Okay, so I think I’ve got a solid timeline of events for villain!Katsuki
Katsuki leaves UA just before the provisional license exam, he’s at the point where he no longer things the hero system can be fixed without outside intervention. He’s done with how the media acts, he’s done with the blame being shifted to victims based on their quirks, and he’s done with the lies he’s been fed all his life.
Prior to this he started researching and planning what actual change would look like and require.
He meets up with Dabi, who’d only let the rest of the league know about the bet a few days prior. He was curious if Katsuki would keep his word or not. Dabi prods Katsuki gently, saying he knew the kid took honestly seriously but he’s still kinda surprised to see him go this far over a bet. Katsuki replies explaining it’s more than the bet. He talks about what he’s seen, and the failure of hero society to change. It’s more than enough to convince Dabi.
Dabi brings him to a secure location, then relays information to Shigaraki. Shigaraki is hesitant, he’s surprised Katsuki came back to them, but when Katsuki explains his side of things, and with Dabi vouching for him, Shigaraki decides to let him in. He can understand what it’s like to fall for hero society. He did for awhile too. Katsuki just needed more time on his own to realize that.
There’s an introduction period, the league is still figuring themselves out and most of them are hesitant to trust Katsuki. It’s about a week before he’s properly reintroduced to everyone and gets the sense that they’re not headed in any particular direction.
After that week, Katsuki decides “fuck that, I’m going to do shit, y'all are coming along” and since Shigaraki doesn’t really have anything better in mind, he decides to go along with Katsuki’s plans.
UA started panicking as soon as they realized Katsuki was gone, but nobody really knows what happened to him yet. Since he took all his stuff with him, all signs point to him having run away.
Izuku refuses to believe that, and most of the class holds out hope for awhile, but as no evidence turns up, more of them start to think it might be true and start discovering the amount of harassment and guilt he was facing.
There’s about a month and a half period in which Katsuki focuses on getting the league in shape. During this period, they do a forcible take over of the Shie Hassaikai.
Overhaul is killed, Eri goes under Katsuki’s care, and the league is established as a much more powerful force.
The Hero Commission is starting to get nervous, but not overly so. Not yet.
After this month and a half, Katsuki makes his first public appearance as a villain.
He’s in an updated version of his costume, most of it has stayed the same, but he’s added what looks like muzzle to the costume that covers his mouth. The muzzle actually functions as face shield/oxygen system so he can move at much faster speeds safely.
Katsuki’s villain debut is a full scale attack by the league on the Hero Commission directly. An event meant that the Hero Commission had gathered in a relatively accessible location, and the villains take advantage.
Importantly, Katsuki is enforcing a policy of limiting needless harm or deaths, because it ruins their message. The league reluctantly agrees, so they’re being a bit more careful than they were before. However, they’ve still got a hit list for this party.
The list consists of officials who they have confirmation deliberately manipulated polices or actions of heroes at the cost of people’s lives, all for some private gain. They do a lot of damage, and manage to kill 7 people on their list.
Katsuki’s first kill happens here. Previously, he’d managed to defeat Overhaul, but wasn’t quite able to kill him. He just wasn’t ready.
Shigaraki took care of it for him, and told him it was fine if he needed time to learn to kill. He was kind and understanding about it in a way that was genuinely weird to Katsuki. Not only because this was all about murder, but it was the first time in his life that he failed and an adult supported him rather than punishing him for his mistake.
At this event, one of the people he takes down tries to appeal to him by offering him a position as a hero to save themselves, and that pushes him over the line. He ends it quickly.
The league escape afterwards, and footage plus eyewitnesses confirm Katsuki was there, and he didn’t say a word to anyone he attacked.
UA, the Hero Commission, and the media collectively assume / sell the story of him having been brainwashed. It’s the only thing that doesn’t make them look horrible.
Aizawa has been weighed down by a lot of guilt during all of this. He should’ve done more, should’ve reached out, but he’d been waiting for Katsuki to come to him. He’s tried to find Katsuki, but Katsuki has purposefully avoided facing him in battle as Aizawa is one of the few people he doesn’t feel like he could hurt or allow one of the other villains to hurt.
The attacks start getting frequent over the course of another month, primarily targeting the people behind the scenes of the heroic’s system, with a lot of other targets of corruption along the way.
On his third attack, Katsuki has his first run in with Izuku, the first of any of his classmates to face him in battle.
Katsuki refuses to speak a word to him, despite the fact Izuku heard him giving directions to Toga, and the two clash.
Katsuki manages to pull ahead in their fight, but he’s distracted from their fight by someone caught in the crossfire. He diverts course to protect them. Izuku was so hyperfocused on Katsuki he didn’t notice the person. It throws him off enough that Katsuki is able to win their fight complete his goal.
After their clash, Izuku’s finally realized Katsuki isn’t brainwashed. Given what happened, he can only assume it really is Kacchan making all these choices, which leads him to reflect on why.
Between slowly uncovering what Katsuki was suffering through, and watching Katsuki’s actions and their very real impact, Izuku finds himself struggling with the idea of heroes as well. Most of Class 1-A and society as a whole really are.
Shouto & Izuku talk, and Izuku confirms that it really is Katsuki. Not a brainwashed version of him.
At the end of their conversation, Shouto assumes that because it’s really Katsuki, they’re gonna go join him. He defects, and is a bit surprised when Izuku doesn’t follow him right away.
Dabi almost has a heart attack over this, but he can’t really judge.
Shouto is accepted into the league after he and Katsuki talk and he apologizes for not having done anything. Katsuki doesn’t blame him for it, as he understands Shouto had no real sense of what was okay.
Eri gains a new older brother, and she could not be more delighted.
During this period, after the first attack, Hawks was sent in to infiltrate the league. Katsuki can smell the commission on him from a mile away, but tells Dabi to kind of let Hawks in anyways.
The league begins slowly working Hawks out of the Commissions control, before finally after about three months, Hawks realizes how shitty they are and defects properly.
A big part of this happens after Hawks finally comes to terms with the fact that Katsuki isn’t brainwashed, and after Hawks meets Eri and realizes how happy and safe she is with her new family vs how he felt at that age with the Commission.
By the end of that three months, a number of other class 1-A kids and a few kids from 1-B have dropped out of the hero course, or in some cases, UA entirely. The public at large has started to become more disconnected from the hero system as they start to see some of it’s major flaws. The Commission comes under more and more questioning and is seriously losing power.
During this same time, you’d expect to see an increase in crime, but you actually see the opposite.
Katsuki has been very careful and forged an alliance with the MLA such that they’ve been able to crack down on certain types of crime (domestic violence, quirk kidnappings, sexual assaults, etc) while also steadily funneling money into getting social services in theses areas.
This means that you start to see less crime, people feeling safer and more secure, even as the hero commission and system is crumbling.
All of this comes together after a year or two of solid in the form of the government submitting to a major reform driven by figure heads planted by the MLA, but only after the league manages to eliminate the last key figures standing in their way.
Since so many heroes have either fallen from grace, stepped back from the system, or been killed in certain cases, Izuku ended up as an unwilling symbol of peace due to his connection to Katsuki.
Izuku is tasked by what’s left of the heroics system with stopping Katsuki from killing the final major figure whose all that’s standing in the way of the reform.
Izuku, in the end, makes the active choice to step aside, giving Katsuki the key he was given to the room so Katsuki can get to the person to kill them.
Izuku finally decided that he’s had enough of this too, and he’s done defending a broken system based on ingrained ideals that don’t add up.
Aizawa is watching inside the room up in the rafters, he’s stayed a hero of sorts but still functions like he did before.
Inside the room, Aizawa had the chance to cancel Katsuki’s quirk and stop him from killing the person. Instead, he chose to close his eyes and let Katsuki go through with it.
Katsuki looks up to where Aizawa is once it’s done, and Aizawa realizes he knew he was there the entire time. He hops down out into the open and speaks plainly as he always did.
“I’m sorry.” Is all he can really say. There’s so much he’s sorry for. For not speaking up. For letting Katsuki be put through so much. For letting him be driven to this.
Katsuki looks at him for a long, long moment, before he finally looks away and shrugs his shoulders. For the very first time in years, he speaks to a hero. To the only hero who ever tried for him, even if it wasn’t enough.
“S'okay. The problem was bigger than you every could’ve fixed.”
“I should’ve tried. I should’ve done more.”
Again, Katsuki needs a moment to consider that.
“Yeah. Probably.”
There’s silence for a few moments, and then Katsuki’s radio crackles to life. Dabi’s calling him back.
They share one more glance, and Katsuki turns on his heel and walks out.
Aizawa watches him go. There’s nothing else for him to do. His right to change this story ended when he failed to speak up all those years ago.

Tumblr media
Her mother’s smile was big, teeth and all. Her crimson red lipstick made her skin look even paler, there was not a hint of color to be seen on her cheeks. Her mother had spent minutes in front of the mirror, pressing white powder on her cheeks. She believed a fairer look would make her appear younger, in her daughter’s eyes it just made her look terrifying. But that was also the reason behind her smile, it had to be big in order to cover all the lies that lied beneath the facade.
“Don’t feel pressured to start crying too, I doubt anyone is looking.” With her black hair, rosy cheeks, and bright green eyes, Ophelia Lancaster was nothing like her mother. Except for the fact that they both shared the same cold and icy tone while talking to each other. Her mother scoffed at Ophelia, but still, let her eyes flicker between the masses of people crowding the platform. Mrs. Seraphine Lancaster thrived of attention, therefore it suited her that the Lancaster family was one of the most well known in the wizarding world.
“Come on now girls, no fighting.” Like every other time, her father tried to calm them, his soothing voice, and the way he placed one of his hands on either of their shoulders, was his way of creating peace. Though it only worked sometimes, and that was usually in situations like this, when there were people everywhere.
“Is that the Cameron’s I see?” Her mother asked, slightly squinting her dark eyes. Her father followed her lead and adjusted his glasses to try and get a better look. “My dear, I believe it is.” Her mother clasped her hands together in delight, her heels made the most awful sound against the hard concrete as she started walking towards them. Her husband soon followed her lead, but stopped and turned around when he noticed that his daughter was not going with them.
“Uh yeah, I think I am gonna skip saying hi to them this time, I have to get a good seat.” Ophelia gave him the sweetest smile she could muster, her father looked between her and his wife. It was obvious that he was debating what he should say, he would either get the wrath from his wife or the disappointed looks from his only child.
“Oh okay then, have fun darling. Do not forget to write to us!” Ophelia rolled her eyes at that, during her five years at Hogwarts she had not forgotten to write even once. Every Sunday she would sit down in her bed, feather quill in one hand and a paper in the other. She would retell her whole week, leaving out minor details of course. She was not about to tell her parents about the parties she had been too or the dates she had gone on, some things could be left out with a guilt-free consciousness.
“I won’t, tell mom I said goodbye.” Her father opened his mouth to say something but when he did Ophelia was already gone, trudging through the masses of wizards and witches to try and finally get on the train. She passed countless students, some she recognized more than others.
“John B I don’t want to carry your-” The boy in front of her paused, looked at the owl in the cage he was holding with two fingers. And Ophelia could not really see, but from the way his body shivered, she assumed he was making a disgusted face.
“It’s a bird JJ, thank you very much.” The other boy snatched the cage from the boy standing in Ophelia’s way, muttering something about how this JJ always had to be so dramatic.
Ophelia pushed past them too, she just wanted to get on the train and find a good seat before all of them were taken by some snotty first years. But unfortunately for her, most of the good compartments were already filled by something worse, third-year students. They had gone past the phase of being terrified by the elder students, and they had also started to get to know how things worked at Hogwarts. So naturally, they had decided that they were superior. This was not true, they were just cocky because they were gonna start reading Defence Against the Dark Arts. As she watched them chatter and whisper through the glass, a small sigh escaped her lips. The third-year at Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry had been Ophelia’s best, she had aced all her classes and done that with friends by her side. But they had soon wandered a path she did not want to be a part of, therefore she now found herself sitting alone in an empty compartment that smelt like old feet. She did not necessarily miss her old friends, especially not when she saw what they were up to in the common room or how they jinxed people in the halls. No, Ophelia simply missed the laughs they had shared, the ones that make you clutch your stomach and gasp for air. She missed how they used to sneak out after curfew to discover more of Hogwarts, she sometimes found herself missing how Rafe Cameron had grasped her hand when they had been walking through a really badly lit corridor. But whenever those thoughts and memories resurfaced, she quickly did everything in her power to push them away.
With delicate fingers, she opened the leather bag that had been gifted to her from her late grandmother. It was one of her most prized possessions, her grandmother had been the only person in the Lancaster family that ever seemed to actually see Ophelia. And with her gone, Ophelia could only trace the embroidery on the bag and long for the day someone would once again, see her. She pulled out Voyages with Vampires by Gilderoy Lockhart from the bag, the man himself might have been a bit of a fool but his books were still entertaining. Therefore a content sigh left her lips as she turned over the first page, but before she could even read the first sentence, loud voices interrupted her.
“There is not one seat left, that’s what we get for JJ trying to flirt with some girl.” You recognized the voice, but without a face, it was difficult to figure out who it belonged too. But you had heard that name before, on the platform, and said boy also received complaints at that time.
“So what? I am just trying to have some fun.” This sentence resulted in a bunch of protests from whoever was standing outside the door, saying that girls were not just there for some “fun” as he had put it. Ophelia continued to watch the door, curious to see what faces would appear in the glass window. She was a bit taken aback when she locked eye contact with Sarah Cameron, not expecting her to be among those loud voices. Sarah quickly lit up, and a bright smile spread on her lips as she slid the door open.
“Ophelia, would you mind if we all sat here?” The blonde girl that Ophelia used to share all her secrets with when she was younger, gestured to the abundance of new yet familiar faces that stood behind her. She recognized the girl with curly brown hair, she was the Hufflepuff girl that put up posters and loudly argued for house-elves freedom. Next to her stood her trusty companion, the dark-skinned Ravenclaw whose hand was always reaching towards the ceiling when questions were asked during class.
