Much was said about the parallels of 1.20 with 2.20, but let's better talk about how Kate shows anger and we know it is because Lucy got hurt and not for any other reason, the case worries her, yes, but Lucy her priority, it is Lucy who could have gotten badly hurt or worse, in 1.20 Lucy yells at Kate and masks it with her jeopardizing the case, when we all knew that her annoyance was because Kate could have died in that situation.

And let's talk about "not mad, just frustrated" because it's clear she's angry and feels like yelling at her, but we also know her concern for Lucy's safety is more

"I don't care about the anniversary thing."

I'd like to know if Lucy really thought that's what Kate was worried about or was just trying to deflect attention from what just happened 🤔. Because even to Jane, who was probably watching them from her office, it's obvious that what Kate is worried about is that Lucy was acting trusting Joe fully aware that things could go wrong

The fact that she defends her point in front of Kate so decisively, the way she knows Joe was manipulated and doesn't back down even when it seems like she should, that speaks to how Lucy knows what she is doing is the right thing to do. By meeting Joe she realized that her suspicions of him being the victim were real, he was manipulated and her instincts were screaming at her to get justice for him.

"I'm scared that he might do something that he can't come back from."

And she says that because she's sure he's not guilty, that what he did was to protect himself, oh I'm loving watching Lucy become the agent she's becoming 🤗

And suddenly it seems that neither of them are upset, or frustrated or have anything else to say, I love the way Jane was probably waiting for the right moment to come in, I imagine her quietly waiting for either of them to raise their voices a little more to interrupt and stop an argument

One detail I can't get past is the way Lucy turns to look at Kate before leaving the room, she knows Kate doesn't want her to go, she knows she distrusts Joe and is upset and worried about her, but she also knows she needs to do the right thing by protecting Joe and saving him from being blamed or doing something he won't be able to come back from, and Kate's expression is...gold

"Take Whistler with you."

Because she has nothing to do with the case, but Jane simply doesn't want her in the office anymore 👀😂.

I KNOW there was an argument in the parking lot when getting in the car over who was going to drive, because Kate didn't want to let Lucy do it, but Lucy just had to do things her way, regardless, we love seeing them out in the field together 🤭

I can't be the only one who yelled at the screen when Lucy made sure Kate didn't see her before she entered the boat, because she knew she shouldn't do it by herself but she also knew she had to do it alone

"I turn my head for a minute!"

And that was exactly the reason why she shouldn't go in alone, because it was sure there would be danger, it was more than obvious that something like that would happen, and I want to think that Lucy knew Kate would be there in time, but something in the " thanks" she says, tells me that she was actually surprised and grateful that Kate had been quick enough

I'm repeating myself too much, but I just can't express how much I loved watching her handle the case and deal with Joe the way she did, she was respectful and honest with him, everything she did was to prove that he had been manipulated and that he was the victim of the situation simply because she knew he was, she knew that defending him was the right thing to do, it speaks to her as a person, her heart and her as an agent and her instinct that we have watched grow throughout these two seasons, I'm so proud of my little Lucy 💖

"You doing all right?"

Notice the way Kate looks at Lucy when she asks if she's okay, she knows that what Lucy is trying to do is deflect attention, but she knows her too well

"Maybe you even saved his life, I'm proud of you."

I'm going to take this two ways, because I want you to notice the way Lucy shakes her head when Kate tells her she's proud. First Kate says this in a way of agreeing with her and apologizing for not trusting Lucy's instinct, for reprimanding her for what she did that even though it was wrong, Lucy did it because she knew it had to be done and second, because she knows that Lucy needs someone to tell her, she needs someone to reassure her that she did everything she could, the comment she makes asking why she feels so bad if it was the right thing to do, she needs to know, for others to know, even reassure herself, that she did everything in her power to save the innocent person's life.

And how she finally breathes and lets herself be comforted, we know it's hard for Lucy to accept when something hurts her, luckily Kate knows her well enough to not need words, just hugging her, letting her know it's okay, that she's going to be okay.

Lucy (amicably) punching SAC Curtis's arm was such a wonderful detail in that moment.

