Momiji, Kyo, and what it means to protect the ones we love (part 5 of 5)
From the beach arc onward, we see Kyo intentionally spending more time with Tohru. He asks her to hang out in Kyoto, he eventually agrees to be in the play, they spend the New Year together, and he does little nice things for her when he can, like washing her scarf, or giving her the paper flower when he sees how upset she is.
This isn't wildly different from S1 Kyo, of course. He's done little nice things for her right from the beginning, like going to pick her up from work in E2. But he's more intentional with it now, and he's aware of his feelings for Tohru and desire to spend time with her. He may still feel unworthy of her, but he finally accepts that his presence makes her happy, so he's willing to quash his self-hatred enough to spend time with her, for her sake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we see Momiji work at protecting Tohru, most notably in Ask Him For Me, when he tries to accompany her on her mission to find Kureno, and when she insists on going alone, he draws her a map, tells her to stick to the bushes and give his name if she's caught, and tails her to make sure she doesn't get into trouble as she searches for Kureno. (Just look how worried he is! And look at him getting Tohru out of there!) He sees that Tohru feels very strongly about being involved, so he does absolutely everything he can to make sure she can do so as safely as possible. We even see his memory of the night Akito scratched Tohru's cheek, just to make his worries crystal clear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also doesn't try to distract or manipulate Tohru when he realizes she's upset. He asks her what's wrong and listens, and he even cries with her.
Takaya also connects Momiji and Kyo in the structure of Ask Him For Me/manga chapters 74 and 75. Momiji's section of this episode is almost bookended by two appearances from Kyo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Near the beginning, Tohru asks Kyo about Kureno, and he warns her not to go looking for trouble. And at the end, we have that rooftop conversation.
Tohru: It's only natural to want to be with the person you love, to want to be by their side, right? Kyo: What is it? Are you in love with some guy? Tohru: N-n-n-no! It's not about me! Kyo: Don't worry. When you do fall in love, you'll have my full support.
So, in this episode, we have Momiji trying to protect Tohru, and Kyo trying to cheer her up and spend time with her, a complete reversal from where they started relative to each other.
And then, Momiji grows up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After Golden Week, a bunch of the kids gather at Shigure's house for dinner, and when Tohru notices that Kyo isn't with them, Momiji volunteers to go get him (Momiji really is always the one to invite Kyo to join everyone). In the manga, Tohru starts crying when she notices that Kyo's not with them, no doubt thinking of Kyo's upcoming confinement.
When Momiji arrives in Kyo's room, they have this exchange:
Kyo: You guys are gonna eat here, too? Momiji: It's okay, we settled on curry. Kyo: Whatever. You grew a lot, huh? Momiji: Right? Pretty soon I might be taller than you, and better looking! And then, and then... maybe Tohru will accept my proposal? Do you get that if you give up, something like that might happen? So you shouldn't give up. I'm gonna stop going, 'There's no point in thinking about this,' and giving up. Wouldn't it sting if some other guy took Tohru from you? Well, look at the time! We better go help make curry! Come on!
In the manga, it's made clear that Kyo is horrified that everyone knows he loves Tohru. He stands separate from the rest of the group at the barbecue. In the manga, he and Tohru share a cute moment of blushing eye contact.
I love how Momiji says he'll stop thinking it's pointless, too, after he encourages Kyo not to give up. In a conversation where he could have focused on the fact that Kyo is his romantic rival, he instead focuses on the fact that they both might have futures worth fighting for. They're fighting beside each other, even if they can't both be the one Tohru loves romantically.
Later that episode (or a few chapters later), Momiji's curse breaks. He now has a real future ahead of him, but he sees how Tohru looks at Kyo, and he knows that his own future won't be at her side like he wants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kyo: Momiji? Jeez, you're here of all places. Tohru and them are inside looking for you, so- Momiji: What? Kyo: Huh? Uh, nothing. Did something happen? Momiji: My curse is broken. Would it surprise you if I said that? Kyo: What? Listen, you- Momiji: Yours breaking would make Tohru happier than mine breaking. I'm sure she'd be happy. I mean... you know, right? I'm the one this stings. Kyo: Shut up. I don't wanna realize that. It's too...
Gosh, this scene breaks my heart every time. On both of their behalves. Momiji is dealing with his first real heartbreak, and Kyo is dealing with his extremely complicated feelings about loving Tohru, his guilt over Kyoko's death, and his upcoming confinement in the Cat's House.
It's clear Kyo cares for Momiji in this scene, and Momiji really tries to put on a happy face for Kyo, but he can't. Megumi Han does an outstanding job as Momiji in this scene. The way her voice breaks when Momiji smiles and says, "Would it surprise you if I said that?" is just crushing.
The visual storytelling is stunning, too. The wide shots, emphasizing how lonely both Momiji and Kyo are. The way the scene is composed to emphasize the distance between them. The close-ups on their faces when they're each grappling with the thing that's gutting them. The way Momiji's smiles are always immediately followed by the saddest looks. The way their solo shots mirror each other's, at the beginning, middle, and end. We also don't see Kyo's eyes between the moment Momiji says his curse is broken and when Kyo is saying, "I don't wanna realize that."
