OKAY BIG POWER OF THE DOCTOR THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS

bats don't read this if u haven't watched it yet. under a readmore for spoilers and because it's long whoops.

overall i think the writers were trying to do too much yet again. i can forgive part of this since it's a batshit master plan, but dan's leaving felt so rushed because of all the other stuff they had to get in, and i was upset we didn't get more time with just yaz and thirteen, exploring the dynamic we were left with at the end of the previous episode

you know i'm bored of daleks and cybermen. you know this. vaguely interesting to have them working together but i feel like that's also been done before? could have done something more fun and different!

again structurally they're not doing anything with their ideas. timeless child doesn't really matter. nothing thirteen has done has had a lasting impact on the plot of doctor who. and i hope they never touch timeless child again! it's just that if chibnall was going to do that he should have followed through during his run.

sacha dhawan killed it as always. he's such a compelling and sexy master, i hope we haven't seen the last of him. also my link got copyright struck for the song (but not the whole pirated episode) which i'm assuming was the iconic hit rasputin by boney m. which is hilarious.

i did also enjoy the dynamic of ace and tegan, especially with yaz (though i don't see any real reason for them to bring back graham. but if you're going to, where's ryan.). i love the exploration of what the lives of the companions are like afterwards, and how they might feel resentment/loss/yearning. tegan clinging to her gift from the doctor and being used as a weapon is so interesting and i wish they'd done more with that. like, doctor, you fuck people up so reliably it can be used against you!

however who actually set this up? was it graham? if it was graham why were they arguing over directions, unless they were trying to find yaz from the doctor's directions? in which case when did she have time to send them? why wasn't ryan there?

as much as i love the idea that the doctor and thirteen especially is defined by her friendships, i wish she had gotten her own dying monologue without being interrupted by the support group. jodie deserved it, but i think it also lessens the impact. she's ALONE, let her be alone! i'd have also loved it to be sadder (more detail later). like i wasn't already sobbing but you know i love misery. this doctor was so desperate for companionship, and it also feels a little out of character for yaz to just do it without questioning, when she has been pushing back against the doctor's commands during these specials. i don't see any real reason yaz would leave just because the doctor's regenerating. feels blatantly done to get yaz out of the way.

also kind of devastated that the last time we see yaz she's lying about the doctor being fine and still not talking about her real feelings. at a support group designed for that exactly.

i did overall enjoy yaz's story in this ep, and mandip's performance. love that she had to do stuff on her own and smashed it, i think that's really been missing for thirteen's whole run because there's always been a million other companions around.

so THASMIN. i have a lot of feelings about this.

I haven't been got so bad by a ship in a loooong time. i caught up over the weekend and couldn't think about anything else. mandip how do you make your eyes do that.

when i said "haha wouldn't it be deliciously angsty if they never actually get to act on their feelings and we don't even get a kiss" I DIDN'T EXPECT THEM TO ACTUALLY DO THAT. I CAN'T BELIEVE I BAITED MYSELF.

as someone who rarely experiences romantic attraction i'm not against the doctor just. not feeling that for yaz even if she wanted to. but it really seemed in the sea devils conversation that she did, she was just scared to act on it. but then that seemed to disappear again in potd. i've heard that mandip was playing yaz so that it would make sense if the writers decided to make her in gay love with the doctor, but thirteen reciprocating kind of came out of nowhere for me. she's very heart on her sleeve and i don't think she'd have been able to hide it if she was feeling it previously. so this is a case of poor setup imo since they? didn't tell jodie?? it also feels like a copout honestly, like chibnall is saying "look! we did lesbians! we weren't baiting you!" while we don't actually get the substance of their relationship at all.

although i'm obsessed with the tragedy of them just agreeing to spend forever together, and that forever lasting like. a week. tasty.