Sarah grabbed one of the two lighter haired boys by the hand and dragged him towards a seat. “This is John B, you know the guy I always used to have a crush on in the first year?” Ophelia did know, Sarah used to gush about the boy with the long hair and freckled skin every time they saw each other. A lot had happened since, but apparently they had managed to find their way to each other.
“Yeah, I remember.” She answered, a little unsure of what to say, because what do you say to someone that you have not spoken to in ages? The sofa she was sitting on rocked a tiny bit when the other blonde-haired boy threw himself down next to her. His red-tinted robes were a bit messy like he had just thrown them on in a hurry, not at all caring that his tie was all crooked.
“Sarah, you gonna introduce me to this beautiful girl or what?” He flashed Ophelia a cheeky grin while she just rolled her eyes. “Aren’t you supposed to be a Gryffindor?” She asked while tilting her head to look at him.
“Yeah, why?” A small smile spread on her lips as she watched him furrow his brows in confusion. “Well, I thought they were supposed to be brave, and you are asking your friend to introduce us.” His friends snickered at that, watching and waiting for what he would answer. But he just looked at her, and then he leaned closer to her ear and whispered his name, JJ of course, he was the only one left. His voice was warm and it made her skin tingle, so naturally, she placed a hand on his shoulder and pushed him back.
“Was that brave enough for you, Ophelia Lancaster?” He made sure to emphasize every syllable in her name, proving that he had not needed an introduction after all. Once again she rolled her eyes at him and leaned back into the seat, this was definitely going to be a long ride.

flowers (still blooming)
Ace doesn’t know what his mother looks like. Makino met a woman twelve years ago.
(There are flowers in Rouge's hair.)
Read on AO3 for better quality!
--
Makino runs a bar – this is common knowledge to anyone who has ever visited Foosha.
She’s always behind the counter or at serving drinks, all with a kind smile and a laugh at hijinks. No one misbehaves, and there’s a shiny new gun behind the counter for any unwanted visitors.
(Rumor has it a pirate taught her how to shoot.)
She a barmaid and a bar tender and a bar owner – anything really. The Party Bar is her pride and joy.
And left over from her mother, a generation previous, it is her information hub as well.
People come in from all sorts of places for the taste of beers delivered directly by Vice Admiral hands and homebrews from the other side of the island. With them they bring stories, and tales, and wanted posters, secrets about criminals Makino has never known and praise for villains she never wants to meet. Alcohol loosens lips, and it’s an easy task to ask the right questions to get the right answers.
Makino’s smart. She knows the power she holds with all the information locked tight in her brain. She sends letters to Garp, sometimes, to warn about an upcoming raid on some poor island, and smiles at the news of the Hero of the Navy saving yet another place.
(She calls Shanks sometimes, to hear his voice, and to tell him that some upstart is planning on challenging him, to tell him that the Marines are planning some ambush but its only rookies, really, to tell him that she misses him and Luffy isn’t in Foosha much now a days, so can’t he come visit?
He doesn’t. But that’s okay.)
Wanted posters find their way onto the Party Bar’s walls, for one reason or another. A nice young man who tipped well, off to becoming a pirate, or a couple of scoundrels smacked down by Garp the Fist himself. Shanks is there, serious faced over a hefty bounty, with the rest of the crew smiling alongside him.
(A spot is reserved on the other wall for the bounty of three young to-be pirates – she can’t wait to see how high their bounties soar.)
It’s not often Makino looks through them, but then she meets Ace, whose face is so similar to one she has known before – one who smiled at her and gave her a hug when her mother didn’t bother paying attention to her.
Makino visit’s Luffy’s brothers, and cries, just a little bit, when she gets home.
Luffy is so happy but someone dear is gone.
-
Garp keeps secrets when he wants to but Makino knows how to get them out of him. A drop of knowledge here, a drink there, a smile, a private place with no prying ears, and the mention of grandsons is all it takes for the tears to well up in his eyes and for the words to spill out.
Ace, his first grandson’s name is, adopted or not, Portgas D. Ace –
All the information Makino wanted, really, but Garp keeps on talking –
Gol D. Ace, son of the Pirate King –
And Makino’s heart shatters.
(Like any bar, the Party Bar receives its fair share of unruly customers, those with cruel words on their tongues and hatred for people they have never met.
The Son of the King? They say, referring to the only king that ever really mattered. Hope he doesn’t exist! Should kill 'em if he does, sins of the father, right? Drown him at birth, noose around the neck, whatever works! Kid will turn out to be just as bad as his bastard father!)
Ace has demons in his eyes. Makino knows why.
-
Ace proudly calls himself Portgas D. Ace, so Makino has hope, and she loves this boy because he is Ace, the one who Luffy calls brother and the one who makes Luffy less lonely, and because Ace is a child and deserves love no matter what she thinks.
She works past the lump in her heart, when she gets home from that conversation from Garp, and opens the chest in her room.
(Tears drip from her eyes and the Party Bar is closed for the day, but that doesnt matter.
Whatever has, in the face of this bloodline?)
-
Makino was seven when the woman came into town. She was the most beautiful woman Makino had ever seen, gliding into port with hair the color of morning skies and a dash of freckles across her cheek. A flower rose in her hair, vibrant and beautiful, and her smile changed her face into something different, something Makino wished she had. She was pregnant but didn’t stumble under the weight of her still small belly, and instead stood tall and imposing, almost as tall as Garp.
Portgas D. Rouge came into port like a storm and exited like a whisper
“Child,” she had said to the only one at port that day, Makino, playing in the waves. “Where is everyone?”
“At the bar,” Makino told her blindly, because Foosha was small and had no need for anyone to be wary of strangers.
(The era of pirates was beginning today after all.)
“The Pirate King is being executed – everyone’s watching it.”
It was strange, how people’s faces broke at the strangest things.
“My name is Rouge,” the woman introduced herself. “Will you take me to the bar?”
“Sure.” And Makino did.
(She grabbed Makino’s outstretched hand when Makino lead her to the bar, and didn’t let go when they were inside. Makino didn’t mind (her mother never held her hand anymore). Eventually, the woman, Rouge, lifted her up and placed her on her hip, so she could see the Pirate King.
(He looked big, up on that stage. Who could ever kill him?)
They stood in the back of the bar as Roger shouted his last words – You want my treasure? You can have it! I left everything I gathered together in one place. Now you'll just have to find it! – and an era was born with the death of one man.
Rouge cried when it happened, and Makino didn’t know why. She was smiling though, still smiling that beautiful smile she gave Makino, so she figured it was alright even as tears dripped from her face onto Makino’s hair.
She clung tighter to Rouge, hoping to give her some comfort.
(Hoping she could make this woman happy again.)
It worked, as they left the bar where people were cheering, screaming, at the death of a King. Rouge smiled and her tears mixed with the salt spray from the beach, as she and Makino played in the sand.
Rouge stayed for a week, playing with Makino and giving her more attention than anyone else ever did. She left a flower in her hair when she left, whispered secrets of men and women Makino had never known, and kissed her forehead when Makino went to sleep on her shoulder.
Makino loved her, didn’t you know?
(She left, and never came back.)
-
Makino knows the path to the bandit den like the back of her hand by now. She makes journeys up there in the middle of the week, when the bar is quiet, to give boys a well-cooked meal and some bandits some booze. Its tradition, at this point.
This isn’t her usual day, so it’s a miracle the boys are even at the bandit den (she had heard from an excited Luffy that they were hiding out in a tree house now.) They cheer at her presence and the meal she brought while Dadan gives her a curious look.
They are covered in bruises, a blessing from Garp before he visited Makino, but are still running around, screeching and wrestling in the mud.
Makino doesn’t mind, and in a quiet moment, takes Ace away to talk to him.
“Ace,” She starts, kneeling down to be at his level. “Garp told me about your parents.”
Ace locks up, body freezing as his eyes go wide. There’s terror in them, and Makino feels her heart break. His mouth opens and shuts, words not coming out, but that’s okay.
Makino knows his question.
“I don’t care, Ace, I still love you.”
His eyes well up and he bites his lip, like he can’t bear to believe it. He’s trying to stay strong, and Makino can’t help but wonder at how similar he is to his mother.
(The freckles are a spitting image of Rouge, and Makino can’t help but wonder what he would look like if he had his mother’s hair.)
Ace sniffles and she draws him in. He’s too flustered to fight back, to unused to hugs to hug back, but that’s why Makino drew him away from everyone else.
Her shoulder grows wet from his tears as she gently brushes his hair back. “Shh. It’s okay, Ace. It’s okay.” When he grows quiet, eyes dried up, just a little, she says what she truly came up here to do.
“I have a present for you.”
He lifts his head up, face curious. “More clothes?”
“No, silly.” She laughs and then laughs again at the redness of his face. “Do you know what your mother looked like?”
Ace shakes his head, stilling. “No. Shitty Gramps told me stories though…”
And by the tone in his voice, it’s probably stories of his birth – not the ones Rouge told Makino on Foosha’s beaches twelve years ago.  She’s going to have to fix that.
Makino pulls the old and faded paper out of her pocket. “Here”
Ace takes one look at the poster and promptly breaks again
-
Two weeks after Rouge left Foosha, the News Coos brings another round of papers. Everyone scrambles for one, eager to hear what has happened since the Pirate King fell, but Makino is lucky enough to grab her mother’s copy.
Her reading isn’t the best now, but she likes looking at the wanted posters that come with them. There are so many new pirates now
The wanted poster that falls out is a new one, an updated one, with a face Makino hasn’t seen on a wanted poster before - but has seen in reality, cupped in her hands and counted the freckles of a stranger’s face
‘SEA STORM’ PORTGAS D. ROUGE - WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE: 1.5 BILLION BERRIES
Rouge... the pregnant woman who laughed and dance with Makino as if she was her own child. is wanted? is a pirate? Why?
Makino can’t fathom it and worries for the woman who she had known for a week.
She hopes she’s alive
She hopes she comes back
(She asks Garp about the woman, once, and some strange happenings run across his face, like worry and concern and anger all at once. He curses then interrogates Makino about everything she knows about the woman, which she tells him, trembling. Her mother scolds her for being dishonest but Garp thanks her, tells her she’s keeping her safe. That Rouge will be safe.
Makino is thankful.)
Raids start for the pirate Kings son the next week. Makino stays at home, afraid and hidden as soldiers interrogate every woman on the isle, how long they been there, if any people visited port before the capture of the king.
She hopes Rouge, regnant and tall and bold, escapes it.
Her bounty comes in again with a New Coo a year later, when raids have died down, and Makino is sure she’s alive.
1.7 billion, and she’s smiling.
Rouge survived. Makino can’t wait to see her again.
(That is the last picture she ever gets of Rouge. It’s not put up with the others when Makino takes over the bar at 16. It’s much too precious for that. instead, she hides it in her chest of precious things in her room, taking care to make sure the paper doesn’t crumble or fray. It’s a treasure she doesn’t admit to having, and dream she doesn’t say to the world but keeps close to her heart.)
Makino sees ace and knows Rouge didn’t survive for that woman, who played with her when no one else would, would never abandon her child willingly.
-
The wanted poster is faded but the picture is still clear through meticulous care.  a woman stares out from in, angled away from the camera but with her face fully visible. her hair flows in the morning light of the picture, pink against the sea in the background, and freckles dash across her face. she’s closed mouth but smiling eye amused but with one eyebrow raised. A hibiscus, pink and blooming, is nestled in her hair. Her skin is warm and glowing and she looks like an older Ace.
Its Rouge, queen of the seas.
Its Rouge, Aces mother.
In the wanted poster he takes gently from Makino, he sees his mother for the first time.
“Mom?” he croaks out, voice shaky and so, so hopeful. Makino hums, and settles in, guiding Ace to sit next to her as they stare at the wanted poster.
“Yes. When I was girl she visited this island... you look just like her, you know? I knew it was her the moment I saw you.”
“What... what was she like?” Aces voice is soft and hopeful as he traces the bounty number, so unbelievably high for someone he has never heard of.
Makino smiles. “She was kind, so unbelievably kind, to me at least. Just wandered into Foosha one day and took my hand – I think she was pregnant with you at the time, isn’t that fun?”
Ace gives a tiny smile, eyes wide and big as he stares at her. He hangs onto every word, trying to show that he isn’t lest she decides not to tell it, which she never would, but it’s endearing all the same.
“But to others,” Makino continues, “She was the storm at sea. Sea Storm Rouge, the papers called her, a legend known by the burning flower in her hair. She would appear like a maelstrom at sea, suddenly there before you could blink and taking down ships at a speed no one could rival save for a select few. She would free slaves from nobles in the same breath she took off with all their loot. She took nothing lying down.”
Sabo and Luffy sneak in to their tiny clearing and find their place next to Ace, knowing there’s a story to be told and not willing to miss it. She laughs at their curious expressions, and continues wither her tale of the woman she might have called mother as Ace pulls his brothers in close.
“She told me once of how she stared a sea king the size of an island down because he was bothering her morning meal…”
-
Rouge leaves in the quiet moments of dawn, when the sun is only barely rising and all is quiet save for the fishermen already out in the waters.
She takes Makino with her, out to the shore, taking her by the hand and leading her out as the girl rubbed sleep from her eyes.
There’s sadness in Rouge, Makino notes as they leave, passing by houses and towards the abandon beach half a mile from Foosha.
She doesn’t like the sadness there, but she senses it’s not her job to get rid of it – it’s the selfish kind of sadness, the kind that comes with loving some great.
(Makino’s young, but all the children of this world know that feeling.)
They watch the sunrise together in front of Rouge’s small ship, and lean into each other. Rouge’s hand braids Makino’s hair as she plays with the sword handle at the woman’s hip.
“Rouge,” She asks, quiet. It’s not the time for loudness. “Why are you leaving?”
Why are you leaving me?
(Makino’s mother runs the Party Bar and doesn’t leave time for anyone else. Her father isn’t around and the closest she has is Garp and Woopslap, and it should be enough, but it isn’t. Not next to this stranger who has told her of legends and let her hold her hand and dance under the stars. It’s not enough to the raging storm of Rouge’s love.)