Because throughout the scene she'd been the supporter, the rock. She was there for Kate, trying to be the calm, down to earth, reassuring one, so Kate wouldn't freak out even more.

And the punch shows that Lucy was just as nervous. She had just been holding it in until that moment for Kate's sake. And it was only when she realized everything would be okay that she finally let her own nerves show.

I think the serenade is so viscerally uncomfortable because it’s supposed to be. Choices by the cast and crew force you to sit in the intense vulnerability of the moment with the characters and confront it with them, one of the most overwhelmingly uncomfortable experiences in the world.

Many have pointed out that, on paper, the situation is objectively not that bad. Whistler can sing, it’s a fairly private location, there are max fifteen people who all know each other reasonably well and have some level of context for the situation, and no one except Lucy and Ernie are even aware anything is happening until halfway through. Sure, it’s unexpected and there’s a question of situational appropriateness, but Whistler’s misguided earnestness is endearing and her occasional inability to read a room is part of her charm.

But it's well established that Kate “my pantsuits are my armor” Whistler and Lucy “if you saw me crying, no you didn’t” Tara are extremely unwilling to be vulnerable in front of other people. They’ve made a lot of progress individually and particularly with each other – it’s probably the most significant character development across the season – but Officer “It’s only a flesh wound” and Special Agent “My heart would like to change the subject” still have a long way to go. This is still really hard for them.

Leading up to this scene, the writers go to great lengths to establish what is at stake. The question here is not, “does she love me?” Lucy and Kate both know the answer to that. Jane knows the answer to that. So do Ernie, Jesse, Kai, and probably the night security guard, the janitorial staff, and that one random extra who sits at the fourth desk in the bullpen. The question is, “is love a good enough reason to try again and risk getting hurt?” On some level, the audience, Ernie, and Lucy all know the answer to that too. It feels like an inevitability and Kate is really the only one who isn't aware of that.

This is where the acting and cinematography transform a foregone conclusion into a nausea inducing trip into Kate’s headspace. For the sake of comparison, consider the scene where Patrick serenades David in Schitt’s Creek. There are contextual differences in terms of situational appropriateness and relationship status, but otherwise the scenes are surprisingly similar. Look at the difference in presentation though:

Patrick is tucked in the corner of a low-ceilinged, well-lit room with his back to a wall. It’s a tight shot from a low angle to force a perspective that makes him appear larger than life. Noah Reid is relaxed and confident, and he has accompaniment. The guitar is in this with him, filling the silence and offering support. Even though David is vocally apprehensive, and his expression is inscrutable at best to start, everything about it feels safe.

Whistler, by contrast, is totally alone and completely exposed in the vast darkness. Tori has us trained by this point to understand this body language – the wringing hands, the unconscious attempts to make herself smaller, protect her center – means Kate is distraught. The shot is wide and angled down, which, coupled with height of palm trees and torches in the background, makes her look so small and fragile. And she’s completely unaccompanied, a solitary voice singing into the void. The whole situation feels extremely raw and incredibly vulnerable.

But that’s the situation, and we’re right there with her. There are only two options here and both are equally terrifying. One: Lucy says no, again, and leaves her exposed, alone in the dark with her broken heart in her hands. Two: Lucy agrees to try again. But the relationship they’re coming back to is not the one they left – they’ve said too many things they can’t take back. Things like, “you are responsible for safeguarding my heart and happiness because I love you” and, “concern for your wellbeing profoundly affects my executive function and, on some level, the value I place on my own life.” Things like, “your existence caused me to fundamentally reprioritize my life and turn my back on a decade of dreams without a second thought,” and, “I will keep showing up for you, over and over, without being asked and in ways you didn’t know you needed, because I love you even if I don’t have the words to say it and even if you don’t love me back.” You can’t go back to a fun, flirty, “whatever this is” after saying things like that. In their absence, the relationship has evolved into something different and much more serious.  