Before the beach arc, I don't think Momiji would have watched that sort of interaction from a distance, and I don't think he would have let it stop him from making plans with Tohru. He would've just wanted to make her smile and spend as much time with her as possible, even if that meant ignoring her feelings. And he definitely wouldn't have let himself feel sad. Momiji's pain in this scene is evidence of his growth.
Tumblr media
That night, Momiji goes to speak to Akito, after having dismissed her the night before. His speech to her might be my favorite moment of the whole series. It's the climax of Momiji's arc, at the very least.
Momiji: I'm sorry I sent you home alone yesterday. I spent the whole day thinking. Wondering why my curse is gone... only mine. I couldn't think of anything that would cause it. But I can say this: Akito, I can't stay by your side for the rest of my life. And you can't tie me down anymore. [Akito slaps Momiji] Akito: Monster! Traitor. Traitor! [Akito beats her fists against Momiji's chest] Akito: If you leave here, leave me, you've got no place to go! Your mother and father won't just welcome you back! No one will! You'll never be happy! Momiji: I know. I've become so free, and so lonely. The curse breaking doesn't mean I'll get the girl I want. And the bonds that unconditionally connected me to everyone are gone. It's too late. I can't go back to before things were broken. But... but don't tell me that not having those things means I can't be happy! Don't just decide that! I feel vulnerable being free, but a happiness might exist for me! It might be somewhere in the future, waiting for me to catch up! I'm going to finally start walking along my own life's path. What about you? How long will you stay here? The person most afraid that if they leave this place, they'll have no home and no happiness... Akito: Shut up. Just shut up. Get lost. Momiji: Okay.
It's almost the credo of the whole series, isn't it? That it's better to make your own way, with no guarantee of love or happiness, than to cling to bonds that have become a burden and wish for things to never change. What Momiji's saying is what Akito needs to accept in order to be free herself.
And Momiji, despite all the loss he's suffered, despite having his heart broken that very afternoon, he's still determined to keep going.
I love this as the climax for Momiji's arc because it showcases the ways he's grown while also showing us the things that have always made him such a special character. He's standing up for himself and his future, not afraid to make Akito angry or say things she doesn't want to hear. He's acknowledging that it hurts, and that he might never have the family he so desires. But he also might.
It's a waste of time to think about loss or life getting harder. The traveler never thought about that stuff.
He still has hope, even as everything seems so dark. And he still tries to help Akito, even after everything she's done to him.
The parallels between Kyo and Akito in this episode/chapter are so well done. For both of them, the pain of moving forward is just too much right now, but Momiji still wants to see them both move forward anyway, and he's telling them this in a straightforward, mature way, rather than manipulating them.
And Momiji's not done affecting Kyo's arc.
Tumblr media
After Kyo asks Tohru if she loves him, we see Momiji's face and hear him say, "I mean... you know, right?" Once more, it's Momiji whose voice Kyo hears at such a crucial moment.
It's painful for Kyo to finally accept that Tohru loves him. He doesn't know she already knows about his confinement, and worse still, he knows he has to tell her about the day of her mother's death.
But again, it was Momiji who led Kyo to realize that he loves Tohru in S2, and now it's Momiji leading Kyo to realize that Tohru loves him, too.
After Kyo unloads his guilt on Tohru, and Tohru falls from the cliff, it's really Yuki who gets Kyo to take the final step toward accepting Tohru's love, so I won't say much about that except to point out that Yuki says making Tohru smile was protecting her, and that only Kyo could make her smile like that.
Tumblr media
I think this scene, where Momiji and Kagura team up to tease Kyo, is the last time we see Kyo and Momiji together. But they're still affecting each other's arcs all the way to the end.
After Kyo and Tohru get together, they visit Kyoko's grave, and Kyo asks Tohru to move away with him.
It's selfish, and it's going to take Tohru away from everyone else, but he still asks anyway. It's a very Momiji-like thing for him to do.
And then, he says this:
I'm taking her with me. You good with that? I'll keep my promise. I know I'm really late, but... I'll protect her for life. So, we're good, right?
He's taking her with him, and he'll protect her for life. He's learned from Momiji, but he's still Kyo.
As they get ready to leave, Tohru starts reminiscing and starts to cry because she'll miss everyone so much.
Kyo: Clearly you don't get it. Listen up: everyone loves you more than you think they do. So it'll be okay. This isn't the last time you'll ever see them. It's the start of a new banquet, right?
In his last appearance, Kyo hugs her and cheers her up and offers a healthy dose of optimism for their future.
And the last time we see Momiji, he's sitting at the dojo with Haru and Rin.
Momiji: More importantly, how dare Kyo take Tohru with him! I bet he just wants her all to himself. I wanna pinch him! Really hard! Haru: Why not pinch him tomorrow? Momiji: Nah, I can't do it in front of Tohru. Oh, but thanks to him, I have another dream. I'm going to find an amazing significant other, and we're gonna go visit them just to show off! So Tohru had better stay happy. She'd better keep on smiling, or I'll be disappointed.
