Since my mental health has been getting so much better lately, I'm honestly super excited for 2024. I'm not gonna prematurely say "2024 is my year" but I'm definitely excited to see where I'm going from here, since it definitely seems like there's nowhere to go but up.

hollow knight detail #1,437 that makes my brain whirr like an overheated laptop:

the NPC names and boss titles in hollow knight display in a way that strongly implies they are being written from the knight's perspective -- NPC titles only appear once the NPC tells you their name; boss titles are usually loose descriptors or obvious titles unless you already know them; dream boss titles change in ways reflective of what the player (and by extension the knight) has learned about them; title changes seem to be very rooted in the knight's perspective ('broken vessel' -> 'lost kin' yeah but also shit like 'millibelle' -> 'millibelle the thief') -- and hornet never introduces herself by name.

#hollow knight #hornet (hollow knight)#not art #hornet #LIKE on one hand hornet is such a core early boss fight and lore character this could be early development weirdness #maybe she had old dialogue where she did introduce herself and TC just for whatever reason didn't update her boss titles when it was cut #maybe it was an artifact of older/different sensibilities with how the game handled boss titles in general #and making the boss names more knight-POV-specific was a later change and TC just couldn't find a good moment for hornet to give her name #but didn't want to leave you not knowing who she was so they left it in #but like. hollow knight is a game with so much attention to detail and so many of the other boss titles have Implications #about how the knight sees the world around them #its hard to think of another in universe explanation for this choice than 'the knight somehow already knew hornet by name'#also side note i literally cannot find a single piece of dialogue where any other character refers to Hornet by name which is. just a little blog update! you might have noticed i haven't been posting as much writing lately... well, to be honest i've been struggling to find the motivation to write. i want to, but it feels like my skills have gotten... idk, worse? even now that i have time, it's like nothing i write is good enough, so i never end up finishing and posting anything. in other words my creative juices have run dry :(

deeply enjoy that the novel can also be read as a commentary on the fallacy of information. we have zzs as the main narrator who adds to this nuance by being a former spymaster and leader of a bunch of proficient investigators. hes very intimate with the process of verification of information, and even his vast databank of knowledge and his abilities of filtering and sorting the "true" from the "fake" is tested throughout the novel through many instances and events. its especially interesting because he makes a major mistake, almost from the very start, that he resolves only after a very long time, and only after overcoming personal weaknesses. his personal weakness at recognizing truth vs decept reveals itself in the inability to meet personal events with a human perspective; he is basically functioning like a person with two lives, and most of the time, he at least acts as if he is regarding wkx, suspected master of ghosts, from the professional business grounds of the retired leader of shadows rather than from the perspective of a person with an adventurous life and wishes of his own. in this lies the danger to misinterpret and to refuse to confront what is truly going on. if zzs cant 'find' the "true reason" for the ghost master following his humble retired self, he is going to do his utmost to make up one (on the basis of his personal and professional experience with such situations), instead of considering at least once the admittedly unlikely chance that wkx might like him and is even deeply sincere about him. this doesnt signal anything less but that we, as the reader, should not irrevocably trust even the one person who is in most stories the most trustworthy; the main narrator. instead, we are advised to reserve us the right to doubt and think for ourself, to look critically upon even zzs, which only circles back to the novel's theme of the fallacy of information. it even lends to the novel's dialogue with the human right to form your own opinion and your own thoughts and come to your own conclusions, no matter how much they might diverge from norm or mainstream or traditions, and no matter how tempting it might be not to.

Lineup of all of the characters that appear long enough to need a visual representation of them in the game lol