anyway. i'm just saying, i'd have made the whole thing even more tragic. yaz refusing to leave without a reason. the doctor lying to get her out. her regretting it at the last second and wishing she had yaz there, that more than anything she doesn't want to be alone again. that good stuff >:)

agree with other people saying thirteen's characterisation is off. she has no more reason to be scared of the master's bullshit than usual. she literally just saved the entire universe mostly on her own. where's her comebacks, her eyerolls? it felt like jodie barely got to actually do anything in her own last episode.

forced regen is an interesting concept for me, i think it works in the end and it was pretty chilling, though i'd have liked to see more of a character change in the master-doctor. regen changes you! every time! some parts of the doctor would still be there!

doctor getting zapped and killed by an (checks hand) energy bolt feels a little contrived and disconnected from the main plot. feels like they wrote it, realised they still had to kill her, and went back and added the train and qurunx subplot.

speaking of that final regen, OKAY!

i was so hyped to see ncuti that i was actually mad david showed up lol. it does make sense for the anniversary though and i'm curious where they'll go with it.

final thought - hated the design choice to have her clothes change in the regen. YOUR CLOTHES DON'T CHANGE. IT'S A THING. if you wanted to hint at it being tennant you could have done face or hand close-ups instead. we were robbed of tennant in that fit also.

Why r u , finishing ep three i think now, first of all, i like it, in a weird way, i think if they'd cut or even just changed the whole fanfic about my brother and his friends thing this wouldn't have many other problems other than the stuff that mandee just likes to do. Its been a weird day for me so im not jumping up and down a lot but i wouldn't be watching it if I didn't really like a lot of the things they do, i get how this could be like a comfort show

The whole "lowkey bullying cause i like you" was hard to watch in cutie pie, if they do it with them here too, while tutorfighter are already somewhere on that spectrum , that mightbe too much for me, at least when they short of went there (with the 2nd cutie pie dudes) the others called it out, it just brought back cutie pie feelings, both good and bad ( i like seeing them though, i like that they're here and i really want them to have more screentime)

They're kind of touching on Fighter dealing with his internalised homophobia and i expect they'll do more of it , i think it would be interesting to see Tutor kind of ,you know its just.... Zon's panic phase is usually around Tutor, Saifai just laughs it off and doesn't take it seriously but Tutor doesn't, he tells him to calm down and i just think it would be interesting to see kind of how this whole atmosphere around queerness is affecting him , cause he seems a lot more comfortable than everyone else with it up to this point and there's the added layer of his friendship with Hwahwa while fighter flirts with him

Hwahwa and Day are adorable and i like her, the DRAMA of FighterHwahwaTutor WAS AMAZING, ESPECIALLY IN THAT SCENE WHEN SHE TELLS TUTOR THAT SHE AND FIGHTER HAVEN'T EVEN KISSED the three of them are decent actors and they're really making this whole thing work

(edit: Im enjoying the casual relationships , Tutor and Zon being friendly but not besties, the existence of various friend groups with varying degrees of familiarity, feels realistic and im loving it)

Im ignoring everything plot related for obvious reasons but im not skipping anything (football club-cute boy stuff)

Once again wondering if the cutie pie spinoff being a sequel, which means a whole season of the same problems they already kind of worked on, would be better or worse than a parallel story, literally the whole thing all over. Cutie Pie jumped between "i like it, i love them, miscommunication and all, if they make sad face ill start sobbing i just want them to be haaapppyyyy even though the drama is fun" and "i swear to god ill fucking kill them" a lot and im...short of seeing how this could go a little bit that way and mentally preparing for the spinoff.

- and idk . but sighhhh sigh sigh. the thing with ezri is i like understand absolutely and i would ALSO feel that way with him not wanting to talk to her rn. like is it stupid ass the way he treated her? yah..... and not right BUT i'd be, like, "fine" with it in the sense of like. it would align with his character and i recognise his own shit is getting in the way and people dont handle/react to things perfectly and like- he did lose his wife, and stuff, and its not like... she owes him her time either like.