He's complaining and getting annoyed at Kyo (and threatening light physical violence!), but he's still dreaming of a bright future for himself. And he's trusting Kyo to keep cheering Tohru up in their new home.
When I started thinking about writing this series, the point I thought I'd be making was that Momiji functioned as Kyo's mentor in Fruits Basket. But after putting these posts together, I really think it'd be more accurate to say they were each other's mentors. Their relationship has a mutuality from the start. I hope they remained close as adults.
And I really hope Momiji found an amazing partner.
Momiji and Kyo: Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4
Here's a plug for my fic, Bloom Within Us. It's a canon-divergent AU where Tohru dies after falling from the cliff. I've really enjoyed exploring Momiji and Kyo's relationship in that story. If you've enjoyed this series, I hope you'll check it out!

“Heal my demons/make it dirty on principle/kill my prison, tip my demons/‘cause I know they’re unquenchable” from One in A Million by Dance Gavin Dance (writer’s choice for ship)
Lines, faded so pale pink that only someone looking very close would see them, twine around her wrists. Remnants of the chains in Naraku’s castle. Their presence is as heavy as the real thing.
Layers of clothing hide a collection of poorly-healed battle wounds that neither time nor demonic blood could erase. They burn with the reminder of her original purpose: Soldier. Shield. Slave.
Worst of all is the spider that still mars the whole of her back. Rough, ugly, and wind-worn. Though she can't see it herself, knowing it's there (like a stamp, a brand) makes her want to claw her body to ribbons.
Kagura’s scars feel like a curse.
-
The wind god finally allows her to resurrect, and it is a disappointment that her body remains unhealed.
Jaken complains about the time she spends melting away in hot springs, unaware how many minutes are dedicated to scrubbing her skin raw. Her displeasure is not out of a sense of vanity; rather the constant reminder the marks make, of the being that put them there.
I will be free, Kagura spits at her tormentor's back for the hundredth time. Echos of a thousand demonic cries shudder through the castle walls.
Naraku doesn't even spare a look back towards her as he retorts, You don't even have a reason to exist without me.
Now she has a life of her own. But with how the vessel containing her spirit looks, who would know?  If she could live with a hollowed out place in my chest, then a few layers of skin off the back won’t matter…
The sky grows dark, indicating she's taken far too long. So Kagura grits her teeth and ties her kimonos loosely around sore, stinging shoulder-blades. The spider mark burns; perhaps Naraku is using it to send her a message from Hell.
That night, curled up together in a cave somewhere, Sesshomaru watches the ginger way she moves about. Predictably, he doesn't actually say anything. But Kagura picks a fight anyway, just to distract herself from what he could be thinking.
Pity would be bad enough, and isn't something she wants anyway. Confusion is more likely; Sesshomaru often finds her feelings and behaviors a mystery.
As for compassion - Jaken claims the daiyokai has developed some, in the time between Kagura's death and rebirth. But as the source is less than reputable, she won't hold her breath for that.
-
Over the years, her body gains other scars. But it's different this time.
It's not hard for someone with Kagura's taste for fun to meet with trouble - how fascinating, that violence seems to be a constant partner of good entertainment! So she collects a few more battle wounds. It takes days for her demonic energy to fade them into a white or pink interruption of skin. But in this life, Kagura is not shut up in a corner of the castle to wonder at the consequences of resting for too long. Instead, Sesshomaru sits by her side with little comment, other than a dry reprimand for her lack of sense. And nothing happens to her heart.
Well, nothing bad, anyway.
A year after her resurrection, they kiss for the first time, and his fangs catch her lip. It's sharp enough to leave a divot that she runs her tongue over at night. Not with fear, but excitement. And the next time their lips meet, she tries her best to give him a matching one.
Her body stretches as she eats and drinks and laughs more often; in the hot spring, she counts blue stripes along her hips and thighs and delights in how they look like sunlight rippling across wind-touched water. It leaves much less time to try to wash away a dreadful past.
Jaken mentions it off-handedly one night - a demon who makes art out of people's bodies with ink. Kagura interrupts to ask about something she will never remember later, and as with most of their conversations, it quickly devolves into a screaming match. She ends up so focused on chasing the kappa around the room with blades of wind, that Sesshomaru's thoughtful expression completely passes her notice.
A few days later, he takes her to a grimy seaside village. They stop at a dark stall covered with line-work designs, where he stuffs a genuinely worrying amount of money into her hand. "This should cover anything that you feel is necessary."
To cover her rapidly increasing heartbeat, Kagura punches his arm with a shout - don't treat me like a greedy little mistress you're abandoning in a merchant's square! But even if he didn't have excellent hearing, the warm wind that twines around his shoulders would still make her delight clear.