Rouge smiles, face softening as she finishes tying off Makino’s braid. “I have to, to keep those I love safe. If I fight, I can win, but others won’t. And I won’t hurt them for their selflessness.”
“But what if its selfishness?”
What if I want you here for me?
Rouge rests a hand on her stomach and one on Makino’s head, and the world seems to still. There’s a pressure from Rouge, one that seems to make the light from the sun flicker under the force from it. It relents, after a moment, but Makino feels safe.
Secure.
Rouge loves her.
“Then you must live with that selfishness, like I do mine.” Her voice is soft. Makino takes the words and keeps them in her heart. It’s hers.
The sun is half over the horizon now. Rouge gets up, and lifts Makino from the railing where they sit to put her on the sandy ground. They are both barefoot, now, having run in the sand half an hour before, and their toes sink into sand as water runs over their toes.
It’s a peaceful kind of ending.
Rouge kneels, soaking her pants in the shore to look Makino in her eyes. She pulls the flower out of her hair, still immaculately pristine and beautiful, and places it behind Makino’s ear. “A gift,” she says, and kisses Makino on the forehead, “so you don’t forget me, alright?”
Makino nods and knows she never will.
No one but Makino knows the Maelstrom of the Grand Line was on Dawn Island, but as Rouge sails off into the raising son, one child left behind and one yet to be born, she finds that’s quite alright.
She was there, and that was enough.
(Never, her selfish heart whispers, never enough.)
-
Ace is the only one still awake by the time Makino tells the last of her few tales. He’s tired, clearly, resting heavily on Sabo as Luffy rests in his lap, but he keeps on blinking his eyes open. The sun is setting now, and Makino must really be going, but she has one last thing to show him.
“Come on,” She says, pulling Ace up and leaving his brothers to collapse on each other. “I have another gift for you.”
Ace looks at the wanted poster still held so gently in his hands, and follows into the woods.
There’s a field on the west side of the island, the cliffside above the shore half a mile from Foosha. Its filled with beautiful hibiscuses the shades of vibrant pink.
Ace had seen it before, on his ventures.
But now, Makino shows him the truth.
“Your mother gave me her flower, one of them at least, that was in that poster. It started wilting after a few days, so I found a way to replant the seeds and pressed the original… they quickly spread over the valley…”
The sun makes them burn like fire, and Makino sees the love of a mother reflected in Ace’s eyes.
Saltwater falls down her cheeks as she sees Ace take a flower like it is the most precious thing in the world (like Makino had treated the flower Rouge gave her) and place it in his hair. It’s just long enough in the step that it nestles gently in his hair, and he smiles, so happily, like she hasn’t seen him do unless he’s with his brothers.
Tears mirror hers on his cheeks and suddenly she’s staring at Rouge on the day she met her.
He gives her a flower next, and they walk under the setting sun to Dadan’s hut with Rouge’s love intertwined in their hair.
-
Makino is a bartender, which means she keeps information, and it means she inherited the place where she met a woman who changed her life.
She sees Ace off on the same shore she saw Rouge off, and cries and waves with joy in every moment. He sails into the sun, brilliant and bold, as flowers float around the waiting crowd, and she’s so, so happy.
She is a bartender so she gets the wanted posters two months later first: information is key, after all.
The poster is put up on the reserved wall, a place of pride for three two boys.
Fire Fist Ace, it declares, Captain of the Spades Pirates WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE!
The picture on it is a smiling boy on fire, freckled and smiling. His hat has two charms around it and a wreath of beads is around his neck, a gift from his bandit mother. Expected, for a runaway pirate.
Intertwined in the hat and in his hair, however, are brilliant pink hibiscuses – a tribute to a woman forgotten by the world.
(The rumors Makino hears tell of a boy who doesn’t care what you do to him, but if you harm his crew or the flowers on his ship and hat, there will be hell to pay from a boy made of fire.)
Makino thinks Rouge would be proud.
-
“Rouge? What are you going to name your baby?”
“Ann if it’s a girl. I would name her Makino, but I think the one I know is great enough!”
“Sesesese! And if it’s a boy?”
“Then Ace! That’s the name his father loved – it’s a good name, don’t you think? I love him already.”
“Can I be his big sister?”
“Of course.”
-
(Makino is a bartender, and that mean Makino has connections.
She asks Shanks to fill Ace’s grave with pink hibiscuses, and for Rayleigh to give Luffy a bouquet of them to give to the cracks in the Earth at Marineford.
It’s not nearly enough, but she will be selfish, just this once, and will cry about it.)
-
She names her child Ann and calls her my little sea storm, my little flower.
She knows Rouge would be proud.

Prologue: In Memoriam (Cara Bramente)
It had been seven months and three days since Haley Hotchner was killed by George Foyet in Hotch’s home. He had been dealing with the stress and grief as well as anyone might. His attention was equally divided between his son and his work and sometimes that equal division wavered one way or another. Mourning takes a lot out of someone. It takes their spirit and their drive. Sometimes, it makes them forget how to keep on going. But Hotch? Hotch had been doing okay. He was focusing on work and his team was keeping a close eye on him.
Especially Penelope Garcia.
It was so early in the morning and Penelope was just updating files and sipping her nonfat soy latte with double the whip cream and double on the expresso. It was another mindless morning and she was trying to take this moment of peace to take care of all the form work she missed in the past week. It was a dull day to say the least. They had closed a case last weekend and nothing but consults had come in. Like I said- dull.
*Ping!*
Penelope’s computer went off on the other side of the room and she slid over in her swivel chair with a coffee in hand. “That’s weird…” She mumbled to herself, immediately putting down her coffee to clack away at her computer. She zipped through cyberspace in confusion. It seemed that Hotch was opening up old case files- closed, solved case files. Penelope’s eyebrows knit together in a way that could rival Derek Morgan. She continued to type away, collecting a full list of the files that Hotch was opening up- “Oh my-!” She gasped under her breathe.
Hotch had opened up at least 50 closed and solved case files in the past three days. Concerned and obviously curious, Penelope opened some of them- trying to figure out what her boss was up to. They were all old BAU cases that preceded most of the current members on the team. The case had a lot of names in common, even some that Penelope didn’t recognize. Of course she saw her boys all over these cases: Jason Gideon, David Rossi, and Sir Aaron Hotchner. Some of them even had FBI photos of a young trio of men when they were just Special Agents and not Supervisory Special Agents. One picture, however, caught her eye more than the others. It was a picture of Aaron Hotchner, younger than Penelope had ever seen him and smiling in a way that was so rare, Penelope could attest it as a miracle.
Hotch was very reserved, you see.
In the picture was a young Aaron Hotchner in the car laughing with another young woman next to him. It looked as though Hotch had said something funny to make the girl laugh and he had succeeded. She had an opened mouth laugh as she put a hand on her chest and the other on his shoulder, throwing her head back with a smile. She had long black hair, thick eyebrows, and high cheekbones. Her smile was beaming and in the frame of this picture at least, Penelope thought she was absolutely beautiful- a happy smile in a piece stolen from time. The picture made her smile and personally, Penelope thought he looked like an Aaron more than a Hotch in this picture.
She clicked through the picture to get the details and descriptions.
/SA Bramente and SA Hotchner driving back from case in Atlanta with SSA Max Ryan and SA David Rossi/
An Agent Bramente had also been mentioned in all of the case files. “Bramente…” Penelope mumbled under her breathe in confusion. She had never heard that name before. She opened up the Active FBI database and typed in the eight letter word.
No Matches.
Her eyebrows knit together once more, “But she’s a special agent. Even dishonorable discharges are in the database.” The mumbled danced under her breathe as she delved deeper and deeper into the database- going so far as to authorize and unlock on closed files. Penelope did the search again, confident that she’d soon be able to clear her curiosity.
Access Denied.
Higher Clearance Required.
Penelope let out a yelp in shock. Higher clearance? Penelope was about as high clearance as it gets around here. Her ego, a little bruised and offended, paused for a moment to take a breather and weigh her options. On one hand, she could very easily override the access requirement and move on her merry way. On the other hand, Penelope wondered if it was worth stirring up Hotch’s well-tempered but terrifying anger. It wasn’t. So she went to the next best thing.
“Is there an active case on the BAU or a Special Agent Bramente that I don’t know about?”
Chocolate Thunder, Derek Morgan, looked up from his work in confusion at Penelope’s question. He was the only one in the bullpen right now. JJ was in her office while Prentiss and Reid were out on a consult. His eyebrows furrowed at his best friend. “Not that I know of. Whose Agent Bramente?”
“I don’t know!” Penelope hissed under her breathe as she took a seat in front of Derek to explain the situation. “This morning I got a ping about unusual activity on Hotch’s computer. I set up alerts in case we’re hacked again or someone is doing weird mumbo jumbalaya on the computers. It makes me nervous so I need to be on top of thing here!”
Derek laughed under his breath, “Okay, momma, okay. You’re on top of things. Now get to the point, whose Agent Bramente?”
Penelope cleared her throat as she leaned down to whisper. “That’s the problem! All of these files that Hotch is opening has all familiar names on them except for hers. Then, when I tried to look her up in the database- it said I needed a higher clearance and denied me access.”
Derek had to resist the urge to shrug, “Babygirl, I thought you could override that restriction?”
Penelope nodded and rolled her head, having already gone over that solution in her head about ten minutes ago, “I could but it’s Hotch whose been opening up those files. I’m worried but I don’t want to break Bureau rules if (a) it makes Sir Hotch angry and (b) if Sir Hotch does not have my back.”
She had a point. Even Derek had to admit it. He shrugged his shoulders and nodded his head, “Alright… So I guess we gotta go to the next best thing.” He paused shortly before motioning to the open office door next to their Unit Chief’s office. The door that read SSA David Rossi.
Penelope walked in with a purpose.
Rossi looked at her like she was insane.
Derek closed the door behind him.
Rossi suddenly felt as though he was about to be given a precise presentation on why they deserved a higher allowance.
“Hello.” He greeted shortly, “How may I help you?” He asked motioning for the two very curious agents to sit down. Two agents who looked curious and off kelter of sorts.
The moment they sat down, Penelope burst out, “Whose Bramente?”
David looked as though he had just been slapped the face the moment the name came spilling out of Penelope’s mouth. His eyes widened slightly and his mouth was ajar, “W-Where did you hear that name?” His face began to boil up in anger, “Who told you that name?” He demanded in a voice a little too harsh than intended. Penelope jumped back out of instinct and Derek tensed up.
“Woah-Woah! Rossi, calm down.” He raised a hand between the three of them, “Garcia was just checking out activity and noticed that Hotch was pulling up a lot of cases involving a Special Agent Bramente.” He explained slowly as Rossi began to lean back into his seat, his shock coming down to normal level again.
Penelope shifted in her seat, “And then when I went to check out who she was- it said I had restricted access. I didn’t want to override the block, especially if Sir Hotch is the one working on it….” She paused for a few moments, trading glances with Derek. “And then I found a picture-” She stood up and slide the printed out photo onto his desk. The one of a smiling Agent Bramente and young Agent Hotchner. “It… It said that you were there when the picture was taken.”
Rossi picked up the photo and smiled fondly, “She probably slipped this photo in the file as a joke.” His voice fell upon a whisper as he looked at the photo. “I’m pretty sure she was the one who turned it in.” His smile was nostalgic- as though he was being encased in the soft warmness of better times.
“Whose Bramente, Rossi? And why is Hotch looking at her old case files?”
Rossi looked up at Derek then to Penelope and then to his closed door. He pulled open the bottom drawer of his desk and pulled out a large stack of papers pinned together. Words had been inked out and time had weathered down the pages. Rossi ran his fingers across the lettering and the title with a sigh. “Special Agent Carolina Bramente was a former agent of the BAU.” He looked up to face Penelope and Garcia. “She’s dead. She’s been dead for seven years.”

The End of the World Pt.21
Thor, Steve, and the Caller
Pairing: Thor x Reader
Word Count: 4,190
Masterpost
Warnings: Language
A/N: So, something happened while I was writing this chapter. My computer decided to push an update and closed out everything without warning. Which corrupted my file so that I could no longer access it. Needless to say, I sat staring at my computer for a bit, annoyed, and wondering if I wanted to begin again. I did and I think it helped me create a smoother beginning. I hope you all like this one, lots of development between the characters and a bit of insight into a relationship that we I hadn’t explored yet. I hope you like it! xoxo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Flying isn’t as fun as it looks. You’ve seen Thor and Tony take off many times. Though, sheltered in his suit, you’re sure that for Tony maybe it is as fun as it looks. For you, soaring through the sky at speeds and altitudes that you had yet to reach is a pain in the ass.
It’s cold. Someone smarter than you would have known that flying high up in the sky would mean that it would be colder. Silly of you not to think of that. You’ve always been nestled in Thor’s arms, warm and shielded so how were you supposed to know that doing it alone would suck? Apart from the temperature, the flight seems to take a lot of your strength. Your focus is not so much a problem. You’re still so angry that you channel that into your flying and find that a small tilt to the left or right alters your flight easily. But the effort it takes to change directions at this speed is larger than at slower speeds. Your control needs to be more precise.
You just need practice. You’ll get better at it. You’ve been flying for about an hour when you begin to feel strange. You’re still focused but you find it harder to keep your body moving at the speed with which it moves. You stop suddenly, hovering for a second before your body suddenly dips five feet. You scream in surprise. Your stomach bottoms out with the sudden lurch downwards.
“What the hell?” You look around and you’re sure that you’re nowhere near home. This would be a terrible place to stop.
A strange pain hits your stomach and you begin to realize that you might be running out of energy. You haven’t eaten since breakfast and with the sun to your left already dipping down along the horizon, you’re sure your body is expecting dinner. “Damn it.”
You push yourself forward again, focusing as much of your energy into propelling you through the air. Despite this, you still begin to fly at an incline, unintentionally as your body begins to lose its stamina.