There’s a moment in all life-changing relationships, as they transition from something casual to something real, where you finally admit to yourself what you really want and what you’re willing to risk to get there. The most gut-wrenchingly terrifying thing to do is to then admit that to the other person, to ask for what you want. You have to expose yourself completely, admit how much you care, place your heart in their hands and hope they don’t let go. That’s where we are with Whistler in this scene. That’s the discomfort and uncertainty we’re being forced to sit in, and they honestly did an amazing job of bottling the “I need to throw my phone into a ravine and then back it over with a truck because I just admitted something that absolutely terrifies me and I don’t have the emotional bandwidth to handle the aftermath right now” feeling. Just took me a few days to really appreciate it.

In light of the "Lucy looks for a new apartment" line in the 2x05 press release synopsis, it’s been fun going back and seeing all the tidbits the show’s dropped about how Kacy is learning and reacting to each other’s living habits. Seeing as it’s Lucy who’s probably going to be moving in with her, I’m guessing it’s intentional that they’ve been highlighting Kate’s reactions. Even though Lucy’s the one over all the time, she hardly ever says anything about Kate’s apartment. 

2x01: Kate being surprised that Lucy’s cooked her a whole breakfast buffet with plates conquering every single flat surface of the apartment, Lucy seems to respond to a lot of things with, “you know that I’m from Texas,” Kacy honeymoon phase in Ernie’s lair, Kate makes her bed everyday immediately after waking up (implied that Lucy does not), Lucy would eat pizza everyday if she could (Kate sounds both disbelieving and fond of it all the same)

2x02: their coffee spot seems to be right outside of Kate’s apartment so 👀

2x03: Lucy thinks Kate’s good at decorating, Kate in wide-eyed shock that Lucy would even bring up the state of her apartment in front of people even as a joke and pounces on the chance to pile on, Kate likes organizing, her mom used to say “clutter is just delayed decision-making”

2x04: Lucy wore one shoe out to her car from Kate’s apartment, only keeps single extra shoes in her car instead of whole pairs, thinks it’s silly that Kate would even ask her how she knows which shoe she’s going to lose, Kate becoming increasingly more flabbergasted the whole time

Interesting that they’re introducing this ‘potentially moving in’ storyline so soon after they’ve started dating for real and started learning more about each other. And it’s been amusing seeing Kate and her progressively more confused expressions every time we learn more about Lucy. But above all, it’s been great to see how super smitten and in love with each other they’ve been ever since they got back together and you can see it even in the smaller moments. Like Whistler walking in holding Lucy’s shoe and openly talking about her leaving it behind at her apartment vs. S1 Whistler being all coy about them seeing each other to the point of hiding Lucy’s tennis bracelet in some security forms (and Ernie going up to Kate and asking about their “glass slipper situation” vs. Ernie being slightly more lowkey asking Lucy about them in s1)

So, keep making those goofy expressions Kate Whistler, because no matter how perplexed you might be by the way she lives, Lucy Tara is going to be looking for a new apartment and you're still going to ask her to move in with you despite it all.

You know, after reading your interpretation and knowing more about cbs, I understand why they kisses are always more sweet than the scene’s can ask for. In the beginning I wondered if it was some actress stipulation. Would love to see some open mouth kisses or tongue exploration, but now I get it, I see it’s out of the table.

it was a glum day today; dewy rain drops and mushy leaves scattered around your neighbourhood. and, to make it even worse, you had an appointment today, a chiropractic consultation with a doctor whom you did not know.

but it was okay, right? it was just a crack of the bones, to make your aching body feel better. 10 23 am

you arrive at the clinic, turning your windshield wipers off and parking your car. the clinic has a mahogany wood outside, and it was easy on the eyes. you realize you are being soaked in rain, and run inside the small building. a gust of lavender and vanilla enters your nostrils, its aromatic smell pleasing all your senses. you walk up to the receptionist. “hello, I’m here for an appointment with erm..” you don’t know his name. “doctor hart? I’ve got your file right here. ms. y/n l/n? he’s the only chiropractor here today, no one works on sundays.” the receptionist smiles, she was a pregnant, red head woman with a rather thin physique, her name plate read ‘kacie barlowe, receptionist’.