- bc like. if HE is not comfortable being friends with (or even talking to) his late wifes successor i dont think thats, like, a weird "hes runniong away; he isnt communicating" situation moment bc like. frankly its kind of obvious... why someone might not want to do that at all. its a unique situation. and GRANTED, yes they do have to work togetrher but like... i think its fiar if he just wants to keep it sort of civil and i dont know . sometimes you can just settle for things being awkward with each other, like? you cant make every situation perfect all of the time- and itsliterally fine, just grit ur teeth... granted i guess thats a very Me way of thinking abt it but like- but-

first off, affectionate eye rolling, nose boop, and head bonk is the best thing.

second, IF SOMEONE SAYS THAT DURING WHEN CALLUM WAS HELPING RAYLA PUT ON HIS SCARF AND THEY J STARED AT EACHOTHER FOR A BIT BEFORE RAYLA TURNED AWAY THAT HE WAS N O T LOST IN HER EYES? they’re wrong. this is fact now.

third, their teamwork and decision making is excellent. they agree to try and sneak past sol regem, and when that fails try talking to him and then decide to simply trick his senses with the scarf. and instead of rayla shooting down callum’s “smelltriloquism” idea, she simply adds onto it! LOVE HEALTHY FRIENDSHIPS

third, THE ADORABURR FIELD! their smiles were so fond and soft and A. they make me cry of joy. 

an overall look on it, i like how this episode really shows their feelings clearly. no “will they won’t they”, at least for rayla. it’s clear she has feelings.

3. AH FUCK. ANGST.

first i love how when rayla mentions that she’s excited and happy but also terrified, callum tries to comfort her. good boi. best boi.

second, elf callum. i love that scene so much even if the second-hand embarrassment kills me, and rayla is j like “why the fuck do i love you. im gonna kill him.”

third, DANCE! callum not being rude and saying her home is “modest” before rayla explains it’s an illusion, his BLUSH WHEN SHE HELPS HIM, and the softness in general. rayla’s excitement that she’s home and talks abt that she can show callum where she went to school, the best moonberry surprise place, until...

fourth, AH FUCK. A N G S T T I M E. rayla being crest-fallen before callum says that it must’ve been a mistake, and she realizes that ethari would probably understand!

and then CONFIRMED GAYS. YES.

rayla realizing ethari ghosted her too and then callum GOING O F F. he angy and when rayla runs out callum IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWS (like in a later episode) and comforts her again.

when ethari comes down and breaks the spell and says to callum “trees to meet you too” and rayla’s like “don’t encourage him”

also callum trying to get on the shadowpaw and ethari being Concerned is AMAZING. concerned dad content

4. H E R E W E G O

first, rayla clearly being sad and callum picking up on that quickly (he even seems to be almost falling on purpose, perhaps to make her smile?) and asking if she’s ok before being shot down by rayla insisting she is fine. GOD DAMN. THAT HURTS.

second, their interaction with nyx is so amazing. rayla being protective of zym and callum being a DORK is awesome, but also their decision making.

after rayla reluctantly decides that they can go see how nyx could get them across the desert so quickly, they see the ambler and then their reasoning is amazing.

The idea of a clone Gar made by CADMUS because Mercy wanted to keep him is scary but I can see it, she's just Chief 2.0 and Bruce just casually telling Dick "also there's been this green tiger problem, I think CADMUS made it, it's been killing people. I don't know what CADMUS is planning with it but it's not good." and Dick just SCREAMS. I had a similar idea awhile back before s3 and saw Gar's sudden attitude change but instead of a clone, Rachel's dark magic (or Trigon i dunno, it was either one) like corrupted his soul while she was healing him and left some demonic power in him that'll keep corrupting until he's pretty much a demon himself, making his personality change and become more angry and aggressive with his teammates... which is beginning to fit s3 Gar and I just.... whoops.

As for the Arkham Asylum one, I actually have a fic planned for closer to Halloween about Gar getting Fear Toxined while at Arkham Asylum with Dick, but he's separated from him when it happens and I'm not going to spoil anything but it gets very intense and dark. I mean.. this is Fear Toxin we're dealing with here. And there will be peak rage/protective Dadwing content because we all love it.