“Shit.” Your body begins to fall. As your stomach turns over and then clenches painfully again to remind you you’re hungry, you watch as the world begins to come closer and into fast focus. Below you is a large lake surrounded by green trees. Thanks to your keen, serum enhanced eyes, you can see that there are several docks around the lake that jut out from the shore. A thousand feet up and you try to focus again. You need to land in the water. Landing on the ground from this height would result in injuries that you have no training to deal with. Even with the serum you know that at this distance a fall would hurt. Would it kill you?
Eight hundred feet up and the people around the lake begin to come into focus. There’s a group of teens to the left of the lake, a family having a party straight ahead, and to your right, as you reach three hundred feet, you can see a small girl—a toddler—wrapped in an oversized towel. Her soft brown hair is pulled up high into a palm tree ponytail and the only other thing you can see are her chubby little legs peeking out from the bottom of her towel. She’s bathed in the golden orange light of the sunset and can’t be more than three years old. She stares at you, watching you fall with a gaze so stoic that it puts Steve’s to shame.
A hundred feet and then suddenly, as the water seems to rise to meet you, you crash through the surface of the water. The pain and sudden warm temperatures of the water shocks you. You were freezing up in that sky. Next time, you’ll definitely change into your uniform. For several minutes you simply sink as your body registers the change in gravity and atmosphere. The pain begins to subside only when the ache of your stomach and lungs becomes more demanding. Your mind clears a bit as you struggle to breathe. You swim upwards, weak strokes at first, but as the oxygen levels in your body begin to seriously fall your arms and legs pump faster against the water.
You break the surface, greedily gulping in the air around you and lean back so that you can relax and allow your body to float as your lungs fill. The more oxygen your body consumes the clearer your mind gets. With your senses returning your sense of smell seems to take priority. You smell hot dogs to your right!
You push yourself up so that you can look towards the small girl who still watches you from her dock. Behind her, two men—one with blonde hair and one with black hair wearing a chef’s hat—stand mid embrace, staring out at you as well. Though the girl is unimpressed, the two men watch you with mouths agape.
With your stomach in command you swim towards the trio and watch as the blonde headed man rushes forward to scoop up his little girl. He moves aside as you climb up onto the dock, clutching his daughter close as he watches you with wary eyes. You’re dripping, tired, and so damn hungry. You give the man a smile, a small wave to the girl, and over to the chef you move.
“I’m sorry to bother you and I know the last thing you expected to do today was to feed some chick that just fell from the sky, but can I have one of those? I’m starving.” You stare at the steaming dogs, the sizzle so mouth watering it makes you swallow hard.
The chef holds the tongs out for you to take, his hand shaking slightly. You smile, ecstatic at his generosity, and move to the grill to make yourself a hotdog, ignoring all condiments in favor of getting the food into your stomach as quickly as possible.
“Thank you so much. Seriously. You’re a life saver.” You said one but as you devour the hotdog in three bites you make yourself another one.
The man takes a step back and as you swallow a large bite you shake your head. “I won’t hurt you, I promise.”
“Wh-wh-who are you?” The man asks, his eyes boring into yours.
“Are you an alien?” The blonde man says.
You turn your gaze on him and he sways back as if you lunged at him. “Do I look like an alien?”
Oh, that’s right, the hair.
“No. I’m…human. My name is…uh…Vex.” Which is true. You had been about to tell him your real name but that probably wasn’t a good idea.
“How did you fall from the sky and survive?”
You chew quickly and swallow. You take another bite as you consider how to answer him and then begin to make another hotdog as you decide that the truth is the best policy. “I’m an Avenger.”
The two men exchange a look and they seem to relax a little. The magic word! “I’ve never heard of you.” The chef says.
“I’m kinda new? I’m still learning how to…do things. I was flying home and I sorta fell.” You admit with a straight face. You’re too busy making another hot dog to care how it comes off.
The blonde man smiles nervous, amused by the idea of an Avenger falling from the sky because they don’t know how to fly. Well, at least they no longer seem threatened by you.
“Do you want a burger?” The chef suddenly asks, and he opens a second grill that you hadn’t noticed because you were so invested in the hotdogs.
You swallow hard again, your mouth watering. “Please?”
The next half hour, as the sun fully sets covering the lake in beautiful bright moonlight, is spent being fed by the chef, his husband, and their three-year-old little girl whose name you discover is Diana. The conversation is mostly lighthearted. You find out you’re in Kansas, which you’ve also never visited. However, the conversation doesn’t remain lighthearted. You do spend about ten minutes listening to them talk about how lucky they were when the world ended. Neither of their parents were still alive and they were both only children. They’d lost a friend but otherwise they were largely unaffected by the end.
“You were very lucky, and I’m glad that you three are together.” You can just imagine the number of children now orphaned or the parents left without their children, all because of Thanos. It’s a depressing spot to leave the conversation but since you’re fed, it’s time to go. You rise slowly and the men, August and Tim, rise with you. Tim, the blonde man, carefully cradles Diana who fell asleep halfway through your meal.
“Do you have a long way to go?” August asks. “Want a burger for the road?”
You laugh and shake your head. “No, thank you, I think I’ve eaten my fill. I’m so grateful for your generosity. I won’t forget this.”
“It was our pleasure.” Tim smiles.
You turn to leave but think better and turn back quickly. “It’s probably best that you don’t tell anyone I was here. If anyone asks about me, just tell them I stole some of your food and ran away, okay?”
“Why?” Tim asks, his eyes wide in his confusion.
“There are some people after me and I’d hate for something to happen to you three because of me. Please, promise me that you’ll lie about my being here. Can you do that?” You add, influencing them is not on your agenda today. Though you could just force them to lie.
Tim and August exchange a quick look and nod. “We promise.”
You smile again and nod. “Good. Take care.”
You turn and decide that maybe for a little bit, running might be better. You reach the tree line and as soon as you’re somewhat sheltered you push yourself to full speed. You continue like this for only a few minutes because you’re so curious as to whether being fed and not being fed will affect how far you can fly. Up in the air, the world disappears and you’re able to focus on pushing your limits.
Tumblr media
“I’m not saying it’s not good to see you, bud, but you show up here, take Y/N, and then have the audacity to come back without her?” Tony’s voice is hard, upset, his temper close to exploding.
“I did try and bring her back, but she would not let me.” Thor replies. “She flew away after kicking me.”
“Good.” Steve says.
“Tony, you know Y/N, if she wanted to go with Thor none of us were going to be able to stop her.” Bruce interjects.
“He’s right, babe.” Pepper says weakly.
“I understand your anger, Stark, but that is why I came, to assure that she arrived safely.”
“No!” Tony snaps, his snarky tone dropped for a shorter more staccato inflection. “No, you don’t understand. There are people after her. Okay? She’s not safe out there, on her own. If she doesn’t come back, then what? Hm? You go back to Jane and we’re left to pick up the pieces.”
“Danger?” Thor repeats. He’s confused but suddenly very interested and worried. “What people? Why haven’t you told me about this?”
“We had it handled.” Steve replies.
When Tony speaks again, his voice is quiet but intense, like he’s standing close to whomever he’s speaking to. “You brought her here. You brought her into this life and then you passed off that responsibility. Now you have the nerve to show up, take her, and let her leave on her own?”
You don’t want to hear anymore. You move inside finally, clearing the doorway from the balcony into the atrium. The sight is one to behold. Thor stands closest to you, facing everyone else. Tony is indeed standing right beside Thor. Even though Thor is massive and towers over Tony, the look on Tony’s face is severe and threatening. Pepper sits on one of the sofas by the chess set on the coffee table, Bruce stands leaning against the back of that same sofa, and behind Tony and Thor, furthest from you, is Steve. He stands with his arms crossed over his chest, his gaze glued to the floor in what you recognize as his worried expression when he’s trying to keep everyone from seeing just how worried he is.
“Er, guys?” Bruce is the first one to see you. He stares at you with wary eyes. Pepper sees you next, her eyes filled with relief. Then Tony looks over and his faces seems to relax instantly as he sets eyes on you.
“Son of a bitch.” He mutters somewhat quietly. It’s so still in the room however that everyone hears him. “I thought I said you were grounded?”
In the same moment, Steve races around Tony and Thor until he’s at your side his hands finding your shoulders as he looks you over, the worry on his face finally showing through. “Are you alright?”
“Sorry.” You reply, both to Tony and Steve. “I’m okay. A little tired.”
Tony moves over to Pepper and plants himself beside her. “How did you get here?”
“I flew.” You look away from Steve to Tony who exchanges a look with Bruce in their excitement. Why are they so excited about your flying? It’s funny but also annoying. You don’t like those tests they like putting you through.
“How fast did you go?” Bruce inquires, eagerly.
“Arizona to Kansas in a little over an hour? Another two hours from there to here?” However the hell fast that was.
“Mach 1?” Bruce says as he turns to Tony who seems as pleased as Bruce. “That’s impressive.”
“Do you have any idea how dangerous it was for you to just up and fly away by yourself?” Steve asks you, his hands grip your arms more tightly as his anger seems to seep through.
“I know. I’m sorry, I just…” You needed to get out of that desert. You weren’t thinking. You were reacting. You turn your eyes to Thor finally and the ache in your chest angers you so much, you glare. “Why are you here?”
“Welp, that’s our cue. How about we go have dinner in the den, honey?” Tony helps Pepper to her feet.
“Good idea.” She replies.
“I’ll join you.” Bruce says as he scurries after Pepper and Tony.
Thor looks as relieved as Steve had just a minute ago before he’d switched to being angry. He takes a few steps towards the two of you and you see his eyes land on Steve’s hands around your arms then move back up to your face.
“I only came to ensure your safe arrival. I did not know you could fly.” He says, sounding somewhat impressed.
“Well, I’m here, so you can go.” You’re trying not to be angry and hurt but it’s seeping out and you can’t help it. You don’t want Steve to see it. You shift your focus on him.
“Where were you?” You demand. It’s his turn to look apologetic. He takes back his hands, looks up at Thor quickly, then turns his gaze on you but doesn’t meet your eyes.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have stayed away for so long. I had something to take care of.”
You’ve never seen Steve not tell you the truth intentionally. It’s very easy to see the difference between him refusing to tell you the truth and him almost outwardly lying.
“Something so urgent you left me alone in your room in the middle of the night?” You forget for a second that Thor is there as your curiosity takes priority.
Steve doesn’t, and he glances up at Thor. “I think we should talk about this later.” Steve reaches out for you again, but you take a step away from him, hating the way this feels.
“Steve, what’s going on?”
Steve frowns and shakes his head. “Not now.”
This is stupid. You scoff as you look away from him and then look up at Thor who stands trying to blend into the room, avoiding looking at the two of you. You’ve never seen that particular look on his face before and you’re sure he’s feeling uncomfortable. Well, now he knows how it kind of felt to watch him and Jane in the desert. Though you and Steve fighting might not be as jealousy inducing as watching him fuss over Jane. Thor gives you a wide, toothless grin. With another glare you turn and move towards the hallway that leads down to your room.
“Damn it.” Steve mutters.
You freeze, here in the hallway, out of sight, you can still hear him.
“Y/N does not like to be lied to.” Thor says.
“Yeah, I know.” Steve replies.
You know that eavesdropping is wrong but they’re talking about you! The temptation is too great, so you press yourself against the wall by your door, trying to lay as flat as possible so that they cannot see you.
“Is the secret you are keeping from her really so important to keep? It would be better if you were honest with her. She is not a woman to trifle with when she is lied to.”
“I just don’t know how to tell her. It’s complicated.” Steve sighs.
“Complicated how?” Thor asks, curious it sounds like.
“I got a phone call the other night.”
“Yes.” Thor urges him on.
“It was a call from Sharon.”
“Sharon?” Thor asks, unsure of who Steve is talking about.
“She’s a girl I sort of had a thing with. We were never really official. She used to work for S.H.I.E.L.D. and then she worked for the C.I.A. When I went on the run we lost contact and then when Wakanda happened I was too afraid to find out if she’d survived or not. It turns out she did. She was on a plane when it happened, and the plane went down when the pilot and co-pilot disappeared. She and a few other people survived, and they were only recently picked up. I went to see her. If I tell Y/N that,”
“She will murder you. With her bare hands. Judging from the strength of her kick which I surmise was only part of her strength, she is more than capable of really strangling you. And after what I put her through with Jane, she cannot take another instance of being pushed aside for a former lover. You say that your courtship with this Sharon was never official?”
“No.” Steve assures him. “But I’d be lying if I said that things weren’t still…complicated.”
You shut your eyes, regretting your decision to eavesdrop. You feel them begin to sting and shut them even more tightly. Very gently but in your frustration, you bang the back of your head against the wall, biting down hard on your lower lip to keep from making any noise. Why was this happening to you?
“So, what will you do?” Thor asks Steve. “This was not part of our agreement.”
Agreement?!
“Agreement? Thor, it wasn’t like we signed a contract. You said that your leaving would be best, and I assured you that I would keep her safe.”
“Is breaking her heart not the opposite of keeping her safe?” Thor asks. “Contract or no, you are breaking your word.”
“I’m not going to break her heart.” Steve assures Thor. “I can’t do that to her. Whatever there might be…whatever there was between Sharon and I, I won’t leave her.”
The room is suddenly quiet for several minutes. You wonder if maybe they’ve left.
“I am sorry for taking her to look for Jane. I was unaware of the dangers to her life or I would have never let her leave the compound.”
“I appreciate that. But if I’m honest, we can’t keep her locked up here like some prisoner. She’s going to have to get out there and fight.” Steve sighs.
“You could not stop her even if you were to try.” Thor says with a smile in his voice. “She’s so strong now. She’s changed so much.”
“Only in strength. She’s still as vulnerable as she’s always been.”
“Yes.” Thor says, remembering your fight this afternoon, maybe? “I should go, Jane will be wondering where I am.”
“How’s that going?” Steve asks, genuinely curious.
“Oh, you know, it is what it is.” When Steve doesn’t reply Thor speaks up again. “Things are fine.”
“Good.” Steve replies. “See you around.”
