sorry but modern AUs which depict harrowhark as incredibly goth or punk-looking just completely misunderstand harrow as a character. like, yes, aesthetically in the TLT context harrow has goth-like attributes. skull facepaint, bone earrings, etc, etc, i get it. but that's not counterculture for her! in fact, she dresses exactly how the revered daughter of the ninth house is expected to dress - down to the sacramentally shorn haircut.

which brings me to my main point. harrow's not a goth! she's a nun! she wouldn't be wearing chains and spikes, she would be wearing a full habit and a headscarf! she's a religious nun and she accidentally fell in love with lucifer. that's her aesthetic. she was raised in some deeply catholic cult somewhere in buttfuck nowhere and she carries a rosary everywhere she goes. there's your modern AU.

most fandoms are prone to reducing characters to consumable archetypes for the purposes or comedy (or shipping). but what’s amazing to me is that the atla fandom somehow not only reduces characters into stock tropes, but somehow manages to whittle them down into their exact opposites. aang’s whole deal is that he is a wise and prodigious monk who very deliberately represses the depth of his grief so as not to be crushed under the weight of it, and so naturally he is reduced into an oblivious, blissfully happy child. katara’s whole deal is that she yearns for joy and adventure and often reacts to situations before she’s thought through the consequences, so naturally she’s reduced to the overly-serious, sensible voice of reason. sokka’s whole deal is that he’s a miserable hater who’s way too smart for his own good and thus overthinks himself into a hole at every turn, so naturally he’s reduced to a wacky goofy idiot with no tact and no brain. toph’s whole deal is that she’s uniquely thoughtful and perceptive and waits and listens before acting, so naturally she’s reduced to an impulsive chaotic gremlin with all the emotional maturity of a sea cucumber. zuko’s whole deal is that he can’t read a room, has no filter, and loves to monologue, so naturally he’s reduced to a brooding stoic. iroh’s whole deal is that he is tormented by the sins of his past at all times, so naturally he’s reduced to everybody’s favorite perfect and unimpeachable old man. azula’s whole deal is that her undying loyalty and obedience to an egomaniac shall be her undoing, so naturally she’s reduced to a selfish and hysterical woman who just does whatever the fuck she wants because she’s ontologically evil i guess. ty lee’s whole deal is that she is constantly performing, so naturally people always just take her at face value. i could go on. but i think you get my point.

I love Raph and haven’t said that enough so to be more specific I love that Raph is a soft boy who loves bear plushies, a gross boy who eats an assortment of things that are definitely better left alone, a smart boy who is more than capable of taking down villains through planning and fortitude alike, a strong boy who is dedicated to training his muscles and fighting prowess, a teenage boy who loves his brothers but is more than happy to tease and roughhouse with them, an angry boy who sometimes lets his anger take a hold of him to cover the fear, a gentle boy who is generous with hugs and affirmations to those he loves, a capable boy who takes on more than should ever be expected of a teenager, a good boy who just wants to be a hero and slowly comes to realize the cost of that duty, a good boy who has no reservations about putting himself in the way of harm coming to his family, a good boy who’s a great brother and son and person and deserves only the best the world has to offer.

it takes a really long time to unlearn but there's no such thing as "cheating" or "half-assing" being a person. if you need to leave the cabinet doors open, leave them open. microwave your tea. sit down in the shower. buy the eggmaker. use your phone to calculate tip.

it's mostly fake posterity rules. who cares if you microwave your dinners. who cares if you use instant coffee. who cares if you stop watching the show that got boring. we all have a different set of skills and a different life and taking care of yourself is fucking hard.

at the end of your life there will be no final scoreboard. nobody is going to judge you because you brushed your teeth in the shower. there will be no final count of the number of times you had the same meal five nights in a row. there will be no fanfare or party because you won at being a person - and no one will be disappointed that you never understood the point of using paper towels to dry your hands off after washing them.

yeah, in this world, people will put up a fuss. i've noticed some of the biggest fusses are over what you'll put in/on your body. the fact that i will regularly eat deli meat straight out of the bag makes a lot of people genuinely concerned for me. but here's the thing: sometimes that's the only way i'm getting any protein. my doctor says i am doing fine. i'm sticking to my weird snacks and calling it deconstructed charcuterie.

they'll say they're horrified because you take a shortcut. that's fine. it's just that it looks like a shortcut to them because they're on a different life path. these kinds of things stand out to them as important. that's fine too. but for you? you've got other things that already make you pretty hard working. and these tiny things - well, they're just clutter on your journey.
