinstein (also Mike Nelson). This led to the airing of Night of the Blood Beast, where not only were the host segments based on celebrating Thanksgiving, but it was shown that Forrester’s Thanksgiving party was still going on.
In later airings of that episode, the host segments were completely different and had zero connection to Thanksgiving. Everything inside the theater remained the same. They just took a holiday-themed episode and made it run-of-the-mill for the sake of easier reruns. The host segments from the MST3K Anthology version of Night of the Blood Beast are available as extras on various DVD releases.
MST3K would spend three seasons on the Sci-Fi Channel, but would only get one Thanksgiving marathon, taking place in 1997. Even then, it was a bit half-assed. The marathon aired from 7:30am on November 27 to 4am on November 28, but with a six-hour break in the middle to play a couple of Star Wars movies. It also lacked any special flavor to it, foregoing any special bumpers or segments. No episode premieres. Just a handful of Sci-Fi era episodes and a lengthy Star Wars break.
Then it was sixteen years of silence. MST3K was cancelled after its tenth season in 1999. Those involved in the show mostly split into two teams. Some followed Joel as he started his new venture Cinematic Titanic. Others followed Mike, whose failed series The Film Crew was followed by the much more successful RiffTrax. That left MST3K rights owner Jim Mallon, who tried to move forward with an animated web series starring the robots and…the less said about it the better.
Joel was seeing enough money coming to him from DVD sales to realize that despite being cancelled a long time ago, there were still people wanting MST3K. With a 25-year anniversary DVD set coming out, Joel decided to promote it with the return of Turkey Day. Turkey Day ’13 featured Joel introducing the six most popular episodes of the show, which he’d also give hints about ahead of time. Streamed online, the special ended with him at the dinner table with Servo and Crow, causing speculation amongst the fans.
There was more speculation a year later when Turkey Day ’14 had the two bots regularly appear during the host segments, voiced once again by J. Elvis Weinstein and Trace Beaulieu. There would also be segments of Joel, Trace, and Frank Conniff sitting back and reminiscing about the history of this MST3K/Thanksgiving connection.
While riding the wave of the previous year’s success, this installment of Turkey Day was also promoting a DVD set Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Turkey Day Collection. The set mainly featured four random episodes (Jungle Goddess, Painted Hills, Screaming Skull, and Squirm), but with Servo and Crow hosting intro segments to give it the illusion of a Turkey Day marathon.
By early November of 2015, shit had hit the fan. Joel had bought the rights to MST3K from Mallon and started up a Kickstarter to raise money for new episodes. Wouldn’t you know it, Turkey Day ’15 happened right during said Kickstarter. The theme of the marathon was mostly Joel hanging out with different Kickstarter employees, but it also had newly-announced Season 11 host Jonah Ray Skype his way into the broadcast to introduce one of the episodes.
The following year was pretty chill, all things considered. The new season hadn’t started yet, but it was very much on the way. Just not far along enough to show us any clips or give us any juicy news. Joel and Jonah casually hosted the six most popular episodes as polled by the fans. Nothing too crazy.
The chillness continued in 2017. This time, things were hosted by Joel, Jonah, and Felicia Day. Things seemed pedestrian with another six episodes being streamed online, but there were two important things about this marathon.
First off, everyone realized that Joel’s arms are beefier than expected, netting him the nickname Swole Hodgson.
Second, after it seemed like they were off the air, it bounced back with a special announcement that – yes, Virginia – MST3K was coming back for a twelfth season on Netflix! It’s a Turkey Day miracle! Happy Thanksgiving, you ol’ savings and loan!
Turkey Day ’18 was a bit complicated. Rather than air on Thanksgiving, the marathon streamed on the Sunday prior, once again hosted by Joel and Jonah. What made it special was that Netflix had allowed them to include the Season 11 instant classic Cry Wilderness. As for why they didn’t air the Turkey Day marathon on actual Turkey Day?
Well, Thanksgiving was when MST3K’s twelfth season debuted all at once on Netflix. Also known as MST3K: The Gauntlet, the six-episode season was based around the idea of binging the whole thing in one day. Kind of like what MST3K fans have been using Thanksgiving for for many years. While it wasn’t on the exact date as the first KTMA-TV episode in 1988, both that debut and this debut happened on the same holiday and that’s good enough as a way to celebrate the show’s 30-year anniversary.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
Unfortunately, much like the Comedy Central days, having a season of only six episodes was a bad omen. Merely a day before Thanksgiving 2019, it was announced that Netflix had canceled the show. The jerks. Any hope that Turkey Day ’19 was going to include some kind of announcement about a thirteenth season was immediately crushed and murdered like it was one of the Brute Man’s victims.
That said, the marathon that year did feature segments filmed behind-the-scenes at the third MST3K live tour. In a pre-COVID time, this was how Joel and the rest intended to keep MST3K in the minds of the public until the Netflix contract runs out and they can search out new outlets.
Up next is Turkey Day ’20. Right now, details are a little scarce, but they are figuring out the six movies via fan votes. A tournament of 24 episodes has been set up on MST3K.org, though I’m not quite sure how a tournament leads to six winners instead of just the one.