You quickly sneak into your room, shutting the door carefully behind you before moving to sit on your bed with your back to the door and begin to strip off your shoes, socks, and then reach behind you to try and unzip your dress. Your mind is racing with new information. Your heart is aching again, this time because once again, you’re in the way. This time it’s Steve and Sharon? How lame! Their names start with the same letter.
You huff as you find your unreasonable panic ridiculous and funny. You place both of your hands on either side of your lap and lean forward as you try to steady your breathing. You’re not going to cry again. Not today. You’ve shed enough tears today. A knock on your door makes you sit up straight. You swallow the knot in your throat and reach back towards your zipper again.
“Come in.” Your voice is steady, thank goodness.
“You still awake?” Steve asks. He moves in and shuts the door behind him.
“Yeah. I can’t,” You stretch harder, trying to grasp the little clasp on the back of your dress. “Reach.”
“Let me.” Steve climbs onto the bed and moves up behind you, kneeling on your bed, then slowly slides the zipper down to your waist. “There.”
He pushes the dress open a bit, his fingers grazing the skin of your back. You shut your eyes and fight the wave of sadness that threatens to overcome you. Suddenly you feel his lips between your shoulders and you stand up quickly. It’s a sudden reaction, like you’ve been shocked.
“Thanks.” You say and quickly peel the dress off, throwing it into the small hamper by your dresser. You reach for the same grey robe you wore the first night you arrived with Thor and slip it on before turning to look at Steve. He’s sitting on the edge of your bed, looking at you with worried storm blue eyes. “What was the call about, Steve?”
Steve sighs, his expression serious. He knows you’re not going to drop it. “It…” He swallows, and you know he’s warring with himself. Whether being honest with you is worth the pain it might cause you.
Please be honest with me. Please don’t lie to me.
“You remember I told you that I wasn’t sure if Sharon was alive or dead?” He gets to his feet, rubs at his chin and moves to look at a few of the books you’ve been reading on the dresser.
“Yeah?”
“Well, she’s alive. That was her on the phone the other night. And I left…to go meet her. They found her on a small island, stranded with a few other people after their plane crashed. I was her first call.” This was his way of saying that she’d wanted to see him and because he’d left in such a damn hurry, he most definitely wanted to see her too.
“And you wanted to see her?”
Steve looks at you, knowing exactly where your thoughts are. He frowns and moves towards you his hands coming up to grab you by your waist and pull you towards him. “Y/N, there’s something about Sharon that I haven’t told you. There’s a reason she’s important to me.”
“You two were into each other, I get it.” You reply. You don’t pull away from him because right now, after losing Thor, you don’t want to lose Steve too. You’re not going to let this one go without a fight. Not this time. You’re done giving their ex-girlfriends a chance to steal them away. And though his touch makes your heart ache, it also makes your desire to have him be yours more intense. You reach down and run your hands along his forearms and stop only when you’ve reached his biceps. Your fingers caress his muscles gently, relishing in the way they feel underneath your hands.
“It’s more than that. You see Sharon’s last name is Carter.”
“Okay?” You bring your hands up to his chest, resting them there, reminding him of what your touch feels like. You won’t let him forget it. You’ll make him want it more than he’s ever wanted anything in his life.
“And her aunt was Margaret Carter,” Steve continues.
“Right?” You reply, your voice quiet and close to a whisper.
“Who we both know as Peggy Carter.”
Your hands freeze, and you let that sink in for a minute, eyes glued on Steve’s. “Oh.”

Sometimes you just want a nice, long novel-length (or thereabouts) STAR WARS fic to sink into, maybe you’re going on a long car ride or maybe you’re visiting family without regular internet or maybe you just want some kissing to happen in that novel-length fic! I mean, canon is amazing and wonderful, but sometimes you want to pick up something and have the undercurrents finally rise to the surface, so here are some of my favorite Obikin and Obianidala novel length fics! ✦ wicked thing by imaginarykat, obi-wan/anakin & ventress & dooku & ahsoka & cast, 97.3k wip    There are rumours of yet another Sith Lord hiding among the Separatists. The Council sends Anakin to investigate. Anakin has a bad feeling about this.    I’ve done several recs for this fic, which are collated on this post, but am writing a new one to encompass the entire fic rather than piecemeal, so those that are new to this fic will have a better one to hopefully encourage them to read it! This is another fic I’ve been reading pretty much since the beginning and would immediately read it as soon as a new chapter dropped and will have a tough time writing a coherent rec for it–there’s a reason it’s so massively popular in the fandom, because the writing is absolute joy to read, that it’s almost 100k of Anakin’s point of view where he’s a completely #Relatable emotional mess, in that sort of hilarious and utterly engaging way. It combines that with the just as delightful Soft Sith aesthetic/dynamic that is so, so much fun with these characters and writes an Obi-Wan Kenobi who is charming and charismatic, but so much more dangerous, where he’s so much more selfish and all that insight and precision and lethality to him are turned to much more dangerous avenues.    The fic sparked a ton of trends in fandom (especially helping to popularize Soft Sith!Obi-Wan, for which I am forever grateful) and, once you start reading, it’s easy to see why, there’s just something to this fic that is really special, it’s an Obi-Wan/Anakin fic, but the kind that I would recommend to anyone who is one the fence about them, the kind of fic that draws new fans into the pairing, the kind of fic that may not be their canon selves, but keeps enough of their dynamic and is just plain ridiculously hot and delicious, that it hits all the right buttons for the ship. There is still Anakin being so tremendously strong in the Force, but such an utter disaster in his personal life. There’s Obi-Wan who makes things seem easy, but has worked incredibly hard to get where he is. There’s Anakin being absolutely and completely turned around and confused and not knowing which way is up, really wanting someone to follow, and Obi-Wan who may not tell him everything, who may be kind of manipulative, but there’s such a solid foundation of genuine care there. All of this is balanced together so well and then written with a plot and an incredibly deft hand, so that every single scene sparkles and draws the reader in. It’s that Obikin fic that I will go, “Here, read this if you’re thinking about getting into the pairing.” because I think it does the groundwork for showing what a fun pairing they can be, while also just being a scream of a fic. ✦ Ouroboros by bedlamsbard, obi-wan/anakin/padme & cast, time travel, 458k wip    Considering that he had picked up what was probably a Sith artifact, promptly passed out in the middle of a war zone, and apparently woken up twenty years in the future with Obi-Wan having taken up residence in his head, Anakin thought he was entitled to have a few questions.    Wake the Storm: So, I pretty much sunk into this fic and didn’t come out again until I’d read the whole thing, I just absolutely couldn’t put it down! My only caveat is that, while the build-ups and suspense are stellar, you just kind of have to roll with that the fic is not as strong at reveals. The way the fic is structured, there’s a lot of “omg when will Character A find out about Character b????” that don’t necessarily happen or happen late in the fic or aren’t pieced together when they should be or aren’t dwelled on for long. I don’t think this is a huge detriment, so long as you know what you’re getting ahead of time, though, because what the fic is about (Anakin skipping around the timeline and other universes, dragging Obi-Wan along with him) is absolutely fantastic. The writing is incredibly engaging, it’s the kind where I find this far more readable than a lot of professionally published books, that the plot structure and pacing of the scenes is all rock solid for me. (Tbh, probably the only reason any caveats occur to me at all is because the fic as a whole is so well written.)    The characterization is lovely and gets at the heart of what I wanted–where Anakin experiences the destruction and tragedy that happens, his horror at it solidified by the time he finds out his connection to it, as well as his interaction with Obi-Wan is strengthened up because of what Obi-Wan has been through and how he’s seeing Anakin again and how much time he’s had to think over the events of Anakin’s future. The plot is interesting and the fic spends time with each world but doesn’t linger and there has clearly been thought given to setting all of it up, but it blends into the story perfectly, like… you know those fics you can pick up and just read and read and read because they’re so engaging and written with such good pacing that you don’t want to put it down, that even when it shifts gears, you find yourself rolling right along with it because you want to know what happens next? That’s what this fic did for me, I was so curious about where it was going next and how this was all going to affect them.    While this story itself is gen, you can tell that the story is heading towards Obi-Wan/Anakin/Padme, so it spends time building Obi-Wan/Anakin back up and shifting it to romantic instead of platonic, that it doesn’t happen here at all, but you can feel how desperately Anakin loves Obi-Wan and how Obi-Wan has been given the time to really reflect on feelings and attachment and on Anakin in general, so that I believe it. Plus, I’m a sucker for all the little touches, like Anakin sleeping on Obi-Wan or the way he touches Anakin after he goes through a tough time, it got me right in the feelings place, to go along with the intriguing greater story. I am now going to proceed to dive right into the monster sequel fic and probably roll around in my feelings some more.    Queen’s Gambit: I haven’t yet finished Queen’s Gambit, but I’m including it on this list because I enjoyed the first fic a lot and I think I can safely recommend the sequel already. ♥ ✦ Seed by bell (bellaboo), obi-wan/anakin & anakin/padme, NSFW, 44k    When Anakin falls prey to a lethal poison, Obi-Wan has no choice but use all his resources to heal him– no matter how reluctant he is in administering the antidote.    I love how this fic started out as an excuse for fuck-or-die blowjobs, but then went and developed feelings and an actual plot. That is my favorite kind of thing! But what really gets me about this fic is that everything is so carefully considered and given so much thought, that the miscommunication between Obi-Wan and Anakin takes so long to resolve (but without being dragged out too long just for the sake of drama or padding the fic) is central to the story and such care is given to show how these two characters misunderstand each other and why they clash and things so often go off kilter with them. The entire point of showcasing that miscommunication is to nudge the characters into a situation where they have to face it and actually work to resolve it. This is not a smooth path, especially not with feelings being brought to the surface, that both characters have to work through.    Obi-Wan meditates and tries not to burden Anakin with his feelings and balance being a Jedi with what the heart of the man wants, which works so well because Obi-Wan has never been about denial of feelings, but instead about letting them go, about accepting them and releasing them because he has another path that he’s chosen to walk. So what happens when he finds that these surfaced feelings are stronger than he intended and he doesn’t want to let them go? The fic works hard to bring him to a fork in the road where he has to choose one path or the other, that both are important roads for him, and the choice is legitimately difficult. It takes care to show that Obi-Wan isn’t perfect, he doesn’t always understand Anakin, he’s human and Anakin gets to him, but also that Obi-Wan is someone who knows himself very well and is emotionally stable, that the difficulty is in the choice, not the knowledge.    By contrast, Anakin is just an emotional mess who doesn’t understand Obi-Wan, but also doesn’t really understand how to process anything, that he’s all instinct and reaction, but that doesn’t make his feelings any less real or there. This is a fic that is about Anakin struggling to understand Obi-Wan, struggling to understand his own feelings, struggling to not make all the worst choices–there’s a moment later in the fic where he could make an absolutely disasterous choice and keep an important secret from Obi-Wan, but he’s struggled through so much (and become so much more trusting, because his relationship with Obi-Wan is closer) that he makes a better choice. The fic is just as much about dragging Anakin into making better choices, tiny bit by tiny bit. And about how Anakin is just never going to be an independent person, he’s always going to be dependent on those he loves, and that Obi-Wan has to come around to understanding this and accepting it about him.    It’s also a fic that may not be centrally about her, but Padme has a very real and very present role in the fic. Anakin’s love for her is just as valid as his love for Obi-Wan, that he thinks of her while she’s not there, that he’s terrified of losing her, that the conversation he has with her about Obi-Wan is painful and difficult because he leads with his heart, that actions that might be manipulative in others (like wanting to be with two people and have them approve of him being with both) are just who Anakin is. He’s still selfish and probably entirely hypocritical (he would never share either of them the way he wants to share himself), but it’s never done with artifice, he clings to both of them because he’s so insecure and needy, he’s desperate to keep both of them, he’s an absolute mess, and the fic never denies that. It doesn’t deny that this is painful for everyone involved, because it’s not easy for Padme to share her husband, it’s not easy for Obi-Wan to feel like an intruder on someone else’s relationship, and it’s not easy for Anakin to know that he’s asking for so much, but terrified of losing either one of them. I love that this fic holds Obi-Wan and Anakin apart because Obi-Wan is very much “if you’re going to do something, do it right” and he holds firm on that, he draws a boundary and keeps it there, that he’ll reassure Anakin in other ways (the element of Anakin asking for Obi-Wan’s total honesty when Obi-Wan won’t budge on starting a relationship until they’ve worked the problems out was so satisfying for this!), but he won’t cross lines that shouldn’t be crossed, like, yes, that is Obi-Wan’s character and exactly what Anakin needs from him in this relationship, just as Padme doesn’t react happily to the news that Anakin’s in love with Obi-Wan, but she has such emotional openness and care that she provides the warmth and acceptance that Anakin needs, the two of them filling in the different jagged edgegs of Anakin’s character.    Which is what I mean about this fic giving such thought and care to each scene and character, that I can pull all of it apart and it holds up to that scrutiny for me, that it may not be the longest fic I’ve ever read, but it’s certainly one that knows the characters it’s writing and what it wants to do with them and what motivates them. It’s a fic that starts out as cracky, but then uses it as a character exploration and is just really damned satisfying to me for it! ✦ Soldier, Poet, King by Glare, obi-wan/anakin & qui-gon & dooku & mace & cast, NSFW, sith!obi-wan, time travel, 101.5k wip    Second chances are very rarely given, but the Force smiles upon two of its favorite children and returns them to a time before their actions have met their consequences.    I’ve done several recs for this fic, which are collated on this post, but I’m sticking with an earlier rec that won’t give too much away, but still hopefully tells you why you should read one of my favorite fics: I cannot tell you how in love with this fic I am, how much I love what it’s doing on both a plot level and an id-pleasing level. The fic first got me with these little moments of Ben (older Sith!Obi-Wan) and the way he would crowd into Anakin’s space, the way he would touch Anakin, the way he would run a hand down Anakin’s back or shove him up against the wall when he was getting out of control, there was this quiet but powerful intimacy between them, both dangerous and something very genuine there. It’s so incredibly good, the way Anakin curls up against Ben’s side or wriggles onto his lap, the way he so very much wants affection from his once-again-Master, the way Ben knows this after all they’ve been through together and the lives they’ve lived and this second chance, the way he absolutely is manipulative and much more iron-handed than he was before, but some part of Anakin feeds on that. It’s so well written and there’s such charm and sparkle to the writing, it’s that sweet spot between just exactly what my id wants and the more rational part of me that is impressed with the world-building and plotting and character motivations, that I legitimately respect the fic. It’s such a great example of what Obi-Wan would be like if freed from the restraints he puts on himself as a Jedi–he has power, sure, but it’s also such intelligence and insight, such lethality and being predatory in all the right moments, the way you really, really understand how Obi-Wan is dangerous when he puts all of his skills to less noble purposes.   