“that.. would be me. thank you.” you say, and take a seat in a waiting chair. “he will be with you briefly.” she mutters, clicking away on her keyboard, eyes glued on her computer screen.

the clinic had a birch wood finish, and plenty of plants in the waiting area, which was pleasant. you twiddle with your thumbs, glancing at the receptionist who took a sip of her drink occasionally.

“y/n l/n?” the chiropractor says in a deep, yet calm voice, his body half in the doorway and half in the corridor. you look down, and grab your things as you follow dr. hart into the office. “right this way,” he says. you make it there in a quick 30 seconds, and he closes the door right behind you.

“well hello there,” he says, grabbing a clipboard and gathering his tools. “If you may not already know, I’m Doctor Hart. I’ll be fixing you up today! So, before we get started I’m going to need a little information. Any sore spots? Previous surgeries?” He asks, looking up at you. His voice is soothing, like honey to your ears. And boy, is he cute. His green eyes stares into your e/c ones, his gaze lingering for a little too long. “um, my back has really been bothering me, so has my neck. as for surgeries, none.” You reply. You answer any other questions that he asks you, and he gets you to lay on the bed.

“Alright then, let’s get started, shall we?” He grabs an adjuster, and places it on your shoulder. It makes a slight ‘crack’ sound, and you feel like your shoulder has been put back in a place you didn’t know existed. You grunt softly, but stay still nonetheless. he does this again with your back, and your neck before he uses his hands to relax your muscles. “Let’s get your trigger points active,” he says, and he starts moving his hands all over your back, neck and even your legs. it feels like a new experience, a piece of heaven.

After a half an hour, the treatment is done. He places some sort of a lotion and spreads it out on your neck. It smells, again, like lavender. What is up with this place and lavender? you think.

“and..you’re done.” Dr hart says, grinning softly. he helps you off of the bed. “my body feels like jelly..” you mutter under your breath, struggling to keep your balance. “that’s alright, it’s normal. if you’d like.. you could just stay here for a bit. I need to grab the print out of your body analysis, anyways.” he says, before leaving the room. “oh- okay?” You say, sitting in a chair next to his desk. he was an organized individual, despite all of the neon yellow post-it notes that practically covered his bulletin board. at his desk, is a picture frame of him that looks like he’s at his graduation, holding his doctorate. In another frame, there is a woman he has his arm wrapped around. She’s blonde, like him, with a pink polo and brown eyes. she was outstandingly pretty. well, to be fair, he was a fairly good looking guy himself, so no surprise there. perhaps it’s his wife?

just then, dr hart walks in with the report. He cocks a blonde eyebrow, but hands it to you anyways in a disturbed manner. did he catch you checking out his pictures? you grab your bag. “uh, thank you, dr hart. have a great rest of your day—“ you say. “Sorry, I think you’ve forgotten something.” He says. It’s a hat, but it’s not yours. He grabs your wrist and injects a vein with a syringe filled with a yellow hued liquid inside. You start to feel drowsy. “doctor..?” You mumble, before blacking out completely. All you can hear now is dr hart’s shuffling as he stares into your soul, your heart beating in your chest.

What first drew you to this character?

Daniel: I just really like what a great stand-in for the reader he can be because yeah, I'm sure EVERYONE who read these books at some point had the same thought- that they would want to be turned and they'd see immortality as a gift. I like his shameless love of these monsters, the line about liking kissing and snuggling with dead things? Made me absolutely insane. I like that he's not afraid to mouth off to something so dangerous while he's still mortal. I like his drinking issues, his weird craft fixations. Basically everything we got in the text was incredible imo, he's a fave!!

Armand: Honestly Armand didn't really click with me until QotD. In my mind he was a Louis-simp in interview, and then an angry bitchy little Jesus freak in tvl, but then he shows up in QotD and he's putting cigarettes down the garbage disposal and throwing money at Daniel to make him teach him about international calls and I was like- damn, this one is a FREAK deep down. So seeing him be erratic and out of place and curious about the world made me view him in a new light, and the moments of gentleness he shows later in the book really pulled the pieces together for me.

If you could write effortlessly and as much as you wanted, what story (s) would you write for this character?