If the show had Gar die instead of Hank.. *INHALE* I wouldn't have been able to watch, I would have been sobbing too hard. bUT that doesn't mean I haven't thought about Red Hood taking Gar instead of Hank because I have. (if there's any possible way I can twist the story to be about Gar and Dick I will.) If that episode was about Gar, I would go with something like a serious life endangering injury instead of a bomb because it would have been a way to introduce Gar's ability to bring himself back to life (which was shown in 2x01) to his teammates. Maybe Jason would implant Gar with some device that makes him bleed out slowly internally but when his heartbeats faster he bleeds faster and that bed conversation scene with Hank and Gar? yup, that'd be Dick coming in to lay next to Gar and talk to him. I also imagine Nightwing would be in Dove's place as the one who accidentally sets off the detonator while Kory would be in Nightwing's as the one who tried to get Nightwing to not listen to Red Hood but Dick is Dick and his love and strong urge to protect his children some times makes him make bad decisions. Gar would die before Conner gets there to save him and like canon that's how the episode would end but in e4 the Titans would learn Gar's powers bring him back to life and he's way too chill about it like "damn i died again??? oh well I want a sandwich dying makes me hungry." I love this rewrite idea so much already now I wanna write it @wonderbatwayne @not-so-mundane-after-all-97 yall think I should?? 🤔 or would it be too sad for anyone to read 😅

my opinions on morgwen:

I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I SHIP IT WITH MY WHOLE ASS SOUL. dude, their potential as a ship is incredible😭i fucking love them together. i wrote them as a side pairing in my first multi-chapter merthur fic and i adored writing their interactions and dynamic sm. if morgana was going to be with anyone, my first choice will always be gwen. i also read them as a pairing in fics all the time because the pure power-couple potential is insane.

hot ☕️ here™️: i think if someone was to bring morgana back from the brink of hatred, it should have been gwen (not merlin). so, like, i could definitely see merlin telling her about his magic and whatnot and maybe that would have stopped her from going dark side...but...i didn’t think merlin should have (ekk probably an unpopular opinion).

see, i love merlin with my entire heart..and tbh telling uther fucking pendragon’s ward that he had magic was just too much of a gamble—especially with arthur’s life on the line, which literally became merlin’s sole purpose in life (another matter for a different essay™️). i understand his need to keep it a secret from her even more when the large reptile repeatedly got into merlin’s head that she was bad news from the jump (also another matter for a different essay™️).

SO. that leaves two options for our miserable magical gal: arthur or gwen. now, i honestly believe arthur wouldn’t have hurt her if he was told. and i even think he may have became more sympathetic to the magical community because of it—especially when he saved mordred wayyyy early on that cemented the fact that arthur was not uther. but i can also understand why morgana wouldn’t tell arthur, and it’s pretty much the same reason merlin didn’t tell her about his magic: the risk was too big and she didn’t want to gamble her life with an unknown reaction.

now we get to the main point: gwen would have been the best option for her. whether it is platonic or not, gwen was always there for morgana. gwen is such a kind, loving soul, and she deeply respected and adored morgana—you can tell by the way she smiled around her in the beginning seasons, how she would get her flowers, how she would worry about morgana’s wellbeing. even though gwen was morgana’s servant, she cared for her in more ways than were required and it showed. they were best friends. the entire incident with gwen’s father, which was horrendous, might be the reason gwen would be rightfully upset about the subject of magic; however. she knew her father wasn’t magical, she knew uther was a tyrant, and she knew morgana’s heart. someone is gonna tell me that if morgana had explained to gwen what happened, how her magic was innate, how morgana would never fucking choose to have magic anywhere near her shithead guardian (who probably would have killed her imo if he knew bc you know the whole “fire will purify” bullshit), that gwen would hate her??? I MEAN LITERALLY WATCH THE LAST EPISODES AGAIN. when QUEEN GWEN realizes that the whole time it was merlin saving everyone’s asses, and she connected all the dots, her face showed nothing but pure understanding and acceptance.