And the plot is good, it’s a great cast of different versions of the characters, the older versions having been dumped back in time and are running around to fix things in their own way, including a time out to go free the slaves on Tatooine and, of course, have more run-ins with the Jedi. I love that there are light saber battles, I love that they’re not just idling around, they’re doing stuff, moving the pieces around from the shadows, in addition to their complicated relationship developing further. I am H O O K E D on this fic and it’s honestly one of the most satisfying I’ve read in the fandom yet, it’s one of those that I pretty much drop everything else to go read when there’s a new chapter, it’s one that I’m torn between tripping over myself to read everything as fast as I can because I want more and forcing myself to go slower becaus I want to savor it, it’s one of those that I never want to end, but also I want all of it to be able to read everything right now. ✦ Negotiation by Glare, obi-wan/anakin & ahsoka & bail & cast, NSFW, modern au, serial killer au, dark themes, dark!obi-wan, 73.7k wip    Over a year ago, Coruscant Police Detective Anakin Skywalker vanished without a trace while hunting the prolific serial killer known within the media as “The Negotiator”.    I’ve done several recs for this fic, but am writing a new one to encompass the entire fic rather than piecemeal, so those that are new to this fic will have a better one to hopefully encourage them to read it! I feel like I hardly know where to start with this one, because it’s another that I’ve been reading as each chapter comes out and I think it might be my favorite of the author’s work. It’s a fic that initially caught my attention, despite the seemingly incompatible concept of the character, but what got me is that this isn’t canon Obi-Wan, but he shares so much of the traits of him, like what Obi-Wan would be without his unbreakable morals and faith from the movies and the show, that if you changed those things about him, you would get this fascinating look at the way he uses that charm and gentlemanly manner and incredibly insight to do such terrible things, to focus on the person he loves (Anakin) more than anyone.    And that’s the other thing that gets me, the way their relationship is played, that it takes so long for Anakin to come around is to the fic’s credit, that it’s not dragged out beyond what it should have been, that instead it needed that space to show the way he was stripped of his defiance bit by bit, just tiny step by tiny step. That this is never portrayed as healthy or anything other than Stockholm Syndrome, the fic is very aware of what it’s doing, but there’s a dark charisma to it, that I find myself rooting for it, even when it’s clear that it’s a terrible thing. The fic is very good at balancing those two things–the fascination with that dark yet beautiful dynamic, obsessive love that can still be genuine in its own way, even as it’s awful. It’s charming, even as you don’t forget that Anakin has been conditioned into this, you still see the layers being peeled away from him to get at something that’s underneath that, something that says a lot about who Anakin Skywalker is.    It’s a modern AU, it’s a serial killer!Obi-Wan AU, it’s a story about Anakin being manipulated into dependence on him, it’s a lot of things that I might normally not be that keen on, but between the fic visibly embracing those things while still keeping so many echoes of their original selves, while hitting all those elements that made so many of us fans of Hannibal, that it’s honestly one of my favorites in the fandom. ✦ flowers for a ghost by QueenWithABeeThrone, obi-wan/anakin & cast, modern au (sort of), 42.2k    Anakin Skywalker’s had a rough go of it, from being imprisoned to losing his hand to remembering an entire past life. He’s only looking for a place to stay the night when he comes to Obi-wan’s doorstep.    I’ll note ahead of time that I haven’t finished this fic yet, but I’m far enough in that I want to include it! It’s the first part of a long sort-of-modern-AU where the characters are reincarnated into current day Earth and are all kind of giant messes, especially Anakin, and this is the story of him trying to recover from just how much he’s been damaged along the way. Not only is there his previous life as Darth Vader to contend with that haunts him, but also the terrible things that have happened to him in this life, the further terrible choices that he’s made that landed him here and weigh him down. It’s a fic that’s a very long, slow process (and very much a slow burn between Obi-Wan and Anakin) because there’s so much for Anakin to wade through and so little progress he can make at any given time. There’s so much about this fic that’s bittersweet and haunting and lovely in a really heartbreaking way–it’s moving towards the better, step by step, but it’s a long road and it’s fragile and brittle the whole way there.    But, ahhh, the relationship and the utter need Anakin has for Obi-Wan and how this situation is both id-pleasing (accidental Force bond, yessssss, give me that always!) and all about doing the slow, almost daily life of recovery, both for Anakin himself as a person and for his relationship with Obi-Wan. There’s a sneaking plot here as well, there’s a lot of characters they run into, there’s an expansive world unfolding here, but at it’s heart it’s a fic about Anakin’s recovery and trying to piece himself back together–trying to find the will to want to piece himself back together, after everything. And the length of it is necessary (even as I scream at them to just kiss already) to show that that’s something that’s not easy or quick. This is a lovely read and I’m adoring it so much. ✦ The World Undone by lilyconrad, obi-wan/anakin & ahsoka & maul & cast, nsfw, sith!obi-wan, 143.3k    Anakin Skywalker, proud symbol of the strength and purity of the Jedi Order, is the target of a strange and handsome Sith named Obi-Wan, whose only goal seems to be pulling Skywalker down into the dark with him.    I’ll note ahead of time that I haven’t finished this fic yet, this rec is based on the first 2/3rds of the fic, but I’m far enough in that I want to include it! Oh, I hardly know where to start with this fic! I admit that it took me a bit to get into, for personal reasons (I usually turn right around at fic where someone other than Obi-Wan trained Anakin if it isn’t a complete disaster, I’m not a big fan of Maul’s character/thought Dooku or Sidious would have been in his role), but those aren’t really criticisms, they’re just things that popped up on my own personal radar. I mention this because, if someone’s tastes are like mine, I want to encourage continuing with this one because once the story kicked into gear for me, I just got swept away in it, I kept reading and reading because I wanted to know where it was going. Once Obi-Wan and Anakin started interacting regularly, once the attraction between them was unable to be ignored (even if it took awhile for some resolution!), and once the main mystery of the story got underway (which I would say was about halfway through when I read this fic), it became a really well-plotted and paced story.    The fic does so many things that I really love about it, right down to the language has shades of something like poetry but the author makes it work, it never had me doing that, “wtf does that even mean” feeling, but instead… oh, like when they finally have time to be together, when they have just enough space to breathe for it and there’s a line that really struck me: Obi-Wan only drove in harder and faster, a shooting star in free-fall along its own doomed line toward earth until it flashed and burnt itself out in its own flare of beautiful white heat inside the velvet night of Anakin’s body. What might have been too flowery in another fic, I really loved this line, I love that it was highlighted their relationship, how passionate this Obi-Wan was about Anakin, how desperate Anakin is to clutch at something, to have Obi-Wan in him, as a steadying presence and to fill him up, that that’s both a culmination of the long attraction between them and shows how their relationship works here. Because this isn’t canon, but it still has so many elements of it, the way they care about other people (especially Anakin and Ahsoka’s relationship has several meaningful scenes, it’s very much an important part of Anakin’s character), but they revolve around each other, Anakin still needs Obi-Wan like that.    The reveals take awhile to happen, but they’re worth waiting for, because they’re satisfying and so interesting, the slow pealing back of the layers and hints, until we finally get proper flashbacks and you understand how the characters came to where they were. The author knows how to pace a story, how to write something long without feeling like it was dragged out, that it takes its time, but it’s not padded to hell and back, and that kind of solidity is incredibly appreciated. It’s one of those fics that just feels… smooth and solid, one of those that’s satisfying to have such a long fic that knows where it’s going and you can feel that even from the beginning, whether or not it grows some here and there or expands in a few unexpected places, it keeps on topic and is paced just right for me. And, of course, I enjoy so much the way Obi-Wan and Anakin are slowly coming together here, that it’s a long path for them to take, but each step forward is sure-footed and will get there. ✦ you knock me out, i fall apart by blackalien, obi-wan/anakin/padme & han/luke/leia & ahsoka & cast, 64.8k wip    ( aka: the one where anakin was a sith lord for literally an hour, everyone is alive, and they’re actually happy )    This fic was my happy place for two days straight while I read it, because it’s everything I was hoping to get from it–it’s a collection of non-linear scenes spanning from ROTS to probably twenty years into the future, showing the snippets of their lives, the family they all build together, while balancing something so incredibly charming with the occasional moments of absolute heartbreak. Primarily, this fic is definitely about making a happy family AU, whether it’s Anakin keeping the people he loves close or eventually he and Padme convince Obi-Wan to join them or giving Ahsoka a family to come home to or getting to see the twins grow up, but it’s also about how Anakin is never going to be entirely emotionally stable and about how Ahsoka bears the scars from being too young in the war and about how Obi-Wan is so solitary for so long and about how it’s not always easy to grow up a Skywalker for either Luke or Leia.    The fic is really good about making those moments genuinely serious, it’s not really a cracky fic and the serious moments are genuinely serious, and it’s… I think of it as being like The Clone Wars show, only trending in a positive direction instead of negative, where sometimes it’s heartbreaking, sometimes it’s ridiculously charming, and sometimes it’s just straight up cute fluff, but all of it is well done. And I cannot convey enough of that sense of charm, that kind of sharpness to the happy AU that makes it so good to read, the kind that makes it straight into my fannish heart, rather than just me seeking out fluff because I need it to soothe me. This one captures my feelings and my imagination, it’s ridiculously engaging and one of those fics of my heart. ✦ World Come Undone by crazyundeadfairy, obi-wan/anakin (maybe?) & luke, 68.3k wip    Unexpected things happen when ObiWan takes Luke to Tatooine.    Oh, lord, this fic. I cannot tell you how hard this fic grabbed me and would not let go until I finished it! There are a couple of caveats: The first two chapters are fairly slow, a lot of monologuing over things actually happening, but once Luke starts talking, it kicks into gear and doesn’t let go. It’s also a WIP and hasn’t been updated in a few years, but the author has gone years between updates before, so you never know, but more importantly! You get so much of the good stuff in what’s already here! So, while I would have loved to have had the rest of the fic, I’m genuinely content with what we had here as well, because let me tell you about my feelings on Obi-Wan raising Luke, who is this amazingly sweet little moppet that I was instantly in love with, as well as Anakin eventually finds out and tries to steal Luke away but gets in his own way too much and finds himself trapped in a situation that he’s not sure how to get out of.    I was initially skimming ahead to just read the confrontation between Obi-Wan and Anakin when they saw each other again, just to see if the fic picked up, and found myself getting sucked in because the fic does a great job with each scene making me want to read the next and the next and the next, so I had to go back to my original place and then I just hungrily read the entire thing because Anakin wants to take Luke and kill Obi-Wan, but he can’t because he wants Luke to love him and that won’t happen if Luke knows he killed the only father he’s ever known, yet Anakin still burns that Obi-Wan has taken Luke, despite that Obi-Wan has always talked about Anakin to Luke, always told him stories, and Luke can already feel that there’s still love there, no matter how much anger and hate is held onto, sometimes on both sides, after all that’s happened.    It’s one of those fics where they’re forced to be semi-civil to each other again, but underneath is all this emotional tension and hurt that made my fannish heart absolutely ache while reading it, yet was delicious candy at the same time because it hit my id perfectly. Getting well-written fic that does justice to the iddy concept it has is such a rare treat in fandom and I love this fic for doing that for me! It’s one of those situations that I would dream up without trying to properly justify it in my head just because I wanted it, but the fic actually sold me on it and doesn’t shortchange that Anakin is full of rage and hates Obi-Wan, even as you feel how much of it is borne out of still loving him.    Obi-Wan is fantastic, he’s so steady and solid, but that doesn’t mean he’s passive or without his own anger on Anakin’s actions, even as he’s still willing to try to help him again. And Anakin feels so right to me, that he’s not there yet, he’s not doing any of this for the right reasons, his love for Luke is still selfish and obsessive, but there’s hope in him and you can see the sparks of maybe something still good in there. And I’m labeling this as Obi-Wan/Anakin because the author has written slash fic for them before and the relationship is very central to the story, even if there’s no kissing, and Anakin’s relationship with Padme is very important and I just really, really was hit spot on by this fic, okay. So good. ✦ Futurus (-a -um) by cadesama, obi-wan/anakin/padme & cast, time travel, 60.8k wip    Cracked hyperdrive? No problem. Just hold it together with the Force. Time travel? Well. That could be a bigger problem.    This is a fic I read very, very early on in my time in Star Wars fandom, so I can’t say how it would hold up for me if I tried to go back and read it, but it will always be one of those fics that’s dear to me because it helped tip me from shipping just Anidala into also shipping Obikin and Obianidala. And so I’m leaving the rec as I originally wrote it, as I think it does a good job of conveying my reaction to the fic!    I have two caveats about this fic before I begin: It’s a WIP that hasn’t been updated in about a year, so I’m not sure if it will be. But it gets enough satisfying stuff in so even though it ends on a cliffhanger, I found it absolutely worth reading! And that it’s very fast in the beginning, there’s not much time to build up suspense before the reveals are already happening. This isn’t a fic I wound up reading for the suspense or reveals by the time I got into the thick of it, this is a fic that’s about the building relationship between Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme. Previous to this fic, I’d never shipped anything but Anakin/Padme, so their relationship being strong here, being absolutely important to Anakin’s pov, while the shifting nature of his relationship with Obi-Wan is slowly changing, works for me, it eased me in at just the right pacing and made me actually really, really want it.    What the fic does the most beautifully for me, though, is how Anakin is so beloved and so special and so brilliant, but he’s also an obnoxious pain in the ass, the way Padme and Obi-Wan both love him dearly, but he’s also a dumbass, oh, that worked for me because that’s exactly it, that’s how they relate to him. The plot part of the story was interesting as well, I definitely want to know where things are going, how this will affect history, and I love love love that the PT characters were the ones thrown forward into the OT’s time, that’s where my heart really is, and this fic just completely and totally charmed the hell out of me! I especially appreciate that it gently eased me into shipping this OT3 in a way that worked for me and got me to be able to actually see it. ✦ Clarity by anecdotalist, obi-wan/anakin & anakin/padme & cast, 73.7k wip    Anakin’s jealousy leads to the start of something new between him and Obi-Wan and a lot of frank discussions about things they should have talked about but didn’t in canon.    