The self-proclaimed artist, Yatora, deems the scars on her wrists "not a problem". He is clearly taken aback when she states that is not her concern; when she pulls away the final kimono to display the spider scar that still stains her back, the response is a frustrated sigh.
"Well...I hope you can handle pain."
Memories rush in, but she is past feeling like she'll drown in them. "Won't be a problem."
-
In the growing darkness, Kagura flexes her shoulder-blades carefully to test the stretch of the raw, needled skin. She left the mirror somewhere, or else she'd go to look at the finished design again. Even swollen and healing, it makes the air around her sing with pride, to have the spider finally covered.
Sesshomaru watches her move, eyes half-lidded. After some time, he murmurs, "What was it that convinced Fujin to resurrect you?"
Kagura twists her head towards the futon; he has never asked her this before. Perhaps because it didn't matter to either of them, so long as she was alive at all. As she considers how to answer, her tongue worries the divot in her bottom lip.
"I dunno. It was something like - my smile had 'too much beauty in it to be left to a hopeless fate'."
Sesshomaru frowns.
"Okay, fine, I made that up. He never said why; don't reckon I'll ever know."
He shifts closer; the tips of his claws run down the collection of blue lines striping her left hip, and she shivers.
Clearing her throat, she says, “Whatever it is, I suppose you’re asking because you’re grateful for it?”
Sesshomaru’s eyes gleam in the barest hint of lantern-light that remains. It makes Kagura want to mark him, too.
So she does. Long lines scratched down his back and the imprint of her mouth against his throat, to start. But unlike the scars crossing her own body, anything that mars Sesshomaru’s skin will fade before the morning sun can arise.

I Miss My Wife
Gender Neutral Reader
Leona Heidern|Chizuru Yata-Kagura|Shermie
Your entire day to be summed up was exhausting
It was all purely fun and games deciding to have a training day with your wife
Until you forgot she’s in the special forces
From cardio to straight up inhumane exercises to say you were beat was an understatement
The combat machines routinely kept up with your pace as your eyes drifted over to Leona who was in much better shape than you
As your form got more and more sluggish you dropped the routine all together and whisked over to Leona’s area
“Why are you in my section?” Her blunt words may come off negatively to most but you’ve grown accustomed to it by now
“I’ve missed you, my wife.”
Sternly staring back into your eyes a crunch was heard as she dismantled the training machine
“Don’t get distracted.” She barely coughed out
“I love you too!”
If it was up to Chizuru the both of you wouldn’t be in this predicament
However with the recent surge in Orochi energy more and more fiends arrived
The time flew with a never ending clearance
Promptly catching your breath from the—what was it? 100 enemies?
Your eyes scanned the field for your wife
Swiftly departing before the next challenger could get a swing in you approached the sealer with an embrace
“What is it my love?” She quirked an eyebrow at you as she dodged multiple attacks
“I just missed you is all.”
“Well you can miss me all you want after we deal with them.”
“As you wish dear.”
Shermie has no battle etiquette whatsoever
So the minute you began to long for her she dropped the opponent and walked off with you
Regardless of whether or not they would chase after the both of you
She does this quite often
Be it in the king of fighters tournament or just in daily combat
A terribly concealed laughter leaving her lips as you embraced her with longing
“Not that I mind at all but what’s with the hug?”
“I’ve simply missed you dearly.”
“Shall we leave then? I’m getting bored anyways—how about the shopping district?”

Have another fic for an AU I (Smol) haven't talked about here yet.
Summary:
The goddess Hinokami intended on blessing the latest sun breather in his fight against demons. When she realizes Tanjirō is her descendant, she awakens his latent abilities instead. Muzan Kibutsuji arrogantly claimed the gods never saw fit to punish him in all of one thousand years. If Yoriichi Tsugukuni wasn’t enough, one Tanjirō Kamado with the power of the sun flowing through his veins is more than willing to make the Demon King rethink that claim.

Fandom: Gintama Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Shimura Tae/Yagyuu Kyuubei
Valentine’s Day came and went with little fanfare, because neither Kyuubei nor Otae knew what to do with it. Who was supposed to be The Man in their relationship, anyway? Well, thought Kyuubei, I am clearly the more masculine of us two. I will wait for White Day to roll by, and then I’ll pull some romantic declaration out of my ass that’s so life-changing we get married on the spot. This plan is flawless.  Well, thought Otae, these gender stereotypes are pretty outdated anyway, I wouldn’t want to stick Kyuubei in The Man box against their wishes. The progressive thing to do would be to wait for them to make the first move for White Day and just follow their lead.  Suffice it to say, Kyuubei received zero chocolates on Valentine’s day. Everything went to shit.

A SessKagu story based on super steamy art by @sayuri-liu for @inu-spiration!!
Summary: Sesshomaru is the crowned prince of hell. Kagura is a receptionist. They shouldn’t have anything to do with one another, but Sesshomaru finds something in Kagura, something sublime and forbidden, that he just can’t deny himself.
Read on: AO3
——————————preview——————————
A dark chuckle, the click of lacquered nails on glass, a spritz of perfume.