gwen was such an underused character. her fucking potential arcs could have been phenomenal (again, LOL, another matter for a different essay™️), and the way canon made morgana use gwen was fucking gross and im not a fan🙃 but fuck canon. i ship them and i love them to pieces ✌🏻thank you for coming to my talk✌🏻

oh boy, where do i start? i would die for her...is that too extreme for the starting place? i fucking LOVE manon blackbeak dude. oh my god, so, remember when her and aelin fought for the first time in QoS? i remember jumping up from my lounging position with my hand over my smiling mouth because i love both of these badass hardcore women with everything i am. i mean, aelin owns my ass (she is probably my favorite character of all time rn) but manon hits differently. her storyline at the beginning was so bleh, but, man, did it escalate fast to “holy shit” to “i fucking love her” to “oh fuck im sobbing.”

I know i’ve said this a dozen times...but Walker just keeps getting better and better and better! With every. single. episode. I loved everything about this episode so much and again! Jared live-tweeting it was the best!!! I watched this episode at 3 am lats night again help.

I really enjoyed the case they worked here as well. It was both deep and emotional and that twist! YEPPPP SIGN ME UP.

THE BAR SCENE WITH WALKER AND MICKI. AGAIN THEIR FRIENDSHIP! The episode title fit so well here and I’m glad Micki and Walker have really reached a good understanding on a friend and partner level. THEY\RE THE CUTEST PLEASE I LOVE THEM.

-I love how this show is really taking the time to address the difficulties someone like Micki- A Female Latina would go through- the sexism, blatant disrespect and disregard. Micki’s character is also something that’s very well written and acted(Lindsey ily) and portrayed extremely well. One of my favorite things about Walker is how he really trusts Micki, views her as an equal, and wants to earn her trust, not demand it. It’s perfect(cordirez breakdown time). Micki is also slowly letting her fences down around him and it’s a huge and very delightful to see step. I love and adore their friendship and chemistry so much.

Anyways! As you can see the entire episode was so enjoyable and I loved it. The best part of this was definitely the Cordirez friendship development and i cannot wait to see where it goes from here!

Speculation/Thoughts for Episode 5:- So it’s for sure that Walker is going back undercover as Duke who’s a baseball...person? Idk he was wearing a baseball hat so :) Walker’s past is now very much mixed in with his present and I AM SCARED. What he’s doing is yet to be revealed but Tywla is coming back and that will just. mess. things. up. The scene in which Walker is yelling at August GOD SO NOT READY FOR THAT. It feels like him and his kids might go back to how they were before. I really don’t want that to happen. Also why am I expecting a major cliffhanger.

Pilot will always have a special place in my heart. Fugue is just Very Good and one that I’ll often turn to if I want to watch an episode. Nocturne – idk why this one’s on the list but I just really like it? I can’t really pinpoint any particular reason but I really vibe with the aesthetic. Canticle is great for so many reasons it has a good aesthetic and I love nick wilding. Deguello is just so satisfying??? As a conclusion not only to the whole of series 6 but series 5 as well, it really gets me – all of them coming together at the end after drifting apart in various directions all series? THAT’S exactly what I want TV to make me feel.

And also, Icarus needs a shoutout for being the only piece of TV that’s ever made me properly cry. Like I was sobbing for at LEAST half an hour props to Russell Lewis for making me feel An Emotion. & Neverland because I love it but I can’t rewatch it bc it’s too stressful

EDIT: idk why i immediately discounted neverland & icarus from the list for being to sad? like yeah i’d die if i rewatched it but neverland is great and the peter jakes character development is Important

Seasons in Order of Preference (or tops)

S3, S1, S4, S6, S5, S2, S7. This was so hard to do bc I like all of them? Like I don’t hate S2 AT ALL, but I just couldn’t put it in front of S5&6 because they have such good underlying plot. S3 and S1 have the most episodes that I gravitate to, and S4 idk it has great vibes although Harvest is a really unsatisfying ending. And I don’t specifically dislike S7, but the individual episodes are too intertwined to enjoy them individually which is something I prefer in a series. Also, it’s way too stressful.