Fuck, I really want some newly turned Daniel at Night Island for both of them. Like what went wrong? What kind of maker was Armand with all these ghosts from his past around? How long did it take for things to fall apart and what were the ups and downs of that period like? I really, really wanna work through that but I don't have even the slightest inkling of where I want to begin yet.

So generally I start with fic rated Explicit or Mature, not just for pervert reasons lmao But I feel like if a writer can write some smut that really gets the characters and explores something interesting about them then most likely their fics with lower ratings are gonna be interesting and not pure woobification. (also if they're writing the kind of smut I like? Then we're likely similar flavors of freak and I know anything else they do is gonna be safe)

Also while I wanna write some vampire on vampire stuff, I generally prefer Daniel to be mortal for bodily exploitation purposes 😂

Does this character inspire you with little things in your daily life?

Kacy pls you know what things have been like for me lately, every two weeks something is going on that has me feeling like I'm living the Full Molloy lmao I'll never live down the experience of sitting in my car at 10pm and having that liquor store owner come outside and wave to me while Lixx runs around inside with an armful of bottles of wine for my shot nerves.

Anyways in all seriousness I think about Daniel's speech to Armand when he's dying a lot:

“But don’t you see,” Daniel said, “all human decisions are made like this. Do you think the mother knows what will happen to the child in her womb? Dear God, we are lost, I tell you. What does it matter if you give it to me and it’s wrong! There is no wrong! There is only desperation, and I would have it! I want to live forever with you.”

The refusal to ruminate or get sucked into thinking of all the possible wrong outcomes, that at the end of the day there is no wrong decision there's only action- I think there's something poignant there and I would do better to not be like Armand, convinced everything will turn out poorly in the end.

A headcanon I have about him is that after going in the sun at the end of Memnoch he's just been chilling having a Big Vampire Dirt Nap to sleep it all off; he woke up, saw that Vampire Court shit with Marius and Mini-Marius in charge, and went back to sleep. I suppose that counts as a quote but I also want to share one of the many moments in QotD that makes me absolutely fucking feral every time:

The getting so horny for Jesse he accidentally explodes a vase with is mind is a close second place, but I just love this entire exchange. Maharet yeets him off the terrace to stop him drinking Jesse's blood, then he just gets up and BLOWS HER A FUCKING KISS!!! I'm throwing a fucking fit

I keep making jokes that Luke and Qui-Gon are soulmates but then I started actually thinking about it now I’m starting to honestly believe it and I think it’s becoming a problem-

Like! Luke and Qui-Gon are both the hardest men to catch! Context clues tell us that Qui-Gon gets himself into a lot of trouble (Dooku saying he’s worried because he won’t be there to protect him) but Qui-Gon is never all that concerned, and I honestly think it’s because he pulls a Luke everytime and just stumbles his way out of trouble.

Qui-Gon, as I know and love him, is not an expert strategist, not really. He can come up with plans, but they’re pretty similar to Luke’s plans, ie, they have a beginning and an end but the middle consists of winging it. Luke is so much the opposite of a strategist that I firmly believe that the plan in Return of the Jedi was not solely created by him (only the dramatic flair was added by him. You know, the mischief-making and chaos-causing and bad guy baiting. I like to think Lando made him repeat the plan multiple times so that Luke wouldn’t go off script midway through because Luke Skywalker is totally the type of person to go off script midway through).

And! Qui-Gon Jinn with the Jedi Council and Luke Skywalker with the New Republic’s Senate. The only person who Luke ever listens to is Leia. We never even see him talk to another commanding officer! Does he even know who Mon Mothma is??? And, I just have to say it, in the Thrawn Trilogy, he straight up breaks Mara Jade, the former Hand of the Emperor and a woman who has threatened to kill him every time he so much as breathes, out of the house arrest that the New Republic placed her under. He breaks her out and he feels no shame whatsoever. The New Republic shows up to arrest him and Han and Han is the only one who seems concerned because Luke does not give a shit.