#I added a few people that you can randomly run into around town (like at the inn or in the forest or etc) and have very short conversations #with just to kind of flesh out the world a little more in a more natural-ish seeming way. Like nobody in the main cast would really #have much reason to talk about the actual city you're in or anything. Since most of them havent lived there that long anyway.#But if there's a ''city inspector'' that you can run into whilst he's writing up notes examining the local inn. then maybe there could be a #few dialogue options with him where you can ask about things like that. since he would know more about the area as an offical Government #Worker or etc. Optional of course. since I have to be so wary of my natural inclination to lore dump lol and am trying extra hard to make i #all stuff thats easily avoided/skipped. But for the people like ME who deliberately choose to exhaust every possible optional dialogue #option and explore every single inch of the world and try to collect as much information as possible - then there are a few extra places to #do that. Though obviously not all of them just give exposition for like 15 paragraphs blandly. Some you don't really learn anything from #and it's kind of just.. random flavor to make the non-shop map locations more ''lived in'' feeling. Like the random #little girl you can talk to in the park doesn't bizarrely start reading out the wikipedia description of some War that happened 10 years ag #or whatever. she's just complains about school a little and asks if you've tried the nearby ice cream cart treats and etc lol #ANYWAY..#some of the art is so so evil but I'm not going to spend 800 years trying to clean it up and update it. whatever the hell mess I sketched #out in 2018 or whatever is just what I'm keeping lol... it is what it is #One of the many trials of the whole 'briefly work a few months on something and then abandon it almost entirely only to pick up work #on it literally like 4 - 5 yrs later and now you must contend with trying to decipher whatever weird shit you did years ago' experience lol #Also given the population breakdowns of the world in general I think there's an unrealistic amount of jhevona in this lineup since #they're a much rarer species to just see out and about anywhere but.. it IS a global trading center type area. and the game #takes place in the north (the country of Asen. near the coast. for the maybe 2 or less people who actually keep up with my worldbuilding #enough to know where that is lol (the same continent as Navyete (where the avirre'thel live)) and there's a decent concentration #of nothern jhevona only a short ways away so... tee hee..I shall pretend it makes sense and not merely me just wanting #to represent more of that species because I think their lore is interesting lol #I MEAN also realistically there would NOT be a human here because humans are extremely isolated species that don't even know the rest #of the world exists really and human territories are extremely protected from the outside world but... of course it's like.. well we need #at least One of them to be there for the Optional Lore. Same with the Ythrili. But at least those are like.. PLAUSIBLE.. not nonsensically #outlandish. If I had a Verrucalt or something in there THEN that would be truly lore-breaking almost lol #ANYWAY.. rambling that only means anything to me because nobody else knows what I'm even referencing but hbjh #also I think my character designs are so funny in the sense that I really do just love to do the same thing over and over again ghbjh #wow... random asymmetry and belts and arm straps and high collars where the neck is completely covered?? you dont say..how novel

Religiously i think about one of my twitter mutuals pointing out how aoki's design is subtly asymmetrical while ichiban is more symmetrical

when i think of it, masato's design is fairly symmetrical as well isnt it.....

#snap chats #please no one look at me i shouldve gotten my drink two hours ago #what does it mean .....#i swear my mutual had like. galaxy brain when it came to aoki i swear to god in heaven no one got him like they did #they were also the one that did that glass analysis post i shared some months back #moving on tho...#i guess there is the stipulation that because masato's shirt buttons dont match his shirt like ichi's does the buttons at the top mess it u #but aside from that everything else is pretty even: he has a pair of bangs and while his shirt is patterned its not like. grossly so #the pattern doesnt go particularly one way or the other its obviously just a pattern and the colors arent offensively against each other #on the flipside aoki's hair is more obviously swept to one side and leaving the other side bare #not to mention his tie in general. the 'bulb' part and 'tongue' part even go against each other #as if a diagonal striped tie itself wouldnt be askew to his overall look #again these are very small things to notice but im glad theyre small- it makes sense for a politician's to be subtly incongruent #the glasses are super important to aoki's design too but that's covered int eh glass analysis and isnt about symmetry #idk ... maybe im just waffling on about nothing.. either way i love those posts by my mutual #OH i think of this because i am once again thinking of updating how i draw masato #cause i like the blazer and necklace i gave him BECAUSE of that asymmetry #but now i wonder if thatd go against his design ... so i have to ask 'what underlying message is there for masato to be symmetrical'#i guess- even if he is a creep and a weirdo- he's not. evil? idk ... he hasn't gone totally off the deep end compared to aoki #like compared to what he'd go on to do as aoki he's pretty normal as masato #he is just a guy. who DOES have ties to the yakuza but this aint about that LKCJALKREJVA #he doesnt even like them he just uses them for his convenience 😔#idk. ill prob still draw masato the same tbh LMAO if anything ill just crop his blazer but keep it symmetrical #i guess i cant wonder this TOO much when i give him mismatching rings 💀💀 ill just have fun ig fjaelrvekljv #at the end of the day its never that serious ...... i just gotta draw what makes me chortle. esp for a chara three people care about VJLAEK #but i will wonder ..... <- it is not that deep #ima go bye