Kagura leaned forward in her mirror, checking the shimmer on the swell of her breasts, grabbing up her powder puff and adding more.
Vanilla scent clouded the air around the vanity, sweet and rich, joining the heady amber of her body spray.
She smelled like a baked good: delectable, mouthwatering, sinful, perfect.

Curiosity Killed... The Dog?
It's time for this week's update!!! Tried my hand at a little action scene. Let me know what you guys think of it! 💬 🤔
You can read it on Ao3 WTTPD or FFN
Preview...
Without stopping to think of the consequences, Kagura let loose a flurry of wind attacks, hoping one would cut that smirk right off of her smug little face. "Stop this Kagura! I have no idea what you're even talking about!"
"LIAR!" Finally one of her attacks hit. Kagura relished in the painful scream that ripped through the Miko's throat. It was almost as satisfying as the scent of her blood in the air.
Soon, Kagura would eliminate her once and for all and once she was gone, nothing would stand in the way of her gaining that which she desired only less than her freedom itself.

Yakult and Tobacco Part 2 | Gintama
Word count: 2.7k
C/W's: none
Summary: This is a continuation of Yakult and Tobacco, which is post-chapter 704. Part 2 takes place about 3 weeks after the end of Part 1. The Kiheitai meet Otsu and reveal what happened to Tsunpo (Bansai).
a/n: This is my 2nd Gintama fic almost one year after the 1st. I had an idea to continue the story but didn't have it planned from the beginning. You don't have to read the first Yakult and Tobacco to read this one I guess, but this is a definite sequel, and it'd be nice if more people read that too if they haven't already. As I've said before, I hope this isn't too bad. Likes and reblogs are appreciated!
Read Part 1
______
On a particular day, the Yorozuya had no plans or jobs scheduled, and it might’ve been an uneventful day if not for an unexpected visitor.
Shinpachi promptly answered the door after the doorbell rang. “Otsu-chan!” he said excitedly upon seeing who it was. “Come in. How may we help you?”
After everyone was seated, Otsu began by saying, “This might be the strangest request I’ve ever had for you, but I would like your help finding my producer Tsunpo-san.”
“He’s missing?” Gintoki asked.
“It seems like it…But I don’t know for sure. The last time I talked to him was a little over two and a half years ago. He hasn’t answered my calls or texts since then.”
“Hold on. You haven’t heard from him in that long? Sorry if this comes off as judgey–I’m really just trying to understand–but why are you just now trying to find him?”
“The last time Tsunpo-san contacted me was a few weeks before the invasion of the Altana Liberation Army. But when I tried to reach out again when it was over, no response. I didn’t know why he wasn’t responding or what could’ve happened to him. And none of my other colleagues from the music industry knew anything. It just felt like I’d hit a dead end, so I had no choice but to move on.” Otsu turned to look at Shinpachi. “I would’ve asked the Yorozuya for help sooner, but I found out Shinpachi-san was the only one running it for a while and didn’t want to burden him with a complicated problem.”
Shinpachi lowered his head. “I’m sorry, Otsu-chan. I hope we can help you this time, though.”
“It would be great to get some answers.”
Gintoki crossed one leg over the other and said, “So, if we want to get anywhere, we should start with the basics. What did Tsunpo-san look like?”
“I actually never saw his face or met him in person,” Otsu replied sheepishly.
“Oi, doesn’t it sound creepy that this guy wouldn’t show his face?”
Kagura shrugged. “I don’t know, Gin-chan. Think of all the world-famous musicians who wear costumes and masks in public.”
Otsu nodded. “Kagura-san is right. That’s why I never thought anything of it. I just really respected Tsunpo-san’s artistry. We mostly talked on the phone, but the few times we video called, he did wear a kabuki mask if he was on camera. There weren’t many physical traits I could see, but I think his hair was green.”
Gintoki’s eyebrows went up. “Was there anything else that stood out about him? Like speech patterns, behaviors…?”
“Hmm… Oh, yes! He would say gozaru instead of gozaimasu, which made him sound more old-timey. And his favorite instrument was the shamisen.”
Shinpachi considered this for a moment before saying, “Gin-san, are you thinking of the same person? Could it really be him?”
“I’m 99% positive,” Gintoki answered and turned back to Otsu. “Well, the surprisingly good news is I think we have an idea of Tsunpo-san’s real identity, but we need to confirm. Then we’ll be closer to figuring out what happened to him.”
“Really?” Otsu exclaimed, then bowed. “Thank you all so much. I knew I could count on you!”
Everyone stood up, and Kagura led Otsu to the door this time. “We’ll call you when we have an update,” she said.
After Otsu left, the three Yorozuya members contemplated their next move. If Tsunpo, Otsu-chan’s former producer, was really Kawakami Bansai, they’d need to confirm with people close to him.
……
Gintoki called up the Kiheitai, who were still residing in Edo.
“Hello?” Takasugi answered.