This is one of those fics that I’m going to write a terrible rec for, which is frustrating because I very thoroughly enjoyed it and it’s one of those that’s… one of those solid reads in that it’s satisfying and having 60k+ of it to tear through was a delight because I really got to sink into it and it has so much… idk, it’s not quite breathing room, because it’s not really slice-of-life, there’s events happening and things moving towards Big Events, but at the same time, I feel like there is breathing room for the Obi-Wan/Anakin relationship to develop, especially as it doesn’t crowd out Anakin’s relationship with Padme. It’s definitely focused on the Obikin side of things, much of the point of the fic is Obi-Wan settling into his feelings and the new direction his life is taking, that it’s… I love that it’s not this big, huge, overtly emotional thing, because that’s not who Obi-Wan is, it’s much more still-waters-run-deep that works for me, like this is someone who may struggle with feelings, but he knows how to get to where he needs, and there’s this really just… warm and comfortable air between him and Anakin for so much of the fic.    I think maybe that’s my favorite part, now that I’m trying to put this into words, that even when there’s shit happening elsewhere, when the plot stuff ramps things up in later chapters, there’s still a warm connection between Obi-Wan and Anakin, I trust that they love each other and they know they want to be together, that Obi-Wan knows himself and Anakin is still kind of a mess, he’s just got almost no self-control, and thus Obi-Wan tempers him and puts him back when he needs it. The three of them (Padme as well) have this… they don’t necessarily fit together perfectly, but there’s the sense that they’re working on it, that Obi-Wan and Padme fill in the various edges of Anakin’s character, how the three of them just fit together, it really is supremely satisfying. And there are loads of little touches (I love that Bant gets several good scenes! I love that Obi-Wan’s path is departing from the Jedi, but not in a judgmental sort of way! I love the way Obi-Wan and Anakin meditate together! I loved Obi-Wan being in the room with Palpatine and Anakin, so Anakin follows Obi-Wan’s lead instead and it subtly changes so many things!) and I love that this is a fic that’s about gently turning Anakin’s relationships to the better, that I felt good reading this, even as I’m eyeing future chapters with trepidation. ✦ Sun Kissed by Vee017, obi-wan/anakin & mace & yoda & cast, nsfw, dark themes, past sexual abuse, 81.7k wip    Being on a world that supports slavery is one thing. Buying a slave and bringing him into Republic space is entirely another.    I admit, I usually turn right around at fics like this, I’m not big on AUs where Obi-Wan didn’t become a Jedi or where Anakin was never found and instead became a sex slave, but I liked the author’s other fics and I was terribly curious about this one, so I picked it up and found myself just sort of quietly falling in love. When I read the summary, I had a lot of expectations about the tropes, based on previous experience with this kind of fic, but this one surprised me where there’s something really almost gentle about the way it writes the characters and their relationship, how it’s been almost 80k and there are definitely feelings and being in love, but they weren’t really in the right place for a relationship yet. The fic does a lovely job of establishing Anakin’s healing process and their daily lives, that it uses this time not to just drag things out, but to clear away the things that need to be cleared away first, that Anakin has to truly be ready, not just wanting more with Obi-Wan, but truly being ready to go there, and this fic gently keeps them on that path.    And that’s what really makes me enjoy this fic, that it’s well written in a way that’s easy to read, but also well written in a way that builds something here, that I can legitimately enjoy beyond just iddy kink reasons. I’d have read this story with or without the tropes! And it’s hard to believe that it’s as long as it is, because it was just so easy to pick up and read and read and read, there’s something so smooth about the pacing and writing style, something that pulls me along without me even realizing it! And I love that there’s enough resolution by this point that I think the WIP factor doesn’t matter too much–though, it’s been in progress for ten years now, it still gets slowly updated, so I don’t doubt that it’ll continue to be so.    It’s a fic that I went into expecting it to be one of those early 00s types of fics that were cheesy and appealed to my id for the OTT kink, but instead found a fic that was much more gentle than expected, that took its time and wasn’t about dragging out the angst forever, but instead that healing took time and that the majority of the fic was actually pretty calm and laid back, the most exciting parts (previous to the most recent chapters) were Anakin’s frustration with himself to not be over his past more quickly, that he still had nightmares sometimes. Sure, once things start heating up, there’s more action and plot going on, but at its heart this is still a fic about being a slow burn relationship and it hasn’t strayed from that–I have no doubt that it’ll get there, but I love that it’s taking its time to do so, because the journey there is the important part. ✦ Second Chances by Driverpicksthemooseic (Ratkinzluver33), obi-wan/anakin & han/luke & ahsoka & leia & cast, de-aged fic, 121.3k    Leia wasn’t convinced inviting evil incarnate to join them in fighting the Empire was exactly one of Obi-Wan’s brightest ideas.    This is a delightful cracky fic where, mid-ANH, the Force decides to de-age Obi-Wan and Anakin by about twenty years and then Anakin decides to defect to the Alliance and be a scary over-protective helicopter parent when he finds out Luke and Leia are his kids and also oh yeah falls totally in love with Obi-Wan. And then more characters from The Clone Wars and Rebels are pulled in, the plot goes off in its own direction, and it’s this fun, easy to read fic that I just sailed through! It’s very long, but it’s focused on a fairly large cast of characters (though not so large that you can’t keep track, especially since they’re all characters you’re invested in already) that’s about the greater web of connections between the SW characters. I picked it up for the Obi-Wan/Anakin ship, which is actually a relatively small part of the overall story, it’s really more a group fic about how Vader defecting to the Alliance changes a lot of things, and it’s about Anakin angsting a whole lot about trying to balance himself and his emotions and not always doing a stellar job of it, it’s about the people he’s hurt along the way and how some are able to be won over, but others take a much longer time.    I read practically the whole thing in a single day, that’s how easy it was to sail through, and it’s one of those delightfully tropey fics where I’m just so here for de-aging fic (why is there not more in fandom?? I want it!!) and it was nice to have a longfic to sink my teeth into again! It’s one of those stories that really hits a person’s id if you’re into this kind of thing and I am definitely in fandom to read about helicopter parent Anakin Skywalker who’s practically the same physical age as his kids. :D :D :D ✦ White Rabbits by Butterfly, obi-wan/anakin & luke & leia & han & cast, NSFW, time travel, 102.5k wip    Through the Force, everything is connected. Anakin and Obi-Wan find this out first-hand. I do have a couple of caveats about the fic–it hasn’t been updated in close to a year (but it’s also been in progress for over 10 years, so the author does keep coming back) and the beginning of the fic (probably about the first third at least?) is very much the plot moving the characters rather than the characters moving the plot, that they don’t really react to things in a way that feels organic to their own motivations, but rather where the scene wants them to go. And I do have some trouble wrapping my mind around the idea that Anakin wouldn’t be all over his kids, even as the fic gently nudges him away from them because of jealousy and then fear for Padme’s life. I mention these things because I want to encourage readers beyond them (as I always do with recs) because it’s a story that I read over the course of a couple of days and the writing is really smooth and just so nicely sailed along and it very much has a plot and does a really lovely job of balancing the five rotating character povs (Obi-Wan, Anakin, Luke, Leia, and Han), of throwing this tangle of characters together and keeping up with group scenes. The fic’s plot is absolutely intriguing and the author is taking their time with it without feeling like it was dragged out, it’s almost sort of hard to believe that it’s a fic that’s over 100k because it was just so easy to keep reading and never felt bogged down or padded out just to up the word count.    And once the fic settles into the story, as Obi-Wan and Anakin discover more and more about this future, as they’re thrown into a situation where Anakin has to face what he’s capable of (once he hears about Vader) and how the fic sort of… balances between trying to reconcile that/fix it and also just sort of avoiding it by going I WON’T DO THAT I WILL AVOID IT, which is actually a pretty perfectly Anakin Skywalker reaction. The author also knows how to write UST while still giving some resolution, that Obi-Wan and Anakin are very attracted to each other and it’s being thrown into this mind-boggling situation where Anakin desperately needs someone to help and support him, he desperately needs someone to cling onto, that seeing this future where the Jedi are gone and this horribleness is possible, that finally breaks that last hurdle and jams them together. I love that Padme may not be here, but Anakin’s love for her never is dialed down a notch, that so much of why he wants to go back is to save her, that he still loves her just as furiously and obsessively as ever, even as he loves Obi-Wan as well. And the sex scenes were lovely, the way Anakin is desperate to grind himself against Obi-Wan is lovely, as well as the brief moments where Obi-Wan’s hands slide lower down his back, not quite ghosting over the prize there, but the implication of the future, that one day he may open Anakin up and push into him is there, and just the right amount of promise of it.    But also! The later chapters are starting to get into just what all is in this world, what’s left that they might still remember, that they’re still working to uncover just what happened, both to them and to this world that may be their future. And I do love that it’s Leia who pushes for them not to change things, because they worked damn hard for this future, because they fought and bled for it, because she won’t give up this hope or gamble it away on something that might be better or might be worse, that who she is, everything that’s made her Leia Organa, could disappear, it makes perfect sense that she would try to convince them to stay, and it allows the fic the time and room to explore these characters from the past in this future. It’s a fic that’s definitely a WIP and may take a long time to update again, but I greatly enjoyed what was here and it was just so very easy to sink into and I appreciated having that over the past week! Plus several Obikin kissing scenes yes thank you! ✦ The Reality of Change by midnight_vision, obi-wan/anakin/padme & ahsoka, time travel, 185.1k    Padmé dies on Mustafar and wakes up in the past, about a year before everything falls apart. She’s determined to make sure none of it happens again, and with some help, she tries to expose Palpatine for what he really is. But even if Anakin and the Republic can be saved, that doesn’t mean life will be easy.    At the time of this post, I’ve only read about half of this fic, but it fits theme and I wanted to include it! But it’s definitely a rec based on half the fic so far: I could have sworn I’d done a rec for this fic before, but I cannot find it anywhere in my files, so I’m going to assume I haven’t actually and do one fresh. I am always here for Obianidala fic and I’m always here for time travel fic, so I picked this one up and tore through pretty much all of it over the course of a few days! I do have a couple of caveats about it, the biggest being that the Jedi are used as antagonists, even against established canon (like, they’ve specifically said they don’t keep people against their will, that they wouldn’t force Anakin to stay), which can be jarring sometimes, so you gotta roll with the premise of them being villains, but when the fic is all about the domestic trio learning to figure out their relationship, the fic is at its strongest and it’s just really heart-warming and delightful. It’s a long fic, so it’s a bit of a slow burn, not in that there’s lack of resolution, but in that there’s no hurry to get there before everyone is ready, instead it’s a much more natural pace that I really enjoyed.    I love that it’s a Padme time travel fic as well, because I very rarely see one about her, especially because she doesn’t know everything that happened and it gives her a chance to work through what happened between her and Anakin on Mustafar, that she has to work through all that fear and mistrust, because this Anakin hasn’t done those things, but she has to process that they did happen, that it could have happened, and that’s something that takes quite awhile to get over. There’s also some lovely Padme & Ahsoka friendship scenes, there’s a whole lot of Padme telling people what she knows, there’s a lot of Anakin having to deal with feeling kept out of the loop, that he’s still got anger issues and isn’t emotionally stable, but Obi-Wan and Padme have better tools this time around, there’s a good amount of Obi-Wan/Anakin relationship building, and there’s a lot of satisfying fixing of the timeline, including killing Palpatine plot!    The fic is at its best when it’s about the breathing room the Obi-Wan/Anakin/Padme trio has or when they’re interacting with Ahsoka, when the story is going towards fixing things, that’s when my heart is happiest and I just really had a lot of fun reading this, especially since it was lengthy and I loved being able to tear into it and read read read for so many pages! ✦ Sigh No More by edenwolfie, obi-wan/anakin/padme & ahsoka & luke & leia & cast, 158.2k wip    Anakin makes slightly better choices, Obi-Wan is a Mess™ and Padmé deserves none of this. AU from Mustafar onward with liberal manipulation of canon to culminate in some angsty, fluffy, domestic fix-it because we all deserve better.    I believe I’ve recommended this fic at least once before? But now that it’s up to 22 chapters, I’ve caught up on the fic and it was time to write a fresh rec for it. I do have a few things you need to just roll with the fic for–that the characters go hide out on Tatooine instead of fighting back, that Obi-Wan is often more indecisive than he would be, that Anakin’s emotional problems tend to go away more easily than I think they would. But the point of the fic is to write a really long, really revel-in-it story about the domesticity of these characters on Tatooine, to just wholly embrace digging into the slice of life stuff in this remote, isolated area where it’s just the three of them + the twins + Ahsoka. It’s a story that has the room to breathe with the characters, that it’s not about dragging things out, but instead that the whole point of the story is that slow, incrimental moving forward with the relationship(s). It’s a story that I pick up when I want something where the characters are (for the most part) taken away from galatic level action and instead are given something like a peaceful life (as much as one can get post-ROTS, of course) and I just want to roll around in something that’s hopeful and kind.    The length is nice as well, because it really gets across that this is a story that’s meant to be a slow burn and a slow build even once things finally do catch fire. As mentioned, I don’t feel like it’s dragging things out, but instead that the slow process is the whole point, that it’s about building their relationships, their life here, step by step. It’s domesticity and slice-of-life and really reveling in it to the fic’s heart’s content. But also omg I admit I’m definitely here for the sex scene, because Anakin and Padme are adorable, Obi-Wan and Anakin had a very pretty frottage scene earlier, but then chapter 22 was exactly what I wanted–where they finally have the time and both are in the right place for something more intense, something deeper. And, boy, does Anakin find that he enjoys being held down, that he has Obi-Wan’s attention all on him, that he likes the way he feels when he’s pressed down onto the bed and held there, when he’s filled up with Obi-Wan, who opens him up with such care and affection, until there’s no other noise in his head, that all the anxieties and fears and insecurities are pushed out, as Obi-Wan pushes into him. I’m really not kidding that I will read that a thousand times because Anakin needs it a thousand times and Obi-Wan being able to give that to Anakin is so good for him as well. There’s also a lot of cute stuff with Ahsoka coming and going, watching the twins grow up, and more! But I can’t lie, I’m here for Anakin Skywalker, my precious child, getting the happy life I always wanted for him.