Luke doesn’t care about the New Republic! He cares about Leia and he cares about the people in the galaxy, but he doesn’t care about politics even slightly! He believes in hearing out both sides and judging things fairly, he is weird! Luke is a civilian! And they “let” him get away with so much, becausw they don’t actually have a choice! Nobody can control this madman! He decides “I’m leaving on a journey, you don’t need to know where to or for how long, bye!” and then he leaves!

Qui-Gon is much the same! In the Phantom Menace, yes, but also in the Cloak of Deception (“another novel, Kacie? They aren’t canon-“ shut up, canon is whatever I decide is canon because this is my character analysis and if the old authors got to portray characters wrong, so do I). Qui-Gon hears orders from the Order and he is only willing to listen to them if they coincide with what he believes he has to do. Which is completely what Luke does!

Both of these men are Jedi with green lightsabers. They are both rule-abiding citizens approximately eight percent of the time or whenever it’s convenient. They decide to leave and then do so without letting anybody know. They are both seen by other Jedi as reckless and impulsive, when we as the audience know that what they’re actually doing is following the will of the Force. They are the most obnoxious Jedi to spend time with because they toe the line between taking dangerous situations seriously and making little tonally inappropriate quips to the enemy. They both make the executive decision that the best way to get their point across to someone attacking them is to be as annoying as possible.

But, most importantly, they both make Anakin want to be a Jedi! They both inspire him, they both do things that Anakin sees and thinks “So that’s what a real Jedi is.” On opposite ends of Anakin’s life, Qui-Gon and Luke both have the same effect on him of making him want to be a better person! Without Qui-Gon, Anakin turned to the Dark Side, and without Luke, Anakin would never have rejoined the light. They play a similar role, symbolically.

And they both have that connection to Obi-Wan, where Anakin seems to assume Qui-Gon and Luke have both spent tons of time with Obi-Wan. (Seriously, Anakin definitely thinks Obi-Wan has been raising Luke to be a Jedi since childhood, there’s no other explanation for when he says “You’ve made a lightsaber? Great, congrats, you’re a Jeid Master now.” Unless lightsaber-crafting is WAY harder than I thought…)

Moving away from Anakin though, the two of them also have a similar relationship to Yoda. Yoda is extremely exasperated by Qui-Gon, and you can feel the exasperation whenever Yoda has to deal with Luke, too. But, he also is horribly, terribly, terrifically fond of both Qui-Gon and Luke. Yoda considers them his friends, and he considers himself both of their teacher because he is trying not to think about Dooku, okay, let him ignore the elephant in the room for a moment. He cannot stand the way either of these men refuse to use common sense, logic, or the brains they were given, but he also really enjoys spending time with them and misses them both when they leave.

Qui-Gon Jinn and Luke Skywalker are either reincarnation, soulmates, or the Force is just having a great time fucking with the Republic(s). Any way you spin it, I like that they are so strangely similar :D

Okay, I love Chase, I love that she doesn't let herself be intimidated and is herself at all times no matter what, she is firm to who she is and what she believes in, so I know in my heart that she knew it was Kate who was with Lucy, not only because Kate is probably not there very often and it's a new vibe in her space, but because of the pure and warm energy that Kate has

Because Lucy asks if she felt her strength or stern authority, and Chase's answer is that she actually felt sincerity, and if Chase is as good as I know she is, it speaks to how Kate always acts following her heart, doing what she knows is the right thing 🥺

Lucy is one of the most genuine characters I know, she is distracted, when she concentrates she can't talk/listen to another subject, she has phobias, she is stubborn and afraid to show her feelings but at the same time she has the heart of a child and is very sentimental, so seeing this kind of scenes where she is real, not wanting to see her friend get a wound stitched up, showing displeasure in her own way, makes me very happy, especially the way Kate reacts to this, she is just so happy to see how silly her girlfriend is

And the best scene in the whole series finally came, I find it very funny how Kate was so sure she had let that go and as soon as Lucy mentions it she immediately panics.

Kate's face of disappointment and surprise when Kai said "CPA" with full confidence in his response 😅

This one just because I love watching them mess around with each other, and Kate and Lucy standing next to each other is always cute ❤

How cute she looks so nervous to say it in front of everyone and goes over to tell Lucy first, as if to make sure it wasn't anything ridiculous and that she was going to be able to say it in front of the others, plus Lucy's totally excited response wanting her to already tell them 🥺🥰

"Miss America!"