Favourite Scene(s)

100% the end of Deguello as I said above. And Arcadia with Morse and Jakes in the mineshaft. Also in S6 when Box is being a dick to Joan and then Thursday comes up and introduces her as his daughter and Box shits bricks -- POETIC CINEMA.

EDIT: also i’ve just remembered when box is parked on a double yellow and trewlove says they’re going to stand out like a couple of spare pricks and george just smILES AT HER hhhhh

I have to say for bisexual reasons: the kiss scene at the end of Raga is just *chef’s kiss* and also Morse and Nick in Canticle in the enchanted place or whatever it was called and the almost-kiss in the pilot with Rosalind calloway.

Favourite Musical Piece or Moment

I have to say Jennifer Sometimes because it genuinely SLAPS. Like I have it on my Spotify for actual non-endeavour-related reasons, it’s just such a tune.

Also, the theme tune. It makes me FEEL THINGS. And I associate it with all the emotions I feel at the end of an episode because obvs it comes in at the end, so I feel like everything I feel about the show as a whole is tied up in that music???

Favourite Cinematography/Imagery (season, ep, whatever)

Anything that’s sunny and summery – immediately what comes to mind is Canticle, Arcadia and Harvest. I’m probably slightly misremembering them but in my head they’re just warm and golden and lens flares and sunshine the vibes are just immaculate.

Favourite Ensemble Character that isn't Morse

You mean I have to CHOOSE?? I have to say Peter Jakes but that’s mainly because I write him so often I think. Like I absolutely ADORE him but mainly the version of him in fanfics. If I took jakes out of the equation, I’d pick either Frazil or Bright? Bright just has such good vibes and especially in s6&7 and Frazil is an ICON.

Favourite One-episode Character

Automatically I want to say nick wilding but that’s 95% just because he’s really fucking fit. I quite like the vicar in Girl and also Anthony Donn (but only because I love Sam Barnett)

Favourite Morse Look (season, ep, whatever)

S3 is my favourite hair because it’s messier. In terms of a whole look either his red jumper in Ride or any of the casual decorating outfits he wears in S7. And the uniform in S6.

Biggest Disappointment

This is a common opinion but all the women are treated like shit and I don’t vibe with it. I was starting to plan a fic recently and I made a list of characters who don’t get a super big role in the show who I wanted to specifically use more because I love them and then I realised literally all of them are women? Yikes. Joan is treated like shit, Monica is treated like shit, Frazil is an icon but 90% of her interactions are just to further Morse’s development, Violetta again is only there for the sake of Morse, and Trewlove is side-lined so much too (I read in an interview somewhere that Dakota blue Richards actually had to press at some points to get Trewlove a more valuable role in the plot so I don’t even want to know how invisible they made her in the original script).

Also, it could be gayer. Like that’s just bc I’m gay, but I just want some rep that’s more than 2 or 3 off-screen gays/lesbians. I get it’s the 60s, but other shows manage it it’s not that hard to make one (1) rounded LGBT character in a loving relationship.

Provide some Spicy Takes (on canon, fandom, anything)

This is not spicy at ALL, but I love how shippable literally any character is. Morse and someone he met briefly in one episode? Yep. Two people who would completely hate each other in the canon? Go for it. Two characters who’ve never met? Sure why not? Morse has absolutely slept with all of his friends.

Basically I watched this to shit myself and ended up heartbroken, more so than the first season, even. Once i started piecing things together it became less scary and more so just sad in the best way possible. I know some people hated this season but this is lowkey my favorite season so far and possibly one of my favorite stories told, ever.