“Hey, Takasugi, it’s Gintoki. Listen, I don’t mean to be blunt, but was Bansai-san a producer for the famous pop star Terakado Tsuu?”
There was a pause on the other end, followed by a chuckle. “It’s true,” Takasugi responded. “I’m surprised you finally put two and two together after all this time. But what is this about?”
Gintoki explained the whole situation. “...Now that I’ve confirmed Tsunpo’s real identity and that he’s passed away, I can let Otsu-chan know. However… I feel like people close to him would be more fit to talk about him, so would you guys mind coming down to meet Otsu-chan?”
“Hmm…I don’t know…I’ll have to talk to the others about it and get back to you.”
“Fine by me. I hope you consider it, though. Talk to you later.”
……
Otsu returned to the Yorozuya office the next day after a phone call. This time, though, there were also three new people she’d never met: Takasugi Shinsuke, Kijima Matako, and Takechi Henpeita.
Once introductions were out of the way, it was time to get down to business. Shinsuke started the conversation. “As you already know, we three were friends of Tsunpo, except we knew him by his real name, Kawakami Bansai. And this might come as a shock to you, but he had a different life from what you may expect. You see, we were all members of the Kiheitai, a Jouishishi faction.”
Shinsuke paused to observe her reaction and give her a chance to speak. Otsu’s face was slightly pensive. She said, “To be honest, I did not expect that, but I don’t think I can be angry or disappointed at this point by learning the truth. I’ll always have a good opinion of Tsunpo-san. He recognized my talent and helped me clean up my image when I was at the lowest point of my career. It’s thanks to him that I was able to become one of the top idols of Japan. So he passed away, huh?”
Takasugi frowned slightly. “Yeah, he passed away over two years ago in the war. But he actually died while trying to help save the world, not to destroy it. In fact, we were all there fighting the Altana Liberation Army to save the world. Looking back, I’ll always remember how Bansai believed in us and was a great friend. You should also be glad to know that music really had been a big part of his personality.”
There was a moment of silence. Finally, Shinpachi spoke up. “Bansai-san seemed like a really cool person. He was actually nice to be around at that time we were all on Rakuyou. And to think I was talking to the producer of my favorite idol and had no idea?”
Kagura smirked. “You would’ve definitely been geeking out, Pattsan.”
Otsu smiled gently. “It’s comforting to hear that Bansai-san was a good person. But I’m still sad he’s gone, even though I’d already mentally prepared myself for the worst scenario. Besides the songs he made for me, I don’t have anything else to remember him by…”
After just listening up to this point, Matako said, “You don’t need to feel so bad. We’re almost in the exact same boat as you. You see, it wasn’t possible for us to collect any of Bansai-senpai’s belongings after the war.”
“But there may still be a way to find some of Bansai-dono’s things,” Henpeita pointed out. “As the three of us know, the Kiheitai had many different hideouts. Remember, there was at least one used by Bansai-dono if he came to Edo by himself. It was actually a condo he bought, so anything he left there may still be there. The HOA couldn’t have moved his things out despite being dead either, since he also set up automatic payments for his condo fees.”
Matako raised an eyebrow. “Did Bansai-senpai tell you that?”
Henpeita bobbed his head. “It just came up in conversation one day. Those producer royalty checks are something else.”
Takasugi chuckled.
Gintoki clapped his hands once and stood up. “Then it’s settled! You Kiheitai people can go over there and see what you can find. Please bring something back for Otsu-chan to remember Tsunpo-san by.” He looked at Otsu. “If that’s what you’d like?”
Otsu looked at the Kiheitai. “I wouldn’t mind, if it’s not too much trouble…”
Takasugi stood up, followed by the other two. “Even though this wasn’t part of the original deal…” he said looking at Gintoki, then turned to Otsu, “we’ll do it.”
……
Finding the condo building and even the individual unit wasn’t very hard at all since the Kiheitai had been in the practice of keeping track of its members’ whereabouts and its hideout locations for safety and other reasons. Bansai being Shinsuke’s 2nd in command was no exception. The hardest part was probably flagging down a taxi to get from Kabukicho to the condo.
Upon arrival, they just walked right in casually and went for the elevator. On the way up to the 22nd floor, it was silent at first until Takechi said, “Remember how I told you that while I was visiting a dragon hole, I heard a rumor that the Harusame was starting to go around collecting Altana crystals from all over the world?”
“Did the rumor end up being true?” Takasugi asked.
“Yes. In fact, I heard directly from Kamui-san the other day. He says he’s glad you’re alive, Shinsuke-dono. Apparently, they’re trying to make hair growth products from the Altana. Kamui-san got the idea from his father. The Harusame has become quite poor with no major backings, so they want to go into new ventures. He says their plan is to become a 90% legal business.”
Matako scoffed. “Just 90%?”
“You know what they say,” Shinsuke chimed in, “old habits die hard.”
They got out on the 22nd floor and walked down the hallway in silence until they found the door. Instead of a keyhole, there was a keypad lock. Shinsuke punched in what he thought he remembered the code as.
Click.