My Galaxy Fold display is damaged after a day
Samsung’s new rebooted Galaxy arrives this week with one job: it just needs to not break. I’d already spent thousands of words breaking down the ins and outs of the product the first time around. This round, on the other hand, was more about making sure everything worked.
Back in April, I was among the reviewers whose device worked perfectly well. I toted the original Fold around the Bay Area without a problem, much to the amusement of curious co-workers. Samsung collected the devices soon after, as it went back to the drawing board due to issues with other units, but mine remained fully in tact.
This time out, however, I wasn’t so lucky. I pulled the Fold from my pocket while standing in line at CVS after work the other day. I opened it up and spotted something new nestled between the lock screen’s flapping butterfly wings. There was a brightly colored, amorphous blob. You can see it there in the photo at the top of the story (as well as a zoomed-in version below). It’s not huge. It’s maybe just under a centimeter across — and it’s a bit tricky to photograph.
In the grand scheme of first-gen foldable display problems, this isn’t a huge one, judging by photos from those who’ve had issues with the first model. In that case, devices were sent back with an entire side blacked out (in many cases the result of peeling back a laminate that resembled the protective layer devices ship with). Still, it’s not a great look after about 27 hours with the device, considering that it wasn’t dropped on concrete, dunked in water or stepped on. And the placement smack dab in the center dampens the effect of a 7.3-inch screen.
If I had to guess, I’d say it was pressing the display to close the device that did it. Samsung has since collected the device and will be taking it apart (likely in Korea) to find out what went wrong. We’ll update accordingly.
youtube
We can’t say the company didn’t warn us. As I noted the other day, Samsung issued a video prior to launch, advising users to “Just use a light touch,” B/W the footnote, “Do not apply excessive pressure to it.” The Fold itself came with ample paperwork warning against:
Excessive pressure
Placing objects like keys on the screen before folding
Exposing the Fold to water or dust
Adding your own screen protector to the existing screen protector
Keeping the device next to easily deactivated objects like credit cards and implanted medical devices
There was nothing inside the device while folded. I didn’t get it wet or feed it after midnight, and there’s no visible damage to the laminate layer, so I can’t really say definitively what happened here. And while the screen is certainly still usable, I think I’d probably be…irked if I had just paid $2,000 for a handset and had to deal with a large, rainbow colored blob in the exact center of the screen.
Part of the white-glove service Samsung is rolling out here is a $149 screen replacement. We got a comment from Samsung on the matter, and it sounds like this particular issue might fall within normal use that wouldn’t require an additional fee. Here’s what the company has to say on the matter:
We have seen an enthusiastic response to the launch of the Galaxy Fold in several markets over the past few weeks, with thousands of consumers enjoying the unique experience it offers.
The Galaxy Fold is a first-of-its-kind device, made with new materials and technologies that allow it to open and close just like a book.
We encourage Galaxy Fold owners to read the care instructions included in the box and in the product manual available online. Products used within these guidelines are covered under warranty. If they have any questions, Galaxy Fold owners can consult with Samsung product specialists through the Galaxy Fold Premier Service any time, any day.
The “products used within these guidelines are covered under warranty” appears to be the pertinent bit here.
It’s hard to say how widespread these issues are. When the device officially goes on sale in North America on Friday, there will be significantly more of these in the wild, at which point we’ll know more definitively whether this was a very specific anomaly.
Anyone who reviews products for a living knows that these things can happen. I’ve had review headphones that sounded like electrified tin cans, only to swap them with the company for the real deal. Manufacturing defects can occur with review units and commercial products, alike. Generally, such things aren’t cause for concern (and manufacturing issues are usually covered by warranties), but in this case it’s certainly worth highlighting, given the first-gen product’s history with display issues.
We’ll certainly let you know how this shakes out and whether whatever conclusion Samsung ultimately reaches would fall under the warranty of the Fold’s fine print or whether users might want to budget an additional $149, just in case.

She had to get a new dental and health insurance thing and they were supposed to start taking money directly from her paycheck. They ll take it this upcoming paycheck and yeah. Well I need braces and my mom said that since it just started I can t get them. Is that true? I had a car accident a year ago the insurance company claims that it was fraud because the story didn t match up in the euo so now they taking me to the supreme court this is the third time they didn t pay anything and infact I was hit from behind. It been a year since we are going to court. Now they send another summons saying that settle of the case if they didn t pay me anything y r they still bothering me. There was no damage done to either car and no injuries. The guy said he was not going to do anything about it since there was no damages. My daughter gave him her information (insurance etc).    I called the guy to make sure everything was ok, he said nothing happened to his car or himself but he went ahead and opened a claim because he thought he had to do that.   I know that if he decides to ask for damages the insurance will pay. My question to you is if he decides not to ask for damages, will my insurance still go up and will she get points in her driver s license.   Also, I d like to add that we live in California. I have not talked to my insurance (AAA) yet. Thank you <br/><br/>How much usually insurance cost when you lease a car?<br/>How much usually insurance cost when you lease a car?<br/><br/>Cheapest auto insurance?<br/>Cheapest auto insurance?<br/><br/> I m 57, am learning to drive a car, will need the best and cheapest car insurance, how will I know which is re <br/> i just want to be able to drive my car, and know there is help   there for me <br/><br/>Cash Value Term Life?<br/>Is there a Term Life policy that builds cash value? I heard thee is one with a great interest rate thats guarenteed? Sounds too good to be true.<br/><br/>Car insurance and crash?<br/> ok well last night it was rainy and i was going down a street i tryed to stop and take a turn but i lost control and went over the curb scraped the left front of my car pretty bad. the damage was my front bumper is pretty much destroyed, the mirror broke off, wrecked the front left tire, and a huge long dent on the front left top of the car just before reaching the front hood and also a hole near the door and now i cant open the front door all the way. after i had to change the tire and i drove home.    this was my first crash involving car insurance and im 17. will i still be able to drive if the car insurance covers it? i really dont know whats about to happen. <br/><br/>Where to find life insurance for someone like me?<br/>i am a disalbed (Cerebral palsy, deaf) 45 year old non-smoking woman. no too many  doctor visits a year. maybe once or twice.  looking for life insurance, something that will fit my low income. <br/><br/>Insurance cost/ 19 yr/ female/ Toyota Celica?<br/> I have had my license since I was sixteen years old.   No accidents, no tickets, nothing.   I have had drivers training and completed the program.   I currently have a G2 License, drive without anyone.   I live in Ontario.   What do you think the insurance costs would be approximately?    What do you pay for a sports car, if you have one?    Yes I know its apparently considered a sports car.. I dont want it for the speed. I like the interior and look of the car. Thankyou!<br/><br/>Life insurance?<br/>I don t think I was too clear on my question. I had a friend that died and left me as beneficiary on his life insurance policy. I was wondering if there is a certain amount of time I have to file the paperwork or if it expires after a certain amount of time.<br/><br/>Insurance on a crashed car?<br/> Today someone crashed into my car, anyway both cars have minor damage but they re trying to say it was my fault and claiming on their insurance etc. etc. Anyway, i was just wondering if the price of insurance increases for a driver who has crashed, how long does it go up for and if they don t insure the car during that time (i may be at uni) Will the increased charges be saved for until they next insure the car? <br/><br/>No insurance and expired tags in kentucky?<br/> I got a ticket for no insurance and expired tags in Louisville Ky, I ve never neen in any trouble before with anything not even a parking ticket I just could nt afford the insurance and tags. Whatare the chances of serving jail time for this? I know inKy, it can pack a 90 day sentence please answer I m kinda freaking out. <br/><br/> Car accident no insurance no driver license, what can I do about it? <br/> I got into a car accident last week, and it was the other party s fault. however, the guy doesn t have car insurance or a valid driver license. The cops came and did a report, but never made the guy show his license or give him a ticket (according to the report I got from the police). What can I do about the damage that he did? Can I sue him to get the amount? Shouldn t they impound his car and arrest him? It was a huge accident, my car is messed up in the back now.     btw, I m from Northern California <br/><br/> Using friend s home address for car insurance, does that effect his taxes or his personal car insurance? <br/> Its plain and simple and I know its insurance fraud if I were to use a different address but I have no choice since I m under 25 and the area(Toronto, Canada) I live in has skyrocketing auto insurance premiums for tweens especially when you re a male. So No other choice left. I d like to know if there s any legal liabilities on my friend if I use his address ?? Also I d like to know if it effects his personal auto insurance premium. Please help me drive my car with the peace of mind of being covered by insurance. Thank you. <br/><br/>Will my homeowners  insurance rebuild my deck?<br/> My home was build in 2004, the back deck was not built properly, which we found out later.  The people build with the deck with the wrong type of nails, they did not use deck nails/screws.  Anyway,  now all the wood is splitting everywhere on the deck.  The almost 20foot wood poles that hold the deck are warping.  I am afraid to even walk on the deck.  Should I file a claim to find out if my homeowners insurance will repair the deck?  I believe this deck is a hazard.  We won t even use the deck anymore.  Do you think the homeower s would consider paying some the cost to rebuild? <br/><br/>Disability Insurance?<br/>Okay, if the employer is  paying the premiums for disability insurance for its employees, do the  employees have to pay taxes on the said insurance, even though they are not using it  at this time?   Legitimate answers please. Thank you. <br/><br/>Who insures the insurance companies?<br/> Just out of curiosity who insures the insurance companies? Do they insure themselves? If so, due to all the bureaucratic BS do they have to pay a deductible to themselves? Or are they insured by other companies? Is it just one big circle?    For example: Company X s building gets destroyed by a tornado, do they pay for everything or are they insured by Company Y. <br/><br/>Will I be paying two deductibles or one for two car accidents different insurances?<br/>Yes, it was my fault. Another question: If I don t want to repair my car (I have only minor scratches, I can live with), I don t have to pay deductible correct? <br/><br/>Is there any programs in Tennessee (US) to help single mothers with car insurance?<br/> Umm NO.  That is not an option.  I am single mother and I don t have anyone to shuttle me and my daughter around.  I live in a VERY small town and there is no bus line.  A cab to the nearest grocery store or doctor is WAYY to expensive.  I have to have transportation.  Besides--my piece of $hit car wouldn t sell for much anyways...<br/><br/>Wat do u think insurance would cost for a 1967 mustang?<br/>i try to find it on insurance company pages but it dont help<br/><br/>Should I go through my car insurance company or not?<br/> My car was parked on a decline, stalled, and ran into the back of my friends wagon.   My repair quote is about $940, hers is about $615, at a total of about $1555.   The excess I have to pay towards insurance repairs is $1045 (standard excess, age excess for being under 25, and some flexi-excess p.o.s).   At the moment I only have enough money to fix her car, although that means waiting another few months to fix mine, and I m impatient. Hers needs to be fixed asap for roadworthy and registration.   I also have the option of finding a new bumper for hers at a much cheaper price, although that is proving difficult.   Also, my insurance company only likes their choice of repairer. My panel shop has done jobs for the company before, but I m not certain if they will let me use them. I won t have anyone else repair my car, as the money was going to go to repainting a new bonnet instead of repairing, which insurance won t cover. On another note, I m not sure how long going through insurance will take.    So my question is, do I go through insurance, even though I might not get to use my panel shop and it will cost me almost the same?   Or do I leave it, and do what I can to fix my friends car cheaper? Then just suck it up and wait to have the money for mine, therefore also saving a rise on my insurance premium and a drop in my rating. <br/><br/>Will VA patients be requird to get health insurance?<br/>I do not have health insurance and I am presently being treated by the VA. Will I be required to get health insurance?<br/><br/>Life insurance for diabetics?<br/>My brother is a diabetic and in poor health. He is also in prison. Can I still get life insurance for him?<br/><br/>Do you need to pay for home insurance if you re only RENTING?<br/>This is for a project about future living plans, and I m not too sure if it s necessary to pay for monthly housing insurance if you re renting an apartment. <br/><br/>How common is rescission of insurance policies?<br/>How common is rescission of insurance policies? Sadly that is not the case. The last three quotes I got were from Farmers, State Farm and met. The quotes for 6 months were absurd. Farmers even quoted me at 8000+ for six months. Seriously? I do live in Detroit, so I am accustomed to higher rates but this is crazy. I have never made an insurance claim. I had one minor traffic ticket 3 years ago(no turn on red). I have had continuous coverage from my current provider for 4 years. What could the problem be. Is it possible to get the insurance companies I quoted with to give me information on why they quoted me at the rates they did. This has been incredibly disheartening. I guess I will stick with my current provider for about 1800 every 6 months. <br/><br/>Best car insurance company for me 10 points!!!!!!?<br/> what is the cheapest+best auto insurance for me?!!!?!!?!!?!?   we are a family of 4 and we all drive. we have a toyota 4x4, colorado, 1985 nissan truck, mustang v6.   my youngest son has had 1 accident   i m 46 my wife is 46 and my sons are 18,19     i cant find a good car insurance they are all expensive!!!!!!!!!! <br/><br/>How much is car insurance for a 97 corolla?<br/> please don t say ask your insurance company because i wont know until a couple days later.   i just got my license and im 17 years old and i have a 97 corolla.