August Highlighted Member of the Month... KRISTEN BUNK
Tumblr media
Name- Kristen Bunk
Hometown- Lancaster County, Manheim Township PA
Occupation- Administrative Assistant at W.L. Gore
Gym member (how long) - 1 year
Sports (growing up/now)-   Softball & field hockey
Hobbies- hiking, reading, watching my kids play lacrosse (which tends to take over the other two)
Favorite Holiday- I love Christmas!  It starts the day after Thanksgiving in our house with putting up decorations and taking a trip out to Herr's to see the lights.  We put up the artificial tree in the family room and then a few weeks later go cut down the real tree for the living room.  My immediate family and husband's family always go to Strasburg to ride the train with Santa and this year will be our 11th year.  Two years ago we thought we would stop, but the two teenagers were the ones that said it was tradition and we had to go.  We also have my son's birthday the week before Christmas, so it's just a fun time of year.
Favorite Movie- Sweet Home Alabama - I have seen it a million times and my family just roles their eyes at me if they see me watching it.
Favorite Song- There are so many, we always have music playing in our house.  My favorites are the ones that take me back to special memories, Brandy; Looking Glass, Young; Kenny Chesney, Ain't no mountain high enough; Marvin Gaye & Tammy Terrell; To feel my love; Garth Brooks, Hooked on a feeling; Blue Swede
If you could have a super hero power- It's not really a super hero power, but I would love to have the nose twitch thing Samantha had on Bewitched.  I want to just walk in the house and twitch my nose and bam, it's spotless!
If you could play a professional sport- Baseball - I played softball from 3rd grade straight through my first year of college and would sit for hours watching the Phillies with my grandfather.
Favorite Kids show growing up? Silver Spoons and Growing Pains
Most proud moment at the gym? Completing Murph.  It really made me nervous when I found out what it was and I was not going to do it, but I'm glad the peer pressure to do it got me, because I survived and accomplished one more thing I never thought I would ever attempt.
Fitness Goals Long Term & Life Goals: I want to continue to be healthy and strong for myself and my family.  My hope is that I am setting a good example for my kids that exercise is an important part of a healthy life style and doesn't end once you play your last game in high school or college.
2019 Fitness Goals- To have Lissy's arms, Haley's abs, Allison T's mental toughness, Bridget's drive…Seriously though, to have those attributes I want/need to continue to master the movements I struggle with and to work on my mental toughness.  Right now pull ups are one of the thorns in my side, I tend to 'rest' in workouts too long and I overthink things.
What were your thoughts after participating in the open this year?  Wow, what the hell did I just do!  It was a great experience and a frustrating experience all in one and tested my mental toughness.  I had a love hate with 19.2, because I was literally finishing my last squat clean when time ran out and I didn't get to advance to the next round.  I loved my team and all of the pushing everyone gave each other every week.  I am an introverted person and tend not to step out of my comfort zone, so all of the extra team activities, cheering all participants on and hanging out after the workouts helped me get to know a few more people and push me outside of my box.  It sucked that I had been in a car accident the week before the open started, but I was able to make it through and am looking forward to being healthy next year.
What motivates you at the gym?  Everyone! It's exciting to be in the gym when someone hits a new PR or to watch someone who has been struggling with a move or a certain weight now do it effortlessly.  I do have a competitive nature, but need targets to help drive me there.  The partner workouts are great for me because it pushes me to keep going, so that I don't let my partner down.  I like that we as a community don't just come in and workout, but we have these bigger events throughout the year that we work towards and it keeps me motivated to keep coming back, because it's not the same old workout.
Something/Someone that Inspired(s) you at the gym- All our wonderful mommies that recently had their babies.  To watch them over their pregnancy come into the gym consistently and kill it, even participating in the open, was just awesome.
Favorite (specific) wod we have ever done- I liked the one we just did recently, Clean & Jerks & Synchronized Bar Facing Burpees for time with a partner.
Least favorite wod: anything involving the bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One thing most people don’t know about you- I'm terrified to drive over bridges.  When we were looking for a house we had to stay on this side of the canal, because I couldn't drive over the bridge everyday by myself.  If I'm not driving I have to close my eyes and look down and the driver needs to be in a middle lane if there is one. If I'm driving I try to avoid them as much as humanly possible, but have managed to white knuckle, sweat dripping, get over a few.  I have been on the Bay Bridge only twice in my life and had a major panic attack one of the times, thankfully not the driver.  It's a height thing and a fear of ending up in the water and not being able to get the kids and myself out.
What is a guilty pleasure you have?  Trash TV, I love vegging to the Housewives (OC, Beverly Hills, NY) and Southern Charm.
Somewhere you would love to travel to? I would love to go to Australia and Alaska.
Favorite Beverage: I'm boring and on a daily basis only drink water, but I do love a glass of wine or a few margaritas.
Something that is silly you can’t live without- Gummy Bears and only Haribo, I have an issue.
Favorite Gym memory- It wasn't in the gym, but participating in Spartan for the first time with my son and having everyone in the community give me pushes along the race to keep going.  Cameron and I love to watch American Ninja Warrior and Spartan together and last year when Barbie posted a video of her climbing the wall, I thought I would like to try that.  Well that lead to me joining the gym at the end of July and Niki convincing me a few weeks later to sign up for Spartan.  Cam and I are both signed up to run again this year!