Everyone's reaction and Jane saying Kate would have made a great Miss America just so Kate could feel more comfortable after noticing her nervous, and the way she can joke once Jane makes the comment, they are a family and every time they are welcoming her in a better way and making her feel part of them, I love them 💗

And of course you didn't think I was going to leave out the best thing about the episode, knowing that they are there for each other, knowing that they can joke and play with each other, it's really what's worth it, it's not just a job, it's family ✨

I'm so happy we finally had new episodes and got to see all our Ohana together, I missed Lucy so much and seeing her with the boys and Kate, I don't know what I'll do when the season ends :(

I’ve come to the conclusion that one of Lucy’s favorite things to do is make Kate laugh. She revels in the sound of her laugh and loves to watch a smile break out on her face, knowing she’s the one who put it there. ❤️

Oh she does, she does, she so does! Lucy loves making Kate smile and laugh, and her own smile when she does that? It's so beautiful it hurts. I was actually going to make a gifset about that later but what the hell – here comes the final, low res version lol, because LOOK AT HER

Ho’oponopono, or "I’m cautiously anticipating queer joy in 'Ohana' because the gays have been fighting for ten episodes and Jane is throwing a party."

Important preface: Everything here is based on this 1985 paper by Karen L Ito at UCLA. It’s a truly fascinating read that I’m going to criminally oversimplify to avoid putting anyone to sleep. The parallels I’m about to lay out run much deeper than I have the space to get in to but the full dissertation is available upon request 😉

Now I may be way out of pocket here, but the back and forth we’ve been watching for half the season looks eerily like the process of making ho’oponopono in the “highly structured method for family therapy and conflict resolution” sense, not the “Lucy saw a kahuna” sense. It’s based on the idea that an extended family or social group (ohana *cough cough*) forms an interconnected network of pathways for emotional exchange. If two people have a hurtful exchange that causes continued conflict, the rest of the family gets drawn in to the “entanglement” too because they’re all connected.

To clear the way for forgiveness (and free everyone else) the whole family must work together to pull the entanglement apart like a knot, releasing or letting go of all the negative emotions trapped within.

The process is very straightforward:

Step 1: Explicit statement of the problem, to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Only one problem is discussed at a time. If a new problem is discovered in Step 2, it must wait until the first problem has been resolved before it can be addressed.

Step 2: Open, honest, rational discussion of the problem, “ripping off the scab” to expose the hurt and any additional, underlying problems. This step can take many sessions.

The goal is for everyone to clearly understand the transgression and how it developed into hurt, pain, and miscommunication.

Feel free to mentally sub in basically any scene from 112-117.

If participants begin to lose control of their emotions or display intense manifestations of anger, hurt, or frustration, there is a mandatory period of silence ( Lucy 👀 ) and/or the discussion is suspended until the next session so that everyone has time to reflect and regain their composure.

Again, there were about six scenes here to choose from - the discussion step can take many sessions.

Step 3: Mutual apologies and forgiveness

The wrong doer must ask for forgiveness for their specific transgression, and the wronged party must also ask for forgiveness for retaliating in their hurt and anger.

Both parties are considered equal contributors to the problem, so both must apologize for the roles they played and restate the ways they were at fault.

The incident is not forgotten, but both parties must forgive themselves and each other, letting go of hurt, anger, guilt, and shame in order to move forward.

If additional problems were uncovered during the discussion of the original transgression,

they are now restated as new problems

and Steps 1-3 repeat until all problems have been resolved, all transgressions forgiven, and both parties are able to move forward with open communication and positive emotional exchanges.

The semantic shift from “you lied to me and broke my heart,” to “we had something so special, and you broke my heart into a million pieces,” here is significant. The transgression of dishonesty has been forgiven, and what's left is a deep, underlying pain. That is a separate but equally significant problem that both parties must hold space for and address according to its own merits.