He turned the handle, and lucky for them, the door opened.
The apartment inside wasn’t exorbitantly fancy but definitely still more upscale than cheap. There was a computer in one corner with a printer, basic producing equipment and electric keyboard, and a few feet away, an acoustic guitar sitting on a stand.
Matako picked up the guitar. “I think Otsu-chan would like this guitar.”
Shinsuke nodded as he looked around. They could technically leave now that they had something, but he didn’t feel quite ready.
“It’s not as dusty as I expected,” Shinsuke remarked. “Housekeeping must still come.”
“What are we gonna do with this place?” Matako wondered. “It was mostly just Bansai-senpai’s, and he’s gone now.”
“We can’t take everything, but we can grab a few more personal items, then notify management of this resident’s passing, and they’ll take care of the rest probably.”
Shinsuke noticed Takechi was sitting at the computer clicking around. He went to stand next to him to get a closer look for himself. There appeared to be mostly mp3 files and an icon for FL Studio, a digital audio workstation, on the home screen, which wasn’t that surprising. But one thing caught his eye.
“Can you click on that?” Shinsuke instructed, pointing to where he wanted Takechi to go.
Takechi did what he was asked, and a window popped up with a picture.
“I didn’t know he took this,” Matako commented. It was a picture of the four of them having dinner at one of the hideouts. Besides Bansai flashing a peace sign for the camera, it was a completely candid photo. Behind Bansai on one side, Matako and Henpeita appeared to be arguing over something. On the other side, Shinsuke was picking up a piece of food with a smirk.
“We were actually a really good team,” she said. “I’m just glad we can at least be together like this again.”
Shinsuke turned his head for a second to look at her sympathetically. “I know the Kiheitai’s been through a lot in the past couple years, but I promise things will be different now.”
Matako smiled. “We can finally make a memorial for Bansai-senpai, huh?”
“Do you want me to print out the picture?” Takechi asked. “Hopefully it’s not out of ink. We’ve somehow been really lucky so far today.”
“Go ahead,” Takasugi said. “Print two copies while you’re at it.”
They decided to leave with the guitar, the printed photos, and a pair of headphones that looked similar to Bansai’s main pair. After the photos were printed out, Takasugi told Takechi to delete the file from the computer. He just didn’t want a picture of them floating around for any random person coming after to see since they weren’t going to take the computer.
……
The Kiheitai ended up going back to the Yorozuya that same day to deliver the items. Gintoki then called up Otsu, and they waited until she arrived.
“Wow, you guys are fast!” she remarked.
“We found this guitar and these headphones,” Matako said. “Which one of them do you want?”
“Hmm…The guitar!”
Matako handed it off to her.
Otsu bowed. “Thank you, I’ll treasure it always.”
Takasugi pulled out one of the printed photos. “Here’s a picture of Bansai we found, too. Now you’ll finally know what he looked like.”
Otsu took the picture, and her eyebrows went up. Without taking her eyes off it, she said, “Wow, he definitely looks like the artist type. I’d expect nothing less from someone cool like Tsunpo-san…He was also quite handsome.” Now she was blushing slightly.
Shinpachi gasped dramatically in the back.
“You can keep the picture,” Shinsuke told her. “We have our own copy.”
“Thank you all again for helping me. It means so much that I could finally get some closure.” Otsu reached into her purse and took out some money, giving it to him.
Shinsuke raised his eyebrows, then smiled. “Thank you.”
Otsu stood up and gave money to Gintoki, too, who was more than happy to accept. “Well, I better be heading out.” She picked up the guitar. “I now have some new inspiration and a new perspective, and I’m ready to channel it into a song!”
……
Later that day while back at their house, the Kiheitai finished putting together a simple memorial/shrine for Bansai and were now burning incense. On a small table, the picture was now in a frame, with the headphones laying in front of the picture and a vase of incense sticks to the side.
None of the members were particularly religious, but paying their respects to the dead still felt appropriate as a ritual. They each put their hands together and bowed their heads.
After a minute, Matako asked, “Shinsuke-sama, do you know if there’s an afterlife?”
Takasugi shrugged. “In all seriousness, I still don’t know despite literally coming back from the dead. I actually don’t remember anything in between dying and being reborn. After experiencing that, I’d be fine to just wait a long time before learning the answer.”
“I suppose we won’t know for certain until it’s truly our time,” Takechi said.
Matako smirked at him. “I think the lolicon is definitely going to hell,” she grumbled.
“I’m not a lolicon, I’m a feminist.”
……
The next morning, Shinsuke and Matako were sitting outside on the veranda after breakfast to enjoy the refreshing weather. Shinsuke also was smoking his kiseru.
Henpeita came outside and said, “I finished talking to the apartment management about the death of their resident. They seemed understandably shocked yet also sad. Of course, I had to change a few details of the story…They don’t need us for anything else because we weren’t his relatives, but they told me they’d cancel his account and thanked me for notifying them.”
