just now realizing how much growing up in a very rural area shaped my (lack of) awareness of technology

like, the tech they use in the fruits basket manga (camcorders, cell phones with cameras, dvds, etc...) is all very much stuff i associate with the late aughts. i got my first cell phone around 2007, and my first camera phone around 2010? and my first smartphone at the end of 2011, and was still using my handheld digital camera through most of that time period. my family used dvds and vhs about equally until 2008 or so.

but like... that tech was all in a manga that was in publication from the late 90s through the mid-aughts. and it's shown that dvds were commonplace, as were cell phones and camcorders, and people could put the videos they recorded onto dvds which is a tech i definitely didn't have until 2010 or so. but not only does that manga take place in tech-forward japan, but in tokyo.

i wasn't even that unusual at my high school. sure, a lot of kids got cell phones before me, and i didn't even have texting until like a year into college, but it also wasn't that weird to not have one. cell phones were something rich kids had through most of high school for me. dvd players, too.

but then, i went to college in a city, and i've lived in cities since then. my parents and brother all moved to cities around then, too. no wonder i felt like tech was progressing so fast once i was in college - it wasn't the tech that was progressing, it was my access to it

okay so here’s a hot take: this was saki’s idea of a kind, pure wish

she’s trying to save kyo from having to deal with the ball, worrying about hugging girls in front of everyone, worrying about his feelings for tohru being revealed in front of everyone, etc…

she’s trying to save tohru from watching kyo dance with someone else and having her feelings revealed before she’s ready to acknowledge them herself

and there are even more people who would be much happier if the ball didn’t happen. saki’s kindness means trying to prevent the ball from happening in the darkest, funniest, most dramatic way possible

Core desire: to be wanted, needed, loved

Defense mechanism: gain love and approval by giving to others and becoming central in their lives; repress own needs

Passion: Pride (doing things for others in order to feel more important/better about self)

Virtue: Humility (accepting self as worthy and important exactly as they are)

Fixation: Flattery ("I am nice to people.")

Center of Intelligence: Heart/Feeling - repressed shame

Traits

Virtue: Serenity (acceptance of reality as it is)

Fixation: Resentment ("It's not fair!")

Center of Intelligence: Gut/Instinctual - repressed anger

Traits

Strengths: conscientious, rational, idealistic, responsible, can improve the world for themselves and others

Challenges: resentful, rigid, overly critical, obsessive, easily frustrated when things don't live up to their very high standards

Hornevian Group: Compliant - comply with rules to earn autonomy

Harmonic Group: Competency - repress feelings with correct action

A Deeper Dive Into the Enneagram

As I've been working on the Character Personality Types posts, I've included a lot of information about the Enneagram that I didn't really touch on in my Introduction post, such as Centers of Intelligence, Tritype, Subtypes, and more.

There are also some dimensions of the Enneagram that I haven't touched on at all, such as Hornevian types, Harmonic groups, Harmony groups (yes, this is different than Harmonic groups), vices, virtues, fixations, and more. This post is intended to introduce and explain some of those concepts.

After this, I'll be doing a write-up on each type where I compile all the information from this and my introduction post into single posts. Hopefully this will be helpful in understanding my character personality types posts!

Groups of Three

Enneagram Centers of Intelligence

In my posts, I've referred to three "Centers": the Head or Thinking Center, the Heart or Feeling Center, and the Gut or Instinctual Center (also referred to as the Body Center). Each Center is connected to one of the Core Emotions: Anger (the Gut), Fear (the Head), and Sadness/Shame (the Heart).

Within each Center, one type will overexpress that emotion, one will underexpress (or deny) that emotion, and one will repress (attempt to control) that emotion.

This is why, for example, the "angriest type in the Enneagram" is not actually in the Anger center! (This is the SX 4 - more about the subtypes in a bit). All types experience all three of these core emotions, as well as happiness and the rest of the range of emotions. However, it is their relationship to their Center of Intelligence's core emotion which is so integral to understanding the types.

Finding a character's Tritype means identifying their type in each of the three Centers of Intelligence: the Head, the Heart, and the Gut. (More on Tritype later!)

Hornevian Groups

This refers to how each type interacts with others to meet their own needs, and is broken into three groups: Assertive (3, 7, and 8), Compliant (1, 2, and 6), and Withdrawn (4, 5, and 9).

Harmonic Groups

This refers to how each type handles conflict, and is also broken into three groups: Competency (1, 3, and 5), Positive Outlook (7, 9, and 2), and Reactive (4, 6, and 8).

Harmony Groups

This refers to how each type relates to the world and provides for others (as well as the downsides of each approach), and is also broken into three groups: Idealist/Frustration (1, 4, and 7), Pragmatist/Attachment (3, 6, and 9), and Relationist/Rejection (2, 5, and 8).

Additional Core Dimensions

Passions

Also sometimes referred to as "vices" or "sins", these are the emotional patterns that we developed to protect us from psychic pain. While these may have been based on the "seven deadly sins", what is meant by each of their names may be slightly different than the commonly-accepted definitions of each sin. For example, Eights' Passion of "Lust" refers not to sexual desire, but a desire for intensity in all situations.

Virtues

These are essentially the flipsides of the Passions - the emotional patterns we can strive for as we move away from our defense mechanisms.

Cognitive Fixations

Just as the Passions are emotional patterns we've developed as a defense mechanism, the Fixations are thought patterns that have come to shape how we see the world.

Instincts and Subtypes

The three instincts - Self-Preservation, Social, and Sexual - are drives we all have that aim to ensure our survival. The SP instinct focuses on our immediate survival needs, the SO instinct focuses on belonging to a group that provides us with safety, and the SX instinct focuses on specific 1:1 relationships (note: this applies to all 1:1 relationships, not only those of intimate partners).

While we all use all three instincts, there is one that we will tend to use more than the others. This is commonly referred to as our "subtype".

Truity put it in a way that I thought was really helpful: Subtype = Instinct x Passion.

They also point out that subtypes have two main uses:

1) understanding why different types look alike, and  2) identifying growth challenges with more specificity and clarity. 

As types, wings, and Tritypes all have their own nicknames, I've been working at coming up with names for each of the Enneagram subtypes and am looking forward to sharing those!

Within each Enneagram, one subtype will be the more stereotypical of that type, and one will be the "countertype", or will relate to the type in an unexpected way. I'll label each of these in the upcoming posts as well.

Tritype

As explained above, Tritype involves identifying someone's main type in each of the three Centers of Intelligence. However, what I really love about Tritype is the way the three types combine to form something greater than the sum of its parts - they interact to form something brand new.

I've noticed that the Tritypes that include any given 2 Enneagrams will have some things in common, so I will be including those lists with each Enneagram's post. I've given those names as well.