Lucy just dropped a nuke then walked away (very cathartic power move tbh) and we know Kate has something brewing, so I feel confident there will be a lot more discussion and apologies in the coming few episodes. It looks very much like by the end of the season we'll make it to:

Step 4: Closing ritual, commonly marked by much hugging and the whole family sharing a celebratory meal together.

The whole extended family is there (Milius, Pike, and Boom Boom included), and if Wally is there, you know there will be plenty of food.

Importantly, the whole family has been instrumental in the progress they’ve made so far. Ernie’s ongoing dialogue with and support of Lucy is a huge factor in how her demeanor and perspective have changed. In 119 specifically, he asked the right questions to remind her why Kate and the process of forgiving her was important (this is one of the areas where parallels run a lot deeper). Jane’s more subtle but equally consistent emotional support and facilitation of dialogue between the two is just as essential. She has either witnessed or orchestrated the interactions that resulted in every one of their significant discussions (I’d also put money on the fact that in 120 she texted Lucy about Whistler’s health and told Whistler about the Medina takedown). Most importantly though, she’s the head of the family. It’s only fitting that she should be the one to bring everyone together for the celebratory meal that marks the final act of forgiveness and “symbolizes the re-establishment of trust, mutual support, and family unity.”

Apparently some people are not happy as to why Kate rejected her DIA promotion to be with Lucy when Lucy didn't do the same for Kate. I get that a little but I think their relationship is so much stronger than before and can take the distance (and so much more) whereas in the past it was just fledging and they had a lot of issues to work on. Besides, no one forced Kate to reject the promotion and she doesn't seem to regret it one bit so I don't get what the fuss is. Her relationship with Lucy has changed her priorities. It's not a bad thing to sacrifice something for someone you love once in a while, it's what you do in a relationship.

Also, think of all that "last night together" sex and "I haven't seen you in a long time and I've missed you so much" sex they're gonna have when Lucy gets back 😏

Yooo people are so out of pocket about Lucy sometimes 😂🙄 I'm so glad I just ship kacy in my little corner of tumblr where the #kacy takes I see range from "I don't agree but totally fair" to "Absolutely gorgeous, flawless character analysis."

Entering a relationship doesn't involve signing a Hammurabi's code-inspired "eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth" contract. Kate rejecting a long distance promotion does not mean that Lucy is then obligated to reject any future long distance promotions. In fact, in most healthy relationships it's two people who want the best for each other.

I actually think it is fair to say that there's a parallel between Kate being offered a promotion and Lucy being offered a promotion. The commonality in the end is not whether they say yes or no to the promotion, but that at the end of the day each character made the best decision for herself. Kate, who has historically felt lonely and isolated, who has a hard time making friends, who has always put the job before anything else, needed to turn that promotion down so that for once she could choose happiness in Hawai'i (I mean, we know that it was a winding path to happiness but still). Even without Lucy in the picture, I think staying and joining the FBI was the right decision for Kate.

On the other hand, Lucy is just starting out in her career. She's ambitious, she's adventurous. She wants to make a name for herself. But, as she said, she also has trust issues and part of her just wants to sit on that hill and look out in the distance with her girlfriend forever. Honestly I think it's so beautiful that Lucy has moved from the stage in her life where she was dreaming of getting out and seeing the world, to the stage in her life where she is actually seeing the world. Her younger self would be so proud of her.

I thought that last scene was beautiful and showed the strength of Kate and Lucy's relationship. It's a shame to me that some people have reduced those moments to something transactional. But...their loss I guess!

After completing the Duggar version of this analysis, I decided to do one for the Bates as well. This analysis might not be as thorough as the Duggar one though, as so many of the GrandBates have more unusual names or alternate spellings. Following the previous rules, I looked up the popularity of each GrandBates name in the year they were born to see which parents are the most “on-trend.” Rankings outside of the top 1000 were unable to be determined. Only first names were considered for this analysis. For babies born in 2022/2023, 2021 data was used. For Kade and Carson, I included both their legal first names and their nicknames.

Probably unsurprising to a lot of us, Josie and Kelton are the most “on-trend” with their baby name selections.