Favorite Lift/Skill/Movement in the gym- Squat clean, burpees (who says that?)
Name a pet peeve of yours- Clutter!!!
Design the perfect wod- Something with rowing, sit-ups, pushups, flipping tires, pulling sleds, climbing the wall
What would you tell someone that is thinking of joining our gym? Come & check out a boot camp!  Start there and get hooked, then jump into another class.  It doesn't matter your age and you don't need to be in shape to start out.  There are a wide range of fitness levels and ages at the gym and nobody ever makes you feel like you shouldn't be there.  The community is a friendly and encouraging environment!  A year in and most times I still don't have a clue what I'm doing, but there is always someone to ask or help show me.  I have grown a lot this last year and have done things I never thought I would start doing in my 40's.
Making It To 34
Chris Farley died at the age of 33. It was an untimely end to a comedian whose energy knew no bounds. He died at the same age as his hero, John Belushi. Both died of an overdose. It’s clear that Farley lived his life with the same excess that was present in him as a performer.
Saturday Night Live has had an influence over every generation of comedians since its inception. Every comedian has had a cast that they watched religiously. For me, that cast was the one championed by Farley. It shouldn’t be a surprise that this cast was filled with a slew of stand-up comedians ranging from Adam Sandler to David Spade to Norm MacDonald. That speaks volumes to the kind of comedy that I enjoy and create even whenever I may do sketch comedy and even though this was considered a bad era for SNL by critics.
Tumblr media
Farley was the poster child for many things. First and foremost, he was the 90s example of great physical comedy more so even in my mind than the multimillionaire film comedian that Jim Carrey had emerged into. Farley could just make everyone laugh with his physicality and his genuine nature that I’ve found only comparable perhaps to Rowan Atkinson or John Ritter. But Farley was also the poster child for excess in both life and in comedy. He was the poster child for not being able to separate the addiction from the artist. He was also the poster child for many comedians to have a desire to die young.
As a comedian in his early 20s, I remember feeling similar to Farley. I had finished reading The Chris Farley Show and ended up feeling devastated and depressed by the end of it. It emotionally affected me. How could it not when it was someone whose ability you were in awe of and who influenced why you even pursue such a strange passion? I wondered that if this kind of life could happen to Farley, what chance did I have? I remember drinking a whole bottle of wine that night while at a friend’s party and vomiting outside of his house. I mumbled nonsense about Farley and comedy. No one thought anything of it. We were young. It was on a street on Ohio State’s campus. I was likely one of hundreds vomiting on someone’s patio on that Saturday night.
I turned 34 this year. On one hand, it’s no accomplishment. On the other hand, when you’re a comedian who looked up to Chris Farley or who looked up to the many troubled individuals in comedy’s history, it might be the biggest accomplishment possible. Maybe I wasn’t remotely as physical of a comedian nor ever will be nor as large and in command as Farley, but it doesn’t mean that I still didn’t relate to him or wish to embody him. I certainly shoved enough junk food and alcohol into my body in my 20s to deal with my problems.
Unlike an era that saw Chris Farley die maybe because he even wanted to die, we’re slowly but surely addressing mental health and addiction in better ways. We’re at least doing it better because we don’t see a problem with it and we identify the silver linings to it all. Farley likely wanted to die young. So did I on many nights in my 20s.
But, now at 34, now at an age where I have become older and eclipsed the amount of life of Farley and many of the comedians I looked up to, I can see how stupid it would have been to have ended it all far too early. The other night, I randomly saw this video of Farley on Leno. He was promoting Beverly Hills Ninja but it was so clear he was also riddled with his addictions. It was more sad than funny particularly knowing he would be dead in less than a year.
youtube
Life is worth more than comedy, than sadness, than addiction. I’m thankful I grew to realize that. I’m thankful to be 34.
As the year concludes, I’ve decided that this is the final essay that I will write in this Tumblr. I started writing these kinds of essays in 2014 mostly on a whim. I had written a couple essays on Facebook that had gotten appreciation and so I felt like this was a good avenue to just get some perspective out when needed.
Over the past four years, the appreciation has continued and I’m grateful for it. I’ve received everything from comments on social media to random emails from strangers and fellow comedians across the country. It was clearly a helpful avenue to many ranging from aspects to the business of comedy to being a platform for promotion of my album to being the place where I opened up about giving up drinking.
But all things must come to an end. Whether you want to believe it or not, a lot of time and effort goes into conceiving and writing these essays. It’s time that I’d prefer to invest in other projects and writing pursuits going forward. I think that comedy, via social media and podcasts, have enough people weighing in with their opinions. I’d prefer to focus in on creating comedy and not really invest the time into examining the landscape of comedy anymore. This Tumblr managed to do that for what I think was enough time. All these essays will remain out there for others to read and encounter in the future and the door is always open for people to continue to contact me about comedy, about depression, or even about Dick Pussy T-shirts!
To anyone who has ever read any of these, thank you. All the best and keep on laughing.