“Thanks for doing that, Takechi,” Shinsuke said. “Now, I’d actually like to make a call to Kamui. I’ve been thinking about what he told you, and I’m intrigued. Maybe we can be involved in some way to help.”
Matako leaned forward. “Shinsuke-sama, what kind of involvement do you have in mind? Please tell me we’ll stay away from anything too sketchy. Compared to the Harusame, even we looked like saints.”
He blew out some smoke, then locked eyes with her as he said, “I promise. I plan on asserting our boundaries and staying on the 90% legal side. We’ll all have a say in the matter.”
Matako nodded. “Okay, that’s reassuring.”
Shinsuke took a final hit from his pipe. “Anyway…I’m gonna call him now.” With that, he stood up and went inside.
Henpeita sat down. “I look forward to what that man has in mind.”
“Let’s see where we go this time.”

I had a thought, dear However scary About that night The bugs and the dirt Why were you digging? What did you bury Before those hands pulled me From the earth?
If being trapped on the ground was hell for a wind demon, being buried underground is far worse.
So when she bursts from the rain-sodden earth, vomiting dirt and decay, Kagura is overcome with relief.
There's a storm breaking overhead. Humid night air curls around her shoulders, as though to pull her up itself; renewed demonic energy warms the tips of her pointed ears and her frozen corpse-fingers. It gives her the strength to drag herself the rest of the way out of the grave. Luckily, the topmost layer of soil has already been peeled away.
What a delight, to be alive. To be free.
She's still wiping mud from her eyes when Sesshomaru's figure cuts through the rain. (Later, she tells herself that there must be a perfectly innocent explanation for the mix of blood and mud under his nails, and that his facial marks only seem fainter due to the lack of moonlight.)
He stands over her, taking only a mere moment to inspect the empty grave. Kagura watches him in wonder and confusion. Is he the reason she is no longer in Hell, or simply a witness?
Why is he shaking?
"Can you walk," he says finally.
"Yes," she replies, despite having not tried to do so yet. Stormwater drips down the planes of his face, and Kagura has the bizarre desire to cup her hands together to collect it all.
Her fan, stained and ragged at the edges but otherwise intact, lands in her lap.
"Come, then."
He only makes it a few steps before stumbling. Kagura doesn't register it at first; too busy searching the dirt for her feathers, crying out in frustration as she only finds worms.
When he sinks into a crouch, hissing painfully, she is so startled she rises to her feet. Luckily, they seem to remember how to hold her weight - for someone who just rose from the dead, she actually feels just fine.
"Oi, Sesshomaru! What's wrong with you?"
She crafts a blade of wind to hover above their heads, giving them some reprieve from the rain. Sesshomaru glares darkly at her as she kneels in front of him, but Kagura doesn't see the point in still being afraid.
Up this close, she considers two things. First, her initial opinion was right - he really is quite handsome. Second, that something between them feels very strange. Not in a romantic way this time; although if Fate stopped trying to kill her for a few minutes then she would be able to make some headway in that respect...
No, this is something that moves beneath her skin, gnawing at every sense. Sesshomaru's gaze flickers over her face, and Kagura wonders how visibly she wears this discomfort that can't be named...
Seriously, what's wrong with you? is what she means to say. But the words that leave her lips instead are "Were you the one to resurrect me?"
Sesshomaru frowns and sinks another inch towards the ground. Lightning lights up his expression for an instant.
"Yes."
"Well, you don't have to sound so morose about it - " A clap of thunder shatters her words, and Kagura feels its echo in her chest and the ground beneath them.
In the dirt...
"What did you do," she says, glancing back at the ruined grave, "to achieve that?"
Her heart is beating. Her heart is here. Her heart...
As if he can see the terrible thought that strikes her, Sesshomaru sighs. Before anything else can pass his lips, she's scrambled closer to slip both hands beneath his robes. He flinches sharply, both in scandal and at the chill of her palms, but does not stop her.
"No," she spits into the air, feeling rough, torn skin tissue beneath her fingers and nothing more. "No - Where did you put it?"
"You must leave things as they are," he says, more gently than she's ever thought was possible for him. "The consequences are acceptable enough."
There is no point. Only Kagura could understand such consequences; thus, only she could be so horrified.
"Damn fool, why would you do that?!" She screams, gripping his robes with both hands and making the best effort to shake him. "No heart belongs in the ground - "
"Leave things as they are," he says again, pushing her hands away. "You made the choice for yourself once. Do not disrespect mine."
Rain pounds in her ears; not even the tender wisps of her element tugging at the folds in her fan can draw her attention. Kagura swallows, and it still tastes like death.
After some time, Sesshomaru finds the strength to stand. Kagura watches him walk into the storm, grief and fury roiling in her stomach.
She doesn't want to follow him, to have to witness such a proud creature suffer the same humiliation she once did. Even if in his case it was self-inflicted.
But she's not a corpse anymore, nor the free wind long-rid of her mortal body. There's no point staying here, when she can walk and breathe and live.
So Kagura stands, fan in hand, and picks the new direction in which she'll go.
